This conversation is deep. Existential. Radical. Why? Because Laureline Simon speaks to the root cause of the harm that's impacting on each of us, every community and ecosystem across the breadth of our shared planet. This conversation hits home, in a nurturing, generative way, as Laureline speaks from lived experience striving in global systems and shows meaningful examples of how this harm can be repaired. It's been an honour to cocreate many wonderful conversations on Better World Leaders over the past two years. In that time there's been many a dialogue which has given me cause for reflection, and this conversation with Laureline crests the list of those that have. Her openness to explore deeply personal experiences, the range of her experience working through the United Nations across the globe, and the frankness of her insights speak to the fundamental nature of how we must change if we are truly to become resilient as individuals, societies and as a species once again.Laureline Simon is the Founder Director of One Resilient Earth, a European based Not-for-Profit who partner with numerous global and hyper-local organisations on multi-level, systemic initiatives to enable resilient communities by nurturing shifts in mindset, community connection and ecosystem restoration. This work is as inspirational as it is transformative, and provides a wonderful example to us all of how nurturing conditions for interdependent complexity to thrive is vital for the wellbeing of our beings, and the planetary system that sustains us all.I hope our conversation brings you both contemplation and inspiration. It was a great joy speaking with Laureline and I was both validated and informed by our discussion. We both welcome your thoughts and reflections via the connection links below if you'd like to reach out. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Shifting mindsets- It's a big moment when we realise how much we need to unlearn and decentre our worldviews- Is it just industrialisation, or is there a deeper worldview that enables industrial exploitation of the world's resources?- What if we weren't thinking about nature & people as resources?- What if the idea of separation of ourselves from nature, which is a mindset, is the root cause of the crisis?- Climate change is a symptom of the crisis of relationship we have with the world and nature- The ecological crisis is a crisis of relationship- We wouldn't be exploiting people if we didn't consider them to be different from us- We need to build capability to operate on multiple levels at the same time; that's why we work with resilient mindsets, thriving communities and restoring ecosystems- People may not realise that a lot of the decisions which are made in response to climate change are coming from a threat response.- We have one Earth and many worldsActions for impact- You can have global actions that have little impact, and you can have local actions that have real impact- It's more about coalitions or networks and experimenting with ways of being more radical- It's about addressing the root causes of an issue, otherwise everything you do is cosmetic- There's nothing worse than feeling that you're taking positive action, when in actual fact all that you're doing is reinforcing a system that is causing harm- The actions we need to take are much deeper than reducing greenhouse gases, we have to repair our relationships with ecosystems and people who have been harmedSystemic change- I've been into the systems, and the premises are flawed- We are too resource dependant, and are not even nurturing the ecosystems that provide our resources- How can we change in a way which is commensurate with the change that's coming?- We're actually really good at adapting to complex systems when we are deeply connected to them and sensorily aware of their existence- We need to build communities of support as we go through radical shifts- It's about a deeper societal transformation, a cultural transformation- Having a more regenerative approach, building our relationships, developing new relationships with ourselves, to our fears, our pain and discomfort, if we are going to become the people who can deal with the scale of changeNurturing conditions- The conditions we need to nurture depends on the people and the context- If we don't look at the health of ecosystems we're not going to nurture conditions for the systems that sustain us.- We need many different approaches working together, with people nurturing the conditions that are best for them- The conditions we need to nurture depends on the people and the contextFind out more about Laureline and her work here:LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/laureline-s/LinkedIn page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/one-resilient-earthInstagram page: https://www.instagram.com/oneresilientearth/YouTube page : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkxlFnIdd3wdzbjv8ZhUVCAOne Resilient Earth - https://oneresilientearth.org/Our climate circles: The Climate Workers Circle and the Youth Climate Circlehttps://oneresilientearth.org/the-youth-climate-circle/https://oneresilientearth.org/the-climate-workers-circle/The Youth Learning Journey for Climate Resilience and Regeneration (September -October 2022)https://oneresilientearth.org/the-youth-learning-journey-for-climate-resilience-regeneration-2/Our certified course in partnership with the UNESCO chair at Hanze University, titled:Futures Literacy for Climate Resilience and Transformation (27-29 June 2022)https://oneresilientearth.org/futures-literacy-for-climate-resilience-and-transformation/Other local events that we advertise on the website such as our Ecotopia exhibition inBerlin from mid-May to earl-July 2022https://oneresilientearth.org/taking-part-in-ecotopia-in-berlin/For other events: https://oneresilientearth.org/news/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Of the many new connections I made through the lockdowns of 2020, very few matched the energy and capacity for both vastly expansive and hyper detailed dialogue than today's guest. Ben Newsome is an educator, a Founder and ambassador for progressive educational practice and I'm delighted to welcome him today.Ben Newsome founded Fizzics Education to deliver science education across Australia, having now reached 2 million kids since 2004. He is also the author of ‘Be Amazing! How to teach science the way primary kids love' & the host of the FizzicsEd Podcast. In 2012 Ben co-founded the non-profit Virtual Excursions Australia which has now grown to include over 40 major cultural institutions and departmental distance education managers, where together VEA members create collaborative video conference events and share tips and tricks on best practice. In 2015 he co-founded another non-profit called the Pinnacle Education Collaborative, a network of over 30 cultural organisations in North America that deliver virtual excursions to schools, retirement homes, remand centres and more.I hope our conversation brings you energy, cause to pause and reflect on your own educational journey and how you continue to learn today and in to the future. Ben and I look forward to hearing any thoughts, reflections or questions you have in response to our cocreated conversation – reach out or post via your preferred podcast platform or any of the connective links below. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Perceptions of reality- We need to consider what actually makes people understand how the world works- There's a disconnect between what people understand is happening and what the reality is.Education- For me it was an equity access problem- Let's be honest, the curriculum is contentious- Are we teaching what to learn or how to learn?Systems thinking- There's an issue when you're dealing with scale, that there's not a one size fits all- There's a real dynamic between local knowledge & systems knowledge, how do you fill the gap?- Think about why you're trying to solve the thingInnovation- If you're saying it's my way or the highway, then you're highway better be pretty good!- You're best thinking 5 years ago is your baggage today- The world is not static, pay attention to what's changing and adjust and adapt accordinglyNurturing conditions for leaders- Ben recommends these specific conditions to nurture i) constructive dialogue ii) diverse teams iii) resilience to the grind of time iv) fearlessness to handle failure- Diversity is vital - The richer the experiences of people the more likely to solve problems- Failure is 100% a marker of success- Empathy is the conductive fluid between dialogue, fearlessness and resilienceFind out more about Ben and his work here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-newsome-cf-frsa-03169734/https://twitter.com/BenNewsome_https://www.fizzicseducation.com.au/https://www.virtualexcursionsaustralia.com.au/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. In the midst of a CoVid lockdown, I discovered a book that it felt like was speaking directly to me, and in doing so, touching my soul. The author and I shared a desire to see a significant shift in the country we both love, and in the wider world. That shift speaks of rediscovery. Of a way of being that all humans know, and many appear to have forgotten. What is called for, the author proposed is in fact nothing short of a revolution. A Kindness Revolution. I was moved to write to him, expressing my deepest gratitude for what I received in reading his work over the years, my appreciation of the shared meaning I discovered in his words, and my shared hope for a future filled with kindness. In that note I invited him to co-create a conversation here, which I am deeply honoured that he accepted.Welcome to the conversation with Hugh Mackay. His latest book, The Kindness Revolution, brings together many of his views shared in previous books based on over 6 decades of work, becoming one of Australia's best known and highly regarded social researchers since the publication of his first book, Australia Reimagined. Hugh's journey as a researcher began before the popularisation of television, and his career has witnessed 3 significant social revolutions, including the most recent rise of social media influence on social interaction. As Hugh says in The Kindness Revolution, he's come to recognise the potential transformative value of kindness, and that in fact what is needed is a more radical, revolutionary brand of kindness. The significance of Hugh's work is profound, a gift to Australia, and the world, and it was a great joy to explore with him the potential meaning of kindness in contributing to creating a better world.I hope our conversation brings you joy and provocation, as well as reflection on the potential for you to bring more kindness into your life, and what you might create in the world, and the change you might activate, as you do.Here's a review of the key messages from this episode, based on extracts from the dialogue;Change- We are the social change. We drive social trends.- These trends are pushing us in a direction which takes us away from our true nature.- No revolution ever started at the top, because the people at the top think everything is terrific.- Do we need memetic evolution or violent revolution?- Change needs to start with us living as though it was the kind of society we want to see.Belonging- We happen to be members of a social species. We need each other.- A sense of belonging is vital to a social species hardwired for collaboration.- Our shared humanity is far more important than a focus on our individual personal identity.- Be more accepting of difference, because we all share a common humanity, any difference is trivial.Prosperity- One thing that's driven us in this dangerous direction is economic prosperity.- We have had leadership celebrating individual prosperity.- We've had the wrong kind of leadership & too much prosperity.Kindness- Make kindness your way of being in the world.- Kindness is anything we do for another person which acknowledges them & their needs.- Ask yourself, does this act pass the kindness test?- As a kindness practice, we need a conscious reflection - was I kind enough today?- We've all been wounded, and are walking with tragedies large or small. The universal balm is kindness.- When I listen to someone, they receive it as a therapeutic gift.- Every act of kindness makes the world a better place.Find out more about Hugh and his work here:https://www.panmacmillan.com.au/author/hugh-mackay/As well as reading The Kindness Revolution, Hugh has particularly recommended these 2 of his books – What Makes Us Tick & The Good Life.Hugh also recommends that you check out the work of the Stay Kind Foundation - https://www.staykind.org/ - in particular look out for their ‘Kindfest' initiative in July.Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Have you ever been in a session when someone shows up who you sense you recognise the essence of?You can't place them, you know you've not met them before, yet something connects you that seems somehow familiar. That was my experience the first time I met Lauren Tucker.Part way through a Regenerative Business Summit in which Lauren was Resource for our team, I joined the dots, that I knew of Lauren and her work as Founder of an organisation I had long supported and admired – Kiss the Ground. What I emerged from our brief conversation that day, and germinated in following conversations – most expansively in the conversation shared here – is that Lauren was being called to evolve the the work through which I knew her. She explained that she was now being drawn into another space, a disruptive, systemic transformational space, where in bringing a community together to explore new ways of thinking and enter into new ways of being – deep regeneration would be possible.Welcome to the conversation with Lauren about how we regenerate one of our most vital, connective and nurturing systems – our Food system. What will it take for us to shift away from our embedded industrial capitalist frameworks of food as mere commodified calories, and into something so much more generative…listen on and let's explore together! Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Disruption- I realised that the system itself wasn't changing very much- We were focused on making things so simple that we weren't bothering to disrupt anything- Something disruptive happens so you see something in a different light, that you can't unsee.- We're setting up a community where we are intentionally creating a disruptionCulture- We assume we can only work on one thing at a time. Really we need to work on things in a whole way.