This 2-part podcast was inspired by a Solo Cleaning School Elite member, Dave Reeks. Dave started implementing the ISO Model in early 2022, operating The Finest Clean in South Wales, Australia. I am so proud of his diligence and commitment. Dave has grown from an Initializer to the Stabilizer phase of the ISO Model in 6 months. I recently did an Optimizer's Workshop with him to help him hit his next goal. He is a male solo cleaner like I was and growing quickly with almost 20 house cleaning customers in a short time. Dave recognized the need to keep his body operating at peak performance and wondered if I had any tips for other solo cleaners. Thank you Dave for this question! Yes! I do. I was a solo cleaner from age 28 to 44. There have been seasons of physical domination when I could stay up all night and clean and clean and clean. I have also struggled with fatigue, injury, and chronic disease. Regardless of the season, I had no choice but to keep going... and I did. In this initial episode, we will deconstruct the habits of multiple peak performers from professional sports to learn from them. Then in the second episode, I also will share several keys to solo longevity that I have learned along the way from my triumphs and struggles. I believe this will help all cleaning companies as we all have people cleaning, whether it is us or a team we've hired.Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor. I am sharing what I've personally done for cleaning longevity. See your doctor before making any major changes to your routine. Baseline your level of health now and set goals on where you'd like to go. Use this podcast as a guide.Let's start with an analogy that takes me down vehicle memory lane. The joke in high school was that Ford stood for "fix or repair daily" and "fails on race day". My friends with Hondas boasted on their longevity and reliability. Hondas were the gold standard. My cars from age 16 to now have been in this order: Honda, Ford, Ford, Mitsubishi, Honda, Honda, Honda, Honda, Ford, Honda, Ford. Isn't that funny. I've owned 6 Hondas and 4 Fords. I won't go over every detail on our cars as that is probably boring. I will just say this. All of my cars have been great. I have so many memories from each. But I do generally agree after owning 4 Fords and 8 Hondas (my wife owned 2 Honda Odysseys) that the Hondas are way more reliable and spend less time in the shop. Sure there were some duds. We had an Odyssey that lasted 2 years and needed a new engine at 150,000 miles. We own a Ford Fiesta with 100,000 miles and a Honda Pilot with 140,000 miles and both are running great. But there is not doubt that our Hondas have been cheaper to operate and lasted a lot longer as 5 of the 8 were over 200,000 miles when we got rid of them.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

Let's get started! 00:26 Lois: Hello and welcome to the Oracle University Podcast! I'm Lois Houston, Director of Innovation Programs with Oracle University, and with me is Nikita Abraham, Team Lead: Editorial Services. Nikita: Happy New Year, everyone! Thank you for joining us as we begin a new season of the podcast, this time focused on the basics of MySQL 8.4. If you're a database administrator or want to become one, this is definitely for you. It's also great for developers working with data-driven apps or IT professionals handling MySQL installs, configurations, and support. 01:03 Lois: That's right, Niki. Throughout the season, we'll be delving into MySQL Enterprise Edition and covering a range of topics, including installation, security, backups, and even MySQL HeatWave on Oracle Cloud. Nikita: Today, we're going to discuss the Oracle MySQL ecosystem and its various components. We'll start by covering the fundamentals of MySQL and the different licenses that are available. Then, we'll explore the key tools and features to boost data security and performance. Plus, we'll talk a little bit about MySQL HeatWave, which is the cloud version of MySQL. 01:39 Lois: To take us through all of this, we've got Perside Foster with us today. Perside is a MySQL Principal Solution Engineer at Oracle. Hi Perside! For anyone new to MySQL, can you explain what it is and why it's so widely used? Perside: MySQL is a relational database management system that organizes data into structured tables, rows, and columns for efficient programming and data management. MySQL is transactional by nature. When storing and managing data, actions such as selecting, inserting, updating, or deleting are required. MySQL groups these actions into a transaction. The transaction is saved only if every part completes successfully. 02:29 Lois: Now, how does MySQL work under the hood? Perside: MySQL is a high-performance database that uses its default storage engine, known as InnoDB. InnoDB helps MySQL handle complex operations and large data volumes smoothly. 02:49 Nikita: For the unversed, what are some day-to-day applications of MySQL? How is it used in the real world? Perside: MySQL works well with online transaction processing workloads. It handles transactions quickly and manages large volumes of transaction at once. OLTP, with low latency and high throughput, makes MySQL ideal for high-speed environments like banking or online shopping. MySQL not only stores data but also replicates it from a main server to several replicas. 