(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus and Jonathan Clark Pastor charged with converting people through prayer A Baptist pastor in India, Pranjal Bhuyan, who also works as a teacher, was arrested last week in the Northeastern state of Assam following complaints from villagers that he was attempting to convert people through prayers, reports International Christian Concern. Attempting to heal people by praying for them is illegal under the Prevention of Evil Practices Act, enacted in February. This law purportedly wants to create science-based knowledge and a safe environment to protect human health. It also aims to end “evil” and “sinister practices” that lawmakers believe thrive on ignorance and people's ill health. The law criminalizes practices resorting to “magical healing” (prayers) and stipulates a three-year jail term and a fine for violations. Christian leaders believe the legislation is ultimately an attempt to restrict and curb the spread of Christianity in Assam. Pastor Bhuyan now holds the dubious distinction of being the first person to be arrested under this law. According to Open Doors, India is the 11th most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. British young people are advocating for the unborn BBC One aired a documentary last week called “Young, British, and Anti-Abortion.” The film shows the rise of pro-life activism among members of Gen Z. One pro-lifer featured in the documentary was Eden McCourt of Abortion Resistance. She has received over 3.4 million views with her content online. Filmmaker Poppy Jay noted, “These activists are young, and they are in it for the long term. They know they are not going to change anyone's mind overnight, and their strong social media presence is just giving them more confidence. Yes, they might be a vocal minority, but they are effective at getting their message across.” In 1 Timothy 4:12, the Apostle Paul told Timothy, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Jeff Bezos applauds Trump's attack on regulations, stands by not endorsing Kamala Harris Amazon founder — and Washington Post owner — Jeff Bezos rarely speaks in public. And to get him to talk about politics in public is an even bigger feat. Political commentator Chris Cillizza said that Bezos did both on Wednesday — sitting down with the New York Times' Andrew Ross Sorkin. BEZOS: “If we're talking about Trump, I think it's very interesting. I'm actually very optimistic this time around. He seems to have a lot of energy around reducing regulation. And my point of view, if I can help him do that, I'm going to help him. Because we do have too much regulation.” Bezos suggested an economic growth strategy that would outpace the growth of the national debt. BEZOS: “This country is so set up to grow. If you look at the national debt, and how gigantic it is as a portion of [the Gross Domestic Product], these are real problems, and they're real long-term problems. The way you get out of them is by outgrowing them. “You're going to solve the problem of the national debt by making it a smaller percentage of GDP, not by shrinking the national debt, but by growing the GDP. You have to grow the denominator. That means you have to grow GDP at 3%, 4%, 5% a year and let the national debt grow slower than that. If you can do that, this is a very manageable problem.” In an attempt to appease Trump, Bezos applauded the President-elect's vision to cut regulations. BEZOS: “There are so many advantages here, but we are burdened by excessive permitting and regulation. President Trump is serious about this regulatory agenda, and I think he has a good chance of succeeding.” The New York Times interviewer, Andrew Sorkin, pointed to the blowback that Jeff Bezos received as owner of the Washington Post when he ordered the editorial staff not to endorse Kamala Harris for president and simply remain neutral on the editorial page instead. SORKIN: “Marty Baron, who was your former editor of that paper, he said, ‘This is cowardice with democracy as its casualty.'” BEZOS: “It was the right decision. I'm proud of the decision we made, and it was far from cowardly, because we knew there would be blowback, and we did the right thing anyway.” SORKIN:  “Okay, so let me ask you about that though. There was blowback. I think 250,000 people canceled their subscriptions.” Political commentator Chris Cillizza offered his analysis. CILLIZZA: “He does not want to make an enemy of the incoming president of the United States who has already targeted him repeatedly during his first term. So, I think this is of a piece with Bezos' decision to not run an editorial that, from the Washington Post editorial board, that endorsed Kamala Harris. He defended that decision. He said it wasn't cowardly; it was brave. Look, I think this is, at root, probably a business decision.” Congress definitively concludes COVID-19 came from Wuhan, China lab On December 2nd, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic concluded its two-year investigation into the COVID-19 pandemic.  They released a final report entitled “After Action Review of the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Lessons Learned and a Path Forward.”  Since February 2023, the Select Subcommittee has sent more than 100 investigative letters, conducted more than 30 transcribed interviews and depositions, held 25 hearings and meetings, and reviewed more than one million pages of documents.  