In this episode, Trace Blackmore welcomes back Tom Hutchison, Chairman of the Board, HOH Water Technology, to reflect on what it really takes to step out of day-to-day leadership—and do it well. As a multi-decade leader in water treatment, Tom shares the personal, professional, and organizational insights that shaped his transition from CEO to chairman and what it means to lead a business into its next generation. From early succession conversations to the unspoken anxieties of staff, Hutch offers a rare look behind the curtain of legacy-building in industrial water treatment. And as private equity plays a growing role in the industry, Tom unpacks the very real choices facing owners and teams alike—with clarity and compassion. Navigating Leadership Through Change Tom begins by describing the decision to shift from day-to-day leadership to a board-level role. He reflects on the emotional weight of that process and the internal work required to detach his identity from his title. Rather than clinging to authority, he outlines the importance of trust and letting emerging leaders find their voice—even when it means they'll make different decisions. He also highlights the human cost of poor planning. “Death,” as Tom puts it bluntly, “is not a strategy.” Waiting too long or failing to mentor successors doesn't just disrupt the business—it risks unraveling everything you've built. Succession Planning and Cultural Continuity Trace and Tom dive into the mechanics of succession planning—not just from an ownership perspective, but a cultural one. Tom explains how HOH built an internal environment where values weren't just posted on the wall but deeply lived. This foundation allowed the company to navigate major transitions, including its eventual move into private equity, without losing its identity. He also warns about the consequences of delayed planning. Waiting too long, he says, puts the business, its people, and its principles at risk. Preparing for Private Equity—Without Losing Yourself One of the most practical parts of the conversation centers on HOH's private equity journey. Tom shares how they vetted buyers not just for financial capacity, but for cultural alignment. He outlines how his team clarified their mission and values before the deal, which ultimately helped preserve their vision after the transition. Rather than resist change, HOH treated the shift as an opportunity to reinforce their core—while expanding their reach. The Long Arc of Legacy Tom closes with a powerful meditation on leadership legacy. He explains that real legacy isn't about being remembered—it's about ensuring the business can thrive without you. He challenges listeners to think beyond titles, financial outcomes, or even strategy, and focus on the enduring impact of culture, mentorship, and examples. Trace echoes this with a reminder that great leaders not only lead—they leave well. If you're leading a team, planning your exit, or preparing the next generation of leadership, this episode is a must-listen. What differentiates successful entrepreneurs from those who struggle or fail? According to Daryl Urbanski, it comes down to eight critical success factors he's identified after interviewing more than 600 high-performing business owners.Daryl's own path reads like a masterclass in entrepreneurial evolution. From humble beginnings shoveling Canadian driveways, he transformed into a business growth specialist who helped NeuroGym generate $1.6 million in just six months (which expanded to $7.5 million within three years). His approach has always been evidence-based - investing over $50,000 in research to identify the patterns that consistently produce results. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Daryl breaks down the difference between simply "doing the work" and actually "running a business." Many entrepreneurs fail to recognize that delivering a service is only one component of running a successful operation. As he explains: "When you go to McDonald's, they never say the drive-thru's closed because Sally's got a cold." This illuminates why some technically skilled professionals struggle to scale beyond their own capacity.Perhaps most valuable is Daryl's strategic blueprint for building a six-figure business in just 90 days. Rather than focusing on low-ticket, high-volume offerings, he advocates identifying high-value solutions you can genuinely deliver, proving the concept through pre-sales, and maximizing face-to-face interactions with potential clients. "It's easier to make income selling $10,000 items than $10 items," he notes, reminding us that the effort to make a sale often remains similar regardless of price point. The episode culminates with profound insight into what truly sets successful entrepreneurs apart - their relationship with time. Daryl maintains strict discipline around time management, scheduling his day in 30-minute blocks and eliminating distractions that most people consider normal. His recitation of Arnold Bennett's poem on the finite