Certified nurse-midwife and labor nurse Roxanne explains what a TENS unit (transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulation) is, how it may reduce pain via gate control theory and endogenous opioid release, and why starting it earlier in labor may help more. She reviews evidence showing TENS can substantially reduce reported labor pain, allow mobility, and may shorten labor compared with epidurals, while avoiding common IV pain medication side effects like nausea and drowsiness. She also covers use in pregnancy for musculoskeletal pain (avoid abdomen and neck), and postpartum use including on the belly for uterine cramps and for C-section recovery (pads above/below incision associated with lower pain scores, faster bowel function return, and improved recovery). The video demonstrates pad placement, intensity “boost” during contractions, water safety cautions, and what to look for when buying (battery power, adjustable intensity, four leads, one-hand control), comparing budget Amazon units with Babycare OB TENS, L TENS+, and L TENS 2 features.BabyCare TENS: 10MAMASTEFIT For 10% offhttp://babycaretens.com/?afmc=6s

Millions of people in the U.S. have chronic pain that's unresponsive to medical interventions. But there are new and comprehensive ways of treating pain. We explore how emotions, stress, sleep, and diet impact pain, a new option for easing labor pain, and emerging research that could reduce the addictive properties of opioids. We often think of pain as a physical ailment — but newer research shows that pain has as much to do with our brains as it does our bodies. We talk with pain researcher and psychologist Rachel Zoffness about how emotions shape — and construct — our experience of pain, and how identifying the unique biopsychosocial factors contributing to pain can ultimately help patients overcome it. Her new book is "Tell Me Where It Hurts: The New Science of Pain and How to Heal." Giving birth is one of the most painful things many people will experience — which is why a majority of expectant mothers choose epidurals, IV opioids, or both to manage their pain. But recently, another option has been making its way into the delivery room— nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. Reporter Andrew Stelzer explains how N02  stacks up against its competitors, and why a growing number hospitals in the U.S. are offering it as an option. Opioids work well on all kinds of pain — but, as the last few decades have shown, they also pose a severe risk of addiction. We talk with neuroscientist and addiction researcher Anjali Rajadhyaksha about a recent discovery that could make opioids safer.

In this episode, we're talking about pain relief urges: the urge to eat because something hurts and food feels like the fastest way out. That pain might be physical, emotional, or both stacked together — and food may genuinely offer comfort for a little while. But comfort is not the problem. Cost is the question. We'll look at how to tell when food comfort stays low-cost versus when it turns into a high-cost binge, and how to build a wider comfort plan that includes physical care, sensory soothing, connection, movement, expression, and support from other people. Because pain is a normal part of life, but you don't have to meet it with only one tool. This week's experiment: look back over the last seven days and notice what kinds of pain or discomfort showed up most often. If you used food for comfort, ask how much it cost you — then build a lower-cost comfort plan with at least two options, one of which can be food if you feel confident keeping it reasonable. For coaching, visit confidenteaters.com. Coach Caroline and Coach Valerie unpack the real meaning of “steroids” in a running and training context, separating the bodybuilding stereotype from the more practical reality of recovery, inflammation, and pain relief. Valerie explains that many people hear the word steroids and immediately think of big muscles, aggression, and cheating, but in everyday sports medicine the conversation is often about recovery and reducing inflammation so an athlete can keep moving and continue the work needed to heal. The episode also includes Valerie's personal story of pulling her back in a parking lot, taking a pain pill only to get enough relief to stretch and roll, and then recovering through movement rather than medication alone. The bigger message is clear: anti-inflammatories, cortisone, or other pain relief can help in the moment, but they do not solve the root problem. If running keeps causing pain, the answer is to correct the movement pattern, rebuild the habit, and use recovery tools as support rather than as the fix itself.▶️ Free 30-Day RunRX Reboot — Skill, Strength & Self-Care https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0N-GZ0AosI&list=PLDPcF8ZrDdILC8bYyn2zR-4xvqKRzp2re▶️ Join the RunRX Membership https://runrx.fit/join-runrxstrongWebsite: https://runrx.fit App: RunRx Academy — search “RunRx Academy” on Apple App Store or Google Play Support email: support@runrx.fit