- I've been compelled by this sense of wanting to evolve culture- Food is something we all share & is our most direct way to think about our connection to being living beings- It's not education that shifts culture. It's mindset. Then, it's small communities of people creating different conversations through a shifted mindset, that then create actions from a different perspective.- There's enough duration for the integration to occur- What we need is not better function, or more intelligent business plans or better strategies. We have to change our thinking.New ways of being- I really wanted to challenge myself to work in a new way.- How do we work on our thinking first to see new potential?- There's a reflection around what that means in your own life. That often results in a shift in how you want to live, but you only integrate and sustain this shift if you build a new capability.- We're not living multiple lives. You don't have a work life, a home life, a life with your kids, a philanthropic life. You have one life.- What's essential in this community? What does this community want to evolve into? Now how would we create those conditions?- What is living systems thinking? How do living systems work? How do we hold complexity instead of reducing & simplifying things?Regeneration- I realised I had a deep desire to work on how do we hold more complexity and regenerate these systems- I got really excited by disruption and how do we regenerate our systems- What we've been talking about as regeneration is not really the essence of regeneration- What if instead we went back to the original essence of something and regenerated our understanding of it. Then we could see so much more potential.- How do we shift the role of our business to create the conditions for regeneration?Follow Lauren via the links below;https://farmersfootprint.us/renourish-studio-intro/https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauren-tucker-3034a714/https://www.whitebuffalolandtrust.org/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Rarely do I get the opportunity to welcome a guest with such a wonderful range of frames that have been used to describe their work – especially in combination! Our guest today is Wayne Visser, a professor, a poet, a possibilist and a pracademic.Throughout this season of Better World Leaders, we'll examine the conditions needed to co-create our better world. This conversation with Wayne provides a thorough exploration of the layers of shifting consciousness, discovery of new frameworks and creation of new structures through which we can create not just a better world, but a Thriving one.Wayne has been deeply immersed in the world of sustainability as a corporate advisor and Professorial academic for many years. His revelation is that despite decades of work by millions of well intentioned people, the variety problems we face and the scale of the challenges are greater than ever before – requiring fundamental changes in systems, ethos and beliefs. To usher in Wayne's vision of a Thriving world, we need new leaders to rise, with different capabilities, values and ethics striving to co-create new forms of society, through embracing nature, technologies and practices which in combination provide an opportunity to give life to a world which is far better than me might think. This is an inspiring tale, not only of what's possible in the future, and of what's already here – Wayne's work showcases hundreds of examples of thriving practices that are transforming the world for the better right now! Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Confronting Reality- Recognising that we're living a contradiction, as we all are in the world of paradox- You have to confront the brutal reality without giving up hope that a better world is possible- What we need is to up the game because so many of the problems have gotten so much worse- We don't need to change the whole world. All we need to do is change our world.Purpose- We see the emergence of purpose in business, not just profit.- Having something to believe in is a powerful force that can get you through anything- Bringing solutions to the worlds biggest problems is the role of businessLiving Systems- The underlying principles of thriving are living systems. Relationships. Circularity, creativity, coherence, convergence & continuity.- We currently rely on things running perfectly. That's not life.- All of life is about relationships- Creativity comes from diversity, flexibility and permeable boundaries.- Creativity always comes when we have overlapping fields- We need to think about nature as an ally in our search for resilienceLeading- What does leadership mean? To be a leader is someone who can take us on a journey- 6 attributes of leaders. Systemic. Inclusive. Strategic. Ethical/Moral. Innovative. Courageous.Thriving- To thrive is to flourish & prosper, to go beyond surviving- We've had a failure of storytelling because we've had a narrative of change that's all about sacrifice- Sustainability has failed because it's boring and not inspiring- The way to up the game is not to scare, blame or shame people. Rather it is to give them something inspiring to go after. That inspiring thing is thriving.- The companies that are going to be winners are those that will invest in thriving. The future- The future will be better than you think- The momentum is unstoppable, the more we spread the solutions, the faster it will occur.- Imagine workspaces full of waterfalls, mini-forests and social space- Offices will be places where we go to bond.- This is not just dreaming, everything Wayne says already has precedenceFollow Wayne via the links below;https://www.waynevisser.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/waynevisser/Grab a copy of ‘Thriving' here via Amazon, or here via Goodreads (including links to numerous on-line sellers, or from wherever you get books.Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Welcome to the fifth season of Better World Leaders. Throughout this season we'll be focusing on the theme of conditions, and considering what conditions do we need to nurture for leaders to co-create a better world.I'm delighted and honoured to bring you the first conversation of the season with a man who has devoted his life to creating conditions for people to discover themselves, transition liminal spaces and learn in ways which are much more conducive to life now (and in the world of the future) than our conventional approaches to learning. Welcome to the conversation with David Drake.David is the pioneer of two bodies of work — Narrative Coaching and Integrative Development — which share the same philosophical and pedagogical roots and are mutually generative. I've been aware of David's work in Narrative Coaching for around 5 years since being deeply moved by one of his coaching exercises in a training program. I have gravitated more and more to his work — culminating in enrolling in two of his developmental communities at the beginning of this year. This episode was recorded in December 2021 prior to me joining those spaces. I have been even more inspired now that I am in the programs. I feel deeply privileged to have spent more time with David, and I look forward to doing so for what I hope will be years to come. David is a wonderful activator of powerful learning experiences. His work steeped in a brilliant combination of research and evidence-based frameworks, and applied through constant practice in each individual's context. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode:Systems & Cultures- Most of the drivers of behaviour in a workplace have less to do with the people, and more to do with the cultures & systems in which they are working- The systemic and complex nature of the needs we face requires us to work across multiple disciplines and at multiple levels so we don't keep sending changed people back into unchanged environments.- We need to help people place their individual stories and journey within a broader and more inclusive context so they can make sense and meaning in new ways- Developing people is less about teaching with better curricula and more about facilitating with better conversationsHonouring differences- There is a need to create new, larger narratives that will keep us from driving each other further apart- We've over-emphasised our differences and lost much of our sense of the common good and our common humanity- The business models for many of the platforms is based on enraging people, exacerbating differences, and narrowing our focus.Respecting journeys- We need to honour & respect people for who and how they are as the only place to begin- My value is less about telling others what I know and more about coming alongside people and the journey they are already on to help them grow- The big work we need to do is found in from the unknown & the uncertain- The fundamental question in our work is, “What does this person need most right now?”Learning- The need is for more safe places for practice based learning rather than more content- The resolution that someone is seeking is already present- We have to let go of 'we have to study before we do' to free ourselves to learn and adapt faster- We need to free people up for serious play. In the final episode of our fourth season, I was delighted to co-create a conversation filled with pragmatism, hope and energy for tackling the major problems that exist in our world today. I was introduced to James McGregor by our very first BWL guest, Paul Dunn, on the basis of our shared passion and believe in systemic transformation.James has been involved in the commercialisation of sustainable innovation and technologies for over 15 years and has a wealth of knowledge on how to identify the crux of a systemic problem, converge stakeholders to address the issue and how to align novel approaches to commercial outcomes. In this conversation we map much of the terrain of James' life which will be familiar to regular listeners – what called him to doing this kind of work (after an early career in the military), how systemic work begins with individuals and organisations figuring out what's most important, and what particular capabilities they can bring to apply to creating a better world. This approach led James into the unanticipated chair of TV show producer, an unintended role which was, as James puts it, simply the right solution to the right problem.James and I look forward to hearing from you via the links below if there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Purpose- Get really clear on why you're doing what you're doing & what's important to your organisation- People think visions are enough. It's not.- I could see all the problems in the world, but didn't see the ideas that can help solve them getting out into the world- Being afraid isn't a bad thing. Fear has a job to do. It's job is to tell you to bring courage to the tableProblems- Look to solve problems at scale - e.g. how do we transform a region to a net zero economy?- Businesses are well placed to be the change-agents that fix these problems- We didn't set out to create a TV show - it ended up as the right solution to the right problem- Build into the storyline is a lot of social science about how you communicate sustainability so it resonates with consumersSustainable business- Doing good can be good for business- People look at sustainability as a cost item instead of a value creator across the business- Sustainability can be a revenue generator, increase profit by reducing operating costs, reduce risk making you more resilient to changes in the business environment & add assets to your balance sheet- Focus on how sustainability can solve problems for key stakeholders within your ecosystem- The sustainability outcome is a consequence of solving the right problem in your business or marketplace- Discovery process: 1 - understand your why, 2 - map ecosystem of business, 3 - gain stakeholder buy-inFollow James via the links below;http://www.bluetribe.co/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesmcgregor73/Watch the TV show James produces – Renovate or Rebuild hereOnline courses on developing and growing sustainable businesses (new courses coming soon) https://bluetribe.thinkific.com/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This conversation is a moving and meaningful one focused on how life lessons from adversity can provide opportunities for transformation and shifts into realisation of our purpose and fullest potential.Rebecca has endured what would be testing circumstances at the best of times, however her greatest challenge came not in isolation but in combination with other significant challenges which would throw many people into turmoil. She navigated these trials with humility, introspection and a devotion to appreciating the small things that become cascades of signals of the kind of work and way of living she is called to.In this conversation we touch on many topics that are close to both our hearts – how to nurture the conditions for inclusion and foster diversity in teams, organisation and broader society, our the adversity we face can lead to our greatest discoveries and personal transformations and the role of leaders in embracing new ways of being that can lead to the creation of more purposeful, values-centred organisations.Rebecca has released an article related to her Survive to Thrive approach, which you can find here - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-shift-from-surviving-thriving-mindset-new-model-rebecca/Rebecca and I look forward to hearing from you via our socials and emails is there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. Especially openness to learning, earnestness and being nothing like her!- Diverse teams don't always agree, but it's going to be a much richer discussion- A lot of people operate on auto-pilot, and respond to very different people in a very similar wayNew leaders- There's been a shift, we are letting go of the hierarchical model of leadership- Rebecca was always ok with not having the answer- Rebecca is seeing more people leaning into their strengths and bringing their authentic selves to work.- When developing our mindset, we need a deep level of curiosity about how we see the world.