This week Vic and Hamish go full Halloween mode, but instead of fake cobwebs and plastic skeletons, they're serving up the truly terrifying stuff: the cold, hard facts about booze. From death tolls that rival horror films, to drink-driving disasters, to long-term health risks that make your liver want to pack its bags and leave, they're laying it all bare. Why? Because sometimes the only way to spark change is to scare the pants off you. Expect stats, stories, dark humour, and a few dodgy Dracula impressions as they dive into the big picture (alcohol-related deaths), the immediate dangers (accidents, violence, dodgy exes), and the long-term risks (yep, the big C). Oh and Vic reveals that one of her favourite pastimes is scaring children...It's the spookiest episode of Sober Awkward yet, but don't worry, there's hope at the end. Sobriety doesn't just remove the horror, it gives you the happy ending you didn't know you needed. (not that sort of happy ending)Enjoy!

Recovery is hard. Sometimes it's easy to shift our thinking into behavioral management and even our recovery as a whole toward management versus healing. But in celebrate recovery, one of the things we lean into is not managing our recovery but walking in a posture of healing. In this episode, Rodney Holmstrom, Global Field Director of Celebrate Recovery, will unpack some of the differences between management versus healing in our recovery journey and some of the fruit we experience when we choose to surrender control in this healing journey.

My guest today is Dr. Hector — a psychiatrist who specializes in helping people heal from addiction, PTSD, anxiety, and depression through a trauma-informed approach. He blends neuroscience, medication, and therapy with nutrition and lifestyle tools to support whole-person healing.    What I love about his work is that it's not just clinical — it's deeply compassionate. He helps people understand how their brain and body work together so they can build resilience, recover from addiction, and truly heal from the inside out.   He shares why most people relapse not because of willpower, but because trauma remains unresolved. From the role of GABA in calming the nervous system to how EMDR helps reprocess trauma, this episode is packed with practical tools and compassionate wisdom for anyone on the healing path.   Before we jump in, I have a new segment, called “A question for you!” Today I want to know how you feel about the word “Alcoholic”.    I was interviewed on another podcast today and the host told me he thought it was a shame label. If you know me even a little bit, you'll know that the way I define it - it's a badge of honor, but also, it doesn't matter to me what you call yourself, as long as you get the support you need to heal and break free from addiction. Send us a textThe hardest conversations often happen in the quiet minutes between calls. We sat down with clinician and co-response partner Amanda Rizoli to explore how real support for first responders is built—on language, trust, and the discipline to show up when services are thin and the need is loud. Amanda works alongside the Milford Police Department's Family Services Unit and partners with Community Impact, Chris's Corner Recovery Resource Center, and New England Medical Group to create a wraparound model that meets people where they are.We talk through the realities of police and EMS life: constant hypervigilance, the pull toward numbing after shift, and the challenge of switching from fight-or-flight to family dinner. Amanda breaks down how she approaches alcohol as a coping strategy without judgment, how she teaches practical skills like structured decompression and tactical breathing, and why brief, timely check-ins during ride-alongs can open doors that a formal office visit can't. She also shares how a therapy canine lowers defenses on scene, and how clinicians earn credibility by respecting patrol's turf and knowing when to step back.Culture and language shape access. As a trilingual clinician, Amanda navigates the nuances of Portuguese and Spanish dialects across Portugal, Brazil, and Latin America, where stigma can be high and immigration status complicates care. We dig into the shift among younger parents willing to break cycles of silence, and how targeted outreach, transparent pathways, and confidentiality build trust. Families matter here: spouses can act as early warning systems, keeping communication open and knowing when work stress is spilling into home. Periodic joint sessions help couples tune the signal without turning the house into a clinic. If you care about officer wellness, community trust, and practical ways to prevent burnout, this conversation delivers a grounded playbook: co-response done right, multilingual services, stepped care from outpatient to IOP, and the small, repeatable habits that actually make a difference after shift. If you're listening to this, you probably know someone who has struggled with alcohol addiction, or maybe you're an alcoholic yourself. It's one of the most universal human experiences. In 2023, 10 percent of the U.S. population met the criteria for alcoholism. That's 30 million people. And throughout the past hundred or so years, there's basically been one solution: total sobriety, talk therapy, and Alcoholics Anonymous. And yes, there are countless people ready and eager to say, “AA saved my life.” We know and love many of those people. But as Katie Herzog writes: “The dominance of AA obscures the fact that other options exist too.” Okay, so what are these other options? One of them is a drug called naltrexone that can let alcoholics keep drinking—yes, you heard me right. Katie describes it as a chemical safety net that makes you want to drink less. And in order for the drug to work, you actually have to drink—at least at the beginning. The goal with this method is not necessarily abstinence. It's reformed, moderate, responsible drinking. Is this all starting to sound like snake oil—or worse, even dangerous? We understand. Over 175,000 Americans die each year from excessive drinking. It causes heart disease, cancer, domestic violence, and suicide. It costs the U.S. economy nearly $250 billion in healthcare expenses. There's loss of productivity, criminal justice fees, vehicle wrecks—I could go on. And living with alcoholism, or being close to someone who struggles with addiction, can be devastating. So when someone comes along and says, “Your alcoholic loved one can actually drink with naltrexone,” the knee-jerk reaction is to say: “Hell no.” But Katie Herzog, in her new book Drink Your Way Sober, argues that AA—and our traditional thinking—has not worked, and will not work, for everyone. And she makes the case that we should be more open to alternative forms of treatment like naltrexone. You'll know Katie from her hit podcast Blocked and Reported, which she co-hosts with Free Press contributor Jesse Singal—though she likes to say she is “the only host of the only podcast.” And today, Bari asks her how she got sober using naltrexone—and a program called the Sinclair Method—how the drug actually works, why it's been shunned by the medical community, and whether she thinks society will buy into it. This episode traces his complete journey—from a troubled childhood and early substance use, to meth addiction, prison, family separation, and the miraculous road back to sobriety, faith, and fatherhood.   Through tears, laughter, and hard truths, Jason opens up about what it means to be a man redeemed. He shares how Hope City Church, mentorship, and a community of believers gave him the spiritual and emotional tools he never had growing up. His story reveals the brutal reality of addiction—but more importantly, the beauty of God's redemption story when we finally stop running.   This is more than a story about getting sober. It's a story about becoming whole, about how God can take the pieces of a shattered life and build something new—something strong enough to lead a family, raise kids with love, and inspire others to believe that no matter how dark the pit, there is always a way out.   If you're a parent fighting your own battles, a man seeking purpose, or someone walking through the ashes of addiction or shame—this episode will meet you right where you are.   ⸻

