This week on Really Entertaining A-list B-movies:Bob Odenkirk (w/ Resting Chuck Norris Face) is an unremarkable family man—or so everyone thinks. After a home invasion leaves him humiliated, his buried skills as a lethal former government operative resurface with a vengeance. What follows is a bone-crunching, darkly funny rampage through the criminal underworld, featuring stolen kitty bracelets, bus fights that feel like a stuntman's dream, and a finale that turns suburban booby traps into mobster catchers. Directed by Ilya Naishuller, with Christopher Lloyd stealing scenes as Hutch's gun-happy dad, this is an overly efficient action flick that asks: what if John Wick had a mortgage?Subscribe to Great Bad Movies wherever you listen to podcastsMore Great Bad Movies online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteYouTubeEmail us at greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. From the people behind John Wick! Nobody Reaction & Review w/ Aaron Alexander & Roxy Striar, they react to the explosive action thriller directed by Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry) and written by Derek Kolstad (John Wick). Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad) stars as Hutch Mansell, an underestimated suburban dad whose suppressed past as a deadly government “auditor” resurfaces after a home invasion pushes him over the edge. Co-starring Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, Wonder Woman) as Hutch's wife Becca, Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future trilogy, Taxi) as his trigger-happy father David, RZA (American Gangster, The Man with the Iron Fists) as his resourceful half-brother Harry, and Aleksei Serebryakov (Leviathan, McMafia) as ruthless Russian mob boss Yulian Kuznetsov. Lock, load, and prepare for a ballistic ride. This week, the Born to Watch crew take on the movie that brought Keanu Reeves roaring back into the action spotlight and set a new standard for gun-fu carnage with their John Wick (2014) Review.Whitey, G Man, Damo, and returning guest Bones gather in the "Red Circle Russian Baths" to break down this lean, mean revenge machine. The premise is simple: they killed his puppy, they stole his car, and now John Wick is going to kill absolutely everyone. What follows is 101 minutes of exquisitely choreographed violence, ruthless headshots, and underworld world-building that's as fascinating as it is stylish. The boys kick things off with an "overs and unders" rewatch count, Bones leading the charge with a double-digit tally, Damo admitting he was late to the Wick party, and G Man revealing this was only his second full viewing. Whitey takes us back to his last days running a video shop in 2014, when he first discovered the movie on DVD and immediately knew it was something special. From there, it's a high-calibre conversation covering the sequels (John Wick 2 gets big love, John Wick 3 cops a length warning, and John Wick 4 is called out for testing bladders at nearly three hours). They crunch the numbers on the original film's body count, 84 kills for Wick alone, and swap favourite takedowns, from the Red Circle massacre to the infamous knife-to-the-chest finisher. But John Wick isn't just about spraying bullets. The team dive into what makes it different: the cool, calculated underworld mythology of The Continental, the gold coin economy, and the assassin's code that adds sophistication to the chaos. They agree that the "no business on Continental grounds" rule is a masterstroke, and that Ian McShane's Winston brings the perfect mix of charm and menace.Keanu Reeves' career gets its own spotlight, with nods to Point Break, Speed, The Matrix, and even the roles he almost played (Platoon, Starship Troopers). Supporting cast members also get their flowers: Michael Nyqvist's quietly menacing Viggo, Alfie Allen's punchable rich-kid villainy, Willem Dafoe's sniper guardian angel, and a surprise cameo from wrestling giant Kevin Nash.In true Born to Watch fashion, the chat spirals into side quests: hot takes on Taken's influence on modern revenge films, debates over whether Russians are cinema's ultimate gangsters, and an oddly passionate discussion on Japanese onsens and Russian bathhouses (including the etiquette of washing before soaking with strangers). They also unpack critical reception, David Stratton's dismissive "all gun battles" take versus The New York Times' praise for its style, wit, and box office performance, noting how word of mouth turned a modest $86 million return into the launchpad for a billion-dollar franchise.Signature segments return in force:Hit, Sleeper, Dud, Swinger – with Interstellar and Edge of Tomorrow