Vagus Nerve Stimulation Improves Cognitive Scores in a Small Trial In a 24-week trial involving people with mild cognitive impairment, participants assigned to electrical stimulation at vagus-innervated parts of the ear improved by an average of 3.2 points on a general cognitive test, compared with 0.3 points in a sham-stimulation group. Host Dave Asprey explores the proposed connection between the vagus nerve and the locus coeruleus, a brainstem region involved in attention and learning. He explains why an improved test score is intriguing but does not show that vagus nerve stimulation prevents Alzheimer's disease—or that a consumer device will reproduce the study's results.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih+1 Sources: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36150665/ https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13214873/ https://theconversation.com/vagus-nerve-stimulation-shows-promise-as-a-way-to-counter-alzheimers-disease-and-age-related-memory-loss-269465 ~~~Nearly 500 Cat Tumors Reveal Cancer Genes Shared With Humans Researchers analyzed 493 matched tumor and normal-tissue samples across 13 types of cancer in domestic cats. They found alterations in genes familiar to human cancer researchers, including TP53, and tested whether a mutation called FBXW7 might predict drug sensitivity in lab-grown models of feline mammary tumors. Host Dave Asprey examines why naturally occurring cancers in pets could help scientists investigate treatments across species, while making clear that a promising response in six laboratory tumor models is not a proven treatment for cats or people.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih Sources: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7618901/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41712721/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/09/260924231826.htm ~~~Twin-Family Study Challenges a Simple Explanation for Inherited Intelligence Why do parents and children often score similarly on tests of cognitive ability? Researchers using Germany's TwinLife data found that genetic transmission explained more of that resemblance than the particular shared-home-environment pathway their model tested. Host Dave Asprey unpacks the distinction between why relatives resemble one another and whether a child's environment matters. The study does not show that parenting, education, or other experiences have no effect on cognition.pub.uni-bielefeld+1 Sources: https://pub.uni-bielefeld.de/record/2993432 https://www.psypost.org/genetics-not-shared-environments-drives-parent-child-similarities-in-cognitive-ability/ ~~~Mulberry Compounds May Change Gut Bacteria and Metabolism A review of mulberry research highlights how leaves, fruit, and differently processed extracts contain distinct mixtures of compounds that gut microbes may use. In mouse experiments, a fraction combining mulberry polyphenols and polysaccharides produced more favorable microbiome and metabolic changes than either fraction alone; transferring microbes from treated mice passed along some of those effects. Host Dave Asprey explores the idea that a plant extract's preparation may matter as much as its name—and why the findings do not yet establish a microbiome benefit from mulberry products in humans.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih+1 Sources: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13406227/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/09/260928100551.htm ~~~Magnesium Changes Vitamin D Metabolism—But Not Always in the Same Direction Magnesium helps regulate the pathways that process vitamin D, but “more magnesium means more vitamin D” is too simple. In a 12-week randomized trial involving 180 adults, magnesium supplementation changed a measured vitamin D metabolite differently depending on participants' starting vitamin D levels: the modeled difference was positive at 30 ng/mL and negative at 50 ng/mL. Host Dave Asprey explains why this matters to people tracking supplement stacks and bloodwork, while distinguishing a change in a lab marker from a demonstrated health benefit.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih+1 Sources: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6693398/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29480918/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/02/180226122548.htm This episode is designed for biohackers, longevity enthusiasts, pet owners, parents, and anyone trying to separate a compelling biological mechanism from a proven health intervention. Host Dave Asprey examines brain stimulation and memory, what cat cancers could teach human researchers, how genes and environment contribute to cognitive similarity, whether mulberry's microbiome effects translate beyond mice, and why nutrient interactions are rarely as simple as a supplement headline suggests. Several studies discussed here predate this week's coverage; this is a research roundup, not a list of five newly published trials.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih+4 New episodes every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Does homework time in your house end in tears, arguments, or a kid still awake at midnight?  In this episode, Dr. Aliza Pressman sits down with Dr. Ellen Braaten, founding director of the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program (LEAP) at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. Together they unpack why homework has become such a point of tension in families, why more homework isn't actually better for kids, and how too much of it can quietly chip away at sleep, motivation, and mental health, whether your child is in second grade or staying up late studying in high school.  What you'll learn: ● How much homework kids actually need by age, and why more than two hours a night stops helping  ● The hidden costs of too much homework: lost sleep, lower motivation, and rising anxiety  ● How to support your child without hovering, controlling, or doing the work for them ● What to say (and what to skip) when your child is crying over homework  ● Why bright kids with ADHD, learning differences, or slow processing speed can take hours to finish  ● How to tell the difference between a homework problem and a mental health problem

