History has not graced us with many details about Shakespeare as a person, but we do know that he and his wife had three children, including a son named Hamnet who died at the age of 11 in 1596, four years before Shakespeare went on to write his great tragedy “Hamlet.”Maggie O'Farrell's novel “Hamnet” — one of the Book Review's 10 Best Books of 2020, and the source of Chloé Zhao's new movie of the same name — starts from those scant facts, and spins them into a powerful story of grief, art and family steeped in the textures of late-16th-century life.In this episode of the Book Review Book Club, host MJ Franklin discusses “Hamnet” with his colleagues Leah Greenblatt, Jennifer Harlan and Sarah Lyall. Other works mentioned in this podcast:“Hamlet,” “King Lear,” “Macbeth,” “The Winter's Tale,” by William Shakespeare“Little Women,” by Louisa May Alcott“Grief Is the Thing With Feathers,” by Max Porter“Lincoln in the Bardo,” by George Saunders“Fi,” by Alexandra Fuller“Things In Nature Merely Grow,” by Yiyun Li“The Accidental Tourist,” by Anne Tyler“Will in the World” and “Dark Renaissance,” by Stephen Greenblatt“Gabriel,” by Edward Hirsch“Once More We Saw Stars,” by Jayson Greene“The Dutch House,” by Ann Patchett Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Literature isn't a horse race. Taste is subjective, and artistic value can't be measured in terms of “winners" and “losers.”That doesn't mean it's not fun to try.The book world's awards season officially kicked off on Oct. 9, when the Hungarian novelist Laszlo Krasznahorkai won the 2025 Nobel Prize, and continued this month when the Booker Prize in England went to the novel “Flesh,” by the British writer David Szalay (also of Hungarian descent, as it happens). Then this week, five National Book Award winners were crowned in various categories at a ceremony in New York.On this episode of the podcast, the host MJ Franklin talks with his fellow Book Review editors Emily Eakin, Joumana Khatib and Dave Kim about the finalists, the winners and what this year's big book awards might tell us about the state of literature in 2025.We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. Nash Falls by David Baldacci Walter Nash is a sensitive, intelligent and kindhearted man. He has a wife and a daughter and a very high-level position at Sybaritic Investments, where his innate skills and dogged tenacity have carried him to the top of the pyramid in his business career. Despite never going on grand adventures, and always working too many hours, he has a happy and upscale life with his family. However, following his estranged Vietnam-veteran father's funeral, Nash is unexpectedly approached by the FBI in the middle of the night. They have an important request: become their inside man to expose an enterprise that is laundering large sums of money through Sybaritic. At the top of this illegal operation is Victoria Steers, an international criminal mastermind that the FBI has been trying to bring down for years. Nash has little choice but to accept the FBI's demands and try to bring Steers and her partners to justice. But when Steers discovers that Nash is working with the FBI, she turns the tables on him in a way he never could have contemplated. And that forces Nash to take the ultimate step both to survive and to take his revenge: He must become the exact opposite of who he has always been. And even that may not be enough. A Short History of Nearly Everything 2.0 by Bill Bryson Bill Bryson can't contain his curiosity about the world around him. A Short History of Nearly Everything 2.0 is the result of his quest to understand everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization – how we got from being nothing at all to what we are today. Now fully updated to reflect the many scientific discoveries in the last twenty years since this book was first published, it explains among much else: Why Pluto is no longer a planet How the number of moons in the solar system has more than doubled in 20 years How scientists used advances in genetics to discover previously unknown species of early humans Why we still don't know what most of the universe is made of How the little Higgs boson transformed physics This journey through time and space will inform a new generation of readers, young and old, as well as those who read this book on first publication with a new perspective based on what we know now. Written in his inimitable style, Bryson makes complex subjects fascinating and accessible to everyone with an interest in the world around them. Send us a textAsha Greyjoy bent the knee to King Stannis. She's been rewarded with shackles but is also treated as the king's prize in his army's ill-fated march on Winterfell. Simon and Mackelly hope she's packed her thermals.Chapter Review:Stannis Baratheon's army winds out of Deepwood Motte. Among the baggage rolls Asha Greyjoy, fettered and guarded by Alysane “She-Bear” Mormont. Asha