New York Times columnist Ross Douthat joins Josh Lewis to talk about his recent memoir The Deep Places.  His book tells of his recent journey in battling chronic Lyme disease and his reflections on illness, discovery, and hope.   Ross' story begins prior to the illness in which he was attempting to build the life he'd always dreamed of.  “At that moment in my life I only really believed in upside…I wrote my share of words on the problem of evil…usually making the case that much of American Christianity offers people the wrong answers, encouraging them to believe that actually bad things shouldn't happen if you're good, that the American Dream should be yours if you just stay in God's good graces and follow the paths that He's marked out.”   “I had a similar critique of the secular meritocracy in which I had been educated: that because it asked its climbers to work so hard and jump so high, it encouraged an idea that we had somehow earned all our privileges, that our SAT scores and extracurricular accomplishments meant that we genuinely deserved to rule.”   “But despite these critiques, there was still a sense in which I believed exactly these ideas myself—or at least for myself—as I passed through college into adulthood, achieved the career as a writer that I wanted, won the wife I wanted, the job I wanted, the kids I wanted, and now the house and country life I wanted, too.”   Yet life had other plans for Ross as he's spent the past six years battling an invisible enemy that's robbed much of the life he'd built.  His book offers profound insights into what we can make of our sufferings and how to keep hope in hopeless situations.   About Ross Douthat Ross Douthat joined The New York Times as an opinion columnist in April 2009.  His column appears every Tuesday and Sunday.  Previously, he was a senior editor at The Atlantic and a blogger on its website.  He is also a nonresident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he studies American politics, culture, religion, and family life.   A prolific writer, Ross has written for The Atlantic and National Review and has been published widely in the popular press.  In addition to The Deep Places, he is also the author of five other books: “The Decadent Society: How We Became the Victims of Our Own Success”; “To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism”; “Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics”; “Grand New Party: How Republicans Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream”, which he coauthored with Reihan Salam; and “Privilege: Harvard and the Education of the Ruling Class”.   Ross has a BA in history from Harvard University.  He lives with his wife and four children in New Haven.  You can follow Ross on Twitter @DouthatNYT

Sunday, October 24th we will be continuing our series on “Why Church.” Some people have used the pandemic to stop coming to church, some have adapted to worshipping from home, while others have other personal reasons for not attending. So, this fall we will explore why belonging to a church and participating as a member of the local church is important for our faith, our emotional and spiritual health, and for growing in all areas of our lives. We will be reflecting on Genesis 12:1-3; Matthew 5:13-16, To Change the World Together. Because elite cities have such a big role in creating and shaping culture, it's easy for Christians in them to fall into a theology of pride. They can end up believing not only that they are doing more important work than Christians but that they are better in many ways too. We'll examine this by looking at how James Davison Hunter's book To Change the World flatters the urban church world, how the urban church uses "third way" rhetoric to implicitly position themselves as better people than flyover country Christians, how the church church validates rather than challenges the way people in big cities are living their lives, and how seldom the church ever speaks prophetically about the sins of elite city industries like finance or entertainment.Works referenced:Kathy Keller on lessons learned from 30 years of ministry in New York: https://medium.com/redeemer-city-to-city/lessons-learned-from-30-years-in-ministry-e580d4afb846James Davison Hunter, To Change the World: https://www.amazon.com/Change-World-Tragedy-Possibility-Christianity-ebook/dp/B003TWNDVY/Preachers 'N Sneakers: https://www.instagram.com/preachersnsneakers/

You might have read or heard the story of a young man who was mining gold for many months and finally quits as he loses his hope. He sold all of his machinery and equipment to a "junk man" who sought "Expert Counsel" prior to resuming digging. His engineer advised him that gold would be found just 3 feet from where the previous miner had stopped. And do you know what? He was right. The first miner was literally three feet from striking gold – and he quit. The lesson that we learned from this story is that most people give up right before the gold because it gets too hard. Most of the time people who quit while being so close to achieving the success they want is because they have those limiting beliefs. And most people just don't know exactly what their limiting beliefs are. Those beliefs are so ingrained in to