This week co-host Chris Teague and host Jack Nerad were up to their eyeballs in modern luxury. Teague had the honor of testing the newest model from the prestigious Genesis brand, while Nerad took the wheel of the performance version of the brand's dedicated battery-electric SUV. Both were equipped with the top-rated powertrains in each model's lineup, and both provided impressive eye candy both inside and out. The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Chris tested features a high-performance powertrain—a "twin-charged" V6 engine with both a turbocharger and an “electric supercharger,” delivering 409 horsepower. Inside, it swaps the standard GV80's three-row layout for a sportier two-row cabin, highlighted by a sweeping 27.0-inch digital display and racy design touches like a flat-bottomed steering wheel and metal-accented pedals. Nerad tested the 2025 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD, a small, battery-electric SUV built for enthusiasts, featuring dual motors that produce up to 429 horsepower—or 483 horsepower in Boost Mode. Powered by a 77.4 kWh battery and riding on Hyundai's E-GMP platform, it pairs sharp performance with high-end comfort, offering Nappa leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit, Bang & Olufsen audio, and cutting-edge tech like facial recognition and fingerprint authentication. With sleek touches like 21-inch wheels and a Vision Roof, it delivers both dynamic driving and premium convenience in a zero-emissions package. But at $72,000 as-tested is it a smart luxury-vehicle buy? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. We have a primo guest this week. Bob Broderdorf is the chief executive officer of the Jeep brand and he has also served in top positions with Ram and Dodge. With the American car market in turmoil recently, he will describe how the legendary Jeep brand is making its way forward. We think you'll enjoy the discussion he had with host Jack Nerad. In the news this week, Nissan has announced some new products for North America as it tries to shore up its position here in the United States. We'll have details. Hyundai has just announced that it is making a huge investment in U.S. manufacturing and parts operations, and it includes the establishment of new plant that is likely the first in decades. We'll have more on that. Porsche is upping its tech game, perhaps in response to the BMW announcement we told you about last week. And Toyota has announced a new racing series that might get Chris into the cockpit on the race course. We'll tell you all about that coming up. So we have a lot of show for you this week. NEW 2022 GENESIS GV60 CONFIRMED FOR LAUNCH IN EUROPE THIS YEAR | AUTO EXPRESS - Genesis, the Hyundai Group's premium spin-off brand, has announced that its pure-electric GV60 coupe-SUV will go on sale in Europe later this year. - Key rivals include the Audi Q4 e-tron, Tesla Model Y and Jaguar I-Pace. - The Genesis GV60 is built on the same E-GMP underpinnings as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. It's powered by a 77.4kWh battery pack, which offers a maximum range of 280 miles with the entry-level, single-motor, rear-wheel drive model. - Prices for all three models in the SUV's line-up will be confirmed closer to the car's European launch date. - At the top of the GV60 line-up, there's an even faster Sport Plus variant. It shares the same dual-motor powertrain as the Kia EV6 GT, which means it produces 429bhp and 605Nm of torque. Genesis says this model will sprint from 0–62mph in four seconds flat - Boost Mode. It's activated by a button on the steering wheel, and gives the EV an extra 54bhp and 95Nm of torque to improve overtaking performance. - Drift Mode, which sounds a little out of place on an electric SUV. Genesis hasn't gone into too much detail about how the system works, but we know it alters the torque split of the all-wheel drive system to send more power to the rear motor. - 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes, while the car's maximum AC charging performance (for home charging, for example) has been increased from 7.2kW to 11kW, compared to its Hyundai and Kia-badged siblings. - The infra-red camera picks up the user's face and automatically loads their pre-saved seat and mirror positions, infotainment and head-up display preferences. - The GV60 can also wirelessly receive upgrades for systems such as the suspension, brakes, steering wheel, driver assistance technology and the central brain that controls the car's electric motors and charging system. "As a result, we've made replacements available to Bolt EV owners who were in our high priority groups." - Flores said once a dealer receives a Bolt EV or EUV made after April 4, they can sell those vehicles immediately. Recalled vehicles on dealer lots are on stop-sale and will need to have their