as hits, Frank as the sleeper, Dumb and Dumber To as the dud, and Pompeii roasted as a "swinger" that belongs in cinematic ash.Snobs Report Special – veering gloriously off-topic to Alexandra Daddario's career-making scene in True Detective.Question Time – covering everything from the realism of Wick's "magic pills" to whether Iosef's death was anticlimactic, and what exactly makes a headshot so satisfying.Through it all, the crew's affection for John Wick is undeniable. They celebrate its stripped-back storytelling, grounded stunt work, and unrelenting pace, while acknowledging its few stumbles. It's the perfect mix of 80s-style simplicity and modern fight choreography, proof that a revenge story, told well, never goes out of style. If you're a fan of tight, furious action films with a killer lead, a colourful rogues' gallery, and a fictional criminal underworld you want to explore (but not live in), this is the Born to Watch episode for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs John Wick the best modern action franchise or just a stylish headshot marathon?Which kill in the Red Circle nightclub is your all-time favourite? Is killing the puppy the single most effective way to make an audience cheer for revenge?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show!Listen to the full episode now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods.#JohnWick #KeanuReeves #MoviePodcast #ActionMovies #BornToWatch #GunFu #RevengeMovies #CultAction #FilmReview #PopCulture #borntowatchpodcast

August 3, 2025Today's Reading: Luke 12:13-21Daily Lectionary: 1 Samuel 17:48-18:9; Acts 27:9-26“And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.” (1 Samuel 17:49)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. When we picture God going into his armory to find the right weapons to fight for and rescue his people, we might picture something like John Wick's request for guns…lots and lots of guns—or Iron Man climbing into the Hulkbuster or Batman going into the Batcave and hopping into the Batwing. But God's weaponry quite often looks different than how we would imagine it, and his way of fighting his enemies is even more unexpected. The story of David is a classic example. Saul's men try to outfit him with the latest armor, sword, and shield like he's gearing up to play Call of Duty. But God has something better in mind. Rocks. That's right. David takes five smooth stones and his sling onto the battlefield where Goliath rages, taunts, and defies God. But no sooner does Goliath, the enemy of God's people, issue a challenge than God throws down a gauntlet of his own, launched straight from the arm of his servant, David. That's one small stone for David, one giant slayed by a stone to the noggin. This isn't the last time God would defeat his enemies with unlikely weaponry, nor is it the last time God would use a rock to hurl defeat at his enemies. David's Son and David's Lord, Jesus, works with the same battle tactic in the New Testament as he did in the Old. He wraps himself not in the finest bronze armor, but in human flesh. He wields the sword of his word against Satan in the wilderness. Then, in the climactic battle on Golgotha, he slays the dragon, not with five stones, but with wood and nail and blood and death. Jesus overcomes death by death, letting death overcome him. Jesus battles and wins the victory over our sin by becoming sin for us. Jesus, the Son of David, slays Goliath by hurling the stone of his empty tomb wide open in resurrected victory three days later. But the Lord doesn't stop there. He marches straight into this fallen world to arm you for your daily battle against the devil, the world, and your sinful flesh. And once again, he equips you with the most unlikely, yet the most powerful of weapons, his word, his robe of righteousness, his forgiveness, Baptism, and Body and Blood. And in these Gifts, given to you by our Lord and Commander-in-Chief of the heavenly armies, you stand firm and victorious.  In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Amen, Lord Jesus, grant our prayer; Great Captain now Thine arm make bare, Fight for us once again! So shall Thy saints and martyrs raise A mighty chorus to Thy praise Forevermore Amen. (LSB 666:4)Rev. Samuel Schuldheisz, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Milton, WA.Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Lackey is the pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Vine Grove, KY.Step back in time to the late Reformation and learn about a divisive yet inspirational figure: Matthias Flacius Illyricus. Stacey hit a bit of a reading slump while Rebecca spiraled into a whirlwind of short stories, romance novels, and a five-star reading high that knocked her into next month. In this episode, we're recapping all the reads from July: the sweet, the swoony, the mysterious, and the murdery (yep). We're also diving deep into our featured read, Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry, which had us unpacking grief, gossip, secret NDAs, and sisters (both fictional and very real—hi!). Let's get into it:What We Read in July:Stacey's Stack (3 Books)*

