linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Catching Up On Cinema is joined by Kyle's brother Nik to review John Milius', Conan the Barbarian (1982)! Based on the popular pulp fiction character created by author Robert E. Howard, the film is a violent, mythic tale of swords and sorcery. Hot on the heels of his star making turn in the documentary, Pumping Iron (1977), the film serves as one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's earliest starring roles. Financially back by powerhouse producers Dino De Laurentiis and Edward R. Pressman, written by Oliver Stone, and directed by Hollywood wild man, John Milius, the film is a massive and thoughtfully conceived experience, confident in it's intent and tone. Brandishing production design by Alien (1979) designer Ron Cobb, and a magnificent, operatic score composed by Basil Poledouris, the film dazzles the eyes and ears during it's numerous, wordless interludes. Packed with talent on the screen and behind the scenes, the film is a near timeless adventure epic that has was massively successful at it's time of release, and has since gone on to be remembered as one of Schwarzenegger's better films. July 3rd, 1985 - a day that a little time travel movie produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Robert Zemeckis called Back to the Future was released to the public. This podcast will dive into the world of BTTF, and discuss the movies, characters, and behind-the-scenes details on one of the greatest trilogies of all time. So buckle in, make sure your flux capacitor is fluxing, and enjoy the 88 mile per hour adventure of the Back to the Future trilogy. In 1985 film director Robert Zemeckis introduced the world to a time machine built out of a DeLorean sports car in the film Back to the Future. While Back to the Future was a blockbuster success, the film itself almost never got made. It is hard to think of a world without Doc Brown and Marty McFly having adventures through time but that is the world we almost lived in. Back to the Future is a testament to the creative collaborative process. Each failure, false start, and change all aligned for the film's eventual success. One of the most popular icons to come out of the Back to the Future film series was the time machine itself. Where did this time machine come from? How does one go about creating a fictional time machine that film audiences would believe could actually travel though time? The creation of the time machine starts with the filmmakers themselves. This is the story about how director Zemeckis was able to bring to life a time machine “with some style!” With numerous interviews and research this book details the creation of all the time machines used in the film series and beyond including the 2020 musical. Learn about how the time machine started out as a time chamber, and how a marketing executive wanted Doc Brown to drive a Ford Mustang. Explore how ILM created a flying DeLorean and how in the third movie they put a DeLorean on railroad tracks. Even the time traveling "Jules Verne" train's creation is explored. Find out what happened to these time machines after filming, some were left to the elements and were nearly "erased from existence."Full interviews with: Ron Cobb, Andrew Probert, , Kevin Pike, Gene Winfield, Michael Lantieri, John Bell, Tim Flattery, Lawrence G. Paull, Michael Fink.Numerous never before published photos of the original time machines, with lots of behind-the-scenes from the famed ...The Ride. This edition is the black and white photo edition. It's been a long day, but we're finally at the peak. This episode covers the first two films in the Alien franchise - 'Alien', and 'Aliens'. Our drinking game rule this week is from the legendary Sam Hurley from Movie Reviews in 20 Q's. You can find Sam at https://mritqs.podbean.com/ Alien is a 1979 science-fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon. Based on a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, it follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo, who encounter the eponymous Alien, a deadly and aggressive extraterrestrial set loose on the ship. The film stars Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. It was produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler, and Walter Hill through their company Brandywine Productions, and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. Giler and Hill revised and made additions to the script; Shusett was executive producer. The Alien and its accompanying artifacts were designed by the Swiss artist H. R. Giger, while concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the more human settings. Aliens is a 1986 American science fiction action film written and directed by James Cameron, produced by Gale Anne Hurd and starring Sigourney Weaver. The second installment in the Alien franchise, it follows Ellen Ripley (Weaver) as she returns to the moon where her crew encountered the hostile Alien creature, this time accompanied by a unit of space marines. Additional roles are played by Carrie Henn, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, William Hope, Al Matthews, and Bill Paxton.

"O" is for Operation Lost Trust. Operation Lost Trust was arguably South Carolina's largest and longest-running political scandal. The key player in the FBI's investigation into legislative corruption was Ron Cobb, a lobbyist and former member of the S.C. House of Representatives. After being arrested by the FBI on a drug charge, he cooperated with them and told legislators he represented a group seeking support for legalizing dog- and horse-track betting in the state. He recruited two legislators to help him and they enticed legislators into the scheme by paying them money in exchange for their support and votes. The federal investigation resulted in the conviction of seventeen legislators, seven lobbyists, and three others for bribery, extortion, or drug use. Including the investigation, trials, and retrials, the Operation Lost Trust saga lasted nearly ten years.

In space... no one can hear anything but my annoying nasally voice yelling at my wife and best friend about how much I love Alien! Written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the film was O'Bannon's reintroduction to Hollywood after living in a think-tank on the ill-fated Jodorowsky's Dune. The time abroad served invaluable, as it introduced him to H.R. Giger and his hideously sexual brooding art that would take an admittedly lacking story and turn it into a classic with the help of director, Ridley Scott.  Hot off the moderate success of The Duelists, Scott decided to leave the Napoleonic era long in the past, delving into a gritty, industrial future.  Between Giger and O'Bannon (who did set design for Dark Star and Star Wars) the film has an unmistakable aesthetic, which was captured perfectly by Scott, much to the chagrin of some of his actors. For instance, Tom Skerritt, was openly critical of Scott taking so long to set up shots, because he fell out of character.  The film stars Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. Aside from a part in Madman (which you can see was later aggrandized after the success of Alien) Weaver was predominantly a theater actor. She would go on to make more than the budget of this entire film to appear in the sequel: Aliens. She would go on to star in four installments of this series, which has grossed over $1,000,000,000 in her lifetime.  Listen as we discuss the practical effects, such as the design of the Nostromo and the Space Jockey, and the ingenuity of using real animal parts in the facehugger's eggsack. Did you know that they used condoms in making the xenomorph? Well don't worry, because Jake mentions it like 10 times throughout this episode. We also discuss some of the deleted scenes and the infamous alternate ending that was luckily scrapped.  If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? A perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility." This week begins our journey into the Alien franchise, dear listeners, which ends with our discussion of Prometheus on June 15th. We start with the amazing beginning of it all, 1979's Alien. Ridley Scott and his team -- from the writers Dan O'Bannon, Ron Shusett, Walter Hill and David Giler, to the incredible production design of H.R. Giger, Ron Cobb and Michael Seymour, to Jerry Goldsmith's haunting and terrifying score, to the incredible performances led by Sigourney Weaver, to the amazing sound editing by Jim Shields, to the cinematography by Derek Vanlint -- took the science fiction and the horror genres and found a way to merge them in a way that redefined both those genres as well as many cinema conventions aftrward. It's a stunning film and one we're happy to talk about with you. Join us -- Pete Wright and Andy Nelson -- on this week's episode of Rash Pixel's "Movies We Like" as we discuss the origins of the story as well as the importance of bringing H.R. Giger on board. We chat about what this film did for its two genres (and we don't even mention how much it still influences sci fi and horror films to this day -- anyone remember who did the voice of Mother in WALL-E?). We cover the amazing cast and their roles in all of the pivotal scenes that stand out still to this day. We chat about the battles between Jerry Goldsmith and Ridley Scott over the score, and more. Listen in!
