Novelist Emma Pei Yin ran away from Hong Kong as a teenager to start fresh in Australia. But she found herself repeatedly drawn back home whenever she put pen to paper.Emma grew up in England and Hong Kong. But her life in Hong Kong wasn't so much about the neon skyscrapers as it was about her family's ancestral village, tucked away in the New Territories.Emma spent her school holidays there with her grandparents, learning how to take care of the family cemetery and joining in Chinese Festivals.Sometimes her grandfather would share his memories of the Second World War, when the Japanese military invaded and occupied Hong Kong.As Emma became into a teenager, her relationship with her parents deteriorated. She eventually decided to leave them and Hong Kong, coming to Australia to make a life for herself as a writer. But whenever she wrote, Emma found herself drawn back to Hong Kong; to the hundreds of islands, the fishing villages on stilts, the mountains, woodlands and beaches – all the things that tourists who think of Hong Kong as a city of neon lights and free Wi-fi don't know about.Content warning: This episode of Conversations contains discussion about sexual assault.Further informationWhen Sleeping Women Wake is published by Hachette.Help and support is always available. In this episode of French Insider, Agathe Benoit, Chief Operating Officer and founding team member of Giftory, joins Sheppard Mullin attorneys Karl Buhler and Inès Briand to discuss the company's business model and the challenges of launching the “experience gifting” concept in the United States. What We Discussed in This Episode: What is Giftory, what are its core offerings, and where does it operate? What motivated the company to expand into the corporate gifting and B2B market? How does Giftory ensure a premium experience for both the gift giver and the recipient? What are the advantages of purchasing through Giftory, rather than directly from the provider? What key achievements and challenges stand out in the process of building and expanding the business? What advice would you offer others looking to launch a business in the United States? BEST OF TST: The sudden popularity of Labubu toys has resulted in grown adults lining up in the early morning hours to acquire as many of these little monsters as possible. Although upon first glance they appear sort of cute, closer examination will reveal that their apparent smile is actually a sinister grin with razor sharp teeth. Designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, the toys are sold by Pop Mart in collaboration with the artist and in relation to his 2015 book “The Monsters.” Their increasing popularity is a result of celebrities like Rihanna or Dua Lipa flaunting their own, although the trend began when Blackpink k-pop singer Lisa first was spotted with the keychain in April 2024. Each doll comes in a sealed box with no indication of what's inside, meaning each purchase is a mystery. Shoppers are notified of a new drop off of the toy at their local stores via WhatsApp. They then rush to the spot, as one Australian article documented, “at 3am.” Put simply, people are lining up during the “witching hour” to buy a mysterious monster in a box after receiving an oddly timed text in the middle of the night. The atmosphere around these toys is similar to any long gone or persisting product, from Furbys and Beanie Babies to Hello Kitty and Pokemon, but there is something else about these little toys that is anything but friendly. The dolls themselves are not really even monsters, but instead more like little children that appear to be possessed and wearing Teletubbies costumes. Like any good marketing campaign, the product page on Amazon describes their various character stores: one of the leaders, zimomo ventures to the human world where he learns yoga and then brings the practice back to his own world in the forest. The monsters are thus more like fairies, and in fact one description reads: “the elves in the forest are curious about the human world. So, the No. 1 curious player LABUBU gathered her friends and secretly came to the city for an adventure. The goal is absolutely not to be discovered by humans!” The forests are described further as “nordic,” which is the mythological nature that was inspiration for the dolls. It's not just the name zimomo that brings back memories of the Momo Challenge, but the fact that these monsters from another world are essentially being promoted like Momo. Mysterious messages in the middle of the night that prompt half-asleep humans to perform some action - in this case, buy a mysterious box that contains what amounts to a fairy, demon, familiar, or personal spirit charm. This is reminiscent also of the 3am Challenge and the recent Mirror Challenge, where one looks into the mirror for so long they watch their face and reality around them distort. The name LA BU BU is even more telling of an underlying darkness. The LALALOOPSY doll, a girl with no apparent ears, a mouth sewn shut, and black buttons for eyes - something further reminiscent of the movie Carolin where the Beldam Other Mother replaces the girl's eyes (soul) with buttons to trap her in the other world - is a toy about fanciful play through a sort of loopy “Lala-ness.” The LA BU BU is generally said to refer to the same playfulness, though the word “bubu” is both a euphemism for a child's injury, and also holds the meaning of grandmother. In other words, LA GRANDMOTHER, the old crone of the forest. She is also known as Momo, Yamamba, the hag, the Hansel and Gretel Witch, or Baba Yaga. She also shares something in common with La Llorona, Ubume, and Banshee. Perhaps this is all a coincidence, or perhaps Labubu, like Elf on the Shelf, is not something we should be bringing into our homes or carrying with us on our person. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Patrick McGee, author of the best-selling book Apple in China, who tells a riveting story about how Apple almost single-handedly built the advanced electronics industry in China only to find itself trapped in a relationship with an authoritarian state making ever-increasing demands, and giving Beijing power that could be weaponized. Even though China's immense domestic market is hard to resist, this is a cautionary tale for listeners thinking about doing business in China and helps explain how China made progress competing against American tech companies so quickly. Patrick was the Financial Times' principal Apple reporter from 2019 to 2023, where he won a San Francisco Press Club Award for his coverage. He joined the newspaper in 2013, in Hong Kong, before reporting from Germany and California. Previously, he was a bond reporter at The Wall Street Journal. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode celebrate 25 years of In The Mood For Love - director Wong Kar Wai's acclaimed romantic drama starring Maggie Cheung as Mrs Chan and Tony Leung as Mr Chow - two neighbours in 1960s Hong Kong, bonded by a revelation about their respective spouses.Critically beloved on its first release back in 2000, the film is now reaching an entirely new generation of young film fans, thanks in part to its popularity on social media sites like Letterboxd and TikTok. Mark speaks to critic and sometime filmmaker Tony Rayns, who was a key part of Wong Kar-Wai's team for many years, working closely with the director on the English subtitles for his films. Tony gives Mark the inside story of the production of In The Mood For Love, as well as some insight into the enigmatic director's sometimes chaotic working methods. Ellen takes a trip to The Prince Charles Cinema in London's Leicester Square - where film fans in their early 20s have been packing screenings of In The Mood For Love - to try to get a sense of why Wong Kar Wai's modern masterpiece has developed such a devoted fanbase. And she speaks to Paul Vickery - Head of Programming at the Prince Charles - about the film's continuing popularity with audiences. And Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young tells Mark how he fell in love with the work of Wong Kar-Wai - and why he thinks In The Mood For Love is still resonating with young viewers a quarter century on. And you build your product in the facility that is approved by the FDA and they can check the facility, all of that to make sure, you know, that everything is up to that particular standard. But mostly it's up to a skincare company to uphold it. And like, for example, I can tell you currently US company, you know, have about three or four hundred ingredients they're not allowed to use because they're toxic. Mei Yung [00:00:48]: They're highly sensitive like you said. But in Canada there's over a thousand or fifteen hundred that matter. Depends on where you look at. James Kademan [00:01:05]: You have found Authentic Business Adventures, the business program that brings you the struggle stories and triumphant successes of business owners across the land. Downloadable audio episodes can be found in the podcast link funded drawincustomers.com we are locally interwritten by the bank of Sun Prairie Calls on Call Extraordinary answering service as well as the Bold Business book. And today we're welcoming preparing to learn from Mei Young Lee, the founder and CEO of Ageless Zen. So May, how are you doing today? Mei Yung [00:01:36]: I am doing great in this beautiful Lake Tahoe. James Kademan [00:01:41]: Yeah, that's excellent. Glad to hear it. Thanks for being on the show. Why don't you start with the foundation? What is Ageless Zen? Mei Yung [00:01:49]: Well,

Macau–onetime Portuguese colony, now casino hotspot–has long captured the imaginations of travelers, reporters, artists and writers. The city served as the only gateway to China for centuries; then, after the rise of Hong Kong, its slightly seedier vibe made it a popular setting for books, articles and movies exploring the more criminal elements of society. Paul French joins us, once again, to talk about his new book Destination Macao (Blacksmith Books: 2024) the latest book in his Destination series. We chat about colonies and casinos, but also some of the lesser-known parts of Macau's history, like an aborted British attempt to invade Macau in 1808; furious media rumors in 1935 about Japan's interest in buying the colony, and the city's brief time as an aviation hub for the Pan Am Clipper. Paul French was born in London and lived and worked in Shanghai for many years. His book Midnight in Peking was a New York Times Bestseller and a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for July 9th Publish Date: July 9th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, July 9th and Happy Birthday to Tom Hanks I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Austell residents rebel against proposed property tax increase Advanced voting for Public Service Democratic runoff begins Popular eatery Tin Drum expands to Kennesaw All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 1 STORY 1: Austell residents rebel against proposed property tax increase Austell residents packed the Threadmill Complex to protest a proposed 158% property tax hike, which would raise the city’s millage rate from 3.25 to 8.25 mills, generating $3.85M in revenue. City officials, including Mayor Ollie Clemons, defended the increase, citing inflation and a $1.6M budget shortfall. Finance Director Rachel Yarbrough explained the city’s