James Cussen is a philosopher, video creator and the first Limerick man we've had on the podcast. He runs a very successful and useful YouTube channel titled “The Living Philosophy” through which he unpacks long-standing philosophical arguments with modern-day application. A good friend put me on to his stuff and I've been dipping in ever since. In this conversation, we cover what philosophy has done for James, and how exactly it can help us in a very real way in our daily lives while acknowledging the dangers of overthinking and overanalysing. We also critique some heralded figures in the mainstream and what their success might reflect about our current society. Are we running away from feeling? This was a long, very fun conversation and I know you'll take something significant from this. If you'd like to learn more about James and his work, check out his website.https://www.thelivingphilosophy.com or his YouTube channel https://m.youtube.com/@TheLivingPhilosophyAs always, thanks for taking time to listen to us.
In this palette cleanser we are going to talk about the philosophy of romcoms for a change. I reckon this should remove any accusations of important work being done on The Living Philosophy. We'll be looking at two romcoms — the classic Norah Ephron When Harry Met Sally and the lesser known Just Like Heaven starring Reese Wetherspoon and Mark Ruffalo. One is reflective of a type of art that strives for psychological accuracy (Dostoevsky, When Harry Met Sally) category — while the second category (Just Like Heaven, Alexander Dumas's The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo) dispense with reality and works at the hyperreal level of the archetypal underworld. *** Damien's YouTube channel: "Science Fiction with Damien Walter": https://www.youtube.com/@DamienWalterPatreon interview with Damien Walter: ***

VYS0037 | Elvis with a Flaming Sword - Vayse to Face with AP Strange - Show Notes In this episode Vayse welcomes AP Strange, a writer, researcher and blogger with a near encyclopaedic knowledge of all things weird and a wicked sense of humour to go with it. Hine and Buckley shake down AP's voluminous brain on a wide range of bizarre topics and greedily feast on the nuggets of information that fall out, including the answers to such questions as: What were the entities that revealed the future to AP as a child and why did he liken them to Mikey Mouse's gloves? Did AP take a ghost for a spin in his Mustang and what was revealed when he got a tarot reading from this suspected phantom? Why is a sense of humour essential to an open mind and what happens if you don't embrace that? How can we learn to receive messages from the cosmos and allow a little more Strange into our lives? How and why do people so often ignore their own experiences of High Strangeness and should more of us be open to accepting the King of Rock 'n' Roll's Flaming Sword...? (Recorded 18 February 2024) Thanks to AP for generously giving us time from his busy Sunday morning and thanks as always to Keith for his valiant and tireless work on the ever increasing show notes, give the man a follow: @peakflow.bsky.social AP Strange online Website/blog (https://www.apstrange.com/) Twitter (https://twitter.com/AProdigiosus) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/apstrange23/) Holy Donut Revival Hour - YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@DonutRevival) Holy Donut Revival Hour on Twitter (https://twitter.com/donutrevival) Holy Donut Revival Hour - Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/DonutRevival) AP's blog posts referenced in the episode My Personal Experience with the Phenomenon, Which I've told on Podcasts Too Many Times (https://www.apstrange.com/p/my-personal-experience-with-phenomenon.html) Emanations From the Clown Realm - Legend Tripping, Hilarious Magic, and Synchronicity (https://www.apstrange.com/search?q=sandown+clown) The Journey of the Fool (https://www.apstrange.com/2023/11/the-journey-of-fool.html) From Brooklyn to Neptune: The Bugs Bunny / UFO Connection! On this episode return guest Matt Presti & the Alfacast crew further dissect the nature of our reality from the perspective of luminary Walter Russell, the most famous man you've never heard of. Matt's brilliant documentary, Dispelling Dimensional Madness, makes the strong case that reality is NOT a dimension. Rather, it HAS dimension. This treatise was created to take down the "belief" in higher dimensions. The fraud of the age fueled by gnosticism, mythematics, new-age scientism and unthinking adherents to this cult of fiction are summarily deposed in this most enlightening presentation. "You cannot THINK how to KNOW. You cannot ACT how to THINK. But you can KNOW how to THINK & ACT.” ~ Matt Presti Matt Presti is a renown Metascientist, Musician, Patriot, Philosopher, Poet, Practitioner of Universal Law, Natural Science and Living Philosophy, Audio and Video Producer, Broadcaster, and Host of The