Running is one of the most accessible forms of exercise, offering benefits that extend far beyond cardiovascular fitness. In this episode of Health Matters, host Courtney Allison speaks with Dr. Morgan Busko, a sports medicine physician at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia and a competitive triathlete, about the physical and mental rewards of running. Dr. Busko explains why strength training is a critical foundation for runners and discusses how exercises that target the core and gluteal muscles can improve stability and help prevent injuries. She also breaks down the differences between dynamic warmups and static stretching, explaining how proper preparation can support healthier training. The conversation covers practical strategies for runners at every level, from walk-run programs for beginners to training plans for race day. Dr. Busko shares advice on gradually increasing mileage, building endurance safely, and avoiding common training mistakes that can lead to injury. Finally, she discusses the important roles sleep, nutrition, hydration, and recovery play in athletic performance, debunks the myth that running causes arthritis, and offers encouragement for anyone looking to start or return to running. In the mythology of ancient Egypt, the universe began when a great god emerged from the void. He created the air and the divine order of the world. And they gave birth to the land and sky. That’s one of countless creation stories – attempts to explain the birth of the universe. To modern science, the best explanation is the Big Bang, an instant of creation 13.8 billion years ago. Several pieces of evidence support the Big Bang. For one, on the largest scales, galaxies are all racing away from each other. If you trace the motion back in time, everything comes together in a single point. For another, the Big Bang left its “fingerprints” on the universe – an afterglow known as the cosmic microwave background. It was created when the early universe had cooled enough for light to travel freely. As the universe expanded, the afterglow shifted to radio wavelengths, which we see in every direction. One more bit of evidence is the way elements are created. According to the theory, the Big Bang itself created hydrogen and helium, the simplest elements. Later, the first stars “fused” those elements together to make heavier ones. Over time, the percentage of heavy elements has increased as stars make more of them and release them into space. And that’s just what astronomers observe when they look into the universe – a steady build-up of heavier elements, dating to the beginning of time. More tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Ep 402 Liberating Theory, Getting Started

RevolutionZ

Episode 402 of RevolutionZ moves from part one of a sequence about ideology to part two of it, from critique of an old ideology to transcend to offering a  a new one to consider and extend.  Too often activists agree on outrage but fracture over the explanation,  strategy, root cause, and solution. The last few episodes have argued that Marxism Leninism not only doesn't preclude such divisions, but  to elicit them. So this time we begin a new sequence of episodes to propose an alternative for your consideration. The new series works off of Liberating Theory, a collectively written book that Michael Albert co-authored with Leslie Cagan, Noam Chomsky, Robin Hahnel, Mel King, Lydia Sargent, and Holly Sklar, built around what we took to be a pressing need for a shared conceptual toolbox that would help movements understand society well enough to collectively change it. Albert and Hahnel generated a first draft but then all seven corrected, appended, and refined our way through subsequent drafts. At the very outset, we each individually offered a brief statement of our advocacy of the finished book, our hopes and motives for it, including of the tension we all felt between winning immediate relief from oppression and building a future worth fighting for. From there the book digs right into method: for example, why activist theory has to be accurate but also usable in trying circumstances, why it has to confront race, gender, class, and authority without turning any one of them into the only story, and how without effective concepts movements can unintentionally reproduce the very biases and even hierarchies they oppose. That takes us into a critique of using a toolbox that elevates one or another sphere of social life as the primary key to social change, the limits of eclectic pluralism that mechanically combines two or more spheres without addressing how their intersections can alter even the defining attributes of each, and the authors attempt to build a more integrated framework that the book calls "complementary holism." We also introduce the book's fictional and informal dialogues that we designed to provoke debate even as they offer some humor. A Marxist Leninist, a radical feminist, a nationalist, an anarchist, an advocate of Liberating Theory and others argue over what belongs at the center of analysis, who gets erased in coalitions, and the “stew” problem of mixing perspectives without one flavor swallowing the rest. The authors were all deeply involved in movement life, organizing, writing, etc. They felt a pressing need for shared vision and strategy and to achieve it they felt movements needed to share an underlying conceptual framework as well. They came together to all work on the resulting framework that they called Liberating Theory. I, Michael, am taking a liberty in presenting it to you as an episode a full forty years after we collectively settled on and signed our names to its words. What Liberating Theory tells us about the mid eighties and more important about whether its insights live up to present needs and potentials is for you to determine. Support the show