The mental load doesn't move at all. What's going on there? And why are self-help books crashing, while coaching is taking off? In this conversation, you'll explore:Why the most common fix for an overloaded household leaves the heaviest part completely untouchedThe question Leah's husband asked her about the word "good" that quietly reset her entire standard for running a homeWhat the data leaves out, and why the scorekeeping it invites can erode a long partnershipSelf-help book sales fell roughly 25% in a year while coaching grew about 15%, and what people are actually paying for insteadThe one thing a human can do that no book and no chatbot can, which may be the real reason the advice stopped workingBoth halves of this conversation land in the same place, which is that the discomfort you keep trying to optimize away is usually the thing worth turning toward instead. You can find Leah at: Instagram | Everyday Better with Leah Smart Substack | Episode TranscriptCheck out our sponsors and resources: Visit Our Sponsor Page Hosted on Acast. When was the last time you jumped in a pile of leaves without taking a picture of it? And do you know what not doing this is doing to your nervous system? In this week's episode, Dr. Josh talks about what it means to go analog in a digital world. He covers why our screens have quietly become our masters, what half-attention teaches our kids, and the small two-degree shifts that bring us back to our own soul, our spouse, and our kids. You don't have to get rid of your devices. But you may need to get rid of your vices. Here are some highlights: Anything you can't fast from owns you.Connection comes from small two-degree shifts, not one radical decision.Kids notice your continous partial attention. When they say "look at me," they deserve all of you.Go analog: find what works for you (e.g. no dings, phone stays inside when you play, one screen-free room, one screen-free time of day.)Boredom isn't the enemy. It's where creativity starts.Use screens to create, not just consume.God often speaks in the silence, and our noise can drown Him out.Show Notes: Looking for one-on-one coaching with Dr. Josh to be famous at home? https://www.famousathome.com/individualcoachingMen, sign up for the Living Legacy Cohort. In this solo episode of Live On Purpose Radio, Dr. Paul Jenkins takes on one of the most common laments he has heard in his practice: why do I do what I do when I know what I know? His answer is good news. Your brain is not malfunctioning. It is doing something it is remarkably good at, which is automating whatever you have already practiced. Neural pathways turn repeated experiences into cruise control, the same way walking, typing, or driving a car become automatic without a conscious thought.   That same process runs on our thoughts. We carry practiced ways of judging our circumstances, ourselves, and the people around us, and we have rehearsed some of those patterns thousands of times over decades. So when an old thought shows up on its own, there is no reason for guilt or shame. Familiar does not mean true. It means practiced. Dr. Paul introduces metacognition, thinking about thinking, as the place to start, because it creates a little space and that space is where choice lives. He also offers a shift in language: instead of "I'm just a negative person" or "I'm just an anxious person," try "I have become very practiced at noticing things negatively." A practiced pattern can be practiced differently.   To show what reprogramming takes, he describes the scrambled keyboards he brings to corporate trainings, with the keys popped off and put back in the wrong places. Most people need about forty-five seconds to type their own first name on one. Nobody would bother learning that layout without a reason, and that is the point. Two things are required to build a new neural pathway: meaning or purpose, and repetition. Meaning is essential but not enough on its own. You still have to take the keyboard home and put in the reps. He also reminds listeners not to confuse unfamiliar with unnatural, and points back to episode 721, "Now do it again tomorrow."   The episode closes with a question and an invitation. What are you practicing? Notice one thought pattern today that seems to run automatically, without beating yourself up, and ask whether it is a pattern you want to keep practicing. You have thoughts, but you are not your thoughts. October's theme on Positives is the brain, "the owner's manual." Positives is built for transformational learning through daily, weekly, and monthly practices, with the daily ones starting at three minutes a day. Rewire Your Relationships: The Attachment Patterns, Blind Spots, and Protective Moves Shaping How You Love

After Bedtime with Big Little Feelings