Exploration of Consciousness (TEC). On the fifth episode of the “What is a Good Life?” podcast, I am joined by James Cussen, the Creator at The Living Philosophy. I discovered James' work through his well-received YouTube channel of the same name, The Living Philosophy. I'd strongly recommend this to anyone with a curiosity for philosophy or a desire to broaden their thinking. Since devouring a copy of Albert Camus's The Outsider as a teenager, philosophy has taken James on a journey from despair to immense purpose. His content, guidance, and ideas, have a strong emphasis on the importance of embodying the wisdom of philosophy and learning the art of the good life, so naturally I felt he'd be an ideal guest for this podcast. In this podcast we discuss discovering purpose, focussing on the collective's well-being as well as our own, building your own personal philosophy, the role of curiosity in James' personal philosophy, and the considerable significance of family and close relationships in experiencing a good life.Running Order: 00:01 Introduction01:50 How James discovered philosophy04:55 Finding purpose06:52 Focus on the collective11:26 Balancing self-work and helping society14:13 Preconventional, conventional, postconventional morality18:10 Using my work to bring everyone to the table21:20 Processes for self-development23:20 Ayahuasca28:10 Acknowledging what could be beyond the material32:30 Racing to enlightenment!35:15 Anthony DeMello37:50 Simple doesn't mean easy42:40 Simplicity or complexity45:35 Deeper understanding48:35 Building your own philosophy53:30 A tool for cataloguing ideas / thoughts / dreams55:58 Gardening my thoughts58:53 Curiosity is a golden virtue1:01:30 The more I know, the less sure I am1:05:12 Well-being and truth1:09:00 What is a Good Life for James?1:11:44 The importance of relationshipsFor further content and information check out the following: - For the podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/- The Living Philosophy YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheLivingPhilosophy- The Living Philosophy Website: https://www.thelivingphilosophy.com/- The Living Philosophy newsletter: https://thelivingphilosophy.substack.com/Subscribe for weekly episodes, every Tuesday, and check out my YouTube channel for daily clips and weekly reflections.

Believe it or not, the saying “You are what you eat” reveals what we've got wrong about our approach to eating and living well. Why? It tends to take an overly narrow focus on ourselves without consideration of other values, histories, and species. Dr. Kelly Donati (William Angliss Institute, Australia) discusses the finer points of gastronomy, its history, its development, and how we can re-think what it means to eat and live well. The Living Philosophy is two years old! Two years ago the 100 videos in 100 days began. But before there was the Living Philosophy, there was The Living Myth — an Irish mythology podcast with my friend Barry that gave me my first taste of YouTube and podcasting. I thought it'd be nice to mark this second anniversary by looking back at the origins of this channel. It's also an auspicious time because I've been having some cogitations about how it's been going and how I want to take things further and I've decided to spend the month of November making an episode on Nietzsche. Beyond that I've also been thinking about this canonical video approach in general and the Obsidian work so yeah there's a lot moving and right on the point of the third year. So exciting times. Thanks to Matt for the suggestion about making a masterpiece. Grasping what it means to be disabled is more complex than you might think. But doing so is key to understanding how we might treat people with impairments as equals with respect to justice, rights, and ethics. Prof Chris Riddle (Utica University) specializes in political philosophy, applied ethics, and the philosophy of disability. One of the great insights from the philosophy of technology is that the more our devices become integrated with our lives, the more they reframe our relationships to others, the world, and even our purposes. In other words, technological devices tend to carry us away, for better or for worse. In today's (Un)usual Dialogues, I am talking with Lucas Santos (a.k.a. Lucas Janine) - a one-of-a-kind musical being, whose philosophy of life, rhythmic passion for art, and open heart, enchanted me and my friends, as we met in Porto earlier this year. Lucas will share the experiences of a Brazillian living in Portugal; an artistic soul making his ends meet in the pubs, restaurants, and streets of Porto; and a flourishing writer, whose everyday determination and purposeful action leave no space for failure in becoming a bestselling novelist, in the years to come. Our conversation meanders between the topics of the importance of support from one's family, how we can create more of what we desire while helping others, and expressions of those