In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sit down with Ed Nabrotzky, CEO of Dot AI, to find out how a new generation of asset tracking technology is reshaping what's possible in logistics, operations, and enterprise strategy. Ed brings decades of experience as an executive and innovator in RF and IoT systems, and now leads Dot Ai at the intersection of artificial intelligence, patented hardware, and cloud-powered platforms. With global supply chains facing continued pressure from disruptions, tariffs, and rising customer expectations, Dot Ai is offering something many enterprises are still chasing: real-time visibility with context. But what sets Dot AI apart from other asset tracking providers is its full-stack approach, which combines AI, RFID, Bluetooth, and proprietary hardware to deliver predictive insights across the entire supply chain. During our conversation, Ed explained how Dot AI's model moves visibility from a passive reporting tool to an active intelligence layer for the business. He also shares the story behind their recent $175 million distribution agreement with Würth Industries, and what that level of demand signals about where the market is headed. We also explore the company's upcoming product rollouts, including ZiM Bridge, new IoT trackers, and a cloud platform built to scale. But what stands out most is Ed's broader vision for the sector. Drawing from past ventures and academic research, he reflects on what it takes to build resilient, tech-forward operations in a world increasingly shaped by automation, connectivity, and real-time data. How do we turn all that complexity into something simple and actionable? And what can other founders, tech leaders, and supply chain decision-makers learn from the Dot AI playbook? As always, I'll leave you with a question. As AI increasingly penetrates the physical world, are we doing enough to make our systems not only more innovative but also more transparent and accountable? Let me know your thoughts.

Madeleine Mickeleit speaks with Soroush Khandouzi, Cloud Solution Engineer at KNF, and Florian Stein, Domain Lead for Cloud Transformation and Data Infrastructure at b.telligent. The focus is on a joint IIoT project for pump lifetime monitoring, showing how traditional mechanical engineering companies are using intelligent data to future-proof their products – from edge integration to a scalable cloud setup.Podcast SummaryLifetime monitoring, predictive maintenance, and edge integration – how KNF is driving digitalization in mechanical engineering This episode explores a real-world digitalization project by pump manufacturer KNF, developed together with IoT partner b.telligent. The goal: replace manual testing and documentation with an automated system for long-term pump monitoring – powered by an edge-to-cloud architecture based on Azure IoT and custom-built Data Acquisition Controllers (DAC). The challenge: Until now, key parameters like pressure, temperature, and current were recorded manually – sometimes daily, and over several years. With four production sites worldwide, fragmented systems made consistent evaluation nearly impossible. The solution: A scalable IoT infrastructure built on Azure IoT Edge, near-real-time data transmission, a burst mode for high-frequency measurements (up to 10 kHz), and visualization in Grafana. In addition to automating centralized testing for more than 1,500 pumps, the system enables cross-site monitoring, AI-driven analysis, and predictive maintenance. The key insight: Data is not just collected – it's made actionable in real time, enabling faster development cycles, higher product quality, and entirely new service offerings. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to scale IIoT projects – from R&D to testing and production.