In their 520-page final report, which we have linked in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com, the Select Subcommittee's investigation documents  the five strongest arguments which demonstrate that COVID-19 most likely emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. First, the virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature. Second, data shows that all COVID-19 cases stem from a single introduction into humans. This runs contrary to previous pandemics where there were multiple spillover events. Third, Wuhan is home to China's foremost Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome research lab, which has a history of conducting gain-of-function research at inadequate biosafety levels. Tuesday afternoon, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey will join city officials to announce that the city has completed all recommendations from the 2022 After-Action Review. Those were the recommendations put in place after a stinging analysis came out of law enforcement's response to the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd.Mayor Frey will be joined by the city's safety commissioner, police chief and fire chief. They will also announce the implementation of a new emergency communications tool for Minneapolis. The State Department has released an After Action Review on Afghanistannearly two years after the U.S.' catastrophic military withdrawal from that country, which concluded on Aug. 30, 2021.The report was released following a 90-day review and included more than “150 interviews with current and former State Department officials at all levels of the organization and reviewed relevant documents and other materials.”The State Department released the report, finalized in March 2022, on June 30. “It's just shameful, and starting with the timing of the release, they dropped it on the afternoon of the Friday before the 4th of July, which is just a naked attempt to bury it, to not have anybody pay attention to it,” says Victoria Coates, a senior research fellow in international affairs and national security at The Heritage Foundation. “But fortunately, there is such interest in this topic that they can't. They can't hide how bad this is and this is their own people doing the reporting.” (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.) Coates adds:The State Department was shifting blame to the Department of Defense, and basically nobody wanted to be left holding the bag. Who is the Little Guy?The Little Guy is a version of yourself that lives in your head.It's an inner voice that sows doubt, fear, and self-hatred. The little guy is a dark part of you that tears you down and pushes you to be petty and negative. It's an inner voice that we must all overcome if we seek to live happy, healthy lives.Why is overcoming the Little Guy important?Because the Little Guy robs leaders of valuable thinking time, resulting in less effective solutions, less inspirational interaction, and even less time leading.To lead well, leaders need the full capacity of their minds. They must have time to think, and those thoughts have to be very clear.Our brains are kind of like computers. We only have so much space available to process things. If we clog our brains up with the unproductive, maybe even counterproductive, thoughts of the Little Guy, we're reducing our capacity to TPL (Think, Plan, and Lead). To be the best leaders we can be, we must learn how to overcome the Little Guy, because it's destructive, distracting, and takes you off task.How do we contain the Little Guy?One - Acknowledge that the Little Guy occupies space in your head and commit to containing it.Two - Keep the Little Guy contained. At the time of big decisions and important interactions ask yourself, "am I containing the Little Guy?" Develop an internal leadership kata[1] tocontain the Little Guy. The business-as-a-flow orientation embraces continuous adaptive change within the firm. Traditional slow-motion control mechanisms like strategy and planning are no longer appropriate. The new toolkit that entrepreneurs are developing includes the after action review (AAR), a learning tool rather than a misguided attempt at predictive control. Key Takeaways and Actionable Insights In a VUCA world, entrepreneurial orientation embraces change and adaptation in order to reach goals. Learning fast is critical in times of accelerated change. A business firm must change at least as fast as its market and its external environment if it is to survive and thrive — ideally faster. In earlier podcasts, we've made reference to the OODA loop as a non-linear change management framework: Observe changing data, filter those Observations through your firm's capabilities, culture, heritage, and experience to understand what the new data means to your firm specifically, re-Orient if it's indicated, make new Decisions and take new Actions, and monitor the feedback loops for updated Observations. Speed of progression through the loop is a competitive advantage — make changes faster than your competitors. One of the keys to successfully managing change is a bias for action. It's possible that in some situations some businesses may fear taking action — they lack confidence in their own hypotheses and are concerned that their action might be “wrong”. Austrian entrepreneurship takes a different perspective. Entrepreneurial orientation and intent shape decision-making by giving it a high potential focus and, thereafter, every action is framed an experiment from which to learn. Learning enables a greater capacity for reframing. Curt Carlson, in E4B podcast #175 (Mises.org/E4B_175), told us that relentless reframing is key to success in innovation. Learning through action is paramount. The tool for learning from action is the AAR – After Action Review. The After Action Review is a simple device that asks the questions: what did we intend would happen, what did actually happen, what can we learn from what happened, what will we change next time we take action. Intent — What are the intended results and metrics?It's important to continually review the shared understanding of intent among those participating in any action or project or initiative. Shared intent is the mechanism that supplies direction and thrust so that everyone is moving in the same direction. It's sometimes called commander's intent (in the military) or leader's intent (in Agile team science). It's key that every team member subscribes to and can articulate the intent.Performance — What happened? Is there a performance gap compared to intent?