You can be wildly self-aware, deeply loving, in therapy, reading all the books, trying your absolute hardest - and still turn into a completely different person the second your relationship gets hard.Maybe you start explaining yourself, clarifying and clarifying. Or, maybe you shut down and can't find a single word. Maybe you need to fix it RIGHT NOW while your partner needs hours, or days, to process and be ready to talk about it all. Maybe you say “I'm fine” while internally writing a dissertation called Actually, I Am Not Fine At All and I Want You to Notice. Or, maybe you keep having the same fight in different outfits and cannot figure out why you both keep ending up in the exact same place. That is what this episode is about. Welcome to the Attachment Styles episode. This is about looking at yourself closely enough to notice the moves you make automatically when connection gets hard, where those moves came from, and whether they are actually helping you build the relationship you want. Because sometimes, the thing that feels completely reasonable in the moment is also the exact thing keeping the cycle alive - until you notice and name it.Maybe you pursue harder because you want closeness, and your partner pulls away even more. Or perhaps you shut down because you need space, and the other person experiences that as abandonment. Maybe you people-please to keep the peace and then quietly resent everyone involved. Or you wait for your partner to magically know what you need because having to ask somehow makes it feel less meaningful.Good news: None of this means you are doomed at relationships. It means you have patterns. We all do - and once you can actually see yours, you finally have something to work with.In this episode, Deena gets into what attachment styles actually mean in real life, how they show up in conflict, and how two people who genuinely love each other can accidentally create a dynamic that leaves both of them feeling completely misunderstood. You'll walk away knowing how to:Spot your own “protective move” before it takes over the entire conversationUnderstand why you chase, withdraw, defend, over-function, people-please, or go emotionally offlineSay what you actually need instead of turning your needs into a test your partner doesn't know they're takingTake space without abandoning the conversationTake accountability for your impact without shaming yourself for having a historyRepair after conflict in a way that changes the pattern instead of just producing another apologyBuild more security inside yourself and your relationships without becoming some perfectly regulated robot who never gets triggeredThis episode will also be the accountability nudge you might just need to grow. Because understanding yourself isn't about giving yourself a new excuse; “I have an anxious attachment style” isn't a free pass to make your partner responsible for regulating every uncomfortable feeling. “I shut down during conflict” doesn't mean everyone around you has to accept that hard conversations never happen. Your history can explain your reactions, without getting to run the whole damn show. This is where the power is.You'll leave this episode empowered - with the new skill of being able to catch the moment where the old pattern usually takes over and ask, “Do I actually want to do this again?” You get to stop making the same move and being shocked when you land in the same place. Learn how to stay connected without disappearing inside the relationship, how to ask for what you need without abandoning yourself, and how to move through conflict without treating every hard moment like proof that something is fundamentally wrong. So if you've ever thought, “Why am I like this in relationships?” or “Why do we keep having this SAME fight?” this episode is your map. Relationship patterns are learned - they're practiced, they can feel automatic as hell. BUT they do not get the final say. This episode is about growing and healing, and it'll transform your current relationships - with others, and yourself.Produced by Dear MediaSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Growing up, Eliza learned that having a stable job meant you were doing well—and that people who didn't have one could be viewed as lazy or unable to get their lives together. She also missed an important developmental stage: the freedom to discover what she liked, who she was, and how she naturally wanted to express herself. Now, through raising her own children, Eliza has an opportunity to give herself something she didn't receive: permission to discover herself without pressure. Together, Christine and Eliza explore identity, people-pleasing, parenting, boundaries, self-worth, generational patterns, and the difference between who you truly are and the roles you play in the world. If you've ever thought, "I should know what I want by now," or felt ashamed because your career doesn't look the way you thought it would, this episode offers a powerful invitation: stop forcing yourself to have the answer and allow yourself to enter a season of discovery. Press play to explore how reconnecting with your authentic self may bring far more clarity than trying to force yourself into another role. Consider / Ask Yourself Do you feel pressure to have your career or next chapter figured out? Was your worth growing up connected to achievement, productivity, or having a "good" job? Are you making choices based on what you genuinely want—or what you believe other people will approve of? Did you have the freedom as a child to discover your interests, preferences, and authentic self? Have you confused your job, career, or other roles with your identity? Where might people-pleasing be making it harder to hear your own desires? Key Insights and A-Ha's Not knowing what you want doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with you. You may never have been given enough space to