Send us a textIn this episode, Kay Suthar sits down with Vinay Raman to explore what it really takes to move companies and cultures from reactive to responsive. Vinay challenges traditional leadership thinking, starting with why he doesn't even like the word employees. Instead, he sees people as experts  the ones closest to the work, standing on the mountains where real insight lives. They talk about what business leaders can learn from Olympians, why progress comes from asking better questions (not having all the answers), what humans bring to the table that AI never will, and why perspective matters more than raw intelligence when it comes to growth and decision-making.What to expect in this episode:(00:00) – Reactive vs responsive leadership (04:30) – Why Vinay doesn't call people “employees” (08:20) – What leaders can learn from Olympians (12:10) – Why the right questions matter more than answers (16:40) – What AI can't do that humans can (20:30) – Perspective over intelligence in leadership (24:10) – The Business Blind Spots podcastAbout Vinay RamanVinay Raman is the CEO of CAARMO, Inc. and host of the Business Blind Spots podcast. Retirement Revealed
The Right Retirement Plan Starts With Better Questions | Eric Brotman

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2026 39:02

A candid conversation with Eric Brotman on why retirement planning needs structure, flexibility, and fewer assumptions. One of the things I've learned after years of retirement planning conversations is that most people aren't short on opinions — they're short on clarity. They've heard plenty of rules. They've absorbed countless headlines. They've picked up advice from coworkers, friends, and financial media. But when you slow things down and ask a simple question — “Why are you doing it this way?” — the answer is often some version of, “That's just what I've always heard.” I recently sat down on the “Don't Retire… Graduate!” podcast with host Eric Brotman (author of “Don't Retire, Graduate” and previous guest of my podcast back in the “Retirement Revealed” days) to discuss why building a better retirement plan starts with asking better questions. Eric is the author of Don't Retire, Graduate, and his core message is relatable to everyone entering retirement: retirement isn't a finish line. It's a transition — and transitions deserve thoughtful planning, not assumptions. As Eric put it during our conversation, “Most people think retirement is a decision. It's not. It's a process.” Why One-Time Decisions Matter So Much to a Retirement Plan When you're working, mistakes are usually correctable. Save too little one year? You can increase contributions later. Invest poorly early on? Time often smooths things out. Retirement doesn't work that way. Retirement is full of one-way doors — decisions you can't easily undo. Social Security claiming. Pension elections. Medicare choices. Tax strategies.  Once those decisions are made, you often live with them for decades. This is where many retirement plans quietly fail. Not because the investments are bad, but because the planning skipped the hard questions upfront. The Quiet Problem of Underspending One of the most interesting threads in our conversation was something I see often with clients but rarely see addressed directly: underspending. People spend decades being disciplined savers. They're rewarded for delaying gratification. Then retirement arrives — and suddenly they're supposed to flip a switch and start spending confidently? That transition is harder than most people expect. Eric described it bluntly: “A lot of retirement plans are designed to avoid failure, not to support a great life.” When plans are built entirely around extremely high “success rates,” the tradeoff is often living smaller than necessary. Retirees follow conservative rules, spend cautiously, and end up with more money at the end of life than they started with — not because they needed it, but because no one ever gave them permission to use it. That's how an effort to preserve your money in retirement can turn into a missed opportunity. Why Rules of Thumb Aren't Enough Rules like the 4% withdrawal guideline exist for a reason — they're simple and memorable. But that simplicity comes at a cost. Rules of thumb can be useful starting points, they become problematic when people treat them as guarantees rather than guidelines that require context. Markets change. Taxes change. Spending changes. Life changes. A retirement plan that assumes constant spending and ignores flexibility is solving a math problem that doesn't exist in the real world. What works better is a framework that expects adjustment — not perfection. Retirement as a Graduation, Not an Ending The phrase “Don't retire, graduate” isn't about working forever. It's about intention. Some people want to fully step away from work. Others want to consult, volunteer, or stay mentally engaged. Neither approach is right or wrong — but drifting into retirement without deciding is where dissatisfaction often starts. What makes a difference for most retirees? Having a purpose to your life in retirement as a new chapter, not a conclusion to the entire book. When you treat retirement as a graduation into something new, the planning naturally becomes more thoughtful. Spending decisions align with values. Time gets treated as intentionally as money. And confidence replaces guesswork. The Real Goal of Retirement Planning At its core, this conversation wasn't about beating markets or optimizing spreadsheets. It was about aligning math with real life. A good retirement plan doesn't just aim to avoid running out of money. It aims to help you live well — without constant second-guessing. For many, effective retirement planning isn't about dying with the most money. It's about using the money you've earned to live well, without fear or constant second-guessing. That's a goal worth planning for. If you're approaching retirement — or already there — this episode will challenge some comfortable assumptions and help you think differently about what your plan is actually designed to do. Retirement Revealed
Why Retirement Spending Plans Fail — and How to Spend More With Confidence with Stefan Sharkansky

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2026 45:10