“What happened” can be a challenging question because observation is often subjective, and individuals in different vantage point and with different perspectives can provide different reports or estimations of what happened. Cultural factors become important – front line actors and individuals located lower in a hierarchy must be able to speak freely about what they observed without fear of contradiction or condemnation by superior. A performance gap must be viewed as a learning opportunity that is good for the entire team and the firm as a whole.Learning — What was the cause or source of any performance gap?In a high-speed learning culture, teams are eager to identify causes or issues that give rise to performance gaps. In complexity thinking, it is not always possible to identify linear cause-and-effect linkages, but it's generally possible to identify areas for improvement as a result of experiencing a setback. It may simply be necessary to run more experiments until a better performance can be attained. It may be possible to identify obstacles that can be removed. It may be possible to identify risks that can be mitigated. In any of these cases, learning via experience (i.e., after action) advances knowledge and augments adaptiveness.One possible learning is that the intended result is not, in fact, within the capacity of the firm, leading to either a decision to augment capacity or a decision to redirect existing resources into other lines.Next Time — What should we change?Learning leads to new hypotheses which can be implemented through new action. The After Action Review identifies what changes in behavior are appropriate to try in a future action. There's the opportunity to eliminate waste, or abandon no-longer promising trials, or experiment with improved ideas. In a learning culture, there is eagerness to return to action armed with new knowledge and to explore new potential. AAR's can span all time periods: before action, during action, after action. When should a firm conduct AARs? All the time. In fact, there's a role for before action reviews, during action reviews and after action reviews. All have the same structure. What is / was / is going to be our intent?What challenges will we expect to face / are we facing / did we face?What have we learned in the past / what are we learning right now / what caused the latest gap?What will make us successful this time / what adjustments should we make right now / what will we change next time? A learning culture and orientation are critical to the successful application of AAR's. Learning via AARs is not mechanical, it's cultural. The culture of the firm must be that there's no development, no progress, no improvement without learning. Mark McGrath links the learning culture to the growth mindset. The relevant assessment is not one of strengths versus weaknesses but the mindset of the firm compared to that of its competitors. Seeking growth is a mindset, and so is learning. It's a humble mindset in which we recognize our bounded understanding and seek eagerly to augment it with new knowledge. There are simple shared rules for individual AARs and for the learning culture: shared goals and mental models, open to every level of the organization, psychological safety, transparency, shared findings, preparation for next time. Within these rules, every firm can build a capacity for learning that becomes a capacity for growth. When should a firm conduct AARs? All the time. In fact, there's a role for before action reviews, during action reviews and after action reviews. All have the same structure. What is / was / is going to be our intent?What challenges will we expect to face / are we facing / did we face?What have we learned in the past / what are we learning right now / what caused the latest gap?What will make us successful this time / what adjustments should we make right now / what will we change next time? A learning culture and orientation are critical to the successful application of AAR's. Learning via AARs is not mechanical, it's cultural. The culture of the firm must be that there's no development, no progress, no improvement without learning. Mark McGrath links the learning culture to the growth mindset. The relevant assessment is not one of strengths versus weaknesses but the mindset of the firm compared to that of its competitors. Seeking growth is a mindset, and so is learning. It's a humble mindset in which we recognize our bounded understanding and seek eagerly to augment it with new knowledge. There are simple shared rules for individual AARs and for the learning culture: shared goals and mental models, open to every level of the organization, psychological safety, transparency, shared findings, preparation for next time. Within these rules, every firm can build a capacity for learning that becomes a capacity for growth. The business-as-a-flow orientation embraces continuous adaptive change within the firm. Traditional slow-motion control mechanisms like strategy and planning are no longer appropriate. The new toolkit that entrepreneurs are developing includes the after action review (AAR), a learning tool rather than a misguided attempt at predictive control. Key Takeaways and Actionable Insights In a VUCA world, entrepreneurial orientation embraces change and adaptation in order to reach goals. Learning fast is critical in times of accelerated change. A business firm must change at least as fast as its market and its external environment if it is to survive and thrive — ideally faster. In earlier podcasts, we've made reference to the OODA loop as a non-linear change management framework: Observe changing data, filter those Observations through your firm's capabilities, culture, heritage, and experience to understand what the new data means to your firm specifically, re-Orient if it's indicated, make new Decisions and take new Actions, and monitor the feedback loops for updated Observations. Speed of progression through the loop is a competitive advantage — make changes faster than your competitors. One of the keys to successfully managing change is a bias for action. It's possible that in some situations some businesses may fear taking action — they lack confidence in their own hypotheses and are concerned that their action might be “wrong”. Austrian entrepreneurship takes a different perspective. Entrepreneurial orientation and intent shape decision-making by giving it a high potential focus and, thereafter, every action is framed an experiment from which to learn. Learning enables a greater capacity for reframing. Curt Carlson, in E4B podcast #175 (Mises.org/E4B_175), told us that relentless reframing is key to success in innovation. Learning through action is paramount. The tool for learning from action is the AAR – After Action Review. The After Action Review is a simple device that asks the questions: what did we intend would happen, what did actually happen, what can we learn from what happened, what will we change next time we take action. Intent — What are the intended results and metrics?It's important to continually review the shared understanding of intent among those participating in any action or project or initiative. Shared intent is the mechanism that supplies direction and thrust so that everyone is moving in the same direction. It's sometimes called commander's intent (in the military) or leader's intent (in Agile team science). It's key that every team member subscribes to and can articulate the intent.Performance — What happened? Is there a performance gap compared to intent?