is Stannis's living trophy for the lords of the north. The king plans to march 100 leagues through the forest in 15 days to Winterfell. A feat many of his followers claim his brother Robert would have done in 10 days. But this king is not his brother.Asha watches Stannis's grim procession with a broken ankle and a sharper mind. She recalls kneeling before him to save the last nine of her men and finds no mercy in the king, only duty. The southrons doubted the march but the northmen insisted.Snow begins on the fourth day and never stops. Wagons vanish through ice, men freeze or simply sit down to die. The queen's men call for a sacrifice to please their red god. “Pray harder,” Stannis tells them. Each night brings a smaller campfire and a growing list of losses. By day 20, Asha's cart horse dies. Her shackles come off, but she must walk. The food's gone, the grain's gone, and hope is dwindling. Only the northmen seem unaffected by "autumn's kiss."At last they find a crofter's village. An opportunity to fish the frozen lake and huddle in the storm. Come morning, there are no trumpets, no warhorns, only white silence. Stannis's army is snowbound, starving, and still a hundred miles from Winterfell. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Asha Greyjoy - princess of the Iron Islands.Stannis Baratheon - Claimant to the Iron Throne, as Cersei's children aren't Robert's.Justin Massey - Knight of the Crownlands.Dagmar Cleftjaw - Ironborn Captain, currently holding Torren's Square.Deepwood Motte - Fortified town in the north-west of the North. Send us a textToday we continue our coverage of the Wicked 5-book universe by Gregory Maguire with book three: A Lion Among Men, the only book in the series primarily told through the point of view and perspective of an Animal. The “Wicked Years” move forward with spinoff stories covering all the major players in the political upheaval of Oz, and we're diving into the “real” story of “the cowardly lion.”Check out our kickoff  “Are Books Political" episode all about why books and reading are inherently political and why it's not only important to acknowledge this, but to read our favorite books through this lens. We concluded during our subsequent deep dive of Wicked (book one) and Son of a Witch (book 2) that Maguire intentionally uses the fantastical to expertly critique issues like authoritarianism, colonialism, and racism, just to name a few.In this episode we dive into book three: A Lion Among Men, released thirteen years after Wicked, which follows the life of Sir Brrr, disenfranchised Animal, Oz Sycophant, Dorothy companion, and ultimately a friend to the rebel cause as he grapples with what it means to contain all of these different identities in the politically broken landscape of Oz. Who were our favorite and least favorite characters and plot points? Was this book what we expected?  Do we think these books can be separated from politics just because they're fantasy?  What philosophical questions are posed? And what literary devices does Maguire use to critique things like the use of propaganda by governments to sway public opinion and the subsequent construction of “history?”Fantasy stories can be so much more than surface level storytelling, and often are. We're here to discover why! Listen on for our reviews of book three, our deep dive reactions with five sentence summary, and fun facts about the book that started the Wicked phenomena! Don't be shy, subscribe! But since The Iron Islands are death to him, and Winterfell is the only home he's ever known, where would he go? In this episode of The Growing Readers Podcast, host Bianca Schulze welcomes Academy Award-winning director, animator, and author Alan Barillaro to discuss his middle-grade novel, Bunns Rabbit. Best known for directing Pixar's beloved animated short Piper, Alan brings over 25 years of animation experience to the page with a deeply moving tale about a brave rabbit born with unusually short ears who must find her place in a world that fears her because she's different. What began as a vulnerable leap from the security of animation—where Alan could "hide behind a monster"—became an intimate exploration of belonging, courage, and following your heartsong. Alan shares how his childhood struggles with dyslexia and his habit of reading backwards shaped his creative journey, why Roald Dahl's The Witches became a pivotal moment in his development as a storyteller, and how his personal experiences became woven into Bunns's world. With honesty and warmth, he reveals why he never feels "up to the task" as a creator, how vulnerability is essential to authentic storytelling, and why treating young readers with the same respect as adults creates the most powerful connections.Read the transcript on The Children's Book Review.Highlights:From Animation to Prose: Why Alan's editor had to convince him to write a novel instead of a graphic novelThe Roald