03:31 Nikita: That's impressive! And what are the benefits of using MySQL? Perside: It improves data availability and load balancing, which is crucial for businesses that need up-to-date information. MySQL replication supports read scale-out by distributing queries across servers, which increases high availability. MySQL is the most popular database on the web. 04:00 Lois: And why is that? What makes it so popular? What sets it apart from the other database management systems? Perside: First, it is a relational database management system that supports SQL. It also works as a document store, enabling the creation of both SQL and NoSQL applications without the need for separate NoSQL databases. Additionally, MySQL offers advanced security features to protect data integrity and privacy. It also uses tablespaces for better disk space management. This gives database administrators total control over their data storage. MySQL is simple, solid in its reliability, and secure by design. It is easy to use and ideal for both beginners and professionals. MySQL is proven at scale by efficiently handling large data volumes and high transaction rates. MySQL is also open source. This means anyone can download and use it for free. Users can modify the MySQL software to meet their needs. However, it is governed by the GNU General Public License, or GPL. GPL outlines specific rules for its use. MySQL offers two major editions. For developers and small teams, the Community Edition is available for free and includes all of the core features needed. For large enterprises, the Commercial Edition provides advanced features, management tools, and dedicated technical support. 05:58 Nikita: Ok. Let's shift focus to licensing. Who is it useful for? Perside: MySQL licensing is essential for independent software vendors. They're called ISVs. And original manufacturers, they're called OEMs. This is because these companies often incorporate MySQL code into their software products or hardware system to boost the functionality and performance of their product. MySQL licensing is equally important for value-added resellers. We call those VARs. And also, it's important for other distributors. These groups bundle MySQL with other commercially licensed software to sell as part of their product offering. The GPL v.2 license might suit Open Source projects that distribute their products under that license. 07:02 Lois: But what if some independent software vendors, original manufacturers, or value-add resellers don't want to create Open Source products. They don't want their source to be publicly available and they want to keep it private? What happens then? Perside: This is why Oracle provides a commercial licensing option. This license allows businesses to use MySQL in their products without having to disclose their source code as required by GPL v2. 07:33 Nikita: I want to bring up the robust support services that are available for MySQL Enterprise. What can we expect in terms of support, Perside? Perside: MySQL Enterprise Support provides direct access to the MySQL Support team. This team consists of experienced MySQL developers, who are experts in databases. They understand the issues and challenges their customers face because they, too, have personally tackled these issues and challenges. This support service operates globally and is available in 29 languages. So no matter where customers are located, Oracle Support provides assistance, most likely in their preferred language. MySQL Enterprise Support offers regular updates and hot fixes to ensure that the MySQL customer systems stays current with the latest improvements and security patches. MySQL Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This ensures that whenever there is an issue, Oracle Support can provide the needed help without any delay. There are no restrictions on how many times customers can receive help from the team because MySQL Enterprise Support allows for unlimited incidents. MySQL Enterprise Support goes beyond simply fixing issues. It also offers guidance and advice. Whether customers require assistance with performance tuning or troubleshooting, the team is there to support them every step of the way. 09:27 Lois: Perside, can you walk us through the various tools and advanced features that are available within MySQL? Maybe we could start with MySQL Shell. Perside: MySQL Shell is an integrated client tool used for all MySQL database operations and administrative functions. It's a top choice among MySQL users for its versatility and powerful features. MySQL Shell offers multi-language support for JavaScript, Python, and SQL. These naturally scriptable languages make coding flexible and efficient. They also allow developers to use their preferred programming language for everything, from automating database tasks to writing complex queries. MySQL Shell supports both document and relational models. Whether your project needs the flexibility of NoSQL's document-oriented structures or the structured relationships of traditional SQL tables, MySQL Shell manages these different data types without any problems. Another key feature of MySQL Shell is its full access to both development and administrative APIs. This ability makes it easy to automate complex database operations and do custom development directly from MySQL Shell. MySQL Shell excels at DBA operations. It has extensive tools for database configuration, maintenance, and monitoring. These tools not only improve the efficiency of managing databases, but they also reduce the possibility for human error, making MySQL databases more reliable and easier to manage. 