Ruthie Foster joins me on the show this week. I first met Ruthie about 20 years ago, when we were both playing at a Canadian folk festival. We had a few workshops together and really hit it off. She's one of the most incredible singers I've ever heard - so powerful and soulful, but also totally open to jamming and opening things up in a cool way. We re-connected this summer at the Vancouver Folk Festival and had a blast playing together again after all those years.Ruthie is a Grammy Award- winning recording artist (among many other awards!) who has an incredible new album out on Sun Records that she made here in Nashville with Tyler Bryant called “Mileage” - be sure to check it out! That didn't really pan out and Ruthie stepped back from music for a while, joined the Navy, which led to joining the Navy band, which sort of got her back into performing music. After her time in the Navy, Ruthie re-committed to music and started releasing her first solo albums, of which she now has 11 or 12 out since about 1997. They're all excellent, and Ruthie has always stayed true to her roots of blues, soul, gospel, folk and rock & roll. One of my favourite types of interviews is when I get to interview someone who has hit their financial independence or retirement number early, and then picking their brain on how they got there, what worked well for them, what didn't, what mistakes they could have avoided, and learning what makes them feel happy and fulfilled both before and after hitting financial independence. Well this time, I got to do this with one of the most famous personal finance experts in Canada, David Chilton, who, as you may know, was also one of the dragons on Dragon's Den. Between the birth of my two children I earned another Master's in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford. If ever I can afford a life of leisure, I hope to return and do a real degree studying comparative eschatology.   A very large part of my life has been spent working, volunteering and consulting in the international human rights field, including by increasing access to anti-surveillance and censorship tools in Iran, China, Myanmar, and elsewhere; working with civil rights lawyers representing political dissidents; supporting refugee and asylum claimants; and conducting and publishing original research on the repression of religious minorities in China (I've also published on this topic for more popular audiences). It's a country that I love, but only in the abstract; I was blacklisted at 16 and cannot obtain a visa. I've also written and co-produced two feature documentary films on the themes of religious and political persecution, censorship, forced labour, scapegoating, and mass persuasion under totalitarian regimes.   A few of these topics recur in my most recent documentary, which focuses on my experience of 'cancel culture' following a catastrophic bid for political office in 2019 (read my contemporaneous account of events here). Relatedly, I'm the plaintiff in an ongoing $7 million defamation claim against several Canadian media and political institutions, and my case has so far resulted in the recognition of a new tort of civil harassment in Alberta. I'm honoured to welcome a man whose life has been defined by service, mentorship, and an extraordinary commitment to Canadian boxing: Peter Wylie. Peter was born in Toronto in 1946 and went on to serve nearly two decades as a Toronto police officer, later working as a sheriff's officer and small-business owner. But his story — and his impact — extend far beyond any single career path. In 1972, Peter founded the Cabbagetown Youth Centre (CYC), a place that would become a second home for thousands of young people. He led the Centre for a decade and remained closely tied to it for generations, eventually being named Honourable Patron in 2022. But Peter's greatest legacy lives inside the ring. For 50 years, he served as the head boxing coach at the CYC, shaping a program that produced athletes, leaders, and countless stories of perseverance. His coaching career spanned the globe — from the 1980 Olympic boycott year, to the 1984 Los Angeles Games, to the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and later his leadership of Canada's women's national boxing team from 2003 to 2007. In 1982, Peter was named Canada's Amateur Coach of the Year, and over the decades he stepped into nearly every role the sport could offer: referee, judge, trainer, manager, promoter — and even an actor in boxing-related film and television productions. Married since 1968, with three children and five grandchildren, Peter is officially “retired,” but the truth is his influence is still everywhere — in the gyms he built, the athletes he shaped, and the communities he helped uplift. Today, we talk about boxing, community, and the lessons learned over a lifetime in and around the ring.
