I'm delighted to speak with Dave Bright and Dr Oliver Runswick in this episode. Dave is a coach and Senior Lecturer in Sport Coaching at Chichester University. His main research interests are in motor learning and its application to practical sport coaching. Dave has coached martial arts for 25+ years. And it was from his experiences in coaching that led him to do a Sport Science Coaching degree, then a Sport & Exercise Psychology Masters degree. Dave's current role requires him to develop undergraduate students as sport coaches, providing them with an awareness and understanding of the underpinning motor learning and coaching research. Dave is undertaking a PhD investigating the effects of cognitive load and autonomous task selection in motor learning. Ollie is a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London. His research focuses on understanding and enhancing learning and performance in domains including sport, dance, education, and the military. Ollie is the Editor in Chief of Perceptual and Motor Learning Skills at Sage Publishing and a Human Performance Technology Consultant providing consultancy in virtual reality applications, skill acquisition and motor learning, perceptual-cognitive skill, training/practice design, talent ID and development, vision in performance and performance systems. Ollie received a first-class BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Swansea University, MSc in Human Movement Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, PGCHE from St Mary's University, and PhD from Liverpool Hope University where he studied perceptual-motor skills based with St Mary's University's Expertise and Skill Acquisition Research Group. Dave, Ollie and I discuss a paper they co-wrote along with Dr Jenny Smith, Dr Philip Kearney which compares two learning conditions - task-related autonomy and cognitive effort. Research has shown that both feelings of autonomy (as supported by OPTIMAL theory) and cognitive effort (as supported by Challenge Point) can positively impact skill development. This research paper aimed to compare these two approaches to learning. Results showed no differences between the effects of autonomy and cognitive effort, but uncovered participants use of tactical learning to improve. We unpack the paper and discuss its real-world application for coaching settings.

Discover the intricate dance of energy expenditure as we unravel the myths with Dr. Eric Trexler, an authority in this field. Our conversation breaks down the complex interaction between physical activity and calorie burn, guiding you through the additive and constrained models of total daily energy expenditure. With Dr. Trexler's insights, we shed light on Herman Ponzer's eye-opening research with the Hadza tribe, which turns the tables on our understanding of energy usage in sedentary Western societies compared to their highly active counterparts.Timeline:00:20 – Dr. Trexler explains in simple terms the additive vs. constrained model of total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).4:38 - Hadza tribes (modern-day Tanzania); Dr Trexler joined Herman Ponzer's lab in 2023. 7:00 – Some do up to 35,000 steps per day. How much movement is that?10:00 - Once you reach a certain amount of total physical activity, there appear to be compensatory adjustments vis a vis TDEE. 12:24 - Maximal measured EE per day over months seems to be around a functional limit of 2.5 x a person's basal metabolic rate. It scales to body size in general. 15:00 – For pregnant women in the 2nd or 3rd trimester we may see a 2.2 range of metabolic scope17:00 – Metabolic scope values as high as 10 in the short run.28:00 – Metabolic adaptation31:14 – Additive vs. constrained models36:40 – Our energy intake is driven by the hedonic value of a given meal, not necessarily related to the energy needs of the person.39:59 – Quality of exercise is best served by choosing better foods; exercise is a behavior that affects so many other behaviors.47:37 – Are there tissue-specific changes in energy expenditure with age? Does this explain, in part, the drop in RMR after age 60?48:00 – Liver, Brain, Heart and Kidneys are much more metabolically active than skeletal muscle – do these organs decrease in EE? About our special guest: Eric Trexler PhD Dr. Eric Trexler is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology of Duke University, where he conducts research on cardiometabolic health and energy expenditure regulation. Book a call, or get in touch! My Intuitive Bayes Online Courses1:1 Mentorship with meIf you've ever tried to lose fat or gain muscle, you may have noticed… it's not easy. But it's precisely its complexity that makes the science of exercise and nutrition fascinating. This is the longest LBS episode so far, and you'll understand why pretty quickly: we covered a very wide range of topics, starting with the concept of metabolic adaptation and how our physiology and brain react to caloric deficits or caloric surpluses. We also talked about the connection between metabolic adaptation and exercise energy compensation, shedding light on the interactions between the two, and how they make weight management more complex.Statistics are of utmost importance in these endeavors, so of course we touched on how Bayesian stats can help mitigate the challenges of low sample sizes and over-focus on average treatment effect. My guest for this marathon episode, is no other than Eric Trexler. Currently at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology of Duke University, Eric conducts research on metabolism and cardiometabolic health. He has a PhD in Human Movement Science from UNC Chapel Hill, and has published dozens of peer-reviewed research papers related to exercise, nutrition, and metabolism. In addition, Eric is a former professional bodybuilder and has been coaching clients with goals related to health, fitness, and athletics since 2009.In other words, get comfy for a broad and nerdy