Im Schatten der Katastrophe von Mayerling bleibt von "jener Gräfin Larisch" nicht mehr als die Gewissheit ihrer Schuld, ihre unrühmliche Rolle und der tiefe Fall. Die   Lieblingsnichte Kaiserin Elisabeths wurde zur 'Persona non grata' degradiert, Kaiser Franz Joseph verbannte sie vom Wiener Hof. Doch das Leben Marie Larisch geht weiter. Als Schriftstellerin wird sie sich versuchen, als Schauspielerin und Drehbuchautorin. Kaum eine Person außerhalb der Wiener Hofburg jedoch ahnt, dass mit der verarmten Gräfin auch die größte Erpresserin des österreichischen Kaiserhauses heranwächst. Mehrere Millionen Kronen zahlt man widerwillig an die ungeliebte Verwandte, denn Marie ist im Besitz persönlicher Dokumente der Kaiserin von Österreich. Höre hier über das unkonventionelle Leben "jener Gräfin Larisch", ihre Machenschaften, ihre Erfolge. 

(TW: Suizid) Um die Mittagsstunde traf die Botschaft vom Tod des Kronprinzen in der Wiener Hofburg ein - noch sprach man dort von Gift. Bald schon aber bahnten sich Gerüchte und Spekulationen aller Art den Weg in die Öffentlichkeit, ein Kampf  gegen den ausufernden Skandal begann, der bis zum Tod Kaiser Franz Josephs nicht mehr beendet werden konnte. Eine Vielzahl an Schriften, Artikeln und Büchern wurde verfasst, Gewinnsucht und der Wunsch nach Rehabilitierung ließen viele zur Feder greifen. Das Schicksal der toten Mary Vetsera indes blieb ein unwürdiges, pietätlos war der Umgang mit ihren sterblichen Überresten, bis weit in das 20 Jh. hinein. Doch welche Auswirkungen hatte die Affäre Mayerling  auf das österreichische Kaiserhaus und wie ging es mit den involvierten Personen weiter? Höre hier den letzten Teil der Trilogie rund um das Ableben Kronprinz Rudolfs und Baronesse Mary Vetseras und erfahre mehr zu den Hintergründen und Konsequenzen.