“What happened” can be a challenging question because observation is often subjective, and individuals in different vantage point and with different perspectives can provide different reports or estimations of what happened. Cultural factors become important – front line actors and individuals located lower in a hierarchy must be able to speak freely about what they observed without fear of contradiction or condemnation by superior. A performance gap must be viewed as a learning opportunity that is good for the entire team and the firm as a whole.Learning — What was the cause or source of any performance gap?In a high-speed learning culture, teams are eager to identify causes or issues that give rise to performance gaps. In complexity thinking, it is not always possible to identify linear cause-and-effect linkages, but it's generally possible to identify areas for improvement as a result of experiencing a setback. It may simply be necessary to run more experiments until a better performance can be attained. It may be possible to identify obstacles that can be removed. It may be possible to identify risks that can be mitigated. In any of these cases, learning via experience (i.e., after action) advances knowledge and augments adaptiveness.One possible learning is that the intended result is not, in fact, within the capacity of the firm, leading to either a decision to augment capacity or a decision to redirect existing resources into other lines.Next Time — What should we change?Learning leads to new hypotheses which can be implemented through new action. The After Action Review identifies what changes in behavior are appropriate to try in a future action. Notes: Purpose isn't about tapping into some mystical internal drive but rather about creating simple beacons that focus attention and engagement on the shared goal. Successful cultures do this by relentlessly seeking ways to tell and retell their story. To do this, they build what you call “high-purpose environments.” High-purpose environments are filled with small, vivid signals designed to create a link between the present moment and a future ideal. They provide 2 simple locators that every navigation process requires: Here is where we are and Here is where we want to go. "The world we live in is a learning contest." Deep fun = Solving hard problems with people you admire. Schedule regular team “tune-ups” to place an explicit spotlight on the team's inner workings and create conversations that surface and improve team dynamics Foster strong culture in remote working scenarios. It doesn't take much physical togetherness to build strong teams. Encourage remote teams meet up in person twice a year Create belonging: every group knows diversity, equity, and inclusion matter, but what separates strong cultures is they aim to create belonging across racial lines. Ex: normalize uncomfortable conversations; read, watch, reflect together; gather data and share it • Build Trust. Ask the magic-wand question to each member of your team: if you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about the way we work, what would it be? Connect. Hold an anxiety party to serve as a pressure-relief valve, as well as a platform for people to connect and solve problems together. Change perspective. Have a once-a-week catch-up session with someone outside of your group. Make it safe to talk about mistakes: Strong cultures seek to highlight and remember their mistakes and learn from them • Listen. Listening to others' problems is one of the most powerful culture-building skills on the planet. It's also difficult. Restrain yourself from jumping in, listen, then say: Tell me more. Embrace the After-Action Review (or as the military calls it, the AAR): Talking together about the strengths and weaknesses of your performance will make your group better. The Billion Dollar Day When Nothing Happened – “These Ads Suck." That was the note that Larry Page wrote and hung up about Google Ad Words. What did Jeff Dean, a quiet, skinny engineer from Minnesota, do to make the ads not suck? He had no immediate need to fix the problem. He worked in Search (a different area of the company. And how did Jeff Dean respond when he was asked about it years later (he said he didn't even really remember it. It was just normal to do stuff like that)... There is a misconception that great cultures are places that are always happy. Doing great work is hard. The way we build great cultures is by doing hard things together focused on connection and safety. Life/Career advice: Think of your life in experiments and the learning loop. It is Experience + Reflection. Experience + Reflection. WRITE DOWN WHAT you've learned from your experiences. Writing creates clarity of thought. Amy Edmondson researched Chelsea and Mountain Medical – What made them a success? The answer lay in patterns of real-time signals through which the team members were connected. There were 5 things: Framing - They conceptualized MICS as a learning experience that would benefit patients and the hospital. Unsuccessful teams viewed it as an add-on to existing practices. Roles - Role clarity. Being told explicitly by the team leader why their individual and collective skills were important for the team's success Rehearsal - Practice a lot Explicit encouragement to speak up Active reflection - Between surgeries, successful teams went over their performance