Send us Fan MailChronic laminitis forces every equine clinician into the same hard question: when comfort keeps slipping and radiographs keep worsening, what can truly change the mechanics of the foot and the horse's day-to-day life? We sit down with Dr. Jim Orsini to talk about deep digital flexor (DDF) tenotomy, a procedure many people still treat as “last resort,” and why the data argue it may deserve earlier consideration in the right chronic rotational laminitis cases. We dig into what the surgery is actually trying to accomplish: reducing the pull of the deep digital flexor tendon on the coffin bone (third phalanx) so the foot can realign to the ground surface. Jim walks us through the patient selection details that matter, including the rotation versus sinking distinction, and why great farriery is not optional. We also discuss the practical, clinic-friendly ways to judge success, from owner-observed comfort and stable pain-medication needs to radiographic progression like lysis, sole penetration, and hoof wall separation. Then we get into the findings that made us pause, including the striking improvement signal at three to six months and the nuance around age, underlying causes like equine metabolic syndrome, and why chronic cases can be recognized late. We close with the real-world conversation every veterinarian has to have: cost, expectations, and the truth that chronic laminitis care is a long-term commitment, not a one-and-done fix.Subscribe for more equine veterinary surgery and lameness insights, share this with a colleague or farrier you trust, and leave a rating and review so more listeners can find Veterinary Vertex.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.25.12.0839INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ®  OR AJVR ® ?JAVMA ® : https://avma.org/JAVMAAuthorsAJVR ® : https://avma.org/AJVRAuthorsFOLLOW US:JAVMA ® :Facebook: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association - JAVMA | FacebookInstagram: JAVMA (@avma_javma) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: JAVMA (@AVMAJAVMA) / Twitter AJVR ® : Facebook: American Journal of Veterinary Research - AJVR | FacebookInstagram: AJVR (@ajvroa) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: AJVR (@AJVROA) / TwitterJAVMA ®  and AJVR ®  LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/company/avma-journals

In This Episode: Why patients often disappear after experiencing early pain relief The three retention milestones every chiropractic clinic should track Understanding the "Danger Zone" of the first six patient visits How "snowplowing visits" quietly destroys patient outcomes and retention The five fatal flaws that lead to patient drop-off Why becoming the "board doctor" can undermine patient commitment The importance of clearly defining the patient's care journey How to identify and save "quiet quitters" before they leave Why pre-scheduled care plans dramatically improve compliance The dangers of patient-directed care How care plan signatures increase patient commitment The "Express Scheduling" system that produces higher conversion rates Using the Fourth Visit Quiz to reinforce patient education The role of automation, VAs, and technology in improving retention Why the first-visit follow-up phone call remains one of the most powerful retention tools Building a wellness-based practice with long-term patient relationships How to diagnose retention problems with the same precision used in patient care Practical systems for increasing re-exams, re-signs, and wellness conversions Key Takeaway: The absence of pain does not equal the presence of health. The most successful chiropractic clinics understand that patient retention is not about keeping people on a schedule—it's about helping patients understand the value of continued care, guiding them through every phase of treatment, and building systems that support long-term wellness. Stephanie Thaler has lived many lives in one. She survived thyroid cancer at 18, gained 60 pounds during radiation treatment while being isolated in a hospital with zero human contact, and came out the other side with a calling — massage therapy. What followed was 28 years of relentless learning, Guinness World Record-breaking fitness (715 burpees in 60 minutes), becoming the massage therapist for the Minnesota Vikings and the 2022 US Women's Olympic Hockey Team, founding the first barefoot massage school in Minnesota, and becoming the highest-paid manual therapist in her state through a technique called adhesion release methods — a specialized approach to releasing nerve entrapments that only 50 practitioners worldwide are certified in. In this conversation with Freddie, Stephanie breaks down what adhesions actually are, why nerve entrapment goes undetected on MRIs and gets dismissed by conventional medicine, how she's getting results in four to six sessions for people who have been in chronic pain for years, and what the difference is between radial and focused shockwave therapy when treating specific nerve pathways. The second half of this episode goes somewhere deeply personal. Stephanie shares that her father died by suicide on Thanksgiving when she was five years old — and that she spent the next 38 years living in a state of chronic fight or flight, cycling through every SSRI, CBT protocol, and alternative therapy available, never finding lasting relief. Until ketamine. In two weeks of six IV sessions, she healed more trauma than 18 years of cognitive behavioral therapy ever touched. Her father came to her in session. God held her. And she came out glowing. She now does at-home ketamine therapy three to five days a week and credits it with putting her depression into remission and fueling the most successful chapter of her career. This is an honest, science-grounded, spiritually rich conversation about healing the body and the nervous system from the inside out — and what becomes possible when you finally feel safe. Pain relief matters — but is it the same as recovery? In this solo episode of Beyond The Pain, Leigh Brandon takes you behind the scenes of his new book, Beyond The Pain: A Whole-Person Approach to Understanding Pain and Participating in Recovery. After nearly three decades of working with people in persistent pain, Leigh shares why so many people experience temporary relief, only for their pain to return days, weeks, or months later. He explores why pain is often misunderstood when it is reduced to a body part, scan finding, diagnosis, posture issue, or single treatment approach.Through the story of Amelia, a client with recurring neck and shoulder pain, cervical spinal stenosis, fatigue, digestive issues, bloating and headaches, Leigh explains how structural, metabolic, lifestyle, emotional and nervous system factors can all interact to influence pain and recovery. This episode is not about blaming people for their pain. It is about helping people understand that they may have more influence over their recovery than they have been led to believe. In this episode, Leigh discusses:Why pain relief is not always the same as recoveryWhy persistent pain often returns after treatmentHow a diagnosis can be useful — but also limitingWhy pain should not always be viewed as a simple damage signalHow digestion, stress, inflammation, fatigue and movement patterns can all influence painWhy recovery often requires a whole-person frameworkThe difference between personal responsibility and blameWhy Beyond The Pain was writtenYou can find Leigh here:Beyond The Pain book Free Chapter:https://bodychek.co.uk/book-waitlist/Beyond The Pain 14-Day Programme:https://bodychek.co.uk/beyond-the-pain-programme/Pain-Free Plate Free Guide:https://www.bodychek.co.uk/freepainguide/Consult with Leigh:https://www.bodychek.co.uk/consultation/