nature of our daily 24 hours serves as both inspiration and warning: "We shall never have any more time. We have, and we have always had, all the time there is."Ready to transform your business through automation and strategic growth? From logistics nightmares to groundbreaking special editions, Brandon Lowe takes us behind the scenes of Squadron's evolution into a new era for model enthusiasts. After logging countless miles between trade shows and completing their tenth move in twenty years, Squadron has finally settled into their Chattanooga headquarters, transforming their operation and expanding their customer offerings. The relocation story reveals why shipping logistics became the primary driver behind Squadron's move. "If we had to pick one reason to move, that was it," Brandon explains, detailing how the small-town postal facilities in Ellijay simply couldn't handle their volume. Now with dedicated large-vehicle pickups daily, Squadron can focus on growth rather than delivery headaches. After a year of transition, Squadron's 2,500 square foot retail space is now welcoming visitors Monday through Friday. For many customers, seeing the warehouse's 20,000 square feet of inventory has become an experience in itself: "It was kind of funny. He had been there for a good little while, so I just said, 'hey, would you like to see the warehouse?'... and I took him to the other 20,000 square feet beyond the 2,000 he was looking at."The conversation shifts to Squadron's innovative community-building initiatives. Their Eagle Club provides enhanced benefits including reduced shipping thresholds, while a private Facebook group connects customers sharing projects and techniques. Brandon's philosophy shines through: "Hopefully it becomes a community of modeling friendship."The most exciting revelation concerns Squadron's groundbreaking partnership with the IPMS Nationals host chapter. For the first time ever, they're creating official convention exclusive model kits featuring the show logo. The first announced exclusive, a MiniArt P-47D Razorback, represents something completely new for the hobby. "I hope that it helps the show in general, in the sense that there's something here that I can only get here," Brandon explains, drawing parallels to comic convention exclusives.Through shipping challenges, tariff uncertainties, and continuous innovation, Brandon's passion for the modeling community remains unwavering: "The customers in the hobby industry are some of the nicest, most understanding people I have ever met." Visit Squadron's retail space, tune into their Wednesday night livestreams, or meet them at the IPMS Nationals to experience firsthand how they're reshaping the hobby landscape.SQUADRON Adding to the stash since 1968Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. “You don't have to transition your entire business. You just need to start. Small beginnings are okay.” Revolutionizing Water Treatment Through Smart Tech In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore welcomes Kevin Kuhne, Founder and President of Energy Resource Products, LLC, for a deep-dive conversation on the emerging role of smart technology and artificial intelligence in water treatment. With decades of experience leading tech-driven innovation, Kevin unpacks how intelligent systems, edge computing, and real-time data processing are reshaping operations in the field—from cooling towers to complex distribution networks. Whether you're managing plant performance or driving strategic growth, this episode offers a credible look into the future of industrial water management. From Controllers to Edge-Based Intelligence Kevin introduces the evolution of traditional controllers into what he calls “computers at the edge.” These intelligent systems collect real-time data, deliver predictive alerts, and can execute secure firmware updates—all without requiring field visits. This shift eliminates the dependency on gateways and streamlines site management through centralized dashboards, saving time and resources. He illustrates how these systems not only detect pump failures before they occur but also reduce chemical overdosing incidents by offering immediate visibility into feeder issues and sensor discrepancies. Breaking the Barrier: Selling Smart Tech to Stakeholders One of the recurring challenges in adopting new technology is overcoming skepticism—especially from IT teams and procurement stakeholders. Kevin outlines strategies for simplifying the sales conversation: focus on specific ROI outcomes like labor savings, chemical usage reduction, and improved equipment uptime. He also breaks down how modern security protocols and machine-to-machine communication are easing concerns around connectivity and data protection. AI and the Cloud: Turning Data into Action The discussion advances into how AI-enabled platforms now process disparate data streams in the cloud to support smarter decision-making. Rather than waiting for weekly reports, professionals can now access