Gen X and Boomers control the majority of American household wealth, drink more often than any younger cohort, and moderate the least. Few people make that case more directly than Antonia Fattizzi and Brian Choi. Antonia, founder of the consultancy Cork and Tin, spent a decade as a rep on the street before launching her firm in 2012, and has built her practice around the generation the industry keeps forgetting. Brian, Managing Partner and CEO of The Food Institute, oversees what he calls the Bloomberg of the food and beverage industry, tracking real-time data across retail, food service, and manufacturing. In this episode, recorded live at Bar Convent Brooklyn as Part 2 of our "Cracking the Generational Code" series, Antonia and Brian ask what the industry gives up by aiming nearly every sales and marketing dollar at younger drinkers. What does it cost a brand when the generation most likely to stay loyal for a decade is the one its marketing plan never mentions? Why are the consumers with the most disposable income in the country not buying the bottle you built for them, and where are they spending instead? What does authenticity mean to a cohort that has been marketed at for forty years and can identify a gimmick on sight? And which channels is the industry walking past entirely because it already decided who its customer is supposed to be?Park Street Imports is the back-office and importing solution for alcoholic beverage brands launching and scaling in the U.S. market.Featured Guests:Antonia Fattizzi, Founder, Cork and TinBrian Choi, Managing Partner & CEO, The Food InstituteMentioned in the Episode:Cork & TinThe Food InstituteWant to stay in the know about new episodes from the podcast? If you've ever lost everything (a business, a marriage, your sense of who you are) this conversation is proof that the collapse isn't the end of your story. Rick Trimmer walks through the exact math he and his wife used to climb out of $640,000 in debt: the thousand-day stretch with no pay, the decade of living on a thousand dollars a month, and the brutal conversations he had with himself and his wife about what they actually wanted. If you're in the hole right now, or you're scared of ever being in it, this is the blueprint for how a man digs out without excuses and without quitting on his family. But this isn't just a comeback story; it's a lesson in delayed gratification and what winning the game really looks like. We'll cover how to build passive income, take advantage of opportunities that scare you, and chose freedom over the appearance of success. If you're tired of chasing a lifestyle you can't afford, or you're ready to start building something that actually lasts, this conversation gives you the mindset and the moves to get there. Sometimes a client knows something needs to change, but that does not necessarily mean they are ready to change it yet. Other times they seem to be making real progress and then suddenly slip back into old habits. As a coach, those moments can be frustrating if we expect change to move in a straight line. Maria and Cody walk through the six stages of change—pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse—and explore what those stages can teach us about meeting clients where they actually are. They also spend time on an important distinction that can be easy to miss: preparing to change can sometimes feel a lot like taking action, even when the real change has not started yet. Cody also shares a practical exercise he uses to help clients think ahead about a possible financial relapse, including what it might look like, how it could affect them, and what they could do to respond. Maria adds another layer by encouraging clients to think about what might lead up to the relapse in the first place so they can begin recognizing the pattern earlier. Understanding the stages does not give us control over someone else's change. It gives us language for understanding the process, helps us ask better questions, and can give both the coach and the client a little more patience and grace along the way.

