Today we had the pleasure of hosting our good friend Dr. Ken Medlock, Fellow in Energy and Resource Economics and Senior Director of the Center for Energy Studies at Rice University's Baker Institute. Ken joined the Rice University faculty in 2004 and holds adjunct professor appointments in the Department of Economics and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in addition to serving as director of the Master of Energy Economics program. He is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, and a sought-after voice on Capitol Hill, at OPEC, and in the media. The Baker Institute plays a key role in shaping energy policy debates in both the U.S. and globally and we were thrilled to welcome Ken to hear his latest insights on today's evolving energy landscape. In our discussion, we explore oil market dynamics and pricing, Middle East geopolitical complexity, Kuwait's production expansion plans, U.S. policy, including how recent grant eliminations impact the economics of carbon capture projects, as well as the importance of distinguishing short-term volatility from long-term energy strategy. We review the current state of carbon capture technology, with high costs remaining a significant barrier, the potential long-term opportunity to convert captured CO2 into valuable products, the potential impact of rolling back EPA emission rules on future generation mix, and how strong electricity demand growth will require all types of generation to meet future needs. Ken shares his perspective on the importance and challenges of coordination across U.S. energy agencies, the critical importance of supply chain resilience, how geopolitical risk premiums shape oil markets, and potential market impact if Iran advances its nuclear capabilities. We cover potential disruptions to energy flow through the Strait of Hormuz, the roles of the U.S. and Israel in Middle East tensions, OPEC+'s decision to accelerate production, low global inventories, and the Baker Institute's growth and expansion across ten programs. We also touch on the interconnectedness of energy and other sectors, the need to re-educate on supply chain dynamics, the intersection of energy infrastructure and disaster preparedness, evolving student interest in energy at Rice, and much more. It was a fantastic and wide-ranging conversation spanning many critical aspects of energy today. Mike Bradley kicked off the show by noting that the S&P 500 has rallied back to within 2% of its all-time high, while the S&P 500 Volatility (VIX) is hovering near YTD lows, which is a dangerous combination. U.S. equity markets appear to be largely driven by the ups/downs of Trump's “Big Beautiful Budget Bill” and tariff negotiations. On the bond side, the U.S. 10-year bond yield (4.45%) has traded sideways so far this week, but that could shift quickly given that several key economic reports are on deck this week, which also could go a long way in determining what the FED does at their June 18th FOMC Rate Decision Meeting. From a crude oil market standpoint, WTI price has recently surged to ~$65/bbl which has caught oil traders by surprise. The front-end of the WTI curve is trading in backwardation, while the back end of the curve is in contango, mostly due to a substantial global S/D surplus that's expected beginning in Q4'25. Last week, OPEC+ agreed to raise July production by ~0.4mmbpd (total 3mo production increase of ~1.2mmbpd), but these “stated” production increases are much higher than “actual” barrels that have entered the market, which is beginning to raise questions around OPEC's “real” spare production capacity. He further noted that Canadian wildfires, Iran nuclear deal delays, and the plunge in U.S. oil rig count (~40 rigs) over the last two months have all combined to move WTI price higher. He ended by highlighting that the EIA released its Short-Term Energy Outlook report this week, which forecasted that U.S. cru

My guest for Episode #528 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is Mark Reich, a Senior Lean Coach with the Lean Enterprise Institute and former Toyota leader with over two decades of experience. Episode page with video, transcript, and more Mark spent six years working in Japan, including helping launch the Lexus brand and later leading Hoshin Kanri strategy processes during Toyota's rapid growth in North America. He also played a pivotal role at the Toyota Supplier Support Center (TSSC), helping bring the Toyota Production System to manufacturing, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations. In our conversation, we dive into his career journey, his approach to Lean leadership, and the practical lessons behind his new book, Managing on Purpose: Using Hoshin Kanri to Develop Strategy, Align Teams, Grow Leaders, and Innovate Your Enterprise. You can get a 25% discount on the book via LEI using the code LBIPODCAST25. Mark shares compelling stories from his early days at Toyota, including working on the front lines of assembly, learning by doing, and his first experience pulling the andon cord. These moments