their mind in a way that they don't see it for themselves. Those limiting beliefs are known as your paradigms. To achieve your ultimate goal, you must face the challenges that come along the way. Sometimes, the last three feet can be really hard. Actually, this is a test of your desire- will you overcome, or will you succumb to this temporary roadblock and give up? My partner-David and I are having our Mastermind coming up on June 9th and we can help you shift your paradigms and help you see where and why you're stuck? David has helped me to change my belief system from where I thought was comfortable. So you come up against the obstacles and lot of those obstacles are the way you think. You can overcome by changing the pattern of thoughts. And mastermind are designed to help you change those pattern of thoughts. The same pattern of thoughts you have helped you to get where you are today are not the ones that will help you further grow yourself. Today we are talking about Tip #2 for Mastering Life Outside Your Comfort Zone, which is: To Change the Results You Must Change the Actions. If you're not operating from possibilities, you're operating from limitations - there is no in between. If the results you're currently seeing are not pleasing or satisfying, then you must change the actions to bring about different results. This often means you must begin making choices from outside your comfort zone. Think of it this way - everything you have already experienced (and may not like) is the result of making decisions from inside your comfort zone. You've been there, done that and the results may be disappointing. To create different results, you must do something different. Remember, the comfort zone is based on limited beliefs. To create a different experience, you must take action from different beliefs…the beliefs that exist outside your comfort zone. 3 Tips for Mastering Life Outside Your Comfort Zone

The Business Accelerator: Accountability | Productivity

We all have fears that stop us from stepping into our potential. It's what we've come to call the comfort zone - the place where fear is minimized to allow for daily life functioning. But we don't always realize just how much we give up for the sake of comfort. In an effort to minimize our greatest fears we can be sacrificing our heart's deepest desires. In the name of comfort we sacrifice potential. It reminds me of a quote by Tony Robbins that says (paraphrasing), the dance of life happens between our greatest fears and our greatest potential, which translates into life happens outside your comfort zone. Sounds good in theory, but how do we move through our terrifying fears to break free of limitations and embrace our true potential? Here are a few of my thoughts around 3 tips to master life outside your comfort zone. Tip #1: Every Person Experiences the Same Human Struggle With every person born there is a basic human struggle between ego and potential. The ego operates much like a computer operating system - it has a set of rules and programs that is the basis of its function. That's great if it's operating from an effective set of rules and programs - but it doesn't always do so. It's no secret we are a product of our environment: the beliefs we are exposed to as children often set the tone of a lifetime of experiences. In other words, the operating system most of us are functioning from was created long before we had conscious choice to reject the limiting beliefs that came from other people. (That's the kicker - Most people don't even realize their limiting beliefs aren't theirs!) The struggle comes in when we're operating on limiting beliefs that tell us one thing, when we crave another. We crave individual expression and expansion, yet our operating system tells us it's dangerous - or we'll fail - or we'll face rejection or criticism. We crave something better, but the fears that make up the boundaries of our comfort zone stop us from going for it. I believe this is the struggle that every single human faces to some degree or another. We all have fears. Yet, only the ones who have achieved great things have decided that their potential (life outside the comfort zone) was more important than listening to the fears (life inside the comfort zone). Tip #2: To Change the Results You Must Change the Actions If you're not operating from possibilities, you're operating from limitations - there is no in between. If the results you're currently seeing are not pleasing or satisfying then you must change the actions to bring about different results. Tip #3: It's About Learning to Be Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable Let's go back to expanding on the struggle that every human being experiences: it's the struggle between ego and potential. The ego only wants to have experiences that it knows how to deal with because its main concern is to keep you safe, healthy and whole. Your true potential, which is limitless, is the contrast of the ego. Anyone who has ever accomplished anything great has done so with great risk. Not necessarily physical or emotional danger, but at great risk as far as the ego is concerned. See, the ego doesn't know how to deal with new situations based on new beliefs - it only knows how to