Today, I am talking with the CEO of Thomas and Darden, Nathan George, the creator of Kube4, a premium portable entertainment system. Nathan, thank you so much for joining us today on Art of the Kickstart. Nathan George: Sure, thanks for having me, Roy. Roy Morejon: Really excited about today’s conversation. I think it would be prudent for me to jump in and say let’s talk a little bit first about your background because you’ve seen and done a lot of things, and been very successful with many things. What’s led you to this point and what led you to start as an entrepreneur? Nathan George: I don’t know. I think it goes back to even early days where I was always trying to figure how to make money. I didn’t have a lot growing up, whether it was trying to sell Airheads and Blow Pops at the bus stop, to making a self-sustaining hamster and durable business. I was running ad pack routes at 10 years old to get my first job as soon as I created 14 or 15 running inventory and stock boy for Finish Line. I started early just looking for ways to make money so I can buy a bicycle or anything else like that to get around. Roy Morejon: Talk a little bit about your current businesses or adventures in the entrepreneurial world. Nathan George: I think that that mindset is kind of always been around for me. I thought I was always destined to be an academic and be a professor, so my background’s in math and physics. I worked at Los Alamos National Labs and NSA. When I was at Berkeley after my first year, I got an email for a summer job to work with a startup hedge fund. I came in and ended up being brought on to build out the whole research team. I was hiring graduated PhDs from I’ve League to come work for me and I was a first-year student.

Known by the world as “The Greatest Adventure Racer”, Nathan showed the world his prodigious leadership skills—by winning six world championship out of fifteen world championship events across the globe. Adventure racing enraptured his youthful heart after attending the Outdoor Adventure Program. Nathan’s favorite part of racing is to refine every mistake his team encountered; transforming them into better decision-making outputs that would aid his team into winning the entire race. Currently, Nathan dedicates his time building a harmonious and willful family—the thing he inherited from his mother. In this episode, you will hear about: Nathan’s mischievous history How Nathan found his calling Why being a parent is not the “end” of your adventure Learning from mistakes in racing Dealing with pressure and uncertainties Nathan’s “Winner’s Philosophy” [03:01] Nathan originated from a family who were adventurer at heart in terms of camping, fishing and diving but not in extreme sports like mountain climbing and hiking. He enjoyed being one with the environment and its exploratory nature. [05:01] Growing up free-willed and mischievous, Nathan felt the unhealthy directions he was heading into. Even though he felt the excitement, he knew there was no future waiting for him by going to that path. [06:28] How Nathan found his calling: He got the opportunity by attending the Outdoor Adventure Program. It was a pilot program for twelve boys where it involves challenges that frightened the participants but Nathan found interest from it. He fell in-love with the outdoor sports and the adventure of being in the wilderness. [08:46] Nathan’s brother is exceptional at multiple sports like soccer, rugby, cricket but he discovered outdoor sports and the might of his endurance. He found the thing that was for him and he went off. [11:01] Nathan and Jodie, who is an outdoor educator, decided to have a family. They wanted to build their family through their strengths as a couple and outdoor athletes, offer their children with meaningful experiences and teaching them with lessons they have learned in life. [12:46] Many people predicted that by being a young parent, it is the end of your sporting career. But Nathan and Jodie defied expectations and prove the people who doubted them wrong. [16:30] Nathan’s children are all involved in high school adventure racing where his eldest daughter and son belong to the senior team while his younger daughter is in the junior team. [18:52] Adventure racing was not a thing until Jodie started an adventure club with the goal to compete in the nationals. In just five years, the school won championships from nothing. [20:30] Nathan deliberately took a step back because he did not want to put pressure to his children by being too involved in the school’s activities. However, he coaches the teams by making a training program for them or if they wish to seek advice from him. [22:43] In 1999, the Southern Traverse in New Zealand was Nathan’s first adventure. [26:00] Learn small things from the race in terms of the checkpoints, route choices, trails and being critical with the chosen equipment. Through this, you can make better decisions on your next race. [32:37] Even when Nathan’s had kids, he still attended adventure racing since he was essentially employed by Seagate as an adventure racer. However, he felt the need to take a break due to the difficulty of balancing family matters and his pressing heart condition. [38:23] The pressure comes from the team’s standard. If you know what it feels like to underperform as a team and get beaten up by better teams, then you are good to go. [44:04] To navigate the uncertainties during an adventure race, you need to accept what happened as soon as possible. Have the solution-based thinking and focus on what things will be helpful to navigate that moment. Stay calm, be rational and identify the mistakes committed and the solutions you formulated to fix it. [51:04] If you are in a challenging spot, Nathan encourages people to think what you will say first and if that