deep feelings, which only passionate acts of greatness can present to those around us. We aimed to talk for twenty minutes but caught ourselves in the beauty of shared thought and discussed the many subjects for almost an hour. It may seem like a commitment to listen to, but it is certainly one worth committing to... I hope you find this episode inspiring and empowering to follow your dreams, artistic, entrepreneurial, and whatever they may be! We tend to react to the issue of the right to abortion according to moral, religious, or political convictions. But what we often tend to overlook is that the debate surrounding Roe v. Wade is primarily a legal one. So according to the US constitution, is the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade legally sound? Traumatic experiences are those which involve significant and terrible events on emotional, mental, and bodily levels. Their effects can often go unnoticed or can be dismissed as being purely subjective or emotional. A more balanced and holistic approach to understanding trauma examines healing in relation to the mind and body. What if the key to respecting and appreciating non-human animals resided in understanding our human selves better? Thinking about animals and our relation to them might then involve trying to grasp the ways in which our current social, economic, and moral systems skew our perceptions and practices. Medicine involves more than science and evidence-based experiments. In today's health climate—where there seems to be a conflict of interest between health care, on the one hand, and pharmaceutical companies and the privatization of medicine, the other hand—it is easy to overlook a more holistic approach that understands how illness is causally linked to both the mind and body. David Corfield (University of Kent, UK) is Associate Professor of Philosophy, with special interests in the philosophies of mathematics, science, logic, medicine, history, and psychoanalysis. We see it every day—the problem of misunderstanding and misreading meaning and intentions. It can be the cause of frustration, hurt, and even violence. Hermeneutics is the branch of philosophy interested in how the interpretation of language, symbols, texts, and even the nature of existence requires a nuanced and open-minded approach. It can potentially help us to resolve a lot of the problems of miscommunication. In his 1981 book Simulation and Simulacra, Jean Baudrillard makes the claim that we are all living in a simulation. Baudrillard's conception of simulation is extremely complex, going beyond The Matrix's conception of the simulation (a movie that was inspired by Baudrillard's Simulation and Simulacra) as a virtual reality world in which we all live.Baudrillard says that with the emergence of the postmodern age, we have entered the simulation, a hyperreality in which all access to the real has debarred. The real is decaying away while we ourselves are locked into the hyperreal space without referents. In this episode we will be looking at Jean Baudrillard's conception of hyperreality and the hyperreal postmodern landscape we now inhabit. In Baudrillard postmodernism meets futurism and sci-fi to paint the terrifying picture of the dystopic landscape we find ourselves in. As we've gone deeper into the 21st century this work of Baudrillard has been shown to be more and more prescient, a topic we will dive deeper into in future episode of the Living Philosophy. ____________________⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: https://patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy________________⌛ Timestamps:0:00 Introduction1:35 Simulation and Simulacra5:53 The Difficulties of Defining Simulation8:26 What is Simulation10:32 The Hypermarket Simulation13:12 The Tasaday Simulation15:24 Summary and Conclusion

What is the difference between fake news and fiction? 21st-century humanity is threatened by numerous self-generated existential threats to its continued survival. These include socio-political disintegration, ecological collapse and the potential ramifications of AI. The nature of this challenge is comparable to the most prominent scientific hypothesis as to why moths fly into flames — an accidental hijacking of an evolutionary adaptation that leads to the death of individuals. What this hypothesis is and how it relates to the decline of humanity is what we are going to be exploring on this episode of The Living Philosophy. ________________⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: https://patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy________________Media Used:1. Negative emotions—such as fear, anger, and envy—are often seen as the kinds of things that impede our abilities to lead the kind of life we wish—the good life. Given the proliferation of violence and interminable arguments fueled by negative emotions, we might think that we need to eliminate them from our lives or suppress them. Prof. Krista