battery modules replaced before they can be sold. - Orion will build the electric versions of the light-duty 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups alongside the Bolts when the expansion is complete late next year. As standard it has 617 horsepower and 701 pound-feet (950 Nm), but you can have that increased to 677 horsepower and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. - With the pack, the EQE 53's sprint time to 60 mph drops from 3.4 seconds to 3.2 seconds and top speed is upped from 137 mph to 149 mph. Powering all of this performance is a 90.6 kWh battery pack that is made up of ten modules totalling 360 pouch-type cells whose chemistry is less reliant on cobalt. - The EQE 53 can be charged at a maximum rate of 170 kW, and according to the manufacturer, this will add 112 miles (180 km) of range in 15 minutes. Its WLTP range (EPA numbers not yet available) is up to 518 km (321 miles). Original Source : https://www.evo.co.uk/polestar/202256/2024-polestar-5-details-emerge-british-engineering-base-established-for-porsche 2024 POLESTAR 5 WILL DEBUT THE BRAND'S FIRST IN-HOUSE EV PLATFORM | THE DRIVE - Polestar says the 5 will boast segment-leading handling, rigidity, and safety thanks to this new in-house chassis. Torsional rigidity is supposedly higher than a "traditional two-seat sports- or supercar" while the weight is apparently lower than that of smaller cars - What's more, a new manufacturing process lets the company build the Polestar 5's platform and body simultaneously, cutting down on the time it takes to get a car on the road. - Not only does this in-house platform enable the automaker to build the Polestar 5 quicker and have the car be stiffer and lighter, but it has also allowed the upcoming production EV to stick close to the Precept concept when it comes to aesthetics. Not a bad thing, given how good the Precept looks. - While the Polestar 5 sedan is set to debut for the 2024 model year, the South Carolina-built Polestar 3 crossover is going to launch sometime this year. Hyundai and Kia were No 1 and No 2 in terms of share gainers among members of ACEA, the European automakers association. - In some of the region's top markets the good news continued into 2022 as in the UK, where Kia was the best-selling brand in January. - It was fairly easy to overlook Korean automakers in Europe before EVs started to take off. - Hyundai, Kia and Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda and Nissan did not quite replicate the success they had appealing to buyers in the U.S. over recent decades. - Emilio Herrera, chief operating officer of Kia Europe, said early in the pandemic that Europe had become the focal point for its global EV sales growth. APPLE HIRES TESLA'S AUTOPILOT SOFTWARE DIRECTOR FOR CAR EFFORT - Apple Inc., bolstering its car-development efforts, hired a former engineer from Tesla Inc. who drew controversy this year for remarks about that company's Autopilot feature. - The iPhone maker tapped Christopher “CJ” Moore for its team working on a self-driving car, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Moore is working on the effort's software, reporting to Stuart Bowers, another former Tesla executive who joined Apple at the end of last year. Bowers had led Tesla's Autopilot team before departing in mid-2019. - At Tesla, Moore implied that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk had overstated the capabilities of the Autopilot software. Earlier this year, California Department of Motor Vehicles officials interviewed Moore as part of investigations into the self-driving software. The department asked Moore about Musk claiming that Teslas would be capable of fully autonomous driving this year. - Moore signaled in response that Musk's statements didn't “match engineering reality,” according to a DMV memo summarizing the conversation. Many are speculating that these are the new factory wraps that the automaker has been talking about. - Recently, Tesla has been teasing new colors that are enabled by its paint shop at its Gigafactory in Berlin. However, the company has been talking about another way to get new colors on the vehicles too - Tesla announced that it would be offering wraps in China on its Weibo account. While the company made the announcement last year, there has been no confirmed example of wraps from them. - For the first time, Tesla has been spotted manufacturing new vehicles out of its Gigafactory in Shanghai, and the colors are all new. The images were captured by a drone used by reporter Jason Yang. - Some of the colors include turquoise, pink, and light blue. Original Source : https://www.techtimes.com/articles/267670/20211107/tesla-producing-vehicles-new-colors-shanghai-factory.htm TESLA'S LATEST PATCH HINTS AT CLOUD-SYNCED DRIVER PROFILES - Tesla is preparing for a world where your driver profile can