fWotD Episode 2937: Cher Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 20 May 2025, is Cher.Cher ( SHAIR; born Cheryl Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American singer, actress and television star. Dubbed the "Goddess of Pop", she is known for her androgynous contralto voice, bold visual presentation and multifaceted career, while cultivating a screen persona that mirrors her public image by often portraying strong-willed and outspoken women. An influential figure in popular culture, her continual reinvention has fueled multiple comebacks over a career spanning more than six decades.Cher gained fame in 1965 as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, early exponents of 1960s counterculture, while also scoring solo top-ten singles such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". In the 1970s, she topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with narrative pop songs "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady". After focusing on acting, she reemerged in a hair metal style with the albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989) and Love Hurts (1991), producing international number-one singles "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". At 52, she reached a commercial peak with the dance-pop album Believe (1998), which introduced the "Cher effect"—a stylized use of Auto-Tune to distort vocals. The title track became 1999's number-one song in the US and the UK's best-selling single by a female artist. In the 21st century, she released her highest-charting US Billboard 200 albums, Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which debuted at number three.Cher became a TV star in the 1970s with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and her solo show Cher, both on CBS, attracting over 30 million weekly viewers. She gained critical acclaim after debuting on Broadway and starring in the film adaptation of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). Transitioning to film, she earned two Academy Award nominations—for Silkwood (1983) and Moonstruck (1987), winning the Oscar for Best Actress for the latter—and received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actress Award for Mask (1985). Other starring roles include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Mermaids (1990), If These Walls Could Talk (1996, her directorial debut), Tea with Mussolini (1999), Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). Her life and career inspired the 2018 jukebox musical The Cher Show.Cher is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated global sales of over 100 million records. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the only solo artist with number-one singles on the US Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades (1960s–2020s). Her accolades include an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes, the Billboard Icon Award and the Kennedy Center Honors. Her 2002–2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist at the time, earning $250 million—about $402 million in 2025. Beyond music and acting, Cher is known for her progressive politics and advocacy for causes including LGBTQ rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:18 UTC on Tuesday, 20 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Cher on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Screen Legend Ava Gardner's family, Ava Thompson and Ava Malissa Silver About Harvey's guest: If you're a fan of our show, you'll know that one of our most popular features is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, featuring interviews with family members of some of the greatest and most beloved legendary stars of all time. Today, we're focusing on the fabulous Ava Gardner, an iconic actress who captivated the world not only with her breathtaking beauty, but by her earthy, magnetic screen presence in dozens of unforgettable classic movies, including “Showboat”, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, “Mogambo”, which earned her an Academy Award Best Actress nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, “The Barefoot Contessa”, “On the Beach”, and “Night of the Iguana”, which earned her a Golden Globe Award Best Actress nomination, and a Best Actress Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. She also received 3 BAFTA Award nominations throughout her career. And television fans certainly remember her recurring role as “Ruth Galveston” on “Knots Landing”. Ava Gardner's hand and footprints are in the forecourt at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There's a bronze statue of her overlooking the coast of Spain. And the American Film Institute placed her at #25 on their list of the 100 Greatest Female Screen Legends of all Time. Our guests are Ava Thompson, Ms. Gardner's great niece and namesake, and her daughter Ava Malissa. They manage Ms. Gardner's intellectual property, and they are co-trustees of the Ava Gardner Trust, continuing Ms. Gardner's renowned legacy of generosity and compassion. On a personal level, their mission is to help the world see beyond Ava Gardner's legendary beauty, talent, iconic fashion style, and all the myths surrounding her famous marriages and personal life. Ms. Gardner was much more than that – she was bold, courageous, independent, generous and kind – and very much a trailblazer and a role model who was way ahead of her time. Our guests are coming to us today from the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, North Carolina. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tom Santopietro, Author, “The Way We Were: The Making of a Romantic Classic” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Tom Santopietro, is a popular and highly respected author whose books about the entertainment world are as insightful, entertaining and compelling as the iconic superstars and movies he writes about. He's written 7 bestselling books, “The Sound of Music Story”, “The Godfather Effect: Changing Hollywood, America and Me”, “The Importance of Being Barbra”, and “Barbara Cook: Then and Now”. The 1st time he came on our show, we discussed his book, “Considering Doris Day”, which is a must-read for every fan of this beloved and in some ways, hugely underrated, actress and singer. In his 2nd appearance, we discussed his monumentally important book, “Why To Kill a Mockingbird Still Matters”. If you haven't yet read that book, I highly recommend it, for its brilliant analysis of racism in America, in the context of one of the greatest novels – and movies – of all time. When our guest last appeared on our show, we discussed his wonderful book “Sinatra In Hollywood”, shining a well-deserved light on Frank Sinatra's screen legacy, which has often been overshadowed by his extraordinary achievements as a singer and recording artist. And now, our guest is back to discuss his latest book, “The Way We Were: The Making of a Romantic Classic”. The book commemorates the 50th anniversary of the iconic 1973 movie starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, as the quintessential mismatched lovers who were political and emotional opposites, but whom we were all desperately rooting for. The movie broke box office records worldwide and earned a slew of nominations and awards including 6 Academy Award nominations and 2 Golden Globe nominations. Barbra Streisand got Oscar and Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Actress, and she won 2 prestigious international Best Actress Awards. The movie ranks at number 6 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 love stories in the history of American cinema. And the music from the movie has been as highly acclaimed as the film itself, winning 2 Oscars for Marvin Hamlisch - one for Best Original Dramatic Score, and one, along with Marilyn and Alan Bergman, for Best Original Song – for which they also won a Golden Globe Award. The original soundtrack recording won a Grammy Award, and that amazing, timeless, classic song, “The Way We Were”, sung so beautifully by Barbra Streisand, not only won the 1974 Grammy Award for song of the year – the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998, and it ranks as number 8 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 songs in American movies. And if that weren't enough, the song is included on the list of “Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Our guest's wonderful, exquisitely written book provides the definitive inside story behind the making of a movie which is widely considered to be the most beloved romantic drama of the last 50 years. FlickDirect correspondent Allison Rose was on site for the Southeast US premiere of America. Take look as she interviews award winning writer/director Ofir Raul Graizer (The Cakemaker) about his latest entry at The Miami Jewish Film Festival. #JewishFestival #miami #TheCakemaker ABOUT AMERICA Visually iridescent and unexpectedly uplifting, America is the hotly anticipated award-winning film from director Ofir Raul Graizer, of The Cakemaker fame. Sincerely felt to the last with vibrant production design reminiscent of the best in Pedro Almodovar's established oeuvre, the film follows a Chicago-based swimming coach who is unexpectedly forced to return to his native Israel after his father's death. After contacting an old friend he hasn't seen in 10 years – as well as meeting his friend's fiancée – an incident soon occurs that creates a seismic shift in each of their lives. A summery melodrama, bright and verdant and attuned to the languor of the Middle East heat, America has a novelistic sprawl and an intimate bent as it carefully unfolds the three well-drawn characters in beautifully captured chapters. Winner of the Best Actress Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival, this sensual cinematic experience is a work of true magic, all built with love and redeemed by love. ABOUT THE MIAMI JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL The Miami Jewish Festival is an annual event that celebrates Jewish culture and heritage in the Miami area. It typically features a variety of activities and performances, such as live music, dance, food and crafts, and educational programming. The festival also serves as an opportunity for the local Jewish community to come together and connect with one another. The festival is open to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Suay Sew Shop in Los Angeles is a unique business employing skilled manual laborers. They provide free clothing to the needy that they have repurposed. In addition, they are working on becoming worker-owned, which empowers workers that otherwise would remain an overlooked population. There are ways to close the gap between the impoverished and business tycoons. It's a decision to share the wealth and take less in profits. It's one thing to stand on a soap box and “talk” about making a difference and quite another thing to put people over profits. She made her screen debut in the slasher film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005), went on to have a supporting role in the independent coming-of-age drama Tanner Hall (2009), and has since starred in the horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), the biographical drama The Social Network (2010), the thriller remake The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and the romantic drama Carol (2015). Patricia Rooney Mara is one of four children of Kathleen McNulty (née Rooney) and NFL football team New York Giants executive Timothy Christopher Mara. Her grandfathers were Wellington Mara, co-owner of the Giants, and Timothy Rooney, owner of Yonkers Raceway, and her grand-uncle is Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, the former Ambassador to Ireland. She is the great-granddaughter of Art Rooney, the founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers football franchise. Her father has Irish, German, and French-Canadian ancestry, and her mother is of Irish and Italian descent. After graduating from Bedford's Fox Lane High School, she went to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in South America for four months as part of the Traveling School, an open learning environment. She attended George Washington University for a year and then transferred to New York University, where she studied international social policy psychology and nonprofits. She took her degree from New York University in 2010. Her studies focused on non-profit organizations, as her family has a tradition of involvement in philanthropic causes. She had thought of acting after watching old movies and attending musical theater, but did not think of it as a serious vocation and was afraid she might fail at this. As a result of her reservations, she appeared in only one play while in high school. She began seriously focusing on acting when she was at New York University, appearing in student films. Inspired by her older sister, actress Kate Mara, she began to pursue the craft, auditioning for acting jobs at age 19. She appeared with her sister Kate in the video horror movie Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005), billing herself as "Patricia Mara". As "Tricia Mara", she had guest roles on television and won her first lead in the movie Tanner Hall (2009), which was shot in the fall of 2007. She originally auditioned for the supporting role of Lucasta in "Tanner Hall", a $3-million independent film, but director Tatiana von Fürstenberg was so impressed by the young actress, she had her return to audition for the lead role of Fernanda, which Mara won. Furstenberg was delighted with her nuanced performance, saying, "Still waters run deep". Continuing to call herself Tricia Mara, this was during the making of "Tanner Hall" that she considered changing her professional name to Rooney Mara, soliciting the advice of the cast and crew. After premiering at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, her performance in "Tanner Hall" brought the rechristened Rooney Mara a "Rising Star" award at the 2009 Hamptons Film Festival and a "Stargazer Award" at the 2010 Gen Art Film Festival. She received her first lead role in a major feature, in the $35 million remake A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). The movie proved disappointing at the box office, grossing only $63 million domestically and racking up a worldwide gross of just under $116 million. However, she was noticed by critics in the small but pivotal role of the Boston University undergrad Erica Albright who dumps Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network (2010). Director David Fincher subsequently cast her as the lead, Lisbeth Salander, in his thriller remake, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium book series. She received critical acclaim for her performance, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. She starred in the thriller film Side Effects (2013), the independent drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013), and the acclaimed sci-fi romantic drama Her (2013). The following year, she starred in the adventure drama Trash (2014). She garnered further critical acclaim for her performance in Todd Haynes' romantic drama Carol (2015), for which she won the Best Actress Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama and the SAG, BAFTA, and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In the spirit of her family's philanthropic endeavors, Rooney created Faces of Kibera, a charity that provides food, medical care and housing to orphans in Nairobi, Kenya's Kibra district, a small slum that houses a million people. There are many orphans as AIDS is rampant in the slum. Lindsay Rose Medoff, CEO and Lead Designer of Suay: SUAY SEW SHOP is creating a culture of community and reuse. Our podcast guest, Lee Grant, is a celebrated actress of stage, film and television, and a film director. During the McCarthy era she was blacklisted for 12 years from her professional career. Her daughter, Dinah Manoff, is well-known in our local theater community, having come to Bainbridge after a successful professional theater career on Broadway. Lee and Dinah will be featured in a Q&A about Lee's life and her new book, “I Said Yes to Everything”, at Eagle Harbor Books, on Thursday, August 13, at 7:30pm. Lee won an Oscar for her role as Best Supporting Actress in "Shampoo" (1975), and the Best Actress Award at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival for her role as the shoplifter in the 1951 film version of "Detective Story". She has been nominated for Emmy Awards seven times between 1966 through 1993, winning twice. She won the 1964 Obie Award for Distinguished Performance by an Actress for her performance in Jean Genet's "The Maids". Born to Russian and Polish immigrants, Lee grew up in New York where she found her passion for acting. After the McCarthy era blacklisting, she extended her career to film and stage directing and teaching, heading up the Actors Studio in New York from 2004-2007. Lee's new book, “I Said Yes to Everything” explains an actor's, and a woman's, need to overcome societal obstacles and to reinvent herself time and again to fulfill her own passion.
