Coral reefs have long been regarded as one of the earliest and most significant ecological casualties of global warming. And as ocean temperatures continue to rise, mass bleaching and die-offs have gone from being rare to a somewhat regular occurrence. Aside from climatic changes, human activities are no doubt damaging reefs beyond repair. Overfishing, pollution and coastal development are at the top of the list of chronic stressors. And meanwhile, reefs are also dredged or sandblasted for their limestone or to improve access and navigational safety in some areas.  On this episode of Climate Connections, Vriko Yu, CEO of Archireef shares her personal story of witnessing the disappearance of a small patch of coral community in just two months during her research project and how that led to the founding of her climate tech venture that's working to restore fragile marine ecosystems by using 3D printing technology and some good old-fashioned terracotta.  Archireef, which was founded in 2020, made the Forbes 100 To Watch List in 2023. — Women's wellness emphasizes maintaining the pelvic floor muscles as a key component of a healthy lifestyle. Pelvic floor function contributes to proper organ support, core strength, and sex satisfaction when it functions properly. The weakness of the pelvic muscles can cause incontinence, muscle and nerve pain, and organ prolapse in women. The underlying cause of pelvic floor dysfunction should be explored by pelvic floor physical therapists if women experience health issues related to it. Occasionally, a pelvic floor isn't weak, but it doesn't know how to relax. It is possible to achieve the desired results through physical therapy or targeted exercise routines. As women get older, pelvic floor problems often arise, but they don't have to result in issues that reduce quality of life. By taking preventive measures or addressing problems as they arise, women can reduce the effects of muscle weakness and maintain optimal pelvic floor health. Valeria interviews Gloria Kolb — She is the CEO and co-founder of Elitone®, an FDA-cleared, non-invasive wearable treatment for women with urinary incontinence. As an inventor with 30 patents, Gloria's accolades include Best New Product of 2019 by My Face My Body awards, Sling Shot 2020, and a top 10 finalist in Google's Women Startup Challenge. How are foodservice consumers contending with persistent inflation? Are they eating more at home, for example, or continuing to treat themselves at their favorite restaurants? The latest episode of The Food Institute Podcast examines that topic with Krystle Mobayeni of BentoBox, who dissected rapidly evolving consumer dining dynamics. More About Krystle Mobayeni: Krystle Mobayeni is the Co-Founder of BentoBox and Head of Restaurants at Fiserv, a global provider of payments and technology solutions that enables 200,000 restaurants to deliver differentiating experiences. BentoBox aims to empower modern restaurants to build their online presence, diversify revenue, engage with diners, and increase operational efficiency. Under her leadership, BentoBox was acquired by Fiserv in November 2021. Prior to BentoBox, Krystle co-founded Neon & Sons, a full-service digital creative agency in New York City, working with clients like Rent the Runway, NASDAQ, Robin Hood Foundation and more. Earlier, she led design teams as Art Director and Senior Designer at Big Spaceship, and Agency.com (acquired by TBWA). If someone says “no” to me, then I put blinders on, and I'm going to make it happen. In today's episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of speaking with Eve Picker, the visionary Founder & CEO of Small Change. Eve shared some groundbreaking insights on how her platform is transforming real estate investment.Eve's company is a beacon of innovation in the finance sector, leveraging crowdfunding to make real estate investment accessible to all. This model isn't just about raising funds; it's a robust approach to community building and social equity. "What I really love about this regulation," Eve explained, "is that it's the SEC's first attempt to democratize investment." Through Small Change, individuals from any background can invest in projects that reshape their own neighborhoods. This democratic approach is crucial. Traditionally, real estate investment has been a bastion for the affluent, often inaccessible to the average person. Small Change disrupts this norm by empowering people from diverse backgrounds to have a stake in the development that affects them directly. The impact of Eve's work extends beyond financial returns. It's about creating inclusive communities and revitalizing areas that traditional developers might overlook. It's also a testament to the power of innovative financial tools to create real, positive change in society. As we wrapped up our conversation, it was clear that Eve's dedication to democratizing investment is more than just business; it's a passion for social impact. With leaders like Eve at the helm, the future of real estate investment is not only promising but inclusive.Eve will be one of the distinguished participants in SuperCrowd24, a two-day virtual conference beginning tomorrow. This event is a dynamic assembly aimed at revolutionizing the way we think about crowdfunding and investment and Eve's involvement is particularly noteworthy. At SuperCrowd24, she will be engaging with other CEOs in a panel discussion, exploring the complexities and challenges faced by leaders in the crowdfunding sphere. Eve's insights, drawn from her extensive experience as a founder of a crowdfunding platform that emphasizes social impact in real estate, will undoubtedly highlight her commitment to innovation and democratizing investment opportunities. It's an event designed to empower attendees with knowledge and networking opportunities, making the complex world of crowdfunding more accessible and actionable. This is a pivotal moment for anyone interested in the intersection of real estate, social impact, and investment. Devin Thorpe introduces Eve Picker, CEO and founder of Small Change, a crowdfunding portal for real estate projects with social impact.2. Eve discusses recent expansion at Small Change, including the addition of five new partners from another real estate crowdfunding platform.3. The short-term effect of this expansion is increased busyness and the need to align the new partners with Small Change's processes and compliance issues.4. Long-term implications include the ability to handle more and larger listings and to take on a broader range of projects.5. Small Change leverages Regulation Crowdfunding, which enables developers to raise capital from the public for projects with emphasis on democratizing investment.6. The platform focuses on overlooked neighborhoods and developers, often unable to access capital through traditional means, by