reliance on gas revenue and the need for higher property taxes. Residents voiced concerns about affordability, lack of a city manager, and the sharp increase’s impact, especially on seniors. Clemons assured measures to ease the burden for older residents but emphasized the necessity of the hike to sustain city services. Two more public hearings are scheduled, with the final one on July 14. STORY 2: Advanced voting for Public Service Democratic runoff begins Advanced voting for the Democratic special primary runoff for the District 3 Public Service Commission seat began Monday and runs through July 11, with polling stations open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Keisha Sean Waites, a former Atlanta City Councilwoman, faces clean-energy advocate Peter Hubbard, with the winner advancing to challenge Republican incumbent Fitz Johnson in November. Waites led the initial primary with 47.2% of the vote but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Eligible voters include those who voted Democratic or did not vote in the June 17 primary. Election Day is July 15, and voters must bring valid photo ID and vote at their assigned location. STORY 3: Popular eatery Tin Drum expands to Kennesaw Tin Drum Asian Kitchen has opened a new location in Kennesaw at 1155 Barrett Parkway, offering a variety of Asian dishes from China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Popular menu items include the Singapore curry chow mein and sesame chicken rice bowl, alongside an expansive boba tea bar featuring favorites like brown sugar pearl milk tea. Founded in 2003 by Steven Chan, the restaurant aims to inspire and delight customers with its inclusive mission. Franchise managers Taran and Ramneek Singh, longtime fans, are excited to bring Tin Drum to Kennesaw. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 1 STORY 4: Austell man shot, killed on Fourth of July Cobb Police are investigating the fatal shooting of Cody Chavous, 33, of Austell, in Mableton on Friday. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 300 Concepts 21 Circle, where they found Chavous with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital but later died. The Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation and urges anyone with information to call 770-499-3945. STORY 5: Mableton residents could see new tax as city grapples with $9.5M county agreement Mableton Mayor Michael Owens plans to propose a special service district (SSD) tax to cover a $9.5M payment to Cobb County for police and transportation services through 2026. The SSD would levy a citywide millage rate, targeting funds specifically for public safety. Owens emphasized transparency and fairness, aiming to avoid a general property tax. The city must pay $3M by May 2026 and $6.5M by December 2026, with collections starting soon. Owens seeks a long-term deal with Cobb to stabilize costs and avoid annual renegotiations. The SSD proposal will go before the City Council within 90 days, with revenue projections expected by year-end. Break: STORY 6: Red Cross: Make an immediate difference by giving blood or platelets now The American Red Cross urges donors to give blood or platelets this summer, with Type O blood most needed. Severe weather and summer challenges can deplete supplies, making donations crucial for trauma patients and others. Donors can schedule appointments via RedCrossBlood.org, the Blood Donor App, or 1-800-RED CROSS. Those who donate by July 14 will receive Red Cross x goodr sunglasses, while donors from July 15-31 will get a Fandango Movie Reward. Upcoming Cobb County blood drives run through August, with locations including Marietta, Austell, Kennesaw, and Acworth. All blood types are needed, and donors must bring valid ID. Use RapidPass to save time by completing pre-donation steps online. STORY 7: Cobb EMC considering term limit extension Cobb EMC members will vote this summer on a proposed bylaw amendment to extend board term limits from four to five terms. The amendment, aimed at preventing a complete board turnover within 24 months, was approved 5-3 by the board to appear on the ballot. While some directors support the change to retain institutional knowledge, others, like Rudy Underwood, oppose it, citing prior commitments to term limits. A recent survey showed members are divided, with 49.2% favoring current limits and 43.3% supporting the extension. Voting begins in August, with the final decision at the annual meeting on Sept. 13. “More competitions are being organized, and it has become a way for these conductors and choirs to work on their skills. By joining these competitions, the rate of their progress accelerated. People join choirs for different reasons. For most of us, we started only because we loved singing, because we found a place where we can share our voice with friends with the same interest. This desire to join competitions would just be a product of years of singing with a choir.”Mark Anthony Carpio is recognized as one of the most respected figures in choral music today. He is a faculty member of the Conducting and Choral Ensemble Department of the University of the Philippines College of Music, where he earned his Master's degree in Choral Conducting and his Bachelor's degree in Piano. In 2001, Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion, National Artist for Music, chose Mark to succeed her as choirmaster of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, also known as the “Madz.” Since then, he has continuously led the already much-awarded choir to even greater heights, including placing first in several prestigious choral competitions in Europe. Under his leadership, the group has been invited as guest choir in