follow you across different cars, be it your personal EV or a rental. The car maker has added a Cloud Profiles section in its latest software release, which points to an "Enable Vehicle Sync" option for backing up driver profiles - cloud profiles could also make it easier to synchronize settings across multiple vehicles. According to Tesla Software Updates, synced settings include your display brightness, Autopilot and navigation options. It'd also be helpful to have your Stopping Mode synchronized, as that seriously changes how Tesla's braking functions. Original Source : https://www.engadget.com/tesla-driver-cloud-sync-update-211525117.html TESLA TO OPEN NEW BATTERY MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT FACTORY IN CANADA - Tesla confirmed that it is going to open a new factory to build battery manufacturing equipment in Canada. - The mayor wrote in the announcement about the new manufacturing facility: I'm delighted to share that Tesla Canada is joining our already robust automotive and technology ecosystem by locating a manufacturing facility in the City of Markham. The facility will be the first branded Tesla Canada manufacturing facility in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used at the Gigafactories located around the world in the production of batteries. - In 2019, Tesla acquired Ontario-based Hibar Systems, a manufacturing equipment company that makes machines used in battery cell production. Before Tesla took over, the company was based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, which is only a few minutes from Markham, where the new facility is going to be. It sounds like Tesla might be expanding the team into a bigger facility in the next town over in the suburbs of Toronto. The new three-week production halt will start Nov. 15. - GM said Friday that "battery module replacements remain the priority. We will continue to adjust Orion's production schedule moving forward to best support the recall." It boasts a top speed of 98 mph and a range of 68-89 miles, depending on riding style. The proprietary Z-Force 75-5 powerplant cranks out 46 hp and 78 lb-ft of torque. All of this is plenty to make the S a capable commuter and street bike, and the fuel savings should soften the $11,195 price tag. - Get Off The Road: Zero DS For about another $2500 you can add dual-sport drive and move up to the DS model. You'll get the same motor as the S, but the added grip (and added fun) two-wheel drive provides will cost you a few miles in range. - The Dual-Sport Monster: Zero DSR - For $15,695 you can bring home a Zero DSR and its Z-Force 75-7 motor, providing a whopping 70 hp and 102 mph top speed. The DSR also includes a mammoth 16.5 kWh battery (nearly twice the size of that in the S and DS), giving the the newest model a Tesla-like 163-mile range under mixed driving conditions. In both cases, the usable battery capacity is 107.8 kWh (the total value is not disclosed by the manufacturer). - Overall, the efficiency is very good, but not as good as in the Lucid Air or Tesla Model S. At least that's what Charlie Min from Asian Petrolhead says after having a go in the range-topping GV60 AWD Performance Model that features a total of 360 kW (483 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque from a dual-motor powertrain connected to a 77.4 kWh battery—the only one available in the Genesis EV. - GV60's Boost Mode, which is only available for 10 seconds at a time. Even so, the Genesis doesn't match the Kia EV6 GT's 430 kW Original Source : https://insideevs.com/features/545850/genesis-gv60-first-drive-reviews/ LARRY DAVID'S CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM AUDI E-TRON SPORTBACK - Seinfeld co-creator Larry David loves driving eco-friendly cars on Curb Your Enthusiasm, the popular HBO comedy series that is now in its eleventh season. Unlike Seinfeld, Curb isn't a typical sitcom, but more of an improvisational cinema verité-like comedy that follows Larry in his life as a somewhat retired yet very successful writer and producer - Initially, he drove a Lexus GS 400, which he traded in for a first-generation Toyota Prius in season 2 of the show. Larry then drives newer versions of the popular Toyota-badged hybrid in following seasons, before making the switch to a BMW i3 for seasons 9 and 10. Now, with season 11 officially underway, it seems Larry has abandoned BMW in favor of rival Audi, as he can be seen driving the new e-tron Sportback crossover, which is of course fully electric. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 30th September. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW IX FIRST DRIVE REVIEW "The 2022 iX is one of two new BMW EVs coming to the US next year. But while the upcoming i4 is pretty much just a 4 Series Gran Coupe with an electric powertrain, the iX is a clean-sheet design from the ground up. It's unlike anything else in BMW's current portfolio." says Roadshow: "It all starts with a composite spaceframe made of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics, aluminum and high-strength steel. Sound familiar? This is the same framework BMW used when building the i3 hatchback and i8 coupe, and just like those cars, the iX's body structure is as light as it is strong. It's hard to get a sense of how big the iX is, especially in photos. At 195.0 inches long, 77.4 inches wide and 66.7 inches tall, the iX is about the size of a BMW X5 SUV, just a little shorter in height. In the US, the iX will come standard with 20-inch wheels, and a range of 21- and 22-inch options will be available." Read more: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2022-bmw-ix-first-drive-review/ "Having a dedicated electric vehicle platform means a few things. Firstly, it's lighter than converting a traditional architecture over for an electric vehicle. The structural points and package requirements are designed specifically for a battery pack in the floor, electric motors at each axle, and the lack of traditional powertrain equipment. So there's no waste in the chassis." points out BMW Blog: "For instance, the completely flat rear trunk floor in the iX is only possible because it doesn't have a traditional transmission tunnel to work around. The battery can be stored completely flat underneath the floor with no obstructions. Therefore, the battery is packaged better and rear passengers have far more foot room. Also, because the rear subframes and suspension were designed for an electric motor, the entire eDrive unit can be stored under the rear trunk floor with no intrusion into cargo space." Read more: https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/09/28/2022-bmw-ix-xdrive50-test-drive/ "The high-voltage battery pack has made similar gains in terms of increased energy density—about 40 percent compared to the battery in the outgoing i3. BMW sources the prismatic cells from CATL and Samsung SDI, but the rest is done in-house in a new battery facility at its Dingolfing factory. The iX xDrive50 uses a 106.3 kWh pack (useable; gross capacity is 111.5 kWh) comprising six modules of 50 cells each and another five modules each with 40 cells." according to Ars Technica: "Since leaving the factory 1,235 miles (1,987 km) ago, the iX I was testing averaged 2.8 miles/kWh (22.1 kWh/100 km), which includes time running flat-out on derestricted German Autobahns at 124 mph (200 km/h). the iX can DC fast-charge at up to 195 kW, taking 40 minutes or less to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent. AC charging maxes out at 11 kW on single-phase electricity" Read more: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/09/forget-the-looks-love-the-tech-the-83200-bmw-ix-electric-suv " It makes 516 horsepower, does 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, and offers a range of about 300 miles (not official just yet in the U.S., but that's the estimate, and fits with what I saw in use). That front hood, by the way, is weird. Normally, all you can open in the front is the BMW badge, which gives access to the washer fluid reservoir and a bit of cargo room, provided your cargo is one solitary meatball wrapped in a napkin. The hood itself can be opened, but it's a bit of a chore involving two separate latches, and there are no stays or even one of those hinged sticks to hold the hood open; this is clearly a no user-serviceable parts inside kind of deal." writes Jason at Jalopnik: "On the autobahn, at speeds of 130 to 140 mph, the iX is a speedy, silent mobile room. The wheels have been designed to be especially aerodynamic and quiet, and as a result there's pretty minimal road noise. To keep things from being too masoleum-quiet, there's artificial sounds that get played, and they're actually and maybe a little surprisingly good. BMW got musician Hans Zimmer to come up with a bunch of EV sounds, and I found that they provided valuable feedback about throttle position and enhanced the overall experience without seeming forced or too artificial. It's well-executed." The awd variant, meanwhile, gets two motors. The rear-wheel motor will deliver 160 kW while the front achieves 74 kW, for a total system output of 234 kW. Finally, a third variant called the Performance Model will be all-wheel drive and achieve output of 320 kW in Sports Mode and top out at 360 kW in Boost Mod. All versions of the GV60 will get a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery" Battery pre-conditioning 800v Due first half of 2022 Read more: https://www.autonews.com/cars-concepts/genesis-first-dedicated-ev-gv60-gets-boost-mode-0-62-mph-4-seconds FORD MUSTANG MACH-E GETS MORE USABLE BATTERY AND RANGE FOR 2022 "The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E will have some notable