In this episode, I sit down with Gina, an older detransitioner with a compelling story that spans decades. We delve into her journey, beginning with her childhood experiences of gender dysphoria in the 1970s, her eventual transition in her 50s, and her decision to detransition in 2023. Gina shares her early crush on a girl and how that shaped her understanding of her identity, leading her to believe she needed to become a boy to express her feelings. We explore the complexities of her transition, including the overwhelming effects of testosterone on her sex drive and how it altered her sexual orientation, making her attracted to men for the first time. Gina reflects on the societal pressures surrounding gender and beauty, and how her past experiences of trauma influenced her decisions. We also discuss the impact of her identity on her relationship with her daughter, highlighting the importance of communication and understanding in parenting. Throughout our conversation, we aim to unpack the nuances of identity, the role of societal expectations, and the emotional turmoil that can accompany such profound life changes. In 1970, at the age of ten, Gina traversed a hill to the neighboring ranch to confess to her friend that she was supposed to be a boy. Forty years later, she “transitioned.” After thirteen years of living as a “trans-man,” she had an awakening that inspired her to begin detransitioning. Now in radical acceptance of her womanhood, she is recovering. Gina's goal is to create a healing space in the country for female detransitioners, crossing a different kind of hill this time, to a new ranch. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Kristopher Kaliebe, a child, adult, and forensic psychiatrist known for his critical stance on “gender-affirming care.” We delve into the complexities surrounding the current landscape of gender identity and the implications for mental health care. Dr. Kaliebe shares his journey into this contentious field, highlighting his concerns about the medicalization of gender dysphoria and the potential harm it poses to vulnerable youth. We explore the concept of "illness identity," where young people may gravitate towards labels that define their struggles, often leading to over-diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Dr. Kaliebe emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuances behind statements like "I feel like a woman" or "I feel like a boy," urging listeners to consider the psychological factors at play. We also discuss the troubling trend of social transition among children and the societal pressures that contribute to this phenomenon.Throughout our conversation, we question the integrity of professional organizations that have adopted advocacy over science, leading to a lack of diverse perspectives in psychiatric practice. This episode aims to shed light on the urgent need for a more balanced dialogue in mental health care, encouraging professionals and parents alike to critically evaluate the current approaches to gender identity and treatment.Kristopher Kaliebe, MD is a Professor of Psychiatry at University of South Florida, in Tampa Florida. He is Board Certified in Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. Dr. Hannah Spier, a psychiatrist from Zurich, Switzerland, calls herself an "anti-feminist psychiatrist.” We delve into the complexities of women's mental health, particularly how feminist ideologies can lead to feelings of inadequacy and burnout. Hannah shares her insights from years of treating women who often find themselves stuck in therapy, grappling with anxiety and unfulfilled desires, particularly around relationships and motherhood. We explore the concept of dating with intention, emphasizing the importance for women of knowing what we want while we still retain the advantages of youth. Hannah discusses the common patterns she sees in her patients, such as the pressure to achieve academically while neglecting emotional needs, which can lead to a cycle of anxiety and dissatisfaction. We also touch on the societal expectations placed on women and how these can create a disconnect between their true desires and their life choices.Throughout our conversation, we challenge the notion of self-esteem and discuss the role of gratitude in overcoming resentment. Hannah argues that understanding the realities of both women's and men's experiences can help shift perspectives and foster healthier relationships. This episode aims to provoke thought about the choices women make and the societal narratives that shape those choices, ultimately encouraging listeners to reflect on their own paths and desires.Hannah Spier is a Norwegian-born medical doctor trained in Psychiatry in Norway and Switzerland, with a degree in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from the University of Zurich. Now based in Zurich with her husband and three children, she launched the Psychobabble publication and podcast in October 2022 to challenge postmodern influences and champion traditional values in the mental health field.YouTube: @psychobabblewithspierPsychobabble Substack 00:00 Start[00:01:27] Anti-feminist psychiatrist explained.[00:07:26] Biological clock and priorities shift.[00:11:08] Success redefined for mothers.[00:14:06] Choices and leverage for women.[00:20:18] Biological realities of women's choices.[00:25:46] Antidote to resentment is gratitude.[00:30:00] Narcissism and self-perception.[00:34:48] Resentment in motherhood and relationships.[00:36:10] Women's relationship goals and challenges.[00:43:34] Choosing the right partner.[00:48:05] Evolutionary psychology and motherhood.[00:52:17] Dating with intention.[00:54:23] Postmodernism's impact on self-improvement.[01:02:27] Expecting more from ourselves.[01:03:21] Flaws in psychiatric treatment.[01:10:06] Maternal instincts and self-care.[01:15:36] Lies of feminism.[01:16:43] Vulnerability and relationship dynamics.[01:22:01] Confusion between love and passion.[01:28:06] Healing from domestic violence.[01:30:14] Maternal instincts and nurturing energy.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. In this powerful episode, I speak with William Allen, a man who lived for 30 years as a “transgender woman” named Maggie before detransitioning between 2020-2023. William shares his remarkable life story, from his earliest childhood memories of gender dysphoria through his transition in 1993, to his religious awakening and eventual detransition. His newly released book, "Not Man Enough to Be a Woman," details this extraordinary journey.William begins by sharing the viral social media post that caught my attention on Detrans Awareness Day. He then takes us back to his childhood in the 1960s, where despite appearing as a typical boy who played with neighborhood friends and joined the Boy Scouts, he secretly wished he had been born a girl and would dress in his mother's clothes when alone. He describes how throughout his youth, he couldn't understand why he had these feelings, finding no answers even in psychology textbooks during college. William shares the story of his first marriage, when his gender dysphoria temporarily subsided during the initial years of falling in love, only to return "with a vengeance" later, ultimately destroying his marriage.By 1993, William began hormone therapy, had his beard removed through electrolysis, and underwent surgeries. He details the physical changes from estrogen, the workplace transition, and how he was able to "pass" in society as a woman for many years.William speaks candidly about his life as Maggie. He describes a deathbed reconciliation with his estranged father in 2015 and the conversation decades earlier that gave his book its title - when his father told him he wasn't "man enough to be a woman."The turning point in William's story came in 2020 when he experienced a profound religious transformation that changed his perspective on his life and identity. This led to his decision to detransition, a three-year process that included saving money, finding a surgeon willing to perform a mastectomy, legal name changes, and rebuilding relationships.William's story raises profound questions: What happens when a false identity embraced for decades no longer aligns with one's deepest values? After living thirty years as Maggie, William's return to his birth identity offers a rare window into the complexities of gender dysphoria, transition, and detransition that few have experienced over such an extended period. His story challenges simplistic narratives while offering compassion for those struggling with gender identity issues.William Allen struggled with gender identity disorder from childhood in the 1960s. Hiding his condition throughout his teenage, college, and young adult years, his obsession only grew stronger, eventually ruining his marriage. He began his “transition” in 1993. After hormones, beard removal, voice coaching, and surgery, he "passed" and settled into a successful life, until he rediscovered his faith. He completed his detransition in 2023, after 30 years living as a “transwoman.” William now speaks out against the transgender movement's deceptions and intentional targeting of children. Today my guest is Arnold Cantu, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist with experience in school social work, private practice, and community mental health. What made Arnold drop out of his doctoral program despite his passion for academic and clinical research, even as he became a published author well ahead of his classmates? Our conversation explores the challenging dynamics Arnold faced as a doctoral student who didn't perfectly align with certain ideological expectations, despite his progressive research interests critiquing the biomedical model of mental health. With seven years of clinical experience before entering his program in 2021, Arnold anticipated some political slant but was surprised by the extent of ideological conformity enforced. What pressures do students face when they don't enthusiastically embrace every aspect of critical social justice ideology? How thin is the line between education and indoctrination? What happens when a student defines "anti-oppressive" using a dictionary definition rather than approved academic literature?Arnold shares how he found himself under scrutiny not for being confrontational in class, but simply for not demonstrating sufficient enthusiasm for certain frameworks. Despite being a Mexican-American clinician focused on improving mental health services for immigrant communities, his approach wasn't considered progressive enough. The situation escalated when Arnold shared a link about academic freedom in a class survey, prompting professors to call meetings to discuss his values and commitment to social justice. He eventually withdrew in 2024 