11:37 Nikita: What about the MySQL Server tool? I know that it is the core of the MySQL ecosystem and is available in both the community and commercial editions. But how does it enhance the MySQL experience? Perside: It connects with various devices, applications, and third-party tools to enhance its functionality. The server manages both SQL for structured data and NoSQL for schemaless applications. It has many key components. The parser, which interprets SQL commands. Optimizer, which ensures efficient query execution. And then the queue cache and buffer pools. They reduce disk usage and speed up access. InnoDB, the default storage engine, maintains data integrity and supports robust transaction and recovery mechanism. MySQL is designed for scalability and reliability. With features like replication and clustering, it distributes data, manage more users, and ensure consistent uptime. 13:00 Nikita: What role does MySQL Enterprise Edition play in MySQL server's capabilities? Perside: MySQL Enterprise Edition improves MySQL server by adding a suite of commercial extensions. These exclusive tools and services are designed for enterprise-level deployments and challenging environments. These tools and services include secure online backup. It keeps your data safe with efficient backup solutions. Real-time monitoring provides insight into database performance and health. The seamless integration connects easily with existing infrastructure, improving data flow and operations. Then you have the 24/7 expert support. It offers round the clock assistance to optimize and troubleshoot your databases. 14:04 Lois: That's an extensive list of features. Now, can you explain what MySQL Enterprise plugins are? I know they're specialized extensions that boost the capabilities of MySQL server, tools, and services, but I'd love to know a little more about how they work. Perside: Each plugin serves a specific purpose. Firewall plugin protects against SQL injection by allowing only pre-approved queries. The audit plugin logs database activities, tracking who accesses databases and what they do. Encryption plugin secures data at rest, protecting it from unauthorized access. Then we have the authentication plugin, which integrates with systems like LDAP and Active Directory for control access. Finally, the thread pool plugin optimizes performance in high load situation by effectively controlling how many execution threads are used and how long they run. The plugin and tools are included in the MySQL Enterprise Edition suite. 15:32 Join the Oracle University Learning Community and tap into a vibrant network of over 1 million members, including Oracle experts and fellow learners. Perside: MySQL Enterprise Backup is a powerful tool that offers online, non-blocking backup and recovery. It makes sure databases remain available and performs optimally during the backup process. It also includes advanced features, such as incremental and differential backup. Additionally, MySQL Enterprise Backup supports compression to reduce backups and encryptions to keep data secure. One of the standard capabilities of MySQL Enterprise Backup is its seamless integration with media management software, or MMS. This integration simplifies the process of managing and storing backups, ensuring that data is easily accessible and secure. Then we have the MySQL Workbench Enterprise. It enhances database development and design with robust tools for creating and managing your diagram and ensuring proper documentation. It simplifies data migration with powerful tools that makes it easy to move databases between platforms. For database administration, MySQL Workbench Enterprise offers efficient tools for monitoring, performance tuning, user management, and backup and recovery. MySQL Enterprise Monitor is another tool. It provides real-time MySQL performance and availability monitoring. It helps track database's health and performance. It visually finds and fixes problem queries. This is to make it easy to identify and address performance issues. It offers MySQL best-practice advisors to guide users in maintaining optimal performance and security. Lastly, MySQL Enterprise Monitor is proactive and it provides forecasting. 18:40 Lois: Oh that's really going to help users stay ahead of potential issues. That's fantastic! What about the Oracle Enterprise Manager Plugin for MySQL? Perside: This one offers availability and performance monitoring to make sure MySQL databases are running smoothly and efficiently. It provides configuration monitoring. This is to help keep track of the database settings and configuration. Finally, it collects all available metrics to provide comprehensive insight into the database operation. 19:19 Lois: Are there any tools designed to handle higher loads and improve security? Perside: MySQL Enterprise Thread Pool improves scalability as concurrent connections grows. It makes sure the database can handle increased loads efficiently. MySQL Enterprise Authentication is another tool. This one integrates MySQL with existing security infrastructures. It provides robust security solutions. It supports Linux PAM, LDAP, Windows, Kerberos, and even FIDO for passwordless authentication. 20:02 Nikita: Do any tools offer benefits like customized logging, data protection, database security? Perside: The MySQL Enterprise Audit provides out-of-the-box logging of connections, logins, and queries in XML or JSON format. It also offers simple to fine-grained policies for filtering and log rotation. This is to ensure comprehensive and customizable logging. MySQL Enterprise Firewall detects and blocks out of policy database transactions. This is to protect your data from unauthorized access and activities. We also have MySQL Enterprise Asymmetric Encryption. It uses MySQL encryption libraries for key management signing and verifying data. It ensures data stays secure during handling. MySQL Transparent Data Encryption, another tool, provides data-at-rest encryption within the database. The Master Key is stored outside of the database in a KMIP 1.1-compliant Key