will help your team. [55:58] To become a winner, you need to be prepared to lose it—have the confidence to do the best for your team even if you put yourselves out of the race. [01:00:57] You always do more when you’ve got to race. CONNECT WITH NATHAN! Website: https://nathanfaavae.nz/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nathan.faavae JOIN MY ADVENTURES! After 6 seasons in the minors with only 20 NHL games, one wouldn't generally expect for a 28 year old player to make a full time jump to the NHL, but that's what Nathan did. An 11th Round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1992, Dempsey was never a high-profile prospect, and was just hoping to crack the AHL coming out of junior. In his rookie pro season, Nathan took advantage of injuries to some veteran players and solidified his spot with the St. John’s Leafs. Where 3 seasons later he would be the team captain. At that time Nathan had his sights set on bigger things, he was ready to become an NHL’er but… Solid season after solid season was not enough to get Nathan the opportunity, he felt he deserved. Nathan continued to grow his game, and his leadership skills and made one huge decision that allowed him to become an NHL regular with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2002. After finally making his NHL dreams come true and enjoying his third season in the Show, Nathan experienced symptoms of early onset Parkinson's while playing with the LA Kings and Nathan had new challenges to face. Although he wasn’t officially diagnosed until year later, Nathan felt it affecting his game and was forced to retire from the sport in 2008 Leaving the game behind was not an option for Nathan and he now serves as the Campus Director at Vimy Ridge Hockey in Edmonton, Alberta where he is supporting young athletes develop their love and skills for the sport. This is a very raw and real conversation and we cover so many great things like: Why finding your identity and not caring about the judgement of others is so important How Nathan defines resilience and why he believes you can practice it The key decision that Nathan “called” selfish that got him his NHL job Why working on your strengths might be more important than working on your weaknesses How the proper mindset made a difference for Nathan as a player and how it continues to make a difference for him as person. Many thanks to my old teammate Nathan Dempsey for spending time with me and being so open and vulnerable about so many things. I believe this is a very inspiring episode and one that you will enjoy.

Everybody talks about outsourcing, but most of them don't have a clue about how to do it. They say just go hire somebody and he'll take care of everything, and when you do everything gets done wrong and you end up doing it on your own... That's how a typical remote entrepreneur hires and fails. I wanted to avoid that and that's why I interviewed one of the best outsourcing experts in the world - Nathan Hirsch. Nathan Hirsch is a serial entrepreneur and expert in remote hiring and e-commerce. He is the co-founder of FreeeUp.com, a renowned marketplace for hiring VAs. Most recently, he's building an educational platform designed to help remote entrepreneurs with all aspects of running a remote business called Outsourcing School! Remotrepreneur’s Insights The importance of hiring – Nathan explains why you must hire if you want to grow and scale your business How to hire and manage VAs – Nathan explains the entire process of hiring and managing VAs effectively and efficiently How to create an effective SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) – What most people miss when creating an SOP Outsource School - What’s included in the Cracking The VA Code Course Key Podcast Milestones: 02:47 - Nathan's Entrepreneurial Start 05:14 - Selling on Amazon 06:15 - How Nathan was forced to start hiring 08:13 - How Nathan pivoted to remote hiring 10:00 - Why FreeUp was started 13:52 - When should you hire VA 17:51 - Interviewing VAs Process 22:00 - SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) 25:08 - Managing VAs Process 31:12 - Selling FreeUp 34:44 - Story behind OutsourcingSchool.com Top Key Quotes: "Before hiring a VA, make sure you can afford them and have enough work they can work on" "I'd rather spend 30min interviewing VA and see they're not a good fit upfront, than wasting 3 months trying to make it work!" Alternate history and time travel author Nathan Van Coops was a trooper and joined Jami Albight and Sara Rosett despite having a cold. They delve into the joys of being a part-time writer and creating the lifestyle you want as well as tips on mistakes involving doing a royalty share for a Book One and trying to juggle too many things. And, last, they laugh about Jami's lunch choices and geek out about plotting books. Nathan, Jami, and Sara discuss: -Tackling the thorny details of time travel and how dealing with the specifics appealed to fans of the genre -How Nathan carved a new entrepreneurial path and created a lifestyle that blends art and aviation -Living the life you want, which for Nathan means being able to wear flip flops to work -Influence of children’s adventure book, The Neverending Story -Advantages of being a part-time author: a financial safety net, reduced mental strain, and creative freedom -Risk evaluation for indie authors -How not all jobs are “soul-sucking” and you can love traditional employment and be a writer at the same time -Writing a book in snatches of 15 to 20 minutes -Why doing a royalty share on a Book One was a mistake -Why trying to juggle too many things is a mistake -Mindset and how to keep a healthy attitude -The benefits of preorders -Changes in the publishing industry, including pricing higher and how that can help you find new readers -How