(TW: Suizid) Gegen 11.30 Uhr befand sich Baronesse Mary Vetsera bereits auf dem Weg nach Mayerling. Um 12.00 Uhr machte Gräfin Marie Larisch im Verhör nachweislich falsche Angaben bezüglich Marys Verbleib. Baronin Helene Vetsera, Marys Mutter, wurde um 13.00 Uhr bereits von bösen Vorahnungen heimgesucht. Und Kronprinz Rudolf steuerte seine Kutsche auf Umwegen durch das winterliche Wien, Mayerling entgegen. Kurz vor 16.00 Uhr schließlich, als die Sonne bereits sank, trafen die ProtagonistInnen der berühmten Affäre um Mord und Selbstmord in dem abgelegenen Jagdschloss ein. Ein dunkles Geflecht aus Lügen und Halbwahrheiten, aus Schutzbehauptungen und Verleumdungen sollte an jenem 28. Am 28. Jänner 1889 beginnt die Reise in den Tod. Kronprinz Rudolf und Baronesse Mary Vetsera treten sie nicht gemeinsam an, erst vor den Toren Wiens trifft man sich, um über vereiste Strassen langsam gen Mayerling zu fahren. All das ist geplant, all das wurde vorbereitet. Noch während die beiden unterwegs sind steigt in Wien die Nervosität. Schon um die Mittagsstunde wird Gräfin Marie Larisch, deren Rolle in dieser Affäre  sie zu einer der meist verachteten Personen der Monarchie  werden lässt, durch eine Falschaussage versuchen, sich von den Vorgängen zu distanzieren. Baronin Helene Vetsera, Marys Mutter, lässt hektisch Erkundigungen über den Verbleib ihrer Tochter einziehen, und Alexander Baltazzi, Marys Onkel und Vormund, mutmaßt bereits an dieser Stelle über eine Beteiligung des Kronprinzen. Dieser genießt in diversen Biographien auch heute noch den Ruf eines vom Leben gezeichneten Playboys, eines verbrauchten, weit über die Jahre gealterten Mannes, krank und in vielerlei Hinsicht an seinen Aufgaben gescheitert. Aber lässt sich dieses Bild vorbehaltlos zeichnen? Und wie passt die 17jährige Mary Vetsera nun tatsächlich hinein? In January 1889, when Rudolf, the crown prince of Austria, was found dead in an Imperial hunting lodge alongside his 17 year old mistress, Baroness Mary Vestera, it triggered a monumental cover up, a crisis that shook the royal families of Europe, and changed the direction of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, one of the world's great powers. Some believe it even helped set the scene for the outbreak of the First World War by removing the reformer Rudolf from the line of succession and replacing him eventually with the very different Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination triggered the conflict.Writer Lucy Coatman lives and works in Vienna where she is writing a new book on the case. Content warning: Suicide This week, we take a little trip over to the Austro-Hungarian Emprire in the latter half of the 19th century to meet one of the more scandalous figures of his age - and a man whose death most likely put the world on the path toward World War I. Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria grew up in an emotionally and physically abusive environment, tormented by the military official in charge of his education and ignored by his mother, whose affection he craved. Bookish and forward-thinking, young Rudolf clashed often with his father, Emperor Franz Joseph, and struck out on his own as a Playboy Prince, nurturing a close friendship with Queen Victoria's heir, Bertie, Prince of Wales. While forced into a loveless marriage, Rudolf didn't slow his extracurriculars for even a minute; he would later contract, and share with his unsuspecting wife, gonorrhoea, and it's thought that the Prince himself may have contracted syphilis as well. These are all unseemly things, to be sure, but it is the murder-suicide that ended both Crown Prince Rudolf's life, as well as his 17-year-old mistress's, that shook up the line of succession, forged a tight alliance with Germany, and seems to have inevitably led to the beginning of hostilities in 1914. Za uzamčenými dveřmi ložnice přišla o život také sedmnáctiletá baronka Marie Vetserová, o jejíž přítomnosti nikdo z hostů nevěděl, a o níž se v kuloárech již delší dobu šuškalo, že má ke korunnímu princi blíž, než by bylo záhodno. Císař, jehož jediný syn zde na prahu jedenatřiceti let zemřel, uvalil na celou událost přísné informační embargo. Vyšetřování bylo zastaveno a novinářům důrazně doporučeno, aby Rudolfovu smrt ve svých článcích již nezmiňovali. I am very pleased to share my conversation with historian Lucy Coatman. Lucy has an undergrad in Theology but will soon be completing her Mlitt at St Andrew's University. Her main focus is 19th century women. However, Lucy is particularly fascinated by Baroness Mary Vetsera. Baroness Mary was found dead with heir to the Austro Hungarian thrown: Crown Prince Rudolph. Their bodies were discovered at Mayerling hunting lodge, approximately 20 miles outside Vienna, on 30th January 1889. This story has been heavily dramatised on stage and screen, but Lucy helps us clear up the fact from the fiction by charting us through what we know and what we'll never know about one of history's most fascinating and tragic tales. Umso mysteriöser sind die Umstände seines Todes, die bis heute nicht restlos aufgeklärt sind. Rudolf starb im Jänner 1889 auf seinem Jagdschloss in Mayerling im Wienerwald. Todesursache war ein Schuss. Mit ihm fand die junge Baroness Mary Vetsera den Tod. Nach über 100 Jahren sieht alles danach aus, als hätte der Kronprinz seine Gefährtin ermordet und sich dann selbst das Leben genommen. Ein Skandal, der damals seinesgleichen suchte und unweigerlich zu Spekulationen führte. Starb die junge Baroness freiwillig? Warum nahm sich der junge Rudolf überhaupt das Leben? Steckt ein Komplott dahinter und Feinde des Kaiserreiches ließen den Tod nur wie einen Selbstmord aussehen? Daniel Benzali joins the cast of ABC's long-running and mutli-Emmy Award winning GENERAL HOSPITAL in the recurring role of Theo, a hypochondriac patient who befriends Dr. Robin Scorpio. Benzali was a theatre actor before making guest-starring roles on television series such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, The X-Files, NYPD Blue and L.A. Law. Because Steven Bochco was so impressed with Benzali's performance on the long-running NBC series, he cast him in the lead role of his 1995 series Murder One, playing attorney Ted Hoffman. For this role he was nominated for a Golden Globe award. In addition, Benzali starred on the series The Agency, and in films such as By Dawn's Early Light (1990), Murder at 1600 (1997) and The Grey Zone (2001). He also appeared in the post-apocalyptic CBS series Jericho as the enigmatic former Department of Homeland Security director Thomas Valente. Most recently he starred in the FX television series "Nip/Tuck" as the main character's psychotherapist and later patient, Dr. Griffin. On the stage, he portrayed Juan Peron in the London cast of Evita, and played faded film director Max von Mayerling, alongside Patti LuPone, in the original cast (1993) of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard. Benzali had previously appeared on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof, and other smaller productions.

Mayerling 1/9/39 Lux Radio Theater, one of the genuine classic radio anthology series (NBC Blue Network (1934-1935); CBS (1935-1955), adapted first Broadway stage works, and then (especially) films to hour-long live radio presentations. It quickly became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, running more than twenty years. The program always began with an announcer proclaiming, "Ladies and gentlemen, Lux presents Hollywood!" Cecil B. DeMille was the host of the series each Monday evening from June 1, 1936, until January 22, 1945.