conversation about the mysteries related to energy expenditure regulation, weight management, and evolutionary mechanisms underpinning current health challenges. Our theme music is « Good Bayesian », by Baba Brinkman (feat MC Lars and Mega Ran). Kenya can be said as the Mecca of the running world. Kenya has come to be the home of world-class athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge, Wilson Kipsang, Abel Kirui, David Rudisha, Florence Kiplagat, Edna Kiplagat, amongst others. Though most of us are recreational runners, we are pushing the limits in our own way, and the Kenyan runners set an aspirational north star for us. As a recreational runner, we have a lot of questions related to how Kenyan runners train. In this episode, we discuss topics related to: What is unique about the training that sets Kenyans apart? How many miles do they put in a day or week? How do they recover from their hard training? What is their nutrition like? How do they preventing injuries? GUEST INTROS: HUGO VAN DEN BROEK Hugo van den Broek is a former elite marathon runner, with a personal best of 2h12. He has coached amateur and elite runners from all over the world. His athletes ran at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics and had World Best performances in 2009 and 2015. When coaching his athletes, Hugo uses a combination of experience (he has been in the world of running for more than 30 years) and his scientific knowledge thanks to his M.Sc. degree in Human Movement Sciences. Hugo and his wife Hilda Kibet have been living and training in Iten, Kenya, since 2007. They both retired from professional running in 2015 and have 3 daughters. The couple has a guesthouse where they accommodate amateur and elite runners from all over the world, and organize running camps called ‘Kenya Camp' for amateur runners who want to experience training in Kenya under professional guidance. VIJAYARAGHAVAN VENUGOPAL Vijay was our first guest for our very first episode on marathon training and now again. It's been a pleasure to witness Vijay on and off the track focused on sports and nutrition. Vijay has recently visited Kenya and get to see how Kenyans train, and brings the perspective of a recreational runner. Vijayaraghavan Venugopal is an avid sports enthusiast, he is the father of an aspiring mid-distance national junior athlete, and himself an 8-time sub-3-hour marathoner. Starting conversations and building rapport with patients are valuable skills for acute care clinicians. Soft skills matter. Volunteer leadership helps you engage “in a whole new way” Being a member has more value than just getting a journal Guest Quotes: On the work towards Board Certified Acute Care Specialists: “We see an opportunity to recognize professionals who've been at the top of their license in an acute care setting” On helping patients lacking confidence: “They can find like new abilities that they didn't anticipate. That they didn't see coming. Which is always so sweet to see that look in their eyes when they set up like, oh my God, I didn't know this was gonna happen.” On our responsibility to our patients: “But they trust us. We have to see that as a gift, we have to see that as a responsibility and an opportunity all at once.” Rapid Responses If someone was going to play your role in a movie, who would play Jen Ryan? “I want Helen Hunt” You know you work in acute care when… “When most of your transfer training happened in the bathroom, but it happened and it's documentable and they got better at it.” Closing Thoughts “So a, push your patients as hard as their exercise prescription can to be tolerated, but b, realize that you're not the only person who's working with that patient and be part of the team That encourages the other professionals to be part of that solution.” 56:06 Links: https://journals.lww.com/jacpt/Abstract/2014/05010/How_Clinical_Reasoning_Can_and_Should_Impact.3.aspx https://engage.apta.org/home Connect with our hosts and the podcast! What if you discovered a 60 second assessment you could do each morning with no special equipment that would essentially let you see how your body is responding to various stressors and changes to daily habits like sleep, alcohol intake, exercise and more? Now there is – and the insights anyone can garner from this info can be a game-changer in our lives, regardless of our focused pursuit. Welcome to the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted source for engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights. Today's guest is Dr. Marco Altini, one of the world's foremost experts in something called HRV or Heart Rate Variability. Dr. Altini holds a PhD in Data Science & a pair of Masters degrees in Computer Science Engineering & Human Movement Science. He is also the creator of a powerful app called HRV4Training that has been fully validated for its accuracy. If you've been a listener here for long, you've heard several guests note the intrigue around HRV. Two guests specifically – with no sponsorship connection – identified Dr. Altini's tool as the tool of choice and he was very kind to accept our invitation to dig into the details as our guest. A brief note about today's format: The first portion of our discussion will focus in on HRV & the value it brings to overall health, wellness & performance. We'll then spend the back half of the discussion focusing on its use to enhance athletic performance along with a few specific questions about deeper layers of the app. So, whether you're curious about the application to everyday life or want to dig into fitness details, we'll cover it.For more information about the Catalyst Community, earning your NBHWC-approved health & wellness coach certification, the annual Rocky Mountain Coaching Retreat & Symposium and much more, please see https://www.catalystcoachinginstitute.com/ or reach out to us Results@CatalystCoachingInstitute.comLooking for weekly tips, tricks and turbo boosts to enhance your life?