understanding his love of adventures stories helps Nathan write satisfying books for his readers -How finding your overarching brand draws readers to you as an author -Sara and Nathan geek out about plotting and plotting resources Genres discussed include time travel, alternate history, romance and mystery. Before I introduce you to today’s guest and why what he does is something you’ll want to pay attention to if you want to replace your day job income before you quit, I want to share why I think what he does is so important. So if you’ve listened to this podcast for any amount of time, you know that my story in a nutshell is that at 35 years old, I found myself sitting in my beige, windowless office at my day job basically having a panic attack about having to do that same day over and over and over again for the rest of my life, feeling super guilty for not being appreciative of living out the American dream of good grades in high school, graduating from college and working my way up the corporate ladder to a job with great salary and benefits. So I decided to start my own freelance web design business as a side hustle, quickly burnt myself out because I wasn’t charging enough and there was no way I’d have enough free time outside my day job to replace my income (and there way no way I was gonna leave my salary behind). So I pivoted to teaching entrepreneurs how to DIY and earning revenue from affiliate marketing, and then people starting asked me to build their websites for them… And with some help from my business coach I decided to say yes, and then over the next three of years I side hustled, earning my money from a mix of affiliates, courses and 1:1 web design services, started making enough money every month to replace my salary and cover business expenses and taxes, and I was able to quit my day job without taking a pay cut. What I don’t talk about too often is that I didn’t do it all on my own. About one year in, I finally hired a virtual assistant. About 6 months in, I’d tried to hire one… I’d been listening to all these online business podcasts that talked about outsourcing, and how fantastic and amazing it is to hire VA’s from the Phillipines because the cost of living is so low there compared to the US that at the time you could pay $250 a week for a 40/hour a week virtual assistant. So I tried that, and it just wasn’t a good fit for me - for several reasons, all of which are my fault, by the way. One, I had to be way more organized than I was to be able to outsource to people and at the time, I was totally winging it and putting out fires every single day. Two, there’s a significant time difference between the Phillipines + where I live and so it took longer to get things turned around once I delegated it when I was worked to when they saw it when they were working, asked me questions that I’d answer when I was working and they’d see the answer when they were working and now two days have gone by and they haven’t even started… so I’d end up just doing it myself. And there were a few communication issues, again, on my end because I’m super wordy talk too fast. And I didn’t have 40 hours of work to give them, but they were looking for something full time for one person. So that whole thing did not work out for me… And then I was introduced to a company that unfortunately is now closed, but it was basically a boutique VA agency for female entrepreneurs, based in the US. I was assigned an account manager, I would give her the tasks + instructions and she made sure the person on their team with that expertise knew what to do and got the work done. I paid $600 for 15 hours a MONTH (as compared to $600 for 40 hours a week) but it was well worth it to me. My business could afford the expense because I wasn’t even paying myself a paycheck at all - at the time I was investing everything I made back into the business. They were able to manage my inbox and my facebook groups while I was at work, post and format my blog posts, set my weekly newsletter and they even were around at the beginning of Pep Talks for Side Hustlers and published the podcast for me. So when I quit my day job and I actually started paying myself a paycheck, I went looking for ways to reduce my expenses, and they raised their prices, and I could no longer justify to pay that much for 15 hours a month and I took back all the work into my business myself, and then the person who I was contracting with as a project manager on my web design projects wanted more hours so I gave the work to her, and that’s what we still do today and all is right with the world. What I want you to know is that I didn’t do it alone then, and I’m not doing it alone now. So if you’re listening to this and you’re thinking, yeah, the whole outsourcing to another country thing doesn’t sound right for me, and the whole paying $600 for 15 hours a month thing also doesn’t sound right to me, and I’m not sure I need a dedicated team member right now - but I know that if I’m really gonna grow I need to get these things off my plate, but how do I find the right person - then I’m super excited to introduce you to today’s guest, Nathan Hirsch of Freeeup.com* - where you can hire affordable, pre-vetted freelancers with no signup fees, no minimums so that you can get more done faster. Nathan is a 30-year-old serial entrepreneur who built his first company to over twenty million in sales using virtual assistants and freelancers. He created FreeeUp.com* to address the frustrations he had with finding the right freelancers to help him grow his business. Today we’re talking about: How Nathan competed with the college bookstore as a side hustle. How he used virtual assistants and freelancers to grow his Amazon store to over 20 million in sales. What his hiring experience was like when he was first hiring employees as a new entrepreneur. Nathan’s “Top 1%” philosophy The number one thing you must commit to for a great hiring experience. How to get ready for your first hire. The three types of hires and how to choose the right one for you. Why Nathan chooses to grow his business organically, without relying on paid ads, and how he does it. Nathan’s advice for someone who is struggling to grow their business The one belief Nathan had to change about himself to get where he is today. My favorite quotes from Nathan: “Instead of trying to turn every weakness into a strength, I hire an expert who already has success with it, already has systems for it, to come in and execute it. ” “Figure out what type of people you are working with and work with them the right way.” “Focus on low risk, high reward situations.