Retirement researcher Stefan Sharkansky explains why the 4% rule often leaves retirees underspending — and how a more flexible, math-driven approach can lead to a better retirement experience. For decades, the 4% rule has been treated as a gold standard for retirement spending. In fact, I made video about it on my YouTube channel. If you ask most retirees how much they can safely spend, the conversation quickly turns to probabilities, simulations, and avoiding failure. But what if the real risk isn't running out of money — it's not using it well? In this episode of Retire Today, I'm joined by Stefan Sharkansky, whose background in math and computer science led him to question how retirement spending strategies are actually designed — and what they optimize for. As Stefan put it plainly, “Under the average market scenario, following the safe withdrawal rate of 4% would leave you with more when you passed away than when you started.” In other words, many retirees are leaving too much money on the table in their retirement spending plan. The Problem With “Safe” Withdrawal Rates Most retirement spending research focuses on one outcome: not running out of money. Advisors often present plans as probabilities — a 90% or 95% chance of success — where “success” means the portfolio never hits zero. But this framing runs the risk of missing what retirees actually care about. After all, if you have a 90% probability of success, what that really means is that 89% of the time, you could have spent more. That insight flips traditional planning on its head. Instead of asking, “What's the safest amount I can withdraw?” the better question becomes, “What level of spending lets me live well — while staying adaptable if conditions change?” Why Retirement Spending Isn't Constant One major flaw in the 4% rule is the assumption that spending stays flat year after year. Real life doesn't work that way. Spending often starts higher in early retirement with travel and experiences, dips in later years, then rises again due to healthcare needs. Taxes also change as retirees shift between taxable accounts, IRAs, and Roth accounts. As Stefan noted, “This idea of constant spending never exists in the real world.” Any retirement spending plan that assumes otherwise is solving the wrong problem. A Salary-and-Bonus Approach to Retirement Stefan's research introduces a different framework — one that mirrors how people actually lived during their working years. He described a model where retirees create: A stable, inflation-protected income base using Social Security and a ladder of TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) A variable ‘bonus' income driven by long-term stock performance “You have your salary from Social Security and your TIPS,” Stefan explained, “and then you get a bonus based on how the stock market does.” In strong markets, spending can increase. In weaker years, spending adjusts — while working to help maintain long-term security. The key is that adjustment is assumed, not treated as failure. Rethinking Risk Tolerance Traditional risk tolerance focuses on portfolio volatility — how much account values swing up and down. Stefan argues retirees should think differently. “Risk tolerance should be about how much variability in income you're comfortable with,” he said, “not just what percentage of stocks and bonds you hold.” Some retirees prefer a higher guaranteed income floor with less variability. Others are comfortable with more income fluctuation in exchange for higher long-term spending. The right plan aligns income stability with personal preferences — not arbitrary rules. Why This Matters Many retirees say the 4% rule “doesn't work for them” — not because it's unsafe, but because it doesn't generate enough income to support the life they want. Stefan's research shows that when you plan for flexibility, rather than perfection, you can often spend more, not less — while still maintaining control. The goal isn't to maximize your ending balance. It's to maximize your retirement experience. Ultimately, you need to make your retirement spending plan in a way that not only is within your means, but meets your retirement goals.  Don't forget to leave a rating for the “Retire Today” podcast if you've been enjoying these episodes! Homeschool Mama Self-Care: Turning Challenges into Charms

Today, my homeschooler gets accepted to university—his preferred program for the fall, engineering at the University of Victoria. That sentence should read like pure celebration. And it is. But the truth? This moment arrived carrying far more than simple joy. What Even Are These Feelings? From a woman who transacts in emotions, who holds other women’s emotions, who speaks on emotional regulation every day—I’m not sure what these feelings even are. Elation. Anticipation. Excitement. Pride. Gratefulness. Sadness that this day has finally arrived. He’s my baby. My youngest. My last. All the feels wrapped up in tears and hugs and the quiet ache of knowing that a long season of life is shifting once more. Sometimes the most honest thing we can say isn’t “I feel happy” or “I feel sad.” Sometimes it’s simply: This is a lot. And I’m letting myself feel all of it. This is the work I do with women every day—helping them listen inward, honour what’s real, and trust their emotional experience rather than trying to tidy it up into something more presentable. Today, I’m practicing what I teach. When a Homeschooler Gets Accepted to University Once upon a time, I saw my son play with Legos for a decade. I watched him tinker with small machines. Build furniture. Try to understand why things weren’t working, then unbuild blenders and computers to figure them out. Then learn how to build a computer himself. I watched him understand the strategy behind chess and play—and win—against others decades older than him. Watched him crack the code behind all sorts of games. And I watched him fall in love with physics. From Usborne books when he was seven, to university-level physics and math classes when he was fifteen. When I asked him if the workload of those classes was just too much—because they really are exceptionally a lot—he acknowledged that yes, they are. But he really loves learning these things. The proof? He’s self-motivated. And he keeps trying to capture my raptured fascination with his stories from math and physics classes. Today, that same child was accepted into engineering at the University of Victoria. And in just a few months, he’ll have a hefty ride to class every day for the next five years—because the university is ten hours away. (And of course, he can’t leave home to do that;) The Long Arc of Homeschool Motherhood If I’m honest, there were moments I could have marked a calendar and begun a private countdown to this season—the season where the last child begins to leave. Culturally, we talk about this as a milestone. The “empty nest.” The transition. Or just a rite of passage. But for me, this isn’t about cultural narratives. This is about the truth that I always wanted to be a mother. Not just a mother, but a present one. An engaged one. A mother who chose to build a life that allowed me to be with my children fully—especially through homeschooling. A mother who wanted to savour the days, even the hard ones. Homeschooling has never been easy. It has been meaningful, beautiful, stretching, exhausting, sacred work. There are days when you question everything: Am I doing enough? Am I missing something important? Perhaps I am failing my kids without realising it? Why does this feel so hard when I care so deeply? If you’ve homeschooled—or even deeply parented—you know this interior dialogue well. When Motherhood Becomes More Than Motherhood In my work with homeschool moms, I see another layer often present beneath the surface. Many women I walk alongside did not experience secure, emotionally safe childhoods. They grew up unsure of whether they