dynamic dashboards and build customized data visualizations to proactively manage client sites from any location. Kevin emphasizes that this shift empowers service professionals, not replaces them. By removing manual data bottlenecks, smart tech allows for more impactful engagement and long-term client retention. Future-Proofing the Industry Kevin predicts a near future where IO configurations fade, sensors become brand-agnostic, and user interfaces resemble common mobile apps. He encourages water professionals to begin small—pilot smart technology in a single location, gather feedback, and use those wins to accelerate broader adoption. He closes with a message for early-career professionals: embracing smart technology from the start will enable them to deliver higher value and grow their impact in the industry. Conclusion As industries move toward intelligent infrastructure, water professionals must adapt. This episode provides a grounded, expert-led perspective on how to practically and securely implement these technologies. For technical managers, engineers, and company leaders, this is a timely and strategic conversation you won't want to miss. Stay engaged, keep learning, and continue scaling up your knowledge! If we're not doing it, someone else will.” “Security is the real roadblock, but if the equipment has a computer-type base of operation, IT is far more comfortable.” “Smart tech is identifying those areas that we can enhance information, translate it, and then act on it.” Connect with Kevin Kuhne Phone: 17632263945 Email: kevin@energyresourceproducts.com Website: www.energyresourceproducts.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kevin-kuhne-1812626 Click HERE to Download Episode's Discussion Guide Guest Resources Mentioned 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos: Jordan B. "Certainly an exciting time for data centers, private and public alike, isn't it?" This opening remark from Tom Croll of Lionfish Tech Advisors set the stage for a compelling discussion with Ryan Mallory, President and COO of Flexential, on the recent episode of the Tech Transformed podcast. The speakers discuss the current AI scenario's impact on data centers, high-density computing, and cloud infrastructure. This is where Flexential comes in. Mallory stresses the importance of trust and verification in AI deployment, especially regarding security and data privacy, which Flexential has established a reputation for.“How to adapt to the AI boom?” is one question everyone's asking, Mallory says. From a service provider perspective, it's a "proverbial gold rush" for powered land. This is essential for building the relevant AI infrastructure that will serve as early entry points. Flexential's survey reveals that a staggering "90% of people surveyed are contemplating an AI strategy." The number spotlights the widespread interest and impending demand. “This isn't a short-term trend,” says Mallory. He also projects a "12-year" development cycle for AI infrastructure, emphasizing the long-term commitment required from the industry.Scaling Up for AIThe unprecedented growth in AI demands specialized infrastructure, especially concerning the sustainable use of AI and running data centers, and strong strategies for scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Flexential is uniquely positioned to meet this challenge. "We've been developing high-performance compute facilities for over 10 years," he states. Their "Gen 4 and Gen 5 sites can cool 50 kilowatts per cabinet air-cooled." This information has allowed them to readily support the requirements of H100 and H200 type deployments, not just for service providers, but also for ramping deployments in the healthcare and financial sectors.Looking ahead, the data center industry is preparing for even higher-density racks and the widespread adoption of liquid cooling. While "all of our sites are liquid-cooled ready," Mallory says, thorough airflow studies and CFD analysis show liquid cooling is genuinely necessary. Flexential's air-cooled solutions are already handling "high-dense pods for some of the companies that have recently gone public and other companies that are out there that you hear about in this AI service provider realm,” Mallory added. Takeaways90% of surveyed companies are considering an AI strategy. The AI industry is experiencing a gold rush for infrastructure.Data centers must adapt to high-density computing demands.Liquid cooling is essential for high-performance AI deployments.AI regulations are shaping how data centers operate.Trust but verify is crucial for AI deployment.AI democratization is vital for businesses of all sizes.Flexential is focused on providing scalable AI infrastructure.Security policies are essential for protecting sensitive data.AI can enhance productivity, but it requires human oversight.Chapters00:00 The Impact of AI on Data Centers02:51 Infrastructure Challenges and Solutions05:59 Navigating AI Regulations and Security08:59 Democratization of AI for...