after what he describes as "one of the lowest years of my life," finding much greater happiness returning to clinical work.We discuss the paradox Arnold observed between an allegedly "anti-oppressive" framework that created an oppressive academic environment and the challenges of intellectual diversity in social work education. Despite leaving his program, Arnold has continued his scholarly work, publishing books and articles critiquing the medical model of mental health. This conversation raises important questions about the future of social work education, the tension between truth-seeking and political activism in academia, and whether students with diverse perspectives can thrive in programs with increasingly rigid ideological expectations.Look for a future episode where Arnold and I will dive deeper into his critique of the medical model and how certain "progressive" approaches to mental health may paradoxically reinforce oppressive frameworks.Arnoldo Cantú, LCSW is a clinical social worker and psychotherapist with experience in school social work, private practice, and currently working in community mental health seeing children, adolescents, families, and adults. You may have recently seen episode 1 in the new docuseries "Uncomfortable Truths." Today I'm joined by its filmmaker, Travis Brown, who was drawn to investigate gender ideology after noticing many traits it shared in common with the controlling religious environment he grew up in.We discuss the historical context of gender transition protocols and the questionable ethics of current practices. Travis highlights the alarming trend of rushing into medical procedures without adequate understanding or consideration of the long-term consequences, especially for minors. From his libertarian perspective, he emphasizes the need to balance personal freedom with the importance of waiting periods and psychological evaluations before undergoing irreversible surgeries. Meanwhile, I argue that these procedures should be outlawed altogether, reframing the debate from one of individual rights to one of professional ethical responsibilities.Travis Brown is a visiting fellow at Danube Institute, content producer for Genspect, the president of a non-profit, and an international filmmaker and commentator known for his thought-provoking docuseries 'The Woke Reformation,' which features Peter Boghossian, Douglas Murray, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Vivek Ramaswamy, and other brave intellectuals who demolish and then offer a positive alternative to Woke culture. Travis frequently engages with contemporary cultural issues, exploring themes like identity, belief, and the importance of meaning through his work. He travels internationally to screen his work and engage in public discussions.Travis is the president of The Signal Education Project (SEP), a non-profit that shines a light on how dogmatic thinking distorts the truth and fractures our relationships. Through SEP, Travis explores how strict ideologies shape our view of reality, the effect this has on our conversations, and what it does to relationships and society as a whole. SEP's current project investigates the contentious topic of gender identity in the upcoming docuseries Uncomfortable Truths: The Reality of Gender Identity Ideology.Donate to support the series on GiveSendGo.00:00 Start[00:02:03] Trans ideology and its impact.[00:03:33] Identity and oppression in upbringing.[00:08:06] Oppression and authoritarian tendencies.[00:12:00] Compassionate perspectives on trans issues.[00:16:18] Conveyor belt of transition.[00:19:02] Communicating with trans-identified youth.[00:22:27] Language and its implications.[00:27:03] Interviewing controversial figures.[00:31:17] Buck Angel's evolving perspectives.[00:35:55] Moral psychology and fear.[00:38:31] Importance of opposing views.[00:41:41] Concerns about social media influence.[00:46:53] Medical autonomy and restrictions.[00:48:10] Ethical dilemmas of technology.[00:53:31] Rebuilding parent-child relationships.[00:58:04] Spiritual needs in society.[01:01:40] Pursuing creativity after activism.[01:03:13] Content quality in storytelling.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Greg Bottaro, a Catholic psychologist and founder of the Catholic Psych Institute. We delve into the complexities of identity, particularly in the context of gender dysphoria, and explore the importance of compassion in addressing these sensitive issues. Dr. Bottaro emphasizes the need for a blueprint for understanding the human person, which he believes is rooted in Catholic teachings. For a deep dive into this blueprint check out our other conversation in episode 152.We discuss how the Catholic vision of the human person can inform our approach to mental health and well-being. Dr. Bottaro shares insights on the unity of body and spirit, and how this understanding can help individuals who feel at odds with their identity. We also touch on the historical role of the Catholic Church in preserving knowledge and culture, and how this legacy can guide contemporary discussions about ethics and psychology.Throughout our conversation, we aim to explore critical questions: How can we approach those struggling with their identity with both compassion and truth? What does it mean to have a healthy understanding of personhood? And how can the principles of Catholicism provide a framework for healing and thriving in today's complex world? Join us as we navigate these profound topics and seek to understand the intersection of faith, reason, and mental health.Dr. Greg Bottaro is a Catholic psychologist, founder of the CatholicPsych Institute and creator of the CatholicPsych Model of Applied Personalism (CPMAP). He received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, and works to integrate Catholic philosophy and theology with relevant psychology. He leads the CatholicPsych Institute's mission to, "Create a Catholic Standard for Mental Health."Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Bottaro discerned a religious vocation with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFRs). He lived in the Bronx for four years following the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi. Under the mentorship of Fr. Benedict Groeschel, this experience formed him in the spirituality of Abandonment to Divine Providence, which he now integrates with his model of psychology, along with the discernment of God's will he learned from Fr. Benedict. In 2012, Dr. Bottaro returned to New York as a psychologist and founded the CatholicPsych Institute, which has continued to grow and serve clients around the world. What does Catholic theology have to offer the field of counseling psychology? Catholic psychologist Dr. Greg Bottaro joins me to explore the concept of the "blueprint of the human being" according to Catholic thought, emphasizing that we are made in the image of God, which inherently involves a relational aspect. Dr. Bottaro outlines five essential marks of relationship that shape our identity: being made in God's image, being formed in relationships, experiencing wounds in relationships, finding healing through relationships, and ultimately being destined for eternal relationship with God.We discuss how these principles extend into family life and the ideal structures for nurturing healthy relationships. I ask Dr. Bottaro about the common perception that Catholicism promotes repression, and he offers a nuanced perspective, highlighting the importance of authentic human experience and the developmental journey toward becoming our best selves in right relation with all things.Throughout our dialogue, we aim to uncover how understanding our relational nature can lead to deeper healing and growth, both personally and within our families. This episode invites listeners to reflect on their own relationships and the transformative power of connection in the context of faith and psychology.Dr. Most recently he launched the CPMAP Certification to train others in their model of integrated accompaniment. He lives in Connecticut with his wife Barbra and their seven children. 00:00 Start[00:02:09] Catholic view of human being.[00:07:42] Eternal relationship and purpose.[00:08:14] The blueprint of the person.[00:15:48] Transcending space and time.[00:18:06] Inner goodness and relationships.[00:21:39] Corrective emotional experiences in relationships.[00:25:10] Objective truth and beauty.[00:30:31] The path to moral action.[00:33:25] Integrated approach to healing.[00:38:35] Communication skills for children.[00:41:29] Mirroring in parenting.[00:48:02] Growth through therapeutic experiences.[00:52:57] Purgatory as God's mercy.[00:54:05] Mercy in life and death.[00:58:57] Suffering and knowledge in purgatory.[01:03:39] Trust in God's mercy.[01:06:30] Loving God Through Neighborly Actions.[01:10:33] Marriage and maturity challenges.[01:15:57] Transcendent relationships in therapy.[01:18:58] Gender craze impact on families.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. The co-authors of "Letters in Black and White" found common ground in their frustration with America's polarized racial discourse. Our conversation explored provocative ideas like "Blackness as oppression"—a concept that shook Wink's foundational beliefs about identity—and Jen's jarring return to an America where diversity training often stifled genuine dialogue. We challenged simplistic narratives of "privilege," examined the controversial topic of reparations (with Wink offering a compelling case for Black agency over victimhood), and questioned how society's racial scripts influence our thinking. Throughout our discussion, we highlighted the power of curiosity and personal storytelling to bridge seemingly insurmountable divides—inviting listeners to reconsider their own perspectives on race and identity in America.Winkfield Twyman and Jennifer Richmond are co-authors of Letters in Black and White: A New Correspondence on Race in America.A former law professor and current author, Winkfield (Wink) Franklin Twyman, Jr. is a southern writer from a small-town suburb outside of Richmond, Virginia. Levi Hayes is an artist and writer eight months into his deeply personal journey of detransitioning who recently decided to file a complaint against the therapist who “affirmed” his “gender identity” rather than treating his trauma. We delve into the often-overlooked trauma that accompanies both the transition process and the aftermath of living a transitioned life. Levi opens up about the emotional toll of navigating societal expectations, the pressure to maintain an illusion, and the regret that can follow such significant life changes. We explore the complexities of Levi's experiences, from his childhood in a rural Midwest town where he faced bullying and rejection, to his adult life marked