On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the new word the Marxists are using to justify the fundamental transformation of America is affordability. Marxist regimes produce shortages, impoverishment, and dislocation—not prosperity. This is equality in destitution, enforced by coercion and a police state. New York is expensive due to soft-Marxism: rent controls, high taxes, smothering regulations, powerful unions. It will depopulate workers and businesses, attracting destitute, welfare recipients, and illegal aliens. As unlivable, Marxist grip tightens with unhinged rhetoric. Marxism is failed, inhumane, evil, attracting demagogues like Zohran Mamdani, akin to young Fidel Castro claiming democracy. Over time, the tension between institutional constraints and self-aggrandizement erodes safeguards, turning them into facades that enable soft negative power. The result is authoritarian democracy, which is what Mamdani is promoting. Also, wealth redistribution is destructive to wealth creation, as it discourages producers who may reduce output, stop, or relocate (e.g., fleeing New York City), leaving less to redistribute. It's a flawed idea requiring surrender of individual liberty to inexperienced ideologues, historically causing mass starvation and death. True equality means just laws for all, not unattainable economic equality . Instead, we should celebrate freedom and capitalism, enabling ordinary Americans—like plumbers or drivers—to enjoy abundant choices and live better than past kings, while government represents socialism and individuals embody capitalism. Success, once valued, is now undermined by DEI. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Dale Earnhardt Jr welcomes in his father's championship-winning crew chief Doug Richert for a special edition of the Dale Jr Download. On the heels of the Becoming Earnhardt: 1980 series, the two dive into Dale Earnhardt's sophomore season & first Cup Championship. Doug was only 20 years old at the time, but he has plenty of stories to tell. Doug's relationship with Dale Earnhardt went beyond the race track, as he shares stories of the two of them spending time waterskiing on the lake in between race weekends. The #2 team started the season swinging, winning the Busch Clash in Daytona. From there, the team won races at Atlanta & Bristol and were early contenders for the Winston Cup Championship. In the middle of the season, Crew Chief Jake Elder leaves the team, suddenly putting Doug in charge. He talks about the abrupt transition to the Crew Chief role and what challenges he and the team faced. Dale and Doug discuss the #2 team's main opponents and how they weren't afraid to ruffle feathers along the way. Doug also shares the story of winning the championship at Ontario and why he got in trouble for taking an unauthorized victory lap in Dale's car. In November 2004, New York couple Peter and Joan Porco were brutally attacked in their bed with an ax. Peter died at the scene. Joan survived and nodded “yes” when a detective asked her if her son Christopher was their attacker. After she recovered from the attack, Joan said she didn't recall that nod and that Christopher was innocent. “48 Hours" Correspondent Peter Van Sant reports. Join our Patreon family for exclusive bonus content, access to BTS, a private group chat, merch discounts, and to guest co-host with Investigator Slater! www.Patreon.com/PsychopediaPod Inspired by Gary Ridgway and Ted Bundy, serial killer Joel Rifin modeled his victimology and body disposable methods like a grotesque homage: limbs in cement, heads in paint cans, bodies dumped with calculated precision. For four years in the late 1980s/early 90s, while living with his mother in the heart of suburban Long Island, NY, Joel Rifkin hunted women on the margins. Joel, a bullied outcast with a high IQ and a severely damaged frontal lobe, didn't explode overnight. He eroded. First came the fantasies. Then came the reality of 17 victims whom he strangled and dismembered with an X-Acto knife. Joel blended in — just another quiet man with a sedan, a part time job, and a taste for sadism. This wasn't some obvious "monster" lurking in the shadows. This was a depraved serial killer next door, hiding in plain sight, mowing the same lawns your kids play on. For decades, residents of the small city of Newburgh, New York, were unknowingly drinking water contaminated with toxic PFAS—also known as forever chemicals. The source turned out to be firefighting foam used on a nearby air base that had seeped into streams and creeks, and ultimately the city's main drinking water reservoir. Now, Newburgh is one of 10 sites that are part of a CDC-led study investigating the health effects of PFAS exposure. Early data out of Newburgh links PFAS with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Host Flora Lichtman discusses the research with environmental epidemiologist Erin Bell and reporter Shantal Riley.Read our full story about what PFAS contamination has meant for Newburgh in English and in Spanish.Guests: Shantal Riley is an award-winning journalist and science writer, focused on environmental health.Dr. Erin Bell is an environmental epidemiologist at the University at Albany in New York.