But not all in the land of 6 cylinders is lost. Derek and Jason kick off the new year by driving an iconic race car that happens to be road-legal - the 1974 Porsche Carrera RSR IROC. A car they both agree, is perhaps the most extreme 911 either of them has ever driven. The story goes - in October of 1973, Roger Penske took delivery 15 of special 1974 cars in Riverside California, which had been built to his order. He acquired the cars to participate in the first ever International Race of Champions (IROC), which was actually a series of four races, three at Riverside in late October and the final race at Daytona in February of 1974. The cars would be driven by a dozen of the best racing drivers in the world, hailing from different racing disciplines including Indy, Can-Am, NASCAR, and Formula 1. In the hands of George Follmer and Mark Donahue at Riverside International Raceway, this particular car won twice - more than any other of the 15 cars it competed against. During his final eight shows Mark Garrow will bring along some of the most interesting people and stories he's run into during his 40-year career. First up Hall of Famers Ned Jarrett and Red Farmer with some funny goings on during the old Daytona beach races.

With the scene set, it's off to the races in 1980. The NASCAR Cup Series heads out to Riverside, California, to begin the season, and sophomore Dale Earnhardt is hoping to improve his road course performance. He will, in fact, finish runner-up to Darrell Waltrip, who, after a narrow loss in the 1979 points race, is regarded as a championship favorite for this year. Dale caps his successful West Coast trip off with a new season sponsor and a contract extension with Rod Osterlund, and he's understandably feeling at the top of his game.He rolls that confidence into Daytona Beach, where he shows his first glimpses of supernatural ability on the superspeedway high banks. He makes a last lap pass on the outside of Darrell Waltrip to pick up his first victory at the track, the Busch Clash. The Daytona 50 mile race is in the books.  It was my first road ultramarathon, and I continue to learn a little something at each race.  I believe the learning points can be applied to any new task or long term goal.   1. Break a goal down into small parts.  This seems obvious but the trick is staying in the small part and not looking into the daunting future.  2. Have a strategy for each segment before the segment begins and follow the plan.  Variables come up, there is always the unknown, but a strategy is a must for a baseline. 3. What is your time frame? Can you stick to it? Have you ever started a trip without a time plan?  The progress is not always what you want.  4. Stiffness is a real concern with sitting during an ultramarathon.  However, you can get started again.  5. Nutrition is best handled without relying on an aid station for solid foods for the most part. Its is not a buffet.  6. Salty britches is a must for blister prevention.  I hope you enjoy my story. When Dale Earnhardt Jr. had his longtime friend and crew member Kevin “Two Beers” Pennell on the Download last time, their conversation was so engrossing that he had to come back for more. They pick up where they left off, in Dale Jr.'s rookie season in the famed Bud 8 car. They recall some choice encounters with Dale Sr., including a wreck at Bristol and their Cup debut at Martinsville, where Dale Jr. couldn't get out of the way quickly enough. Dale and Kevin relive their thrilling victory in the 2000 All-Star race, where some key decision-making by Tony Eury Jr. helped put them in contention. The 2001 Daytona 500 is also discussed, with both men sharing their respective experiences of the post-race events after Dale Sr.'s tragic accident. Dale and Kevin talk about some “ingenuity” and “innovation” that was taking place in the shop and on pit road to help close the gap on the more established Cup teams.
