oel Hoekstra is a powerhouse guitarist known for his technical skill, versatility, and relentless work ethic. Born on December 13, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa, and raised in a musical household, he started out playing cello and piano. But everything changed when he saw Angus Young of AC/DC on TV—at that moment, he knew guitar was his calling. That inspiration launched a career that would span Broadway stages, stadium tours, and studio sessions with some of the biggest names in rock.Joel first gained wider recognition playing with Night Ranger in the late 2000s. Around the same time, he became a fixture in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, performing eight shows a week while juggling touring commitments with rock bands. His ability to seamlessly shift between hard rock stages and theater pits set him apart from most guitarists in the scene.He later joined the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, known for their elaborate holiday arena tours, and in 2014, he landed a major gig as guitarist for Whitesnake. Since then, he's toured the world with the band, appearing on albums like The Purple Album and Flesh & Blood, where he also contributed as a songwriter. He's also performed alongside Cher, playing guitar for her Las Vegas residency and her “Here We Go Again” tour, proving he can hold his own in any musical environment.In addition to his high-profile band work, Joel leads his own project, Joel Hoekstra's 13, a melodic hard rock supergroup featuring players like Russell Allen, Vinny Appice, Tony Franklin, and Jeff Scott Soto. “Careful back there…”   Generally speaking, an artist's DEBUT ALBUM will often be quite good, while their SOPHOMORE ALBUM, in contrast, will often be far more advanced, sophisticated, and light years better than the first, in terms of song writing and overall production. While this is more often than not the rule, there are some notable exceptions.   As with asking a parent with 2 kids “which one do you love more?”, sometimes the answer is obvious, and other times it's “not even close”. Mit "Back In Black" haben sich AC/DC 1980 nach dem Tod von Bon Scott zurückgemeldet und Brian Johnson als neuen Sänger der Band vorgestellt. Mit dem Album "Back In Black" und dem neuen Sänger Brian Johnson trauern AC/DC um ihren verstorbenen Frontmann Bon Scott, feiern mit den Songs des Albums aber auch das Leben und den Rock'n'Roll-Lifestyle. Und obwohl AC/DC vor diesem Album gerade erst ihren charismatischen Frontmann verloren hatten, mit dem die australischen Hardrocker damals den Durchbruch geschafft hatten, ist es "Back in Black", das zum (kommerziell) erfolgreichsten Album der Band wurde. Aber nicht nur das – "Back In Black" ist nach Michael Jacksons "Thriller" auch das zweitmeistverkaufte Album aller Zeiten. Über 50 Millionen Einheiten sollen von dem Album über den Ladentisch gegangen sein. Ganz besonders ist bei "Back In Black" natürlich auch die Gitarrenarbeit und der Gitarrensound der beiden Brüder Angus und Malcolm Young. Und was für viele Laien oft ganz einfach wirkt, ist es natürlich nicht. Es geht dabei um ganz viele Feinheiten. Von der Auswahl der unterschiedlichen Gitarren über Verstärker bis hin zur Wahl der Gitarrensaiten von Angus und Malcolm. Alles ist haargenau auf die jeweilige Rolle der beiden Brüder innerhalb der Band abgestimmt. Malcolm macht den Druck und die Power hinten und das bissige und verzerrte, darum kümmert sich Angus. Und diese unterschiedlichen Rollen sind auch im Mix auf dem Album genau aufgeteilt. Und auch beim Songwriting sind die Elemente und auch die Anschlagtechniken von Malcolm und Angus sehr fein aufeinander abgestimmt, erklärt Musikredakteur und Gitarrenexperte Stephan Fahrig im Podcast. Das kommerziell erfolgreichste Hardrockalbum aller Zeiten hat natürlich auch Spuren in der Musikgeschichte hinterlassen – und zwar sehr tiefe, wie Musikredakteurin Katharina Heinius im Podcast erzählt: "Sie (AC/DC) sind das Vorbild vieler, vieler Hardrockbands geworden – auch mit diesem Album. Sie haben auch einen Sound geprägt und sie haben den Sound auch durchgezogen. On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we share Jas Obrecht's world debut of one of Edward Van Halen's happiest, most memorable interviews. On that special morning — May 20, 1991 — Edward was on top of the world. He was celebrating the birth of his son, Wolfgang… his relationship with Valerie was strong… and he had just finished mixing For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Van Halen's first album in three years. The interview took place in the control room of Edward's expansive 5150 home studio. The console was a perfect snapshot of his world — cigarettes, tools, bottlecaps, a bowl of guitar slides, and Motley Crüe and Led Zeppelin CDs scattered around. “Before we do the interview,” Edward said, “I want you to hear the new album.” He cued up an advance CD of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, showed Jas the volume slider, and with a grin, said, “Hope ya like it,” before walking out the door. When the album finished, Edward returned, flipped a switch, and lit up two massive rooms behind the control room window — one filled with his guitars and amps, the other with Alex's drum setup. ROB & JEREMY interview CHRIS SLADE Chris Slade had an incredible career in music spanning 6 decades! Chris is from Wales and grew up 6 miles from where Tom Jones grew up.  So it only was right that Chris became Tom Jones drummer (Chris was on Tom's first 6 albums including LIve in Vegas) Chris went on to form Manfred Mann's Earth Band (Blinded by the Light) ... was asked to join a new supergroup THE FIRM (in the 80s with Jimmy Page & Paul Rodgers), was in ASIA, URIAH HEEP...  ... and one of the greatest bands of all time ... AC/DC.  Chris was on their RAZOR'S EDGE album which he played drums on the legendary song Thunderstruck!  He also recorded "big gun" for the Swartzenegger movie "Last Action Hero".  He joined AC/DC on their ROCK or BUST world tour in 2015. He was in AC/DC up until 2020 when Phil Rudd rejoined. We only had about 35 minutes to talk to Chris so we couldn't cover his whole career (who could) but we got to talk drum technique, auditioning for AC/DC, being asked to join The Firm and other stuff including who makes the best tea and if Chris could go back in time where would it be and when? Also hear Chris' response when Jimmy Page told him (while recording with Tom Jones) what he was going to call his next band ... you may have heard of them? A good fun interview!