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Many Trump voters were under the naive impression that his administration would release information about Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirators in his child trafficking operation. So it came as a shock when the DOJ released a memo claiming that they couldn't find any “client list,” there is no evidence of Epstein blackmail activities, and they did not find “evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties.” Not even MAGA loyalists are buying this. Jake, Julian, and Travis try to make sense of the DOJ's blundering attempt to put an end to Epstein chatter, discuss how the memo contradicts previous statements by FBI Director Kash Patel, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, and explore whether this is scandalous enough to fracture Trump's base for good. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's xAI secured a $200M Defense Department contract days after Grok declared itself “MechaHitler” and spewed antisemitic content. The Supreme Court paused an order blocking 1,400 layoffs at the Education Department, just as 24 states and D.C. sued the Trump administration over $7B in frozen education funds. The administration is also appealing a court order banning immigration arrests without probable cause, even as ICE agents express deep dissatisfaction with the politically driven deportation focus. In Congress, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez proposed giving the ethics office power to review lawmakers' cognitive fitness. And in New York, Andrew Cuomo—undeterred by his primary loss—launched an independent bid for mayor, joining a crowded field for November's ballot. Self proclaimed Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani meeting with New York City's leading CEOs who employ thousands at some of the world's biggest companies, such as JPMorgan and Pfizer. Business owners in New York are very concerned about Mamdani's anti-capitalist policies including increasing taxes on the rich to pay for housing rent freezes, free public transit and city run grocery stores. This a day after former Governor Andrew Cuomo says he will be staying in the race despite losing to Mamdani in the primary by a double digit margin. Fox's John Saucier speaks to Bryan Llenas, National Correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC) based in New York, who says besides the concerns of business owners there are Jewish leaders also sounding the alarm over the candidate's use of the phrase 'globalize the intifada'. Andrew Cuomo is still trying to matter. That's the clearest takeaway from his latest appearance — a campaign reboot so empty and unconvincing it bordered on parody. After blowing a 60-point lead in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor to Zohran Mamdani, Cuomo continues to operate as if he didn't just have — and squander — his best shot. It wasn't a close race. It wasn't an upset. It was a humiliation, and it made Mamdani a star. Cuomo didn't just lose; he handed the spotlight to the person who beat him. What's most baffling is Cuomo's unwillingness to run as anything other than himself. His latest ad is a watered-down version of Mamdani's campaign. Mamdani talked to people across the city about affordability — and even if his ideas were divisive, they were ideas. Cuomo's pitch? Affordability. No vision. No contrast. Just a stale echo of a message he neither originated nor sharpened. If Cuomo wanted to offer something Mamdani couldn't, he had options. He could've leaned into public safety, into the fear felt by many New Yorkers. He could've campaigned from a synagogue, framed himself as the candidate who would safeguard Jewish communities, and tied Mamdani to the left wing of the party in a way that forced a choice. Instead, we got nothing.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. There's no attack line, no clear point of differentiation. Cuomo could've said: this is de Blasio 2.0. He could've framed Mamdani as a performance artist backed by a failed administration. He didn't. Instead, he gave voters a lifeless, mimicry-driven campaign with no policy edge. And that brings us to what he is actually running on: his name. For a sliver of voters — the “Cuomosexuals” who liked Mario, liked Andrew, maybe even liked Chris — that might be enough. But for everyone else, Cuomo looks like a man clinging to a legacy that no longer serves him. This also highlights why “Stop ‘X' Candidate” movements almost never work. Ego ruins coordination. Eric Adams isn't dropping out — he's the sitting mayor. Cuomo