by impulsive decisions and a search for validation through transition. Levi candidly discusses his encounters with therapists who failed to address the underlying trauma and internalized homophobia that influenced his choices. We also touch on the challenges he faced when filing a complaint against a therapist who affirmed his transition, highlighting the systemic issues within mental health care. My template that Levi used can be found here.Throughout our conversation, we aim to uncover the nuances of identity, the impact of societal pressures, and the importance of addressing trauma in therapeutic settings. Levi's story serves as a powerful reminder of the need for compassion and understanding in discussions about gender identity and mental health.Levi is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and designer with a passion for creative expression. Based in Missouri, he is also a writer and blogger who has transformed his journaling and Written Exposure Therapy practice into a powerful storytelling platform. If you have a son, you need to be aware of the information in today's episode. When he was in sixth grade, Shane Cole discovered sissy hypnosis pornography. A secretive and shameful addiction to this disturbing sexual content impacted his formative years, and ultimately led him to identify as transgender and experiment with cross-sex hormones. But today, he is a health-conscious, detransitioned young man who leads trauma-informed Breathwork workshops and studies Tibetan Buddhism. How did he get here?Shane shares his deeply personal journey of overcoming an addiction to sissy hypnosis pornography — and an alarming message to parents about the prevalence and accessibility of this brainwashing online material. We delve into the emotional turmoil that this type of content can inflict, particularly on young boys, and how it intertwines shame, trauma, and pleasure in a way that can lead to destructive patterns of behavior. Shane explains how this genre of pornography exploits male insecurities and can lead to a distorted sense of identity, including a brief period where he believed he was transgender. We explore the alarming rise of sissy hypnosis content online, particularly among young men, and discuss the implications of this trend for parents and society at large. Shane highlights the importance of understanding the psychological impact of such material, including the cognitive dissonance it creates in sensitive young men who are trying to navigate their identities in a world filled with conflicting messages about masculinity and femininity.Surprisingly, like other detransitioners I've spoken with here, Shane credits his awakening in part to psychedelics. He speaks about how trauma-informed Breathwork, meditation, and other mind-body practices have helped ground him in a new, healthy sense of self.Throughout our discussion, we aim to uncover the underlying factors that contribute to these issues, including societal pressures, the influence of social media, and the lack of open conversations about male sexuality. This episode serves as a wake-up call for parents and listeners to recognize the potential dangers lurking online and the urgent need for dialogue around these topics.Shane Cole is a trauma-informed breathwork facilitator and founder of Inspiratus Breathwork. After studying psychology at the University of Southern California and completing a nine-month, trauma-informed breathwork facilitator training program, he travels the country to musical festivals and retreats teaching breathwork. With Inspiratus, he creates sacred spaces for humans to cultivate purpose, positivity, and presence through his research-backed approach to breathwork. Throughout his life, he struggled with gender dysphoria and an addiction to sissy hypnosis pornography. After traditional talk therapy did not assist or even want to address the issues he faced, he turned to alternative solutions. Using breathwork, meditation, IFS therapy, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and men's work, he was able to free himself from his addiction, come back to his masculinity, and reclaim his innocence. He is now on a mission to bring breathwork practices to clients struggling with gender dysphoria and pornography addiction. I met with Glenna Goldis, a New York-based lawyer with experience in government, fraud investigations, and domestic violence advocacy, to discuss the recent executive orders related to gender ideology. Glenna, who publishes a Substack newsletter called "Bad Facts" about the so-called transgender rights movement, provided her legal expertise on what these orders mean for American families. We covered five key executive orders recently implemented by the Trump administration:1. The day-one order defining biological sex and restoring single-sex spaces2. The order ending gender ideology indoctrination in K-12 schools3. The order protecting children from chemical and surgical procedures4. The military order prioritizing readiness over ideology5. The most recent order protecting women's sportsGlenna and I explored the practical implications of these orders, discussing everything from school bathrooms to military readiness. We delved into important nuances around funding mechanisms, enforcement challenges, and potential loopholes. While Glenna expressed optimism about the orders' potential impact, she helped clarify their actual scope and limitations.A significant portion of our conversation focused on how these orders might affect healthcare providers, insurance coverage, and mental health professionals. As a therapist myself, I took the opportunity to advocate for addressing how "conversion therapy" bans have been weaponized against ethical mental health care. We also discussed the concerning trend of insurance fraud in gender medicine and the potential for increased federal investigations.Glenna shared her work with the Gender Critical Law Society, organizing lawyers to defend professionals who face challenges for maintaining biological reality in their practice. This led to an important discussion about the need for legal support for mental health professionals who want to provide ethical care without fear of losing their licenses.Throughout our conversation, we emphasized the importance of understanding what these orders actually do versus what they're often claimed to do in media coverage. While they represent significant policy changes, their implementation will take time and face various challenges through the court system. This episode provides crucial information for parents, healthcare providers, educators, and anyone concerned about how these executive orders might impact their families and communities. For help learning how to discuss these executive orders and other contentious topics with your trans-identified adolescent or young adult, check out my course and community for concerned parents, ROGD Repair. Having previously run a support group for the wives and girlfriends of men with autogynephilia (AGP), Wildfire Whispers brings a unique perspective on the intersection of AGP and relationships. Are all such men hopelessly self-centered narcissistic fetishists women should run from — or are there ever legitimate reasons a self-respecting woman might stay? Is full recovery from the addictive cycle of autogynephilic fetishism possible for any man, and if so, what needs to change? We explore the cultural taboos surrounding AGP and how their erosion in recent years has led to a surge in openly expressed paraphilic behaviors. We discuss the psychological underpinnings of AGP, including the concept of Peter Pan syndrome and how it manifests in men seeking nurturing and validation from their partners. Wildfire shares her insights on the four stages of AGP, from initial fascination to full transition, and the critical moment when men often name their female alter egos, leading to a split in their identities. This naming process creates a dynamic where the wife feels in competition with an idealized, unattainable version of femininity.Throughout our conversation, we aim to answer pressing questions: What are the implications of AGP for the partners involved? How can women set boundaries and navigate these challenging relationships? And what role does addiction play in the behaviors associated with AGP? Join us as we unpack these themes and offer support for those grappling with similar experiences.Wildfire is a writer who is passionate about women's rights advocacy, empowerment, and protection. Her journey into gender-critical discourse began after she ran an online support group for the wives and partners of AGP men for several years. Initially, she joined the group as a member seeking the same support. Her experiences there deeply moved her to advocate for this often-overlooked group, who frequently struggle to share their stories. Her activism is also shaped by her personal experience of surviving a suicide cluster during her senior year of high school, which tragically claimed the lives of five teenagers. She recognizes the “suicide narrative” as one of the most perilous aspects of gender ideology. Many parents today are disillusioned with the options they see for their adolescents. College often appears to be little more than an expensive four-year summer camp that churns out indoctrinated radicals without any practical skills. But most job options available to uneducated young adults can rightly be considered “dead end.” So what can bright, intellectually driven and motivated young people do to cultivate character and marketable skills that will set them up for a lifetime of success and fulfillment?Enter: The Preparation, an experimental four year program of self-development in which young men choose from a broad range of activities, occupations, and games designed to do just that. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Maxim Smith, an impressive and accomplished young man who is acting as a guinea pig for this program. Designed by Doug Casey in collaboration with Maxim's father, Matthew, the Preparation is intended to be a replacement for the only three routes advertised to young men today - go to college, the military, or a dead-end job.We delve into the shortcomings of traditional college education, discussing how many students find themselves in debt without the skills or job opportunities they anticipated. Maxim shares his journey of exploring alternative paths, emphasizing the importance of gaining practical skills and real-life experiences over the conventional college route. We explore the concept of becoming a "Renaissance man" and how The Preparation encourages young men to develop a diverse skill set through hands-on activities, such as EMT training, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and even working as a wildland firefighter. Maxim highlights the value of adaptability, character, and social skills that come from engaging in various experiences, contrasting this with the often disconnected and theoretical nature of college education.Throughout our conversation, we address critical questions: What skills will be valuable in an uncertain job market? How can young people channel their energy into meaningful pursuits? And what does it truly mean to prepare for the future in a rapidly changing world? Join us as we unpack these vital topics and consider a more holistic approach to education and personal development.Maxim Smith is acting as a guinea pig for a program which is meant to prepare young men for the future. This program is designed to be a replacement for the only three routes advertised to young men today - go to college, the military, or a dead-end job.All of these typical routes of life are designed to shape us into cogs for a wheel that doesn't serve us. Wasted time, debt, lack of skills, and a soul crushing job define many who follow the traditional route. This program, called “The Preparation”, is meant to guide young men on a path where they properly utilize their time to gain skills, build relationships, and reach a state of being truly educated. The Preparation is meant to set young men up for success. https://www.thepreparation.com/ 00:00 Start[00:02:29] The Preparation program for young men.[00:07:14] Alternative paths for young men.[00:09:44] Holistic preparation and skill development.[00:15:38] Blend of mental and physical skills.[00:19:24] Uncertainty and skill development.[00:24:28] Agility in skill development.[00:29:14] College experience and identity crisis.[00:32:00] Education system indoctrination issues.[00:35:16] Middle school accusations of harassment.[00:40:43] Educational systems and boys' energy.[00:44:34] Physical activity and motivation.[00:49:49] Skills for self-directed learning.[00:54:38] Language acquisition as a skill.[00:59:29] Wilderness skill schools recommendations.[01:05:24] Female version of preparation.[01:08:05] Book completion timeline.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. In today's episode, I spoke with Katy Faust, founder and president of Them Before Us, a global movement defending children's right to their mother and father. She's also the author of three books: "Them Before Us," "Raising Conservative Kids in a Woke City," and "Pro-Child Politics."I began by sharing my personal perspective as a stepparent, acknowledging that while my own family structure isn't ideal from the perspective of children's rights, it's important that we can discuss what's best for children without adults becoming defensive. I expressed how Katy's work resonates with me despite sometimes being difficult to hear, as it challenges us to put children's needs before adult desires. We explored Katy's concept of natural rights, which she explained through three key criteria: they must exist pre-government, nobody has to provide them, and they're distributed equally. She made a compelling case for how conservative values address the root causes of issues that liberals care about, demonstrating how family breakdown underlies many social problems like teen homelessness, incarceration rates, and suicide.A significant portion of our conversation focused on Katy's approach to raising children with strong values in challenging environments. She outlined three developmental phases - grammar, logic, and rhetoric - and explained how parents should adjust their approach during each phase. The grammar phase (elementary school) focuses on exposing children to truth and beauty while filtering out harmful content. The logic phase (middle school) involves purposefully introducing and discussing societal distortions. The rhetoric phase (high school) emphasizes emotional connection over teaching. We discussed practical strategies for parents who may have missed earlier opportunities to lay foundational worldview groundwork with their children. Katy stressed the importance of maximizing emotional connection through physical proximity and becoming knowledgeable about issues their children care about, rather than trying to force ideological discussions. The conversation concluded with insights about how parents can handle their fears about raising children with conservative values in progressive environments, and the importance of what Katy calls the "slow worldview handoff" - a four-step process of teaching children that moves from "I do, you watch" to "you do, I watch.”Katy Faust is Founder and President of Them Before Us, a global movement defending children's right to their mother and father, and author of the book by the same name. She publishes, speaks and testifies widely on why marriage and family are matters of justice for children. Her articles have appeared in Newsweek, USA Today, The Federalist, Public Discourse, WORLD Magazine, The Daily Signal, the Washington Examiner, the American Mind, and the American Conservative. She is on the advisory board for the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship. Katy helped design the teen edition of CanaVox which studies sex, marriage and relationships from a natural law perspective. Katy and co-author Stacy Manning detailed their philosophy of worldview transmission in their second book, Raising Conservative Kids in a Woke City. Her third book, Pro-Child Politics was published September 2024. She and her husband are raising their four children in Seattle.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. I had a fascinating conversation with Nina Paley, an animator, director, artist, and co-host of Heterodorx podcast. While some may know her award-winning animated films like "Sita Sings the Blues" and "Seder Masochism," our conversation delved deeper into her personal journey through cancel culture and her insights on scapegoating dynamics.Nina shared how her life changed dramatically in 2017 when she spoke up about gender identity issues after a year of careful research and consideration. The backlash was swift and severe – she was banned from festivals, speaking engagements dried up, and her career as a celebrated artist effectively came to an end. What struck me most was her evolution in processing this experience, particularly how she's come to view it through a spiritual lens, despite not being traditionally religious. We explored the ancient biblical concept of scapegoating, and Nina offered a compelling analysis of the difference between sacrifice and scapegoating. Through her research on Jesus Christ, she had a profound realization that helped her reframe her own experience – she could choose to see herself as a sacrifice rather than just a scapegoat, finding agency in a situation where she previously felt powerless. Our conversation touched on the psychological dynamics of cancel culture, the nature of tribal behavior, and the powerful energies that get activated when communities unite against a perceived internal threat. Nina's insights about how people often only "punch up" at those they perceive as powerful gave her a new perspective on her own cancellation. We also discussed her thoughts on artificial intelligence and its impact on artistic communion with audiences, leading to a poignant reflection on how the media landscape is rapidly changing. Nina shared vulnerably about the grief of losing her career and the ongoing process of accepting that the past cannot be recreated. What I appreciate most about Nina is her ability to maintain perspective while acknowledging pain. Despite everything she's been through, she hasn't lost her capacity for nuanced thinking or her recognition of human complexity. As she put it, "Life is suffering, but it's not only suffering."This conversation reminded me that sometimes our deepest wounds can become sources of wisdom, and that there's always more than one way to understand our most painful experiences.Nina Paley is the creator of the award-winning animated musical feature films Sita Sings the Blues and Seder-Masochism. A 2006 Guggenheim Fellow and Free Culture advocate, she recently published the unexpectedly controversial comic book Agents of H.A.G. and the popular GENDER WARS Playing Cards. She regularly draws requests for Hundred-and-fifty Dollar Drawings. Her experimental digital projects include Apocalypse Animated and MysticSymbolic. A staunch proponent of Free Speech, Nina co-hosts the Heterodorx podcast with Corinna Cohn.0:00 - Introduction to Nina Paley: animator, director, artist 3:12 - Early career success with "Sita Sings the Blues" 7:45 - The 2017 cancellation: speaking up about gender identity 15:30 - Copyright vs. copyleft: Nina's unconventional views 23:18 - Understanding scapegoating dynamics 31:45 - The biblical origins: sacrifice vs. scapegoat 39:20 - Family dynamics and patterns of scapegoating 45:30 - Finding agency in victimhood 52:15 - The power dynamics of cancel culture 58:40 - Grieving and healing processes 1:05:23 - AI and the changing media landscape 1:12:45 - Reflections on life and suffering 1:16:30 - Where to find Nina's workROGD REPAIR Course + Community for Parents is available now! When Harrison was 26 years old, he found out he was going to be a father. Although he hadn't known his girlfriend for very long, the news filled him with joy, and the expectant parents began enthusiastically preparing for the family life of their dreams. But things took an unexpected turn when the mother-to-be asked him: what if our child is nonbinary or trans? This marked the beginning of a harrowing series of events involving parental alienation, gender lunacy being projected onto a baby, and a prolonged court battle that was ultimately only won because of altogether different factors. In this touching conversation, a young father shares the challenging path that led him to ultimately win full custody of his son — and the right to affirm him as the boy he was born as. Harrison's story offers an honest look at navigating the family court system and standing up for his parental rights, even when facing seemingly impossible odds. Harrison speaks candidly about his relationship with Sawyer's mother, how their differing views on parenting and gender identity created growing tension, and the difficult decisions he faced as their conflict deepened. He offers unique insights into the family court experience, speaking to both its frustrations and the hope that persistence and dedication can prevail. Harrison's experience serves as both a cautionary tale and a source of encouragement for parents facing similar challenges.Beyond the legal battle, this episode examines the changing landscape of modern parenting and the importance of staying true to your convictions while navigating complex family dynamics. Harrison's story reminds us that sometimes the hardest paths lead to the most meaningful victories.Harrison Tinsley is a parental rights advocate and protector of children. Recently he won full custody of his five year old son Sawyer whom he saved from gender ideology and an unsafe environment. He speaks up against gender ideology being pushed on children, kids being given irreversible surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormones, men being in women's sports and spaces, and says that dads rights matter. Harrison lives by the motto “Be Brave.” He can be followed on X @harrisontinz https://x.com/Harrisontinz 00:00 Start[00:00:20] Nature of evil in history.