Proximity and connectedness are basic requirements of mankind. Remarkable, in modern societies, despite high population density in metropolitan areas the number of people living alone seems to increase steadily. This is particular true for older people, however, over the total life span vulnerable phases can be identified which increase the risk of social isolation. Large scale prospective population based studies in many sites all over the industrialized world have evidenced that sustained feelings of social isolation and loneliness subsequently impact severely mental health but also somatic health of its victims.Particularly, this has been shown for cardio-vascular and metabolic diseases. Theses strong associations require medical explanations. We will give a condensed overview about the state of the art in psycho-(neuro)-physiology and will demonstrate why such adverse emotions of loneliness impact our health so deeply. Here, an impaired HPA axis and dysfunctions of the immune system play a most prominent role. We will not end without trying to draw conclusions of the actual basic research findings for supporting and treating these subjects at risk. Karl Heinz LADWIG - is Professor of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychological Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and is affiliated to the Department of Psycho-somatic Medicine and Psychotherapy. http://www.psychosomatik.mri.tum.de He is also Head of the Mental Health Epidemiology Unit of the Institute of Epidemiology at the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, German Research Centre for Environmental Health in Munich. As clinical epidemiologist, he coordinates the mental health issues of the Institute. Major research topics of KH Ladwig comprise mental health related stress research in psycho-diabetology, psycho-cardiology (bio-behavioural concepts in cardiology) – both in risk factor epidemiology and clinical research – aging research and psycho-traumatology. His group contributes since a long time research findings by elucidating epidemiological, clinical and basic findings to better understand the impact social support, isolation and loneliness on health. Recorded in Udine 4th July - IFOTES Congress "Leaving loneliness, building relationships"
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.30.229492v1?rss=1 Authors: Kraus, B., Perez, D., Ladwig, Z., Seitzman, B. A., Dworetsky, A., Petersen, S., Gratton, C. Abstract: Recent work has demonstrated that individual-specific variations in functional networks can be reliably identified in individuals using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). These individual differences in functional connectivity have been termed network variants and exhibit reliability across time with resting-state fMRI data. These properties have suggested that network variants may be relatively trait-like markers of individual differences in brain organization. Another test of this conclusion would be to examine if network variants are stable between task and rest states. Here, we use precision data from the Midnight Scan Club (MSC) to demonstrate that (1) task data can be used to identify network variants reliably, (2) these network variants show substantial spatial overlap with those observed in rest, although state-specific effects are present, (3) network variants assign to similar canonical functional networks across states, and (4) single tasks or a combination of multiple tasks produce similar network variants to rest. Together, these findings further reinforce the trait-like nature of network variants and demonstrate the utility of using task data to define network variants. Copy rights belong to original authors. In this episode: We continue our conversation with Alan Ladwig, the author of “See You in Orbit? Our Dream of Spaceflight.” Between 1981 and 1990, Alan held a variety of positions at NASA Headquarters, including Director of Special Projects for the Office of Exploration and Manager of the Shuttle Student Involvement Program. Alan was also Manager of NASA’s Space Flight Participant program in the 1980s, which included the “Teacher in Space” project, most famously known for its selection of Christa McAuliffe as the first teacher and civilian to be chosen to participate in spaceflight. In this second part of our conversation, Alan discusses how Russia played an early role in paving the way for civilian passengers to travel to the International Space Station, the plans that four companies currently have to develop commercial space stations for civilian use, how the arts are regarded within the space community, and how the prohibitive cost of space travel hinders the democratization of space. In discussing how high costs prevent more access to space, Alan said, “We want space to be an environment that is experienced by a wider range of people. Not just scientists, engineers... Not trained astronauts and cosmonauts, but people from all walks of life. Because … space is just an extension of who we are.” For more information on Alan and his current pursuits, visit his website at toorbitproductions.com, and visit his Facebook page to view his space-inspired artwork.

Event recording from 22/11/2017 In conversation with Deborah Haynes, defence correspondent for The Times, Dr Walter C. Ladwig III discusses the challenges of intervening in internal conflicts and how the United States can best exert influence over a government it is supporting in counterinsurgency to change their policies. Summary: Why has it been so difficult for the United States to effectively assist countries like Iraq and Afghanistan in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency? That's the question Walter Ladwig asks in his new book, The Forgotten Front: Patron-Client Relationships in Counterinsurgency (Cambridge University Press 2017), which analyzes the often-fraught political relationship between the U.S. government and a local regime it is attempting to advise and support in its conflict against terrorist and insurgent groups. Although a patron and its client are often presumed to be partners in such an endeavour, in this study of American interventions in the Philippines, Vietnam, and El Salvador during the Cold War, Ladwig details the stark differences of preferences and priorities that can exist between them. This often means the U.S. must give as much attention to modifying the behaviour of its local partner as it does to counter the insurgents. Author: Walter C. Ladwig III a Lecturer in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London and an Associate Fellow in Asian Security at the Royal United Services Institution (RUSI) in London. Specializing in U.S. foreign policy and internal conflicts, his scholarly work has been published in several journals including International Security, the Journal of Strategic Studies, and Asian Survey, among others. He has commented on international affairs for the Washington Post, the Financial Times, and the BBC and his opinion pieces have appeared in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Walter received a B.A. from the University of Southern California, an M.P.A. from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford. Discussant: Deborah Haynes is the Defence Editor of the Times. She has covered the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, as well as defence and security issues in the UK. She won the 2008 Amnesty International award for newspaper journalism and the inaugural Tony Bevins Prize for investigative journalism for her series on the plight of Iraqi interpreters in the Times that led the UK government to offer hundreds of former Iraqi employees compensation or asylum. Deborah was educated at Cardiff University and Surugadai University in Japan and was named a Doctor of Science honoris causa by the University of Salford.
