Elliot Moss didn't join a law firm to keep things the same. As Partner and Chief Brand Officer at Mishcon de Reya LLP, he brought a deep understanding of branding into a profession that often dismisses it, and changed how one of the UK's top firms thinks about growth and perception. He shares how clarity, consistency, and emotional intelligence turned Mishcon from a £45 million practice into a £380 million brand defined by truth and differentiation, not slogans. Clients, he says, may buy expertise, but they stay because of trust and how a firm makes them feel.   He talks candidly about leading change in a culture that prizes logic over emotion, showing how small wins and patience can reshape perception from within. The conversation moves beyond marketing into the psychology of leadership, exploring why authentic differentiation matters more than polish and how strong branding can become a firm's greatest competitive advantage. For Elliot, the future of law will belong to those who understand that perception drives performance—and that real brand power is earned, not advertised.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Building a Brand Inside a Law Firm 04:35 From Advertising to Legal Branding 06:30 Why Differentiation Matters in Professional Services 09:08 Changing Client Perception Through Authentic Branding 15:33 Strategy and Growth at Mishcon de Reya LLP 24:32 Leading Change in a Traditional Industry 31:16 AI, Private Capital, and the Future of Law Firms 36:59 Elliot Moss on Leadership and Opportunity Connect with Elliot Moss Connect with Elliot on LinkedIn Elliot's Web Bio   Connect with Howard Rosenberg: Connect with Howard on LinkedIn Howard's Company Web Profile   Connect with Chris Batz: Connect with Chris on LinkedIn  Follow Columbus Street on LinkedIn Columbus Street Website  Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Scotland Yard has come under intense scrutiny for repeatedly opening and then quietly closing inquiries into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. When allegations involving Virginia Giuffre and potential UK-based trafficking surfaced years ago, the Metropolitan Police declined to pursue a full investigation, claiming it was outside their jurisdiction and not the “appropriate authority” to handle the matter. Even as mounting media coverage, survivor testimony, and public pressure demanded action, the force appeared determined to distance itself rather than confront the implications of a high-profile trafficking network operating on British soil. Critics argue that closing the case so quickly—despite the gravity and credibility of the accusations—looked less like a procedural decision and more like an intentional effort to avoid political and institutional fallout.Years later, when Scotland Yard announced it was reviewing new allegations against Maxwell related to grooming and trafficking in the UK, there was a brief sense of hope that justice might finally be taken seriously. But the review ultimately stalled without becoming a full investigation, igniting outrage from advocates who accused the force of protecting the powerful rather than defending victims. The pattern is unmistakable: initiate interest only under pressure, then retreat the moment attention shifts. To many, it feels like a choreographed performance meant to pacify public outrage rather than uncover the truth—a police institution more concerned with shielding reputations than exposing the depth of a criminal enterprise tied to elite circles.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this Monday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan covers the White House's growing anxiety over the economy, the nationwide crackdown on illegal migrant truck drivers, new DHS surges into sanctuary cities, the rise of openly socialist leadership on the West Coast, and escalating tensions with China in the Pacific. White House Softens Tariffs as Prices Rise: President Trump acknowledged that tariffs may be affecting consumers and announced lower rates on coffee, beef, bananas, and other staples. Prices have soared due to weather, crop disease, and global demand rather than tariffs alone. Bryan explains that the cuts signal the administration's concern that working families are still struggling and that midterm voters may blame the GOP if the economy does not improve soon. Families Fear the Cost of Children: A new American Family Survey found that seventy percent of Americans believe raising kids has become too expensive. Bryan warns that this trend threatens the nation's future and highlights the connection between economic strain and family planning decisions. Crackdown on Unsafe Migrant Truck Drivers: The White House pressured California to revoke seventeen thousand driver's licenses issued to migrants who often cannot read English or safely operate heavy trucks. Some judges in Washington blocked the rule on procedural grounds, creating legal limbo. Bryan notes that until courts rule, untrained foreign drivers will remain on American highways. DHS Surge Operations Expand: Federal officers have flooded