changes for the new model year, and we know when production starts thanks to a member from the Mach-E Forum who posted the electric SUV's 2022 order guide." according to InsideEVs; "The biggest change for the electric Ford is the amount of usable battery capacity offered in both Standard Range and Extended Range models. The usable battery capacity in the SR battery pack is now 70 kWh (up from 68 kWh) and 91 kWh in the ER battery pack (up from 88 kWh). The California Route 1 model will be available with all-wheel drive and will come standard with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel for 2022." An important part of NIO users' car-owning experience is the holistic charging and swapping system. The latter enables NIO vehicle's batteries to be automatically swapped in three minutes. Norwegian national authorities have already approved the country's first Power Swap station, which will be located in Lier, approximately 30 kilometres south of Oslo. Today, NIO announces an ambition to set up 20 Power Swap stations in Norway by the end of 2022. The plan is to locate Power Swap stations in many of Norway's main cities and along the busiest transport routes. All Power Swap stations are subject to regulatory approvals including planning and building permission from relevant local councils. NIO will also offer Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) to Norwegian users who purchase an electric vehicle from NIO. NIO users who purchase a NIO ES8 Signature Edition 100 kWh together with a BaaS subscription will be able to benefit from six battery swaps including service fee per month with an additional cost from NOK 1,999 per month. NIO HAS COMPLETED 4 MILLION BATTERY SWAPS "By September 29, China's new energy vehicle startup NIO has a total of 504 battery swapping stations, one quarter ahead of its target to reach 500 by the end of 2020. Besides, the company has completed more than 4 million battery swaps by September 29, about 30 swaps per user. The highest number of battery swaps for a single vehicle is 927. NIO aims to have a total of 700 battery swapping stations before the Chinese New Year Holiday in 2022." reports Gasgoo. ABB says it's the world's most powerful EV charger, delivering charging rates up to 360 kW" says FutureCar: "The Terra 360 is a modular charger which can simultaneously charge up to four vehicles at once and is built with dynamic power distribution. This setup means that drivers will not have to wait if somebody else is already charging ahead of them. They simply pull up to another open plug. The powerful charger will be first available in Europe by the end of the year. ABB plans to expand the Terra 360 to the U.S., Latin America and Asia Pacific regions sometime in 2022." VOLKSWAGEN GOLF "The ID.3, in the eyes of many, is basically intended to replace the Golf — over time. The question I and many others have is: how long will it take for that happen? That depends on many factors, but two of the bigger ones are 1) the ID.3 becoming considerably cheaper than the Golf (in terms of cost of ownership initially, and then upfront cost), 2) people becoming aware of that." says Zachary at CleanTechnica: "This first comparison includes an assumption that you drive 20,000 kilometers a year on average and the price of petrol is €2 per liter on average over the course of the 5 years." 5 Yr TCO, including predicted resale value after 5 years VW ID.3 Pro Performance: 24,696 Euros VW Golf: 30,440 (but super slow) https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/15/volkswagen-id-3-vs-volkswagen-golf-5-year-cost-of-ownership-comparisons/ TESLA LANDS ANOTHER TAX BREAK TO LOCATE CYBERTRUCK FACTORY IN TEXAS "Lawmakers in Texas just gave Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk another incentive to locate its next factory there. Commissioners in Travis County, home to Austin and the possible next Tesla factory, approved Tuesday property tax breaks worth at least $14.7 million — and potentially more — over 10 years. The incentives are on top of $46.6 million in property tax abatement that the Del Valle School District Board approved earlier this month." says TechCrunch: "The agreement, which the Austin Statesman first reported, is the latest carrot dangled in front of Tesla in hopes of landing the automaker’s next factory, which is slated to assemble the all-electric Cybertruck and the Model Y for the East Coast market." https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/14/tesla-lands-another-tax-break-to-locate-cybertruck-factory-in-texas/ TWITTER SAYS 'SOCIAL ENGINEERING ATTACK' LED TO MUSK'S, OTHERS' SCAM TWEETS And from Engadget: "In its first detailed statements since someone took over a number of high profile accounts Wednesday afternoon, Twitter posted a thread explaining “what we know so far.” While rumors have swirled about what may