In this episode, we take a closer look at Nobody (2021), the high-octane action thriller that marks a striking departure for actor Bob Odenkirk. Known primarily for his work in comedy and drama, Odenkirk delivers a compelling and unexpected performance as Hutch Mansell, an unassuming family man whose quiet life belies a dangerous and highly trained past. Special attention is given to Odenkirk's physical and emotional transformation, as well as the film's place within the broader context of the modern action genre, following in the footsteps of titles like John Wick while establishing its own distinct voice. On today's episode  I speak about enjoying myself recording episodes with my family and i jump into talking about my birthday celebration. I talk about seeing my fellow crabs living it up and me wanting to do the same. I also came to the realization that i don't like being the center of attention. Like people think 1+2= talks to me, it does not mean that lol but i still mess with y'all. Then i talk about the Breakfast club vs streamers, I didn't mind it but these young kids are in a tizzy over it and it is fun to watch.CRAZY TRAIN - OZZY OSBOURNELET'S GO - TRICK DADDY(00:00 - 23:26)I have a new not so new segment which is about movie reviews and spoilers. This week i speak about  “ SUPERMAN 2025” and this movie wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, it was pretty good. When i saw the trailer i was intrigued because it was showing him injured, so i believed there was something else going on but no the Director wanted to make him somewhat relatable. Hated that part, but besides that it was a good film. It's basically trying to show the humanity of Superman, but also throwing in a John Wick moment which is what seems to be the new go to. In general, this was a good watch and the kids will love it too, so it is not only for adults. (23:27 - 35:35)I then jump into The Cool Report  where I give praise to the JBP for his interview with the times, Where we discover he makes 20 million a year and that is amazing for an independent artist. Most people think he is not, but he totally is and this is  huge for everyone across  the podcast universe. He let us know we don't need to take there ad sponsors, you don't have to give up working rights when signing a deal, and that your work stays your work, I love it. From there we go into the Stephen Colbert cancellation and people don't think this is a big thing, but this is the sign of bigger rights to be taken away from us, this is bigger than celebrities. We then jump into the William McNeil Jr case and how it was abuse of force, now now now i am not sating that the gentleman was 100 percent in the right, but one does not lead to the other if one was not profiled, tune into see what I had to say about this outcome.(35:36 - 56:47)We then step into a segment where the listeners ask me 3 questions about myself or just randomness. Like a character telling me they did not get my mix from last week, so I gave them a break down personally for them, because it was not tocking for them, is I dropped the science. Another character wanted to know what were my birthday goals and i don't know, not really concerned over them. One also wanted to know if i were stuck on a island what would I bring with me, and i feel like everyone always answer this question wrong, they bring things that can't help them. (55:48 - 01:05:34)Then we have 2 fans ask us a questions for PTL where we get asked the tough questions where we place ourselves in their shoes. A lover wants to know why their partner has so much low self esteem, and keeps trying to break up with him. He is so flabbergasted with the idea of a break up, that he chalks it up to low self esteem on her end, it was hilarious. Another lover wants to know if getting matching tattoos 6 months in is a lot for the beginning stage, i think not, go for it buddy. Get his and hers tattoos to show it's real.(01:05:35 - 01:13:05)THE FINI give bonus content because an error was made on my end and i forgot to hit record on the card but i was able to clean up audio and here we're .I give thank to everyone that shows us love and wish y'all the best on the journey called life.(01:13:06 - 01:15:27)Please continue to like, share, comment and subscribe.PEACE OUT!!!! For questions to be answered on Part time lover please email @nospecialcharacterspod@gmail.comTIME CODEINTRO/ WHAT'S NEW - 00:00MOVIE REVIEW - 23:27THE COOL REPORT - 35:36ASK ME A QUESTION - 55:48PART TIME LOVER - 01:05:35OUTRO - 01:13:06

