Mind Love • Modern Mindfulness to Think, Feel, and Live Well
Here's what you'll discover in this episode:Why your triggers are actually doorways to freedomHow to tell if you're healing or just recycling traumaThe difference between spiritual growth and ego transformationWhen does healing become just another addiction?I used to think healing meant fixing all the broken parts of myself. Like I could somehow surgically remove every wound, every trigger, every uncomfortable emotion and emerge as this perfectly polished version of who I was supposed to be. But that's not healing. That's spiritual bypassing dressed up in self-help language. What I didn't realize is that healing can become its own trap. You can get so addicted to the process, so comfortable in the identity of "someone who's working on themselves," that you never actually arrive anywhere. You just keep circling the same wounds, having the same breakthroughs, collecting the same insights like spiritual trophies.Real healing looks more like standing at an intersection, recognizing you're about to road rage at someone who cut you off, and suddenly seeing that your anger has nothing to do with them. It's about that part of you that's still 12 years old, desperate to be seen and validated. The part you've been trying to silence for decades.Today our guest is Nicholas Cassius Clay, an integrative coach and founder of Being One World who helps people cut through the healing fog to find real clarity. He combines everything from ancient wisdom to neuroscience, helping clients actually complete their healing cycles instead of endlessly circling them.Links from the episode:Show Notes: mindlove.com/419Join the Mind Love CollectiveSign up for The Morning Mind Love for short daily notes to wake up inspiredSupport Mind Love SponsorsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this conversation, we close the villain series with the Invisible Destroyer—also known as The Nothing from The NeverEnding Story. This archetype represents the paralysis of possibility, where imagination and inspiration remain ungrounded, slowly eroding both the self and those around it. We explore how this villain shows up as addiction, avoidance, and endless questioning, and how its transformation into the Architect brings creativity into embodied form. Along the way, we unpack how this arc blends qualities of the Enneagram 5 and 6, why Radiohead may be its unofficial soundtrack, and what it really takes to move from disappearing into inertia to choosing life, creation, and presence. We close with a vivid “Am I the Asshole?” example that grounds these themes in relationship dynamics.Timestamps00:00 — Welcome, final villain in the series00:15 — Invisible Destroyer, aka The Nothing00:30 — Archetypal map: Enneagram 9, head center, separation wound, house of addiction01:20 — Why it feels like “a combo of the 5 and 6”: evasive expert + divisive immortal01:45 — The NeverEnding Story and the Nothing as lack of human attention and imagination03:00 — Paralyzed by possibility: endless questions without action04:10 — The wake of destruction from inaction and addiction04:40 — Successful Antagonist: The Questioner, delaying decisions forever06:10 — Wounded Child: The Overwhelmed, never big enough to handle life07:00 — Covert Form: The Addict, disappearing through escapism08:10 — Hero: The Embodied, choosing incarnation, creation, and presence (with pleasure as a pathway)09:20 — Legend: The Architect, building grounded worlds from imagination10:00 — Why this arc belongs at the end of the villain cycle: outward, complex, foundational10:45 — Real-life dynamics: undervaluing presence and its destructive impact on relationships11:30 — AITA case study: birthday dinner, avoidance, blocking, and the Nothing's invisibility wound13:30 — Radiohead soundtrack: How to Disappear Completely, Lotus Flower, and the addictive undertones of disappearing17:00 — Closing thoughts: start with villains 1–6 before tackling the complexity of 7–9The arc at a glancePinnacle Villain: Invisible Destroyer (The Nothing) — Inspiration ungrounded, inertia that consumes.Successful Antagonist: The Questioner — Delays action indefinitely by demanding more certainty.Wounded Child: The Overwhelmed — Believes they can never be big enough to handle life.Covert Form: The Addict — Escapes through substances or compulsions, invisibly eroding relationships.Hero: The Embodied — Chooses presence, incarnation, creativity, and embodied pleasure.Legend: The Architect — Builds tangible worlds from imagination and dreams.Key ideas and languageThe Nothing: Inaction as destruction; the void left when imagination is unused.Addiction as covert destruction: Disappearing through self-harm, leaving collateral damage.Paralysis of possibility: Asking without acting, researching without deciding.Presence as medicine: Recognizing that showing up, even imperfectly, matters.Imagination grounded: Dreams are valuable only when incarnated into lived form.Practices for listenersPleasure as embodimentUse sexual or sensual pleasure as a direct route into your body.Notice how aliveness shifts when you commit to being present in sensation. The small action rulePick one tiny step toward creation daily, even if imperfect.Doing badly is better than not doing at all.Name the overwhelmWrite down three things you cannot do right now. Then choose one thing you can do and act on it.Reclaim visibilityAsk yourself: “Where am I pretending my presence doesn't matter?”Practice showing up where you assume no one cares.Case study insightsBirthday dinner scenario: Downplaying one's presence leads to relational collapse. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Twila Mason, author of the book Piece by Piece. Twila is an award-winning romance author. She has been writing her own stories since she learned how to read. She is a writer of romance, women's fiction, poetry, and short stories. Her work explores raw emotions and the complexities of life while finding the hope within every obstacle. After obtaining a PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology, she switched gears to follow her lifelong dream of putting her fictional stories out into the world. She lives the rural, small-town life in Missouri with her husband, two kids, and menagerie of animals. When she's not reading or writing, Twila can be found crafting, farming, doing home improvement projects, or going on adventures with her family. In my book review, I stated Piece by Piece is a friends-to-lovers contemporary romance that takes a hard look at the drug culture - and what it does to families. Aria spends her childhood looking after her baby brother, Ben, because her mother simple cannot. As a drug addict, she is often high, always unreliable, and rarely offers motherly support. When her mother spends the rent money, Aria arrives home to find the family is now on the street. She turns to an old friend, Luke, who found a way out of the old neighborhood. Although there is an immediate spark between them, Luke and Aria dance around the attraction because neither is ready to commit. We get front row seats as we watch them battle their demons and navigate a new world where peace, hope, and love have a chance to exist. As completely foreign concepts, neither one really knows what to do when life isn't a battlefield. That's not to say everything is easy. Moving past trauma and finding the right path is not easy. Nor is forgiveness - of others or of self. And what to do when the ones you should love are the ones that keep hurting you? This story is sweet as two young people fall in love. But it is also edgy as we see what happens when drugs and alcohol cause childhood trauma and can easily create a family cycle of abuse. Curtis Morley is an author, coach, speaker, and "emotionologist" who has been an entrepreneur for most of his life. He is the author of The Entrepreneur's Paradox, a Wall Street Journal bestseller. He also has a forthcoming book titled Counterfeit Emotions. His work focuses on helping people, including entrepreneurs, with personal development and growth. He has founded multiple companies and worked with many Fortune 100 businesses. He has also been recognized with awards such as Entrepreneur of the Year and has been included in the Inc. 500/5000 Hall of Fame. Morley's work and speaking engagements often center on the concept of "counterfeit emotions"—feelings that may seem authentic but can lead to destructive cycles of disconnection. He has developed a framework to help people identify and replace these emotions with authentic ones to live a more fulfilling life. Links Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community The Entrepreneur's Paradox: How to Overcome the 16 Pitfalls Along the Startup Journey CounterfeitEmotions.com/recovery RecoveryNotSobriety.com Highlights Curtis focuses on the myths surrounding pornography addiction. The discussion emphasizes the distinction between sobriety and recovery, exploring how understanding emotions can lead to more effective healing. Key Insights Sobriety vs. Recovery: Sobriety measures how long one can abstain from pornography, while recovery focuses on understanding and processing underlying emotions. True recovery involves addressing the root causes rather than merely avoiding the behavior. Myth of Willpower: Overcoming pornography addiction is not solely about willpower. Many individuals struggle with deeper emotional issues that drive their behaviors, making it essential to address these emotions rather than just the actions. Shame vs. Guilt: Guilt can be a motivating emotion that encourages individuals to make amends, while shame leads to disconnection and despair. Understanding this distinction is crucial for effective recovery. Connection and Community: Building connections and fostering