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Freeeup.com* Bio: Nathan Hirsch is a 30-year-old serial entrepreneur and expert in remote hiring and eCommerce. He regularly appears on leading podcasts, such as Entrepreneur on Fire, and speaks at live events about online hiring tactics. Nathan built his first company (Amazon business) to over twenty million in sales using virtual assistants and freelancers. “I always wanted a faster way to find talent, I hated browsing through 50 applicants every-time I posted a job on the other marketplaces. Nathan Leary is an IT & Cybersecurity Sales Pro based in Austin, Texas. He is the host of Security + Brews Chat, which is a video series about actual IT problems. He has conversations with IT professionals over coffee, which positions him as an industry expert and a content creator. We discuss his early sales career, how he accidentally fell into IT (and loved it), and how he thinks about video, personal branding, and sales teaming with marketing to really add value to his buyers in the sales cycle. Show highlights: 05:00 - Nathan selling Cutco knives as first sales job to haphazardly applying for SDR jobs after college, looking for a start up. Accidentally ended up in IT sales. 08:00 - How Nathan came to know and love cybersecurity without a background in it. He learned from talking to customers about their problems and listening. 13:00 - Starting the "Security and Brews Chat". Content in the sales process and include the personal branding piece. Nathan's goal is entertaining and valuable. 20:00 - Resources to get started with trending sales, marketing, and prospecting tactics like video. Find frameworks to make your content, then sales reps can plug and chug versus reinventing the wheel. 22:00 - How sales can approach marketing and brand managers to do bottoms-up messaging, versus waiting for it to trickle down. Nathan recommends Jake Dunlap for enabling sales to be digital brand ambassadors. 25:00 - find a company that lets you take an idea and run with it, especially as a sales rep if you're already taking content that marketing made and make it digestible. 28:00 - Frequency of posting content in 2019, don't dilute your message. How do you balance it with your job? It's okay not to scale your brand at a fast rate.
About Nathan Success was sweet to me. At the relatively young age of 40, I had worked long and hard and I was enjoying the fruits of my honest labors. As a hard-driving Christian entrepreneur, I had managed to parlay my God-given business acumen, natural tenacity, and technological savvy into a bevy of business interests that generated hefty profits and a positive cash flow. I owned 7 apartment complexes (399 units), a car lot and a consulting company. All of them had been profitable business enterprises over the years. On the home front, my gorgeous wife Jordan was smart and sophisticated (I truly married way above my means!), and my young daughter Abigail was loving, caring and talented. I wanted to give them both the best of everything. We lived in a good upscale neighborhood outside of Winston-Salem, NC, and we had purchased a vacation home in the mountains. I drove a new Porsche and Jordan always had the latest and nicest SUV. We owned show horses and Abigail was considered a child prodigy in equestrian circles. So, to all outward appearances, I was living the American Dream, and I relished that superficial image of glamorous prosperity. On Today's show Nathan talks about. The importance of the sellers Bank statements.Don't rely on Pro forma from the seller/agentThe Importance of a checklistChecking every outlet in every roomChecking the sewer line of the property. How Nathan found balance, His 7 StepsHis favorite reading materials.Proverbs- The BibleAsk- By Ryan LevesqueTapestry, Promises & Prophecy By Dr. Adrain Rogers. You can find Nathan atwww.nathantabor.com - Go to his site to download a free copy of "The Guide To Finding Balance"Joe Fairless - Best real estate investing advise ever- search under podcast.Michael Blank- The apartment building investing podcast -search under podcast"Keep the Momentum Going, Good Things will Happen"You can find me atwww.peer2peerrealestate.com Go there to download Nathan's Checklists on the resources pagewww.facebook.com/peer2peerrealestatehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/williemorales/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome back to another episode of RNT Fitness Radio. On today’s episode I’m joined by fellow RNT coach Nathan, and we start by discussing his initial experiences of becoming a full time NOMAD, and his recent exploration into journaling. I also picked up journaling recently when in Thailand, and after seeing the benefits of this style of writing, I encouraged Nathan to do the same when he started travelling. His insights into journaling, and the methods he’s been using to improve his writing will be interesting for many of you. We then dive into discussing our triphasic approach