shaped his appreciation for Toyota's deep respect for frontline work and its commitment to developing people. He reflects on how Toyota embeds learning and support into problem solving, where pulling the cord is seen as a learning opportunity, not a failure. That mindset became foundational for his later work, especially when managing enterprise-wide strategy through Hoshin Kanri. We also explore what Hoshin Kanri really is--and what it isn't. Mark challenges the overemphasis on tools like the X-matrix and instead advocates for focusing on purpose, alignment, and leadership behavior. He explains how strategy deployment at Toyota was never a one-way cascade, but a dialogue grounded in humility, curiosity, and shared responsibility. Whether you're new to Hoshin or struggling to sustain it, Mark offers insights that can help any leader make strategy a living, breathing part of organizational culture. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: How did you end up working for Toyota, and what led you to Japan? What was your educational background, and did you already speak Japanese before moving there? What was your initial role at Toyota, and how did it relate to their global expansion? Did you meet or work with John Shook during your time in Japan? How did Toyota develop you into an industrial engineer despite your background in English writing? What was it like working in a Toyota plant, and what did you learn from that experience? Did you experience any early mistakes or learning moments while working the line? How did your role evolve after leaving Japan, and how did you get involved with Hoshin Kanri in North America? What challenges was Toyota North America facing that made Hoshin Kanri so essential? How did you facilitate alignment and catchball between Toyota's plants and leadership teams? How do you define Hoshin, strategy, and Hoshin Kanri? Why do you prefer not to use the term "strategy deployment," and what's the issue with top-down-only thinking? How do you coach executives to embrace catchball and bottom-up engagement? How do you balance executive direction with frontline input in strategy development? What role does psychological safety play in making Hoshin Kanri work? How does A3 problem solving fit into the Hoshin process, and how does it help build capability? Why is it important for executives to practice PDCA and engage in direct problem solving? What's the difference between long-cycle and short-cycle PDCA, and how should leaders manage both? Why does it take most organizations a couple of years to fully embed Hoshin Kanri? What lessons do companies learn when they start with too many strategic initiatives? Why did you choose not to include the X-matrix in your book, and what are your thoughts on its use? What business problems does Hoshin Kanri best help organizations solve? How can Hoshin Kanri help clarify the distinction between daily management and long-term strategic work This podcast is part of the #LeanCommunicators network.

I'm certainly not educated well enough to say what exactly has led to the dramatic reductions in global testosterone levels, be it plastics, sugars, antibiotics, processed chemicals, or whatever else. However, my guest today is a hormone replacement expert, so we'll find out together!   Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.  My guest today is Susie Bell. Susie has over three decades of experience helping patients, many of whom struggle to keep their natural hormones in check as the years go on. For women, it's widely acknowledged to be an issue around menopause; but for men, it can happen in your late teens! That's a shock, but so are the many messages that you'll hear actually explained when we give the topic room to explain itself. Thank you so much to everyone in Japan who made the first international tour such an absolute blast! I've never felt 16 days go by so quickly, and I feel I could have spent another hundred days without issue. Hopefully I get to do even more of those big tours in the coming months and years.  Tokyo, Nikko, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Okinawa: Seriously, THANK YOU so much!  ( Https://Www.GetWellWithSusieBell.Com )   ( https://static1.squarespace.com/static/627d7bbb8f061a4300985c07/t/663cf6a8f150ed30ef08d0bb/1715271336480/Susan+Bell_Memoir_Forward.pdf )  Let's fix our imbalances without shame!  As mentioned in the interview, I do know many young men with low Testosterone levels, and that includes myself. Before my father passed away, he and I compared our levels to find that they were almost identical despite being 25 years apart.    In ranking news... May wrapped up while we were on tour: 1. The United States, with California, Wisconsin, and Oregon at the top; sorry Ohio.  2. England of the United Kingdom.  3. Australia, with Queensland well over New South Wales.  4. Canada, with Ontario just barely beating British Columbia.  5. South Africa, just beating Ireland.  That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here next week for another new episode!  Until the next episode, pretty please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe.  Reach out to DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com or on any social media if you want to reach me personally.  Most importantly, Stay Dumb!  #Podcast #Education #HormoneReplacement #Testosterone #GymBro #Semaglutide #Estrodile #Progesterone