[00:05:16] Parenting and transgender issues.[00:10:25] Gender identity and custody battles.[00:12:21] Child custody and gender confusion.[00:15:49] Gender madness and family court.[00:21:09] Child's psychological trauma in custody.[00:25:57] Custody battle and child safety.[00:29:44] CPS worker bias and politics.[00:35:06] Parental custody and gender ideology.[00:36:57] The nature of evil.[00:43:02] Duty to protect children.[00:44:45] Parenting and legal system challenges.[00:50:40] Courage to speak out.[00:55:10] Normalizing gender critical perspectives.[00:58:06] Cancel culture and open dialogue.[01:04:00] Education reform and homeschooling.[01:05:00] Protecting kids in legal system.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community for Parents is available now! Many critical thinkers have rightfully wondered why gender dysphoria is treated in clinical settings any differently from anorexia, body integrity identity disorder, and other psychiatric ailments featuring a mind-body problem. Today's guest is the right person to answer that question.Jaco van Zyl, a South Africa-trained clinical psychologist now practicing in Ireland, joins me to discuss his paper, "Formulating Gender Dysphoria as an Affective-Perceptual Disturbance Involving the Body," which was recently published in the journal Psychodynamic Practice. Jaco shares his insights on the psychological underpinnings of gender dysphoria, particularly in adolescents, and critiques the current activist-driven narratives that often overshadow psychodynamic perspectives. We explore the developmental journey of infants and how early experiences shape their understanding of identity and bodily sensations. Jaco emphasizes the importance of navigating the pleasure and reality principles, a concept rooted in psychoanalytic theory, and how failures in this process can lead to arrested development. We also discuss the implications of ideologies that discourage critical thinking about gender identity, highlighting the dangers of treating distress as a literal interpretation of one's body.Throughout our conversation, we aim to unpack the complexities of gender dysphoria, the role of early attachment experiences, and the potential consequences of affirming practices that may overlook deeper psychological issues. This episode invites listeners to consider the intersection of psychoanalysis, gender identity, and the importance of fostering a more nuanced understanding of these critical topics.Jaco van Zyl is a South Africa-trained Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Ireland. He has worked in the Department of Correctional Services, and in private practice at a psychiatric hospital in South Africa. In this solo episode, I share some exciting news for parents navigating the complexities of communicating with their trans-identified children — especially those who may have financial barriers preventing them from enrolling in my program, ROGD Repair. I announce a new scholarship program, made possible by a generous anonymous donor, which will allow 15 families in financial need to access the course for free. Please share this episode with someone you know who could benefit! For those who aren't already familiar, I describe what's in ROGD Repair, a comprehensive self-guided online course designed to help parents understand and improve their relationships with their adolescents or young adults who are questioning their gender identity. I describe how the new scholarship program works, and how parents in financial need with a sincere desire to engage in the program can apply.I discuss the importance of mindset and communication strategies, emphasizing that parents can control their approach and understanding of their child's state of mind. The program includes over 120 lessons, featuring videos, written content, reflection questions, and community discussions, all aimed at providing educational guidance to empower parents to make wise decisions when communicating in high-stakes situations.Throughout the episode, I explore key concepts such as the psychological dynamics at play in these situations, the impact of social contagion, and effective communication techniques that can foster better understanding and connection. My goal is to equip parents with the tools they need to navigate these challenging conversations and ultimately support their children's well-being. 00:00 Start[00:00:57] Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria.[00:04:42] Consulting parents of trans youth.[00:07:45] Reflection questions for family dynamics.[00:12:04] Scholarship program announcement.[00:14:42] Scholarship program for families.[00:20:36] Communication strategies with children.[00:21:39] Family dynamics and support roles.[00:25:21] Psychology and communication in parenting.[00:29:01] Dysfunctional family communication patterns.[00:32:24] Double binds in family psychology.[00:37:46] Female-specific issues in parenting.[00:40:14] Adolescent inhibition versus disinhibition.[00:45:28] Scholarship program for families.[00:47:01] Free discovery calls for support.[00:50:47] Unforeseen troubles and benefits.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community for Parents is available now! In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Diana Lutfi, a bioethics and legal scholar, who recently authored an amicus brief on behalf of the detransitioners community in the Supreme Court case, United States of America v. Jonathan Skrmetti. We dive deep into the implications of this landmark case, which challenges Tennessee's prohibition on “gender-affirming care” for minors. Diana explains how this case could set a precedent affecting similar laws in 26 states, raising critical questions about the future of sex trait modification. We discuss the complexities surrounding the concept of "standards of care" in pediatric gender treatment, particularly how these standards can be influenced by political agendas rather than solid evidence. Diana emphasizes the importance of recognizing biological differences in healthcare and the inherent discrimination that occurs in medical treatment based on sex. We also explore the tension between parental rights, state regulations, and the autonomy of minors in making life-altering decisions.Throughout our conversation, we aim to uncover the broader implications of this case for healthcare policy and the ethical considerations surrounding permanent sex trait alteration for minors. Join us as we navigate these challenging topics and seek to understand the stakes involved for individuals and families facing these critical decisions.Read the amicus brief here.Donate to support Diana's work.Diana Lutfi, JD, MSHCM, CPHQ is a legal and bioethics scholar, healthcare professional, and advocate of patients' and providers' rights. Marked by a history of public service, Diana founded sustainable high school programs and pioneered a TEDx Youth movement in Southern California. She founded a large (100+ students) credit-bearing worldviews course at UC Berkeley. During the pandemic, Diana successfully challenged and changed Colorado Nursing Board rules, decreasing the red tape around reinstatements. Diana has avidly worked to protect patients' rights amidst healthcare policy, helped physicians write policy proposals, and most recently authored a Supreme Court amicus on behalf of the larger detransitioners community. In her professional career, Diana was a human subjects researcher, healthcare administrator, educator, and projects consultant. She has extensively investigated issues around access, autonomy, bodily integrity, and coercion in healthcare. Diana has consciously positioned herself to defend health freedom and protect healthcare providers seeking to reform our healthcare system.View my complete list of book recommendations, including those written by authors who have been guests on this show, at https://sometherapist.com/bookshop.As an Amazon affiliate, I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases made through affiliate links from my show notes or website. My guest today is Dr. Nikki Johnson, a former pediatrician and co-director of FAIR in Medicine. We dive deep into the challenges parents face in finding trustworthy medical providers for their children and the broader implications of the current healthcare system. Dr. Nikki shares her journey through medical training and her eventual departure from clinical practice due to ethical concerns and the corporatization of medicine. We discuss the concept of perverse incentives in healthcare, particularly how insurance reimbursement structures can compromise the quality of care. Dr. Nikki highlights the shift in focus from patient-centered care to a more corporate-driven model, which often prioritizes profit over patient well-being. We also explore some lesser-known impacts of the Affordable Care Act on the medical landscape, including the rise of non-physician providers, and the challenges this poses for traditional medical practices.Throughout our conversation, we aim to empower parents to trust their instincts when it comes to their children's health and to advocate for better care. We also touch on the importance of transparency in healthcare and the need for a return to a more personal, relationship-driven approach to medicine. This episode is a call to action for parents to be informed and engaged in their children's healthcare decisions.Nicole “Dr. Nikki” M. Johnson, MD DNBPAS, has a B.S. in Biology from Case Western Reserve University and a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Nikki earned certification in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She is passionate about reforming healthcare and wishes to see medicine restored to a focus on the individual doctor-patient relationship where physicians are bound by the Hippocratic Oath, and patients have affordable evidence-based care, choice, and transparency. She works as an independent consultant with those who help her achieve her mission. Dr. Nikki has a record of advocacy and service. She is the director of FAIR In Medicine and an advisor for Affirming Reality Connected. She is the past President and a Co-founder of PHYSICIANS FOR PATIENTS and a contributing author of