The closure of San Francisco's immigration courts has had big ramifications. Today, we get an update on how immigrants are navigating an increasingly difficult system. Then, we roll out the royal carpet for the first king of BART prom. The prom held under the Rockridge tracks.

On May first, the Trump administration closed its main immigration court in San Francisco's Financial District. That follows months of clashes outside the building between ICE and local activists opposing the crackdown on immigrants. Those cases have now been moved to another Bay Area court in Concord. The move has resulted in "mega" immigration dockets, with dozens — and sometimes more than a hundred — cases to be decided per day. But that's only one of the problems that have resulted from the move. Clara-Sophia Daly is an immigration reporter with Mission Local. She's recently reported on the situation in Concord. She spoke with KALW's news editor Sunni Khalid about what she's found.

Brady describes police work as a process that frequently continues long after the most visible danger has passed. The public may see the rescue or initial arrest, but investigators must then reconstruct the crime in a way that will withstand scrutiny in court. Although Brady does not reveal every sensitive detail of the case, he emphasizes the importance of patience and coordination. “Complex cases are built one fact at a time,” he explains. “Investigators have to follow the evidence wherever it leads and avoid becoming locked into a theory too early.” Police also must consider whether the crime crosses jurisdictional boundaries. If a victim is transported across state lines or other circumstances bring the offense under federal jurisdiction, federal kidnapping statutes may apply. Under 18 U.S. Code § 1201, kidnapping can become a serious federal offense carrying severe penalties. California also has its own kidnapping laws and sentencing provisions. The precise charges depend on the facts, including whether a weapon was used, whether the victim suffered bodily harm, how the victim was moved or confined, and whether ransom, robbery, or another crime was involved. In the tennis club case, the violent assault, armed abduction, rescue, and eventual arrests illustrate why kidnapping investigations demand immediate action followed by methodical detective work. The case also demonstrates the emotional strain placed on victims. The physical rescue may occur within hours, but the psychological effects can last for years. When a Barricade Turned Deadly The kidnapping investigation was not the only critical incident Brady encountered during his law enforcement career. Earlier in his career, he tested for a police captain's position and was hired in Farmington, New Mexico. While serving there, he became involved in a dangerous call involving an armed, mentally disturbed man. The incident reportedly began when the man lost control and set his own residence on fire. As flames spread, the emergency became both a fire scene and an armed barricade. Police officers, firefighters, and tactical personnel faced an almost impossible situation. They had to contain the fire, protect neighboring residents, and attempt to prevent the armed man from harming himself or anyone else. Responders wanted to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion. According to Brady, officers considered using a fire hose to disable or disorient the man without using deadly force. It was an unusual strategy, but the circumstances were anything but ordinary. “They were searching for every reasonable option that might end the confrontation without someone dying,” Brady recalls. “The goal was to create an opportunity to take him into custody safely.” The plan changed when the suspect returned carrying a gun. At that moment, the threat was no longer theoretical. An armed man was confronting police during an active fire and barricade situation. A SWAT officer ultimately shot and killed him. Extraordinary Efforts to Avoid Deadly Force Officer-involved shootings are often judged through short video clips, incomplete reports, or information released before an investigation is finished. Brady's account shows how much may occur before an officer fires a weapon. Police had attempted to contain the suspect. They considered less-lethal and unconventional methods. They tried to create time and distance. Yet the suspect's return with a firearm forced officers to react to an immediate threat. This week on the Deadpod we head back to the Family Dog at the Great Highway in San Francisco for a superb show from August 3, 1969. This is the kind of set that reminds us just how quickly the Grateful Dead were evolving in that remarkable year, moving from the raw energy of their early material into the open-ended exploration that would define so much of what followed. The set opens with a fine run of songs including "Hard To Handle," "Beat It On Down The Line," "Hi-Heel Sneakers," "High Time," and "Mama Tried." From there the show opens up beautifully with a long and searching "Dark Star," followed by the powerful sequence of "Alligator," "Drums," "The Other One," and "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)," before closing with "And We Bid You Goodnight." There are two guest artists - an unknown sax player and David LaFlame from 'It's A Beautiful Day', and they add a rich extra dimension to the sound that I really dig.  There's a lot to enjoy here: the contrast between the concise song-based first half and the expanded improvisational stretch that follows, the relaxed confidence of the band, and the sense that they are really finding their collective voice in real time. It's a strong late-summer 1969 performance and a great listen for anyone who loves this transitional era of the Dead. What may be the greatest Dopey episode of all time: the unbelievable story of tattoo artist, punk-rock survivor, bank robber and Dopey legend Shane Enholm. Before the replay, Dave announces that DopeyCon is officially happening October 3, celebrates the publication of his kratom piece in Rolling Stone, and reads a listener's story about Bristol's open heroin market. Then Shane's story begins. Raised by an addicted mother, arrested alongside her at 12 and homeless as a teenager, Shane hitchhiked across America before finding punk rock in late-1970s Los Angeles. He crossed paths with Darby Crash and the Germs, became involved with Crash's former girlfriend Casey, developed a devastating heroin addiction and began robbing pharmacies. After entering adult prison at 18, Shane escaped a Synanon-style treatment program and returned to heroin, cocaine and crime. When Shane and Casey lost custody of their children, he robbed his first bank with a toy gun. Over the next six months, he became the FBI's “Ponytail Bandit,” robbing 29 banks—including one $36,000 score—while financing an enormous heroin habit. Shane describes robbing banks with his children in getaway cars, a dye pack exploding inside a taxi, his arrest in San Francisco and the eight years and 23 days he subsequently spent in federal prison. Inside, he developed another heroin habit, dealt drugs, swallowed and concealed balloons of heroin, and survived the violent racial politics of high-security federal institutions. After prison, Shane found his daughters living in horrific conditions, regained custody and slowly attempted to rebuild his life.