- Recognise the gifts from life that invite us to activate our highest potentialMeaning making- Understanding how I create a sense of meaning of the things around us is really important- If we're all moving in the same direction, it's much easier for us to course correct together- We all want to contribute and know why our work matters- If you're able to make a conscious choice to change beliefs you hold, you can move into long-term behaviour change- These experiences become the moments that matter in life and create real meaningThriving- When we're in a survival mindset, we feel helpless & that we can't have a positive influence- Raise awareness of where the dominant locus of control is- I made it a really focus to reimagine what was possible after this challenging experience- I created a life that was more in line with my values- Accepting that adversity is a part of life was really important- Being grateful began with really small things- The kindness you receive from people Rebecca really started noticing- These experiences become the moments that matter in life and create real meaningFollow Rebecca via the links below;https://www.thrivingpeopleconsulting.comLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-christianson/Email rebecca@thrivingpeopleconsulting.comFollow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This conversation is one of fellowship between myself and Tracy Eames, a leadership practitioner from the East Coast of the USA with whom I have discovered a great affinity and shared devotion to a foundational column of work for both of us – meaningful work.In Tracy's words, we all spend so much of our time at work with our teams, and all too often people do not find it rewarding. As we all talk about employee engagement and building culture, I often feel like the bigger point is being missed among a checklist of items that don't truly address the challenges we are trying to solve. When we come to work, we want to have a clear role that we know contributes to the success of our team and company i.e. we have meaningful work. We want to be a valued members of teams who are recognized for our successes and given the opportunity for future development growth and a celebrated contribution to each other, our organisation and the greater community we serve.By doing this, Tracy hopes to help people enjoy the long hours we all dedicate to our work, but also hope that our collective efforts help make the world a better place through more thoughtful and innovative solutions that solve our world's most complex challenges.Tracy and I met as fellow podcast hosts in an online collaboration space for podcast producers. This conversation is perhaps not what you might expect in a conversation with the Founder of a Venture Capital Fund. You won't find any mention here of debt-to-equity ratios, asset valuations or how to scale rapidly for a successful sale. What you will find is what Hernan Haro and I must say myself as well, believe is the essence of the kind of ventures that will transform our world. That brilliant, passionate, highly motivated people chose to start ventures that are orientated towards tackling the greatest challenges of our times because they are in love with problem. In this discussion, we explore Hernan's personal journey from software engineer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to co-Founder in Silicon Valley, post-sale into corporate America and back to BA as founder of a social-impact investment fund. He reveals what his experience has taught him about what truly makes a ventures successful – the Founder. Not the idea, not the product, the Founder. Critically, where the Founder comes from, why they have chosen to apply their talents to tackle one of our many wicked problems, and how open they are to learning and continually reframing the solutions they develop to address their chosen challenge. One of the true wonders of our world in this moment is the ability to connect with people across the globe, transcending geographic boundaries and cultural contrasts. I loved this conversation from start to finish. It's been a great pleasure getting to know Hernan over the last 6 months since we met in a professional networking forum, and exploring our many aligned values, believes and shared purpose to play our part supporting those who lead by striving in creating a better world. We look forward to hearing from you via our socials and emails is there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. You can reach out to either of us via the links below. Here's a review of the key messages from this episode;Trust- The VC world is driven by trust, passion & aligned mindsets- It took Hernan a long time to accept that faith, trust & confidence are what you need to prevail, knowing you will find a way.Inclusion- The lack of access to information & capital is deeply unfair- The number of deals done with VCs where the Founder does not have a direct connection to the fund is less than 10%- If you're part of the 99% who doesn't have a wealthy friend, your chances of getting funded are really lowDiversity- The importance of diversity is overwhelming- If you ask the same things of the same people, you're going to get the same answers.- We need to listen to the broadest range of people, because anyone can come up with the next big idea- Who is going to solve the next big challenge? Is it going to be someone who has never struggled to make ends meet? It's unlikely.- The ones who are closest to the problems are the ones who understand it best- You need to know how to lead in a diverse environmentLeading- Hernan is investing in the Founder's mission to solve a big problem- They have to be in love with the problem, because the solution is likely to be wrong- Hernan pays a lot of attention the story behind the Founders. Where have they come from & why have they chosen to do this?- Founders need to be humble, so they can ask for help, and be coachable- Everyday Hernan's co-Founder would ask, what did we learn today?- Are potential Founders learners and listeners?- As a Founder, if you look back at the way you are doing things 6 months ago, & you're not at least a little bit embarrassed, you're doing something wrong.Follow Hernan via the links below;https://mrpink.vc/https://www.linkedin.com/in/hernanharo/Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Every once in a while you connect deeply, completely and with absolute alignment with someone whose lived experience has been what you aspire to be. To find someone with whom I align so cohesively with living only a few kilometres across the mountains from my home and to have the opportunity to spend time with them and begin to get to know them is both an honour and a revelation.Welcome to the conversation co-created with Mickey Kovari, which we recorded side-by-side in ‘the Shoalhaven studio' in the workspace of my homeplace.Mickey is someone who describes himself as being uncomfortable with leading – despite having held role commonly associated with leadership, most recently as Deputy CEO of the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy and currently co-Founder of Native Foodways. Mickey prefers to think of his work as fellowship or community-ship, working in collaboration with First Nations peoples and enterprises. He has worked for a number of Indigenous-led social enterprises over the past 15 years. Our conversation focuses on Mickey's contribution through his work and his experience and insights into the essential need to, and benefits of centring First Nations ways of knowing, doing, and being. We discuss caring for Country and healing Country including regenerative or agroecological farming and land management as well as regenerative resource-use including clean energy and a focus on degrowth, and thus a rethink of capitalism. Caring for Culture, valuing, enriching, and practicing culture as a way to deepen meaning, expression, connection, and belonging and bringing more of a focus on language, art, dance, story and how they lead to wellbeing. Caring for Community, the rise of social enterprise and impact investment as a way to connect large amounts of powerful capital with meaningful and regenerative work and employment that employ community and serve community. Also the ongoing investment in community wellbeing programs, which are always best when linked to regenerative business model or framework so it can be linked in with the production of necessary goods and servicesWe look forward to hearing from you via our socials and emails is there's anything you would like to discuss or share in response to this conversation. It is distributed and highly contextual.- When you think about leadership, you think about followers. When you think about fellowship, you think about fellows.- It's always about community endorsed leadership without any source of cohesionHere's the list of books we referred to, and the link to the video we created directly after recording this episode in which Mickey introduces each of these works;- Treading Lightly, Tex Skuthorpe & Karl-Erik Sveiby- Fire Country, Victor Stefanson- Dark Emu, Bruce Pascoe- Wandu Mai, Damian Culthard- Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer- The Call of the Reed Warbler- Here's the link to the YouTube ‘Knowledge Quest' live stream in which Mickey adds a little more info about each of the resources we've shared – plus 1 more he snuck in!! - https://youtu.be/t0FaIV2qvkUFollow Mickey via the links below, and also grab a copy of her book (if you haven't done so already!):https://nativefoodways.com.au/https://www.instagram.com/nativefoodways/https://www.linkedin.com/company/native-foodwayshttps://www.facebook.com/nativefoodwayshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mickeykovari/https://twitter.com/mickeykovariHere's the link to the fundraising campaign ‘Blakcede' by Waminda as Mickey mentioned right at the end of the show, please consider giving generously to this awesome cause.https://www.chuffed.org/project/support-wamindas-blakcedeFollow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comLink to article reflecting on this episode on Medium here -youtube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. It's a very great pleasure to share with you the conversation I co-created with Betsy Reed. Betsy has spent the past 18+ years working as a sustainability expert, running big advocacy campaigns, working for corporates, running her own sustainability consultancy, lecturing, and being invited to write and publish her first book, ‘Communicating Social & Environmental Issues Effectively.' Above all, Betsy is a lifelong social justice activist who wanted to grow up and become a lobbyist (and did). She's spent years honing her skills as a meditation and yoga teacher, as well as embracing and becoming more comfortable in her range of changing identities to give her perspective, empathy and power in herself. Her greatest labour of love to the world right now is her podcast, The Discomfort Practice, which was birthed from the quiet that a 3-month Barcelona covid lockdown created in spring 2020. It's created a space for her to explore and knit together the themes she's been studying, becoming an expert in and teaching for several years, from mindfulness and system change to anti-racism activism and hosting nurturing conversations. As work has started to flow again in 2021, her work has become solely focused on leadership (both self-leadership and more formal Leadership) for a new paradigm, which incorporates diversity & inclusion, holistic sustainability, shifts in power and influence and the pressures of leadership following a pandemic and the unfolding crisis of social inequality and climate change. Betsy's intention is to live a life that inspires others, to do work that inspires others to better lead themselves and others to create big collective change that makes society and the planet a place where all beings can thrive. This conversation is playful, confronting, joyful and (of course) touching on topics that maybe uncomfortable for some, maybe including you.We look forward to hearing from you via our socials is there's anything you would like to share in response to this conversation. Betsy is mainly active on Instagram, and Tim primarily hangs out in LinkedIn so drop us a comment or a message in either of those platforms if you'd like.Key out-takes from this episode;Defining Self- Finding real freedom in not being defined by what I do- Finding yourself doing something, something that fits, that meets you where you are and draws you on- Focus on alignment and you end up where you need to be- Worked so hard at being good in the system I was in, and it was never enough- People don't know how to connect to themselves, they don't know how to speak emotion, they have lost touch with themselves as humans in the workplace- To become truly myself I had to break up with old ways of beingReflections on this moment- What I've been training and developing for the last 20 years is now what the world wants- I'm really excited about where we are- What I got was a chance to be still. It was really squirmy at first, uncomfortable as an ambitious, action-orientated person- What a gift to my creativity quiet wasSystems thinking- I no longer have to explain to people that social & environmental is part of sustainability- In order to build sustainable systems they need to be sustainable for human beings, they need to include sustainability, diversity & inclusion and be cognisant of wellbeing- I'm still entwined in these systems which have created our world- Shareholders don't exist as some separate entity to the planet, everything exists as part of the same whole- There's cognitive dissonance everywhere, as people haven't realised they are part of the systems that are breaking them- Anyone who thinks there's nothing they can do doesn't understand their role in the world- I recognise that I need to change. I recognise that I can help groups to change. I recognise that there is a system, and that I and these groups can change the systemTransformation- I think we are mid-breakdown, and I don't believe that is a bad thing- It's going to get worse and it's going to get worse fast- We have to break down old systems- How do we do things imperfectly whilst still making forward progress- What's going on can't keep going on. We're either going to breakdown or breakthrough.- It's not simple, it's going to be complex, it's going to be messyNew Leaders- We need people who focus on understanding inter-being and interconnectedness- That's where we are, still looking for those leaders to emerge- We've seen a lot of leaders who don't have the answers because they can't think outside the paradigm within which they have been operating- Some of them will lead us into the future and some of them will hold us back- We are birthing a new generation of leaders- The people in power are not the ones to lead us there. We are going to see a big shift in who is leading- Because you have agency you have ownership. That means you have opportunity & obligation.- We got this. You've had your turn. Sorry, not enough. Now we got this.Discomfort & Choice- Discomfort is a force for change. A productive thing. It's not something we embrace or look for, yet it is often the thing that gives birth to the greatest innovations.