Ever set a goal and thought, Can I actually do this? You plan, you prepare, but somewhere between the excitement and execution, that quiet self-doubt sneaks in. In this episode, I break down what self-efficacy really is—your belief in your ability to make things happen—and why so many high-achieving women struggle with it. I share with you the four biggest blocks to self-efficacy (from perfectionism to compassion fatigue) and why rebuilding belief in yourself isn't about working harder, it's about working with more self-trust. You'll also learn how something as simple as a goal planner can retrain your brain to expect small wins, track real progress, and recover from setbacks faster. If you've been feeling stuck or second-guessing yourself, this one's your reminder: confidence comes from action. Your planner isn't just a productivity tool. It's proof of your power. Through thoughtful questions from our community, we dive deep into the messy realities of modern life: workplace politics, purpose discovery, and parenting with intention.Drawing from years of experience with elite performers and leaders, we explore practical strategies for maintaining integrity in competitive environments while building the inner foundation that sustains long-term success and fulfillment.Key insights we explored:When workplace politics get messy - How to protect your team's expertise while staying true to your valuesPurpose doesn't need to be grand - Why "being a great parent" is just as meaningful as "wells in Africa"The three pillars of authentic purpose - It must matter to you, be bigger than you, and have future orientationBuilding self-efficacy in children - Let them figure things out, celebrate effort over outcomes, and create safety in their strugglesThe discovery model vs. formal instruction - Why guided discovery creates deeper, more resilient learningManaging the "hungry ghost" - How connection to something bigger than yourself dissolves achievement addictionSignal vs. noise in feedback - Treating both praise and criticism as noise while trusting your inner circleThis conversation reminds us that the most meaningful work often happens in the quiet moments—how we handle daily challenges, raise our children, and stay connected to what truly matters. The Eight Critical Success Factors No Entrepreneur Can Ignore with Daryl Urbanski

FiringTheMan

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2025 46:24 Transcription Available

