Original Air Date: 8/13/2025 Every year, between one in every 1,000 to 2,000 babies is born deaf or hard of hearing. For about 90% of these children, they're born into hearing families, families who suddenly begin a journey they never expected. Maxine and Raymond Raffle were one such family. Their daughter, Lonene “Lonnie” was diagnosed as deaf at 18 months old. From that moment forward, they walked beside her as she carved out a life that defied limitation. Lonnie embraced everything, community, friendship, love, motherhood. Her world expanded, even as society tried to shrink it. Her husband was also deaf. Their children, however, were hearing; what's known as CODAs: Children of Deaf Adults. For Lonnie's daughter, Alison, that meant stepping into the role of translator, advocate, and bridge between two worlds, sometimes before she was old enough to truly understand what that meant. Then, when Alison was just five years old, Lonnie disappeared. Alison has made it her mission to share her mother's story. On this show, we always strive to include the voices of those closest to the story. But we also understand the emotional weight that comes with retelling deep personal trauma. When we spoke with Alison, she chose not to be interviewed for this episode, and we fully respect that. Instead, with her permission, we've drawn from the interviews she's previously given, as well as publicly available records and reporting. Alison graciously reviewed the research for accuracy, and gave us her blessing to move forward. What you'll hear today is shared with her care, her trust, and her enduring hope for justice. STORY 2: Vegan Bakery opens in East Cobb Tropicups, a vibrant new vegan bakery, officially opened its doors on Saturday, bringing cupcakes, cakes, and a whole lot of heart to 2525 Shallowford Road. The Ice House is part of the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas tradition, originally broadcast under the banner A Ghost Story for Christmas. First shown on BBC1 on Christmas Day 1978, it marked the final instalment of the original 1971 to 1978 run. This episode completes our podcast coverage of that era. - Written by John Bowen, who previously delivered The Treasure of Abbot Thomas, The Ice House was produced by Rosemary Hill and directed by Derek Lister. Its Christmas Day broadcast made it only the second entry in the strand to air on 25 December, following Lost Hearts, securing its place in the BBC Ghost Story for Christmas canon despite being quietly sidelined over the years. - Starring John Stride as Paul, Geoffrey Burridge as Clovis and Elizabeth Romilly as Jessica, The Ice House breaks from tradition by being a contemporary ghost story rather than a period adaptation. This change was driven by Rosemary Hill after she took over the strand. Series creator Lawrence Gordon Clark preferred the earlier M R James style and left after Stigma, making The Ice House the only film in the original run not directed by him. - John Stride had appeared uncredited in Sink the Bismarck! before gaining wider recognition in The Omen and A Bridge Too Far. He later starred in the BBC adaptation of The Old Devils. Producer Adrian Mourby later described Stride as a powerful actor whose volatility could be difficult to manage. - Geoffrey Burridge is remembered for Blake's 7, Emmerdale Farm and his appearance in An American Werewolf in London. He died in 1987 from an AIDS related illness. His partner Alec McCowen later insisted their relationship be acknowledged during the broadcast of This Is Your Life. McCowen also connects back to the podcast through Frenzy and his role as Q in Never Say Never Again. - Elizabeth Romilly appeared in several television plays and in Secrets of a Door to Door Salesman. By 2011 she had left acting and was working as a lawyer in the Government Legal Service. - Writer John Bowen went on to create Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and wrote for Dead of Night and The Guardians, a 1971 series imagining a fascist Britain. Every now and again, the horror genre produces a film that becomes a bona fide classic. In 1980, director William Lustig and co-writer and star Joe Spinell teamed up to make what may be the defining film of the 42nd Street grindhouse era: Maniac. The film has it all, a serial-killing protagonist who scalps women while sobbing about his mother, buckets of gore from an early-career Tom Savini, and all the usual suspects of late-'70s Times Square: hookers, drugs, and utter despair. A remake, directed by Franck Khalfoun, written by Alexandre Aja, and starring Elijah Wood, arrived in 2012. This time, the action shifts to Los Angeles and leans more heavily into the mannequins that served as surrogate girlfriends in the original. Does it rise to the occasion and meet its predecessor on its own terms? We dig into that question, and much more, on this Twice Told Tales edition of the show. Historian Dan Vogel breaks down the complex history of the Book of Abraham, beginning with the 1835 purchase of Egyptian mummies in Kirtland, Ohio. Rather than seeing the Kirtland Egyptian Papers as a failed attempt by scribes to understand Egyptian, Vogel argues they were Joseph Smith's own working papers. He demonstrates how Smith used these documents to “brainstorm” a