In this episode of "Cocoon Conversations" on the Career Flipper podcast, I, Jenny Dempsey, take you along on my career journey. This year, I've committed to opening up about my own career flip, just as I encourage my guests to do. So here we are, in May 2025, and I can hardly believe it's been four months since I started my current day job. It feels surreal to say that, especially considering I was laid off for two years before this.During this time, I've been balancing my full-time job with furniture restoration on the side, dedicating Sundays to it, and squeezing in podcasting and all the related tasks whenever I can. If that sounds overwhelming, it is! Life can be a juggling act, and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. Scheduling time with friends often feels like a game of Tetris, as we all navigate our busy lives.I've always been the type of person who thrives on variety. I'm the one multitasking—doing laundry while putting away dishes, preparing to record a podcast, creating social media content for my furniture flipping page, and making sure my dog, Dwight, gets outside for a potty break. My brain has always thrived on this mix of activities, and I've been like this for as long as I can remember.Looking back, I've come to realize something significant. For a long time, I believed that work—capital W work—was my identity. I thought it was the only thing I was good at. I didn't believe in taking vacations; if I did, I'd bring my laptop along and continue working. I even had a panic attack in front of a customer service team I was managing because I was so consumed by my job. I poured everything into my work, only to learn the hard way that companies would replace me in an instant. When I was laid off and struggled to find a new job for two years, I was left questioning my identity. Who was I if I wasn't working?I dive into this and more in the episode! Episode summary:In this episode of OnBase, host Chris Moody sits down with Trent Talbert to dissect the 2025 B2B marketing landscape—from evolving ABM strategies to the real reason high-growth companies are struggling despite bigger budgets. Trent shares insights from the newly released AMP25 survey and offers sharp, data-backed guidance on where modern marketers should double down and what they should ditch. You'll hear why personalization is still broken in most orgs, how bold messaging can break through the noise, and why “do more with less” is a dangerous myth. Packed with practical wisdom and a few mic-drop moments, this episode is a must-listen for any B2B marketer looking to elevate their strategy this year.Key TakeawaysOptimism in Goals: A significant majority (80%) of B2B tech marketers are optimistic about achieving their goals this year. Growth Challenges: Faster-growing companies often face more challenges, requiring a broader approach to marketing. ABM and Personalization: Organizational silos can hinder effective ABM and personalization. Emerging brands have an advantage in implementing these strategies due to their lack of legacy systems. Standing Out: Brands can capture attention through bold, creative, and emotionally resonant messaging that balances rational appeals. Customer Focus: There's a growing emphasis on customer loyalty, lifetime value, and downstream engagement, including onboarding and renewals. Budget Trends: Most budgets are flat or increasing, but companies are urged to choose either a cost-reduction or growth strategy. Tactic Stability: The top six marketing tactics have remained consistent, highlighting the importance of executing fundamentals well and creating a coherent customer experience across channels. In this episode of the Contractor Growth Network podcast, Logan Shinholser talks with Todd Dawalt, founder of Construction Leading Edge and host of The Construction Leading Edge Podcast. Together, they dive into the dangerous trap many contractors fall into, doing “just enough to start” (JETS)—and why that mentality holds businesses back from sustainable growth. Todd shares how building robust pre-construction systems, documenting processes, and creating real clarity in communication can make the difference between chaos and control on a jobsite. Drawing from his years of coaching and consulting with construction companies, Todd walks through tactical strategies for increasing profitability and how simple documentation can solve major business problems. Whether you're a one-man band or running a team of 100, this episode is packed with insights that will help you stop winging it and start winning. Key Takeaways The JETS Mentality is Holding You Back Doing “just enough to start” creates costly mistakes and jobsite chaos. Companies need to operate with a mindset of clarity, not improvisation. Documented Systems Drive Profitability Contractors often mistake “it's in my head” for a system. Writing things down can solve 80% of common construction business problems. Pre-Construction is Where the Money Is Made Profits are built (or lost) before the job even begins. Pre-construction systems reduce change orders, stress, and delays. Turn Chaos into Predictability Without structure, your team will make up their own rules. Checklists, job books, and templates create consistent results. Leadership Isn't About Hustle—It's About Systems Business owners need to graduate from “doer” to “leader.” Building systems empowers your team and removes dependency on you. Memorable Quotes “Chaos is expensive—clarity is profitable.” “You don't rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.” “Documenting your process is the cheapest, fastest way to fix most of your problems.” Actionable Advice Start with one system. Pick one process you repeat often and document it. Replace tribal knowledge. Get everything out of your head and onto paper. Build a job book. Give your team a standard package of information for every job. Focus on pre-construction. Nail the planning phase before picking up a hammer. Lead with clarity. Create systems that enable your team to win without you.