were truly seen, heard, understood, or emotionally prioritized. Other people’s emotions took up most of the space in their homes. Their own needs were minimized, dismissed, or simply overlooked. Then they become mothers. And suddenly, motherhood becomes not just a role—but a mission. A redemption story. A chance to finally do it differently. To create the childhood they themselves needed. To pour in everything they never received. That depth of investment can be profoundly beautiful. It can also be incredibly heavy. You carry the invisible weight of wanting to get it right. You want your children to feel safe, known, cherished. And of course, you want to protect them from harm. And you want to give them every opportunity. You want to ensure that your love translates into their lifelong well-being. So when people casually suggest, “You should get a hobby for when your kids leave,” it often misses the point entirely. This was never just a phase of life. This was your life. When Your Homeschooler Gets Accepted to University — and Actually Leaves You hear it all along: They grow up so fast. One day they’ll leave. You nod. You know it intellectually. But then the first one leaves. And it’s not theoretical anymore. Then the second. Then the third. And suddenly you find yourself here, watching your homeschooler get accepted to university and prepare to take his next steps away from home. All those years of homeschooling, of conversations, of car rides, of frustration and laughter and connection and doubt and persistence—they weren’t wasted. They were forming something. All those years of allowing him to follow his curiosity—from Legos to blenders to computers to physics—weren’t indulgent. They were equipping a human being to live his life on purpose. My husband said it beautifully today: Today we celebrate. We celebrate his effort, his capacities, the interests he pursued, the time we gave him to develop them, and the ways we were able to support him to get here. And I would add this: We celebrate with gratitude for the life entrusted to us. For the child we were given. For the journey we were allowed to walk together. Yesterday, We Brought Home a Healthy Baby There is another layer to this story that makes today feel even more sacred. When Zachary was born, he was rushed into the NICU. His colour wasn’t right. Tests were run. We waited, we watched, and we prayed. For several days, uncertainty was ours—until finally the echocardiogram confirmed that nothing was wrong with his heart. Nothing was wrong with his heart. I still hold the weight of that sentence. When he was permitted, my husband held him skin to skin for hours—this tiny, vulnerable, beautiful baby: 22 inches long, 8 pounds 7 ounces of brand-new life. We drove home three days later than expected. But we drove home with our healthy baby. Our fourth child. Our first son. My husband had suggested the name Zachary years before—even before we were engaged. He’d always loved that name. And when we anticipated our fourth child, we hoped we would be able to raise a son. We were given a little boy. And we named him Zachary. “God has remembered.” It feels like yesterday we brought him home. And now—in what feels like the very next day—we are planning to drive him to university. That same child, now standing over six feet tall, solid and capable, preparing to move ten hours away to study engineering. The name we gave him carries weight I couldn’t have fully understood then. The Truth Beneath the Success Story It would be easy to turn this into a polished success narrative: “Look, homeschooling works. Look at the outcome.” But that’s not the real story. The real story is this: We didn’t homeschool perfectly. I doubted myself often. We adjusted constantly and made mistakes. We learned alongside our kids. However, we learned to prioritize connection over performance. Also, we allowed space for interests to emerge rather than forcing rigid paths. We let him play with Legos for a decade—even when well-meaning voices suggested it was time to move on to “more serious” pursuits. And we let him take apart blenders and computers—even when it meant occasionally having broken appliances scattered across the dining room table. We supported him taking university-level courses at fifteen—even when the workload seemed overwhelming—because he loved it. Because he kept coming home eager to share what he’d learned. And somehow, through all of that imperfect, earnest, committed living—we arrived here. Not with children who followed identical paths, but with young adults who know themselves, who can think critically, who are willing to take responsibility for their lives. That matters more to me than any transcript ever could. For the Mom Who Is Still in the Thick of It If you’re reading this while surrounded by math worksheets, sibling tension, unfinished laundry, and self-doubt, I want you to hear this gently: You are not failing because this is hard, and you are not doing it wrong because you feel overwhelmed, and you are not behind because your journey looks different. The work you’re doing is slow, invisible, relational work. It doesn’t produce instant metrics. It shapes hearts, minds, resilience, identity, and belonging—over time. When your child spends hours on something that seems frivolous—Legos, Minecraft, taking things apart—you’re not wasting their education. You may be nurturing the very curiosity that will one day lead them to their calling. When they want to dive deep into subjects that feel advanced or “too much”—and you worry about the workload—trust their intrinsic motivation. If they love it, if they’re self-driven, you’re witnessing passion, not pressure. And one day, often much faster than you expect, you may find yourself watching your homeschooler get accepted to university, looking back in awe at the human beings who emerged from your care. You may feel joy, and grief, and pride. You may feel disoriented. And you may feel everything all at once. That would be normal. Why I Continue This Work This is why I continue to walk alongside homeschool moms. Not because I believe homeschooling is a panacea — it’s not. Home education can not promise you flawless outcomes. But because I believe in supporting women as whole humans while they raise whole humans. Because motherhood deserves more than survival mode. Homeschool families deserve emotional support, not just academic strategy. Because women deserve space to explore their identity beyond holding their homes, their families, their worlds together — that invisible load of motherhood. And because sometimes, the greatest evidence that your work mattered isn’t found in awards or accolades—but in the momentous realization that your child is ready to live their own life. Even if that life is ten hours away. Today, I celebrate Zachary. And I honour every mother who has poured herself into the sacred, exhausting, beautiful work of raising humans who will one day leave. And when they tell you that they are going to grow up, when they tell you they want to apply to university, say the words that only you will know are