Dahl Awakening: How a fourth-grade book report on The Witches changed everythingLearning to Read Backwards: Alan's experience with dyslexia and finding his way to storytellingHide and Seek: Why animators feel like actors and how that prepared (and didn't prepare) Alan for writingPersonal Sketches to Story: How drawings from his son's baseball games and his daughter's monarch butterfly became part of Bunns's worldThe Garden Approach: Alan's method of throwing story "seeds" without knowing which ideas will growColor Scripts and Heartsongs: How film techniques like color scripting and specific music playlists shape his book writingBalancing Dark and Light: Creating illustrations that feel both shadowy and luminousEaster Eggs and Book Two: What's planted in Bunns Rabbit that will pay off in the sequelNotable Quotes:"I think Bunns would ask you to be true to yourself and that she would remind you that everyone feels that way... there isn't a single character in the story that doesn't feel a little different." —Alan Barillaro"I felt like Roald Dahl always spoke to me like you would speak to an adult... the honesty and there's like some truth to what he's saying or cruelty, like he has all these little sides of him that as a young reader I found just really attractive." —Alan BarillaroBooks Mentioned:Bunns Rabbit by Alan Barillaro: Amazon or Bookshop.orgWhere the Water Takes Us: Amazon or Bookshop.orgThe Witches by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake: Amazon or Bookshop.orgRevolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake: Amazon or Bookshop.orgMadame Badobedah series by Sophie Dahl: Amazon or Bookshop.orgAbout Alan Barillaro:Alan Barillaro is an Academy Award-winning director, writer, and animator who has spent over 25 years at Pixar Animation Studios bringing beloved characters to life. On Nov. 10, 1975, during a calamitous storm, the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk below the waves of Lake Superior. All 29 men aboard went down with the vessel. With no survivors and no eyewitnesses, there's always been a sense of mystery to what is arguably the most famous shipwreck in American history. The story itself was almost immediately immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot's surprise hit ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”Fifty years on, John U. Bacon has written a new account of the disaster. In “The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” he humanizes the story, telling stories of each man on the ship as well as several of the families left behind. (Readers will also learn a good deal about the history of industry and shipping on the Great Lakes.). [Episode II of II]In this thought-provoking episode, Valerie and guest Casey McFarland dive into part two of their series comparing the dynamics between orthodox leadership and progressive membership in both the early Christian church and in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They explore the discovery of the Gnostic Gospels and how their divergent beliefs sparked friction with orthodox leaders of the time. The conversation addresses the parallels between historical and contemporary challenges, such as the struggles around authority, the role of women, and the push and pull between rigidity and progressive thought.  The fascinating conclusion:  What we are experiencing is utterly predictable, has happened before, and is more about the frictions around community, cohesion, and the inevitability that some souls much grow...even in a correlated space! Did you hear their announcement about the Latter Day Struggles 2026 trip to Italy?  Listen in and catch up if you didn't!   Previous episodes referenced:  159:  LDS University Students Pressured to Not Ask Hard Questions 160:  Why Scientific & Academic Inquiry IS Spiritual Seeking!Timestamps:00:00 Introduction and Welcome00:20 Comparing Modern and Early Christian Dynamics01:12 Recap of Last Episode01:21 The Gnostic Gospels and Early Christian Writings03:45 Role of Women and Educated in Early Christianity06:40 Evolution of God and Spiritual Development07:38 Historical Parallels in Religious Thought10:38 Authority and Questioning in Faith18:11 Modern Reflections on Historical Religious Tensions24:54 Inclusivity and Development in Faith Traditions26:42 Contradictions in Logic and Authority28:16 The Role of Satan in Early Christian Debates31:30 Personal Experiences and Institutional Authority34:05 The Struggle for Inner Authority and Faith Development38:27 The Tension Between Tradition and Progress50:15 Invitation to Italy: Exploring Early Christian History53:38 Closing Remarks and Future PlansSupport the showSupport the show Listen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Access $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Access $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Gift a Scholarship Download Free Resources Visit our Website