Scaling-up the business is a dream of every Entrepreneur. Yet research shows only 4% of Business Owners are able to grow and scale-up their businesses.Working with Entrepreneurs and Business owners for the last 22 plus years, supporting them scale-up their businesses, I have observed that Scaling-up is a possibility for every business - if we execute a winning strategy. Am sharing here the 4 steps involved in a successful scale up journey:1. Setting the Direction - It's about setting the compass; defining where to play - in terms of products / services, customer segment, price point, ticket size, Geography. And defining how to play - the differentiator, competitive advantage, answering why us, leading to clarity on direction, the road-map and milestones.2. Facilitating Enablements - building necessary competencies and capabilities within the business, acquiring and building required talent, creating an organisation structure, an appropriate roles & responsibility structure that would support the journey, and provide clarity to the team.3. Carrying out the Reviews - Setting up appropriate review systems within the business at frequent intervals at multiple levels to take stock of what's happening and make course corrections as required pro-actively.4. Maintaining Fitness - Avoiding fat in the belly, Creating and maintaining fitness amongst the people, the functions, the processes, thus avoiding accumulation of fat at wrong places and remaining healthy as a business.Once we consciously plan and execute these steps, Scaleup happens!Business Owners could create a support system around them to facilitate the Scale-up journey - including working with a Scaleup Coach and building the relevant Scaleup leadership skills with the help of a Scaleup Coach. My name is PK NarayananWishing you the best, Thank you.#ceo #scaleup #business #leadership

We are reaching back into the archive to revisit a conversation from 2019 with Steven Marks, the co-founder and CEO of Guzman y Gomez. This was one of the most electric conversations of the early years of the show. Steven shared his passion for food, brand, technology, and most of all, people—with a clarity and energy that defined him as a founder on a mission. At the time of this recording, GYG had around 130 stores. Steven was founder-CEO, still obsessing over every ingredient, every system, every hire. They had global ambition, but the U.S. was still a dream, the IPO was years away, and COVID hadn't yet tested the foundations of hospitality businesses everywhere. We'll be sitting down with Steven again soon for a follow-up episode covering everything that's happened since 2019. But before we do, here's where it all began. Even if you have heard this episode before, or if you are new to Scaling Up since then, this is a must-listen-to episode full of nuggets that will not only act as a great primer for our next episode, but will also leave you in awe of his energy and passion.Enjoy this re-release of one of our most-loved early episodes—with Steven Marks of Guzman y Gomez.

In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore interviews Jake Deak, Marketing & Inside Sales Director at Pyxis Lab, for a deep dive into how innovation is born—not in labs, but in the field. Jake shares the story of Pyxis Lab's rapid evolution from a lean, hands-on team to an industry leader in developing smart, user-informed water treatment technology. Building Solutions from Real-World Problems Jake Deak's journey began during the pandemic, stepping into a role shaped by both legacy and urgency. Working closely with his father and the Pyxis team, he reveals how their approach centers around listening intently to water treatment professionals and designing products that directly solve the problems they face. From the ST500 sensor to the OxiPanel, Jake breaks down how each product starts with a call from the field—an operator struggling with membrane fouling, or a technician frustrated by unreliable chlorine measurements. Pyxis doesn't stop at fixing problems; it uses those challenges as fuel for continuous R&D cycles, bringing hardware, firmware, and app-based solutions to life. Innovation Through Collaboration and Core Values The success of Pyxis Lab isn't just about technology—it's about a culture deeply rooted in empathy and real-world experience. Jacob discusses the importance of maintaining strong core values and explains how hiring practices focused on field expertise led to better tools and better service for end users. From Product Development to Media Innovation Leveraging his media background, Jacob also reveals the upcoming launch of Pyxis Lab's new podcast, "In The Flow." Created to foster industry education and dialogue, this initiative underscores the company's commitment to advancing the water treatment profession through open communication and shared knowledge. A Clear Takeaway If there's one message that defines this episode, it's that the best innovations don't begin in isolation—they begin with a conversation. Whether it's a technician venting a daily frustration or a field team asking “what if?”, Pyxis Lab listens and acts. And as Jake reminds us, the future belongs to those who adapt, engage, and stay relentlessly curious. Conclusion Jacob Deak exemplifies the spirit of innovation that is reshaping the water treatment industry. Through passion, practicality, and persistence, his