allowing them to raise money from people who care about their projects.7. Small Change has a unique rubric to ensure that listed projects make some form of social impact, whether through the team, the neighborhood, the creation of public spaces, or environmental contributions.8. Examples of diversity in projects include a developer helping his community buy neighborhood shopping centers and another who is purchasing and restoring great estates in the Berkshires.9. Investing through Small Change offers possibilities of equity ownership or debt investment in real estate projects, but like any investment, it comes with inherent risks.10. Devin and Eve discuss her determination and persistence, especially in the face of resistance, as her superpower that led to the creation of Small Change, aiming to disrupt the traditional system and to empower overlooked developers and communities. How to Develop Persistence As a SuperpowerIn today's episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Eve, a remarkable pioneer in real estate crowdfunding, about her superpower.  She articulates it with inspiring clarity as “persistence."Eve's superpower of persistence is evident in her tenacious approach to overcoming barriers in the traditionally exclusive field of real estate investment. This resilience has not only propelled her career but also enabled her to create Small Change, which aims to democratize access to real estate funding. By refusing to accept 'no' as an answer and continuously pushing forward against adversity, Eve has innovated ways to support underserved developers and communities. One illustrative story that Eve shared demonstrates this superpower vividly. As the only female commercial real estate developer in Pittsburgh for some time, she faced significant challenges, especially during the 2008 financial crisis. Unable to secure necessary funding due to restrictive traditional lending practices, Eve's real estate development practice was at risk. Her response was to create Small Change, inspired by the potential of the JOBS Act and Regulation Crowdfunding to change her fate and that of others facing similar hurdles. To develop persistence as a personal strength, Eve suggests a methodical approach, breaking down large visions into manageable tasks. Key tips include:1. **Envision the End Goal:** Start with a clear vision of what you aim to achieve.2. **Break It Down:** Segment your vision into smaller, actionable parts to avoid feeling overwhelmed.3. **Work Systematically:** Tackle each segment one at a time, ensuring thorough attention to detail and steady progress.By following Eve's example and advice, you can make persistence a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileEve Picker (she/her):Founder & CEO, Small Change.coAbout Small Change (dot) co: SmallChange.co has helped 49 developers raise $14.5 million for projects in 27 cities, big and small, across the United States. SmallChange.co uses its proprietary Small Change Index™ to measure a broad array of factors to determine the project's social impact with the goal of creating more affordable, more equitable and more innovative communities. To date, 62% of the deals funded via the Small Change platform have either a minority and/or female sponsor, and all of them score above 60% on the Small Change Index.  Additionally, 68% of the mixed-use or residential projects listed on the platform have included affordable housing, and almost 90% have been located in underserved communities.Website: www.smallchange.coEve's Podcast: www.rethinkrealestateforgood.coBiographical Information: Lover of cities. Questions We Answer in This Episode: If you lose your libido during menopause is it gone for good? Even with HRT? What treatments are there for vaginal atrophy post menopause? Meno has kinda made the Big O a small o. How can I fix that? The Big O was always toe-curling and several minutes of luscious spasms and an hour of ooey gooey oxytocin, but now not so much. Is there a natural alternative to Estradiol vaginal cream used to help prevent UTI's? Can regular use of antihistamine (h1, Claritin &h2, Pepcid) affect libido & cause fatigue? Taking for MCAS currently. What can I do for painful intercourse? Tried KY jelly and the like but the pain is excruciating. How to prevent UTI's (beyond the basics)? I have started using D-Manose, a women's probiotic which seems to help but wondering if there are any other suggestions. Any recommendations for keeping things fulfilling if spouse has ED? Can estradiol vaginal cream or estrogen HRT cause bleeding for those with fibroids and a thin endometrial membrane?  Libido. Even though I'm on HRT it's virtually non-existent. Difficult when your partner's libido stays healthy. What can I do about this? What are the best exercises for tightening up the pelvic floor muscles please? The info out there can seem confusing as to which exercises actually work the best. Do the toning balls that are inserted? What is more effective than basic kegels? Dee Poku Spalding creates spaces where women can be transactional and ask and receive without the pretense of five coffee chats. As the founder and CEO of The WIE Suite (Women, Inspiration, and Enterprise), a private membership club and peer learning platform for women in leadership, which I am a proud member of, Dee's mission is to redefine the way women and leaders achieve success for themselves and their companies by providing the community and tools for them to succeed at the highest levels.  She is also the founder of the initiative Black Women Raise, which works to accelerate the ability of leading black female founders to raise growth capital, scale up and create pathways for the women behind them.  Growing up between the UK and Ghana has influenced her humble and reserved leadership style, of which she has many lessons to share. Before founding The WIE Suite (and previously WIE Network), Dee worked in entertainment marketing at companies like Paramount and Focus Features.  In this episode, we learn about Dee's meticulous planning skills, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and considering one's emotional responses to external stimuli like social media when adjusting plans. Dee created The WIE Suite because she was missing a community to lean on, to challenge the scarcity mindset, and to help empower women to rise. We also discuss the wisdom gained from rejection and the learnings from being a quiet leader.  Dee is one of Marie Claire's 50 Women Changing the World, a Crain's Notable Black Leader, won a Gold Anthem Award from the Webbys, is a CUP Catalyst Changemaker, a Harlem Fashion Week Cultural Icon and one of TRUE Africa's 100 Top Innovators. Dee serves on the Board of Directors of The Gotham Institute of Film and the Brooklyn Bridge Conservancy as well as the British Academy of Film & Television (BAFTA)'s DEI steering committee.
