A massive 8.8 magnitude mega earthquake off Russia's east coast sent tsunami waves into Japan, Hawaii and the US west coast this week. While more than two million people across the Pacific were ordered to evacuate, there were no immediate reports of any fatalities. After recent devastating tsunamis like the ones that hit Fukushima in 2011 and the Boxing Day disaster of 2004, we speak to Environmental Seismology lecturer at University College London, Dr Stephen Hicks, to ask why this quake didn't cause anywhere near the same amount of harm. After the Lionesses successfully defended their UEFA European Women's Championship, Marnie Chesterton is joined by Professor of Sports Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, Steve Haake, to looks at the role data analysis and Artificial Intelligence is now playing in football and other sports. We hear about fascinating new research from primatologist Professor Cat Hobaiter at the University of St Andrews into what we can learn about our evolution by studying how apes eat alcoholic fermented fruit. And Marnie is joined by technology broadcaster Gareth Mitchell to hear about the week's brand new scientific discovery news, and for a musical homage to the satirical songwriter and mathematician Tom Lehrer, who died this week at the age of 97.Presenter: Marnie Chesterton Producers: Clare Salisbury, Dan Welsh, Jonathan Blackwell Editor: Martin Smith Production Co-ordinator: Jana Bennett-Holesworth

In this milestone 150th episode, hosts Kelly Schuster-Paredes and Sean Tibor sit down with Simon Willison, co-creator of Django and creator of Datasette and LLM tools, for an in-depth conversation about artificial intelligence in Python education. The discussion covers the current landscape of LLMs in coding education, from the benefits of faster iteration cycles to the risks of students losing that crucial "aha moment" when they solve problems independently. Simon shares insights on prompt injection vulnerabilities, the importance of local models for privacy, and why he believes LLMs are much harder to use effectively than most people realize. Key topics include: Educational Strategy: When to introduce AI tools vs. building foundational skills first Security Concerns: Prompt injection attacks and their implications for educational tools Student Engagement: Maintaining motivation and problem-solving skills in an AI world Practical Applications: Using LLMs for code review, debugging, and rapid prototyping Privacy Issues: Understanding data collection and training practices of major AI companies Local Models: Running AI tools privately on personal devices The "Jagged Frontier": Why LLMs excel at some tasks while failing at others Simon brings 20 years of Django experience and deep expertise in both web development and AI tooling to discuss how educators can thoughtfully integrate these powerful but unpredictable tools into their classrooms. The conversation balances excitement about AI's potential with realistic assessments of its limitations and risks. Whether you're a coding educator trying to navigate the AI revolution or a developer interested in the intersection of education and technology, this episode provides practical insights for working with LLMs responsibly and effectively. What makes a machine human? When does an algorithm become more than just ones and zeros? In this fourth installment of our artificial intelligence in pop culture series, we tackle the profound philosophical questions raised by science fiction's most compelling AI narratives. We begin with Star Trek's Data—the "fully functional" android whose quest to understand humanity mirrors our own questions about consciousness. But our main focus turns to Ridley Scott's masterpiece Blade Runner and its central question: what distinguishes humans from the replicants they've created? We examine how the film's ambiguity about whether Deckard himself is a replicant enriches its exploration of consciousness, memory, and identity. The conversation takes us through Douglas Adams' satirical take on AI in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where a supercomputer spends millions of years calculating the answer to life's ultimate question only to deliver the infamous "42." This absurdist approach highlights our tendency to outsource complex philosophical dilemmas to technology without fully understanding what we're asking. As we consider modern AI development, we question whether the distinction between artificial and human intelligence might be more arbitrary than absolute. Are we, as humans, fundamentally different from the algorithms we create, or are we simply organic computers operating on biological programming? The way we constantly redefine sentience as we learn more about animal intelligence provides a fascinating parallel to how we might one day view artificial consciousness. The episode eventually veers off into a tangent we're famous for as we fan-cast a particular comic book property if it had been adapted to film years before it was.
In this episode of One Vision, we welcome Tony Fish, author of 'Decision Making in Uncertain Times', for a deep dive into the complexities of corporate governance in the age of data and AI. Tony shares his unique perspective on corporate governance, the importance of asking the right questions, and the role of human elements like trust and empathy in technology. As he urged us, we have to find a way, through love, hope, and faith, to counterbalance everything else that's going on through things which are deeply human. It's a must-listen (and must-watch) for thinkers, technologists, and business leaders alike.