exactly the right words for that moment: just say NO. (Oh, I mean, celebrate with them, celebrate yourself too, all that you’ve done!) Congratulations, Zach. We are so very proud of you. Send us a textIn this episode, Kay Suthar sits down with Andrew Miller to explore the one element that truly sets businesses up for long-term success  and why money alone is a dangerously incomplete definition of success. Andrew challenges the traditional view of achievement and shares why so many “successful” people still feel stressed, disconnected, and unfulfilled. Together, they unpack the business enjoyment model, the role of vulnerability in building meaningful relationships, and how aligning your mind, heart, and gut changes not just how you do business  but how you live your life. This conversation is a powerful reminder that business growth is inseparable from personal growth. What to expect in this episode:(00:00) – Why success doesn't eliminate stress (04:30) – The danger of defining success by money alone (08:20) – Purpose as the anchor for business and life (12:40) – Vulnerability and the richness of relationships (16:10) – Looking out for yourself vs. looking out for others (19:30) – The Three Nots that drive human behaviour (22:50) – Why business is really a journey of self-discoveryAbout Andrew MillerAndrew Miller is an author, accountant, coach, and change practitioner who has spent over a decade exploring what it truly means to enjoy life and business. Retirement Revealed
Why Retirement Planning Needs More Than Hope (and a Better Soundtrack) with Jesse Hurst

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2026 30:13

Author Jesse Hurst explains how retirement planning helps reduce the guesswork of retiring through his book “PopEnomics”. A lot of people approach financial planning with one big fear: that it's going to feel restrictive. Budgets. Rules. Spreadsheets. Being told what you can't do with your money. But in this episode of Retire Today, I sat down with Impel Wealth Management president and author of “PopEnomics”Jesse Hurst to talk about why that assumption gets things exactly backward — and how the right kind of planning actually creates freedom. As Jesse put it early in our conversation, “A lot of people think financial planning is very constrictive… and I think it's exactly the opposite. I think it's very freeing.” Why Guessing Is the Default (and the Problem) Most people don't lack motivation. They lack clarity. Jesse explained that many retirees have vague hopes rather than defined goals. “Someday I want to retire and live a comfortable life,” sounds nice — but it's not a plan. Without specifics, people end up guessing on some of the most important decisions of their financial lives. How much should I save?Should I prioritize paying off the mortgage? Is Roth or pre-tax better for me?Am I saving enough — or too much? Without a defined target, people default to hearsay. “My coworker did this.” “I read an article that said 8% is enough.” That's not planning — it's outsourcing your decisions to someone else's guess. Why Stories Stick When Numbers Don't Jesse has a way with analogies. By tying retirement planning ideas to pop culture — music, movies, and familiar stories — he finds people actually remember them. During the COVID period, Jesse began using pop-culture analogies more intentionally. One comparison between Federal Reserve policy and the movie Animal House took off online — and made him realize he'd found a powerful teaching tool. That insight ultimately led to his book PopEnomics, where retirement planning meets rock anthems, movie classics, and everyday analogies. Access to Information Isn't the Same as Wisdom One of the most important observations Jesse shared came from reflecting on his decades in the profession. Early in his career, the challenge was simply educating people about what options existed. Today, the challenge is the opposite. “There's a big difference between access to information and the wisdom to apply it,” Jesse said. Retirees today are overwhelmed with data — articles, headlines, opinions — but often still unsure what applies to them. That's where planning shifts from information to interpretation. The Retirement Puzzle Jesse described retirement planning as a puzzle — one where each piece matters. You can't decide how to invest if you don't know when you'll retire. You can't know how much risk to take if you don't know when you'll need the money. You can't spend confidently if you don't know whether your income supports it. One story he shared involved a couple who lost track of where they stood financially after COVID, inflation, and market volatility. Using an airport analogy, Jesse explained, “If you don't know where you are, you can't figure out how to get to your gate.” Clarity begins with knowing your starting point. The Saver's Mindset — and the Permission Problem Many people who retire successfully built wealth through discipline — spending less than they earned, avoiding debt, and saving consistently. But those same habits can make it emotionally difficult to switch from accumulation to spending. As Jesse explained, “They have a hard time giving themselves permission to spend.” He shared a powerful story of longtime clients who had ample income and assets — but struggled to enjoy them. The breakthrough came when they realized that if they didn't use their money intentionally, someone else eventually would. That shift — from fear to permission — is often one of the most important transitions in retirement. The Bottom Line Financial planning isn't about restriction. It's about clarity. When you know what you're saving for, what you've already done, and what your money can support, decisions become easier. Spending becomes intentional. And retirement becomes something you can enjoy — not just hope works out. Don't forget to leave a rating for the “Retire Today” podcast if you've been enjoying these episodes! Jesse is joined by Jeremy Keil—Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Analyst, author of Retire Today, and host of the Retirement Revealed podcast—for a wide-ranging conversation that reframes how people should think about retirement decisions long before and long after the final day of work. Together, they explore why most people retire earlier than planned, why longevity is so often misunderstood, and how flawed assumptions about life expectancy, Social Security, and taxes can quietly undermine otherwise solid plans. Jeremy introduces the concept of "retirement longevity" as both when retirement starts and how long it may last, emphasizing the importance of personalized life expectancy modeling, joint longevity for couples, and treating Social Security as insurance rather than an investment. The discussion also dives deep into Jeremy's five-step Retirement Master Plan—starting with spending, then income, tax planning, investing, and legacy—highlighting why tax strategy and Roth conversions are often the most powerful yet overlooked levers in retirement planning. Throughout the episode, Jesse and Jeremy blend technical insight with behavioral clarity, addressing the emotional hurdles retirees face, from fear of running out of money to the identity shift from saver to spender, ultimately offering a grounded, practical roadmap for building confidence and clarity in retirement. Key Takeaways: • Average life expectancy statistics are misleading for near-retirees. Personalized longevity estimates are far more useful than population averages. • Couples must plan around joint life expectancy, not individual longevity. • Current take-home pay is a practical proxy for estimating retirement lifestyle spending. • Roth conversions are situational tools, not universally good strategies. The timing and size of Roth conversions matter as much as the decision to do them. • Many retirees struggle emotionally with shifting from saving to spending. The healthiest mindset shift is from "saver" or "spender" to lifelong "planner." Retirement Revealed