Vault. That is to improve database security. Finally, MySQL Enterprise Masking offers masking capabilities, including string masking and dictionary replacement. Coach Josh and I use Marco Polo to communicate during the week. He allows me to send questions as I have them. He listens and responds when he gets the chance. I'm very grateful to have Josh Melton in my corner as we grow C3 to the next level in 2023, which is to add the second building block and earn over $100,000 income from the cleaning business. Josh and I had an exchange on November 8th and 9th of 2022 that was so interesting to me. I've never heard it talked about before in the cleaning groups or other podcasts. I had to cover it here.Cleaning is a business, but a business is not merely a ledger with a list of transactions. It's easy to pull up a profit and loss report and see all of the income and expense transactions. It's easy to see the text and numbers printed on the screen or page and assume you're looking at the cleaning business. I don't believe a business merely consists of transactions. A business is relationships. A cleaning business is a group of humans cleaning for other humans, all of which have personalities, beliefs, families, interests. It's easy to measure a business in transactions. That's what our accountants do. It's not easy to measure the relational strength of our business.Josh poses an interesting point in his Marco Polo to me. "I believe that you can trust someone that you don't respect. But I don't believe you can respect someone you don't trust." I agree with him. I can think of people right now that I could allow into my house around my family, but I don't respect them. Therefore, respect is greater than trust. How do you earn trust? I've talked about this a ton. On the "Optimizer's Workshop with Dave Reeks", I defined the 3 C's to build trust as a cleaner. You've got to have excellent character and be the type of person that others can trust. You've got to provide an amazing cleaning service. In other words, you've got to handle the transactions of cleaning with excellence. This includes the cleaning itself and surely the transaction of invoices and payments. You've got to be consistent in your cleaning service and everything you do in dealing with your customers. If you show up with great cleaning and character over a long time, you will develop trust. Another way to build trust is to give it. Others won't trust you if you don't trust them. Trust is mutual. I'm going to add a fourth C. You've got to have compassion for other people and not be selfish. This is so foundational. Show love for your fellow human. When you put this all together. Start with compassion and character. Become a great cleaner and cleaning service. Handle your transactions with excellence and trust. Give trust. Do this over time. This will earn your trust from your customers. Keep doing it consistently over time and that trust will turn into something greater. It's respect. When your customers respect you, they will want to do business with you for a long time. Most clients will grow with you as you grow mutual respect. However, some clients will only ever think of you as "just the cleaner". Become a person of trust and respect and you'll attract the right ones I absolutely love this mindset and it thrills me to build this type of cleaning business in my community. Everything hinges on relationships, not transactions. I hope you enjoy this interaction between Josh an I on Marco Polo.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Adam Optimizer Causes Privileged Basis in Transformer Language Models, published by Diego Caples on September 6, 2024 on LessWrong. Diego Caples (diego@activated-ai.com) Rob Neuhaus (rob@activated-ai.com) Introduction In principle, neuron activations in a transformer-based language model residual stream should be about the same scale. In practice, however the dimensions unexpectedly widely vary in scale. Mathematical theories of the transformer architecture do not predict this. They expect rotational equivariance within a model, where one dimension is no more important than any other. Is there something wrong with our reasonably informed intuitions of how transformers work? What explains these outlier channels? Previously, Anthropic researched the existence of these privileged basis dimensions (dimensions more important / larger than expected) and ruled out several causes. By elimination, they reached the hypothesis that per-channel normalization in the Adam optimizer was the cause of privileged basis. However, they did not prove this was the case. We conclusively show that Adam causes outlier channels / privileged basis within the transformer residual stream. When replacing the Adam optimizer with SGD, models trained do not have a privileged basis. As a whole, this work improves mechanistic understanding of transformer LM training dynamics and confirms that our mathematical models of transformers are not flawed. Rather, they simply do not take into account the training process. Our code is open source at the LLM outlier channel exploration GitHub. Key Results Training an LM with SGD does not result in a privileged basis, indicating that Adam is the cause of privileged basis in transformer LMs. Training a 12M parameter model on TinyStories allows us to replicate outlier channel behavior on a small LM, training in less than 15 minutes on an H100. Background Recommended Reading Privileged Bases in the Transformer Residual Stream Toy Models of Superposition (Privileged Basis Section) More About Anthropic's Work We consider Anthropic's research on privileged basis the primary motivator for this work. In Anthropic's Privileged