- Use your agency to make choices that make the world better & work for you- Once you begin to think of yourself as a leader it's going to change your lens on life- People are up for being told they are doing wrong, as long as they are told how you can do things better.Follow Betsy via the links below, and also grab a copy of her book (if you haven't done so already!):https://www.instagram.com/thebetsyreed/https://www.linkedin.com/in/thebetsyreed/https://twitter.com/thebetsyreedhttps://www.betsy-reed.com/Check out Betsy's podcast ‘The Discomfort Practice' wherever you listen to podcasts.Follow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Having lived and worked across 4 different continents, he has experienced first hand the universality of intentions to create a better world, and learnt how to nurture diversity through collaboration and shared values.I really enjoyed this delightful exchange with a leader who keeps complex concepts to a minimum, focuses on what's most important and shows time and time again that providing access to innovation, pathways to activate potential and taking every opportunity to plant seeds that will germinate to grow the future generation of change-making Better World Leaders is not only possible but necessary to sustain the changes we need in our world.Key out-takes from this episode;Nurturing capability- We are building the next generation of change makers- We try to plant seeds deep so they can go on and make change- We plant the seeds, people make the differenceCollective collaboration- I saw people from all over the world working together towards a shared vision to make the world a better place- Focus on Collaboration. Working as a social researcher for decades, you spend endless hours interviewing people and facilitating workshops to understand a broad-spectrum of perspectives of what people want, what they don't want – and most especially what they hope for the future. This has been Rebecca Huntley's journey into addressing one of greatest challenges for better world leaders – Climate Change. As one of Australia's preeminent social researchers, it's an absolute honour to bring this co-created conversation to you. This episode is about climate change. It's about where we in Australia are a nation on this issue, where the majority actually lies on what should be done to address the climate crisis, and where our attention, action and influence should be applied to activate the changes we collectively want.We discuss both of our transitions into taking a participative ‘newbie' role in the climate movement, Rebecca's shift to focus her energy, experience and capability towards climate, with a spotlight on her outstanding book ‘How to talk about climate change in a way that makes a difference'.This conversation is fun, deep, funny, confronting, hopeful and compelling. We hope there will be something here for everyone, not only Australians, wherever you current sit on the broad spectrum of views and positions of the climate crisis. We look forward to hearing from you via our socials is there's anything you would like to share in response to this conversation. Both Rebecca and Tim are active on LinkedIn so drop us a comment or a message there, and Rebecca is very active in Twitter.Key out-takes from this episode;Meaningful work- When we find the work that's really significant, we reflect back and find markers & signifiers of that work through the whole of our lives- Is it a trail of breadcrumbs you've always been following, or are you looking back through a different lens seeing moments you haven't before recognised?- The movement itself is renewable energy- I get genuine moments of joy when I see genuine moments of progress- Know that there is abundant opportunity to do the most meaningful work and that is building everydayFutures- Will my daughter visit the reef like we visit the Coliseum, to see a place that once was thriving and is now a wreck?- For the last 20 years I've been listening to Australian's talk about the kind of futures they want, and helping organisations understand that so they can act- We have a fighting chance to create a liveable world for everyoneChange & Influence- Take a small first step into an area where you have the greatest level of confidence- Think about the area of knowledge, expertise, power, connections that you feel most confident with, start the conversation there.- Quite small things can start a conversation which normalises climate and sends people on a meaningful personal and impactful path to doing things- Do an audit of where you've got influence and confidence and start there- The journey starts with the first small effective step that works for you, and it can lead anywhereAction, Threat & Diversity- The research consistently shows that the majority of Australians want action on climate and that's accelerating- Why me? What do I do? Why does it matter?- Action will overcome anxiety- That is a bell that needs to be rung, and then put down so you can get on with the constructive work that needs to be doneFollow Rebecca via the links below, and also grab a copy of her book (if you haven't done so already!):https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-huntley-81b9013/Twitter @rebeccahuntley2Check out Rebecca's podcast alongside Chris Gambian – COP That!! Stories are change. Stories are us. We change stories and they change us. Claire Marshall's story is one of being, receiving and informing change – and it is one I'm thrilled to be sharing with you in the first episode of our fourth season. This season is all about sustaining change. Once we've done the big leap, made the transformational shift and entered the space of on-going adjustment, the power of story really comes into its own. Here we discuss the role of story, how story told in place can both support and sustain a very particular and beneficial kind of change, how stories can transform us and most importantly of all, create our futures to be those we want, filled with what we know to be most important.Claire is a delight to converse with, a wise and joyful soul who I am deeply honoured to have connected with and so deeply explored the story of story with.We look forward to hearing from you via our socials is there's anything you would like to share in response to this conversation.Key out-takes from this episode; The role of story- A story is incredibly powerful, a story frames how we see the world, it frames what we expect, it frames how we see ourselves and it guides our actions- The story we tell ourselves about the future impacts the decisions we take in the present, and the decisions we take in the present impact what kind of future we shape- Stories have an evolutionary advantage. They allow us to learn from other people without having to have those same experiences.- We have been sold a story that we are a product of our productivity and our owned products- We are always looking through our own story out into the world- When you change the story, the story changes you- Understanding a complex system is vital to our survival on the planet. The best way to communicate the relationships in a system is with a storyPlace-based Change- Stories are about relationships. Stories are about the dynamics between people, and between people & place.Transformation- If we want to transform, if we want to evolve, we have to give up what we were, to become what we will be. That requires trust, support networks and stories.- It's not about the stars, it's about the space in between the stars. That's where the potential is.Creating futures- The future is a story, and it's one of the most important stories that we tell- When people have a new story of the future, they start seeing the seeds of that story everywhere. That's empowering, because you can see where you can take action.Follow Claire and be sure to visit The Museum of Futures via the links below:linkedin.com/in/clairefmarshall/www.iflabs.com.au/www.museumoffutures.com.au/Twitter @which_future and @mof_museumFollow Tim and join the Better World Leaders community via the links below:linkedin.com/in/timcollingslinkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersinstagram.com/timcollingslifedownsouthtimcollings-betterworldleaders.medium.comyoutube @timcollings – click here for channelEpisode Pages for this episode and all previous Better World Leaders conversations available here;4ileadership.com/category/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This is a conversation that in some ways I was not expecting, but in other ways I sense I have long been waiting for. I was spell-bound throughout the dialogue with Anika Molesworth, as she shows through her experience, knowledge and actions how we can all influence change, be courageous and do things differently to address climate change and preserve our food systems now and for the future.Anika is a PhD in Agricultural Science, Founder Director of Farmers for Climate Action, Founder of Climate Wise Agriculture, WWF-Australia Governor and the author of the very brilliant ‘Our Sunburnt Country'.Her journey moving as a child from urban Melbourne to extremely rural Broken Hill, in far Western New South Wales Australia, into a farmers boots and hat as a young woman as well as through a Degree in Applied Sciences followed by a Masters in Sustainable Agriculture and the PhD as above. As knowledgeable as Anika clearly is, she is the furthest thing from academia, very much grounded by the red earth of the place she loves, the ailing of the land she has known since a child and her observations of the human-driven changes to landscape, ecology and community. Her gift is that of a brilliant storyteller, one who – in her own words – shows rather than tells, speaks emotively, and walks the courageous steps of a leader who with every breath strives to create a better, more regenerative, place-based world.Anika and I really looking forward to bringing this conversations to you – we hope you enjoy and find both illumination and inspiration throughout.Key out-takes from this episode;Connect to nature- This begins with a sense of wonderment with our surrounds & leaning closely with the natural world- Connecting closely with the landscape continues to drive everything Anika does- Anika's parents encouraged her to turn over the leaves & the rocks, to study this placePlace-based Change- Anika saw the place that she loves deteriorate before her eyes- One of the main changes we need to make is feeling connected to place- Anika could almost reach down, put her hand on the ground and feel her own hear beating, that's how connected she feels with this place- It's important for people to feel connection to place not only for joy & love, but for when they see it ailing- We have to be better observers and recognise what is not going well in the worldNarrative & Storytelling- Change the narrative, not just doom & gloom, share the vision for the better world"- These are the facts, this is what's happening - but told in a way that punches you in the heart- We are the protagonist, we are at the heart of the story, very much creating the next chapter- We need a different approach, changing the stories we are telling- The time for fear based narrative is passing, the time for illumination & inspiration, talking about what is possible & can be done is hereDevelop Capability- How do we give people the capability to describe their visions and convert them into reality?Leading- Be a leader of your own life, and the sphere of influence around you- You can help influence change for the better, because you too are a leader- What we need is more of the verb. What we need is more action. We need more people leading than following.Influence & Change- We are the most trusted messengers to those we care the most for- Don't underestimate the change we can make within our sphere of influence- The essence of everyone is where the change occurs- Changing behaviours of institutions & businesses, and you will charge the behaviours of the people within them- What would we love to create if we dare to imagine this better world we say we want?Follow Anika, connect to Farms for Climate Action and order a copy of Our Sunburnt Country:https://www.anikamolesworth.com/https://twitter.com/AnikaMolesworthhttps://www.instagram.com/anikamolesworth/https://www.facebook.com/anikamolesworthdrhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/anika-molesworth-phdhttps://www.panmacmillan.com.au/author/anika-molesworth/https://farmersforclimateaction.org.au/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. In this episode we have created a slight shift in the experience, reversing the role Tim plays as host and putting him behind the guest microphone, whilst the conversational space is held by Alice Howard-Vyse.The story shared and examined in this dialogue is that of one of the transformative experiences, or rather a combination of experiences, that have drawn Tim into being and doing different things – he would hope better things. This is a story of learning to tune into what you are called to do, of observing self and the affect of lived experience, of listening to the calls we receive through our lives and the choices we can make once we hear them. Tim's story he does not consider to be his, it is the story of all those who shared in the experiences the story draws upon – ecological traumas of flood and fire – and as Alice reflects, of a collective story of systemic shifts which are impacting increasingly across our planet and our shared systems of life, community, work and economic contribution.Tim is extremely grateful to and honoured by Alice's acceptance of his invitation to host her first podcast by holding space for this story to be told, and for her own interpretation and reflection on the experiences Tim shares. Alice had not heard Tim's story before the recording of this conversation, her responses are raw, meaningful, impactful and deeply insightful and inspiring.Alice is a champion of progressive systemic change. Her business, Humanise This, is a strategic innovation consultancy that supports sustainability leaders and their teams to address complex challenges, navigate uncertainty and lead with the best of their humanity. Alice's integrative practice draws from Human-centred Design, Systems Thinking & Transformative Change. Her work - as a strategist, coach and facilitator - is dedicated to building adaptive capacity of communities and enabling initiatives that catalyse transition to a low-carbon future. She is an Active Hope facilitator and one of the founding convenors of RegenSydney.Alice and I really looking forward to sharing this conversation with you – we hope you receive an invitation for deep reflection, listening and tuning into yourself, and to explore the calls from your own experience and the choices you have to act having heard them.Key out-takes from this episode;Choice- I watched people die, and I did nothing. I did not hear this call, and I chose not to act. I went back to my life and I carried on.