work at Pyxis Lab offers a compelling model for how technology and human experience can work hand in hand to create better solutions for water professionals worldwide. With decades of experience working with businesses from startups to industry giants, Scott cuts through the noise with a refreshingly honest take: "Your website is not your business. Your business is your customer acquisition strategy."The hard truth is that entrepreneurship isn't for everyone. While countless YouTube videos promise "start your Shopify store in 3 minutes," Scott reveals why success actually takes years of consistent effort and strategic pivoting. He outlines a three-pronged approach to customer acquisition that works for new stores: start with SEO from day one, implement Google Shopping ads, and develop a remarketing strategy to stay top-of-mind.Most importantly, Scott challenges store owners to stop treating their websites as product catalogs and instead transform them into decision-making engines that guide customers to the perfect purchase. Welcome back to The DC Beer Show, your hub for all things craft beer across DC, Maryland, and Virginia! This episode, we welcome Tasha Dixon from Ardent Craft Ales in Richmond, Virginia, for a lively conversation packed with brewing insights, local flavor, and community celebrations. The show kicks off with the crew sharing what's in their glasses—expect shout-outs to Trillium's foeder-aged lager, Ardent's Bohemian Pilsner and IPA 14, and a juicy Kolsch from Bearchase. Tasha dives into Ardent's brewing philosophy, revealing the story behind their flagship IPA 14 (it's all about that 14th, all-Citra batch!) and the magic of scaling up their canning operations with a lean, cross-trained team. If you've ever wondered what it takes to juggle 12- and 16-ounce cans or wrangle small-batch innovation into a flagship core lineup, this behind-the-scenes peek is for you!Get ready for some hop talk as Tasha explains the role of Yakima Chief's Cryo Pop hops in Ardent's vibrant “Pop!” pale ale, and dishes on tweaking recipes for maximum aroma on a budget. The episode takes a fun detour into cannabis-inspired brewing, with Tasha describing her forays into terpene beers—think Pineapple Express and Winner Winner. While there's no THC or CBD involved (yet, Virginia law!), these botanic brews deliver big “wow” factor and bring curious crowds into the taproom. The conversation also digs into the resilience and evolution of the Richmond beer scene. Tasha speaks candidly about recent brewery closures in the area, the pressures of leases, and the importance of community support—plus what makes Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood such a vibrant, collaborative hotspot for breweries, cideries, and distilleries. With Pride Month upon us, Tasha shares how Ardent and their Scotts Addition neighbors are teaming up for a Pride Bar Crawl, with special releases (including a berry seltzer called “Berry Proud”), passports, and proceeds benefiting Richmond Habitat for Humanity's Pride Build. Expect plenty of events throughout June and again for Virginia Pride in September, all designed to foster inclusion and celebration across the community. As always, our hosts shout out coming events in DC and the broader DMV, including Womxn's Brew Culture Club meetups at Denizens, a members-only beer share at Sovereign, and the Wheatland Spring Land Beer Fest (hello, Tre Fontane!). They also salute longtime Richmond beer fans—special birthday cheers to Frank Chang!—and encourage everyone to experience Richmond's hospitality, food, and ever-evolving beer scene. The episode wraps up with a heartfelt toast to closed and closing breweries, the promise of more openings ahead, and the enduring truth: Beer always helps. “Keep it simple because the more complex things get, the less people will do it” - Gary Garcia For years, water treatment professionals have relied on PTSA tracers to estimate system performance, but emerging technologies are offering clearer, more direct answers. In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore welcome once again returning guest Garret "Gary" S. Garcia of Masters Company, now a business unit of MFG Chemical to explore how fluorescent tagged polymers are revolutionizing the way water treaters monitor system health and chemical performance. With decades of expertise, Gary offers practical insights into this game-changing technology. Why Tagged Polymers Matter Trace and Gary discuss the limitations of relying solely on PTSA tracers, a method that only indicates product presence rather than active ingredient performance. Gary explains how fluorescent tagged polymers, by chemically bonding the fluorophore to the polymer backbone, provide a direct and reliable measure of active polymer concentration, helping water treaters make more informed service decisions. Instrumentation and Integration Challenges Listeners will gain a practical understanding of how to implement tagged polymer technology. Gary outlines how existing probes and meters compare, what calibration and integration may look like, and whether both PTSA and tagged polymers can be used together. He also explains why tagged polymers are especially useful in systems impacted by iron, cationic biocides, or inconsistent load demands. Real-World Applications and Benefits Tagged polymers make it possible to move beyond "set-it-and-forget-it" dosing