The White House has fired the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Susan Monarez, after only one month in the position. This comes just days after she reportedly clashed with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over his stance on vaccines. Several other top CDC officials announced they were quitting in her wake, leaving the health agency in turmoil. Doctor Fiona Havers is a former CDC official and infectious disease expert, who resigned from her post as a Senior Vaccine Adviser in June, citing concerns about changes to the agency's vaccine processes under Secretary Kennedy. U.S. businesses are increasingly claiming USMCA exemptions as rising tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other goods push import costs higher. This has led to a sharp increase in USMCA compliance for goods from Canada, reaching 81% in June, and from Mexico, now at 77%. Massachusetts state troopers sentenced after involvement in a CDL fraud scheme. Calvin Butner received three months in jail and Perry Mendes one month, both for falsifying CDL test scores and giving passing grades to unqualified applicants. Three other individuals involved in the scheme are still awaiting their sentencing. Canada Post has also made headlines, reporting its largest-ever pre-tax loss of US$294 million in the second quarter due to a significant drop in parcel volumes. This decline, which has been steady since December, resulted from a prolonged contract dispute with mail carriers that pushed shippers to private carriers. Overall revenue for Canada Post was down 7.3%, with a 36.7% decrease in parcel revenue. Florian:Sim, lembro bem disso. Inclusive, naquela época vocês tinham outro nome, não era? Acho que era “Pexto”, se não me engano.As coisas mudam, mas estamos felizes que deu certo. José, talvez possamos começar um pouco falando do seu histórico e da sua trajetória pessoal. Pode nos contar sobre sua origem e o que você fazia antes de empreender? José:Claro. Eu nasci e cresci em uma cidade pequena da Colômbia chamada Cartagena. Hoje é turística e bastante conhecida, mas, quando eu crescia lá, era apenas um destino nacional, relativamente pequeno. Eu, inclusive, nasci em Barranquilla porque minha mãe era de lá — que é ainda menor.De Barranquilla vêm muitas coisas conhecidas: Shakira, a Avianca (nossa companhia aérea nacional), e as últimas duas empresas colombianas que abriram capital nos EUA também são de lá.É uma cidade muito empreendedora. Talvez um bom precedente para a Cobre, não é? Venho de uma família de imigrantes libaneses — extremamente trabalhadores e empreendedores. Cresci aprendendo, por osmose, o que significava ser um empresario. Homens e mulheres da minha família sempre fundaram e até hoje administram empresas. Era um ambiente muito natural para acabar trilhando o caminho que trilhei. Depois tive o privilégio de estudar na Universidade da Pensilvânia. Meu primo Felipe — hoje cofundador da Cobre — estudava lá um ano antes de mim. Eu nunca achei que conseguiria entrar, mas consegui, e fui para a Penn cursar a graduação. No meu primeiro ano, li um business case sobre a M-Pesa, considerada precursora do dinheiro móvel — e, por consequência, de boa parte do que chamamos hoje de fintech: Zelle, Venmo, Paytm, GCash…A ideia original surgiu da M-Pesa, um serviço criado pela Vodafone que permitia às pessoas enviar dinheiro via SMS. Hoje, algo como 20% do PIB do Quênia transita pela M-Pesa. É completamente ubíquo. Inspirado nisso, tentei várias vezes criar algo parecido na Colômbia durante meus verões na Penn, mas obviamente falhei — afinal, eu não era uma empresa de telecomunicações. Ainda assim, essa experiência me mostrou como uma infraestrutura de pagamentos em tempo real poderia transformar a vida de milhões de pessoas e empresas. Ao me formar, voltei para a Colômbia para tentar de novo. E falhei mais uma vez. Foi aí que percebi: “o problema sou eu, preciso aprender a construir empresas de verdade”. Então fui trabalhar na McKinsey em Nova York. Passei um ano e meio lá e tive como cliente uma das maiores gestoras de venture capital do mundo. Eu era apenas analista júnior na equipe, mas aprendi muito sobre como os VCs pensam. Isso me levou a largar o emprego em Nova York e me mudar para a Cidade do México, para trabalhar na Oyo Rooms, um dos grandes unicórnios da Índia. A ideia era aprender mais sobre startups de hiperescala do que eu aprenderia ficando na consultoria. Fiquei um ano e meio na Oyo — até a pandemia começar. Com a COVID, percebi: “este é o momento certo para digitalizar pagamentos na Colômbia”. As empresas estavam forçadas a mudar. E foi quando decidi voltar a Bogotá, em junho de 2020, para tentar mais uma vez. E agora, cá estamos. Florian:Muito interessante. Não sabia de todas essas tentativas que não deram certo