I didn't know that.” We watched “Kissing Jessica Stein” with the insightful Samantha Mann, author of “Dyke Delusions: Essays & Observations.”  Sitting with Sam talking about this touchstone of queer/lesbian cinema really hammers home that the two of us are just a couple of dumb boys. This movie harkens back to a pre-9/11 New York as well as the cinema landscape. This was a time when, yes, representation did matter, but so did a quirky downtown apartment with exposed brick that you could afford to live in without multiple roommates. We all talk about the quality of “gay” movies in the 90's and early aughts, but the lesbian movies were practically nonexistent - so the representation we got in this movie was a total necessity - not to mention the entire “lipstick” element of it all. Jennifer Westfeldt (Jessica) and Heather Juergensen (Helen) co-wrote this screenplay based on their play “Lipschtick,” and the labor put into it really pays off. The screenplay is tight, funny, and holds up (to mild scrutiny) 24 years later. Episode No. 720 is a summer clips episode featuring artist Tidawhitney Lek. Lek is among the 30+ artists featured in "Spirit House" at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. The exhibition considers how 33 contemporary artists of Asian descent challenge the boundary between life and death through art, including how the spiritual relates to diaspora, connections to ancestral homelands, and the experience of feeling present within multiple cultures and multiple geographies. The show's curatorial framework was inspired by spirit houses, small devotional structures found throughout Thailand that provide shelter for the supernatural. "Spirit House" originated at the Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University, and was curated by Aleesa Pitchamarn Alexander with Kathryn Cua. It is on view in Seattle through January 11, 2026. An excellent exhibition catalogue, titled “Spirit House: Hauntings in Contemporary Art of the Asian Diaspora,” was published by the Cantor and Gregory R. Miller & Co. Lek is a southern California-based, Cambodian-American artist whose work examines narratives surrounding and the daily experiences of a first-generation American born to immigrant parents. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, and she's been featured in the Made in LA biennial at the Hammer Museum, University of California, Los Angeles. If you want to know which artist is having the biggest year in museums, there is one name that springs to mind for me: Cara Romero. Since her first big breakout a decade ago at Santa Fe Indian Market, Romero has been steadily growing in influence. If you don't know it yet, her photo-based art is full of color, drama, and detail. It's sometimes funny, sometimes fantastical. And it moves between a variety of themes that are extremely important in museums right now: Indigenous identities, environmental concern, science fiction, and staged or set-up photography, to name a few. For that reason, Romero finds her work part of many surveys and touring exhibitions at the moment. She had this year a mid-career retrospective at the Hood Museum at Dartmouth, “Cara Romero: Panûpünüwügai,” meaning “Living Light.” She also has a two-person spotlight with her husband, the artist Diego Romero, called “Tales of Future Past,” currently at the Crocker art Museum in Sacramento. For someone who has risen to the very top of the museum circuit, Romero has had a unique career path and story.