to body transformations, why you might need to clean the pallet, the art of buffering around social occasions, and why you need to have precursors in place to make habit building and stacking as simple and automatic as possible. On today’s episode of Just the Tips, I welcome a new and improved Dean Holland. He hasn’t actually changed a thing, but I’m trying to spice things up a bit. And Dean and I together welcome Nathan Hirsch. Nathan started his first eCommerce business out of his college dorm room and has sold over $30 million online, and is now the co-founder and CEO of FreeeUp.com, a marketplace that connects businesses with pre-vetted freelancers in eCommerce, digital marketing, and much more. We talk with Nathan about how he started FreeeUp, the pitfalls of hiring freelancers, and how his first business nearly put his college bookstore out of business. From cease and desist to rise and persist Nathan told us a great story on this week’s Just the Tips of how, when he was in college, he began selling books out of his dorm room and the trunk of his car, until the school sent him a cease and desist letter. But by then he had set his eyes on bigger pies, and he began selling products on Amazon. He tried to move beyond books, but no matter what he tried to sell, he kept failing, until at the age of 20, he sold the one thing that all 20-year-old, male college students think about: baby products. But it all took off for him, and taught him hard lessons about selling online. The number-one problem for entrepreneurs: That first hire When Nathan was in college as a business major, he remembers one talk by the woman who led his school’s entrepreneurship program. While all of the business professors were telling him to take economics or finance, she just got onstage and said, “If you want true financial freedom, be an entrepreneur.” And from there he was hooked. But I had to ask him, what was the one lesson he’s really learned out in the field that they never taught him in college. And sure enough: It was hiring. Luckily, there’s no one better to talk to about hiring than Nathan, and that’s why we got him on this week’s Just the Tips. How Nathan made his best and worst hire Nathan told us about how when he first started his business, the only people he knew he could hire were college students; not exactly the most reliable pool of workers. His first hire was a buddy in his business law class, and that ended up being his best hire ever. But it also gave him the false impression that hiring was easy. So he then made bad hire after bad hire, not really understanding what was going wrong. It took him years to figure it out, and that process is what led to FreeeUp.com. FreeeUp and solving the problem of freelancers FreeeUp receives hundreds of freelancer applicants each week to join its marketplace. Nathan’s team interviews and vets them, and takes the top 1% (based on skill, attitude and communication), and makes them available to their clients quickly whenever they need them. It’s a little different than, say, Fiverr, which is an open market. FreeeUp, because it was built by entrepreneurs, is build to solve entrepreneurs’ problems. They have 24/7 support and have a no-turnover guarantee covering replacement costs if the freelancer ever quits. Nathan really has hiring down to a science, and he gives us a ton of great advice on how entrepreneurs can improve their own hiring. Podcastification - podcasting tips, podcast tricks, how to podcast better
For as long as I’ve been playing around and working on the internet, I’ve heard people touting the benefits of paying for virtual services - you know, VAs and that kind of stuff. From the first time I heard it said, I got the logic of it. Sure, it makes sense to hire someone to do the things I either don’t want to do, am not good at doing, or shouldn’t be doing from a time VS value perspective. But until this conversation, I’ve never been able to bring myself to take the leap and actually hire out some of the stuff that makes my podcast and business run. I’ve invited Nathan Hirsch, co-founder of FreeeUp.com to be my guest on this episode of Podcastification to help convince me - and convince me he did. BTW: The audio quality on MY SIDE of this recording is terrible. Awful. And in all other ways stinky. It’s because I got lazy and didn’t use my podcast production checklist to ensure that everything was set correctly. As a result, my voice was recorded through the built-in mic on my laptop. BAD form. BAD form. My apologies. I guess it goes to show that even those of us who do something on a professional basis make mistakes from time to time. I’m just sorry you have to listen to it. Nathan Resnick went from selling Livestrong bracelets in middle school to founding Sourcify —the fastest growing B2B sourcing platform backed by Y Combinator. He started Sourcify a year ago and has since helped thousands of different companies bring their products to life. In this episode, Nathan reveals how to spot opportunity in creating and sourcing products as well as what it takes to make it as a product-based business. Episode Topics E-commerce, e-commerce, e-commerce How Nathan got the idea for Sourcify Uncovering opportunities in creating and sourcing products Nathan’s business model and marketing strategy Knowing when to pivot in business What it’s like applying to and getting backed by Y Combinator Financing as an opportunity in the supply chain The single most impactful experience that lead to Sourcify’s success Purchasing and profiting from manufacture runoff The one quality every entrepreneur must have to be successful according to Nathan [4:41] Starting line: In middle school, Nathan noticed the Livestrong bracelet trend and realized he could buy them in bulk online. He resold them to his friends for a "pretty