Happiness expert Monique Rhodes explains why retirement often feels disorienting at first — and how creating a personal retirement roadmap can turn this transition into one of the most fulfilling stages of life. Retirement is often marketed as the ultimate reward. After decades of work, deadlines, and responsibility, you finally arrive at a chapter filled with freedom, rest, and happiness. But for many people, that moment doesn't feel the way they expected. In this episode of Retire Today, I sat down with Monique Rhodes, a happiness expert who works with people around the world — especially those approaching or entering retirement — to talk about why this transition can feel unsettling and how to approach it with intention. Why Retirement Can Feel So Uncomfortable For years, work provides structure, identity, and a built-in sense of purpose. Then one day, it's gone. Monique explained that retirement often removes all of that at once. “The structure, the identity, the daily sense of purpose — they all fall away at the same time,” she said. What's left can feel like freedom… or confusion. In fact, research shows that many people experience lower happiness in the first year of retirement than when they were working. Feelings of restlessness, anxiety, loneliness, and even grief are common — but rarely talked about. This doesn't mean retirement was a mistake. It means the transition requires more than financial preparation alone. Comfort vs. Happiness One of the most thought-provoking ideas Monique shared is that too much comfort can actually work against happiness. She described how modern life is designed to remove friction — from climate-controlled homes to effortless entertainment. But living without any “edge” can dull creativity, resilience, and engagement. “If we're consistently living in comfort, we lose our ability to adapt,” she explained. Happiness, she argues, comes from a balance — not too tense, not too relaxed. Monique used powerful metaphors throughout the conversation, from surfing ocean waves to tuning a guitar string. Too loose or too tight, and it doesn't work. The same is true for life in retirement. Retirement Is Not a Holiday — It's a Redesign Many people enter retirement expecting it to feel like a permanent vacation. Monique sees this expectation create unnecessary disappointment. “Retirement is sold to us as a never-ending holiday,” she said. “But when that structure disappears overnight, people are suddenly faced with the question of who they are.” This is where her Retirement Roadmap comes in — a framework designed to help people intentionally rebuild purpose, routines, relationships, and meaning. Rather than drifting through unstructured time, retirees are encouraged to create days that feel energizing and aligned with who they are now — not who their job required them to be. Rebuilding Purpose From the Inside Out One of the most powerful moments in the conversation was when Monique talked about building a new relationship with yourself. After years of serving careers, businesses, and families, many retirees struggle to answer a simple question: What do I enjoy? Monique often starts by asking clients to think back to childhood interests — art, music, movement, creativity — and explore those again without pressure. “Your purpose isn't gone,” she said. “It's just no longer handed to you by a job description.” She emphasized that this phase of life offers something rare: the freedom to choose intentionally — where you live, how you spend your time, who you invest energy in, and what brings joy. Three Questions Worth Asking Toward the end of our conversation, Monique shared three questions she believes are foundational for a fulfilling retirement: Where do I want to be that makes me happiest? What do I want to do that makes me happiest? Who do I want to be with that makes me happiest? These questions don't have one-time answers. They evolve — and that's part of the beauty of this stage of life. The Bottom Line Retirement isn't just a financial transition. It's a psychological and emotional one as well. When approached consciously, it can become one of the most liberating and meaningful chapters of life — not because everything is perfect, but because you're living with intention. Hey Heal Squad!  Have you ever felt like you lost your mojo at some point along the way? Yeah,  it happens to all of us… even Maria. In fact, Maria didn't even realize she had lost hers until she started finding it again. Today, Maria gets deep about how she found her mojo after nearly a decade of doggy-paddling through life and health challenges. Ya know,  those seasons where things feel like they're finally going right, and then suddenly - Boom! Crash! Sound familiar? But Maria has finally said buh-bye to that and shares what's helping the pendulum finally swing the other way. Hint, Hint: It didn't come from just one thing, rather six! From supporting her body, to creating dedicated space in her home, and  building systems that remind her what matters most. We're delighted to welcome back Dr Peter Attia to High Performance, one of the leading voices in modern medicine and longevity. Known for his rigorous, evidence-based approach to health, Peter has built his work around a simple but demanding question: how do we live longer and better? In this episode, Peter dives deep into what truly drives long-term health. He explains why exercise remains non-negotiable, how strength and cardiovascular fitness underpin independence as we age, and why the new wave of metabolic drugs are changing the conversation around heart health, cognition, and disease, without replacing the need for movement and training.Peter also shares how he thinks about aging in practical terms, introducing the idea of “backcasting” from later life to guide the choices we make today. He breaks down which supplements actually matter, why he's sceptical of health fads, and how balance, adaptability, and emotional wellbeing play a bigger role in longevity than most people realise.Grounded, thoughtful, and highly practical, this episode offers a clear framework for protecting your body, your mind, and your quality of life, now and in the decades to come.