- How do we choose to act, appreciate the longer narrative and choose when to act based on capacity- What motivates us to act and change our behaviour?Collective narrative- There is a collective task to be done. This is done individually, cojoined with many others- This is a bigger story to be pulled into, a collective story of systemic shifts- When we hear each others stories we are sharing in each others emotions, which is the connecting force between us- We are so often busy in the doing that we drop the stories that we are part ofTransformative narrative- As storytellers we can engage ourselves to make change from ourselves first, then transmit and enable transformational change in others- Transformative experiences are not about the event itself, but about the story we form around it, and that we live through it- The role of storytelling can be allied to any of the arenas of change that are needed to embrace our better worldAwareness- How do you become attuned to the work you feel you need to do?- Showing up in a new direction, in a different way, being more explicit about what is within- Try to tune into the affect you are having on others, what that is and what that says about what you're doing- How many of us can see the fullness of ourselves?Influence & Change- Add quotes hereAdditional links to resources mentioned in this episodeAustralian Government site detailing scale and impact of the 2019/20 bushfiresRebecca Huntley's book – How to talk about Climate Change in a Way that makes a differenceDr Miriam Rose's site for more about Deep Listening - DadirriTim's article – What if your Monday morning anxiety could mean this, on MediumBWL Episode page for the conversation with Laura Hamilton-O'HaraSite for Active HopeTim's Medium article 'First the Flood, now the Fire' written days after the second event described in the storyFollow Tim and Alice as well as the Better World Leaders community group via the links belowTim Linkedin – www.linkedin.com/in/timcollings/Alice Linkedin – www.linkedin.com/in/alicehvTim's company – 4iLeadership – www.4ileadership.comAlice's company – Humanize This - www.humanisethis.com.auBetter World Leaders Group - www.linkedin.com/company/better-world-leaders/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. We reflect on her journey to get here, and hope that sharing Karren's story will inspire a whole range of entrepreneurs, leaders, women, girls and older generations to continue to strive to bring their greatest ideas to life. For Karren, leadership is a great privilege and as leaders it is our responsibility to support all our people to feel cared for and respected. She has seen time and time again, when we get that right, staff take great care and responsibility for the people in their care - your clients, providing them with the best experiences and services that surpass expectations. Her company, Conductor, is leading the way connecting people and business performance in organisations so leaders can see for themselves what they can and should be doing to support the people in their care, and seeing how it improves their bottom-line performance.Key out-takes from this episodeInclusion:Inequality removes people from the opportunity to explore their true potentialAsk yourself whether you feel included, a sense of belonging, access to equal opportunities, fair treatment, the ability to make decisions and to disagree with those whose opinions are dominantTo be innovative, we can't just hear from leaders, we need to hear from everyoneChanging demands on leaders:Leaders are trying to navigate a whole new way of leading, without the tools to do soLeaders need to understand the issues, know how to come at the issue themselves, and what will the impact be on the organisation as they doLeaders need to be aware that people are reading the unintended consequences from intentions much more easily these daysMany more people are willing to put their hand up and say ‘that's not right'Trust & Teams:The key to teams is trust and communicationYou cannot retain good staff if employees don't trust the organisation, don't trust their colleagues and don't trust their managerThe health of your organisation is linked to the health of your teamsYou cannot have a healthy organisation if you do not have healthy teamsYou can't influence anyone if they don't trust youPurpose and valuesDon't give up on those niggling things that you have an ache to changeIn their heart most leaders have the same ache as most of us, which is to make a difference to others, yet they are often trapped between the demands of business performance and supporting their staff. It is not a zero sum game...we need to support leaders with the key knowledge they need now, to achieve both business performance and the growth and success of their staff.Ask yourself whether the vision and values of your organisation are permeating all the way down through the organisation?Leading ChangeIn any situation where you are courageous enough to really look at yourself lies great opportunityYou cannot change what you cannot seeIt takes preparedness to create an organisation that can look at itself and learnIf you're not comfortable to do this, you have an organisation which is not psychologically safe and you are losing revenue.Karren and I look forward to sharing this chapter of the Better World Leaders journey with you. Always endeavouring to curate a diverse range of leaders to seek learning and insights from, we co-create conversations with leaders who have been striving to make the world better for decades, and leaders who have figuring out exactly what their first striving step will be. Paul Gleeson is firmly in the former camp, an experienced leader who made a critical turn in his career many years ago driven by an intrinsic initiative to orientate himself towards making a difference and creating a better world.Paul is the Group Director, Sustainability and Managing Director Energy, Resources and Water-ANZ for Aurecon, a global Engineering Consultancy and Advisory firm. He describes his role as helping people and organisations to transition and transform in response to sustainability and climate change, getting them to move with the change rather than resist it. As a leader he connects people with purpose, giving them the courage to get involved and be part of the change they want to seePaul works with government and industry leaders to help them navigate away from the way they operate today industrially, to a net zero model. He knows the challenges and opportunities for future industries and business models, assets and workforces having navigated the energy transition for governments and industry for more than a decade.Paul has over 25 years' experience working across all aspects of the energy sector including some of the most significant projects in the Australian energy market, including the TransGrid acquisition, Australia's largest wind and solar farms and the Government of South Australia's Clean Energy Transition. As part of advising both the public and private sector on the development of strategies, targets, policies and projects to combat the negative impacts of climate change he led a team to deliver Aurecon's Hydrogen for Transport report that informed Australia's National Hydrogen Roadmap. In his roles at Aurecon as Group Director, Sustainability and Managing Director, Energy, Resources and Water he continues to evolve Aurecon's sustainability and climate change expertise to address client challenges including the transition to net zero and manage Aurecon's corporate sustainability transparency with Aurecon's board.Paul is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also a member of The University of Queensland's Master of Sustainable Energy Advisory Board and continues to work closely in partnership with The University of Queensland to lead change for students and business. In this conversation we explore Paul's journey to take a leading role and inspire many others to combine technical, leadership and purposeful abilities to set in motion numerous programs and develop projects can positively impact our future better world. We discuss the role of purpose and passion in Paul's work and leadership, his approach to leading teams through transformations and guiding transformative projects, as well as how to nurture potential and self-expression, and the changing landscape of the sectors Paul's expertise is sought out by.Key out-takes from this episodeConversations are changing:- There are now a lot less conversations about should we, and a lot more about how we do the changes that need to occur- These conversations often get away from simple binary discussions and engage in more complex, nuanced dialogueLeading people through transformations:- The first thing to do is get crystal clear about the why- Trying to take a group of people somewhere is as exciting as bringing in a new piece of Tech- You have to find the first followers- It's not enough just to have the first followers, figure out the right investment in the core cohort- Doing a great job is not enough. You've got to be able to tell the story link to why- Trying to take a group of people somewhere is as exciting as bringing in a new piece of TechLeading with purpose:- Understanding, being open to and more overt in talking about purpose, meaning and passion- If I show people that it's ok and not weird to get excited about being passionate can unlock more in everyone- The crucial thing with passion & purpose is that it is real- Be true to what matters to you & what you want to achieve & that applies at any age- There are rewards from the virtuous circle of receiving more meaning & purpose from working with meaning & purpose- When there's a really good alignment of meaning & purpose with your role, those are the really great phases of your career with the greatest reward- Alignment of passion & purpose unlocks super-performance- We need better leadership to get better outcomes- There's a sense of calmness that comes from making a differenceWholeness and developing potential:- Give people permission to unleash all that they are- So many people I've led are smarter than me, but they hadn't had permission to unleash & bring everything they can bring- There's a difference between giving an opportunity & giving space to express themselvesPaul and I look forward to sharing this chapter of the Better World Leaders journey with you. One of the greatest honours and genuine pleasures about hosting a podcast like BWL is when friends and inspiring folk in your network recommend incredible guests, who you would otherwise have had no connection to but from the very first moment you enter into dialogue with them, the alignment on the most fundamental cellular level is clear. My interactions with Laura Hamilton O'Hara is a perfect example of this. The few conversations that led up to this broadcast one were an potent blend of inspiration, fund, respectful awe and deep intrigue, and this one maxes out all of those factorsIn this conversation we explore the journey to uncover the many ways you can make a contribution to creating a better world, from ecology and conversation to design and construction. We're so excited to have crossed the threshold of halfway in our third season of Better World Leaders, and to continue to explore the many ways leaders are inspiring transformation towards creating our better world. The journey continues in this conversation with Sandra D'Souza, as we blend playfulness with total seriousness to explore a vital topic in progressing towards a more inclusive and equal world – how to nurture diverse teams and cultures. We explore Sandra's journey of discovering and leaning into purpose, her own transformation from Accountant to Tech Founder CEO, via Digital Marketing, and the many ways she is both actively nurturing and inspiring positive change in the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity space via her Diversity marketplace platform, Ellect. We're really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and sharing the Better World Leaders journey with you – both Sandra and Tim would love to hear your comments and reviews or directly from you via any of the social links below.Key out-takes from this episode;- How to take people on the journey to change the world- How to demonstrate that this transition to create a better world will benefit them and the whole world- That one of the first steps which is often missed is really listening for any fears that people may have about any transformation, but especially one that confronts real change.- We explore the need to be willing to sit in discomfort of shared space with people of opposing views, opinions & experiences- We discuss that listening is about being inclusive- How to hold space so that the realisation comes that not everyone has access to the same opportunities, and that as this is revealed the next movement towards inclusion is one of curiosity- That one example of diversity that truly affects the bottom line, productivity & agility is having a diverse range of suppliers- That there is often a lack of awareness of how other groups are feeling- The vital role of leaders in nurturing the conditions for inclusion and fostering the structures to enable equity through diversity- The reality that is true diversity is not led from the top, you have to force the change in other waysHere's the link to the Supplier Diversity Awards Sandra mentioned – submissions open until the end of August 2021 – click hereFollow Ellect or reach out to Sandra via social platforms and details below:Website - www.ellect.biz/Sandra emailInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ellect.biz/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sandra.dsouza.ellect.biz/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/EllectBizLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/sandradsouzaaustWe've also launched a Better World Leaders LinkedIn group, follow to connect and interact more deeply with the BWL community - www.linkedin.com/company/better-world-leadersAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Welcome to the halfway review of the third season of Better World Leaders. Our season focus in 'Doing Better Things - stories of transformation towards leading to create our better world'.In the 5 fantastic, inspiring and insightful conversations we've co-created in this season so far, we've received many gifts of wisdom born from experience, research and practice. In considering each of these conversations, 3 themes have surfaced as being consistent across all of these dialogues. These are often spoken to directly, explicitly and actively as well more subtly, but they are clear to see as providing a guiding framework around how we can both transform ourselves, as well as enable others to do the same. These 3 themes are focusing on contributing to a greater good, connecting with yourself, your calling and others who share your values, and engaging with discomfort as a very necessary mode to nest in to navigate transformational moments. In this episode, BWL host Tim Collings highlights the salient moments from the conversations with Brendan Lo, Ronan Mac Domhaill, Chris Andrew, Tigrilla Gardinia and Melina Lipkiewicz. As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This conversation is about many things. It's about life, loss, leading and above all else, learning to lead from purpose.Melina is, I'm honoured to say, a colleague, a friend, a constant collaborator and a real inspiration to me. This conversation builds on many discussions that she and I have had over the years, and yet in this most public of forums, she shares things for the first time and I have deepened my understanding of what drives this incredible woman who I have known and worked closely with for years. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to share this conversation with you.The key elements of this conversation are;Finding your purpose is a lifelong journeyIf you have an internal rumbling, it's time to reflect & prepare for changeLook around at the world today & get curious, you'll find people who need more from youIf you want to do more, you don't have to go elsewhere to do it. This conversation is as fascinating as it is free flowing - a diverse dialogue with Technologist turned Plant Intelligence Practitioner, Tigrilla Gardenia.Tigrilla's journey flows from the conventional definition of success through shifting patterns of turning into spirituality and rising to purpose by aligning her passions, strengths and connective capability to understand how human growth and evolution is linked to our partnership with the intelligence of another kingdom - that of plants.Tigrilla grew up in a Cuban family in the US, progressing through university to a successful career in Hi-Tech, including a decade in Software Development with Microsoft and RealNetworks. She departed the preordained path and via a magnificent series of leaps of faith, landed with a spiritual community in Italy, announcing she would say for a few months. A decade and a Masters in Plant Intelligence later, we find her exploring the many ways we as humans and leaders can make the world better by overcoming plant ‘blindness', understanding better our role as part of nature and learning how to model the plant kingdom's tendencies of nurturing sustainable ecosystems as examples for leadership, organisational design and overall embracing a more productive way of being. The key elements of this conversation are;Ask how can you build positive mental health?Explore what you can gain when you discover communityConsider how we bring our the best of human beings and awaken our true potential by recognising that we are part of the environmentWhen we do the right thing by ourselves, we do the right thing by everything, when we remember that we are natureWe have to look at our team members, our industries and our systems as what they truly areRecognise that the more efficient response to overcome fear is empathyHow to find the flow between curiosity and fearWhen you quiet the mind and open the senses, you allow collaboration to happenExpanding the senses allows leaders to work with people in new waysHow to understand and explore ‘mutualisms', the mutually beneficial relationships that exist throughout natureHow you as a leader can look at the overall system you exist within and decide which types of relationships you need to createThat we need to create effective feedback loops to understand when it's time to changeFor growth, start by focusing on the individual, looking at awakening and reconnectionWe can look to models yes, but only after we have looked at values and biasesConsider what are your goals, what are your values, and connect these to the overall system. This is a long yarn towards a specific destination – a place of shared meaning and common ground in devotion of a specific way of being…caring for Country. The pathway we talk upon to arrive at our destination is the roles of stories. How we are as storytellers discloses much about how we view the world, what we consider our role to be and how we intend our actions to impact on those who receive them.Chris Andrew is a storyteller who grew up in the most Western of environments, as a chemical engineer and investment banker, and who has transitioned into playing a role in one of the oldest – working with Aboriginal communities whose storytelling lineage refers back at least 60,000 years. This early part of this discussion tracks Chris's journey and development as he progressed through these stages. At around the 33 minute mark we shift to explore in-depth his current context working as a leader in an Aboriginal Social Enterprise. From here on in we go in depth into the contrast between the Western approach to questioning and ‘self-serving' pursuit of answers, to examine the crucial role of storytelling to not only convey knowledge, but to share context, perspectives and define culture.Key out-takes from this episode;- How do you relate and use your skills to build a better world?- We need to broaden the audience by broadening the conversation and expanding the language- Chris's take on finding common ground is to seek shared stories- Telling a story gives richness to the systems we all operate in- Accept that not everyone is going to change, not everyone is going to listen or share, or work towards common ground. But everyone can in their own way and in their own time come to that point through different pathways.- Chris' view on the land of Australia, of Country, being our ‘laziest asset' (using Investment banking language to broaden the conversation). How can we work collaboratively and inclusively to develop this – once we are invited in to do so having treated this asset with respect.- That in Chris' view there really is one solution. To care for Country.- As we do so, we embed more choice. As we embed more choice, we embed greater value. You can reach out to Chris via his LinkedIn profile here - https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-andrew-75196a18/You can find out more about Black Duck Foods here - https://blackduckfoods.org/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This is a deep, informative and inspiring conversation flowing through the peaks and troughs of life and career experience of Tech Entrepreneur Ronan Mac DomhnaillRonan is full of Irish charm, brutal vulnerability and all of the things we see the most from Better World Leaders - the healthy relationship with fear, hearing the call to purpose and taking an action orientated path to overcome adversity and create great impact.Ronan's journey to join us on Better World Leaders has taken many twists and turns, from working as a Software Developer to a Neuroscience Coach, from corporate success to entrepreneurial crisis and revival. Throughout all he remains humble, human and focused on serving others. The key essence of this conversation flows around the notion of success, what a ‘moth to the flame' like draw the common projection of success can be, the impact that can have on our individual mental health, our relationships and our communities. Ronan's latest venture - CRED - seeks to combine technology and neuroscience to address all of these areas, ultimately leading to a provocation that in order to create sustainable change and create a better world for all, we must redefine what it means to be successful.I really benefited from creating this conversation with Ronan, it's been an immediately impactful learning experience for me, and I hope you'll receive a similar reflection yourself.Key out-takes from this episode;Let's take a moment to reflect and in doing so, get off the preordained treadmill, slow down and ask ourselves “What does a life well-lived look like?”Consider being on your death-bed, watching your life's highlights reel. Think about what you'd like to see on that reel. When it comes to developing ideas and products, we're all in love with our own solutions. What Ronan has found is that when he leads with purpose, values & vision, the right people are drawn towards what he's trying to achieve.Remember to remember to look after yourself.Ronan is playing the long game. He's in the business of creating sustainable change. And that kind of change takes time.Ronan defines success as enabling long-term change with real impact.A lot of people like the idea of change, but wait for everyone else to change first.Ask yourself, what do you need to give up now for long-term gain?Action with reflection creates change. You can get in touch with Ronan via any of the links below;Website: https://cred.globalEmail: ronan@cred.globalLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ronanmacd/Cred podcast: https://cred.global/podcast-2/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for mastering, final production, composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper, Pat and the team at RadioHub studios for audio editing, technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. I do highly recommend the whole conversation to fully appreciate Dr. Tom's background and perspective.Key out-takes from this episode;- We are often taught “this is the way it has to be”. Learn to question “is it?”- You have to name your part, what role you are playing in a system or context.- Impatience is the most selfish act one can perform- Humility is simply an admission that you're human. That you don't know everything, you can provide grace to somebody else and that you don't have to be the centre of attention.- A key tenant of servant leadership is altruism. Altruism is not simply about being and doing good but comes from evolutionary psychology of a member of the group being able to mediate anger or aggression to bring the group together to work towards a common goal.- That the greatest leaders are able to inspire people to work towards a shared vision is commonly accepted. What must be appreciated is that the only way we can inspire somebody is to have developed trust, have mutual respect for each other, as well as understand what mutual dependencies you have for each other, our unspoken contract.(Specific quote for QT The only way to inspire somebody is by building trust with mutual respect and appreciation for mutual dependence)- Do you truly understand why you want to be a leader?- What is successful leadership to you? Involves having a relationship with people. If you do reach successful leadership without having a relationship with people, it's likely to be short-lived.- To develop yourself and others as leaders, seek out learning that's simple, practical and immediate in application.- What we want to understand and help others to understand is what makes a better world leader- How can you build leaders that can deal with today, whilst moving towards their vision for the future?- Everything we do is built on purpose. That's the foundation stone.- When onboarding teams virtually, focus on aligning thinking, vision, values & purpose, and building a sense of trust quickly.- Much more about leadership is teachable than innate. If you have the vision, purpose and drive to become a great leader, you can learn how to do so.- Leading an organisation that is purpose-driven, values-led, resilient and adaptable is now a minimum requirement for success both now and moving into the future.- Consider how do you want to give back to the world as a leader? Not necessarily the world at large, but also your own world, your family or your community.(Specific quote – How do you want to give back to the world? How are you going to make a difference?Resources mentioned in this conversation; How will you measure your life? by Clayton M. This conversation is as much a journey, as it is a movement towards a destination. The destination is an entrepreneurial endeavour that provides proof that no matter what the business model, how simple or complex, unique or commoditised, that engraining purpose firmly at the core of our organisation will bring greater outcomes. And since this one is a for profit business – the proof is that profit follows purpose. This is a fascinating discussion with entrepreneur Kevin Tan, who shares his journey from a promising career in global consulting firm Accenture, on a path of discovering purpose through field work with World Vision, to co-founding a ‘for purpose' organisation that delivers improved outcomes for both staff and customers in the contract cleaning industry.Kevin's perspectives about life, service, purpose and creating meaningful work and for purpose profit are as inspirational and they are informative. If you are seeking your purpose, and how to apply it in your work, this conversation may well be for you.Key out-takes from this episode;- Kevin found that bringing a sense of devotion and purpose to work has led to much greater staff engagement. Instead of talking about their work experience, staff now talk about their purpose experience.- Work should go beyond producing a great service, it can be about having an even greater impact in the world.- Living their purpose as a company by showing their customers that they really cared about them led to a huge increase in retention (up to 97%), in an industry that typically has very low retention rates across contracts.- When you think about purpose as a concept is such a big idea, but when you break it down to an individual level, it's really about living the attributes of someone you'd like to hang out with.- Key themes of Kevin's approach to leadership – be generous, be faithful and do what you'll say you'll do. Do this, and you'll attract good business, good contracts and good staff.- The collective consciousness of the business community is increasing around the benefits of following purposeful models of operating.- If we can get just 6% of small and medium sized businesses to embrace a new way of operating, we'll see a tipping point in cultural change for the good.- You don't need to be CEO to make the brave calls and follow your moral compass- Taking personal responsibility is vital and key to change the way we run our businesses. Everyone can take this personal responsibility for how they lead.