Rachel Kennedy, a former dancer, shared a disturbing account of her experience with Sean "Diddy" Combs while in Japan. She claims that during the early 2000s, she was invited by Diddy to what she believed would be a party, but upon arrival, realized it was just a small, intimate gathering with him at his hotel. Kennedy detailed that after some partying, including drug use (although Diddy himself allegedly did not partake), things took an uncomfortable turn.Diddy, wearing a robe and drinking champagne, allegedly showed Kennedy and her friends multiple Jennifer Lopez music videos, which felt awkward given that Diddy was dating Lopez at the time. Eventually, Kennedy and her friend were invited into his bedroom, where they engaged in sexual acts. The situation escalated when Diddy's bodyguard entered the room aggressively, scaring the women. Kennedy described the interaction as unsettling, feeling that the bodyguard was there to intimidate and forcibly remove them, leaving her with the impression that this behavior was calculated and routine in Diddy's circle. This experience, part of Diddy's broader pattern of alleged "Freak Offs"—intimate, drug-fueled gatherings where guests were coerced into sexual acts—highlighted how he allegedly used his power and influence to manipulate those around him, creating a dangerous atmosphere where victims felt they had little recourse.(commercial at 7:44)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Exclusive | Sean 'Diddy' Combs tricked me into a 'Freak Off,' then cruelly kicked me to the curb: ex-dancer (nypost.com)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

How did Japan become embroiled in one of history's deadliest conflicts? The answer lies not in December 1941, but decades earlier. Jonathan Clements returns to unravel the forces that propelled Japan down a path to war with the world's greatest industrial power.Following Japan's victory in the First Sino-Japanese War, the country emerged with new confidence only to face the humiliation of the Triple Intervention, when European powers forced them to surrender their hard-won territories. This sparked a determination to secure Japan's place among world powers, leading to their stunning defeat of Russia in 1904-1905 – a conflict Clements describes as "World War Zero" for its preview of technologies that would dominate WWI battlefields. The narrative takes us through Japan's growing reliance on Manchuria, transformed into the puppet state of Manchukuo under the last Chinese emperor. Here we discover the industrial heartland that supported Japan's imperial ambitions while exploring the darker realities of colonial rule. Perhaps most fascinating is Jonathan's exploration of Japan's internal dissent, from brave parliamentarians like Saito Takao who questioned the endless China conflict to the telling detail of restaurants suddenly serving only squid – a sign the fishing fleet had been devastated by war.As economic pressure mounted in 1941, we witness the fateful deliberations that led to Pearl Harbor, including Admiral Yamamoto's reluctant planning and prescient warning about "waking the American dragon." Through meticulous research and compelling storytelling, Jonathan shows how resource dependency and strategic miscalculations drove Japan toward a confrontation it couldn't win.You can send a message to the show/feedback by clicking here. The Korean War came dangerously close to going nuclear, and if would have if Gen. Douglas MacArthur had gotten his way. He proposed using 30 to 50 nuclear primarily to targeting air bases, depots, and supply lines across the neck of Manchuria to create a radioactive barrier and halt Chinese and North Korean advances. This would have killed millions and almost definitely brought the Soviet Union into full-scale war against the United States. In this episode, we explore the Korean War’s pivotal role in shaping the Cold War, diving into the tense standoff between East and West. The conflict erupted with North Korea’s 1950 invasion, prompting a daring counteroffensive by MacArthur, whose strategic overreach drew Communist China into the fray. The rapid escalation pushed the U.S. to contemplate using nuclear weapons, a decision that could have reshaped the 20th century. To explore this is today’s guest, Robert Lyman, author of “Korea: War Without End.” The Korean War was not planned as a Communist offensive against the West. In turn, the East did not understand the principle at the core of the Western response to Kim Il-sung’s aggression, namely a refusal to appease an aggressor, the key mistake the West considered to be at the heart of the rise of Nazi Germany and militaristic Japan in the 1930s.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