Free2Care's A Physician-Led Roadmap to Patient-Centered Medical Care. Dr. Nikki also served as a Senior Fellow for Restore Childhood and a team member of Urgency of Normal. In this episode, I welcome back James Esses, a writer and advocate who has been at the forefront of discussions surrounding gender ideology and its impact on the therapeutic profession. We dive into James's journey, which began during his training as a therapist in the UK, where he raised concerns about the medicalization of children experiencing gender dysphoria. His advocacy led to a significant legal battle after he was expelled from his graduate program, a case that has since resulted in important settlements affirming the validity of gender-critical beliefs among therapists. We explore the implications of James's case for therapists in the UK and beyond, particularly regarding freedom of speech and the ethical responsibilities of mental health professionals. We discuss the troubling trend of therapists prioritizing identity politics over individual client needs, and how this shift has affected the quality of care. Additionally, we examine the concept of "lived experience" and its potential dangers when it comes to guiding treatment decisions, especially for vulnerable populations like adolescents.Throughout our conversation, we aim to uncover the challenges faced by therapists today, the impact of social media on mental health, and the importance of maintaining ethical standards in therapy. Join us as we navigate these complex issues and consider what the future holds for the counseling profession.James Esses is a writer, commentator and advocate, specializing in the impact of ideology on society. He has a particular interest in the topic of gender ideology from the perspective of safeguarding children from irreversible medicalisation. He founded the Declaration for Biological Reality, calling for significant change to public policy in this space. James brought high-profile legal action against the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and his case resulted in a significant statement expressly protecting therapists with gender critical beliefs. He frequently appears on television, including on GB News and TalkTV, and writes for a number of publications, including the Mail, Telegraph, Spectator, Spiked and Critic. He also writes a Substack alongside Matt Goodwin. James was previously a Criminal Barrister and spent many years specializing in crime and criminal justice in the public sector, including tackling child sexual abuse and exploitation.James will soon be launching Just Therapy. Even if you've been following my work for a while, you're not going to believe how bad the state of affairs has gotten when it comes to postgraduate education in counseling psychology — until you hear from today's guest. Ryan Rogers, a student currently pursuing a masters degree in the hopes of becoming a therapist, joins me to discuss the troubling trends he's observed in mental health education. Ryan shares his personal journey, including his background in addiction and the motivation behind his pursuit of a counseling career. We delve into the alarming shift in graduate programs, where political activism often takes precedence over the core principles of therapy.Ryan highlights his experiences in classes that prioritize critical theory over practical skills, leaving students ill-equipped to address the real needs of their clients. We explore the implications of this shift, particularly in relation to suicide prevention, addiction treatment, and the importance of cultural competency. Ryan raises critical questions about the role of therapists: should they be activists for so-called social justice, or should they focus on helping individuals navigate their personal struggles?Throughout our conversation, we examine the consequences of substituting genuine therapeutic training with ideological indoctrination. As we unpack these issues, we aim to shed light on the future of counseling psychology and the urgent need for a return to a client-centered approach that prioritizes healing over activism.Ryan Rogers is a graduate student in clinical mental health counseling. Has modern therapy become a hostile environment towards Jewish people? I sit down with Malka Shaw, a licensed clinical social worker and trauma therapist, to delve into the pressing issue of anti-Semitism and its psychological implications. Malka shares her experiences as a therapist and the challenges Jewish clients face in therapy, particularly in light of recent events that have heightened anti-Semitic sentiments. We discuss the inappropriate remarks some therapists make, which can invalidate the experiences of their Jewish clients, and how this reflects a broader trend of misunderstanding and bias within the mental health field.Malka also introduces her organization, Kesher Shalom, which aims to provide education and support for Jewish communities while addressing the cultural accommodations needed in mental health practices. We explore the concept of anti-Semitism as a form of racism, the historical context of Jews as scapegoats, and the psychological mechanisms that allow such biases to persist. Malka clarifies the true meaning of Zionism and why the rise of anti-Zionist sentiments concern her. Throughout our conversation, we question why anti-Semitism is often overlooked and how it serves as a warning sign for societal health.Malka Shaw, LCSW (licensed in NJ, NY, and Florida), is a psychotherapist and trauma expert with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. Specializing in trauma recovery using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), she has built a private practice focusing on women's wellness, relationship dynamics, and maternal health. Malka also provides clinical supervision, and consultation, develops continuing education courses on trauma and antisemitism; and often presents at professional events. Drawing on her experience with large-scale trauma, Malka founded Kesher Shalom Projects following the devastating events of October 7th. KSP's mission is to provide education and professional development on mental health and antisemitism, critical for building resilience within Jewish communities. By helping others understand the psychology behind antisemitic propaganda and its impact on society, Kesher Shalom offers valuable insights for combating antisemitism and supporting those affected.MalkaShaw.comKesherShalom.comMalka's next training for therapists, coming up December 2, 2024: Navigating Trauma: GUARD System Techniques for Addressing Symptoms from Antisemitism and Prolonged StressBooks mentioned in this episode are listed below. Why is it so hard to find a trustworthy physician? Dr. Andrew Zywiec has chosen to practice medicine as a licensed tribal practitioner through the First Nation Medical Board in order to allow him the freedom to operate according to his conscience. What is his inside perspective on the moral and ethical crossroads many aspiring healers find themselves navigating in today's politicized, money-corrupted healthcare landscape? We dive into the complexities surrounding gender dysphoria, exploring how it often intersects with trauma, anxiety, and depression. Dr. Zywiec shares his perspective on the current medical landscape, particularly the challenges parents face in finding trustworthy doctors for their trans-identified youth. We discuss the evolution of the "standard of care" in treating gender dysphoria, highlighting how it has shifted from a more holistic approach to one that prioritizes affirmation and fast-tracks medicalization without addressing underlying issues. Dr. Zywiec emphasizes the importance of both critical thinking and intuition in medicine and critiques the algorithmic nature of modern medical practices, which can lead to a lack of personalized care.We also break down the concept of “medical necessity” and how it has been manipulated within the healthcare system, particularly in relation to insurance practices. I question whether “gender affirming” practitioners are in fact committing insurance fraud.Dr. Zywiec graduated medical school in 2019 with Distinction in Research and the Research Commendation Award, then left hospital medicine in 2023 due to ethical objections to current vaccine practices as well as the pharmacological castration and surgical mutilation of children. Dr. Zywiec actively fought against COVID mandates and “gender affirming care” in minors, and is still involved in the fight against medical tyranny and censorship, working with healthcare professionals nationwide and leaders in both the Ohio and Michigan House of Representatives. Dr. Zywiec is active in pro-life advocacy, and cofounded Doctors Against Gender Affirming Care with Dr. Somil Viradia. If you are a doctor please sign their petition. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Jillian Spencer, a child and adolescent psychiatrist from Brisbane, Australia, who has found herself at the center of a heated debate surrounding so-called “gender-affirming care” for children. After raising concerns about the practices at her hospital's gender clinic, Jillian was suspended and is now embroiled in legal battles that could redefine workplace protections for those with gender-critical beliefs. What led her to take such a bold stand, and what are the implications for mental health care?We explore the concepts in a not-yet-published paper Jillian recently co-authored with Dr. Roberto D'Angelo, analyzing the interpersonal dynamics between gender clinicians and their patients using psychodynamic theory. How do psychological dynamics such as repression, collusion, codependency, projection, and reaction formation play into relationships between distressed, vulnerable patients and the professionals who “affirm” them? And what are the risks involved in psychiatry's shift away from psychodynamic thinking? We analyze the alarming trend of fast-tracking youth with suicidal ideation to gender clinics and the dangerous message this sends to vulnerable adolescents, potentially incentivizing personality disordered behavior and risking permanently entrenching vulnerable people into problematic problems for life that they could have grown out of in adolescence if only provided with the proper support.Jillian Spencer is a child and adolescent psychiatrist in Brisbane, Australia. In April 2023, she was stood down from her job at the Queensland Children's Hospital for raising concerns about gender interventions for children. Since that time, she has spoken out in the Australian media about her concerns which has led to further allegations of breaching the employee Code of Conduct. She remains suspended from her job. Jillian has launched legal action claiming political discrimination in the workplace due to her belief in biological reality, that people can't change sex, in the hope of achieving a Forstater decision in Australia. This court case will occur in early 2025. She is also awaiting an employment commission outcome as to whether she is officially a ‘whistleblower'. If so, this would help her to retain her hospital job. You can follow her on X @jilliantweetingNote: I mentioned that an episode with James Esses would come out the week before Jillian's. The timeline for the release of James' episode has been pushed back a few weeks to allow him time to finish a project we hope to be able to announce with that episode. Be on the lookout for my conversation with James in November. 