When your doctor gives you 3 months to live, what do you do with the company you spent 23 years building? What do you do with your life? What would crash most people resulted in another successful business venture for Yaron. What kind of person can do that?Let's find out!Yaron Assabi built 1 of South Africa's first e-commerce businesses in 1998 — before most of the country had ever been online. He rode the dot-com wave to a FTSE listing, watched it crash, bought his own company back, and spent the next 2 decades quietly building Digital Solutions Group into 7 specialist businesses serving brands like Nando's, KFC, DStv and Coca-Cola across Africa, the Middle East and the UK.Then, in April 2021, everything stopped. 3 cancers, diagnosed at once. A family history that had already taken his mother at 39 and his father twenty years later. Doctors gave him 3 months without chemo. He chose to fight it his own way instead — and rebuilt his health, his mindset, and eventually a whole other business, from the ground up.This episode is the rare kind of conversation that moves fluidly between "how do you scale 7 companies" and "how do you sit with your own mortality and choose to do your own thing" that only Yaron could pull off so well it feels. In this episode, you'll learn:How Yaron decides what to say yes to The shared-services model that lets DSG launch new startups faster every time, without founders having to be good at everythingWhy he believes a business that depends on its founder is a business that hasn't really been built yet — and how to design yours so it can run without youThe exact morning system Yaron credits with his recovery and the energy that carries him through his dayWhat changed in his mind the day he was diagnosed — and why he says fear is just "a false experience appearing real"How losing both parents to cancer shaped his relationship with risk, intuition, and not postponing his lifeYaron's take on AI in the business Why Yaron believes you don't have to sacrifice your wellbeing to build something great — and what changed his mindsetWhether you're building a company, rebuilding your health, or trying to figure out how to do everything - this episode will be your inspiration, breaking many limiting beliefs and fears that are stopping you from Doing Something Great with every day of your life.Tune in, get inspired - Do Something Great!About Yaron AssabiYaron Assabi is the Founder and Group CEO of Digital Solutions Group (DSG), a South African-founded, globally active group of seven specialist digital businesses spanning customer experience, digital marketing, telecoms, cybersecurity, data and AI, and digital commerce. Since founding the company in 1998 as one of South Africa's first e-commerce ventures, Yaron has grown DSG into a 600+ person group serving 60+ enterprise brands across Africa, the Middle East and the UK, with clients including Nando's, KFC, DStv, Coca-Cola and Unilever. He built and launched one of the world's first mobile commerce transactions in 2000, served as ICT strategist for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and designed the 46664 global HIV/AIDS awareness campaign technology. A 3-time cancer survivor who chose to heal through lifestyle transformation rather than chemotherapy, Yaron also founded Chilled, a plant-based wellness and lifestyle brand born from his own recovery journey. Send us Fan MailEvery spirits brand today is chasing the same elusive prize: two generations who don't drink the way the ones before them did, and who are quietly rewriting the rules of when, why, and what they reach for. Few people are tracking that shift more closely than Dave Williams and Erica Duecy. Dave, President of BUMP Williams Consulting, has spent a decade turning beverage-alcohol data into strategy for suppliers, distributors, and retailers navigating a changing consumer base. Erica, founder of Business of Drinks and host of the podcast of the same name, has built her career translating consumer behavior into brand strategy for some of the best-known names in wine and spirits. In this episode, recorded live at Bar Convent Brooklyn as Part 1 of our two-part series "Cracking the Generational Code," Dave and Erica break down what's actually driving Gen Z and Millennial spirits consumption, from why nearly half of Gen Z abstains entirely yet still drinks spirits as often as Millennials do, to why Millennials, now the industry's highest-value buyer, are still being marketed as "young drinkers." We explore how moderation is reshaping loyalty rather than ending it, why wellness has become a purchase filter even for alcohol, how RTDs are winning by removing friction from the decision, and why the sale is often won or lost long before a shopper ever reaches the shelf.Park Street Imports is the back-office and importing solution for alcoholic beverage brands launching and scaling in the U.S. market.Featured Guests:Dave Williams, President, BUMP Williams ConsultingErica Duecy, Founder, Business of DrinksMentioned in the Episode:Bump Williams ConsultingThe Business of DrinksWant to stay in the know about new episodes from the podcast? A consultation can feel great right up until the person decides not to move forward. When that happens once, it can be disappointing. When it happens several times in a row, it can leave even an experienced coach wondering what changed, what they did wrong, or whether they are as good at this as they thought they were. In this episode of THE Financial Coaches Podcast, Cody shares what happened when a stretch of seven or eight new clients was followed by five consecutive noes. Maria helps him look beneath the rejection and recognize how easily coaches can make both the yeses and the noes about themselves. When we take too much credit for a client's decision to move forward, we may also accept too much responsibility when another person chooses not to. The conversation explores why a potential client's no may have more to do with their own fear, uncertainty, or belief in what is possible than with the coach sitting across from them. Maria and Cody also talk about remaining genuinely helpful without becoming attached to the outcome, remembering that the coach is not the product, and responding to success and disappointment with gratitude and grace. Rejection is part of building a coaching practice. It may still hurt, but it does not have to define your ability, your value, or what happens next.

Back in episode 154/155, JP told us about her marriage to a man she now simply calls "exhole." We left that story mid-sentence — she was still deep in the trenches of her divorce, and we promised to bring her back once it was over. It's over now.But "over" doesn't mean what you'd think. What follows is a year-long descent into a family court system that JP says is built to protect abusers, not survivors — and a masterclass in exactly how far a narcissist will go to win.⚖️ A biased judge who tells the victim to pay HER abuser

SHOW NOTES In this episode, Mike and I discussed: How AI image editing helps his team solve real client challenges — from removing private artwork and family photos before sharing project images, to swapping out unlicensed content on screens. How he uses simple ChatGPT prompts to turn a designer's scale elevation drawing into side-by-side visuals, helping clients make decisions faster and reducing costly change-orders after installation. And how Bethesda Systems is building an AI culture from the ground up, including weekly leadership meetings with hands-on AI demos and shared licenses across the team. What makes this conversation so valuable is that Mike doesn't call himself an AI expert — and that's exactly the point. He's a business owner who started with simple experiments and turned them into practical tools that improve margins and client communication. Whether you're already experimenting with AI or just trying to understand where to begin, you're going to get a lot of value from this conversation. So settle in and enjoy my conversation with Mike Wilson. Let's get started! One of the first questions many financial coaches wrestle with is also one of the hardest: How can I charge people for coaching when they are already struggling with money? That question can lead coaches to believe they must choose between the people they genuinely want to serve and the clients who appear most able to pay. But building a practice around the wrong people simply because they seem more profitable can create a business that feels disconnected from the coach—and from the clients they are trying to help. In this Financial Coaches Classic, Maria and Cody talk about why a sustainable coaching practice begins with being honest about who you want to serve and the kind of work you want to do. Cody shares what his first year in coaching actually looked like, why choosing the quickest path to revenue may not create lasting success, and how financial coaching can become an investment that helps clients move forward rather than another expense holding them back. They also explore practical ways to make coaching accessible without undervaluing the work, including group programs, assistant coaches, church partnerships, employer-sponsored coaching, and other creative arrangements. You do not necessarily have to abandon the people you care about serving in order to build a viable practice. You may need patience, clarity, and creativity—but those are very different from compromise.