have caused a compromise that gave hackers access to Twitter accounts for Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Apple, Kanye West and others, the company stated, “We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.”" "We know they used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf. Show #500 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. For show 500 I welcome two new Patreon supporters. New PRODUCER BILL CLISHAM and new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ROB HERMANS. "I’ve been listening to your excellent podcast for a few months and it’s better than sliced bread! I’ve learned SO much and really feel in touch with all of the most recent developments in EV land, thanks to you. With your 500th episode coming up, I have decided to become a patron and help you keep up this amazing effort. More power (clean, electric power!) to you, my friend!" My weekend watch recommendation is Bjorn Nyland taking his Model 3 Performance on the German Autobahn at 233kmh. RHD TESLA MODEL 3'S ARRIVE IN UK From R Symons: "Trucks now heading from Dover to London with the first RHD’s for delivery next week. Next Thursday 20/06/19 is D day for my model 3 performance! First UK batch must have been on Grand Dahlia." The white option for interior is back in the design studio. And finally the least important part of the show...the Supercharger Route Planner still only gives you option to plan a route for a Model S or X. ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE SAVED 3.6 BILLION LITRES OF FUEL IN THE US The transition to electric vehicles has saved 3.6 billion litres of fuel in the US, with a third of that saved in 2018 alone, new figures from the US Department of Energy have shown." reports Bridie for driven.io: "With more than 1.2 million light plug-in (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) now sold in the US alone, amounting to 25 billion miles (40 billion kilometres) driven by PHEVs and BEVs since 2010, fuel consumption by light vehicles has been reduced by 0.23 per cent, the report says. Electric vehicles are still more efficient, even when powered by coal-sourced electricity. But even so, the source of that electricity may bear consideration. In California, 40 per cent of electricity generation is consumed by the transport sector, according to the EIA using data from 2017 – making it the biggest consumer of electricity." https://thedriven.io/2019/06/14/electric-vehicles-have-saved-3-6-billion-litres-of-fuel-in-the-us/ PORSCHE TAYCAN SPIED DURING TIRE-SCREECHING TEST AT THE 'RING More video online of the Porsche Taycan: "Confirmed for a September reveal, the company’s very first EV has been caught for the umpteenth time at the Nürburgring flaunting those hilarious “exhausts” to prove the Germans do have a sense of humor." writes Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "You might be tempted to say the zero-emissions sedan was not wearing any camouflage, but as it approaches a roundabout at the 1:11 mark, we can see it had quite a lot of black tape on the body and also stickers masking the lights. Later in the video, around the 4:15 mark, the prototype is seen in traffic passing by a gas station to reveal its deceiving body-colored camouflage also used by other future members of the Volkswagen Group family." https://www.motor1.com/news/354516/porsche-taycan-spy-video-nurburgring/ FCA SIGNS PARTNERSHIPS WITH ENEL X AND ENGIE GROUP Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has signed two agreements for new e-Mobility solutions to support the production and distribution of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full-electric (BEV) models rolling out as part of the Group’s 2018-2022 business plan. Through these agreements, FCA dealers will be able to offer innovative charging solutions and services to retail and business customers. This initiative also includes research and testing of new technologies to reduce the total cost of ownership of electrified vehicles. Mike Manley, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said: “These partnerships build on the e-mobility strategy we announced last year as part of our five-year business plan We are assembling an eco-system of partners, products and services across multiple markets to meet and exceed the rapidly evolving expectations of our customers for electrified vehicles.” The primary objective of the two partnerships is to offer private and public charging solutions to support sales of FCA’s forthcoming electric vehicle line-up including the soon-to-be-launched Fiat 5oo BEV and Jeep Renegade PHEV. . This includes offering customers the option of installing a home charging point (or “wallbox”) suited to their specific requirements, including charging optimization and smart management. Each partner will support FCA customers with the preliminary feasibility assessment and installation of the wallbox, as well as ongoing management and maintenance throughout the life of the customer vehicle and wallbox. In addition to home charging points, customers will also be offered cost-efficient and convenient access to public charging solutions. FCA and its partners will collaborate on the development of apps that will enable customers to locate public charging points, as well as book and pay for charging services via their vehicle’s integrated connectivity capability. 