practices. Gary discusses how accurate polymer monitoring can reduce overfeeding, optimize chemical performance, and improve system health. For both QC in manufacturing and daily service checks, these tools offer better visibility into what's really happening inside the system. The Simplicity of Switching Gary highlights the ease of adopting tagged polymers – often a direct drop-in with no reformulation needed. For water treaters, that means minimal disruption and an immediate opportunity to upgrade their programs. Conclusion Fluorescent tagged polymers are not just another tool in the toolbox; they represent a critical step forward in water treatment precision and reliability. As Gary notes, understanding and adopting these technologies allows professionals to elevate their programs, save resources, and better serve their customers. Welcome to the second episode in our series about community-level wildfire resilience, supported by Fire Aside! We spoke with Fire Aside CEO and co-founder Jason Brooks about how Fire Aside—a home assessment platform that allows agencies to have direct 1:1 engagement with residents on resilience actions they can take—fits into bigger picture policy, data and decision making around community wildfire resilience in California and beyond.Fire Aside was developed in Marin County, CA alongside the county fire department there, a partnership that was spurred by Jason's own interest in improving the wildfire resilience of his own property and not knowing exactly where to start. That was in 2020—now, Fire Aside is being used by over 100 departments in nine states to increase the efficiency of their home assessment processes and improve engagement with residents who want to improve their defensible space and home hardening. It's become clear that increasing resilience actions at the neighborhood level, rather than just the homeowner level, is the best way to meaningfully reduce risk in the WUI, where fires often spread home to home rather than via vegetation; this scale piece is a huge part of what Fire Aside does, and is what makes it such a compelling technology in an era of urban conflagrations like those in LA this winter (or Boulder, Lahaina, Paradise etc before). Jason and I spoke about the impetus for developing the platform, as well as how it can potentially be utilized to help inform decision making and even funding needs at the city or county level. Down the road, the data procured from Fire Aside may even be useful in informing state policy or other big picture decision making. (Disclaimer: Fire Aside does not own any of the data that is compiled through the app/platform. Residents and departments using the platform own this data.)We appreciate Fire Aside's work and their support of this series on community resilience—if you or your organization are responsible for wildfire risk assessments, we really can't recommend this technology enough. A few action items!Consider following Fire Aside on Linkedin. Check out some Fire Aside testimonials on Youtube. Slightly unrelated but please consider supporting justice and exoneration for firefighter Brian "Hakiym" Simpson. You can read about the case here. You can sign the petition here, or donate to a local mutual aid organization supporting Hakiym here.

Implementing Entrepreneurial Operating Systems (EOS) in Your Business with Derek Newcomer Have you ever felt like you were great at your craft—but struggling to build a real business around it? You're not alone. In this episode of The Profit Answer Man, we talk to someone who lived that exact journey and came out stronger for it. Meet Derek Newcomer—a former fitness entrepreneur who learned the hard way that being a great coach isn't enough. Today, he's a certified EOS Implementer guiding business owners to gain control, clarity, and consistent results using the Entrepreneurial Operating System. If you're a business owner feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to delegate without chaos, this episode is your wake-up call. Derek's story is proof that you can align your vision, structure your team, and scale without losing your mind—or your money. In This Episode, You Will Learn: Why being great at your craft doesn't mean you're great at running a business. The hard lessons Derek learned about delegation, leadership, and control. How EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) became the framework that changed everything. The step-by-step process he uses to help teams execute on vision without burning out. Why "letting go of the vine" is one of the hardest—and most profitable—moves you'll ever make. Key Takeaways: Don't Confuse Skill with Strategy: Derek was a top-tier fitness coach, but success in business required a whole new skill set—systems, delegation, and financial discipline. Delegation Requires Process, Not Just Trust: One of Derek's biggest mistakes was failing to train his team with structured systems. He learned the power of documenting what works and holding others accountable to results. Vision Without Execution Is a Fantasy: EOS helped him—and now his clients—translate big goals into daily actions that actually move the needle. Pain Leads to Clarity: Derek's business struggles became the training ground for the financial and operational clarity he now brings to his clients. Entrepreneurs Need Coaches Too: EOS Implementers act as that strategic, outside