The "MobileViews 570" podcast, featuring Todd Ogasawara and Dr. Jon Westfall on July 13th, 2025, tackles a crucial theme: "Die by the IoT". This isn't just a catchy title; it's a deep dive into the frustrating reality of smart devices becoming obsolete due to company decisions. John Westfall shared his dismay over Belkin's WeMo smart home devices, including a light switch he uses, losing support on January 31st, 2026, less than three years after some models were last sold. He suspects a recent sale he took advantage of was due to its impending discontinuation. This echoes his prior experience with iHome ISP5 smart plugs, whose service was discontinued years ago, though they luckily retained functionality via Apple HomeKit compatibility. Todd resonated with this, recalling a sub-$50 purple NAS-like device that became inaccessible when its cloud service was unexpectedly shut down. Both hosts strongly agreed with the sentiment of an Ars Technica article, "Belkin shows tech firms getting too comfortable with bricking customers stuff," expressing their frustration with the dependency on cloud-based services and the expectation that products should last more than two or two and a half years. They also noted that even major players like Microsoft (Azure IoT) and Google (Cloud IoT) have been closing their IoT services for developers, leaving developers in a tough spot. A potential solution, as suggested by John, could be for companies to release the code for discontinued devices to the "geeky IoT community" for ongoing support. Beyond the looming threat of device obsolescence, Todd and John explored the evolving landscape of AI and exciting new gadgets. Todd discussed Perplexity's Comet AI browser, noting its current requirement for a $200/month Perplexity subscription for full access, though a waitlist for a free version exists. They lamented the challenge of discerning the utility of various AI services like Copilot, Gemini, and ChatGPT due to their constantly changing and inconsistent features. Todd primarily uses Google's Gemini, which he recently leveraged to find a "way fun" method to import a photo of his line drawing into Procreate for digital coloring underneath the lines. John, on a more creative note, is co-authoring a musical titled "Happy Apocalypse" with AI. He also highlighted the practical application of AI, using his Plod Note Pin (or transcribing Teams recordings via Plod) to summarize dissertation student meetings, proving highly useful for both himself and the student's progress reports. The podcast also delved into some compelling new hardware. John enthusiastically shared his experience with the Kobo Libra Color 2 e-reader, which boasts a color E Ink display, a stylus (sold separately), and native connectivity to Google Drive and Dropbox, offering a flexible, non-Amazon alternative to his old Kindle Oasis. He particularly praised the stylus's paper-like feel on the E Ink display, with low latency, making it ideal for note-taking, marking up, and highlighting. Meanwhile, Todd acquired a low-cost Arturia MiniLab 3 MIDI controller, a USB-C powered device with drum pads, sliders, knobs, and velocity-sensitive keys, which works well with GarageBand. John also recently picked up the Wand Company Star Trek Original Series Tricorder, noting its high quality, functional disks, and voice recorder. Other brief mentions included Todd's anticipation for iPad OS 26's public beta, his past experiences with the Microsoft Spot Watch, John's inexplicable phone time zone glitch, Todd's interest in an E Ink touchpad concept for computer keyboards, and his fondness for the now-removed MacBook Pro Touch Bar. The episode wrapped up with the hosts looking forward to future tech discussions and adventures.