2019 JAGUAR I-PACE EV400 HSE REVIEW Brandon Turkus at Motor1 has driven the Jaguar I-PACE and written his review: "With 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque, the I-Pace’s twin electric motors sit neatly between the E-Tron (355 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque, boosted to 402 hp and 490 lb-ft in Boost Mode) and EQC (402 hp and 561 lb-ft). And yet, the Jag is quicker than both its German rivals, taking just 4.5 seconds to hit 60 compared to 5.5 in the Audi and 4.8 in the EQC. The way the Jag gets to that speed, though, is very similar to the Germans. This is an electric car, and its two motors dole out torque-rich performance in big, immediately available lumps. Part of that is down to the single-speed automatic transmission. It’s quick to engage, so there’s hardly any waiting while the torque gets to the ground. But the I-Pace’s handling differs from its rivals. This is a charming dance partner, tipping the scales at a light (for the segment) 4,784 pounds. Its lower center of gravity – the I-Pace is only 61.3 inches tall, over two inches lower than the next closest rival, the 63.9-inch EQC – and more aggressive air suspension deliver a sharper, flatter handling character. You want to toss the I-Pace around and have some fun with it; take advantage of the quick steering and the darty way it can change directions. It’s quite a change of pace from taller, heavier rivals that focus on ride comfort." https://www.motor1.com/reviews/354870/2019-jaguar-i-pace-ev400-hse-review/ VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R RETURNS TO GOODWOOD WITH SPECIAL SPRINT VERSION "Volkswagen announced the return of the I.D. R to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (4 to 7 July) to defend its record EV time of 43.86 seconds from 2018." says InsideEVs.com: "While a year ago the German manufacturer simply used the same technical configuration as at the much longer and more demanding Pikes Peak hill climb, this year Volkswagen developed a special sprint version of the I.D. R. It will be equipped with smaller and lighter, high-power battery pack just for the 1.86-kilometer route, which gives hope to not only improve the record but maybe set an all-time record for the track (41.6 by Nick Heidfeld in McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car in 1999)." https://insideevs.com/news/354805/volkswagen-id-r-returns-goodwood-sprint-version/ FUEL CELL FERRY WATER GO ROUND FINDS FLEET INVESTMENT "The hydrogen ferry Water Go Round currently under construction in the US has found new funding for setting up an entire fleet. SW/TCH Maritime, an investment platform for all kinds of electric maritime vessels is now on board." says electrive.com: "A first unit of the 84-passenger ferry powered by fuel cells is currently under construction at the Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in California and set for completion this September. The next step will be a three-month trial in the San Francisco Bay, also to act as a flagship for SW/TCH’s future fleet. The tanks will hold up to 264 kg of hydrogen, which is enough to run the ferry for two days straight, according to the manufacturers. For refilling the tanks, SW/TCH is partnering with Clean Marine Energy (CME) to develop electric charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure onshore." https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/13/fuel-cell-ferry-water-go-round-finds-fleet-investment/ TESLA IS DELIVERING 1,000 CARS A DAY EN ROUTE TO RECORD QUARTER "Electrek has learned that Tesla is currently delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day. As we reported earlier this month, Tesla aims to deliver between 33,000 and 36,000 vehicles in June in North America to break its delivery record." says Fred Lambert: "According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla has been delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day in North America so far this month. Furthermore, there are almost 7,000 more deliveries planned over the next 7 days and even more last-minute deliveries are expected over the last week of the quarter as buyers try to get deliveries before the now $3,750 federal tax credit on Tesla vehicles goes down again. It’s important to keep in mind that even if Tesla doesn’t achieve this record, they are still delivering