good margin." [9:05] Evolving Entrepreneur: Early in high school, he made money sneaker hunting for his friends. [10:53] During his junior year, he spent a year in China as a foreign exchange student. He’d go to local markets and purchase runoff units at a steep discount then resell them online for a "very hefty" margin. [13:14] Bitten by the bug: Nathan saw how products were produced on the ground floor. "As that dynamic grew, I always wanted to create my own product and felt the urge to. I didn't wanna sell someone else's product." [13:30] First invention: In college, he invented the 1st leather watch strap without holes and grew it to a 6-figure store on Shopify the 1st year. As the company grew, he attracted media outlets like Huffington Post and Entrepreneur. [14:56] Seeing and solving a problem: After people started asking how he produced products overseas faster and more effectively, "We realized there was a huge opportunity to create a platform that would streamline that manufacturing process." Sourcify was born. [18:40] There has to have been a problem on the manufacturing side...? [19:45] Seeing opportunity: How Nathan discovered that low-quality leads were a problem for manufacturers. [22:15] First-hand experience: What it's like applying to Y Combinator...and getting accepted! [27:26] Winning business model: "There's obviously a lot of ways to manufacture products...but our approach is different and our mindset behind what we do is a lot different — and that's what sets us apart." [30:54] "It took Dropbox 11 years to go public. A lot of these billion-dollar companies that people think happened overnight happen actually over 10+ years." [31:13] Growth strategy: Sourcify's growth is fueled by providing value through content marketing (webinars, blogs) and SEO. [33:05] Single out the most impactful experience you had that lead to your Sourcify success: “People talk about passion, determination, and motivation but if you don't have the ability to get back up when someone says no to you, then you're not gonna be successful." [34:50] Points of conflict: “You have to be excited about what you're doing or you won't be as determined to work as hard.” [35:40] Show recap. Connect with Nathan: TrySourcify.com

One of the most common challenges agencies of all sizes are facing right now is the finding the right people to add to the team. Client budgets and programs are growing, new business is getting a little easier and so everything should be rosey. But when you don’t have the right team to get the work done – it’s frustrating and frightening. 10-15 years ago the prevailing attitude was that agencies needed everyone under one roof. After all the work is so collaborative. But when the recession hit and people had to reduce fixed expenses to survive, many agencies who swore they would never use freelancers or hire someone virtual crossed over and did just that. That’s why I was so interested in talking to Nathan Hirsch, the co-founder and CEO of FreeeUp.com, the hands-on hiring marketplace connecting hundreds of online business owners with reliable, pre-vetted remote workers. Nathan can also be found on leading podcasts, such as Entrepreneur on Fire and Eventual Millionaire, speaking about online hiring tactics. If you listen with an open mind and a willingness to consider something different – I think you might get some interesting ideas about your own talent pool. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Remote workers give business owners an opportunity to level up their talent at a cheaper cost than traditional employees The advantages freelancers bring to agencies The idea of creating your own marketplace with your freelance pool so they compete with each other and always deliver their best work How the freelance business is changing and freelancers have their own team working for them Why Nathan believes you should pay freelancers on an hourly model How Nathan’s company Freeeup helps its freelancers work with agencies so everyone wins Minimizing risk when working with freelancers and what Freeeup does to make its freelancers less risky than other freelancers Structuring interviews to weed out the wrong freelancers before you start working together Tools to work more effectively with freelancers and virtual employees The pros and cons of having your employees work remotely Creating a feeling of collaboration and teamwork when your team doesn’t see each other regularly Why allowing an in-office employee to go virtual rarely ever works The importance of diversifying when you’re hiring Ways to contact Nathan Hirsch: Website: freeeup.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/freeeupcom Twitter: @freeeup Instagram: @freeeup_ Email: nathan@freeeup.com We’re proud to announce that Hubspot is now the presenting sponsor of the Build A Better Agency podcast! If you want to create a different outcome in your life and something is uncomfortable, how can you stay the course? It can be hard to persevere when you don’t know what will happen; it’s a disconcerting feeling and it can make you feel insecure. You can get past all of that and get past your uncertainty and discomfort! Today’s guest is Nathan Seaward, aka Nathan the Pilot. He used to fly commercial aircraft, his boyhood dream. At some point, he decided it wasn’t for him anymore. While leaving behind the career, paycheck and identity of being a pilot is what he wants to do, it has thrown him into a state of flux and uncertainty. We’re going to explore Nathan’s feelings and how you can apply the truths he’s learned to your own life. Some of the highlights of the show include: How Nathan achieved his boyhood dream of becoming a pilot and why he realized that commercial flying wasn’t, in fact, his dream. Also, Nathan talks about what he decided to do instead. How