-Get in touch with Kevin via any of these points of contact;Kevin's Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevin-tan-241518b/Kevin's business: www.cleanasyougo.com.auAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Every once in a while you come across a corporate leader who really makes you sit up and pay attention. Kirstin Hunter was one such example for me. And not because of a prestigious appointment, or a meteoric rise to prominence or a stellar investor presentation. I paid attention because of bravery, action in alignment with purpose and living ones' values.I became aware of the organisation she is Managing Director of, Future Super, shortly before Kirstin came into view. Future Super stands out as a prominent advocate, if not activist, in for-purpose, impact-driven investment. Kirstin stands out for not just walking the walk, but shouting the talk of what they do and why they do what they do.Don't get me wrong, typically you would find me using very different language to describe my emotions around the financial services and funds management industry, but this woman, this leader and this organisation are worthy of a different set of adjectives and verbs. As such, Kirstin's mantra is most appropriate – deeds over words.Kirstin's journey from lawyer to global management consultant to leading a purpose-led funds management company runs in defiance of the received wisdom of corporate careers, as does the approve the organisation she leads takes to investment – leading to a clean sweep of the highest performing funds in recent Australian industry results. This is a powerful conversation that proves two significant points – that everyone who has any retirement savings of any kind can apply them to do good and create the world we want to see. And that this sector, one that rightly attracts more ire and criticism than praise, has an enormous opportunity to follow Kirstin and Future Super's lead and become a major force for good. The Australian retirement investment industry is the 4th largest investment pool in the world, currently valued at over $2.7trillion AUD. Imagine the projects that could fund. The full transition to renewable energy for a start, which would require just 7.7% of total funds invested by the Australian superannuation industry.Key out-takes from this episode;- Financial services is not an industry that you'd typically associate with strongly purpose-orientated people – but perhaps it will be soon!- Future Super's performance proves that it is not only possible, but beneficial to think about both purpose and profit in investing.- This success is not just about the positive return to members from the funds managed, it's about inspiring positive change in the industry to compound a greater force for good.- Let's put that into context. Research cited by Kirstin indicates that to fully transition Australia to renewable energy would require the investment of just 7.7% of the funds currently invested by Australian retirement funds.- The received wisdom in the investment industry in Australia is that you can't generate consistent member returns without investing in fossil fuels. Well, it turns out you can.- In fact, during times of volatility, ethical funds have significantly out-performed conventionally invested funds.- Being purpose orientated cannot just be marketing spin, not just the words on the wall, it must be reflected in all your interactions with all of your stakeholders.- One of Future Super's philosophies is that they invest by doing.- However, let's not scare anyone off here. You don't have to change the way you work to lead with purpose. All of us have the opportunity to bring purpose into our daily lives.- Anyone can ask a question of their organisation around purpose, and there's a lot of power in that. Ask what it would mean if your organisation really meant what they say they mean. Ask who is going to judge us against what we say around purpose.- Similarly with engagement. Engagement is meaningless if you don't actually engage.- Both of these elements come down to a question of bravery. Initially, are you brave enough to reimagine the world you want to see? Then, make all decisions based on progress towards the world we want to see.- We can sit and blame the system. Or we can change the system. The system is nothing but the collection of all of our outcomes.- Deeds not words. Show your purpose through your actions.- Begin by asking what you control, and then changing what you can control to put you on the path towards the world you want to see.- All of can act with more foresight to make sure the decisions we make today have a positive impact on the world we want to inherit tomorrow.Additional resources mentioned today…UTS report on 7.7% of Australian's Super can enable the transition to clean energy - https://www.uts.edu.au/research-and-teaching/our-research/institute-sustainable-futures/our-research/energy-and-climate/supercharging-clean-energyGet in touch with Kirstin via any of these points of contact; The Future Super website - https://www.futuresuper.com.au/Kirstin's LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/kirstinhunter/As always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. We've have been fortunately to have several deeply moving conversations with Brandon about the role of leaders over the years, and I'm very glad to have been able to create another one here to share with you all.Brandon was born and raised in Apartheid South Africa, and we begin our conversation recounting salient moments of his upbringing which framed his views of the world, viscerally confronting inequality of opportunity, access to resources and education that need not always constrain the realisation of human potential. From these early beginnings, he has devoted himself to the development of human potential and connection. His own leadership journey has taken him through tenures in Not-for-Profit, as a Youth Councillor for the City of Cape Town, and as the Australian Chair for a Global Youth Organisation. He now practices as a psycho-therapist, leadership facilitator and educator – including as a lecturer in Adaptive Leadership. He works with leaders to face the complex challenges they encounter to which there are no set-out, straightforward solutions. As such, we - as humans - are called on to adapt and adjust; to reconfigure our values, loyalties, perceptions and ways of doing things. This requires us to relate and interact with each other in new ways. For Brandon, this is part of leadership. He works with people to develop their relational leadership capacities so that we can meet each other and work with each other in new ways.Key out-takes from this episode;- Seeking to develop human potential and connection are the bedrock of the kind of leadership we need today- So much of the world is crying out for a new kind of leadership- This change needs to happen rapidly and radically- That in the world of Adaptive Leadership, leadership is not a noun, it is a verb. It is something we do, and as such is available to us all.- In Adaptive Leadership we do not refer to leaders, only leadership- Adaptive Leadership is a change management process. We must ask ourselves what is going to need to occur to cause us to emerge in a different form to the one we entered in.- We can get seduced by authority in so many different ways.- Pay attention to the authority relationships in your lifeResources mentioned in this episodeRead – Leadership on the Line, by Marty Linsky and Ronald HeifetzGet in touch with Brandon via any of these points of contact; My website - www.brandonsrot.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/brandonsrot/Feel free to call or email and Brandon would love to chat, perhaps even have a virtual coffeeAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. This is one of the fastest moving, punchiest and broadest conversations we've had onBetter World Leaders thus far, one in which we cover a lot of ground and an array of topics, including acting to align passion with purpose, the role of inquiry in leadership – that leaders ask and listen first and then act, without fear of failure. The later point they do because they accept that failure is a step along the road to learning and growth.A little about Genna...born and raised in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia, she is 1 of 4 daughters and has by her own words been extremely privileged her entire life. Struggling academically in High School she wanted to drop out, however her parents encouraged her to stay until she Graduated High School. The final two years were the best years of her life as she took on various leadership roles. She has now completed two university degrees, Bachelor of Nursing and a Bachelor of Arts in International Aid and Development and Sustainable Development.Inspired by World Vision adverts to confront her privilege and consider how she could make a greater contribution, she approached major charities and NGOs when graduating high school but found little interest in her capability. This frustrated her that her passion and purpose were so readily rebutted, so she shifted into action, travelling to Africa and learning first-hand how to directly interact with, learn from, and offer assistance to communities in need.In the years ahead she founded her own charity – Gennarosity Abroad – which transforms the lives of women and children in Kenya operating a Kindergarten & women's Training Centre and supporting an orphanage and maternity clinic, as well as educating youth in Australia of global injustices (e.g. taken a group of 10 students to Kenya in 2018) The core message is one of inspiring others that as one person, they have the ability to change the lives of others.Key out-takes from this episode;- Instead of letting people dictate how you live your life, take control and have impact on the ground.- Not to tell communities what they need, ask them to inform you of what their problems are, and develop solutions together.- That one of the biggest problems of leadership roles is power, and the inherent danger of having too much power.- Humility, curiosity and respect can balance power.- That we over-emphasis agreement as a requirement to cooperate. We don't need to agree 100% to work together towards a shared vision or outcome.- That failure is something we need to embrace.- Leadership is about doing. Fear of failure is the reason many people don't do.- Education is not just about grades. That much of what good leaders need is not what is graded in our current education system.- That in this sense we may we setting kids up to fail by only focusing on the grade outcome and not the skills acquired along the way.Get in touch with Genna via any of these points of contact; The website Gennarosity Abroad (www.gennarosityabroad.org)email Genna at genna@gennarosityabroad.orgor call (yes, call!) on +61400224429. Of the conversations we've had so far on Better World Leaders, this is the one that most fills me with hope. Hope that there is another way for us to exist, grow, succeed and live virtuously in a way that leads to prosperity, vitality and opportunity for far more of the world. And vitally, that we do all of this in a way that benefits our world, rather than compromises it.This is the conversation with Leen Gorissen about natural intelligence. That by studying natural systems design, natural modes of sharing and distributing resources we as leaders can learn another way to thrive. By understanding what to some is intuitive, but of which all can be informed, how nature teaches us to connect, collaborate and operate collectively.Leen is the Author of ‘Natural Intelligence', as fixating and brilliant a read as it is a practical manual for any organisation or leader seeing to engage with more intuitive, evolutionary and biologically orientated ways of leading. This is my favourite book of the year, but don't just take it from me - here is what the former EU Commissioner of the Environment, Janez Potocnik, said about the book on NI:"The circular bio-based economy is the oldest concept on the earth. Nothing is lost and everything has a purpose. It makes sense to embrace it and behave accordingly. In essence there is only one question we have to answer: Do we agree that we humans are part of the nature too? Natural Intelligence provides a very convincing, clear and un-disputable answer."As this conversation flows through a number of sections, I'm adding a couple of suggested short-cuts for those who are interested in this subject but may wish to sample some of the recommendations before listening to the entire conversation. You may wish to skip ahead to the allocated time marks if these topics are of interest to you, see below;Key out-takes from this episode;- Bottom up movements help actually realise systemic change- The land can be our teacher, as it was for Leen- Are our organisations becoming monoculture of thought? If so, be aware that monocultures of crop and monocultures of thought are very vulnerable when it comes to disruption and change (Tune in from 21min39)- Diversity keeps the door open to new innovations, and is the door of opportunity for new solutions (Tune in from 23min40)- Can we ‘re-nature' human nature, to move beyond our current focus on industrial logic?- How can we re-arrange our businesses to leave the world better off as we succeed in doing our work?- Organisations need to invest in the health of others to ensure the health of their own. Example of VISA.- If we can understand biology we can unlock the hidden potential of systems and organisations.- Leaders must begin this process by waking themselves up. Our conversation in this episode with sustainability expert Simon Carter, the MD of Morphosis and chair of the Sustainable Digitalisation Project (SDP).Simon originally heralds from New Zealand, and as the son of an oceanographer was introduced early on to the appreciation of complex systems in nature and our interaction with and impact on them. His professional journey took him into a focus on the built environment as an architect, and these interests combined with a specialism in sustainability in both buildings and property markets. More recently he has developed expertise in ‘sustainable digitisation', an endeavour to address to rampant momentum to deploy digital technology to buildings and cities; setting an agenda to ensure it is done responsibly, ethically and sustainably.Simon is leading an industry, government and academia collaboration of sustainability, digital technology and social change leaders, the Sustainable Digitalisation Project, to establish this in Australia. The main pillars of this conversation are the influence and impact on our lives at every level of digital platforms and the shift towards digitising so many of our environments, interactions and endeavours. The critical and often decisive role of trust in enabling the effective deployment and use of these platforms, and how risk issues such as privacy, access to data and 3rd party use of data are compounding the further along this journey we go. How do leaders engage with this topic? What are the main mechanisms for managing risk in the context of digitisation and how can leaders make decisions and take action to ensure their organisation is engaging with their digitisation processes responsibly, ethically and sustainably. To answer these questions, listen on!Key out-takes from this episode;- Humankind is crossing a threshold into a highly digitised future.