still acts like running is beneath him. Curtis Sliwa isn't a serious enough contender to pull votes in a general election. And despite the specter of Mamdani's ideology frightening national Democrats, no consensus candidate has emerged. If there were a moderate Republican hedge fund type — pro-choice, socially liberal — that person could shake things up. But they don't exist here. Not this cycle.Ultimately, national Republicans are thrilled. They see Mamdani as a gift. Mike Johnson and Donald Trump will seize on his victory to cast New York as the face of socialism in America — a symbol of excess, decline, and failed progressivism. It's a setup for the midterms. They're ready to prey on any misstep, real or imagined. And unless something changes fast, the ‘Stop Zohran' movement isn't materializing. Not because it couldn't — but because no one in the race knows how to make it happen. Cuomo had his chance. He whiffed.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:02:37 - Cuomo Stays in NYC Race00:11:36 - Update00:12:05 - Inflation Report00:15:26 - Recissions Package00:18:45 - Israel00:19:55 - Interview with Emily Jashinsky00:59:15 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Chef Shuai Wang was the runner-up on the 22nd season of Bravo's Top Chef and is the force behind two standout restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina—Jackrabbit Filly and King BBQ—where he brings together the flavors of his childhood in Beijing and the spirit of the South in some pretty unforgettable ways. He grew up just a short walk from Tiananmen Square, in a tiny home with no electricity or running water, where his grandmother often cooked over charcoal. Later, in Queens, New York, his mom taught herself to cook—her first dishes were a little salty, but they were always made with love. And somewhere along the way, Shuai learned that cooking wasn't just about food—it was about taking care of people. After years working in New York kitchens, he made his way to Charleston and started building something that feels entirely his own. Today, we're talking about how all those experiences come together on the plate, the family stories behind his cooking, and what it's been like to share that journey on national TV. It marks the beginning of the Galveston Movement, a forgotten moment in history when 10,000 Jews fled to Texas in the lead-up to WWI. In today's episode historian and author Rachel Cockerell tells this fascinating story in conversation with James McAuley, journalist and Global Opinions contributing columnist at the Washington Post. He highlights the Marxist policies of candidate Zohran Mamdani and their potential impact on New York City, such as rent freezes and public land requisition for housing. It's been said that Muriel Spark's career was not so much a life as a plot, and she did indeed repeatedly reinvent herself, closing one chapter of her life and opening another, regardless of how many friends and business associates she abandoned along the way. This month the Slightly Foxed team were joined by Muriel Spark's biographer Martin Stannard, and Spark enthusiast Emily Rhodes of Emily's Walking Book Club, to discuss the work of this highly original and somewhat forgotten writer and learn how Muriel first invited Martin to write her biography and then did her best to prevent it seeing the light of day. Born in 1918, Muriel grew up in a working class family in Edinburgh – the setting for her most famous novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which was based on a charismatic teacher at her own school. At the age of 19 she closed that chapter of her life by marrying an older maths teacher, Sydney Oswald Spark, known (appropriately) thereafter as SOS, and going with him to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) where their son Robin was born. Unfortunately it soon became obvious that Sydney had severe psychiatric problems and in 1943 Muriel left husband and son and returned to London where she began her career as a novelist. Several times shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and much admired by Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene, Muriel produced 22 novels, most of them drawing on events in her own life. Everyone at the Slightly Foxed table had their favourites, including The Girls of Slender Means, A Far Cry from Kensington, Loitering with Intent, and Memento Mori, a clear eyed and also very funny look at old age. Everyone agreed on the brilliance of her writing with its dark humour, preoccupation with the supernatural and with the presence of evil in unlikely places. Her life was equally fascinating, moving from poverty to great wealth and success, and from the shabbier parts of London to intellectual life in New York centred on The New Yorker magazine, to which she became a contributor. In 1954 she was received into the Roman Catholic church and for some time she lived in Rome, relishing the glitter of Italian high society, finally settling in Tuscany with her friend Penelope Jardine, where she died in 2005. Summer reading recommendations included Caledonian Road by Andrew O'Hagan, Death at the Sign of the Rook by Kate Atkinson, Homework by Geoff Dyer and Of Thorn and Briar by Paul Lamb. Martin also praised Electric Spark, the new – and very different – biography of Muriel Spark by Frances Wilson. For episode show notes, please see the Slightly Foxed website. Opening music: Preludio from Violin Partita No. 3 in E Major by Bach Hosted by Rosie Goldsmith Produced by Philippa Goodrich