Nathan knew it was time to leave his job as a commercial pilot and what he did immediately after leaving when he went into panic mode. How it feels to be firmly in the grasp of uncertainty and how Nathan handles being uncomfortable. How Nathan opens himself to feeling negative feelings by using breathing exercises. Nathan’s advice for someone wanting to make the leap but unsure of what to do. What comes to mind when you think of narrative painting? Do you think of a particular painting or a series of paintings? What is it about painting with a narrative that captures an audience? My guest, Nathan Lewis is an accomplished narrative painter. In our conversation, Nathan and I spoke about the language of painting, multi figure paintings, painting through frustration and doubt, and so much more! I know artists like you will enjoy hearing from his unique perspective. I am really excited for you to get a glimpse into the world of narrative painting by hearing Nathan’s fascinating story and insights. The Draw to Narrative Painting Do you remember what drew you to your style or type of painting? Was it an artist that captured your imagination, a teacher that opened it up to you, or was it more of a gradual revelation? For artist Nathan Lewis, he was drawn to narrative painting through his personal pursuit of finding meaning in life. Nathan describes his attraction to art as an attraction to live a life of meaning and to find some way to interact with the world. He goes on to explain how once he got a handle on his understanding of art forms, the narrative connection just started to fall into place. Make sure you take a minute to look over Nathan’s artwork at the end of this post. Pushing Past Fear and Failure What do you do with fear of failure as an artists? Does it over take you sometimes? Do you use it for fuel? What is a helpful perspective we can have on this subject? Nathan Lewis has struggled with fear, doubt, and failure as an artist. To get through those difficult and potentially self defeating emotions, Nathan commits himself to his artwork at hand. He has found pushing through (not ignoring) those emotions and engaging in his art to be a helpful solution. What has worked for you in the past? What is your plan for when those feelings creep back in? I hope that hearing from Nathan can help you start to wrestle with these emotions in a way that’s helpful for you. The Role of Memory in Art As an artist who also works from photography I was curious to get Nathan Lewis’ perspective on what role memory has in his artwork. The fact of the matter is, there are aspects that get lost, and some aspects that get captured when we utilize photography to assist us in our paintings. Nathan explains how he enjoys using photography to take his time with a subject. This allows him to avoid the need rush to capture something that he won’t be able to remember from the subject or scene later on if he were forced to rely on his memory. I really resonated with a lot of what Nathan had to share on this subject and I hope artists like you can connect with his unique perspective. The Artist’s Social Life As an artist it can be a struggle to engage with others on a social level. There are a few factors involved in this difficulty. One is that non-artists don’t really understand the demands that our craft has on our time and availability. Another struggle arises when we only socialize with fellow artists and lose that connection with other sectors of society and culture. Which one do you find yourself more drawn to? Have you taken the time to consider why that is? In my conversation with artist Nathan Lewis, we discuss our own experiences with each side of this coin. I hope you find our conversation encouraging and helpful as you navigate how this plays out in your life too. Outline of This Episode [1:35] I introduce my guest, Nathan Lewis. Real Estate Investing Profits Master Series with Cory Boatright
Today’s episode is huge. Nathan Brooks is like a celebrity for me. He’s the CEO of his own company Bridge Turnkey Investments, and he’s basically automated his excellent leadership into a successful investment strategy. He started out as a musician and wanted to be a rock star, but how he got into real estate investing is really inspiring. You’re going to hear how he transformed his company by focusing on the excellence of his team. Nathan calls it a “renaissance”, and in reality that’s exactly what it is. He overhauled his entire business model, all the way down to the specific tasks of his each of his employees. He learned what it truly means to manage and lead a team. Nathan breaks down all of the individual processes he put in place in order for his turnkey investment strategy to be as successful as it is. Nathan has a trick for focusing on just one thing. I know that seems impossible when you have 45 to 50 things to do every day, but this meditative technique for being present in the moment is truly valuable. If you’re able to check in with yourself every day and be present in the specific moments that means the most, then you are truly a success story. Focus on just one thing and you can really develop the real estate investment strategy you envision for yourself. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is an only twenty seven years old, but he seems to have packed in several decades of work and hustle in such a short period of time. He has been an entrepreneur in the eCommerce industry since 2009 and has grown into a leading expert in the field with experience managing multi-million dollar businesses. But of course we are most interested in what he is doing today. What is getting him excited everyday when he jumps out of bed? Well he is the Founder and CEO of FreeeUp a company that he started 2015 after spending 7+ years interviewing, hiring, and training remote workers. He decided that there must be a better way for eCommerce companies to hire remote workers without having to spend hours interviewing and finding the most reliable people. A year later and FreeeUp is a rapidly growing company interviewing hundreds of worker applicants each week and providing remote workers for hundreds of clients. He has found a gap in the market place and filled it with his experience and passion allowing it to flourish. And with his extensive knowledge in creating business systems and processes, personnel management, hiring remote workers, the Amazon Marketplace, and advanced sales tactics this is going to get bigger and bigger. But does he see this as his legacy work, or simply something that is moving him closer and closer towards his goals? And what does he enjoy the most in his work….the creation, or the customer satisfaction? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr. Nathan Hirsch Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Nathan Hirsch such as: How Nathan has developed the abilities to bounce back from every failure that has hit him, ensuring that he has learnt from those hard-times before moving forward. The story of the trip to Myrtle Beach, where he suffered a huge client loss and identity fraud all within a few hours…tipping his world on its axis. Why you should always look to start hiring as soon as you can in your business, to allow yourself free time to do the stuff that you are best at. and lastly…. Why he has set up his company to have three levels of staff, to boost the quality of the work, and to maintain greater control on standards and systems..very wise decision indeed.

Today’s guest, Nathan Chan, is wired to be an entrepreneur. He’s built a 6 figure digital publishing empire from scratch, and admits that in the beginning he knew exactly nothing about how to do it. Foundr magazine is a huge entrepreneurial success and there are tons of lessons to be learned from Nathan’s story and he shares them generously in this episode. If you’re an entrepreneur who’s just starting up your business endeavors, Nathan’s story should be very encouraging to you, so stick around! “I don’t work. I build businesses for fun.” That’s the first line you’ll see on Nathan Chan’s LinkedIn profile and it’s true. You can tell from the energy and enthusiasm that he exudes on this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut that it’s true. Nathan started building his online media empire before he really know what he was doing. Now his online magazine, Foundr, is one of the top 10 digital magazines on the iTunes store and he’s very pleased with how things have turned out (naturally). In this episode we find out how Nathan got started, the first steps he took, and how he landed some of his biggest interviews, including the cover story on Richard Branson that he used to put his magazine on the radar of many other high profile people who would one day be a part of his media publication. Smart Player (for that episode) Why the content of the episode is important Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur, but for those who have it in their blood to start and grow their own business Nathan Chan has two words of advice: Extreme focus. In his words, “You have to be hungry if you want to build a successful business.” There can’t be any part of the process that you allow to intimidate you or hold you back. You have to be constantly learning, constantly growing, and constantly pushing past the barriers to your next step so that you can eventually reach the pinnacle you’re shooting for. It takes that kind of relentless effort to make your business the success you want it to be. You can hear Nathan unpack those concepts as he discussed the issue of extreme focus, on this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut. More about the show As he began his digital magazine, Nathan wanted to get an interview with Richard Branson. He figured that Richard was the epitome of an entrepreneur and that he’d be a perfect fit for his niche audience. But it wasn’t easy to get the interview. He worked tirelessly to find just the right person, the “gatekeeper” he could speak to in order to make a good connection with Richard. When he finally did, he worked very carefully and consistently to make sure he was able to land the interview. Though he originally lobbied for a Skype interview, it wasn’t possible given Richard’s schedule so he opted for an email exchange. That interview and the cover article he published were the catalyst for the future success of Foundr magazine. In this conversation with Khierstyn Ross, Nathan shares how he went about getting that connection, step by step – and how the results were more than he hoped for. Quotes "I don’t feel like I’ve attained success" "If things don’t work, you just keep moving and keep building" "Being so extremely focused provides an extreme amount of hustle" "You have to be hungry if you want to build a successful business" Nathan Chan's Story Most online enterprises today are launched with a very carefully thought out strategy for getting the most eyes on it as possible, right away. But back when Nathan Chan began his online magazine (it wasn’t called Foundr then) he didn’t have any launch plan. He just build a website, began designing his magazine, and started contacting people he wanted to have featured in its pages. That was it. Through a lot of trial and error he was able to land some “big fish” who he then used as leverage to attract more big fish. Richard Branson was the first and many others followed. In this episode you can hear the details of what Nathan did to track down Richard Branson, get an interview with him, and use that connection to get more high profile interviews to move the Foundr brand forward.