Charlotte, North Carolina, where one in five residents is foreign born. The move mirrors earlier crackdowns in Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles, and Washington, where crime dropped after DHS deployments. Bryan says New Orleans is next. Catholic Bishops Clash with the White House: The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops accused the administration of racism and fearmongering. Border czar Tom Homan responded that securing the border saves lives and that the Church should focus on its own scandals. Socialists Rise in Seattle and Los Angeles: Seattle elected an openly socialist mayor who supports abolishing the police under a communist economic system. In Los Angeles, another socialist candidate is challenging Mayor Karen Bass. Bryan connects these victories to a wider ideological battle inside the Democratic Party, where figures like Obama and Clinton now embrace democratic socialism while voices like Bill Maher warn against it. Democrats Plan Supreme Court Expansion: Longtime strategist James Carville confirmed that the party intends to expand the Supreme Court to thirteen justices once Democrats regain the presidency and Congress. He expects the party to remove the filibuster for that purpose, declaring the fight against Trump a national emergency. GOP Infighting Grows: Trump attacked Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie over comments about Epstein files and personal issues. Bryan urges conservatives to stop the internal battles as socialist movements gain ground nationwide. China Leverages Rare Earths and Military Power: Beijing is delaying rare earth shipments and failed to buy U.S. soybeans despite promises. A shortage of yttrium is emerging, although a U.S. company in Indiana will begin refining it next month. Meanwhile, China sent Coast Guard ships into Japanese waters and unveiled a new aircraft carrier, signaling rising tensions in the Pacific. Trump's Narco-Terror Operation Continues: Another drug boat was destroyed in the Pacific under Operation Southern Spear. Critics in the U.K. claim the strikes violate international law, though the White House says cartels qualify as narco-terrorists and legitimate targets. Britain's Leader Shifts Right on Immigration: Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced sweeping new restrictions, ending cash allowances for asylum seekers, requiring work, and imposing twenty-year waits for permanent residency. Bryan notes the political pressure building across Europe as voters demand tougher borders. Saudi Crown Prince to Visit Washington: The White House may sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, though U.S. intelligence fears technology theft and regional imbalance with Israel. Economic deals may also emerge as Riyadh seeks to follow through on earlier promises. Good News from Southeast Asia: Trump brokered a fresh ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after border clashes. Cambodia is moving closer to the United States, granting new access to a key naval base and pushing out Chinese crime networks.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: Trump tariff cuts grocery prices, American Family Survey cost of children, migrant truck drivers CDL revocation, DHS Charlotte surge, Tom Homan Catholic bishops border, Seattle socialist mayor police abolition, Los Angeles socialist candidate Rae Huang, James Carville Supreme Court expansion, GOP infighting Epstein files, China rare earth yttrium shortage, Senkaku Islands China Coast Guard, Operation Southern Spear drug boats, UK asylum overhaul Starmer, Saudi Arabia F-35 visit, Cambodia Thailand ceasefire

On this episode of the podcast, NetChoice's Director of Policy Patrick Hedger details why they launched a new lawsuit against the State of Virginia for passing a new law that would require minors younger than 16 years of age to undergo age-verification, receive parental consent, and be limited to just one hour per day of use on social media platforms. Hedger argues that this regulation represents a direct assault on free speech and privacy, comparing it to forcing you to read a book only one hour at a time or verifying your identity just to watch a documentary. Hedger contrasts Virginia's approach with similar efforts, such as Texas' SB814 which targeted minors' access to pornographic content, and highlights a worrying trend of regulatory models being adopted from abroad, including the UK's Online Safety Act and the proposed Kids Online Safety Act in Congress. Why Buying More “Magic” Materials Won't Make You a Better Perfumer

    The Perfume Making Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2025 34:48

