Some of the same propaganda being employed against the United States is also being employed against Japan. However, with an entirely different culture, especially spirituality, how does it work? Is there really fear of a Muslim takeover; are Muslims burning down temples, and are they praying in the streets? Most of this comes from western paranoia in media, just as Q-Anon was transformed into J-Anon, though some of it is certainly very Christian-Jewish. Likewise, claims that Japan has banned Islam have failed and so now the Prime Minister is being called a Jew to undermine her administration in the eye of the same conspiracy-minded social media. Similar propaganda has been employed to make Japan seem less clean or safe, especially in light of what was likely an accident on a train in Tokyo this week involving a pepper-spray like smell, something that recently occurred with bear mace on another train. Some of this latter propaganda is likely more Chinese than it is Israeli, and the reasons are obvious. We're joined by former U.S. diplomat Josef Burton to examine modern Pahlavism: an online, diaspora-driven movement built around nostalgia for Iran's deposed Pahlavi dynasty and the imagined restoration of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. What was once a marginal exile politics of royalist uncles, former regime officials, and anti–Islamic Republic hawks has, in the past decade, been transformed into a bizarre right-populist scene. It's part monarchist revival, part regime-change lobby, part “Make Iran Great Again” fandom. Josef traces how this movement emerged from the trauma and politics of the Iranian diaspora, then accelerated through Persian-language satellite TV, social media influencers, think tanks, bot campaigns, and the broader ecosystem of neoconservative, Israeli, Gulf State, and MAGA-aligned regime-change politics. Pahlavism presents itself as the authentic voice of Iranians, but often functions more like an astroturfed culture-war identity: anti-regime, pro-Western intervention, aggressively nostalgic for a whitewashed “Iran before the revolution,” and hostile toward Iranian dissidents who favor diplomacy, pluralism, or any future not centered on the Pahlavi name. The movement has started to resemble a QAnon-style political subculture: very online, retribution-focused, conspiratorial, obsessed with hidden agents and imminent deliverance, and convinced that posting, doxxing, street theater, and displays of loyalty are forms of revolutionary action. But unlike QAnon, modern Pahlavism's fantasy of “the storm” has been tied to real intelligence networks, real lobbying money, and real military escalation. When the long-promised war finally arrived and failed to produce a restored monarchy, the movement was left to cope with betrayal, humiliation, factional infighting, and increasingly bizarre displays of royalist devotion. The White House Correspondents' Dinner last weekend became the site of the third failed attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump. “I remember the feeling was very similar to when it was clear that the House had been invaded on January 6, 2021,” Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who was in attendance, tells The Intercept Briefing. “Everybody was afraid that somebody had come in with an AR-15 or something like that.”This week on the podcast, host Akela Lacy speaks to Raskin about his experience at the dinner and later being asked by CNN's Dana Bash about whether he's thinking twice about his “heated rhetoric” toward Trump. “It was curious that, in the wake of this terrible episode, that she would try to equate the way that Democrats talk and the way that President Trump talks,” says Raskin. “He calls people crazy, insane. He calls people evil, wicked. He will buttonhole reporters and tell them that they're stupid, they're ugly. ... Hawk walks through Jonathan V. Last's newsletter from The Bulwark, titled "Political Violence Breaks Containment," which traces Trump's pattern from encouraging rally-goers to punch protesters in 2016, to excusing Charlottesville, to the January 6th Capitol insurrection, to pardoning convicted violent offenders and even placing one inside the DOJ. The same administration that published what JVL calls snuff films, threatened genocide against the Iranian people, and called political opponents vermin and enemies of the state is now incredulous that political violence has turned in its direction. The shooter, Cole Thomas Allen, a teacher and engineer who checked into the hotel a day before the event with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, found virtually no security in place. He sent a manifesto to family members roughly 10 minutes before the attack, outlining his targets, his rules of engagement, and his reasoning, rooted in rage at the current administration. Hawk also covers why trust in this White House's version of events has completely collapsed, on both sides of the political spectrum, because of years of disinformation, QAnon, Pizzagate, and compulsive lying. Even Trump's own base no longer believes the official narrative coming out of the administration. The Epstein files, the rhetoric, the pardons, the violence. It all connects. Keri Ladner, PhD, does. A scholar of fundamentalist politics, she has spent years tracing the theological roots of movements like the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and documenting how they moved from the margins of American religious life into the centers of government and policy. Her new book, American Dominion: The Rise and Radicalization of a New Christendom (Bloomsbury Academic, official release April 16, 2026), offers one of the most carefully researched accounts yet of how we arrived at this moment. Keri has been a guest on this podcast before. In our first conversation, we explored her 2024 book End-Time Politics: From the Moral Majority to QAnon, tracing the ideological line from Jerry Falwell through the movements that helped bring Donald Trump to power. She did not write “Christianity.” She wrote “Christendom,” and the distinction matters. “When we're talking about Christendom, we're really talking about power structures,” she told me. “The term has historically been used to describe the Church-State relations in Europe, particularly medieval Europe. What I'm trying to show is that we are looking at an age of very heightened Church-State relations, to the point that the church is pursuing a level of power that we have not seen really since the Middle Ages.” This is not a story about religion.