Thomason (Swarthmore College) discusses how negative emotions work and why trying to eliminate or suppress them might be a bad thing. Albert Camus called the philosopher Simone Weil “the only great spirit of our times.” T.S. Eliot said she was the greatest saint of the 20th century. Charles de Gaulle said she was insane. But who is she and what is the Simone Weil philosophy?Despite dying at the age of 34, Simone Weil lived a life that rivalled any philosopher. And it was the authentic life of a philosopher following her inner compass. She did not fall in with the intellectual milieu of her time by becoming a public intellectual (which was far from a matter of intelligence — she finished 1st in her class for philosophy at France's elite university the École Normale Supérieure beating out Simone de Beauvoir in second place). She was born into a Jewish family and raised agnostic and yet found herself drawn towards religion; she fought in the Spanish Civil War and worked in factories for a year to understand the working class. _________________ ⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy ________________

DESIRE brings all things into being. Therefore, let your first desire be that you bring your ideal mate to you. Then do that which will attract him or her to you. The great secret of how to attract romance is to do only that which makes you loved. And what is doing only that which makes you loved? The answer is very simple—live love. Living love means putting others first. This will develop what some people describe as “empathy” which is an intuitive understanding of others' moods. However this characteristic is described, it is a combination of many things which comes from putting the feelings and desires of others first. Scientifically the reaction always equals the action; therefore, in first considering the other person, you are kindling his desire to regive to you that which YOU desire. Everyone is seeking that certain someone with whom he can feel happy and contented. Contentment seems to express a deeper feeling than happiness. When we feel that we can be ourselves with someone, we feel comfortable and contented with him. Tensions do not build up between two people who have found the key to contentment. Consideration for each other is the key to romance and it is the natural expression of love. There is an irresistible quality about a man or woman who puts love into every action. It is the little things about a person that attract you to him. And it is the little mannerisms that irritate and often break up a budding romance. Humans are so geared that they take the big things in their stride but the little things can wreck an otherwise wonderful relationship. No one can resist a truly loving person, and when one understands the art of living he has learned that loving everything he does not only brings joy to his own heart but he becomes as a magnet that draws others to him. If we approach a chore with a happy attitude, we do it well, quietly, quickly, and smoothly. We feel good inside. If, on the other hand, we approach it whiningly, we do it badly, and slowly, and feel irritated inside, because we are really cross with ourselves for so acting. When we learn that only we suffer for our bad tempers and basic laziness, we learn to put love into all of our actions whether the task is a small or large one. Our character traits are of the utmost importance for they shape not only what our face and body look like but they also shape our destiny. We are what we think, do, and say. Therefore, to attract romance we must look, act, and express romance. We must be romance. This being so, let us first consider our faces, which is what first attracts us to each other. Russell, Lao. I pick colors in the moment with a digital pallet of infinite color choices. My tools lend to an “in the moment” flow. With digital art I will have a color appear in my head first and then I add it to the design. I often combine unusual colors that create a distinct vibration and energy to the design. The same is true for my mixed media work. My studio has paint tubes scattered all over my work space. The piece I'm working on will in a way “call” to the color that needs to be added next.” https://dougbale.bigcartel.com/ https://society6.com/dougbale You can follow Doug's art on Instagram: @dougbale Paul Krauss MA LPC is the Clinical Director of Health for Life Grand Rapids, home of The Trauma-Informed Counseling Center of Grand Rapids. Last week I sat down with Luke Spikes at his latest Higgihaus project in Swansea to understand more about his property and business plans around the co-living market. He has a fascinating view on the philosophy around co-living, and an exception attention to detail. We discuss his philosophy during the interview, but obviously that design focus is difficult to convey via audio, so I recorded a short video tour whilst I was there which you can check on our youtube channel as well.