community can significantly aid recovery. Isolation often exacerbates addiction, while supportive relationships can provide the necessary encouragement and accountability. The Importance of Processing Emotions: Curtis introduces the "whole" method for processing emotions, which includes witnessing emotions, harmonizing through breathing, opening the mind to triggers, leading one's life, and editing the meaning of past experiences. Leadership Applications Creating Safe Spaces: Latter-day Saint leaders can foster environments where individuals feel safe to discuss their struggles with pornography and other issues without fear of judgment, encouraging open dialogue. Focus on Emotional Health: Leaders should prioritize understanding the emotional triggers behind behaviors rather than just addressing the behaviors themselves. This approach can lead to more meaningful support and healing. Encouraging Community Support: Leaders can facilitate peer support groups or mentorship programs that promote connection among members, helping individuals feel less isolated in their struggles and more empowered in their recovery journey. 00:02:15 - Understanding Sobriety vs. Recovery 00:06:49 - The Difference Between Sobriety and Recovery 00:09:06 - Emotional Triggers and Leadership 00:10:08 - The Myth of Sobriety 00:12:12 - Transformational Recovery 00:13:27 - Sobriety is Miserable, Recovery is Peaceful 00:15:02 - Taking Your Demons to Lunch 00:18:08 - Addiction to Shame 00:19:09 - Addressing the Root Causes 00:20:21 - The Loop of Shame and Addiction 00:22:36 - Guilt vs. Shame 00:24:06 - Identifying and Surfacing Demons 00:26:44 - The Importance of Connection 00:29:34 - The Role of Community in Recovery 00:30:17 - The Whole Method Explained 00:36:21 - Overview of the Myths The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top indep...

When Lisa Smith's family was gripped by the terror of her son's addiction, they felt like mere spectators to a relentless storm. But through her groundbreaking concept of parallel recovery, they began to reclaim their roles as active participants in the healing process. In this compelling episode, we sit down with Lisa, a TEDx speaker and author, who shares her family's transformative journey. She illuminates how families can support their loved ones suffering from addiction and mental health challenges by first addressing their own fears and recovery needs. Her insights shed light on addiction as a family disease and underscore the importance of structured recovery to create a more supportive environment. Our conversation with Lisa also navigates the vital principles of radical acceptance and compassionate boundaries in the recovery journey. She delves into the layered challenges families face, including confronting generational trauma and the systemic issues making family recovery services less accessible. We explore how stepping back from fear-driven responses can foster healthier interactions, and how setting boundaries, rather than being acts of harshness, can be deeply compassionate. Lisa's message is clear: when families engage in recovery, they not only aid their loved ones but enrich their own lives and relationships, crafting a nurturing space for healing amidst adversity. In this episode, you will hear:The concept of parallel recovery and its impact on family dynamics in addictionLisa Smith's personal journey with her son's addiction and mental health challengesImportance of addressing addiction as a family disease and involving families in the recovery processExploration of radical acceptance and compassionate boundaries in healingChallenges families face, including generational trauma and systemic barriers to recovery servicesFollow and Review:We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Alan reflects on his 27 years in dentistry, revealing how his past struggles with addiction and a conservative approach to treatment planning have impacted his practice. He admits he often defaults to a "watch-and-wait" approach in gray-area cases, feeling a need to save patients money or fearing they will say no to treatment. He worries this may lead to more complex and expensive procedures down the road, benefiting neither the patient nor his business. Alan challenges himself to be more assertive in presenting a full range of treatment options, allowing patients to make their own decisions. He believes this shift is crucial for both his professional growth and the long-term well-being of his patients. On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss the parable of the dishonest manager in Luke's gospel, which they rename it as the parable of the "wiley pastor." The commendable manager uses the absolution – the forgiveness of debt – as generously as he can, in order to gain friends for himself. Likewise, preachers ought to give the absolution as frequently as possible, since it is the best thing in life.
