In this episode, Josh and Drew tackle one of the most counterintuitive concepts in overcoming panic attacks: learning how to panic better, rather than trying to avoid panic altogether. When facing a new job triggers familiar panic patterns, many people focus on preventing anxiety rather than developing a healthier relationship with it. Drew and Josh explore why "learning how to panic" is often the key to breaking free from panic disorder and agoraphobia.Josh and Drew discuss the difference between panic attacks (the physical experience) and panic disorder (how we modify our lives to avoid those attacks). They challenge the common belief that panic attacks are disasters that must be prevented at all costs, instead suggesting that true recovery comes from accepting that panic might happen—and discovering that we can handle it.Why avoiding panic attacks keeps you stuck in the cycleThe difference between learning "how to not panic" vs. "how to panic"Setting the right intention before challenging situationsHow catastrophic thinking creates unrealistic disaster scenariosThe role of willful tolerance in anxiety recoveryAddressing deeper fears about judgment and rejection at work[03:45] - Josh and Drew introduce the concept: "This isn't about learning how to not panic. This is about getting better at panicking."[11:30] - Drew challenges the core belief: "What would happen if I was wrong about that? What would happen if I'm wrong and I can actually handle having a panic attack at work?"[18:30] - Josh on setting intentions: "I'm going to go and do this thing and see how well I can do whilst panicking."[25:00] - Community win featuring someone who practiced "doing it anyway" during difficult existential thoughts[30:10] - Success story: Concert attendance despite anxiety, demonstrating attention redirection techniques[33:50] - Driving breakthrough story: Overcoming agoraphobia through gradual exposure and value-based action---The Exposure Explained workshop Drew mentioned in the episode:https://learn.theanxioustruth.com/exposure-explained---Disordered Roundtables are here! Can you be a Christian without the church? In this timely episode, Dr. Carmen Imes argues forcefully—and pastorally—that Christianity without community is a contradiction. Drawing from her new book Becoming God's Family, she and Dru Johnson explore why so many people are walking away from church and what it would take to draw them back. From church hurt to spiritual abuse to toxic celebrity culture, Carmen doesn't shy away from the reasons people leave. But she also offers theological and pastoral wisdom on why we can't give up on the church. They explore biblical stories of failed community, why Hagar's story matters, and what healthy faithfulness looks like in a flawed body. They also discuss when it's time to leave a church, how American and global cultures can distort biblical community, and why true belonging means discomfort, difference, and even lament. Drawing on stories from her life and ministry, Carmen makes the case that church isn't about getting what we want—it's about becoming who we're meant to be. As both a science journalist and a sci-fi writer, Annalee Newitz thinks a lot about what our technology-saturated future might hold for us. Newitz's new novella, “Automatic Noodle,” is set in 2060's postwar San Francisco after California has seceded from the U.S. In the midst of an exploitative dystopia, a crew of robots opens a noodle shop with a sweet and resilient commitment to community, excellent food and rebuilding. We talk about what Newitz sees in our AI future, and how the values and community bonds that have long made San Francisco great may fare then, and now. Introducing yet another "genre" or podcast episode here at Holy Wild Birth: The Community Hearth Call where we host a live coaching call in our community on Mighty Networks and take live "callers" on camera with us to talk through their questions and conundrums regarding their calling as birth servants. On this inaugural community hearth call, you'll hear: Trandi and her quest to catch up with the call of her community to attend births, how she wants to shape her business and what sort of birthworker she wants to be (one who does "nothing"). At the end she receives a "kiss from the Lord" that's very sweet.Elizabeth wrestles with how to build a meaningful and supportive community with local midwives and doulas when the path she is walking is pretty different than theirs and what it means to harness rebellious tendencies for good.Jakota wonders whether being a birthkeeper is dangerous and hears Lauren and Brooke discuss the need to face the fear and follow God anyway because birth attnedants have never not been persecuted.

What happens when you realize the life you've built isn't fully yours? When the career, relationships, or goals you've been chasing were shaped more by approval and outside expectations than your own true desires?
After seeing friends and neighbors in their community of Pasadena, CA, being terrorized, assaulted, and abducted by masked federal agents, Daniela Navin and Jeannette De la Riva joined together with other neighbors in their area to form Grupo Auto Defensa and fight back. In this crossover episode of Working People, recorded with Professor David Palumbo-Liu and the Speaking Out of Place podcast, TRNN editor-in-chief Maximillian Alvarez joins Daniela Navin and Jeannette De la Riva to discuss the origins of Grupo Auto Defensa and the power of grassroots resistance in the face of the Trump administration's authoritarian assault on immigrant communities and the rule of law. It's time to check in with my guest Winnona Yi, who first appeared on this podcast when she was just 3 months into her plant-based diet transition. How is she doing now, more than a year later? Recall that prior to this dietary change, she had been eating a regular diet heavy in fast foods, and had many health problems including a skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa, as well as high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. But after she moved to a whole food plant-based diet, her health and her life changed…drastically. And one year later, there are even more positive changes, especially in terms of needing to take less meds and more weight loss.
