Die   Lieblingsnichte Kaiserin Elisabeths wurde zur 'Persona non grata' degradiert, Kaiser Franz Joseph verbannte sie vom Wiener Hof. Doch das Leben Marie Larisch geht weiter. Als Schriftstellerin wird sie sich versuchen, als Schauspielerin und Drehbuchautorin. Kaum eine Person außerhalb der Wiener Hofburg jedoch ahnt, dass mit der verarmten Gräfin auch die größte Erpresserin des österreichischen Kaiserhauses heranwächst. Bald schon aber bahnten sich Gerüchte und Spekulationen aller Art den Weg in die Öffentlichkeit, ein Kampf  gegen den ausufernden Skandal begann, der bis zum Tod Kaiser Franz Josephs nicht mehr beendet werden konnte. Eine Vielzahl an Schriften, Artikeln und Büchern wurde verfasst, Gewinnsucht und der Wunsch nach Rehabilitierung ließen viele zur Feder greifen. Das Schicksal der toten Mary Vetsera indes blieb ein unwürdiges, pietätlos war der Umgang mit ihren sterblichen Überresten, bis weit in das 20 Jh. hinein. Doch welche Auswirkungen hatte die Affäre Mayerling  auf das österreichische Kaiserhaus und wie ging es mit den involvierten Personen weiter? Höre hier den letzten Teil der Trilogie rund um das Ableben Kronprinz Rudolfs und Baronesse Mary Vetseras und erfahre mehr zu den Hintergründen und Konsequenzen.

Um 12.00 Uhr machte Gräfin Marie Larisch im Verhör nachweislich falsche Angaben bezüglich Marys Verbleib. Baronin Helene Vetsera, Marys Mutter, wurde um 13.00 Uhr bereits von bösen Vorahnungen heimgesucht. Und Kronprinz Rudolf steuerte seine Kutsche auf Umwegen durch das winterliche Wien, Mayerling entgegen. Kurz vor 16.00 Uhr schließlich, als die Sonne bereits sank, trafen die ProtagonistInnen der berühmten Affäre um Mord und Selbstmord in dem abgelegenen Jagdschloss ein. Ein dunkles Geflecht aus Lügen und Halbwahrheiten, aus Schutzbehauptungen und Verleumdungen sollte an jenem 28. Kronprinz Rudolf und Baronesse Mary Vetsera treten sie nicht gemeinsam an, erst vor den Toren Wiens trifft man sich, um über vereiste Strassen langsam gen Mayerling zu fahren. All das ist geplant, all das wurde vorbereitet. Noch während die beiden unterwegs sind steigt in Wien die Nervosität. Schon um die Mittagsstunde wird Gräfin Marie Larisch, deren Rolle in dieser Affäre  sie zu einer der meist verachteten Personen der Monarchie  werden lässt, durch eine Falschaussage versuchen, sich von den Vorgängen zu distanzieren. Baronin Helene Vetsera, Marys Mutter, lässt hektisch Erkundigungen über den Verbleib ihrer Tochter einziehen, und Alexander Baltazzi, Marys Onkel und Vormund, mutmaßt bereits an dieser Stelle über eine Beteiligung des Kronprinzen. Le 30 janvier 1889, l'archiduc Rodolphe, seul fils de l'Empereur d'Autriche François-Joseph et de l'Impératrice Elisabeth, dite "Sissi", est retrouvé mort dans son pavillon de chasse de Mayerling, à quelques kilomètres de Vienne.Près de lui, gît, morte elle aussi, sa jeune maîtresse, la baronne Marie Vetsera. La thèse du suicide courut aussitôt. On ne sait si les deux amants se seraient suicidés en même temps ou si le prince avait d'abord tué sa maîtresse avant de retourner l'arme contre lui.De fait, plusieurs témoignages dépeignent l'archiduc comme très déprimé à cette époque de sa vie. Quelque temps avant sa mort, l'archiduc aurait eu une dispute violente avec son père, qui l'aurait sommé de rompre avec la baronne Vetsera.Le jeune homme aurait d'abord refusé, puis accepté finalement. Mais sa maîtresse lui annonçant qu'elle était enceinte, les deux amants auraient finalement décidé de mourir ensemble. Rodolphe aurait même écrit une lettre à sa mère, où il expliquait son geste fatal.Enfin, on a également découvert des lettes d'adieu que la baronne Vetsera a adressées à sa famille.Certains historiens ne croient pas au suicide et pensent plutôt que l'archiduc Rodolphe a été assassiné. Ils se fondent notamment sur le témoignage de l'Impératrice Zita, femme du dernier Empereur d'Autriche, Charles Ier.En 1983, l'Impératrice, alors très âgée, assure que l'archiduc a été assassiné.