several international choral conferences in the USA and South America, among others. In 2007, under the baton of Mark, the Philippine Madrigal Singers won, for the second time, the grand prize in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Arezzo, Italy. This victory makes them the first of the only four choirs in the world to win the grand prize twice. In 2009, UNESCO designated the group as a UNESCO Artist for Peace. This title is given to celebrity advocates charged with the mission of embodying and raising awareness of the UNESCO ideals, which include peace, security, fundamental human rights, and freedom. In the Philippines, he regularly collaborates with the Philippine Choral Directors Association, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, for music and choral education programs. He heads the Andrea O. Veneracion Sing Philippines Foundation, which spearheads choral music development initiatives including the Sing Philippines Youth Choir, whose singers come from all over the country.Mark has adjudicated in different choral festivals and competitions and presented around the world, including Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, Latvia and the US. Locally, he has been the chairman of the board of jurors of the biennial Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival and the 1st Asia Choral Grand Prix (2019).He also directs the Consortium of Voices, a choral society of young choristers, consisting of the Kilyawan Boys Choir, Kilyawan Male Choir and the Voces Auroræ Girls Choir. To get in touch with Mark, you can find him on Facebook (@markanthonycarpio) or visit the Philippine Madrigal Singers website.Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

With the latest attempt to make 21st Century audiences care about the most iconic superhero in comic book history barrelling down upon us in the form of James Gunn's Superman, we're taking a look at the character's long cinematic history, from '40s cartoons and serials up to the last notoriously botched attempt to make him the centerpiece of a shared cinematic universe. Superman expert Brian Fowler takes relative newbies Brennan Klein and Andrew Milne on a journey that asks such questions as What is the core essence of Superman? and Is there any reason to keep casting new Superman since Christopher Reeve died? and Is Superman more like Jesus, Moses, or a different figure altogether? Before getting to the main event, Andrew shares his thoughts on a 1989 Hong Kong picture with a world-class title, My Heart Is That Eternal Rose, while Brian and Brennan take a gander at some brand-new releases, Materialists and 28 Years Later.

On February 21st, President Trump issued a National Security Presidential Memorandum making it the policy of the U.S. government to stop underwriting the Chinese Communist Party. Three months later, Jamie Dimon's JP Morgan and Brian Moynihan's Bank of America flouted that “America First Investment Policy.” They helped arrange for Americans and others to invest over $4.6 billion in a Hong Kong initial public offering of a Pentagon-designated “Chinese military company.” The Financial Times reported yesterday that 47 other Chinese corporations are now in the process of following the lead of that company known as CATL – one involved in providing advanced electric batteries to make Chinese submarines more lethal threats to our Navy and sailors. We must stop financing our mortal enemy and hold accountable those like Messrs. Dimon and Moynihan who profit from selling out America. This is Frank Gaffney.

Are You Trading Your Health for Your Hustle? I thought I had to grind nonstop to win, but what if taking care of yourself is actually the key to achieving more? In this conversation with Michelle Bang, we unpack why “self-care” isn't just a buzzword—it's a non-negotiable if you want to live well while you climb. Michelle's journey from landing in the emergency room at the height of her success to rediscovering ancient Korean wellness practices is a wake-up call for anyone who thinks they'll get around to health “later.” Michelle breaks down why something as simple as walking after dinner can transform your energy, why fermented foods like kimchi are more than trendy side dishes, and why traditional Korean bathhouses have been quietly reducing heart attacks for generations. We talk about healthspan—not just how long you live, but how well you live—and how embracing practices like daily movement, mindful nourishment, and building community can give you back the edge you need without burning out your body. She shares how she went from ignoring her gut health and running on fumes to reclaiming her vitality by reconnecting with the wisdom she grew up with in Korea and Hong Kong. It's a reminder that no level of achievement is worth trading your health for, and taking small, consistent steps now will let you actually enjoy the life you're building. I challenge you today: Audit your well-being while you're chasing your dreams. Could taking better care of yourself actually help you climb higher? You are the one person you're going to spend your entire life with—take care of you. Key Takeaways: Why self-care is essential, not optional, for high achievers. How daily walks can improve digestion, reduce glucose spikes, and enhance creativity. The gut-brain connection and why fermented foods matter. The impact of “healthspan” versus just living longer. How traditional Korean practices like “jjimjilbang” and the cultural value of “Jeong” can be applied to your life now. If this hits you where you're at right now, share this episode with someone who needs the reminder, and let's start taking care of the one person who's with us for life: ourselves.