This Podcast Is Episode 622, And It's About Identifying Gaps To Improve Your Construction Business Marketing Visibility is essential for your handyman or contracting business for several key reasons. Effective marketing helps your company stand out in a competitive market, and promoting your services can help you reach a wider audience and become known in your community. Potential customers are more likely to hire someone they have heard about or seen advertised. This credibility is crucial for a service-based business like yours, where customers rely on reputation. Sharing content like the project "before and after," tips, and how-to guides can demonstrate your expertise and help you connect with your target audience. Many construction businesses are vying for the same residents and homeowners, but active marketing helps you stay relevant, ensuring your company remains top-of-mind for potential clients. Remember that adaptability is also essential when assessing gaps in your construction marketing. The marketplace is continually evolving, so adjust your strategies according to changing consumer needs, trends, or new services you may offer. Don't have a whole marketing team? Invest your time and resources wisely. Consider the following areas first: ask yourself these questions, and start tracking and analyzing your results to see what's working and what isn't. 1. Am I identifying and understanding my target audience? If your messaging doesn't resonate with your ideal clients, it might not be effective. 2. Is my website optimized for search engines, mobile-friendly, and up-to-date? A lack of an engaging online presence can significantly limit your reach. 3. Am I consistently creating and sharing valuable content that showcases my expertise? Gaps in content marketing can lead to missed opportunities for engagement and brand building. 4. Am I actively engaging with my audience on social media platforms? If you're not leveraging these channels effectively, you may be missing out on building relationships and community. 5. Are my methods for generating leads diversified? Relying too heavily on one method can leave you vulnerable if that channel dries up. 6. Am I actively seeking and promoting customer testimonials? A lack of social proof can hinder potential clients' trust in your services. 7. Am I attending industry events or networking with other professionals? This can be crucial for building connections and referrals. 8. Am I tracking my marketing efforts effectively? Without analysis, it's challenging to determine what's working and what needs improvement. By identifying and addressing these gaps, you can develop a more robust construction marketing strategy and build a better foundation of systems and processes that can drive better results. However, time constraints make it challenging to market your services, especially when you're a one-person company. Many contractors are directly involved in on-site operations, leading to long hours and physical exhaustion. As a result, marketing tasks often get pushed aside. Also, not everyone has the skills to create effective strategies, understand digital tools, or navigate social media. If you're still following along, the good news is that you've already taken the initiative. Answering the questions earlier is an excellent start. If you haven't done so, learn the marketing basics relevant to your construction business. Online courses and resources can provide valuable insights without requiring extensive time commitments. First, establish specific, measurable marketing goals to help prioritize efforts. Having a clear focus can streamline decision-making and resource allocation. Since you might need to invest in professional help in these key areas and high-impact tasks, check which ones you can do and the ones that you need to outsource: 1. Brand Development Establishing a strong brand identity is vital. You need a compelling logo, a brand messaging, and a consistent visual presence across all marketing materials. 2. Website Optimization Many solo construction business owners lack a professional, user-friendly website. Assistance in designing and optimizing a website for SEO can help your website attract more visitors and convert them into leads. 3. Social Media Strategy Navigating social media platforms can be overwhelming. You may need help defining your target audience, choosing the right platforms, and creating engaging content that resonates with your potential clients. 4. Content Marketing Creating informative blog posts, videos, and case studies that showcase expertise can be challenging. You may require support generating relevant content highlighting your projects and industry knowledge. 5. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Understanding how to rank higher in search engine results is crucial. Assistance with local SEO strategies to ensure you appear in searches within your service areas will do wonders for your marketing. 6. Lead Generation Finding effective ways to generate high-quality leads can be difficult. Look for guidance on using online advertising, networking events, and referrals to attract new clients. 7. Email Marketing Developing an email marketing strategy to stay in touch with past clients and nurture leads is often overlooked. Consider creating effective email campaigns that engage your audience and drive repeat business. 