- This is a step-change in the evolution of our species that needs to be stewarded very carefully.- Digitisation offers tremendous benefits, many of which we are aware of but also presents severe risks and significant, complex and novel challenges.- One of the problems we face is a technology-driven mindset, with an expectation that any problem can be solved by technology - that any problem can be algorithmically solved.- Accept that trust is the oil that lubricates the digitised world. Consider what you are doing as a leader, and what your organisation is doing to measure and earn trust.- Organisations, cities and governments that focus on trust will out-compete over time.- Leaders & organisations must question their relationship to technology and put technology in its place as a tool.- This practice must occur both top-down and bottom-up, being led and delivered by leaders at all levels of organisations.Get in touch with Simon via any of these points of contact;LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/simoncarterprofile/Morphosis - http://www.morphosis.com.au/connectAdditional resources mentioned in our conversation.- The Sustainable Digitalisation Project (SDP) - www.sdp.digital- Centre for Responsible Technology www.centreforresponsibletechnology.org.au- Human Rights and Technology, Human Rights Commission https://tech.humanrights.gov.au- Morphosis publication, Crossing the Threshold – a primer for sustainable digitalisation real estate and cities, click here- World Economic Forum discussion between Klaus Swabb & Mark Benihoff on Trust in the 4th Industrial Revolution click hereAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Welcome to Episode 15 of Better World Leaders, our wonderful exploration of the great potential of human creativity to overcome significant obstacles, harness intuition and follow purpose to make a better world for all. In this fascinating conversation we are joined by Andrew Hayim de Vries, founder and inventor of the Subpod composting system.Andrew is an ecologically focused Australian artist and designer, with a host of professional works spanning more than 35 years. He is a creator, an inventor, and a deeply resilient and persistent figure. He is driven by a passion for recycling and up-cycling, composting and vermiculture. The health of the environment calls for the need for re-education and hands-on participation, in which he plays his part.Andrew founded Compost Central Byron Bay as an education, design and development facility to cultivate successful composting. There equip people with the knowledge and confidence to convert organic waste into healthy soil or food production.Over the past years Andrew has been perfecting the ‘Subpod' in-ground composting system, which now has a patent pending and is a run-away success following it's kickstarter launch. When installed, the module (whether in family home, schools, cafes, prisons, refugee and displacement centers, mining towns and other businesses) takes organic kitchen waste and converts it into healthy soil and the means to feed organics food to rural and urban populated communities.Key messages from this episode;- That we need to allow more room for latitude in personal development and career paths, and this latitude will lead to the creation of pathways for discovery, creativity and invention.- If you want to make things better, focus on the weakest link in any system.- Consider what you can do to build, create and share by finding those who feel the same way you do about the world- If you want to make the world better, start with the internal discovery of purpose- Ask yourself, can you get to a point of knowing what you know, and profoundly acknowledging what you don't know?- If you can do this, along with your team – this is the genesis of high performance teams, when everyone owns what they know and what they don't.Get in touch with Andrew via any of these points of contact;https://www.linkedin.com/in/hayimdevries/https://www.hayimdevries.com/contactAdditional resources mentioned in our conversation.- Andrew's projects https://www.hayimdevries.com/Projects- Subpod's main siteFollow Subpod and Compost Central on Instagram here - https://www.instagram.com/thesubpod/?hl=enAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. In this episode of Better World Leaders we talk with renown Human Performance Researcher Dr Adam Fraser. This is a vital conversation for leaders at all levels to tune into, covering the true drivers of leadership performance during times of heightened struggle and stress.Dr Adam Fraser is a peak performance researcher who helps organisations and individuals push beyond their potential. What is unique about his research is that it focuses on how do people go beyond their potential without the collateral damage that normally comes with elite performance.Dr Adam is sought out by organisational leaders across the world in corporations, governments and education bodies for the combination of his devotion to research originated methodologies and his passionate and highly evocative delivery of practical and actionable approaches to improve behaviour and leadership outcomes.Dr Adam is a successful author of 4 books, in-demand speaker typically delivering over 100 keynotes a year, leader of his own consulting business and collaborator with numerous universities across the world on novel research programs. In this conversation we delve deep into leadership performance in our very current time – how leaders are performing during CoVid, how leaders have evolved and continue to show high levels of resilience and adaptability as we all learn how to work and lead in the pandemic. However, there is much work to do several key areas of leadership performance. Firstly self-care and recovery to avoid burnout. And most importantly, in the area of engaging with our teams on topics many of us find troubling – to ‘sit with discomfort', and what Dr Adam's current research shows it that many leads suck in this domain. He presents two specific approaches to help us both engage meaningfully in these challenging and confronting exchanges with our teams, our partners, children and even ourselves. If you don't listen to anything else related to becoming a great leader through the CoVid crisis, listen to this.Key messages from this episode;- Dr Adam's research shows that levels of resilience and adaptability have improved, but that self-care, recovery and sitting with discomfort need rapid improvement.- That high performers gain and maintain this capability by the way they manage struggle- That in many ways both parenting styles and education approaches have eroded our ability to sit with discomfort.- Many of us have been incorrectly taught that good emotion is good and good for us, and that bad emotion is bad and bad for usGet in touch with Dr Adam via any of these points of contact;https://www.linkedin.com/in/dradamfraser/https://twitter.com/DrAdamFraserhttps://www.facebook.com/DrAdamFraserSpeaker/https://www.instagram.com/dradamfraser/?hl=enAdditional resources mentioned in our conversation.- Dr Adam's August Webinar talks for Educators and Parents click here- Dr Adam's programs click hereYou can also check out Dr Adam's TEDx talk on the 3rd Space hereAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Harvee Pene is the Co-Founder of Inspire Accountants – Accountants Who Change Lives, a TEDx Speaker, Author and all-round transformational dude who has been recognised as one of Ten Outstanding Young People in Australia. In this episode we discuss in so many ways the meaning of life. Or at least, how to lean into the toughness of life in order to learn, grow and find meaning. In particular, we look at the journey of discovery to find a greater purpose than yourself in your work and through your career – in Harvee's experience that as an accountant his opportunity is to change lives and enable businesses to become forces for good.He has come a long way from a under-privileged upbringing in New Zealand to founding and leading a company regularly recognised as one of Australia's Top100 businesses – Inspire Accounting. Having recognised an inclination to do more and to change the world, the way he chose to realise that was to confront a life-threatening cancer and focus his life and energies on a greater cause in response to this questions – If today was your last day, would you be happy with what you're leaving behind? His response to this question was to embrace the call to reach beyond his own success, and the success of his clients and to do good and inspire others to become forces for good themselves. This shifted his life mantra from YOLO to YODO, from You Only Live Once to You Only Die Only. We get to live everyday, and in doing so how can we inspire before we expire!!!The question that we then go on to explore in depth is how to do this, how to maximise your contribution and the inspiration this brings to the world. For Harvee, this involved first achieving two goals – to save his clients $10million in combined tax savings, and to give 10million days of live changing access to clean water and sanitation to the worlds poorest people. What he found from a business perspective was that the more good they achieved in the world, the better they did as a business – motivation was higher, team engagement was higher, productivity was higher and all manner of client processes and outcomes saw huge improvement.Having achieved both of these initial goals, he's now more than doubled down – aiming to achieve the seemingly impossible task of giving 1billion days of life changing help. One of the ways Harvee is progressing towards this goal is by launching (along with Better World Leaders very first guest, Paul Dunn) a global network of ‘Accountants for Good', to connect and enable accountants everywhere to act as forces for good in our world.Key messages from this episode;- Life is tough – prepare yourself for a walk in the park – Jurassic Park!- Make every opportunity to make your legacy one you will be proud of. Ask yourself, if today was my last day, would you be happy with what you leave behind?- All business have the potential and the opportunity to be a force for good- Accountants can change lives, and if you're in business anywhere, so can you if you chose to focus on contributing to a purpose higher than yourself- That purpose powers profit, engages teams, engages customers and makes leadership more impactful- We have the opportunity to change from viewing our fellow practitioners in any area as competition, and shift to making them collaborators, and by sharing what we're doing and what's working, to make a live changing contribution.Get in touch with Harvee here;www.harveepene.comAdditional resources mentioned in our conversation.- T-0 app – here- Harvee's TEDx talk hereAs always, great thanks and appreciation to the team who contributed to bringing Better World Leaders to you;To Brendan Ward for production of all audio recordings and composition and performance of original music throughout each episode. To Cooper and the team at RadioHub studios for technical support and creative guidance during the episodes that are recorded face-to-face. Asking a question hands over control.- Power and control exist as invisible webs in organisations.- Think about how this plays out for you, in your world and your work, and what role you play.- Consider doing a ‘power audit'.- An interesting exercise would be to design an organisation chart based not on hierarchy, but on implicit power and control.- Part of your role as a leader is to share power, and provide space for others to step into power.- You control the process, not the outcome. Abigail Forsyth is the inventor of KeepCup, the world's first Barista standard, reusable coffee cup … and she's on a mission to stop us from disposing of one million coffee cups every minute … of every day! It's a very reusable episode 480 of The (award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing Show thanks to American Express and digital marketing agency Yellow.   A little bit more about KeepCup creator Abigail Forsyth … When Abigail Forsyth and her brother Jamie started a cafe business in Melbourne in 1998, disposable coffee cups were starting to become an environmental problem.   Now, as you're about to hear, they're a major problem.   And that's where KeepCups step in. KeepCups are those reusable coffee cups you see people bring in to your local cafe. So instead of using a paper coffee cup that's lined with plastic and thrown away the minute you've got your caffeine fix, KeepCups get used over and over.   They come in all shapes and sizes, colours and can even be personalised with your company branding.   Abigail joined me from her Fitzroy headquarters where we talked about: Why she chose to close the cafes and pursue the KeepCup idea How she used leading baristas as influencers before social influencers was even a thing How she handles the proliferation of copycats flooding the market How she's created an environmentally responsible supply chain And plenty more   “Our vision at KeepCup is a disposable free world." - Abigail Forsyth, KeepCup   Here's what caught my attention from my chat with KeepCup creator Abigail Forsyth It's probably time for us all to take a look at all aspects of our businesses and make changes that will benefit the environment - ideas could include getting all staff a branded KeepCup, going paperless, carpooling to meetings. I love the personalisation option KeepCup offers. Personalisation of particular products is becoming more and more common as technology makes it easier and easier. Remember that interview with Lana Hopkins from Mon Purse? I loved how Abigail used baristas to get the word out. If you'd like to learn more about social influencers then take a listen to the interview I did with Jules Lund who's started an influencer agency called Tribe.   “In today's conversation about single-use plastics and going plastic-free, too often plastics are all tarred with the same brush. I joined Cooper at RadioHub's Sydney studio where we talked about: His top learnings in regards to pre and post production of a podcast New tips, tricks & techniques to help you make a world-class podcast Why we're lagging behind in podcast production in Australia How the big guys are producing and marketing their shows Why we need to up our approach to podcasting Plus plenty more podcasting insights.   “The big media companies are all in - as an independent producer you are competing against big teams of people with big budgets and star pulling power.