Today we're covering Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld! Aside from reading Austen, this is our first ever straight-up book review! Spoiler alert for Eligible. This adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is set in 2013 Cincinnati. The eldest Bennet sisters are approaching 40 and Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are country club parents who don't care that they're deep in debt. Jane and Liz end up back in Cincinnati when Mr. Bennet has a heart attack.Topics discussed include our honest criticisms of the book, the success of the class commentary, the splitting of Wick/Ham, Darcy and Liz as fuck buddies, the Catherine de Bourgh-ification of Caroline Bingley, kissing your cousin, the charade of love and performance of courtship on reality TV, ace Mary, mortgages, and gender roles in the regency era vs. early 2010s.Funniest quote: Surely, if Liz had learned that anybody in her social circle in New York had eloped with somebody transgender, she'd have greeted the news with support. She might even have felt that self-congratulatory pride that heterosexual white people are known to experience due to proximate diversity.Questions: Do you agree with our criticisms? Have you read the other books in the Austen Project? How seriously did you take the book? Who wins the book? The Pogues would be forgiven for thinking they shouldn't carry on after the death of frontman Shane MacGowan. It was his voice and songwriting that gave the band that extra special spark. Luckily, they won't be putting the band to bed just yet. Founding member Spider Stacy joins us this week to discuss their decision to get back out there in front of the fans on tour this fall, celebrate their legacy, and keep those incredible songs alive. We also get into the continuing impact of "Fairytale of New York", the period in the 90s when Shane left the band, and the stories behind several of their best songs. Along with the Chieftains, the Pogues have done more to keep traditional Irish folk music alive than just about anyone else and they remain one of Ireland's greatest musical exports. We're lucky to have them! www.pogues.com

How did a 180-year-old Italian digestif become one of America's most beloved bar staples? Though Fernet-Branca has enjoyed a storied legacy in Europe since its creation in 1845, it remained a niche curiosity in the United States for much of its life. The intensely bitter, herbal liqueur was appreciated only by the most adventurous palates. Today, however, it's a fixture behind the bar from upscale cocktail lounges to neighborhood dive bars, most often knocked back in shot form and celebrated for its distinct flavor profile. Who better to trace Fernet-Branca's unlikely rise than Edoardo Branca, managing director of Branca USA and a sixth-generation member of the family behind the brand? We caught up with Edoardo at spirits industry trade show Bar Convent Brooklyn to talk about how Fernet-Branca earned its cult status in the U.S. He shared insights on the brand's roots, its journey from obscure digestif to bartender favorite, and how the company is carefully evolving to stay relevant in a fast-changing drinks culture. From navigating pricing pressures to expanding the Branca USA portfolio with modern, consumer-focused offerings, Edoardo explains how he is stewarding a legacy while embracing innovation. Show notes: 0:25: Interview: Edoardo Branca, Managing Director, Branca USA – Eduardo talks about his journey from Milan (he's an Inter fan) to Southern California and ultimately to New York. He also discusses his current role in which he oversees U.S. operations and highlights the most personally rewarding aspect of his job. Edorado explains how Fernet Branca became popular within the bartender community after gaining traction as a popular shot in 1990s San Francisco, the emotional resonance many have with their first Fernet experience and reflects on the global cultural differences in how it's consumed. He acknowledges generational shifts and concerns about declining alcohol consumption among younger drinkers, but expresses confidence that appreciation for spirits and bar culture will mature with age and experience. Edorado also talks about the growing Branca portfolio, noting that lower-ABV products like Antica Formula vermouth align with growing health-conscious trends and also shares his philosophy on mergers and acquisitions. //The Wire//2000Z July 15, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: FLOODING CONTINUES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. CONCERNS GROWING REGARDING SHIFTING PRIORITIES IN WASHINGTON.