What differentiates successful entrepreneurs from those who struggle or fail? According to Daryl Urbanski, it comes down to eight critical success factors he's identified after interviewing more than 600 high-performing business owners.Daryl's own path reads like a masterclass in entrepreneurial evolution. From humble beginnings shoveling Canadian driveways, he transformed into a business growth specialist who helped NeuroGym generate $1.6 million in just six months (which expanded to $7.5 million within three years). His approach has always been evidence-based - investing over $50,000 in research to identify the patterns that consistently produce results. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Daryl breaks down the difference between simply "doing the work" and actually "running a business." Many entrepreneurs fail to recognize that delivering a service is only one component of running a successful operation. As he explains: "When you go to McDonald's, they never say the drive-thru's closed because Sally's got a cold." This illuminates why some technically skilled professionals struggle to scale beyond their own capacity.Perhaps most valuable is Daryl's strategic blueprint for building a six-figure business in just 90 days. Rather than focusing on low-ticket, high-volume offerings, he advocates identifying high-value solutions you can genuinely deliver, proving the concept through pre-sales, and maximizing face-to-face interactions with potential clients. "It's easier to make income selling $10,000 items than $10 items," he notes, reminding us that the effort to make a sale often remains similar regardless of price point. The episode culminates with profound insight into what truly sets successful entrepreneurs apart - their relationship with time. Daryl maintains strict discipline around time management, scheduling his day in 30-minute blocks and eliminating distractions that most people consider normal. His recitation of Arnold Bennett's poem on the finite nature of our daily 24 hours serves as both inspiration and warning: "We shall never have any more time. We have, and we have always had, all the time there is."Ready to transform your business through automation and strategic growth? On this episode of Mind the Gap, Jon Hutchinson is joined by educator, researcher, and author Neil Gilbride to explore the powerful concept of self-efficacy—and why it matters now more than ever in schools. Drawing from his new book, Neil delves into the psychological foundations of self-efficacy, its relationship to agency, and the practical ways it can transform classroom practice. He shares insights from his own diverse career, from play schemes to academia, and explains how educators can help pupils—and themselves—navigate complexity, build resilience, and believe in their capacity to succeed. Together, Jon and Neil discuss Bandura's legacy, the critical importance of managing failure, and why effective modelling is about more than just showing how—it's about lending belief. “If we're not proactively thinking hard about using our capacity to share knowledge and ways of being and working,” Neil says, “then we're not using one of the most powerful weapons in our arsenal.” This episode offers a compelling and deeply human lens on what it means to teach, lead, and learn in today's education landscape.Dr Neil Gilbride CPSychol is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at University of Worcester and Associate Dean at Ambition Institute, one of the largest professional development providers in England. He has amassed 20 years of experience working across education as an academic, practitioner and knowledge mobiliser. Dr Neil Gilbride makes a compelling case for how Bandura's self efficacy theory can help refine how we understand and support our students AND how we design and teach our lessons. There are plenty of pedagogy ‘how tos' alongside reflections about our role in shaping how students feel about their ability to ‘do it' in our particular domain - be that maths, English or cake baking. Along the way Neil shares his views on the dangers of PowerPoint, the ultimate purpose of teaching - and who he'd invite (along with Bandura) to a pedagogical dinner party. Welcome to the new season of Musings. As you've likely noticed from the artwork, Musings is taking a new direction — we're broadening our horizons to consider the idea of "wellbeing" as a whole. What does it mean to be truly "well," physically, mentally, and emotionally?  In this first episode, Charlie Bresler swaps his host chair for the guest chair, and long-time friend and colleague Stacey Black is asking the questions.  Stacey and Charlie discuss the new direction for Musings — the idea of pursuing wellbeing as a whole — and how what Charlie has termed "effective hedonism" plays into his sense of wellness. Also self-confidence, self-efficacy, ideals, pleasure, and conscience all can have roles to play in our ultimate sense of wellbeing. Stacey and Charlie also discuss Charlie's new project, EH Walkers, and how it's a great example of marrying personal pleasure with your values to truly get the most wellbeing bang for your buck.  Musing on Wellbeing is sponsored by EH Walkers. A double definition of happiness — and how to cultivate both parts. The new year gives us an opportunity to reflect on who we are and who we want to be. As we set resolutions and prepare for evolutions, this special four-part series on communication, happiness, and well-being explores practical ways to enhance our lives through better communication, deeper connections, and more meaningful choices. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to happiness, but according to Laurie Santos, everyone needs the two key components of contentment and fulfillment — or as she puts it, being happy in your life and happy with your life.“Being happy in your life [means] your life is filled with joy,” explains Santos, a Yale psychology professor and host of The Happiness Lab podcast. This felt sense of happiness — enjoying where we are, what we do, and who we're with — is essential, but it's not the only piece of the puzzle. Being happy with your life, she says, is the belief that “your life is going well. Being happy with your life gets closer to things like fulfillment and purpose.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Santos joins Matt Abrahams to explore how to cultivate both sides of her happiness equation, from building deeper connections with others to transforming the ways we communicate with ourselves. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. And understanding the root cause has shown me that confidence is something you can learn, it's like any skill. And if there's one thing I love - it's learning skills. So i'm excited to break it down.+READING LISTI owe a huge amount to the writers & podcasters below whose work I researched for this episode!Mel Robbins on Confidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZn2Q4IU53kAmy Cuddy on Body Language: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks-_Mh1QhMcFor the original confidence-competence research: Stajkovic, A. How Can an Agile Coach Build Self-Efficacy of The Team? What is Self-efficacy? “Self-efficacy refers to an individual's confidence in their ability to complete a task or achieve a goal. This concept was originally developed by psychologist Albert Bandura” 1. One way is to create a blameless postmortem, rather than pointing fingers on each-other for the mistake which is already committed, explore all contributing factors to the incident, factors can be technical/non-technical, process failure or the human error, irrespective of who is in-charge of each of these activities, Agile coach can help the team to focusing on the issues and bring them back on track, let's say if the team is oversimplifying the root cause and if they are concluding that the issues is caused by a single factor or individual, then you have to step-in and pull them back.