handle situations it's experienced. The process of doing something you haven't done before is the great risk because you are stepping out of your comfort zone and stepping into your true potential. If it feels a lot like stepping out into mid-air - it's because it is. You are literally stepping into new territory. To create different results you must step out of your comfort zone so you're taking action from a different set of beliefs. Stagnation is comfortable….growth is uncomfortable. All that you are and have experienced is the result of beliefs that have built your comfort zone. Mastering your life and fulfilling your true potential comes down to how willing you are to get uncomfortable. Struggling to make progress? Not seeing the results you want? Here's why. "I want to lose weight" ... Is not compelling enough It is not enough to stop you from eating for emotional reasons. If a doctor told a smoker "the next cigarette you smoke, your heart will explode", that doesn't mean the smoker won't crave cigarettes ever again But there's a very powerful reason for them not to smoke. Powerful enough that they will dig deep and endure the difficult cravings. They have a reason NOT to smoke, that is more powerful than their cravings Maybe you want change. You want things to be different. But you don't want to change. There's a big difference between wanting CHANGE and wanting TO CHANGE. If you want change? You MUST change how you are living. Here's how you can do this. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS When you're ready, here's 5 ways I can help you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you’re genuinely ready to find practical strategies to be living an AWESOME life, there's never a better time than now. We all have fears that stop us from stepping into our potential. It’s what we’ve come to call the comfort zone - the place where fear is minimized to allow for daily life functioning. But we don’t always realize just how much we give up for the sake of comfort. In an effort to minimize our greatest fears we can be sacrificing our heart’s deepest desires. That’s great if it’s operating from an effective set of rules and programs - but it doesn’t always do so. It’s no secret we are a product of our environment: the beliefs we are exposed to as children often set the tone of a lifetime of experiences. In other words, the operating system most of us are functioning from was created long before we had conscious choice to reject the limiting beliefs that came from other people. (That’s the kicker - Most people don’t even realize their limiting beliefs aren’t theirs!) The struggle comes in when we’re operating on limiting beliefs that tell us one thing, when we crave another. We crave individual expression and expansion, yet our operating system tells us it’s dangerous - or we’ll fail - or we’ll face rejection or criticism. Thinking this way had me feeling shame, anxiety, and self-loathing. This negative mindset did not motivate me to inspired action. In 2019, I'm committed to breaking this habit, so I can love myself more fully and create more intentionally. I share my three biggest takeaways from the awesome book "Breaking the Habit of Being You" by Dr. Joe Dispensa (https://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Habit-Being-Yourself-Create/dp/1401938094), which are: 1. Feature Presentation: “The Power Of Belief” Our beliefs are, in large part, not chosen by us consciously. Quote from Ayn Rand: As a human being, you have no choice about the fact that you need a philosophy. Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation – or let your subconscious accumulate a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes, doubts and fears, thrown together by chance, but integrated by your subconscious into a kind of mongrel philosophy and fused into a single, solid weight: self-doubt, like a ball and chain in the place where your mind's wings should have grown. How do we form beliefs? * Sensory data * what is it? * what does it mean? * what should I do? Beliefs help form * values * rules * behavior * quality of life 1. My value is in my ability to produce. (My value is in my ability to initiate production.) 2. I have to be the best if I want to lead. (Leadership is bringing out the best in others.) 3. I can’t help people who have more success than me. (I want ALL the people I help to have MORE success than me.) 4. I want no employees because employees equal problems. (Employees help me multiply wealth – for me, themselves, and our clients. Everybody wins) 5. Some people have special gifts no one else can have. (“What one man can do, another man can do.“) 6. The purpose of wealth is to help others. (The purpose of wealth is to show God’s glory – and the”glory of God is a man fully alive”.) 