perspective to keep business owners out of the weeds and focused on growth. About Derek Newcomer: Derek Newcomer is a Certified EOS Implementer who's guided over 20 companies through more than 225 full-day EOS sessions. With a background in fitness coaching, leadership development, and executive coaching, Derek brings a unique mix of hands-on experience and strategic insight. He combines business systems, leadership development, and personal growth to help entrepreneurs lead well, scale effectively, and build businesses that serve their lives—not consume them. Conclusion: Ready to Work On Your Business Instead of In It? This episode is more than just a story—it's a roadmap. If Derek's journey resonated with you, maybe it's time to evaluate your own systems, margins, and team accountability. Want help? What if the most powerful move you could make as a founder is to stop being the one doing it all?Today's episode explores the mindset shift that turns your business from a job into a scalable, valuable system. Bill is joined by legendary entrepreneur and author Michael E. Gerber to discuss why strategically working on the business, not in it, is the single most important shift a founder can make. Special Guest Carly Pepin https://www.westcoastgrowthadvisors.com/podcast-gift In this episode, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Carly Pepin—an extraordinary business strategist and mindset expert—who helps founders and C-suite teams scale their companies not just with numbers, but with heart, purpose, and clarity. What stood out most in our conversation was Carly's view that business is not just a money-making vehicle—it's a personal development journey. I couldn't agree more. She works primarily with leaders in construction, hospitality, and manufacturing, helping them navigate growth by aligning strategic frameworks with powerful psychological insights. We talked in depth about her comprehensive approach, which focuses on four core areas: cash, strategy, execution, and people. But the game-changer? Carly brings in the lens of psychology. She explains how emotional equilibrium—the constant dance between pride and shame—can drive or derail a company's success. When leaders understand this, they can make better decisions, stay grounded, and build stronger teams. One of my favorite moments was when Carly shared how culture isn't just about values on a wall—it's about recognizing those values in action. I loved her example of a Polaroid wall showcasing team wins. These small practices create real emotional alignment and reinforce a sense of purpose. We also explored why many businesses stall. Often, it's not about cash flow—it's about misaligned vision, unclear strategy, or unaddressed mindset blocks like imposter syndrome. Carly's method digs deep to reveal the real obstacles, not just the surface-level symptoms. Key Takeaways from My Conversation with Carly: Business growth starts with delivering true value — not just chasing profit. Scaling requires both strategy and inner alignment with your team and yourself. Emotional dynamics like pride and shame are always at play — learn to recognize and balance them. You don't have to have it all figured out — but having a coach helps you see what's really going on. A misalignment in people or execution might look like a cash problem — but it's not.

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is John Anderson. What happens when the rockstar lifestyle starts to feel more like a death sentence than a dream? For John, the parties, the wealth, and the wine cellar full of excuses were all just masks for something much darker. He had it all—or so it seemed—until two tragic losses and one haunting realization stopped him in his tracks: If I don't change, I'm next. This is a conversation about money, privilege, and the moment you realize that real wealth isn't what's in your bank account—it's in the life you choose to live. John Anderson is a lifelong business strategist and entrepreneur. Through his published book Replace Retirement: Living Your Legacy in the Exponential Age, and in his coaching business Anderson shares his passion for living the second half of life better than the first half. For 30 years he has coached CEOs and executive teams in developing clear, measurable goals underpinned with structures and insights to achieve both professional and personal success. Anderson's entrepreneurial spirit has guided much of his professional life starting in the office furniture industry where he built, then sold, a leading office furniture dealership. He was the first coach to work with Verne Harnish, during the time Harnish developed Scaling Up, now considered one of the leading executive coaching organizations. Anderson is active in corporate speaking and coaching and has equity in a variety of entrepreneurial companies. The focus of his current work is developing holistic plans for individual executives utilizing the Exponential Leader Practice. In the late 90's John Anderson founded the Detroit Chapter of the Entrepreneurs Organization, was recognized by Michigan's Future 50 award, “Today's Workplace of Tomorrow” award, and in Crain's list of Forty under Forty. He served on the Leadership Oakland board, the Oakland County Business Roundtable and is considered one of the most networked entrepreneurs in the region. Anderson started his career with IBM.

