STREAMING THE MAKING OF The JOHM BATCHELOR SHOW, 7-21-261903This transcript captures a discussion between John Batchelor and former Congressman Thaddeus McCarter regarding the geopolitical and domestic challenges facing the United States as it nears a midterm election. Internationally, the dialogue covers a variety of crises, including the outbreak of Ebola in Africa, military tensions with Iran and Hezbollah, and brewing trade disputes involving Canadian tariffs. Domestically, the speakers analyze how rising gasoline prices and inflation are shaping voter sentiment and impacting Republican strategy. They also address the internal fractures within both major parties, specifically the influence of MAGA loyalists on the right and Democratic Socialists on the left. Finally, the conversation critiques President Trump's fixation on the 2020 election, questioning whether such rhetoric hinders the party's future viability.

Full Show only on Patreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Episode Teaser Summary: Dave is back in the garage with Heart Attack Doug for a hilarious and chaotic Dopey Tuesday reunion! The episode opens with a fresh Surrealismo remix of the Dopey theme, sparking an immediate debate over Beatles remixes, Rocky Raccoon, and who actually wrote the hits (with Dave campaigning hard for Izzy Stradlin). Doug brings the fire with savage voice memos and an all-time great impression of a whiny, anti-Semitic Dave, while the duo dives headfirst into classic meeting drama — someone stole from the collection basket and now the boys argue about gossip vs. playing cop, benefit of the doubt, and trusted servant votes. Doug drops sensible recovery wisdom, Long Island sprinkler guy corruption stories, and his famous “bragging or complaining” diagnosis. They also tease Dave's vacation stories, Canadian wildfire smoke horror, Kratom opinions (and Dave's upcoming Rolling Stone piece), and read spicy Spotify comments praising Ray Brown while dragging Doug. It all wraps with a raw live musical moment and classic Dopey banter. Pure unfiltered chaos, laughs, and real talk — classic Dave & Doug energy. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Morning Announcements

Today's Headlines: Kash Patel scheduled a trip to Russia in October with no disclosed agenda or meeting list, which is a perfectly normal thing for the FBI director to do while leading an agency that investigates Russian interference. In tariff news, Trump dropped new tariffs on Canada — specifically cars, alcohol, cheese, and hockey sticks — on products covered by the USMCA trade deal he negotiated himself in 2020 and called "the best deal ever," though they don't kick in for 30 days so this is probably a stunt. Meanwhile, the cyclospora lettuce saga got weirder when the FDA announced the positive test on Taylor Farms lettuce was a "false positive" — conveniently after Taylor Farms donated a million dollars to Trump's super PAC in 2025, six days after the FDA delayed food traceability rules that would have applied to companies like Taylor Farms, and one day after Taylor Farms executives met with senior FDA officials before issuing their voluntary recall and blaming Taco Bell, so the whole thing smells like something other than lettuce. On ICE, the FBI will no longer investigate confrontations between ICE agents and civilians — essentially eliminating the only oversight ICE was ever exposed to — with responsibility for investigating ICE now falling to ICE itself, and traffic stops resuming less than 24 hours after DHS said they'd stop them. On a related press freedom note, the DOJ subpoenaed phone records of multiple New York Times journalists, at least two of their spouses, and one of their mothers, dating back to January 1st — long before their reporting on Trump's Qatari jet. A judge temporarily blocked the Paramount-Warner Brothers merger for two weeks, siding with 12 state attorneys general on antitrust grounds, which means Bari Weiss running CNN is on hold until at least August 3rd. On the election beat, Lindsey Graham's sister Darline — sworn in less than two weeks after her brother died — announced on Sean Hannity that she's running for the full six-year term, citing "inner peace," which is one way to process grief. And finally, on a genuinely positive note, Senator Andy Kim introduced MediKIDS, legislation that would automatically enroll every child at birth in health insurance through age 26, covering 4.4 million uninsured kids. The news got so absurd this week