8. Reputation Management Building and maintaining a positive reputation is essential. You may need help managing online reviews, responding to feedback, and leveraging testimonials to build trust with potential clients. 9. Competitive Analysis Understanding the competitive landscape helps contractors like you with positioning. Analyzing competitors' marketing strategies to identify opportunities and threats will set you apart and drive your construction business forward. 10. Networking and Partnerships Collaborating with other industry professionals can lead to new opportunities. For mutual referrals, you may require support building relationships with suppliers, architects, or real estate agents. What you can do right now? Start small. Implement small marketing initiatives that require minimal time and resources but can still deliver results—for example, posting a project update on social media or scheduling marketing activities in advance using a content calendar. This helps keep marketing efforts organized and ensures content is consistently shared. Final thoughts Addressing these gaps can enhance your visibility, attract new clients, and ultimately grow your business. Rather than spreading resources too thin, focus on marketing activities that yield the highest returns, such as building a strong online presence or generating referral networks. Invest in professional help. If budget allows, consider hiring freelancers or marketing agencies to handle tasks like website design, SEO, or social media management. Ever wished you could zip back in time and whisper some much-needed advice into the ear of your past self? It could have saved so much time and heartache! As you can imagine, there have been many lessons I've learned over the past eight years since I started my coaching business, and today I'm sharing with you the top 8! This story begins back in 2017, after the birth of my daughter, when I made a promise to myself that I would have a business by the time my maternity leave was finished. Yep - building a business with a brand-new baby in tow and an active 3 year old tearing around the house! That was a challenge - and one I was determined to conquer. My aim was clear: craft a business that allowed me to break free from the corporate grind, enjoy time with my kids, travel whenever I wanted and make an impact by helping others. Even with 20 years of marketing and brand building behind me, it was not the easy path I had imagined! I found myself on the entrepreneurial rollercoaster and had my fair share of fails as well as some incredible wins. There's even a year when we took the kids out of school and went caravanning around Australia for 9 months, seeing the most remote and beautiful parts of the country - and my business grew while I was snorkelling and sipping wine at gorgeous vineyards. Looking back, I wish there were things I could have discovered sooner. I'm sharing just a snapshot of my top lessons with you here in this episode, in the hope that you don't have to live through some of the experiences I did to learn them! Here's a sneak peek into the gems we explore in this episode: Why is entrepreneurship a journey of personal development? I explore how becoming your own boss is a wake-up call to personal growth and self-discovery. What could you be doing wrong with your offer? Learn the vital lesson that a phenomenal service doesn't sell itself if no one wants it. How crucial is positioning yourself as an expert? Uncover why without clear expertise in a niche, you're missing out on potential clients who simply can't see you. Value – what are you really worth? I discuss how undervaluing your services impacts not only your income but also your client relationships. And finally, what's the truth about overnight success? Spoiler: success doesn't pop up overnight, so let's bust that myth and learn why patience really is a virtue. So if you're ready to skip a few steps on your own path and dig into lessons that could accelerate your journey, take a listen! Let me know which ones resonated with you most! Dr. Anne Truong and Dr. Mike Woo-Ming discuss the importance of income diversification for physicians, highlighting how traditional medical careers often lead to burnout due to high workloads and limited fulfillment. They emphasize the need for doctors to work smarter, not harder. They both share their rigour and transitioning from conventional medicine practice to entrepreneurship. Dr. Anne Troung shares her realization of the value of working on her business rather than in it, by leveraging systems to create sustainable and scalable income streams. They also stress the importance of investing in oneself, whether through personal development by acquiring new skills like negotiation and marketing, or building revenue-generating assets. Dr. Truong reveals she has 18 income streams, purely derived from her medical expertise, and not stocks nor real estate. They encourage physicians to think beyond clinical work, and leverage their knowledge to create passive income through consulting, speaking or online ventures. Ultimately, the message is one of empowerment, that doctors don't have to stay stuck in a cycle of burnout or "golden handcuffs", but to invest in themselves, explore new opportunities and build systems that work for them. Three Actionable Takeaways Work on your business, and NOT in your business. Build systems and processes that allow it to run without your constant involvement. Systems make for sustainability and enhanced efficiency. DON'T trade time for money Work smarter, not harder! Think of other ways to leverage your medical expertise and generate income outside the consulting room. Self-investment is the highest form of investing. In this episode, Keith Kalfas and Mack explores the challenges