It's easy to believe that the secret to creating great fragrances lies in having more materials - more naturals, more synthetics, more obscure aroma chemicals. But as Karen explains in this episode, the opposite is usually true. Expanding your organ too quickly can overwhelm your creativity, stall your progress, and make it harder to build the strong foundation you need to truly master the craft of perfumery. Karen breaks down exactly why “more” is rarely the answer, why many professionals still work with a limited palette, and how to experiment, build skill, confidence, and clarity by initially using a focused, small set of materials. KEY TAKEAWAYS In perfumery, progress comes from starting simple and structured learning - not from collecting hundreds of bottles. Most trained perfumers work with a tight palette that they fully understand. Don´t be tempted to start by exploring big scent concepts, they can tempt you into collecting unusual materials prematurely. Start by making simple scents first. Remember most powerful or “interesting” materials only work in tiny amounts. Without practice and proper dilution, they can easily unbalance a blend. Start by practicing with a focused set of ingredients. Learn to dilute them correctly, carefully observe how each material and combination behaves and make notes. BEST MOMENTS “Weird, wacky, interesting materials do not make you more creative. They don't make you a better perfumer - knowing how to use them does.” “You are literally trying to build this whole city before you've built your shed in the garden.” “If you change everything in a formulation over and over again, you're going to keep going around in circles.” “You can own hundreds of materials and still be guessing and floundering, or you can have 20 core materials and be working with them and learning about how they interact with each other.” EPISODE RESOURCES Use the discount code shared during the show to master the 70 most important materials you need to build a strong skill foundation for your perfumer career by going here - https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/materials-mastery https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/studio-classes Getting Started Guide: https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/podcast-getting-started-guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind: https://www.karengilbert.co.uk/artisan-perfumery-mastermind Website: https://www.karengilbert.co.uk ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher, and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. This episode features an in-depth conversation with philanthropist Sarah Butler-Sloss, founder and chair of the Aurora Trust and member of the Sainsbury family. With more than three decades of experience in environmental philanthropy, she offers an expansive perspective on climate action, sustainable finance, regenerative agriculture, and the role of foundations in driving systemic change. The discussion begins with the origins and evolution of the Aurora Trust, established in 1990 to support environmental and biodiversity initiatives. Sarah outlines the trust's core areas of focus: halting tropical deforestation, advancing sustainable and regenerative farming in the UK, connecting children from disadvantaged communities with nature, improving sustainable finance systems, and supporting energy-access solutions in partnership with Ashden. A substantial portion of the conversation examines the importance of aligning endowment investments with charitable purpose. Sarah shares the story behind the landmark Butler-Sloss vs Charity Commission case, in which she and her brother successfully argued that charitable endowments should consider mission alignment—not solely financial returns—when determining investment strategy. This judgment has since shaped UK charity investment guidance, enabling foundations to invest in ways consistent with environmental and social objectives. The episode also explores the changing landscape of philanthropy, particularly the growing pressures on UK charities and funders. Sarah stresses the value of collaboration among donors and organisations, the importance of avoiding duplication, and the need to support both established institutions and promising early-stage initiatives. She reflects on how foundations can balance coordinated efforts with maintaining independence and openness to innovation. Later, the conversation turns to the Ashden Awards, the global initiative Sarah founded 25 years ago to identify, celebrate, and scale exemplary clean-energy solutions. She describes their evolution from a pure award programme to a wider platform for policy influence, investment mobilisation, and global awareness-raising. Stories from the Global South and the UK illustrate how clean-energy innovators deliver powerful social, economic, and environmental benefits. Sarah closes with a clear message for philanthropists: grants are only part of the picture. Endowments must also be deployed responsibly and strategically to advance charitable purpose and avoid undermining the very challenges philanthropy seeks to address. Is this too little, too late from Starmer's government? Are these policies really bold, or simply Reform UK lite? Jon Gaunt will analyse the major announcements, the backlash inside Labour's own ranks, the reactions from Reform and Conservatives, and whether these measures stand a chance of reducing illegal Channel crossings. We'll also ask the explosive question the government seems to be avoiding:
