TCW Podcast Episode 232 - All the Other Home Pongs   The home Pong market of the mid-1970s extended far beyond the big three—Atari, Coleco, and Magnavox. Numerous smaller companies entered the scene, not only in the United States but also across Europe and other parts of the world. As the home gaming industry rapidly evolved, many manufacturers introduced unique systems powered by integrated circuits. The market truly took off with the advent of “Pong-on-a-Chip” technology, which made it possible for virtually anyone to build a Pong console. Combined with affordable manufacturing in the Far East, this innovation drove costs down and helped the market reach new heights.   Rocko's Modern Life - Dracula: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ycpsJOtxx8 TCW 105 - The Big Voice of Magnavox: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-big-voice-of-magnavox/ TCW 106 - The Small Voice of Magnavox: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-small-voice-of-magnavox/ TCW 027 - The Magnavox Patent Lawsuits: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-magnavox-patent-lawsuits-friday-september-16-2016-1003-am/ TCW 051 - Sons of Pong: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/sons-of-pong/ Overkal: https://prehistoricgaming.com/en/overkal-history/ TCW 165 - Allied Leisure: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/allied-leisure/ Universal Research Laboratory (URL) Video Action Systems: https://www.pong-story.com/url.htm Mike the TV 99.99.99: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt2xW8nh864 Executive Games: https://www.pong-story.com/executivegames.htm First Dimension: https://www.pong-story.com/firstdim.htm Executive Games - Face Off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB-pSaZ1e28 TCW 124 - The Visions of Coleco Part 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-visions-of-coleco-part-1/ TCW 125 - The Visions of Coleco Part 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-visions-of-coleco-part-2/ Pong In a Chip: https://www.pong-story.com/gi.htm Videomaster: https://www.pong-story.com/vm.htm Videomaster Home TV Game: https://prehistoricgaming.com/en/videomaster-home-tv-game/ Interton Video 2000: https://www.pong-story.com/v2000.htm AY3-8500 System on a Chip: https://nerdstuffbycole.blogspot.com/2018/09/games-and-field-generation-in-ay-3-8500.html Zanussi: https://www.pong-story.com/zanussi.htm TCW 077 - Invading Taito Part 1: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/invading-taito-part-1/ TCW 078 - Invading Taito Part 2: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/invading-taito-part-2 APF TV Fun: https://retrogamingconsoles.com/consoles/apf-tv-fun/ APF Fun Demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmIE3k2BGs0 Unisonic Pong Console: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFOkE1_52NA Interton Video 2400: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLCnacjnBOs Videomaster Superscore: https://www.pong-story.com/vm8.htm   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. Fan Mail Me BrrrruuuuunnndenEver warned your kids about something only to watch them do it anyway and face the consequences? This episode dives into the perfect example of that parenting cycle when two teenagers attempt to return shoes at the mall despite warnings that it wouldn't go well. After being refused by a store employee they colorfully nickname "Fat Ginger," the boys learn the hard way why their parents said no in the first place. Their father doesn't miss the opportunity to drive home an important life lesson: "We say no for a reason, not because we don't want you to do it, but because it's not the right thing." It's the parenting equivalent of "I told you so," delivered with just enough restraint to make the point without rubbing salt in the wound. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when the discussion shifts to the Minecraft movie and the surprising phenomenon of audience participation that's erupted around it. The generational divide becomes starkly apparent as the teenagers enthusiastically defend screaming catchphrases and throwing popcorn as "not a movie, but an experience," while their father advocates for traditional theater etiquette and respect for other viewers. This family dynamic reaches peak entertainment when they debate the evolution of video games, with Dad proudly claiming his gaming credentials by referencing classics like Pong, Pac-Man, and GoldenEye, only to be dismissed with the devastating teenage comeback: "You're just calling yourself old." The authentic family banter, complete with interruptions, playful insults, and genuine moments of connection, makes this episode relatable to anyone who's ever been a parent or a teenager navigating the sometimes frustrating, often funny territory of family relationships.Want to join the conversation?

Pong hosted really well - his voice was a beacon of joy when he sang at the beginning and end of the episode. But why must he pull a gun all the time? Why???? Because. http://buymeacoffee.com/journeyofpingpong

It's not Pac-Man or Donkey Kong or even Pong… it's The Oregon Trail. A true pioneer (and we don't just mean the ones in the covered wagons), the Oregon Trail has sold more than 65 million copies (that's more than the Beatles' White Album) and it spawned an “edu-tainment” industry now worth over $6B. But this wholesome game was created by three Minnesota student teachers, without a single thought towards making money… which is exactly why Oregon Trail made so much of it. Find out why this iconic game is a textbook MVP (Minimum Viable Product)… how an acquisition by Shark Tank's “Mr. Wonderful” almost led to a collab with Barbie… and why the Oregon Trail is the best idea yet.Subscribe to The Best Idea Yet for the untold origin stories of the products you're obsessed with, and the bold risk takers who brought them to life. Everything to Play For: How Videogames Are Changing the World (Verso, 2024) by Marijiam Did asks if videogames can achieve egalitarian goals instead of fuelling hyper-materialist, reactionary agendas. Combining cultural theory and materialist critiques with accessible language and personal anecdotes, industry insider Marijam Did engages both novices and seasoned connoisseurs. From the innovations of Pong and Doom to the intricate multiplayer or narrative-driven games, the author highlights the multifaceted stories of the gaming communities and the political actors who organise among them. Crucially, the focus also includes the people who make the games, shedding light on the brutal processes necessary to bring titles to the public. The videogame industry, now larger than the film and music industries combined, has a proven ability to challenge the status quo. With a rich array of examples, Did argues for a nuanced understanding of gaming's influence so that this extraordinary power can be harnessed for good. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Forget your lame Pong, man. We’ve got a pocketful of quarters and we’re heading to the Arcade at the mall!

Pong is a table tennis–themed twitch arcade sports video game, featuring simple two-dimensional graphics, manufactured by Atari and originally released on 29 November 1972. It is one of the earliest arcade video games; it was created by Allan Alcorn as a training exercise assigned to him by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, but Bushnell and Atari co-founder Ted Dabney were surprised by the quality of Alcorn's work and decided to manufacture the game. Bushnell based the game's concept on an electronic ping-pong game included in the Magnavox Odyssey, the first home video game console. In response, Magnavox later sued Atari for patent infringement.