Grab your copy of Jamie Winship's book Living Fearless! Podcast: Stop Negative Thinking for You & Your KidsShow Notes: Hey everyone, Kerry Beck here with Homeschool Coffee Break, where we help you stop the overwhelm so you can actually take a coffee break. We talked last week about lies in our head and lies that our kids believe. This week, we're going to get to the hopeful part. That may have been a little depressing. We're going to get to the hopeful part. We're going to come talk to God about what our identity is in Him, what His calling is for us, and how we can replace those lies.Jamie Winship calls it identity exchange. We are going to exchange those lies for truth.Learning from Living FearlessWhat I'm sharing are things that I have learned from a man named Jamie Winship. He's written a book called Living Fearless. You can get the link to it in the show notes, and I highly recommend it. A few years ago, I bought a copy for every one of my children, and for my parents and my sister as well, because it had such a huge impact on us.We're going to talk today about how God actually gives you a new name, a true identity, and how to listen for it, how to find out what it is. We're going to start with Revelation 2. This is where Jesus is writing to the different churches, and he's written to a church called Pergamum. He says, you have remained true to my name, to God's name. You did not renounce your faith in me. And that was a good thing. But at the end of his letter, he has this to say in Revelation 2:17: Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious, I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away up in heaven. I will give to each of you a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands, except the one who receives it.You may be going, what is this white stone he's talking about? And how do we get a new name? Because that new name has something to do with your identity. Well, in ancient Greece, the jury members would give a white stone if they were going to acquit the man. They would give a black stone if the defendant was guilty. In ancient Rome, they had a custom of awarding white stones to the winner of athletic events, and their name was written on that stone. We want to talk about that new name, because we walk in newness of life. We walk in a new covenant. We're going to put away our sins. We're going to leave our past in the past, and we are going to walk in newness of life. That's what I want for you, Mom. That's what I want for your children as well. Can You Really Hear from God?If you've ever wondered, can I really hear God about my identity? How do I know? Sometimes we don't truly believe God and what He is saying. We say He can do the impossible, but we don't really think it for us.Let me share a couple stories that Jamie Winship shares. He met a man in Washington, D.C. who had been working with Congress, and this man comes up to him, like a bodybuilder, very well-built, very healthy. And he says, how can I know if I can really hear from God? And he said, well, you can come with me to a mission, because Jamie Winship had worked with the CIA over in the Middle East for decades, and he was now helping Congress with some things about working with conflict. He and this Jason Bourne dude and a Navy guy, they all got dropped off in Northern Africa, pitch dark. They get there, they're staying in tents, their host would fix their meals, and they would fix 4 plates. And the Jason Bourne guy would go, why is there someone else? Why do they keep fixing 4? There's only three of us.Eventually, after a few days, he says, well, go ask them. Since this guy could speak that language, he says, why do you have four plates? Well, it's for your security detail. He's like, what are you talking about? Well, long story short, they're like, the guy that's guarding y'all outside. And he's like, what does he look like? He's the big, bulky guy that's protecting you. And what is he? He has a sword.Come to find out, they could see this angel of God that was protecting Jamie and this Jason Bourne guy and the other guy from enemy attack, and he had a sword. Muslims believe in visions like that. They believe these things. They believe you can hear from the gods. And they could see this angel, even though Jamie and Jason Bourne person couldn't.But when he heard that, Jason Bourne is like, okay, how do I hear God? I want to know. How do I hear God? And basically, Jamie says, what about your situation? He's like, why can't we have kids? And he says, you're asking the wrong question. And for some of you, you're asking the wrong question when it comes to the problems in your life, your identity. You're saying, why, why, why? That is the wrong question. Here are the two questions that Jamie suggests. We need to say, God, what do you want me to know, God? What do you want me to do? And that was a question that I actually wrestled with. This morning, again, on my walk, I was gonna go right into prayer. I'm like, no, I need to listen to God.A lot of believers, we all believe, yes, God's powerful, we've seen Him do miracles, all this stuff, but we don't really believe that we can hear from God. And if we don't believe that, we believe in a weak God. I do believe that I can hear from God. We believe in a God that can do it for everyone else, but not for us. Or that He will do miracles, but I don't know about for us.Well, that is not total faith. Total faith is believing that God can do miracles. And we need to let God tell us what He is doing, instead of our past dictating what we do. Instead of our failures dictating what we do. Instead of our fears. Do you have fears about homeschooling? Or raising kids? You see, this is what leads to bad identity, to the lies that we talked about. But when you live from what God says you are, you are going to become more creative, more resilient, you're going to have more peace, even in the hard circumstances. I am a product of that as well. You see, you may be great at multitasking, teaching, managing your home, but you still feel like a fraud.Identity Exchange is going to God and letting him rename you. Like that white stone with a new name. The Story of HamzaThere was a young man in the Middle East that Jamie ran across. I actually shared this story at Homeschool Superheroes about 3 or 4 years ago, and in the chat, people are like, is this for real? Is this a real story? Is she really telling the truth? And yes, it is real, and you can read about it or listen to it when Jamie tells that story. But there was a man named Hamza. He had found a Bible at a hotel, and somehow he connected with Jamie, and he's like, who is this man? And they go, well, do you want to hear from him? Or do you want us to tell you about him? I want to hear from him, talking about Jesus, because he had read parts of the New Testament. They got together, and they didn't tell him what they knew about Jesus. They were like, we're gonna let God speak. And what they did was they prayed and said, okay, God, Hamza really wants to hear from you. Would you please speak your truth to Him and let him hear that?Would that be a scary prayer? In the United States, we don't pray that. You know why? We're afraid God's not going to show up. We're afraid God's not going to show up for me, for our friends, for our own children. We're afraid he's not going to speak.Well, they weren't afraid, and God has shown up over and over. I've heard many stories that He has shared of Him speaking, and Hamza heard, and he began to grow in his new identity in