7. Life is hard, and then you die. (In this world we will have trouble – but Jesus has overcome the world.. so we should be encouraged.) Start noticing your beliefs. Start questing them. And if they don’t serve you, start changing them! It’s not an easy position for faithful Catholics to stake out, criticizing a popular pope. But Ross Douthat is worried about where Pope Francis is leading the Catholic Church. In his new book, To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism, the New York Times op-ed columnist argues that Francis’ “truces” with the modern world—specifically his more pastoral approach on issues ranging from divorce and same-sex relationships to euthanasia—threaten to not only divide and weaken the church but betray the very words of Jesus. We ask Ross whether he thinks people in the pews share his concerns, what mercy means for Catholics who feel hurt by Catholic teachings and what gives him hope about the church. In Signs of the Times: a Catholic school showcases a caged tiger at prom. Bad idea or the worst idea? Plus, new rules for contemplative nuns, the United States’ first African-American priest gets a step closer to sainthood, thoughts on the new Pope Francis biopic and news from the Holy Land. Recorded on February 27, 2018 What do Catholics think of Pope Francis’s changes to the Catholic Church? Ross Douthat explores that question in his new book, To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism. Douthat joins Peter Robinson on Uncommon Knowledge to discuss his new book, his thoughts and critiques of Pope Francis, and the changing conception of divorce under Pope Francis’s ambiguous teachings. Douthat and Robinson spend a large portion of the episode discussing the Catholic teachings surrounding marriage, divorce, and communion. They examine the history of Catholicism and divorce, going back so far as to understand the lessons of the New Testament on divorce and how those lessons were radically conservative for the time. They talk about how problematic the terms “conservative” and “liberal” are when used in the context of the Church as the political leanings do not necessarily correlate with moral leanings of religion. They go on to discuss the future of the Catholic Church under Pope Francis and how the Bishops can handle all of the changes. Did you like the show? Please rate, review, and subscribe! REFLECTION QUOTES “All human relations are inherently power relations. The question of how to use power properly, though paradoxical, is therefore also inescapable.” ~James Hunter, To Change the World “No! With that power I should have power too great and terrible. And over me the Ring would gain a power still greater and more deadly! Do not tempt me! For I do not wish to become like the Dark Lord himself. Yet the way of the Ring to my heart is by pity, pity for weakness and the desire of strength to do good. Do not tempt me! I dare not take it, not even to keep it safe, unused.” ~Gandalf, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings “Scripture tells us that, in the as yet unredeemed world in which the Church also exists, the State has by divine appointment the task of providing for justice and peace. [It fulfills this task] by means of the threat and exercise of force, according to the measure of human judgment and human ability. The Church acknowledges the benefit of this divine appointment in gratitude and reverence before him. It calls to mind the Kingdom of God, God's commandment and righteousness, and thereby the responsibility both of rulers and of the ruled. It trusts and obeys the power of the Word by which God upholds all things.” “We reject the false doctrine, as though the State, over and beyond its special commission, should and could become the single and totalitarian order of human life, thus fulfilling the Church's vocation as well.” “We reject the false doctrine, as though the Church, over and beyond its special commission, should and could appropriate the characteristics, the tasks, and the dignity of the State, thus itself becoming an organ of the State.” ~The Barmen Declaration (1934) “Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust. Lebanon would not suffice for fuel, nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering. All the nations are as nothing before him, they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.” ~Isaiah 40:15-17 SERMON PASSAGE 2 Samuel 9:1-13 (ESV) 1 And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?” 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” And he said, “I am your servant.” 3 And the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?” Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet.” 4 The king said to him, “Where is he?” And Ziba said to the king, “He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar.” 5 Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. 6 And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” 7 And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” 8 And he paid homage and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?” 9 Then the king called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, “All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master's grandson. 10 And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master's grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master's grandson shall always eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. 11 Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David's table, like one of the king's sons. 12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all who lived in Ziba's house became Mephibosheth's servants. 13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet.

Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 81: In this episode of the Mind Body Musings Podcast, I introduce you to 10 inspirational intentions for the New Year. I believe the New Year is one of the craziest times of the year, especially in the media, as everybody is promoting their exercise programs, diets, training courses, or products. People use this as a time to encourage their followers to DO more. To CHANGE more. I have something to say about that. I don't believe the New Year is a time for you to set impossibly high standards for yourself, which will inevitably lead you feeling sad and "failure-like" when you can't reach them. Instead, I think you should create intentions for yourself to become more of who you are already, by coming out of the muck and all of the fog that's been surrounding you for the last year. I believe the New Year is a great time to de-clutter, de-stress, and be with yourself. Don't you agree? Here are my 10 inspirational intentions for the New Year... Show notes: Let go of anything no longer serving you Say NO more Acknowledge your inner critic Become what it is that you want Date yourself Experience more intimacy Simplify (don’t keep anything you don’t like, don’t do anything that’s pointless) Serve Don’t take anything personally (and take things less seriously) Be more, do less Do you have some that I missed? Please share in the comments below! [Tweet "Here's why you should focus on making intentions during the New Year instead of resolutions"] Additionally, HERE'S a video I recently made about why you shouldn't have a weight loss goal this New Year.

Alyssa's career started by complete accident after she moved to LA in 2004 to pursue her life long passion as a hip-hop dancer/choreographer. Friends heard her singing to herself, forced her to try karaoke one night, and the rest is history. One year later, having never professionally sang or recorded, she released her first two albums, “The Alyssa Jacey” EP and “Closed eyes… …open Heart” LP. After submitting to the San Diego County Fair in 2005, she was hired to perform multiple shows there that summer and all around town. Later that year she picked up a guitar and spent hours a day teaching herself so that by only after three short weeks was able to perform 30-minute sets, accompanying herself. The following year, “The Soul” EP was released after being flown to Miami to record it. This was the first album Alyssa played acoustic guitar on, as well as debuting her percussion, egg shaking skills, which would later turn in to an unexpected path as a drummer!“Turning Points” EP was released in 2009 (basically taking songs from “The Soul,” re-recording them and added a couple new tracks). By this time Alyssa had already performed over 200 shows both acoustically and with a full band, toured, had multiple TV and Radio interviews and performances, tons of press and she began playing drums at live shows. Jacey released what she calls her “first real CD,” titled, “Here's To Change,” in January of 2010. “It's the first time I had sent it off for duplication, had it properly designed, packaged, got the bar code, the whole 9.” This was also the first time she had released a 10-song, full length album, which you can hear on Alyssa Jacey Radio (Pandora.com) where she played acoustic guitar on almost every song. This one features her hit single, “Fall Out of Love,” which has continued to get radio airplay since it's release. Watch her professional music video on her Youtube channel. Now 10 years later, Alyssa has performed over 1,100 self-booked live shows/tours (click this link to read the latest review on a live concert she performs every Tuesday night online,) sung the National Anthem for the Padres, Lingerie Football League (and others), a multi-instrumentalist, and played shows with Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Bruno Mars, Meiko, Serena Ryder, Angel Taylor, Ryan Star, Joan Osborne, Sophie B. Hawkins, PEPPER, Bob Marley's The Wailers, Keith Anderson, Andy Grammer. It is approaching 2.5 years ago, when Alyssa took a major step and moved from everything she knew from being born and raised in San Diego (Family, friends, where she billy block showgraduated college, favorite venues) and moved to Nashville, TN. In that short amount of time, Alyssa has already accomplished the following: Released four singles and soon to be her second full-length album, written roughly 50 new songs, played over 350 live shows, performed/interviewed live on both tv and radio, had meetings with record labels, publishing companies, signed three non-exclusive deals with three different licensing companies, had management interest and the list keeps growing. From day one, Alyssa has done everything herself: Management (both individually and for her band when she has one), production, releasing of albums, marketing, promotion. “Alyssa Jacey is single-handedly THE most self-motivated person I've ever met,” says Ray Gmeiner of Virgin/Capitol Records, and you don't have to know her to agree; It's all over the Internet and in any press you've ever read. This kid is one heck of an ambitious, stop at nothing, goal-reaching go-getter, and that's putting it lightly. It's only a matter of time before something major breaks for this artist!