antes.Aliás, eu também estudei na Penn, me formei em 2010. Você foi alguns anos depois, certo? José:Sim, me formei em 2018. E naquela época, o ambiente ainda era mais voltado para carreiras tradicionais. A maioria queria ir para consultoria, bancos de investimento ou fundos. Eu era um dos poucos insistindo em empreender já na graduação. Participei até de competições de startups do MBA, porque não havia para undergrad. Recent data from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) estimates that there are ~100,000 free-roaming aoudad west of the Pecos River. To put that in perspective, that is more than the entire bighorn (Rocky Mountain, California, & desert) population in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Texas was home to more than 1,800 desert bighorn sheep just a decade ago – a historical high and a success story population re-established through efforts by TPWD, WSF Affiliate Texas Bighorn Society (TBS), the Wild Sheep Foundation, and other Texas-based hunter/conservationist organizations. Today, that number has dwindled to about 400. Desert bighorns in Texas are in jeopardy of being extirpated for a second time. The cause? Competition for forage and water, and disease from the invasive aoudad, first introduced as a hunting species by TPWD in 1957 in Palo Duro Canyon.  To some, aoudad are a trophy species and an alternative to high-cost indigenous wild sheep hunts. But at what cost? Are we willing to lose native desert bighorns in Texas and replace them with a non-native invasive goat-like alternative? This is what is at stake.   Aoudad females can breed twice a year and usually give birth to twins. Compared to the desert bighorn ewe's once-a-year and normal single lamb, desert bighorns are at the wrong end of the reproductive dynamic. And, like feral hogs, aoudad outcompete native bighorns, mule deer, and even domestic stock in the arid and fragile habitat they inhabit. As some Texas biologists have stated, “aoudad can eat rocks and thrive on them.”   So, what can be done? WSF recently adopted a policy to prohibit the promotion of (exotic) aoudad hunting in our Award programs, publications, messaging, raffles, and conventions. Is this enough?  In this episode, Sheep Fever co-host and WSF President & CEO Gray N. As part of BYU-Idaho's Summer Session Devotional Recommendations, we're featuring “Love Thy God and Thy Neighbor" by Sister Reyna I. Aburto, which was delivered on June 4, 2019. Sister Aburto was sustained in April 2017 as the second counselor in the general presidency of the Relief Society, the Church's organization for its six million female members ages 18 and older. Reyna I. Aburto was born in Nicaragua to Noel Blanco and Delbi Cardoza and married Carlos Aburto of Mexico in the Jordan River Utah Temple in 1993. They are both converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they have three children.Reyna I. Aburto says her husband, Carlos, is her “best friend” and her “biggest support,” and they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren. She says two major incidents from her childhood greatly impacted her life: surviving an earthquake that destroyed her home and killed her older brother, and living through a period of civil unrest in Nicaragua in the late 1970s. Through these difficult experiences of loss, uncertainty and fear, she learned relationships, family, love and faith are our most precious possessions. Reyna I. Aburto attended Universidad Centroamericana, where she studied industrial engineering for four years, and holds an AAS degree in computer science from Utah Valley University. In 1989, after going through a difficult time in her life, she was invited by Latter-day Saint missionaries to attend church in California. She was hesitant at first, but recalls feeling safe and at home the moment she stepped into the meetinghouse. A few weeks later, at age 26, she was baptized. She says she has “never stopped marveling at the beauty of the gospel,” calling her membership in the Church a huge privilege and gift. Her family attended Spanish-speaking congregations until 2013, when they began attending their neighborhood English-speaking ward, and she has served extensively in the Relief Society, Young Women, Primary, Sunday School and Scouting organizations in her ward and stake (diocese). She served on the Primary general board from 2012 to 2016, where her responsibilities included coordinating resources for children in the Church with disabilities, involvement in the Scouting program, improving Primary web content and providing trainings to Church leaders in the United States and Mexico. She has worked in the language industry for more than 25 years, balancing work, family and Church responsibilities, and now owns a small translation business with her husband.