Bases in the Transformer Residual Stream, they demonstrate privileged basis in a 200M parameter LLM, performed some experiments to rule out possible causes, but did not find a definitive cause. They hypothesize that outlier channels are caused by Adam's lack of rotational equivariance, and suggest that training using SGD could isolate Adam as the cause. Adam vs SGD, and Rotational Equivariance Consider an experiment where we rotate the parameter space of a neural network, train it, and then invert the rotation. With Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), this process yields the same model as if we hadn't rotated at all. However, with the Adam optimizer, we end up with a different model. This difference can be explained by the presence/absence a property called rotational equivariance. SGD is rotationally equivariant: optimizer steps are always directly proportional to the gradient of the loss function, regardless of the chosen coordinate system. In contrast, Adam is not rotationally equivariant because it takes steps in ways that are not proportional to the gradient. Updates depend on coordinate-wise gradient statistics. As we later show, this difference is what leads to privileged basis within LMs. Kurtosis Motivated by Anthropic, we use excess kurtosis as a metric for measuring basis privilege. We encourage the reader to read Anthropic's reasoning for why this is a good metric, but here we aim to demonstrate graphically that excess kurtosis is a reasonable choice for measuring basis privilege. We plot the middle layer residual stream activations for the last token of string: "Lilly saw a big red apple!" as an Adam optimized LM training run progresses....
Pay attention to the list of the most suspicious apps you may come across in Google Play. Delete them from your phone immediately to protect your personal data and extend the life of your phone. Their creators promise the apps will optimize your device, extend the life of your battery and protect your phone from viruses. Some of them are even supposed to be lie detectors and defragmentation devices. In fact, all they give you is ads, and what they do is get access to your data and kill your battery. Considering the huge number of apps created every single day, not even Google can keep track and check the safety of all the new programs. So the security of your device mostly depends on you! They can only analyze how much space certain programs take up, use your phone's resources and collect your personal data. -You will want to delete this app because it consumes tons of data since it's full of ads and causes a massive drain of your battery. -Battery savers and fast chargers can't really change the speed of your gadget charging, but can give you endless apps even on lock screen. -If you don't want these apps to get access to all your data, avoid them at all costs. In a recent Solo Elite Membership Call, the conversation focused on commercial cleaning. I made one statement about the price per hour decreasing with increasing building size. This does not compute to the Solo Optimizer's mindset. Why would you charge less as it gets bigger? You would lose a lot of profit. This is absolutely true through the lens of the Solo Optimizer's Mindset where success is measured by the best trade of profit you can make for the time you decide to leave your family each day. In the ISO Model Course, this metric is called the Workday Value (WDV). With the Solo Optimizer's Mindset of trading, there is no way a solo could charge less per hour for a larger building. Larger janitorial companies will come in at half the price and win every time. Solos cannot compete. This is why I heavily endorse a solo's commercial niche to be under 10,000 square foot buildings. The Scaling or Entrepreneur's Mindset is totally different. They are not trading their personal time. They have built reproducible systems through a team of employees. Therefore, they are selling manhours like the electric company sells kilowatt hours. In the scaling mindset, they are willing to drop the hourly cost of manhours to get larger buildings. This earns them a lot more volume and ultimately, a lot more profit. I shared in this clip that the Solo Optimizer can max out at $100- $150 per hour cleaning by themselves. This is amazing. It's what I did and it's what I teach in the ISO Model and the Solo Elite Membership. There is tremendous freedom possible in this career path with the Solo Optimizer's Mindset. Just realize that there is another level beyond this that you can only accomplish through duplication. J. Paul Getty is famous for this quote.“Would you rather have 100% of the effort off of you or 1% of the effort off of 100 people?” This is the central question between these two mindsets. The Solo Optimizer will maximize the 100% off the 1, while the Scaling Mindset seeks to maximize the number of 1% checks. You can earn a level of freedom as an Entrepreneur far beyond the freedom of the Solo Optimizer. It's a matter of choice. The end of this mindset and the question of which final career path to choose lies at the end of the Solo Elite Roadmap. Optimize first to freedom. Then you can either STAY, SELL, or SCALE to obtain further freedom. That's why we do this membership.I want to formally invite you to join the Solo Elite Membership. What is it? It's the only system for solo cleaners to optimize your solo cleaning business to earn six figures without the drama of employees! Or if you want to earn full time income through part time cleaning without employees. Make sure to check out all 3 ways to access the ISO Model and Solo Elite with prices ranging from $57 to $197/month at smartcleaningschool.com.