00:00 Start[00:02:39] Psychodynamic thinking in therapy.[00:05:36] Gender clinic referral practices.[00:09:39] Suicidality and gender clinic access.[00:12:20] Trans identity and self-harm.[00:16:04] Parent-Child Dynamics in “Trans” Care.[00:19:07] Gender clinic assessment validity.[00:23:15] Whistleblower protections in Queensland.[00:27:22] Political discrimination and beliefs.[00:30:49] Multidisciplinary care model critique.[00:34:43] Psychodynamic perspective in treatment.[00:37:49] Clinician influence on therapy dynamics.[00:44:36] Projection and hate in therapy.[00:46:11] Power dynamics in gender clinics.[00:50:35] Psychological health and gender distress.[00:53:11] The wounded healer archetype.[00:56:32] Transgender identity and empathy.[01:00:17] Gender non-conforming youth sexuality.[01:04:16] Downfall of psychotherapy.[01:08:03] Self-care and well-being tips.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community for Parents is available now! In this episode, I sit down with Warren Smith, a passionate educator and critical thinker, who gained viral attention for his thought-provoking dialogue in which he used Socratic dialogue to question a student's belief that “J.K. Rowling is transphobic.” We dive deep into the importance of teaching critical thinking skills in today's educational landscape, where echo chambers and social media often stifle independent thought. How can we encourage students to think for themselves amidst a flood of content and opinions?Warren shares his experiences as a multimedia teacher, revealing the innovative ways he helps students become comfortable on camera and articulate their thoughts. But what happens when the very framework of education is challenged by administrative pressures and societal expectations? We explore the obstacles he faced in fostering a culture of open dialogue and critical inquiry. As we discuss the implications of his viral video, Warren reflects on the repercussions it had on his career. Did he anticipate the fallout, and how did it change his teaching environment? We also touch on the broader cultural shifts in education and the challenges of navigating a landscape that often prioritizes conformity over creativity. What does the future hold for educators who dare to challenge the status quo? Warren also turns the tables and interviews me, offering me an opportunity to articulate how I built my podcast, how my thoughts on gender ideology have taken shape over the past several years, and where my attitude toward the mental health profession currently stands.Warren Smith is the founder of the Secret Scholars on YouTube. Have you ever wondered why far left Gen Z activists idealize foreign cultures halfway across the planet while diminishing their own, to the point of holding beliefs that seem paradoxical or even delusional? Today's brilliant guest, Maral Salmassi, helps us explore the complex dynamics of the "Queers for Palestine" movement and the sadomasochistic interpersonal dynamics that can emerge within woke culture.Maral draws on the psychological frameworks of Erich Fromm to unpack the internal conflicts that fuel these behaviors. Are we witnessing a projection of powerlessness that leads to sadistic control over dissenting voices? As we navigate these intricate themes, we also touch on the implications of cluster B personality traits in social movements. In order to better understand ideologically captured youth, what do mature thinkers need to know about psychological phenomena such as splitting, projection, idealization and devaluation, and the Karpman Drama Triangle of victim, rescuer and persecutor? What role does social media play in amplifying these dynamics, and how does it contribute to identity fragmentation among vulnerable individuals?Join us as we dissect the paradoxes of ideological purity and the logical fallacies that can arise in the pursuit of social justice. Tune in to discover Maral's insights and my reflections on these pressing questions that resonate deeply in today's cultural landscape. Today's format deviates from the norm as Maral reads a thoughtfully scripted monologue prepared exclusively for my listeners, and I respond with my asynchronous reflections.Maral Salmassi was born in Tehran, Iran, and spent her early years in Iran, Jordan, and Israel, where her father was a diplomat under the Shah. Her mother, a literature teacher, nurtured her appreciation for culture and the arts. Following the fall of the Shah and the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war, her family fled Iran in 1986, settling in Germany. Salmassi pursued an education in Media Art in Cologne, which provided a foundation for her future endeavors. She is also a self-taught music producer and sound engineer. Since 1997, she has shaped culture as an artist, producer, and entrepreneur, initially in Cologne and later in Berlin. Her work is influenced by her diverse cultural background and a strong interest in sociopolitics and psychology. She also spent a brief period living in France, contributing to her multicultural perspective.Books mentioned in this episode:The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness by Erich FrommEscape from Freedom by Erich FrommThe Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff00:00 Start[00:00:10] Ideological purity in woke culture.[00:05:06] Sadomasochism in Queers for Palestine.[00:08:07] Polarizing content and identity.[00:12:20] Gameable heuristics in society.[00:17:34] Victim mentality and self-interest.[00:20:10] Reaction formation and its implications.[00:24:46] Woke beliefs and self-interest.[00:27:25] Sadomasochism and entitlement dynamics.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community for Parents is available now! In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with Vaishnavi Sundar, a self-taught filmmaker and advocate for women's rights, about her groundbreaking documentary, Behind the Looking Glass. This film delves into the often-overlooked experiences of women whose male partners “transition,” shedding light on the emotional turmoil and coercive control they face. Why is it that these women, often silenced and marginalized, feel compelled to redefine their identities in the shadow of their partners?Vaishnavi shares powerful insights into the dynamics of narcissism and gaslighting that permeate these relationships. How do societal expectations and gender ideology contribute to the erasure of these women's voices? As we explore the metaphor of the "looking glass," we uncover the disturbing reality of men who, in their quest for self-identity, leave their partners feeling like mere ghosts of their former selves. What happens when these women finally muster the courage to leave? What challenges do they face in reclaiming their autonomy and identity? Join us as we navigate these complex questions and hear the poignant stories of resilience and hope from those who have endured this unique form of domestic violence. You won't want to miss this eye-opening conversation that challenges the narratives surrounding gender identity and the often-unseen victims of this movement.Watch Behind the Looking Glass on YouTube.Vaishnavi Sundar is a writer and a self-taught filmmaker from Chennai, India. Through her films, she advocates for the rights of women and girls worldwide. She founded Lime Soda Films about a decade ago with the aim of highlighting themes of social justice, women's empowerment and education. I'm grateful to share a portion of my most recent conversation with Josh Slocum from the Disaffected podcast, where we dive deep into the complexities surrounding Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD) and my new program, ROGD Repair. Have you ever wondered how cluster B personality traits intertwine with gender identity ideology to create a perfect storm for vulnerable youth? What if the very beliefs that are meant to empower these young people are actually leading them down a path of confusion and harm?As we explore the trifecta of social contagion—gender identity ideology, woke beliefs about social justice, and cluster B personality traits—I reveal how these elements can distort the way adolescents perceive themselves and their relationships. What are the common pitfalls parents face when trying to connect with their children caught in this whirlwind? Can more information actually backfire when trying to reach a child who feels morally superior?Join us as we unpack the psychological vulnerabilities at play and discuss practical strategies for parents to navigate these turbulent waters. How can understanding the dynamics of splitting and projection help parents regain their footing? Tune in to discover the answers and learn how ROGD Repair can empower families to foster healthier communication and understanding.Josh Slocum is the host of the weekly show Disaffected, available on Youtube and all usual podcast platforms. Disaffected examines politics and culture through a psychological point of view. Josh's experience coming from an abusive childhood informs the show's working premise that the psychological narcissistic abuse found in families now structures our public life. Follow him on X @disaffectedpod. This episode was borrowed from episode 187 of Disaffected, Old Man Yells at Cloud. In this episode, I sit down with my good friend Anita Bartholomew, who is deep into writing her upcoming book, "Sacrificial Lambs," which explores the alarming indoctrination happening in our K-12 education system. Have you ever wondered how children are being taught about gender identity in first grade? What happens when the lines between education and ideology blur?Anita shares her journey from being a traditional liberal to confronting the radical shifts in educational content, particularly around queer theory and gender ideology. We discuss the troubling rise in young people identifying as transgender and the role schools play in this phenomenon. How are children being primed for these beliefs, and what impact does this have on their mental health? We dive into shocking examples of curriculum materials that normalize complex and abstract concepts about gender for young children. Are