REFLECTION QUOTES “But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.'” ~Acts 9:15-16 “Whenever guilt is used as a tool to get people to do anything—good, bad, indifferent—it's bullying. And then there's manipulative language—to talk people into programs, to get them involved, usually by promising them something. I have a friend who is an expert at this sort of thing. He's always saying, ‘You've got to identify people's felt needs. Then you construct a program to meet the felt needs.' It's pretty easy to manipulate people. We're so used to being manipulated by the image industry, the publicity industry, and the politicians that we hardly know we're being manipulated. This impatience to leave the methods of Jesus in order to get the work of Jesus done is what destroys spirituality, because we're using a non-biblical, non-Jesus way to do what Jesus did. That's why spirituality is in such a mess as it is today.” ~Eugene Peterson (1932-present) “Celebrity is, in effect, based on inflated brilliance, accomplishment, or spirituality generated and perpetuated by publicity. It is an artifice and, therefore, a type of fraud. Celebrity must, of necessity, draw attention to itself. The justification one often hears is that more people are reached in this way, yet there are often financial interests at stake for the celebrity leader and his or her organization, and these can either obscure or undermine the ends of outreach. Such leadership is artificial, unbiblical, organizationally unhealthy, inherently corrupting, and all too common in the Christian world—especially in the United States.” ~James Davison Hunter (1955-present), To Change the World “People often think of Christian morality as a kind of bargain in which God says, ‘If you keep a lot of rules, I'll reward you, and if you don't, I'll do the other thing.' I do not think that is the best way of looking at it… To be the one kind of creature is heaven, that is, it is joy and peace and knowledge and power. To be the other means madness, horror, idiocy, rage, impotence, and eternal loneliness. Each of us at each moment is progressing to one state or the other.” ~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), Mere Christianity SERMON PASSAGE Acts 22:25- 23:24 25 But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.” 27 So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” 28 The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I am a citizen by birth.” 29 So those who were about to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also was afraid, for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him. 30 But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them. Chapter 23 1 And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.” 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. 3 Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?” 4 Those who stood by said, “Would you revile God's high priest?” 5 And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'” 6 Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. 9 Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” 10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks. 11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.” 12 When it was day, the Jews made a plot and bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. 13 There were more than forty who made this conspiracy. 14 They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul. 15 Now therefore you, along with the council, give notice to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near.” 16 Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush, so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul. 17 Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the tribune, for he has something to tell him.” 18 So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, “Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you.” 19 The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?” 20 And he said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him. 21 But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, waiting for your consent.” 22 So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him, “Tell no one that you have informed me of these things.” 23 Then he called two of the centurions and said, “Get ready two hundred soldiers, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea at the third hour of the night. 24 Also provide mounts for Paul to ride and bring him safely to Felix the governor.”

Peace is often only thought of in the context of war. However, there is a much different kind of Peace available that is spoken to us from ancient and current teachers.  Inner Peace. They all seem to be saying the same thing: To Change your Perspective(Beliefs/Thoughts) you need to Aim for Inner Peace and from that will spring True Happiness. Sounds great, we know. How in the holy heck do we achieve such a thing?! Well, the first step is in taking Aim. Not with a rifle, or missile but with our Minds and Hearts.

In his book Culture Wars (1992) Hunter "coined" the term that titled the book and it has been a staple within popular circulation ever since. He argued that America was in the midst of a "culture war" over "our most fundamental and cherished assumptions about how to order our lives." In 1998 Wolfe challenged this idea of a culture war in One Nation After All. He proposed the alternate thesis, that a majority of Americans were seeking a middle way, a blend of the traditional and the modern. With the nation seemingly polarized as ever these two distinguished scholars will discuss what this means for religion, society, and identity in America. James Davison Hunter is Labrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture, and Social Theory at the University of Virginia and Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture. His various works are centered around the problem of meaning and moral order in a time of political and cultural change in American life. His most recent book To Change the World: The Irony, Tragedy, and Possibility of Christianity in the Late Modern World. Alan Wolfe is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life at Boston College. He is the author and editor of more than 20 books, most recently, The Future of Liberalism and his work has appeared in Commonwealth, The New York Times, Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, The Washington Post.
