Read OnlineWhen the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Luke 2:22–24Forty days after a firstborn male was born, the law of Moses required that the mother participate in a purification ritual and that the parents were to “redeem” the child by offering a ritual sacrifice. As faithful Jews, Mary and Joseph took these obligations seriously. When they entered the Temple, they were met by a holy man named Simeon, who was among the faithful Jews “awaiting the consolation of Israel.”From its founding, the Kingdom of Israel had endured many troubled times. The last time the Kingdom of Israel had been united was under the reign of King David and his son Solomon in the tenth century B.C. After Solomon's death, the kingdom split into the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The Northern Kingdom was captured by the Assyrians in 722 B.C., and the Southern Kingdom was conquered by the Babylonians in 586 B.C., leading to the destruction of the First Temple and the exile of many Jews to Babylon for about seventy years. In the centuries that followed, Greek culture was imposed upon the region after the conquest of Alexander the Great, and the Romans finally captured Judah in 63 BC, maintaining control beyond the birth of Christ.This history of oppression and division created various responses among the Jewish people. Many prophets had foretold the coming of the Messiah, the one who would bring consolation to Israel. Some Jews expected the Messiah to be a political leader who would reunite and restore the Kingdom. Others were indifferent to the prophecies. But a faithful remnant, like Simeon, awaited the Messiah who would bring about a profound spiritual renewal.Simeon was not a Pharisee, Sadducee, or scribe, but an ordinary devout Jew filled with the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit Who revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Messiah. On the day Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, Simeon, inspired by the Holy Spirit, came to the Temple and recognized the Christ Child. He took Jesus in his arms and rejoiced, saying, “Lord, now let your servant go in peace; your word has been fulfilled…”We should all strive to be like Simeon. Like the people of Israel and Judah, we are living in a world where God's Kingdom is often divided or overshadowed by immorality, wars, divisions, and a lack of faith. We might be tempted to address these challenges in various ways, but the best way is to become part of the faithful remnant who, like Simeon, trust in God's promises and eagerly anticipate His transforming action in our lives and in the world. Reflect today on the state of the world. In some places, the Kingdom of God is vibrant and alive; in others, it seems distant or absent. No matter where you find yourself, turn your gaze to the all-powerful Messiah, Who is capable of renewing His Kingdom on Earth as we await its fullness at the end of time. Devote yourself to His mission, and allow the Holy Spirit to inspire you to be an active participant in bringing about the reign of God. My Lord and Messiah, as I see the challenges and divisions in the world around me, help me to trust in Your promises. May I, like Simeon, be filled with faith and hope as I await Your Kingdom. Inspire me to be an instrument of Your grace, helping to build Your Kingdom here on Earth. Tony explains the difficulty for many people to find this level of "stillness" or emptiness in their experience. It is mainly because we are trying too hard and several examples will demonstrate this. It does take practice as we have been conditioned to do and look at life as a checklist of things to do rather than just be who you are. A bird known as Titanis walleri made its home in Florida just a few million years ago. Titanis, as its name suggests, was titanic indeed — a flightless predator, 5 feet tall, with a massive hooked bill. Titanis and other birds related to it belong to a group some paleontologists call the "terror birds." They were dominant land predators in South America for tens of millions of years. Paleontologists still aren't clear about why Titanis and its kin went extinct. Bizarre News - December 2025 | Paranormal Podcast In this December edition of Bizarre News, we kick things off with a terrifying close-to-home story from Canton, Ohio, where an off-duty police officer working security at a Walmart experienced what could have been a fatal encounter. While booking shoplifter Shane Newton and his female accomplice in the back of the store, the officer performed only a partial pat-down before turning to radio the station—that's when Newton pulled out a concealed pistol and raised it to fire. In what can only be described as divine intervention, the gun jammed at the critical moment, giving the officer just enough time to deliver a flying knee strike that broke Newman's rib and allowed him to wrestle the weapon away. We also dive into psychic Uri Geller's bold claims about the interstellar comet 3I Atlas, which he insists is actually an alien spacecraft carrying extraterrestrial beings who have peaceful intentions for humanity. Geller even reveals his own alleged encounter from 50 years ago when he claims he was shown frozen alien bodies by Werner von Braun deep beneath NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, connecting his past experience to current cosmic events. Our bizarre journey continues with the disturbing case of Cedric Lodge, a former Harvard Medical School morgue manager who was sentenced to eight years in prison for running a dark web body parts trafficking operation. Between 2018 and 2020, Lodge sold human brains, skin, hands, and even complete faces as if they were baubles or trinkets, with one horrifying example involving skin being tanned into leather to bind a book. This month we were delighted to be joined by Tom Royer who is a Visiting Researcher at the Arctic Centre and a Doctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Law at University of Lapland. Tom's work revolves around commercial space ports in the arctic from a more-than-human perspective. This work combines critical legal studies, multispecies justice, and extractivism. These space ports are hubs where commercial spacecraft are stored, worked on, launched, and re-entered (sometimes whole, sometimes not). The Arctic is not a new venue for commercial space activities, with some ports having a more than 50-year history. This is partially because satellites orbiting the poles can circle the globe in a single day. Tom opens a whole world to us in relation to commercial space ports and gives us a lot of food for thought in terms of impacts of these operations. Tom would like to make sure listeners are aware that everything he says during the episode is his own critical interpretations rather than simple factual statements. A gentle fancy for the Christmas Season—an oft-told tale with a wistful twistful of Something that left the Earth with a wing and a prayer.   Earlier today, I had the stark realization that at the core of many Christmas stories is a core of sorrow or longing that must somehow be transformed into joy. Scrouge must learn charity. Ralphie longs for a bb gun and is betrayed by his joy. George is on the brink of suicide when his Guardian Angel intercedes. John McClane just needs to keep his wife alive (yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie). Over and over, the holiday spirit can only enter on the wings of struggle.    This realization came to me as I looked for an old school (aka public domain) science fiction story to narrate for tomorrow's episode of 365 Days of Astronomy. The first story I came across (which I'll personally share tomorrow), was Arthur C Clarke's, "The Star" and it was too dark for that family-friendly podcast. Instead, I read "Second Landing," by Floyd Wallace. Wallace, this story is weirdly timeless and felt utterly necessary for this moment. Aliens learn of Earth from our broadcasts, and they fear we are on the verge of destroying ourselves with the bomb. A look at the evening sky is a nice way to wrap up your Christmas. It features the Moon, two bright planets, and some of the brighter stars in all the night sky. As twilight drains from the sky, the Moon is well up in the southwest. The Sun lights up more than a quarter of the lunar hemisphere that faces our way, so it’s a fat crescent. It’s waxing toward first quarter, on Saturday. The planet Saturn is to the upper left of the Moon, and looks like a bright star. It shines so brightly for a couple of reasons: It’s the second-largest planet in the solar system – more than nine times the diameter of Earth – and it’s topped by clouds that reflect much of the sunlight that strikes them. The only planet that’s bigger than Saturn is Jupiter, and it climbs into good view, in the east-northeast, by 7 or 7:30. In all the night sky right now, only the Moon outshines it. The “twin” stars of Gemini – Pollux and Castor – stand to Jupiter’s left and upper left. At the same time, the brilliant constellation Orion is off to the upper right of Jupiter. Look for its three-star belt aiming straight up from the horizon, flanked by orange Betelgeuse and blue-white Rigel. Taurus perches well above Orion. It’s marked by its bright orange eye, Aldebaran. And the Dog Star, Sirius, climbs into good view by 8 or 8:30, below Orion’s Belt. It’s the brightest true star in the night sky – a beautiful decoration for Christmas night.
