Good evening, fellow peaches! Anyone remember the Fall of 1987?
Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is massive, bigger than the state of Florida. If it collapses, it could reshape every coast on this planet during this century. That's why it's sometimes known as “the Doomsday Glacier.”And yet, until recently, we knew very little about it. Because Thwaites is extremely remote, reachable only by crossing the wildest ocean on the planet, scientists had never observed its calving edge firsthand. In 2019, a ground-breaking international mission set out to change that, and writer Elizabeth Rush was on board to document the voyage. We caught up with her to learn about life on an Antarctic icebreaker, how she grappled with classic Antarctic narratives about exploration (and domination), and how she summons hope even after coming face-to-face with Thwaites. This episode was first published in early 2024. Featuring Elizabeth Rush. SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support. Click here to become a sustaining member. LINKSIf you're interested in reading more about the journey to Thwaites, check out Elizabeth's book, “The Quickening: Creation and Community at the Ends of the Earth”.A paper published in Nature with some of the findings from Elizabeth's voyage, showing that Thwaites has historically retreated two to three times faster than we've ever observed. Here's the one detailing findings about Thwaites' past extent, extrapolated from their study of ancient penguin bones, and another sharing observations about water currents beneath its ice shelf. The Trump administration has pulled funding for the US's only Antarctic icebreaker dedicated to scientific research. In this episode, Dan and Jason discuss their recent hunting experiences, focusing on youth hunting, the importance of starting young hunters off right, and the use of trail cameras and mock scrapes. They delve into the shifting deer movement patterns, the influence of social media on hunting expectations, and the realities of the October lull. The conversation emphasizes the joy of hunting, the evolution of hunting practices, and the importance of community engagement in the hunting world. takeaways Chasing mule deer can be more about the experience than the kill. Youth hunting is a great way to introduce kids to the sport. Starting young hunters with does can build their confidence. Trail cameras and mock scrapes are essential tools for tracking deer. Deer movement patterns shift with the seasons and environmental changes. Social media can create unrealistic expectations for hunters. Enjoying the hunt is more important than the size of the deer. The October lull is often misunderstood; deer are still active. It's okay to hunt for meat and for trophies. Community engagement and sharing experiences enhance the hunting culture. Finding local atheist community is nerve-wracking for new non-believers who fear rejection and marginalization from friends, family, and society. The pervasive "Christonormativity" or "Theo-normativity" makes atheists feel inherently "weird" for simply existing, which fuels widespread fear despite modern communication tools. Straight white men are often more likely to adopt the atheist label, while women and people of color face compounded isolation, fearing negative "second and third order effects". Building small, local tribes through efforts like charity work is vital to combat the perception that atheists are uncaring. Ultimately, the goal is reaching a secular world where non-belief is viewed as just as natural as not being racist". On this episode we talk about: Growing up in a small Midwestern town, working every day since 13, and becoming a leading business creator Turning a garage-tinkering childhood into a career as a toy inventor, then product startup founder How relentless optimism, reinvention, and standing atop “a mountain of failures” led to big wins Advice for founders: building with community, manifesting vision, securing funding, and the importance of thinking big—even if you're starting small Behind the scenes of Tiny Organics' explosive first-year growth, building a cult following, and scaling product through grass-roots founding families Top 3 Takeaways Every breakthrough product stands on a mountain of failed attempts; grit and adaptability win. Welcome back to another Business Live Show! Today we go live with Brad Smith and Contractor Keith (36 years in the trades, 300+ homes built) for a candid teardown of Keith's next chapter. After a life-altering health crisis and a move to The Villages, he's shifting from spec builds to systems, automations, and AI—launching Punchlist Media (Notion workspaces, n8n automations, custom LLM knowledge bases) and scoping a community + marketplace concept for AI builders and buyers. We map his MVP, tame imposter syndrome, and design a business that optimizes for peace, purpose, and steady cash flow—not chaos.Key Highlights:- Why the pivot: How a major health scare, caregiver support, and a cross-country move clarified Keith's decision to leave high-stress spec building for ops systems and AI.- Punchlist Media (v1): Notion as a relational database (not a spreadsheet), n8n for low-cost automations, and custom LLMs to turn SOPs into searchable knowledge.- “Strata” (working title): A community + marketplace for solo AI devs & small teams (think Shopify × Stack Overflow × Upwork × Gumroad) with code, gigs, and peer support.- Community before code: Build a free flagship Notion template, weekly build-in-public updates, live office hours, and a newsletter to validate before heavy software.- Imposter syndrome, solved: Your story is the brand. Ship value, show the process, and let people join the journey—credibility compounds in public.- Designing for life: Pick the game you want to play—Keith optimizes for sanity and cash flow, not a $100M exit. Systems + people = durable calm growth.- Selling the trades is hard: Contractors are skeptical; a smarter wedge is AI + operations for any small business—earn trust with utility, not hype.If today's live breakdown helped, share it with a friend, drop a review, and join us Wednesdays at 2:30 PM ET on X & LinkedIn for the next live teardown.

What does it take to build a thriving solo pet care business rooted in community? Olivia Hanson of Waggin Tails Winona shares her journey from a banking job to becoming a full-time pet sitter and dog walker. She discusses the power of word-of-mouth, the value of community collaborations, and the joy she finds in organizing monthly pack walks. Olivia also shares how boundaries and relationships with other sitters help protect her joy and prevent burnout. It's a story about trusting your path and finding purpose in pet care. Main Topics Transitioning from banking to pet care Community pack walks and how they started Collaboration with trainers, photographers, and shelters Client boundaries and protecting mental health Solo sitter support and peer mentorship Main Takeaway: “Protecting my peace is my biggest thing—and that's making me better at my job.” As a solo pet sitter, it's easy to feel like you have to say yes to every job, every time. But that can lead to burnout, overwhelm, and even losing the joy that got you into pet care in the first place. Olivia Hanson reminds us that setting boundaries isn't selfish—it's strategic. By focusing on quality over quantity and making space for rest and connection, she's built a sustainable business she still loves. Protect your peace, and you protect your passion.
In this heart-opening conversation, we sit down with Shahem - Black queer therapist, content creator, and community organizer whose work bridges grief, joy, and resistance. Together we explore how to grieve in a culture that doesn't make space for loss, how joy can be a radical practice of survival, and how resistance can look like choosing authenticity when the world wants you numb. This episode is a reminder that balance is about staying connected to ourselves and each other through it all.In this episode we explore:✨ Grief as more than death—why losing a job, identity, or sense of autonomy deserves to be honored as loss

So often, money feels like something we're supposed to figure out alone — a private, even isolating part of life. But the truth is, money is deeply relational. It impacts our families, friendships, and sense of belonging far more than we realize. In this episode, I explore how to move from money as isolation to money as connection. I share why talking about money openly is powerful, how generosity can deepen community, and why learning to receive is just as important as giving. Because when we bring money out of secrecy and into community, it stops being scary…and starts building belonging

During my Bible study, a few words really stood out to me: hope and reconciled. Because of our faith, we have peace with God through Jesus, our relationship with Him is restored, and we're no longer His enemies. My biggest takeaway? Because of Jesus' love and sacrifice, I'm made right with God, I have peace and hope even in hard times, and I can live with joy knowing I've been fully forgiven and restored to Him.Friend, I hope this episode reminds you that even in the trials, even in the waiting, God is working. He's not done with your story, and He's always faithful.