new theological framework, allowing him to introduce doctrines like the priesthood ban and the plurality of gods under the guise of an ancient text. Joseph Smith purchased the collection for $2,400 and quickly identified the records as the writings of the biblical patriarchs Abraham and Joseph. Vogel notes that while Smith identified these as ancient records, they were actually Egyptian funerary texts, specifically the “Book of Breathings” (belonging to a priest named Horus) and the “Book of the Dead” (belonging to Ta-Sherit-Min). “Brainstorming” Book of Abraham Translation A central part of the discussion involves the Kirtland Egyptian Papers, which include “Alphabet” and a bound “Grammar” volume. Vogel disputes the apologetic theory that these documents were a failed attempt by scribes to reverse-engineer Smith’s translation. Instead, he argues they were Smith's own working papers used to “brainstorm” theological concepts. According to Vogel, Smith used these documents to develop complex ideas—such as a priesthood lineage and an Egyptian-themed cosmology—before dictating the final text. Evidence of Oral Dictation Vogel presents compelling evidence that the Book of Abraham was orally dictated. He points to manuscripts where scribes Frederick G. Williams and Warren Parrish wrote simultaneously, making the same in-line corrections as Smith changed his mind about specific wording. Furthermore, the scribes used phonetic spellings for names like “Alcanor” or “Elkenah,” which reflected Joseph Smith's distinct New England non-rhotic accent (e.g., dropping/adding the “r” sound). Filling the Gaps: Invented Characters One of the most significant findings involves the lacunae, or missing portions of the papyrus. Vogel asserts that where the scroll was damaged, Smith invented characters to fill the gaps. These invented characters were then transcribed into the translation manuscripts and given lengthy English definitions that ended up in the Book of Abraham. This suggests that the surviving fragments—which match these characters—were indeed the source material Smith was using. Theological Projection The Book of Abraham served as a tool to introduce new doctrines that Smith was building into the Church's structure. Vogel explains how the cosmology of the stars (like Kolob) mirrored the ecclesiastical structure of the Kirtland Temple. The three ruling planets and twelve others corresponded to the three presidencies and the twelve members of the High Council. In this way, Smith projected his 19th-century priesthood concerns back onto an ancient patriarchal narrative0. Critique of the “Long Scroll Theory” Finally, Vogel addresses the modern apologetic “Long Scroll Theory,” which posits that the Book of Abraham was on a portion of the papyrus that was destroyed in the 1871 Chicago Fire. Vogel argues this is a “fallacy of possible proof”. He maintains that the documentary evidence—specifically the way the characters in the margins of the translation manuscripts match the surviving fragments—proves that Smith was translating from the documents we still possess today. Ready or Not (2019) is one of our favorite Feel-Good Horror Movies Consider Feel Good Horror as a palate cleanser for those of you looking for a bit of optimism and good vibes in your horror movies. For those of you who may have followed up on our recommendations from Episode 205: Mean Horror, we’re making it up to you now. Triumph over evil! Protagonists for the win! Fist pumps all around. It’s time for some emotional healing through horror with Episode 206: Feel Good Horror. Just because the primary motivation of a horror film is often to scare you, that doesn’t mean you can’t be smiling the entire time. Horror films elevate your emotions, and often that means your happiness as well as your fear. Those movies that do both are usually big winners. When we consider feel-good horror, we ask ourselves the following questions: Is there a happy ending? Do you have a real rooting interest in the protagonists? Are there good nostalgia vibes? Was evil vanquished satisfyingly? Is there a fist-pumping “OH YEAH!” moment? Is the movie fun? Are we laughing throughout? Do the antagonists/monsters get what they deserve? Does the movie make you laugh (for the right reasons)? Did I immediately want more of the movie? Is this a movie that I would go back to as “comfort food” Final girls fit this model. Horror comedies often fit this category. Horror romances are often feel-good films. But, as always, the emotional takeaways from a movie are specifically subjective. Heather has different kinds of horror: films that are comforting and familiar, and films that are light, colorful, and breezy. This film is a pure delight!If Shaun of the Dead and The Greatest Showman were to get together and have a baby this film would 100% bet that kid. This is the only zombie, horror, musical that we have ever come across and highly entertaining from every aspect of what it promises! Zombies - Yes lots of them with hilarious and scary moments in equal measure Horror - Parts of this movie are tragic in tone, gore, terror and a never ending sense of despairMusical - Ok this is where this film excels, full musical numbers that are catchy, relevant and in places vital to plot exposition.