and strategies of balancing lawn care and landscaping services. It features a discussion between two lawn care business owners on the benefits and fears of transitioning to landscaping, focusing on how to streamline services and manage both effectively. They discuss how to schedule and price recurring maintenance, charge for additional services like shrub trimming, and ensure steady revenue without overwhelming their small crew. The conversation emphasizes the importance of a consistent, stress-free approach, customer loyalty, and the value of confidence in business operations. They also touch on the influence of sports on handling rejection, the significance of Google for marketing, and the emotional aspects of running a business. Inspirational anecdotes about overcoming challenges and keeping a positive, confident mindset round out the dialogue. " If you don't get on Google, you are shooting yourself in the foot. You're really killing yourself. If you talk confidently, then you can charge anything." - Mack Topics Covered: Lawn Care vs. Landscaping: Can You Do Both? Transitioning and Structuring Services Pricing and Customer Management The Power of Confidence in Business Marketing and Reputation Handling Challenges and Embracing Company Culture Community and Personal Growth Key Takeaways Team Resilience and Positivity: The ability to laugh about difficult situations, such as being soaked after a rainstorm, indicates a positive and resilient attitude among team members. This kind of environment can foster a supportive and resilient workforce. Emotional Fulfillment: Working together in demanding conditions can lead to emotional fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment. The hardships shared build stronger connections, making the work more than just a job but an enriching experience. Shared Experiences Foster Trust: Trust is built through shared experiences and overcoming obstacles together. This cultural aspect underlines the depth of connections formed within the team. Michael Brumbaugh, a native of Harborcreek, Pennsylvania, exemplifies a life of service, leadership, and unwavering faith. Growing up, Michael spent 14 years playing competitive ice hockey, culminating in reaching the elite AAA level with the Erie Travel Hockey League. After graduating from high school in 2000, he briefly pursued a degree in criminal justice at Mercyhurst College Northeast. However, he soon felt a greater calling and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 2001, marking the start of an exceptional military service. Michael completed bootcamp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and the Infantry Training Battalion in North Carolina before joining Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. His military service included a deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (SOC) in 2002 and two combat deployments to Iraq in 2003 and Al Fallujah in 2004, where he served as an operations specialist. Following his honorable discharge in 2005, Michael pursued higher education, earning an Associate's Degree in Business Marketing and Management from Tri-State Business Institute. In late 2005, Michael experienced a spiritual transformation, accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a Weekend to Remember event by FamilyLife. He publicly affirmed his faith through baptism in 2006 at Erie First Assembly of God in Erie, Pennsylvania. That same year, on May 27, 2006, Michael married Liz (Sabulsky), committing to build a Christ-centered family. The couple welcomed their first child, Caleb, in Pennsylvania. In January 2009, the Brumbaugh family relocated to Colorado, where Michael began working for the Colorado State Department of Corrections. In October 2010, he transitioned to the U.S. Department of Justice and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science, graduating summa cum laude from Colorado State University. During this time, the family welcomed their second child, Paige, further enriching their lives. Michael now serves with the Department of Homeland Security, where he has made a significant impact through his dedication and expertise. In 2021, Michael and his family became active members of Brave Church in Colorado. His passion for serving God and others flourished as he stepped into roles such as Corps Director, a member of the Emergency Response Team, and currently as a Shepherding Elder. He also leads a weekly men's Bible study at his home, affectionately called "Tun Tavern 2," where he mentors and disciples other men in their spiritual journeys. Guided by the principles of serving his family, loving his wife as Christ loved the church, and raising his children in faith, Michael exemplifies a life of purpose and integrity. His unwavering commitment is anchored in the words of Joshua 24:15 (NASB): “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” This verse encapsulates his devotion to living a life that honors God in all aspects. Uncommon Disciple helps everyday men build an eternal legacy. We believe God created men to be leaders of honor, integrity, strength and grace. The probelm is that while many men desire to become all God has called them to be, they burn out along the way. Fathers desire to be godly examples to their children but carry the guilt and shame of their failures. Young singles may be full of vision, but they lack the wisdom and endurance to stay on course to fulfillment. These all-to-common stories are the reason we believe God is calling us to build uncommon disciples. Much more than resources, conferences, and community groups, Uncommon Disciple is a movement of men seeking sustainable life change. Make sure you subscribe and stay tuned to everything we are doing.