Cinematographer Romain Lacourbas returns to Below the Line to talk about crafting Ballerina, the latest stylish installment in the John Wick universe. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Cinematographer Romain Lacourbas to discuss his visual approach to Ballerina, from the film's sweeping Prague exteriors to its tightly choreographed fight scenes. Romain breaks down his collaboration with Director Len Wiseman, the decision to shoot single-camera action, and the creative problem-solving behind some of the film's most explosive moments. We cover: Building trust with Len Wiseman — and how the director's homemade pre-vis videos helped shape their collaboration Adapting the look of John Wick to a new city — with its own palette and texture Leveraging Alexa 35 cameras and Hawk Class-X anamorphic lenses to add volume and texture — a deliberate choice to highlight Philip Ivey's distinctive production design Planning and executing long-take action — including that grenade-filled basement sequence Why most stunt scenes were shot with a single camera — and how that impacted timing, blocking, and performance Leaning into practical effects, from real explosions to blood rigs and rain-slicked streets Capturing Hallstatt's natural beauty — even on a tight shooting schedule  Romain also reflects on the freedom he had as a DP, his continued partnership with Camera Operator James Frater, and how working with a detail-driven director made the difference.

Quick recap: Zia says not to trust Amos, and then guess who magically appears? Sadie is emotional about Bast's sacrifice, so it's good Carter handled that last chapter. Amos's look is not what Karen imagined. Set used Amos like a statue in a garden for the demons' amusement. Is Set the ultimate mastermind? or did Amos give him the slip? Best place to hide is definitely in a government missle-testing range. Let's hope Amos is wrong and Bast will be back sooner rather than later. Sadie has already made SO MANY SACRIFICES! Ba meet Geb. We swoon a little over Geb's heart pocket. What was with that cryptic message, Geb?! Favorite scenes and favorite lines. Chapter 32: Let's see where we stand. Muffin is giving every cat in this scene. Rick to readers: "We are not pulling a John Wick here." They can't trust Amos enough to tell him the plan, but they can definitely use his boat. Time to eat some yummy food in Las Cruces-Messilla. Just as Zia is defending Desjardins' allegiance against Set, he shows up and sticks to his script. Amos using storm magic?! Talk about a red flag. Zia's ultra-powerful column of fire proves she is all in with Sadie & Carter. Desjardins gets desperate... and summons Sekhmet! Favorite scenes and favorite lines. Do you ever talk about your favorite things through top 5 lists? Like, you have your top 5 tv shows, or top 5 songs, etc. No? Just me? Cool. When I look back at my favorite movies and soundtracks, you'll find The Crow in the top 5 of both categories. The film still makes me feel emotions I didn't think possible. It's such a heavy film to me even 31 years after its release. Maybe watching it brings back grief from the loss of Brandon Lee. Or maybe The Crow is packed with emotional content and themes. To this day I still tear up at one particular moment in the film (which we discuss in the podcast). What's wrong with me?In the latest installment of the Pop Classics series, Alisha Mughal has taken on the task of taking us on a deep dive of the classic film. Her book 'It Can't Rain All The Time' is available now and I think any movie fan will enjoy it.In this episode we discuss the history and folklore about The Crow, how you can find similarities with the John Wick universe, how incredible Brandon Lee truly was and so much more.

Join Opie and the crew live from Gebhards Beer Culture for a wild ride of tangents and laughs! From pitbull attacks sparking heated debates to John Wick and a dreamy-eyed marine showing up at the bar, this episode dives into everything from cold plunges to 1864 baseball with lemon peel balls. Expect rants about Broadway musicals, questionable dolphin swims, and a questionable business idea called "Only Pans." Plus, hear about Jaws' accidental genius, a pig roast for Vietnam vets, and why you should never trust a dolphin or a therapist. It's unfiltered, unhinged, and unmistakably Opie Radio.
