Sophie Walker, host of the Australian Birth Stories podcast and author of The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth and The Complete Guide to Postpartum: A Mother-Focused Companion for Life After Birth, joins Dr. Rebecca Dekker to explore what it really takes to plan for a nourishing postpartum experience and the challenges and strengths of the Australian birth system. Sophie shares how a traumatic first birth sparked her passion for informed decision-making, why continuity of midwifery care matters, and how her country's publicly funded postpartum home visits and mothers' groups create critical support networks. Together, Sophie and Dr. Dekker unpack the postpartum cliff that so many new parents face, discuss how to prepare mentally, emotionally, and physically for life after birth, and offer tips on everything from pelvic floor recovery to sleep expectations to navigating newborn feeding. Nate Littlewood, fractional CFO and mentor, is on today's episode to shed some light on the 3 most common financial challenges that affects most e-commerce entrepreneurs and talks about how to fix them. He talks about the ways you can optimize inventory, cash flow, and reduce overhead costs. Get mystery shopped for your brand and 2 competitors of your choice FOR FREE! Stord will provide a detailed report that outlines the specific areas you are out performing your competitors and where your competitors are outperforming you. Learn how your consumers truly experience your brand today! Cash flow is king when it comes to e-commerce businesses. More often than not business owners need to use debt to order more inventory, while keeping the price the same. Does that really make sense if all your profit ends up going to your SBA loan leaving you with nothing? It doesn't. That's why in today's episode we have Nate Littlewood on the podcast. He's a fractional CFO with a background in finance, and he helps e-commerce entrepreneurs figure out how they can improve their finance literacy. He's on the podcast today to talk about the 3 ways e-commerce businesses can improve their profit margins so they can start feeling their bank accounts grow. The Big Takeaways Many entrepreneurs have most of their cash flow tied up in inventory, making business cash flow a huge struggle. Fixing inventory can be an easy way to gain back some cash flow which makes your business more nimble and adaptable. Every now and then, you should assume that your SaaS budget is zero and make a case for why certain tools need to be purchased again. The 80-20 rule or The Pareto principle should help you with deciding which products to axe and which to keep. Offering more product variations does not lead to linear increased sales. Having low cash flow stops your business from growing faster than it could. Investing in supply chain optimization can also free up cash flow for your business. From our guest preacher for this Sunday…Over the last few weeks, various pastors at St. Patrick have preached on the profound messages of Jesus in the book of Mark. The thoughts are not shocking because they contain some wildly philosophical sayings…but they are amazing because they are true. Throughout the Book of Mark, the people that surrounded Jesus - his followers and his disciples - heard his words and their minds were blown. Many of Jesus' sayings seemed complicated, and most didn't really understand…why? Because they were working off an equation given to them by the world around them…and what was the equation? You only get what you give. You earn rewards for whatever you worked for. Even believers today – that get the good news of Christ – still think same way.The rich, young ruler that we will be discussing this week is a prime example. He was confronted by Jesus in a way that not only challenged him to give up what was most valuable…but called for him to substitute it for something better.