Jesus Christ. He has walked through so many hardships. His family tried to kill him several times, like, throw him off a cliff, shoot him with a gun, and somehow he's made it through all of this because he walks in his identity of Christ, and what God spoke to him.His hardships and fear began to change as he learned to listen to God's voice and receive that new identity of who He is in Christ Jesus. This has opened doors to things he would never imagine, and it can be the same with you in your homeschool. If God can reach a young man, a Muslim man, being killed by his family because he has faith in Jesus, and even more dangerous situations, he can speak to you, tired homeschool mom, in your minivan, or at the kitchen table. My Story of Identity ExchangeI know from experience that God has spoken to me. I don't know how many of you know my story, but about nine and a half years ago, my husband left. We'd been married for 31 years. I'd be a very rich person if I had money from all my friends that looked at me and went, you and Steve? No, that's not true. Because they'd seen a marriage that seemed to be working. But I felt, when I found out he was leaving, totally rejected. I'd never felt depression before. I felt hopeless. And I could have walked in those lies. I probably did for a while. My friend says, Kerry, you were walking in PTSD for a few years. That's probably true. But I began praying for him all the time. I pray for him every single day. Sometimes it's a quick prayer, sometimes it's prayers of tears, but it is a prayer for his soul. His soul needs to go back to accepting the redemption that He has through Jesus Christ. I also pray for reconciliation for our marriage and our family. And there are people that are like, just get over it and move on, and go find someone else. No.I made a covenant with God, a three-way covenant. Not a contract, where if he does something wrong, it's broken, go off and do whatever. A covenant. God's never broken His covenant with Israel. He's remained faithful, even through discipline. And I decided that is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna remain faithful to our covenant. God and I are still waiting for Steve's return. The question isn't why, God? Why is this happening? It's, God, what do you want me to know? What do you want me to do about this? And then let God work in and through me through the Holy Spirit. You see, I need to focus on me growing with God, and I'll let God deal with Steve. I believe He is faithful to the promises He's made, Steve and me. God says, I will never leave you or abandon you. I will work on you until the day of Christ Jesus.Over time, I've learned who I am. What is my identity? And it's not the same as for you, but I will share mine. I believe I'm a warrior, a warrior on her knees, a teacher. A teacher of women and kids, both online and in person. An encourager. I never wanted to be a counselor. That's the thing I ever wanted to do. But God has used me to counsel kids and women. And I've pressed into that. And I'm a networker. I'm an organizer networker, trying to pull people together, trying to get things, not programs, but relationships. That's where it's all about, a networker of relationships. You need to know your identity comes first, and then the outcome. I am a prayer warrior for Steve and for our family on my knees pretty every day. Again, sometimes there are quick prayers, but a lot of times, when I go for a walk, that's my prayer time. When I sit at the kitchen table, that's my prayer and Bible time. That is who God made me, a warrior of people's souls. A warrior that fights and contends for people's souls, starting with my own marriage and husband, and family, kids, and grandkids. We haven't seen reconciliation, but I know God is good, I know God loves Steve, and He is still working, and I totally believe that He is reconciling our marriage. In the middle of my pain, it wasn't why God. Well, yeah, I had asked that, honestly. Why is this happening to me? It's not supposed to be like this. But I have learned it's more important for me to keep my eyes upward and my faith in Jesus. Because this world is passing away, and there is nothing that I need to do. I need to change my identity and not believe the lies that I was a terrible wife or a terrible mom. I've been rejected multiple times since Steve left by him, neighbors, church, family members, and it hurts. But I keep going back to God, because He's the one that's going to move me forward. I can't change people. I can just deal with myself. And He will meet me in the messiness of my broken marriage, my sleeping marriage, my destroyed marriage. He will meet you in your homeschool. He will meet you in your family, in your home, in your marriage, and in your heart.Simple Steps to Get UnstuckThere are two key questions you need to be asking yourself. Not why, although you can ask why. I'm not expecting to, well, I do, I'll be honest, the reason why is so I would trust Him, and I would grow closer to Him. I would never wish my life on anyone. But I wouldn't trade it for anything. Because I am closer to God than I have ever been. So, God, what do you want me to do about this situation, your situation? God, what do you want me to know, and then what do you want me to do?Your child melts down over math. The old question is, why is this always happening? What is wrong with us? The new question is, God, what do you want me to know about my child? What do you want me to do? Comfort? Pause, change the approach, stop doing math. I did that for a whole year, actually, when I had a child that wasn't doing well with math, and had a bad attitude about it.Maybe skip it first. You're a gentle shepherd, not a drill sergeant. Then speak that truth out loud. Start acting as a gentle shepherd and not that frazzled failure. Just like I did. What I want you to do is I want you to look at the lies, pick one, and write a truth, hopefully a Bible verse that will go along with that truth. And then once you've wrestled through this, work with each of your children. What is the lie they are believing? I can't do it. I'm not smart enough. I need this, or I need that. I don't want this, I don't want that. Blaming people, whatever the lie is.Do it with your kids as well, and write a truth down, and say it out loud. Here are the simple steps so that you can get unstuck with the lies that you're believing. Number one, name one lie. That was last week's episode. Ask the two questions. What, God, do you want me to know about this? What do you want me to do about this? Then, I want you to find a truth and write it down, and put it somewhere that you're going to see it every single day. Kitchen sink, I have some in the bathroom window, I actually have some in the kitchen sink, I have some in my car. So I have different truths that I will see at different times of my day. And then I want you to say it aloud every single day.Do this with your kids, maybe at the breakfast table. They read out loud that Bible verse or that truth about themselves, maybe at their desk, if they have a desk, and they are going to read that out loud as well, before they get started on their homeschool.Speak the Truth Over Your LifeIf you want more ideas, you can get Jamie's book, Living Fearless, that'll be in the show notes. If you want these free things here that I have, I'm going to read these in a second, then you can get those, the link is in the show notes as well. It's just a printable, and there is a page for you to write your own truth. You don't