discover it. When worth becomes tied to productivity or employment, career uncertainty can trigger deep shame. Feelings can be powerful without necessarily being facts. Missing a developmental stage in childhood can create patterns that continue showing up in adulthood. Parenting can provide an opportunity to reparent ourselves alongside our children. Moving from authoritarian parenting to overly permissive parenting doesn't necessarily break the pattern; healthy boundaries still matter. People-pleasing makes discovering yourself difficult because so much energy is spent monitoring what everyone else wants. Setting boundaries doesn't mean you're dishonoring someone else's feelings or desires. A career can be one expression of who you are, but it does not have to define your identity. Sometimes clarity comes after discovery—not before it. How to Deepen the Work Give yourself permission to put the pressure of finding the "right" job aside for now. Consider this season a discovery process rather than a problem you need to solve. As your children explore what they enjoy, allow their curiosity and playfulness to reconnect you with younger parts of yourself. Notice the qualities, interests, and forms of expression that begin coming back online. Practice stronger boundaries while remembering that honoring someone else's desires doesn't mean always giving them what they want. Notice when you're making a decision because you're afraid someone will be disappointed in you. Explore who you are through your qualities and authentic expression rather than through your job title. Release guilt or shame around making a self-honoring choice that works for your family during this stage of your life. A Powerful Reframe on Identity Christine offers Eliza a helpful metaphor for separating identity from the roles we play. Think of your authentic identity as water. Your roles—mother, wife, teacher, coach, podcaster, employee, entrepreneur, or anything else—are the different glasses that hold that water. The glasses can change. You are the water, not the glass. Instead of asking a job to give you an identity, begin by discovering the authentic version of yourself. Then ask: What roles allow that version of me to express itself? When your child's behavior pushes your buttons, it can be hard to stay calm. Why Your Child's Behavior Triggers You So Much And How to Stop Reacting explores the nervous system behind reactivity, with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge's Regulation First Parenting™ expertise.Have you ever snapped at your child and immediately wondered, “Why did that upset me so much?” Their behavior may be activating your own nervous system before your thinking brain has a chance to respond. In this episode, let me explain how to break the reactivity cycle. You'll learn how to pause, regulate, and respond with more calm and connection instead of reacting from overwhelm. Why does my child's behavior trigger me so much? When your child rolls their eyes, talks back, melts down, or completely loses it, your nervous system may interpret the behavior as disrespect, danger, manipulation, or failure. Suddenly, you're flooded—and responding from your own dysregulation. This doesn't mean you're a bad parent. Your reactions may be connected to old stress patterns, childhood experiences, beliefs about how children “should” behave, or simply being completely maxed out.Notice what your child's behavior brings up in you.Ask, “Is this actually a threat, or does it feel like one?”Remember: behavior is often a signal of dysregulation. Why does my child melt down at home but behave at school? Some children hold everything together at school because they are coping, masking, or trying hard to appear “fine.” Then they come home to the place where they feel safest—and everything falls apart. That can feel personal. But your child isn't necessarily doing this to you. They may be releasing an overloaded nervous system in the environment where they finally feel safe enough to let go.Look at patterns instead of taking the behavior personally.Notice what happens before the meltdown.Remember that home may be your child's safe place, not the cause of the problem. How can I stop reacting when my child is dysregulated? You cannot effectively co-regulate your child while your own nervous system is highly activated. The goal isn't to never get triggered. It's to create space between the trigger and your reaction.I want to emphasize the importance of love pause: a simple three-second pause to breathe or regulate before responding. You might use a heart hug, humming, tapping, or another calming strategy that works for you.Pause before yelling or lecturing.Notice: “My body is activated right now.”Take three seconds—or longer if you need it.Then connect, teach, and correct from a calmer state.Real-life example: Your child starts melting down over something that seems tiny. Instead of matching their intensity, you pause, breathe, regulate, and then respond. That small pause can change what happens next.Yelling less and staying calm isn't about being perfect—it's about having the right tools.Join the Dysregulation Insider VIP list and get your FREE Regulation Rescue Kit, designed to help you handle oppositional behaviors without losing it.Download it now at www.drroseann.com/newsletterCan I break the cycle of reactive parenting?Yes. The nervous system learns through repetition. Every time you interrupt an automatic reaction and practice regulation, you create a different response pattern.Calm is contagious. Dysregulation is contagious, too. When parents become calmer, children have more opportunity to feel safe and regulate themselves.