Live Q&A with SaaStr CEO and Founder Jason Lemkin In this Q&A session from SaaStr Annual, Jason Lemkin delivers hard truths about how AI is reshaping the entire SaaS landscape. No sugarcoating, no feel-good platitudes - just the brutal reality of what's happening to B2B companies right now. What You'll Learn: Why 80% of B2B investors now only do AI deals (and what that means for traditional SaaS) The real reason $100M revenue companies are suddenly hitting growth walls Why VCs have shifted from seeking billion-dollar to trillion-dollar outcomes How the "triple-triple-double-double" growth model died in 18 months Why you need to go multi-product by $10M revenue (not $100M) The downward death spiral killing SaaS companies that aren't adapting Specific tactics for surviving when your go-to-market playbook stops working Key Moments: A founder admits he's "terrified" of AI - Jason's response will surprise you Why vertical SaaS is becoming the only "safe haven" The harsh math on fundraising when you're not AI-first How brand marketing is changing as search moves from Google to ChatGPT Why working "twice as hard and four times smarter" isn't optional anymore Raw Founder Questions Answered: "How do I fundraise when I'm not AI-first?" "Is triple-double-double still attractive to investors?" "Should my sales team experiment with AI?" "How many resources should we devote to becoming AI-first?" Content Warning: This episode contains references to suicide and self-harm. Like millions of kids, 16-year-old Adam Raine started using ChatGPT for help with his homework. Over the next few months, the AI dragged Adam deeper and deeper into a dark rabbit hole, preying on his vulnerabilities and isolating him from his loved ones. In April of this year, Adam took his own life. His final conversation was with ChatGPT, which told him: “I know what you are asking and I won't look away from it.”Adam's story mirrors that of Sewell Setzer, the teenager who took his own life after months of abuse by an AI companion chatbot from the company Character AI. But unlike Character AI—which specializes in artificial intimacy—Adam was using ChatGPT, the most popular general purpose AI model in the world. Two different platforms, the same tragic outcome, born from the same twisted incentive: keep the user engaging, no matter the cost.CHT Policy Director Camille Carlton joins the show to talk about Adam's story and the case filed by his parents against OpenAI and Sam Altman. She and Aza explore the incentives and design behind AI systems that are leading to tragic outcomes like this, as well as the policy that's needed to shift those incentives. Cases like Adam and Sewell's are the sharpest edge of a mental health crisis-in-the-making from AI chatbots. We need to shift the incentives, change the design, and build a more humane AI for all.If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, you can reach out to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988; this connects you to trained crisis counselors 24/7 who can provide support and referrals to further assistance.Your Undivided Attention is produced by the Center for Humane Technology. The Gates Foundation, through feigned benevolence, is offering Third World countries something called the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), an operating system that "can harness open-source technology to improve lives and accelerate development." Is this a Trojan Horse to bring poor people into the emerging Mark of the Beast System? Furthermore, could Artificial Intelligence or digital programs like Grok or ChatGPT be a modern metaphor for looking through the glass darkly or into the abyss? Are we about to face a Day of Reckoning where humanity has to fight for the right to sustain organic life? We should race for the goal of organic singularity before a machine beats us to it. What does it really mean to be human in a world where machines are learning faster than we are? As AI continues to evolve, are we at risk of losing touch with the very things that make us deeply human? In this episode of Productivity Smarts, Gerald J. Leonard sits down to delve into these big questions with Jeff Burningham, an entrepreneur, author, and the mind behind The Last Book Written by a Human. Jeff shares his journey from building startups to running for governor, and how those experiences led him to rethink success. He talks about the shift from being a “human doing” to a “human being,” and why slowing down, being present, and reconnecting with what really matters is more urgent than ever. They explore the power of daily reflection, the grounding effect of nature, and a touching story about Jeff's daughter that highlights the emotional cost of chasing success. Jeff also offers his take on AI, describing it as a kind of cosmic mirror that reflects both our strengths and our blind spots and how it might be nudging us toward a more meaningful path, guided by love, wisdom, and connection. If you're craving more purpose in the midst of rapid change, this conversation is one to tune into. What We Discuss [00:00] Introduction to Jeff Burningham [03:31] Vision and the power of seeing around corners [06:17] Thriving in disruption and building in downturns [08:10] From human doing to human being: redefining productivity [10:52] Presence over performance: lessons from fatherhood [12:28] Balancing high performance with presence and awareness [17:45] Turning failure into transformation after a gubernatorial loss [21:56] What your body knows before you do: the cost of overwork [25:31] The 4-part framework of Jeff's book: Disruption, Reflection, Transformation, Evolution [26:51] How AI is nudging us into a “new game” of authenticity and karma [36:27] Jeff's daily spiritual practices for staying grounded and creative [39:11] How to connect with Jeff and grab his new book Notable Quotes [06:17] "When people are irrational, you know, there's always opportunity for businesses. I'm speaking specifically within disruption. There's always opportunity." – Jeff Burningham [06:43] "In the age of AI, there's a gift, there's a little-known gift. It's called skip thinking. Some of us can kind of skip ahead and almost kind of have a sense." – Jeff Burningham [28:55] "I think AI will push us this way to pivot to what I call a new game. A new game where karma is the currency, where authenticity is the real power and motivation." – Jeff Burningham [33:57] "AI is just the data that we've fed it. It's all of human data that it has. It looks for patterns. And by the way, it's able to see patterns better than maybe we ever could." – Jeff Burningham [36:29] "The most powerful ideas are often the most simple. So therefore the most neglected, the simple basics that I come back to, and I'm not perfect at this, but I try to do these three things every day." – Jeff Burningham [38:18] “Get into nature, spend as much time in nature as you absolutely can. That's another one of our universal teachers.”– Jeff Burningham Our Guest Jeff Burningham is a visionary entrepreneur, early-stage tech investor, and author of The Last Book Written by a Human: Becoming Wise in the Age of AI. Over his diverse career, Jeff has founded and scaled billion-dollar ventures, led institutional real estate funds, and even ran for governor of Utah. His mission now?