need mine, but mine can be just sort of a sample. And I'll close with this. Like Jesus, I am chosen by God to be holy. I am chosen by God for great honor. I trust in Jesus, therefore I am not put to shame. God loves me and always takes care of me.I am precious to God, because He bought me with Jesus' blood. I am a daughter of the king, a princess. I live in the light shining for Jesus all day long. I control my thoughts, my words, my food, my drink.I receive God's mercy and grace, so I give grace, mercy, and forgiveness to others. I lead my case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. I speak with words. I speak with pure and reverent behavior, and with a gentle and quiet spirit. I wait quietly on God.Some things I have to really work on, and when I'm really struggling with a lie at that time, I may just pull that one out and say it every day, sometimes multiple times. I am patient. I am kind. I always forgive. I forget offenses against me. And some of you are like, I can't forget that. Well, you know what? If I have the Holy Spirit inside of me, I have the power that God has inside of me, and I can overcome, and God can take those thoughts away. He takes other thoughts away that I forget. Surely He can take those offenses, and I forget them. The Holy Spirit renews my mind and attitudes every day. God never leaves me, never abandons me, never fails me. I listen well. I trust in God to fight my battles. He wins my battles. Thanks for spending time with me. If any of this hits home, please share this with just one friend, maybe another homeschool mom, that this might encourage. That would mean the world to me. Retirement Revealed
Growing Your Cash as an Asset in Retirement with Gary Zimmerman

Retirement Revealed

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2026 34:41

Gary Zimmerman of Max® explains how to utilize your cash asset in retirement. Cash is one of the most overlooked assets in retirement. Here's how retirees can earn thousands more in interest while keeping their money safe and FDIC-insured. Many retirees spend years carefully managing their investments — stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts get plenty of attention. But there's one asset class that often gets ignored: cash. In this episode of Retire Today, I'm joined by Gary Zimmerman, founder and CEO of Max® to talk about why so many Americans are earning next to nothing on their bank money — and how that quiet mistake can cost retirees tens of thousands of dollars over time. As Gary explains early in the conversation, “People think that the bigger the bank, the safer it is. And that's patently not true.” In fact, many of the banks that failed during past financial crises were among the largest institutions. Why Cash Matters More in Retirement Cash plays a unique role in retirement. It provides liquidity, stability, and peace of mind — especially when markets are volatile. But that doesn't mean cash has to sit idle. Gary shared that after years as an advisor, he started getting a flood of calls from clients during the COVID period. Their CDs were maturing, and rates were dropping instead of rising. “They were missing out on thousands of dollars in interest,” he said. At the same time, trillions of dollars across the U.S. were sitting in bank accounts earning close to zero — while other savers were earning closer to 4% in the same type of FDIC-insured accounts. That gap is not about risk. It's about awareness and access. FDIC Insurance: Safety Without Sacrificing Yield One of the most important parts of the conversation focused on FDIC insurance. Many people believe that as long as their money is at a big-name bank, it's automatically safe. But FDIC insurance has limits — typically $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. As I shared in the episode, I regularly see “everyday millionaires” with far more than $250,000 sitting in bank-type accounts — without full insurance coverage. Gary explained how spreading cash across multiple institutions increases FDIC protection and improves interest rates at the same time. “The more diversified you are, the more guarantees you get from the FDIC,” he said. Why Banks Pay So Little (And Why They Can) A question many retirees ask is simple:If higher rates exist, why don't banks automatically pay them? Gary's answer was refreshingly blunt. Banks don't raise rates unless they need your money. When a bank pays 0.1% or 0.2%, it's often a signal: “They're telling you they don't want your money.” Online banks, smaller institutions, and rate marketplaces compete aggressively for deposits — and that competition benefits savers who are willing to look beyond their local branch. As Gary put it, “There's an actual market for your money. Just like selling a house, you have to put your money on the market to get the best price.” DIY vs. Using a Service Could retirees do all of this on their own? Yes.But should they? Gary compared the process to constantly switching phone plans or insurance providers. It works — but it requires attention, time, and discipline. Rates change, banks create teaser accounts, and some institutions quietly lower yields after a few months. Max® was designed to automate that process. As Gary described it, the goal is to “spend five or ten minutes thinking about cash, then never think about it again.” For many clients, that convenience translates into meaningful results. Gary shared that a retiree with $250,000 in cash could earn roughly $10,000 more per year, or $100,000 over a decade, simply by managing cash more effectively. The Behavioral Finance Problem Nobody Talks About One of my favorite parts of the conversation focused on behavioral finance. People say they like their bank because it feels familiar. But when asked how they actually interact with it, the answer is usually: “I use the app.” At that point, loyalty becomes expensive. As Gary summed it up, “The bank owes you nothing. You owe the bank nothing.” Your savings should work as hard as you did to earn it. The Bottom Line Cash isn't boring — it's powerful when used correctly. For retirees, optimizing cash can mean more flexibility, less risk, and thousands of dollars in additional income over time — without chasing returns or increasing exposure. In this throwback episode, we're revisiting one of the most foundational lessons for anyone who wants to grow more of their own food — not just a handful of tomatoes or a quick salad garden (though that's a great place to begin!), but a true, abundant harvest that feeds your family. I'm sharing the nine core principles I've relied on for nearly twenty-seven years of gardening here on our homestead. These steps will help you create consistent, reliable harvests no matter what the season throws your way. If you've ever struggled with uneven yields, wished your garden produced more predictably, or wanted a clear roadmap for planning a productive garden, this episode lays out the framework you've been missing. We'll cover the habits and systems that set you up for long-term success — understanding your soil, planning your garden space intentionally, choosing the right varieties, and building a repeatable method you can use year after year. Whether you're gardening in a small backyard, a suburban lot, or a larger homestead, these nine steps will help you grow more food with less overwhelm. It's an episode worth revisiting each season as you plan ahead for 2026 and beyond. For more information and any links mentioned, visit the blog post here: https://melissaknorris.com/493