After Tengyu Ma spent years at Stanford researching AI optimization, embedding models, and transformers, he took a break from academia to start Voyage AI which allows enterprise customers to have the most accurate retrieval possible through the most useful foundational data. Tengyu joins Sarah on this week's episode of No priors to discuss why RAG systems are winning as the dominant architecture in enterprise and the evolution of foundational data that has allowed RAG to flourish. And while fine-tuning is still in the conversation, Tengyu argues that RAG will continue to evolve as the cheapest, quickest, and most accurate system for data retrieval. They also discuss methods for growing context windows and managing latency budgets, how Tengyu's research has informed his work at Voyage, and the role academia should play as AI grows as an industry. We know sequels can be hard, but with a guest like the Dick Doctor, we are pretty sure we pulled it off. You may remember last season, when urologist, sexual health specialist, and purveyor of the Popstar sexual health supplement, Dr Joshua Gonzalez joined us to discuss all things in regards to penile health. This time he returns to talk about another one of his specialties - male hormonal optimization! The science of testosterone replacement therapy has become way more popular in recent years among discussions of health and wellness for men, but there are a host of details and nuances that often get missed among the community. What even are steroids? Who is TRT right for? What kind of side effects can happen when we mess with our hormones? Dr Gonzalez gives Adam and Cole a few lessons on how it all works and what he can do to help us as we age and our systems change. Broaching the subject of what's happening in our pants again, he also shares a new offering in his sexual health office called Shockwave Therapy, which Adam and Cole are both enjoying the benefits of. Take notes folks, our internal systems are even more complicated than our dating habits.

On this very long episode, the girls/women discuss the recent New York Magazine piece on Andrew Huberman's allegedly womanizing ways. Meghan defends the magazine fact-checking process, but Sarah finds the whole thing disgusting. They both agree that attempting to optimize your poops is psychotic, unless of course it is done in the name of Science. They then move on to age gaps in dating, and whether Sarah is trash for dressing for the Male Gaze. Our little Special Place is supported entirely by listeners. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How to safely use an optimizer, published by Simon Fischer on March 29, 2024 on LessWrong. Summary: The post describes a method that allows us to use an untrustworthy optimizer to find satisficing outputs. Acknowledgements: Thanks to Benjamin Kolb (@benjaminko), Jobst Heitzig (@Jobst Heitzig) and Thomas Kehrenberg (@Thomas Kehrenberg) for many helpful comments. Introduction Imagine you have black-box access to a powerful but untrustworthy optimizing system, the Oracle. What do I mean by "powerful but untrustworthy"? I mean that, when you give an objective function f as input to the Oracle, it will output an element x that has an impressively low[1] value of f(x). But sadly, you don't have any guarantee that it will output the optimal element and e.g. not one that's also chosen for a different purpose (which might be dangerous for many reasons, e.g. instrumental convergence). What questions can you safely ask the Oracle? Can you use it to create utopia by asking for designs of machines, proteins, computer programs, etc.? Or are you risking the destruction of everything that we value if you dare to use such designs? As an example, the Oracle could be a learned system; in that case, the topic of this post would be finding a way to get useful work out of the Oracle despite its inner misalignment. In this post I'll describe a technique that allows us to safely use the Oracle under fairly weak assumptions. This approach can also be considered to be a way of controlling arbitrarily powerful AI systems. One neat trick This isn't fair, isn't fair, isn't fair! There's a limit to how many constraints you can add to a problem before it really is impossible! (Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, Chapter 56) Let O be a finite set of possible outputs of the Oracle (e.g. strings of length at most l) and f:OR be our objective function. Let's assume we are happy with an output that satisfices; i.e. we want to find an output x such that the value of f(x) is lower than some threshold c. Let S={xOf(x)