Is wrestling with your kids actually good for them? The tackling. The chasing. The wrestling matches on the living room floor. The pillow fights. The laughter that eventually ends with somebody yelling, "Do it again!" It might look like you're simply having fun, but healthy physical play can also create opportunities for connection, trust, boundaries, self-control, and quality time between parents and children. In Episode 314 of the Family Meeting Podcast, Thomas and Lysandra Osterkamp talk about the positive impact roughhousing and wrestling can have on the parent-child relationship and why parents shouldn't underestimate the importance of getting on the floor and playing with their kids. In this episode, we discuss: How roughhousing can strengthen the parent-child relationship. Why physical play can create connection and build trust. How wrestling gives kids opportunities to practice self-control. Teaching children to recognize and respect physical boundaries. Why kids need positive interactions with parents that aren't centered on correction. How to make roughhousing safe, appropriate, and fun. Healthy roughhousing also gives parents an opportunity to teach something important: there are boundaries even when you're having fun. When someone says stop, you stop. When someone gets hurt, you check on them. You learn how much force is appropriate. You pay attention to whether the other person is still having fun. You learn that being stronger doesn't give you permission to ignore someone else's boundaries. And sometimes the biggest benefit is much simpler. Your kids get YOU. They get your attention. Your laughter. Your energy. Your affection. Your time. Parenting can easily become a constant stream of instructions. Get dressed. Do your homework. Clean your room. Stop doing that. Get ready for bed. Your kids need you to lead them and correct them, but they also need to know that you genuinely enjoy being with them. Sometimes building a stronger relationship with your child means putting down your phone, getting on the floor, and playing with them. What if parenting wasn't primarily about getting our kids to behave—but about shaping the messages they believe about themselves, about us, and about God? In this episode of Parenting Practicals, I'm joined by fellow Connected Families Certified Parent Coach Laura Way to go back to the basics and walk through the Connected Families Framework. This framework guides all of our Parenting Practicals conversations, so whether you're new to the series or have been listening for a while, this episode will help you understand what's behind the tools and strategies we share. Together, we unpack the four core messages we want our children to experience through our parenting: You are safe with me. You are loved no matter what. You are called and capable. You are responsible. We talk about looking beneath behavior, recognizing the strengths that may be showing up "sideways," coaching our kids before correcting them, and approaching correction as an opportunity for restoration rather than punishment. And perhaps most importantly, we remember that these aren't just messages we offer our children—they reflect the way our compassionate Heavenly Father meets us, too. If you're longing for parenting that builds trust, connection, purpose, skills, and wisdom—not perfect behavior—this conversation is a great place to start. Connected Families is a ministry providing biblically grounded, research-informed help for everyday parenting. Ask Rachel anythingHas your teenager come home upset because their friends have suddenly turned against them? Or have you heard that your child is part of a group chat where everyone is being urged to stop talking to someone? When a friendship conflict spreads through a whole group—and onto social media—it can be hard for parents to know what to say, when to step in, and how to help without making things worse. In this episode of Teenagers Untangled, I'm joined by Dr Dominique Thompson, a physician and expert in supporting young people, to explore why teenagers can be so quick to exclude someone, and why it can feel so difficult to stand apart from the group. We talk about the role of peer pressure, black-and-white thinking and social media—and the difference between challenging hurtful behavior and shaming someone. If your child is being ostracized, you'll hear how to support them, work with the school and help them find other sources of connection. And if you're worried your teen might be joining in, we discuss how to start a conversation that encourages empathy without simply lecturing or blaming them. We'll also share practical ways to make home a safe place for difficult conversations—and a simple question that might help a young person pause before they join a pile-on.If this piece has raised anything difficult for you or your child, Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123 (UK).If you want to read Rachel's expanded thoughts on this topic, click hereDr Dominique ThompsonSupport the showPlease hit the follow button if you like the podcast, and share it with anyone who might benefit. You can review us on Apple podcasts by going to the show page, scrolling down to the bottom where you can click on a star then you can leave your message. Please don't hesitate to seek the advice of a specialist if you're not coping.