Join us as we dissect the use of robotics in bariatric surgery – where precision meets programming, and the scalpel gets a software upgrade. Hosts: - Matthew Martin, trauma and bariatric surgeon at the University of Southern California/Los Angeles General Medical Center (Los Angeles, California) - Adrian Dan, bariatric and MIS surgeon, program director for the advanced MIS bariatric and foregut fellowship at Summa Health System (Akron, Ohio) - Crystal Johnson Mann, bariatric and foregut surgeon at the University of Florida (Gainesville, Florida) - Katherine Cironi, general surgery resident at the University of Southern California/Los Angeles General Medical Center (Los Angeles, California) Learning objectives: Strengths of the robot: Surgical robots are at the forefront of technology and continue to improve with detailed, precision cameras and the ability to remove baseline tremors Allows for smooth movements, fine dissection, and precise tissue handling Ergonomics are more advantageous to the surgeon when compared to laparoscopy Weaknesses of the robot: The loss of haptic feedback can be challenging for surgeons early in their learning curve Emphasis on surgical robots means some trainees may be losing exposure to laparoscopic techniques Longer operative time when working robotically, and more time under anesthesia for the patient Increased cost for robotic surgery Outcomes data: Mixed data from the MBSA QIP database (metabolic and bariatric surgery accreditation and quality improvement program) The most recent study looked at 824,000 patients from 2015-2022 who had a sleeve gastrectomy or RNY gastric bypass, either laparoscopically (lap sleeve 61%, lap RYGB 24%) or robotically (robo sleeve 11%, robo RYGB 4%). Robotic sleeves were reported to have higher complication rates compared to laparoscopy, seen as higher overall morbidity and an increased rate of leaks While the robotic RYGBs have lower overall complications, including decreased morbidity and bleeding. Robotic RYGB can be especially advantageous with revisional surgeries when compared to lap. Setting up for success Train your eyes to determine tension on tissue, since there is no haptic feedback Learn how to assist yourself (manipulating the camera and effectively utilizing the fourth arm) Understand how techniques of the surgery change when doing it robotically, as compared to laparoscopy Experienced operating room team When learning, recommend putting all cases feasible on the robot (including easier cases), to master the straightforward cases before moving to technically challenging revision cases. Don't hesitate to add an additional trocar or assistant port when needed Education in Robotic learning Learning by observation/mirroring – ex: robotic bilateral inguinal hernia (mirroring the attending/instructor) Easy for the attending/instructor in the case to switch instruments seamlessly, then give them back intermittently at the appropriate time Helpful when the attending annotates the screen to depict where to go Data-driven teaching tools on the Davinci system Tips for robotic sleeve gastrectomy: Of the robotic bariatric surgeries, sleeve gastrectomy is most similar to its laparoscopic procedure 30-40 degrees of reverse Trendelenburg Liver hammock stitch instead of a liver retractor (one less trocar), which makes a total of 4 trocars needed for the case Green staple load for the first firing, then the rest are typically blue loads Mixed opinions on reinforced staple loads versus non-reinforced staple loads and oversewing the staple line (discussed cost-benefit) Tips for robotic gastric bypass: Watch videos from colleagues to learn what they do Gastric bypass is a multi-quadrant surgery; thus, you must set yourself up for success so that your arms are not fighting when moving through different quadrants A size 12 trocar on the left can make the formation of the gastric pouch easier GJ and JJ anastomosis formed with a linear fire, then a two-layer closure with absorbable barb suture Don't forget to close the mesenteric defect (non-absorbable braided suture) Tips for robotic DS and SADI: If doing a duodenal anastomosis hand-sewn, then recommend planning the exact number of sutures and locations of each for ease Hand-sewn anastomosis can have less bleeding and fewer strictures for patients, and is completed in a much more seamless fashion with the robot Future of Robotics Haptic feedback Integrated visual overlays to identify anatomical structures/serve as an intraoperative map Artificial intelligence integration Telesurgery – ex, small surgical robot deployed to space Please visit https://behindtheknife.org to access other high-yield surgical education podcasts, videos and more. Drawing from Romans 12:6-8, this devotional encourages believers to identify, celebrate, and use their unique spiritual gifts and talents instead of dwelling on flaws. Embracing your natural strengths not only aligns you with God’s design but also empowers you to serve more confidently and effectively in your personal and professional life. Highlights Many people spend too much time trying to fix weaknesses, losing sight of the powerful strengths God has given them. Formal strength assessments or simple reflection can help you discover your unique spiritual gifts and natural abilities. Romans 12:6-8 encourages using your strengths faithfully rather than obsessing over weaknesses. God’s purpose for you is best fulfilled when you lean into what you’re naturally good at, making a greater impact for His kingdom. Focusing on your strengths leads to greater confidence, wise decisions, and freedom to be your true self in Christ. Strengths-based living helps overcome weaknesses without becoming paralyzed by them.