all-electric vehicles at a higher pace than any other automaker at this point. By a huge margin. In North America, Tesla is delivering more EVs in 3 days than GM is delivering in a whole month." https://electrek.co/2019/06/14/tesla-delivering-1000-cars-day-record-quarter/ HYUNDAI KONA EV #1 IN NETHERLANDS IN MAY "The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive month in May, with 2,688 plug-in vehicle registrations — up 193% year over year (YoY). That translated into a PEV share of 7.3% on the broader auto market. The year-to-date (YTD) count is now up to 15,537 units, with the 2019 PEV share at 8.3%, well above the 6% of last year." reports CleanTechnica: "If we only consider fully electric vehicles (BEVs), the EV share last month was 6.3%, with the 2019 share being 7%. A bit surprisingly, the VW e-Golf was 4th, with 227 units, a meritable performance for a model that is less than a year from being replaced by the much more competitive VW ID.3. I guess name recognition is a strong point here." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/14/hyundai-kona-ev-1-in-netherlands-in-may-tesla-model-3-still-1-in-2019/ RIVIAN'S USED BATTERIES WILL HELP SUPPORT "Now, we have an idea of what Rivian wants to do with its batteries once they're no longer usable in its vehicles." says Roadshow by CNET: "Rivian announced this week that it has teamed up with the Honnold Foundation, which funds solar power initiatives, for a future project that will use Rivian's "second-life" batteries, also known as a used EV battery that's already done its time in an electric vehicle. The project will see these batteries as gateways to energy independence and renewable power generation, and it'll kick off in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Using the 135-kilowatt-hour battery packs from its development vehicles, Rivian will take these batteries and move them into small modules that can collect power from solar panels or other sources, reducing reliance on the grid." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-used-batteries-energy-independence-project/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube… Should EVs still qualify for special treatment and incentives – financial, convenience (ie driving in bus lanes) etc I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 220 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Finally, Asad wraps up the show with a second opinion on Resident Evil 7: Biohazard from the perspective of a noted disturbed person.
The Tangent - 102: Batman Nipples It's a snow day here at The Tangent, but that won't stop us talking about game. Or the fact that there is no wrong Ninja Turtle to choose. Unless it's anyone besides Leonardo. Justin leads off with Dishonored 2 again this week. He's on his 2 and a half play through, and with no powers. He finds the level design even more impressive playing this way. Borrowing a copy of Resident Evil 7 gave him the chance to play the game and to find that it's scaring the hell out of him. Constantly having his back against the wall. Gary then fills us in with some Overwatch information. Something about 'PTR'. No idea... But he has a 'Gary Bedtime Game™', Chameleon Run. It's sort of an 2-D endless runner where you have to match the color of the floor by switching the clothes color of your character. Nioh is a game made by Team Ninja that may be a better game that Dark Souls. Well, at least Anthony and Gary try to figure that one out. But the game is being compared to Dark Souls, for sure. Speaking of Anthony he's also got some follow up to Fire Emblem Heroes. It's a much similar version of the game. So, if any game is going to get you into the series, this should it. Finally, Brian talks a bit more about Owlboy. Four hours in and he is still impressed with the art style. While the puzzles seem to be getting easier he is still having fun. Then comes Papers Please. A simulation game that has you acting as border patrol and deciding who gets to come into the country. Brian was pretty fascinated by it. Just watch out for the Charlie Brown voices. The news this week is short, but we talk about not being able to 100A% Breath of the Wild, Nintendo embracing the Unreal Engine, PS4 Pro's boost mode, South Park: The Fractured But Whole delayed again, and more! The Drunken Show Notes: Aonuma: 100 percent completion in Breath of the Wild is “impossible” Spoilers: Breath of the Wild bird race and more named, causes timeline implications Psychonauts 2 Signed By Payday 2 Publisher, Release Window Confirmed Nintendo's engineers have embraced Unreal Engine Analysis: PS4 Pro’s “Boost Mode” bumps frame rates up to 38 percent South Park: The Fractured But Whole Delayed Again Extras Creep us on Facebook Stalk us on Twitter Watch us on YouTube Or throw us that review on iTunes or Stitcher Questions, comments, concerns?