that we're doing a light episode, and it's still somehow about a captured government.Robin breaks down the domestic news stories you can't believe are real: the FDA apologized to Taylor Farms, a million-dollar MAGA donor, in the middle of a cyclospora outbreak that has sickened 7,000 Americans with explosive diarrhea tied to Taco Bell lettuce, while RFK Jr. ignores Jon Ossoff's letter about the gutted CDC surveillance program that should have caught it.Also this episode: Andrew and Tristan Tate arrested by US Marshals in Miami, facing 59 UK rape and human trafficking charges and doing their perp walk in tan jail jumpsuits. Trump's Iran war hits month five of a promised six weeks, with 17 American service members dead, as Rep. Carlos Gimenez calls it "the nature of warfare." Plus Trump crashing Spain's World Cup trophy celebration, the Qatari Air Force One getting "maxed out" over security problems, Kash Patel planning an FBI director trip to Moscow hosted by the FSB, 50 percent tariffs on Canadian hockey sticks, Pete Hegseth's Pentagon plan to hide unclassified records from FOIA, Megyn Kelly's 12-minute Michelle Obama rant, the racist MAGA meltdown over Lupita Nyong'o and Elliot Page in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (which just posted the biggest opening of 2026 anyway), John Fetterman's Israel red line, Bill Maher saying yes to JD Vance, and Lindsey Graham's Senate seat passing to his sister Darline Graham Nordone like a family heirloom.Political commentary with receipts, three times a week. Today's top stories, with context, in just 15 minutes. On today's podcast:1) The US and Iran exchanged strikes for a 10th consecutive day as mediators sought to revive a truce, with the US targeting military command centers and Iran attacking US military sites in Kuwait and Jordan. The Houthi militant group in Yemen threatened shipping in the Red Sea, and the Saudi-led coalition said it is taking steps to protect ships sailing in the area. Oil prices have surged and US retail gasoline prices have climbed back over $4 a gallon, potentially hurting Trump and his Republican Party before midterm elections.2) The Trump administration vowed to impose a fresh 50% tariff on some Canadian goods over what it said was unfair treatment of American alcohol, cars and dairy. The items subject to the new tariff include milk, hockey equipment, beer and plywood — but not major resource imports such as energy, potash and critical minerals. The tariffs are being applied under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, which gives the president the power to impose duties of as much as 50% on countries deemed to discriminate against US commerce.3) President Trump said he had a “very good conversation” with new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and that they would be meeting in the “not too distant future." Trump and Burnham discussed many subjects, including the outstanding relationship between the US and the UK, North Sea oil, trade, and demining the Strait of Hormuz. Burnham's office said the prime minister congratulated Trump on the World Cup tournament and invited the president to visit Manchester in one of his first calls as UK leader.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I am joined by veteran Canadian broadcaster Lynda Steele to trace her four-decade journey across TV, radio, and now podcasting. Lynda recalls growing up in Hinton, Alberta, having no clear career path, and how government-funded aptitude testing unexpectedly pointed her to broadcast journalism. She shares early newsroom stories from CKVU in Vancouver and ITV/Global Edmonton, including covering major events like the 1987 Edmonton tornado and the day Wayne Gretzky was traded, and reflects on how technology—or the lack of it—shaped coverage.Lynda contrasts the cultures of Edmonton and Vancouver, talks candidly about transitioning to talk radio at CKNW, and the intense pressure of hosting a four-hour daily show while dealing with listener backlash, especially as a woman in a male-skewing talk format. She also unpacks declining trust in media, political polarization, and how Trump-era “fake news” rhetoric bled into Canada. Finally, Lynda discusses her current podcast Change My Mind, co-hosted with Melanie Nagy, where she leans into curiosity, vulnerability, and open-minded conversations that can genuinely shift perspectives. You can find Lynda's podcast by searching for Change My Mind here....Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter.
