We live in a world where connection is everywhere—our notifications buzz with likes, comments, and DMs. And yet, why does it still feel like something's missing? Why do we scroll through highlight reels, surrounded by digital admiration, yet still feel unseen at the end of the day?   Here's what we rarely admit: we don't need more people in our lives; we need deeper connections. The type of connections where you can be yourself—messy bun, tired eyes, no filters—and feel confident in being loved. The kind where you're not performing or proving, just existing—and that's enough.   Today, let's drop the pressure and talk about genuine relationships. The kind that refreshes your soul instead of draining it. Because you don't just deserve friendships—you were made for them. So, let's dig in and find the ones that remind you that you belong. Erin & Elizabeth talk with Gen-X icon Ione Skye (Say Anything, River's Edge, Zodiac), the actress and author of the NYT-bestselling memoir SAY EVERYTHING. Ione's father is the 60s folk wizard and Sunshine Superman, Donovan. But while Donovan did claim Ione's brother Dono as his own, he referred to Ione since birth only as "the girl," only meeting her for the first time when she was by that point a famous teenager. Ione tells us about how his abandonment affected her early romantic relationships with musicians (Anthony Kiedis, Adam Horovitz), what her husband Ben Lee has taught her about consistency, love and fatherhood, and how the road from rejection to reconciliation is paved with self-protection.  This is a public episode. In this episode, I share some thoughts on how self-sabotage is not merely a sign of weakness or failure, but rather a form of self-protection driven by our subconscious mind. When we find ourselves on the brink of progress, it's common to experience a pullback into old patterns. I want to help you understand why this happens. I challenge the traditional narrative around self-sabotage by encouraging listeners to ask more empowering questions. Instead of questioning, "Why am I doing this?"—which can lead to feelings of shame—I suggest we ask, "What is my subconscious trying to tell me?" This shift in perspective allows us to uncover the limiting beliefs that often disguise themselves as self-sabotage. Ok so hear me out here, this topic may sound odd yet this theme came up a few times times in the past week. Once in session with a client and again at Women's group on Wednesday. Women expressing their concern that perhaps certain tendencies indicated that they, themselves, could potentially have narcissistic traits. And yes, Narcissism is an overused & oversaturate term presently yet it DOES exist and it is NOT the same as being overly self concerned due to early life trauma. That's my take and I wanted to share it. On this solo episode I offer my thoughts on why many Women come to be hyper self focused and preoccupied with self preservation as a survival technique resulting from traumatic events. We can come to believe that other's feelings, actions, and moods are due to us because that was the fear we had when our environment as a child was unpredictable & unstable. Or if we overly worry about things working out for us, it's because we've been hurt in the past, not because we're selfish. This and more is discussed and of course an oracle card pull.  Nature Whispers Oracle Cards; https://blueangelonline.com/shop/card-decks/oracle-cards/natures-whispers/* Women Waken Wednesdays will be held weekly on Wednesdays at 6pm PST starting in February! Looking for magic in your every day? You've found the right podcast episode! Today, in addition to Robyn and Karen, meet other key members of the Seeking Center Team, Lisa Capretto and Noel Kehoe, who are joining us in the spirit of Halloween and the magical energy that comes with this time of year! Together, they've found several  simple spells that can bring more peace, protection, and clarity into your life. And btw, what is a spell? A spell is typically understood as a set of words, gestures, or rituals believed to invoke supernatural powers to achieve a desired outcome. It has roots in many ancient traditions and is often associated with magic, witchcraft, and spiritual practices. In different cultures and throughout history, spells have been seen as a way to influence the physical world or manipulate unseen forces, often for healing, protection, love, or prosperity. In modern times, spells have taken on various forms depending on the belief system or spiritual path. Many contemporary practitioners see spells as a way to focus intention, aligning their will with spiritual or cosmic energies, which is how we'll be using the spells we talk about today as symbolic acts that blend belief, intention, and ritual to harness energy toward specific outcomes, a practice that continues to evolve across cultures and belief systems. Most of these can be used year-round, but we thought they'd be especially timely right now. So, what resonates with you? Whether you want to attract abundance, release old energy, or manifest more love in your life, there's something for everyone! As you celebrate this Halloween, maybe a little magic will make its way into your life too!Visit theseekingcenter.com for more from Robyn + Karen, plus mega inspo -- and the best wellness + spiritual practitioners, products and experiences on the planet! Something happens in your life. A stimulus if you will. Something happens, somebody says or does something, and you have an immediate and uncontrollable reaction. Boom. This is natural and it is the human experience. Here is what happens though. Your brain does what it's made to do. It attaches meaning to what happened. It creates a story based upon the entirety of your life experience and exposure thus far. But here is the kicker. Your brain immediately makes up a story with one motive; to protect you. Life happens, your brain interprets it and creates a story in order to protect you. Comprehending that should cause you to take a big step backward. Whoa! It's your brain doing what it's supposed to do, but in today's world of relative safety and security, is protecting ourselves the most constructive priority? Maybe. Maybe not. It depends. I want to help you, and me, be aware that our brain is programmed to take everything that happens during our day, every source of input, and immediately run it through a filter of self-protection. And we don't get our authentic selves from it. I saw a post recently that said “Awakening is not changing who we are, but discarding who we are not.” Our natural, self-protective selves are not our authentic selves. The point, much of our drive, in everything, everyday, is self-protection. This is not a true, strong, positive, productive and progressive drive. It's like driving with your parking brake on. I have a story for you to help give you some freedom. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. This is one of the most emotional broadcasts I've ever done: “mommy issues.” We hear this phrase a lot as it relates to men. And we hear the phrase “daddy issues” when discussing women. But rarely do we explore the challenging relationship dynamics that exist between mothers and daughters. The intricately woven connection that comes from once sharing a body to the challenges and hurdles that come with sharing our lives. Whether you're a mother or a daughter, or have either in your life, you will want to tune in. I explore the issues that grip us in childhood and can sometimes keep us frozen in that trauma and petrified in pain as we steer the precarious voyage of adulthood. ACross Generations Executive Producer, Carla Wilmaris- who is in her thirties, joins me for this conversation as she journeys through being a mother of a teen daughter while confronting wounds that still bleed both with her own mother and now her offspring. While our seasoned elder Glennis Crosby, 62 revisits a painful past and helps us all navigate the tough passage of understanding, grace, empathy, peace, and forgiveness as she is now a caretaker of her aging mom.  Regardless of the relationship you have with your mother or children, this is an episode that digs deep and unearths the intense sentiments that family relations inevitably arouse across generations. Caller Olivia's Question: "I have been in and out of trauma therapy the past couple of years. I stop because my husband believes that a few sessions of talking will help me to get over "whatever it is I need to get over". I have trauma from my childhood and trauma in our marriage. my husband has been a monster, he is an addict to prescription paid meds for pain and porn. There has been physical, mental, emotional abuse, gas lighting and sexual assault. We have started work on a lot of this now that he is in recovery, however it seems that we are dealing with his problems and getting him better, but as always I am forgotten. one of his boundaries is lying. I have told lies as what I feel is self preservation, this started when I was very young to keep my safe. I am not sure how to stop and be truthful and authentic. I feel like I am stuck in my pattern of self preservation to keep me protected that I don't know how to stop. I am ready to be venerable.