teachers equipped to handle such sensitive topics, or are they overstepping their bounds? As we unravel these issues, we also touch on the implications of comprehensive sexual education and the troubling trend of keeping parents in the dark. What does this mean for the future of our children? Tune in to discover the answers and more as we navigate this critical conversation. For almost three decades, Anita Bartholomew has been one of Reader's Digest's top reporters, and a contributing editor to the magazine for eight of those years. She's covered a vast range of stories over the course of her career. But what's always animated her writing, no matter the topic, is her focus on the people involved, how they coped with the extraordinary events affecting their lives. Her current book project, about how the trans cult targets kids, combines in-depth reporting and analysis with vignettes about the real people trying to maintain sanity in what amounts to a mass psychosis afflicting nearly all of the western world. She is the co-author of the award-winning medical memoir SOMETHING TO PROVE, and the author of SIEGE, about the January 6, 2021 US Capitol uprising. Two of her narratives have been adapted as TV movies, one for Netflix and another for Lifetime. Laura Wiley Haynes returns to shed light on the complex intergenerational aspects of the current gender crisis. Why do so many young people today seem unable to launch into adulthood, remaining perennially online and disembodied, reportedly held back by feelings they label “dysphoria?” What developmental shifts have occurred in parenting over the last few generations that might explain this phenomenon?Laura shares her insights on how the lack of dyadic care—one-on-one nurturing relationships—has contributed to a generation of children who struggle with self-perception and emotional regulation. Could the rise of screens and social media be robbing our kids of the deep, relational connections they need to thrive? We explore the implications of group care environments and how they may hinder the development of essential social skills. As we discuss the alarming trend of young adults romanticizing their emotional turmoil, I ask: what happens when a young man on estrogen experiences mood swings reminiscent of a teenage girl? Is this a sign of deeper unresolved issues? Join us as we unpack these critical questions and more, revealing the intricate web of attachment, trauma, and the urgent need for effective parenting in today's world. Tune in to discover how we can better support our children in navigating their identities and emotions.Laura Wiley Haynes is a writer, a mother & grandmother, and a former CASA. Like so many other young women I've met in my counseling career, Taylor was prescribed both SSRI antidepressants and hormonal birth control shortly after she hit puberty, and remained on both types of pills until her 20's, impacting her libido, identity, body image, and self-esteem. Somewhere along the way, she developed gender dysphoria and a fixation on the idea that becoming a “trans man” would solve her psychological problems. But when she stopped taking meds, her “dysphoria” lifted like a fog. What happened here? And what can Taylor's story tell us about the possibility of a massively underreported iatrogenic pipeline of young women being ushered from hormonal contraceptives and SSRI's at puberty, to testosterone and mastectomies in their 20's after years of low libido and identity instability?Due to the many years Taylor Murphy spent thinking she was transgender and wanting to transition into a man, she now shares her cured experience of gender dysphoria and how it was related to the medication she was on. She shares her concerns on the side effects of medication and transition. Parents of trans-identified adolescents and young adults need educational resources that go beyond merely explaining why gender ideology and medicalization are harmful. They need tools that help them understand the psychological state their adolescent and young adult children are in, and teach them different approaches to communicating that are more likely to succeed than to backfire given their kids' state of mind.I created The ROGD Repair Course and Community with this in mind. It's a comprehensive toolkit designed to empower concerned parents to help get their kids out of this mess while restoring their relationships — and their sanity.ROGD Repair is a promising new program designed to equip parents of trans-identified adolescents and young adults with a comprehensive and customizable toolkit of psychology concepts and communication skills, curated specifically to help them walk their children toward desistance while protecting parents' own sanity.Imagine if parents of “trans” identified kids actually had a way to walk them out of this mess, wisely and strategically, and bring them home to safety and sanity.Imagine if every new ROGD parent knew which pitfalls to avoid when communicating with zealous adolescents and young adults. What if, instead, these parents could skillfully apply time-tested communication techniques, suited to address the mental state of gender-confused youth? What if the youth's own fears and motivations could actually lead them toward health, harmony and wholeness? What if parents could protect their sanity and their most important relationships at the same time, all while improving their odds of rescuing their children from the clutches of a harmful ideology before any bodily harm takes place? The ROGD Repair Course + Community for Parents is designed to do all of that. And now, it's available to the public, at a fraction of the cost of coaching. Parents can learn the tools from 90+ video and written lessons on their own time and begin implementing them immediately. Discuss the Reflection Questions with their spouse or a buddy, or journal straight into the program. Ask questions, share insights, and request new topics in the community forums.Right now I am offering the first 100 people to enroll post-launch an incredible offer that won't come again. Audra's firsthand experiences with heinous crimes provide a chilling insight into the lack of guilt and empathy in certain offenders. What drives these individuals to commit such atrocities? How do they navigate the world with a narrow focus on their selfish and sadistic desires, devoid of remorse? As the conversation unfolds, we touch on the importance of mothering in the 21st century and the delicate balance between protecting children and navigating societal norms. We discuss the risks associated with daycare and the need for vigilant screening of caregivers. What red flags should parents watch out for? How can they ensure their child's safety in a world where predators lurk in unexpected places? The episode takes a thought-provoking turn as we explore the complexities of mental health services and the challenges faced by individuals with various conditions. From the need for social skills training for autistic young adults to the debate surrounding the treatment of chronic offenders with antisocial traits, the conversation delves into the gaps in the current system. But where do these individuals truly belong? Are prisons the answer, or is there a need for more specialized care? Tune in to uncover the answers to these pressing questions and more.Audra Worlow has a Bachelors of Applied Health Science from BGSU. Jane Wise is a certified addictions counselor who, like me, provides both individual and group support for parents of ROGD kids. After learning that parents who questioned their children's gender identity were not only lacking in support, but were being called bigots and transphobes just for worrying about their kids, Jane decided to use her skills as a group counselor to help provide a space for them to support each other. In this episode, we compare and contrast our approaches to helping ROGD parents, work that occupies relatively new and uncharted territory in a cultural and political landscape that remains hostile toward the concerns of both parents and mental health professionals. Jane shares her personal evolution from a staunch supporter of the trans movement to a critical observer, shedding light on the struggles faced by parents navigating rapid onset gender dysphoria in their children. The episode touches on the delicate balance between offering support and avoiding enabling harmful decisions, drawing parallels between addiction dynamics and gender identity exploration. We discuss the emotional turmoil experienced by parents, the impact of societal pressures, and the importance of maintaining hope amidst uncertainty. We explore the concept of motivational interviewing and its application in guiding parents through difficult conversations with their children. I also share a sneak preview of a few concepts from my upcoming course for parents.Jane Wise is a certified addictions counselor who facilitates one of the regional, monthly parent support groups for Parents of ROGD Kids. Jane is not a parent herself, but after learning that parents who questioned their children's gender identity were not only lacking in support, but were being called bigots and transphobes just for worrying about their kids, she decided to use her skills as a group counselor to help provide a space for them to support each other. Jane also provides free individual support to parents of ROGD kids by appointment, and they do not have to belong to the support group she facilitates.Books mentioned in this episode can be found via these Amazon affiliate links:- Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss- The Righteous Mind by Jonathan HaidtCheck out the rest of my recommendations for ROGD parents in the second section down in my bookshop.Thank you for purchases that support the show. 00:00 Start[00:01:10] Supporting parents of ROGD kids.[00:04:29] Detransitioners and changing perspectives.[00:09:25] Parental dynamics in transition.[00:13:32] Maintaining Connection with Trans Children[00:16:15] Cluster B personality traits.[00:19:57] Catch-22 situation.[00:21:41] Double binds in parenting.[00:28:23] Parenting and problem-solving strategies.[00:31:12] Motivational interviewing technique[00:35:17] Addiction and gender exploration.[00:37:32] The nature of gender ideology.[00:40:08] The nature of evil.[00:44:31] The concept of being an ally.[00:50:52] Love and limits in parenting.[00:54:29] Parenting challenges and dynamics.[00:57:02] Cluster B personality traits.[01:01:22] Moral psychology and disgust.[01:05:16] Powerful, destructive habit.[01:09:16] Puberty blockers and suicide rates.[01:13:40] Destructive vs. good addictions.[01:15:03] Recognizing harms of gender affirmation.TALK TO ME: book a discovery call.LOCALS: Ask questions of me & guests; get early access to new episodes + exclusive content.