“Realistically, as we age, we just physiologically are not the same as we used to be. And that has not just a physical effect on us; it has a mental, cognitive, and emotional effect on us as well.” —Dustin Baker While modern medicine has achieved incredible feats, dependence on synthetic prescription drugs is not without its downsides. By their very nature, these medications are designed as "selective poisons" that incur side effects for many users. From minor issues like drowsiness or nausea to more serious long-term health impacts, taking synthetic drugs always involves trading one's well-being for another. As more people seek to proactively manage their health and optimize wellness without compromising on risks, the demand has grown for natural alternatives that can provide prescription-level benefits without the potential dangers. Led by Dustin Baker, BioProtein Technology develops natural, non-synthetic supplements that provide the same benefits as prescription drugs without any side effects. Through innovative research and clinically-backed products, BioProtein Technology aims to help individuals enhance their health, performance, and quality of life in a safe and natural way. Listen in as Justine and Dustin share a behind-the-scenes look at product research and development processes, scaling a company, developing gender-specific products to meet more customer needs, and innovating revolutionary products for a healthier future without dependence on synthetic medications. Health and aging coach Al Lyman, author of Age Well and Feel Great, The Proven Path to Solving the Aging Puzzle and Going the Distance, shares his formula for healthy longevity. The Ironman triathlete offers practical tips for making positive lifestyle changes, and encourages small steps applied consistently for long-term success. About Al From a young age, Al Lyman took a cue from Walt Whitman when he said, “Be curious, not judgmental.” He has always wondered why some people live a healthy life until death and others suffer from chronic, debilitating illnesses. As a result, at the tender age of 25 he made a conscious decision to die healthy, a concept he called ‘squaring the curve' of life span vs. health span. Sadly, his Dad's declining health and eventual brain cancer diagnosis that claimed his life at the young age of 65 illuminated this concept, inspiring Al to turn up the volume on his own journey to optimal health. While watching the Hawaii Ironman on TV with his daughter, he impulsively announced, “I'm gonna do the Ironman!” That monumental decision propelled him to complete nine Ironman triathlons, while proudly displaying his #makehimproud arm tattoo (honoring his father). During this journey he was approached by other athletes who were drawn to his passion and desire to ‘go the distance' for a healthier outcome, and as a result, Al spent two decades in high performance sports coaching. Today, Al is known as the Age Optimizer, who helps you “live stronger in your second half.” He specializes in aging-related health coaching for mature adults determined to beat the ‘doctor dance' and take back their lives. He teaches long-term physical, emotional and mental health techniques to help people over 50 conquer their inner critic. He personalizes every client's path to wellness and a pain-free lifestyle. His signature Lyman Longevity Formula, in a few words, helps you spend more time with the ones you love, longer…and #makethemproud. Al is the author of Age Well and Feel Great: The Proven Path to Solving the Aging Puzzle and Going the Distance. He's also the creator of the B.E.A.T. Aging Transformation, a nod to his life as a drummer, and commitment to march to a healthy beat. Key Takeaways Health is our greatest wealth. Make the best choices to optimize health, but also enjoy life. Seemingly insignificant habits add up over time. Vitality and vibrancy are normal as we age, but we have to take action to create good health. The average American over 60 is on 2-3 prescription medications for chronic disease. Be proactive when it comes to healthcare decisions. Perform your own due diligence and advocate for yourself. Be willing to have challenging conversations with healthcare providers. Strength training is key to preventing age-related muscle wasting, known as sarcopenia. It's not about perfection; it's about consistency. Consistency leads to motivation because we start to feel the benefits.

I'm coming in saying, ‘No, wait, classrooms don't exist. Chalkboards don't exist, desks don't exist.' When you've been in education for a long time, it's hard to break that mindset. And so they tend to just default to innovating the existing instead of wiping the slate clean and saying, ‘If we were creating school for the first time today and you had never seen a classroom, you had never seen anything that existed today, how would you do it? What would you create that meets students with today's world?' And that's designed to innovate itself.” -Heidi DeCoux “I would say the one thing that we know for certain throughout history is that the only real progress has come from the Ruckus Makers. So if not you, who, and if not now, then when.” -Heidi DeCoux Get the episode transcript here!