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Syria: Conflict has erupted once again, as fighting has flared up between Druze militias and the collection of Bedouin and pro-government forces loosely aligned under al-Jolani's new regime. A few hundred casualties have been reported in the town of Suwayda over the weekend, and a very hesitant "ceasefire" has been declared after this latest round of fighting.-HomeFront-Colorado: Following a high-profile kidnapping attempt that occurred in Aurora last year, a District Attorney has faced backlash for her efforts to free the perpetrator of the attack. Solomon Galligan was arrested for attempting to kidnap a child on the street in Aurora last year, and on Monday reports emerged that DA Amy Padden was attempting to drop all charges against him because he was found mentally incompetent to stand trial.USA: Flooding incidents continue as before, with heavy rainfall causing flooding throughout New York and New Jersey overnight. In Texas, recovery efforts continue amid constant heavy rainfall, with roughly 160x persons still being reported missing from the initial flooding crisis that struck the Guadalupe River basin two weeks ago. The casualty count for the floods in Texas so far remains at 132x reported fatalities.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: At the moment, the White House appears to be radically shifting priorities on many different issues. The shift to cover up the Epstein client list, and to hush-up all aspects of the case is without question a bridge too far for most people to accept. Claiming that the largest known human trafficking network in the world simply had no clients is an incredulous turning point in history that President Trump will not be able to walk away from hoping that everyone forgets. Likewise, relations between the United States and Russia have deteriorated further following the events of the past few days. The war in Ukraine has sharply veered away from any sort of peace agreement, with the United States ramping up arms shipments to Ukraine once again. Though nothing is confirmed at this point, the usual leaks have indicated that the White House is considering the next wave of aid to Ukraine, and what weapons systems it will entail. Some whispers suggest the US will allow Ukraine to increase direct attacks on Moscow with American arms, and other rumors suggest that the US is looking to send more capable arms and missiles with which to continue the war. Time will tell what is decided, but the bottom line is that the flow chart is pointing toward an increase in the war's activity, and all parties are trending away from peace talks.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

Dr. Mark Jacobson is a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Atmosphere Energy Program at Stanford University, where he's been one of the most vocal advocates for powering the world entirely with wind, water, and solar energy. No nuclear, no carbon capture, no fossil fuels of any kind. His research team has created 100% renewable energy roadmaps for all 50 U.S. states and 149 countries, helping shape policies like New York's clean energy mandate. In this episode, Dr. Jacobson shares his perspective on where we are in the renewables adoption curve and explains why he believes that technologies like nuclear power, carbon capture, and biofuels aren't just unnecessary, they're harmful distractions from the clean energy transition he sees as both achievable and urgent. This conversation may be polarizing. While many will agree with Mark's take on renewables and the grid, his firm rejection of other low-carbon tech challenges mainstream climate thinking. We believe these fault lines are worth exploring, even, or especially, when they make people uncomfortable.Episode recorded on June 30, 2025 (Published on July 15, 2025)In this episode, we cover: [02:32] Why proposed tax changes threaten renewables[05:45] Fossil fuel subsidies vs. renewables support[06:29] China's rapid clean energy deployment[10:44] Rooftop solar offsets California's rising demand[12:20] Home and utility batteries reshaping grid usage[14:40] Texas grid inefficiencies and renewables progress[18:21] Combining wind, solar and batteries[19:26] Land use myths about wind and solar[22:49] Dr. Mark Jacobson's background and research[27:23] How to phase out existing fossil infrastructure[31:36] Dr. Jacobson's rejection of carbon capture[36:52] His thoughts on nuclear[42:11] Dr. Jacobson's thoughts on geothermal[46:19] How he sees the next decade unfolding Enjoyed this episode?