A new global challenge is looking for sustainable and innovative solutions to reinvent instrument transformers Arteche, a global manufacturer of electrical equipment with presence in over 127 countries, has joined forces with ennomotive, the leading engineering innovation platform, to improve the sustainability of instrument transformers. Arteche's instrument transformers, widely used in power grids around the world, use an insulation system based on paper impregnated with dielectric oil. This is a technically efficient solution, with decades of proven reliability, but it brings an environmental challenge: During manufacturing, to properly impregnate the insulating paper, an "excess" volume of oil is needed, and it remains "free" in the equipment. Seeking innovative solutions Through this open challenge, Arteche and ennomotive invite solvers and tech. companies from around the world to propose innovative solutions that significantly reduce or eliminate free oil in Transformers. Proposals may include new insulating materials, alternative technologies, or modifications to manufacturing processes to achieve these goals. A call looking for global engineering talent This challenge is open to engineers, startups, technology centres, and universities worldwide with experience in electrical design, insulating materials, electrical equipment development, and industrial sustainability. Arteche, the seeker, offers cash prizes for the top proposals submitted by individual solvers, and funding for selected companies to conduct a pilot, in addition to becoming a part of its innovation ecosystem. Professionals and organisations interested in participating must register at ennomotive.com, join the Arteche challenge, and submit their proposals before July 27th, 2025. Ken Ehrman is the founder and CEO of Halo Collar, the leading GPS dog containment system that's revolutionizing pet safety. With a background in IoT and a history of building tech companies—including taking one public in 1999—Ken teamed up with celebrity dog behaviorist Cesar Millan to create a next-generation “invisible fence.” Since launching in 2018, Halo has quadrupled sales, surpassed $100 million in annual revenue, and sold over 200,000 collars, all while giving pet owners the freedom to create a “backyard everywhere they go.” On this episode we talk about: Ken's entrepreneurial journey from yearbook ad sales to founding and scaling multiple tech companies The early days of IoT, RFID, and what it was like to take a company public with just $3 million in annual revenue How the idea for Halo Collar was sparked by a real family tragedy—and why the market was ready for a better solution The power of partnerships: how Ken connected with Cesar Millan to bring dog expertise and credibility to the product Why Halo's GPS-powered, AI-enabled collar is more than a tracker—it's a portable, wireless fence you can set up anywhere The business lessons behind Halo's exponential growth: leveraging existing demand, innovating on proven products, and solving real pain points for pet owners Smart scaling: how Halo used a direct-to-consumer model, negative inventory, and global fulfillment to fuel rapid expansion The importance of product-market fit, recurring revenue, and building a brand that dog owners trust Ken's framework for evaluating new business ideas and the difference between “nice-to-have” and “need-to-have” products Top 3 Takeaways Innovate Where Demand Exists: Halo succeeded by improving an existing solution (the invisible fence) in a massive, established market, rather than trying to create demand from scratch. Solve Real Problems, Not Just Sell Features: The best products address urgent needs—like keeping pets safe—rather than relying on “nice-to-have” technology. Smart Partnerships and Operations Win: Strategic alliances (like with Cesar Millan), creative fulfillment, and a focus on customer experience enabled Halo to scale quickly and efficiently. Notable Quotes “What's the best solution that there could be? That's always my mindset, whether I'm selling yearbook ads or building a tech company.” “People are already buying fences for their dogs. We just made it portable, smarter, and safer.” “If you can find things people are already buying, you're not pushing a boulder uphill—you're meeting a real need.” Connect with Ken Ehrman: Website: halocollar.com

While the satellite connected car has long been seen as a future market for the satellite industry, it hasn't broken through into the mainstream yet. But recent developments in standards and technology are bringing this closer to reality. This week's episode features two experts in vehicle connectivity from BMW Group, Olaf Eckart and Georg Schmitt, for a discussion on the path to integrating satellite connectivity into vehicles.  Eckart and Schmitt explain the use cases where satellite makes sense for vehicles, some of the challenges specific to the automotive industry, and the roadmap for integrating satellite into vehicles from narrowband, wideband, to broadband. The first mass market applications with non-terrestrial network (NTN), narrowband IoT applications are expected to be deployed from 2027 on.  They are part of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), and the discussion covers vehicle demonstrations that 5GAA recently hosted with satellite companies in Paris. The automotive industry is looking to benefit from the work that has been done to integrate satellite into mobile networks, and Eckhart and Schmitt talk about how standards have driven new momentum in the work between automakers, MNOs, and satellite players.

Agility can often get framed as driving massive transformation—but sometimes it's the milliseconds that matter. When every digital moment counts, small gains in speed and efficiency can have a disproportionately large impact on customer lifetime value and brand loyalty. If you could speed up every digital interaction your customers have with your brand by a full second, what would that be worth to your business?Today we're going to talk about how even seemingly minor improvements in speed and performance can have outsized impact on customer experience—and revenue. To help me discuss this topic, I'd like to welcome Jaxon Repp, Field CTO at Harper. About Jaxon ReppJaxon Repp, Field CTO at Harper, has over 25 years of experience architecting, designing, and developing enterprise software. He is the founder of three technology startups and has consulted with multiple Fortune 500 companies on IoT and Digital Transformation initiatives. A partially-reformed developer, he understands what it's like to wrestle with technology instead of benefiting from it, and believes passionately that if the Jetsons never had an episode where a config file error brought down the food-o-matic, it surely should not be a problem now.