Most people assume that if a drug sits on the shelf at Costco or Walgreens, it must be pretty safe. But what if some of the most common over-the-counter (OTC) medications are among the riskiest drugs in America? On this vintage episode of Vitality Radio, Jared exposes the hidden dangers behind everyday pain relievers, sleep aids, and heartburn drugs—medicines that cause thousands of deaths every year when misused or taken long-term. You'll learn how a drug becomes “OTC,” what happens when pharmaceutical companies push for that switch, and why the FDA's approval process might not tell the whole story. Jared dives into the startling realities of PPIs like Prilosec, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, and acetaminophen (Tylenol)—uncovering their risks to the liver, kidneys, bones, and brain. He also discusses how marketing convinces consumers these drugs are harmless. Finally, Jared offers a resource for safe, natural alternatives for reflux, pain, inflammation, sleep, and immune support—options that nourish the body instead of depleting it. This episode will change the way you look at “harmless” OTC drugs and help you take real control of your health.Additional Information:#341: Your Digestive Health Supplement User's Guide. New to the show? Start Here: https://breakingupwithbingeeating.transistor.fm/start-herePick the listening path that fits what you're dealing with right now.Show Notes: In this episode, Georgie gives you a practical “urge map” to answer the question that matters in real life: what kind of urge is this? Because the same pantry moment can come from very different mechanisms—and if you use the wrong tool, it's easy to assume you “did it wrong” when you were simply solving the wrong problem. The core skill is matching the tool to the mechanism. You'll learn five common urge types and what each one actually needs: the Low-Fuel urge (under-fueling—food that counts), the Depletion urge (low capacity—less load and a soft landing), the Pain Relief urge (emotional or physical discomfort—soothing and often connection), the Scarcity/Rebellion urge (restriction and “I can't” energy—a believable yes and permission with structure), and the Autopilot urge (cue chains—pattern interruption, not self-criticism). You'll also get a quick five-question check-in to identify what's driving the urge in the moment, plus concrete examples of “permission with structure” and simple ways to break an evening cue chain.Try this week: Pick your most common urge type and run one experiment for seven days—data, not a test. (Afternoon anchor snack; a 10-minute downshift after dinner; a two-word feeling label + one moment of contact; a planned “yes” with structure; or breaking one link in your autopilot routine.)Coming next: Why urges can feel so persuasive even when the eating isn't that enjoyable—wanting vs liking.

Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, an Integrative Medicine physician, researcher, and best-selling author specializing in chronic fatigue syndrome, details “adrenal fatigue,” contrasting Endocrine Society guidelines focused on overt adrenal failure with his view that the adrenals can be functionally exhausted and may be missed by standard testing and “normal ranges.” They discuss adrenal roles in stress response, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, immunity, and symptoms suggesting low adrenal function (irritability when hungry, sugar cravings, fatigue, recurrent infections, lightheadedness/brain fog, mood shifts). Contributors include high sugar intake, chronic stress, dehydration, and salt restriction, with modern media fear/divisiveness cited as a major stressor; hypothalamic dysfunction and circadian rhythm disruption may cause “tired but wired” insomnia. They cover options such as licorice (not DGL), dietary and lifestyle changes, Adrenaplex, adaptogens (ashwagandha standards, HRG80 red ginseng study), phosphatidylserine for high nighttime cortisol, cautious low-dose hydrocortisone thresholds, and DHEA/pregnenolone considerations, plus resources at endfatigue.com.