Starting a business is a big decision, and people do it for different reasons. Maybe you have a passion you really care about, or you just want more freedom in how you spend your time. For some, it's about doing something different from the usual 9-to-5 job and having control over their own path. But what does it really take to start a business—and is passion enough to keep you going? In this episode, I have Clara Ansel, CEO and Founder of Business Powerhouse. Clara shares valuable insights into managing business growth sustainably without burning out. The conversation delves into the importance of having a clear destination or 'Point B,' the role of mindset in business success, and practical steps to avoid chaos and inefficiency. Clara also discusses the significance of decluttering one's mind and surroundings, actionable advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, and her personal journey from corporate consultancy to empowering small business owners. Tune in to learn more! --- Listen to the podcast here: Starting and Scaling up a Business with Claire Ansell Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidotes to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. Today, I want to talk to you all about starting and scaling up businesses. Now, perhaps you have your reasons for wanting to start a business and, usually, it's about passion that you have or just the desire to have a life where you have a little bit more autonomy over what you do and when you do it, something other than the corporate life, but maybe you're looking at these processes of starting a business and seeing how daunting the process is, how much it really goes on, especially if you do end up with an investor that expects you to scale or if you personally have the desire to scale because whatever mission you're serving, you're kind of wanting to bring to more or more people. My guest today is Claire Ansell, and she is the CEO and founder of Business Powerhouse and she has some good thoughts about how we could go about managing this whole process without kind of burning out, without kind of ending up doing too much in a more sustainable fashion. --- Claire, welcome to the program. Hey, Stephen. How are you? I'm doing pretty well today. It's actually a nice 70 degrees here. Nice. That's good. Summer is coming. It always feels nice at this time of year. How are you today? I'm pretty good. It's been an exciting day with doing lots of –– actually like in the same realm as what you're talking about. We launched a new kind of series in our hub called Awaken, which is all about mindset so it's pretty exciting to be jumping on here with you today and kind of continuing the conversation. Yeah, and that's a good place to start. We can talk a little bit about mindset because I'm assuming you work with a lot of people who are either starting businesses or have a business and they're just starting to become overwhelmed as their web traffic, their client base, something kind of picks up. Yeah, and I think it doesn't really matter what phase of business you're in, whether you're a startup or a ten-million-dollar business, the reality –– or a hundred-million-dollar business. I mean, I've seen it right up to 600 million. I mean, at some point, a business owner is overwhelmed in chaos and facing that burnout. It's just the reality of the way in which we structure and grow our businesses. Now, given your role in your business, is there any way to prevent that burnout? Is there any way someone that's starting a business now can adopt either a mindset or a set of operational practical you want to start a business but you don't want to burn yourself out? Yeah, 100 percent, and I think one of the biggest pieces the business owners really miss is they don't understand what their point B is. We talk about point A is where you are today and point B is where are you going in the future and that could be at ...

Corrosion control is fundamental to the success of any water treatment program, but how often do we question the limitations of the tools we rely on? In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore welcomes back returning guest Mike Standish, Vice President of Water Additives at MFG Chemical, to explore the evolving role of maleic acid-based corrosion inhibitors in industrial water treatment. Drawing on decades of expertise, Mike shares practical insights into when — and when not — to use these innovative solutions to meet today's complex challenges. Understanding the Corrosion Control Toolbox Mike Standish opens the conversation by reframing corrosion control strategies through the lens of a toolbox analogy. With limited primary approaches — from phosphate-based to organic and metal-based chemistries — the success of corrosion management depends on matching the right tool to the right application. Mike stresses the importance of avoiding overcomplication and focusing on the fundamental chemical pathways for mild steel protection. Organic vs. Inorganic Approaches The discussion turns to the critical differences between organic and inorganic inhibitors. While inorganic phosphates remain cost-effective mainstays, organic phosphonates, including maleic acid-derived materials, offer advantages in high pH, high hardness, and oxidizing environments. Mike emphasizes that “organic” in water treatment bears no relation to natural or sustainable products, a frequent misconception among newcomers to the industry. Why Maleic Acid-Based Inhibitors Matter Maleic acid phosphonates distinguish themselves with exceptional oxidant stability, a feature increasingly necessary as continuous halogenation becomes standard practice. Mike explains the chemistry behind maleic acid derivatives and how the ability to tailor molecular structures creates flexibility for specific field conditions — such as scaling tendencies, pH control, and calcium carbonate formation risks. Best Practices for Application and Measurement Field success with maleic acid-based inhibitors hinges on proper dosage and testing. Mike shares lessons from real-world trials, emphasizing that underfeeding is a common mistake that compromises corrosion rates. Accurate differentiation between orthophosphate and phosphonate concentrations is vital for precise monitoring, and bench testing must closely simulate real-world surface-to-volume ratios to yield reliable predictions. The Future of Corrosion Control In a forward-looking discussion, Mike predicts that industry consolidation will trigger a second wave of entrepreneurial water treatment companies. His vision underscores the ongoing need for technical excellence, adaptability, and innovation in corrosion management practices as the industry evolves. This episode challenges water treatment professionals to rethink their corrosion strategies with a sharper, more informed approach. Maleic acid-based inhibitors are not a universal solution, but when applied thoughtfully, they offer powerful advantages for specific operational demands. Explore more episodes, challenge your assumptions, and lead the way in advancing our industry's standards of technical excellence. Don't forget to subscribe to Scaling UP!