Apparently, choosing not to drink now makes you controversial. In this episode, Shane dives into the cultural weirdness around sobriety — why quitting alcohol freaks people out more than drinking too much, how clear-headed men are suddenly being called “radical,” and what this says about masculinity, culture, and freedom in 2025. From The Guardian's recent article “Mocktails for MAGA: Why the US Right Is Turning Sober” to the growing trend of men reclaiming their focus, faith, and families, Shane breaks down why a simple glass of sparkling water can now spark a political debate. You'll laugh, shake your head, and probably think twice about why society celebrates dysfunction and ridicules discipline. Because here's the truth, sobriety isn't extreme. It's clarity. It's leadership. It's power. And in a world that glorifies chaos, staying sober might just be the most rebellious move you can make. Key Takeaways Don't let culture define your character — “normal” isn't always right. True masculinity isn't about how much you can drink, but how much you can carry. Staying sober isn't weakness — it's the foundation of real freedom and clarity. Join the Movement If you're ready to level up your mind, health, and leadership:

Send us a textWhat if the thing you're most afraid to say is the exact key that unlocks your freedom? That's where we start: with a prayer, an intention to be real, and the kind of honesty that makes sobriety livable at home, not just in a meeting. We trace the Big Book's roots back to the Sermon on the Mount, 1 Corinthians 13, and the Book of James to show why action-based faith beats white-knuckling every time. Step One gets clarified—powerless and unmanageable are two different admissions—and Steps Four and Five come alive as the place where secrets lose their grip. You'll hear why “you're only as sick as your secrets” isn't a slogan but a strategy, how to choose a sponsor who takes you through the work (and when to switch), and why humility shows up best as gratitude in motion. This conversation is family-deep. The wives speak openly about what changed: patience, fewer assumptions, and honest check-ins about triggers, fatigue, and trust. We lay out practical guardrails for real-life tests—travel, all-inclusive settings, old routines—and name the “Big Three” that keep sobriety stable: prayer, fellowship, and working with others. We also tackle amends with nuance—owning your part while holding firm boundaries around harm—plus a crucial warning about over-serving until home suffers. Tradition One gets personal: protect unity by protecting your capacity. What stands out most is the texture of hope: a teenage son modeling integrity, laughter breaking tension, and the reminder that vulnerability isn't weakness—it's the doorway to relief, connection, and a marriage that actually grows. If you're early in recovery, a spouse trying to support well, or someone stuck between dry sober and truly free, there's something here you can use today. If this conversation helped, share it with one person who needs it, hit follow so you never miss an episode, and leave a quick review—what truth are you ready to say out loud?Thank You for Joining Us.. Drew Sullivan: From What to Why

    7:47 Conversations

Episode SummaryIn this special episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, host Chris Schembra welcomes Drew Sullivan, a purpose-driven dealmaker, speaker advocate, and Senior Vice President at APB Speakers, for a raw and hope-filled conversation about the courage it takes to stop hiding and start living authentically.Drew's story is both ordinary and extraordinary. Growing up as a middle child with ADHD in a sports-obsessed town, he was labeled as “wrong” more often than he was encouraged to be curious. Teachers told him to be quiet, behavioral charts measured his worth, and well-intentioned parents and doctors tried their best but often focused on what he did rather than why he felt what he felt. Those early messages led to decades of self-doubt, addiction, and feeling “othered.”But Drew's life didn't end there. Sobriety became his turning point, not just quitting substances but rebuilding identity from the inside out. He realized the same curiosity and big-heartedness he was punished for as a child had become his superpowers as an adult: the ability to connect deeply, ask better questions, and champion others' voices.Chris and Drew unpack big ideas that apply to everyone, whether you're a parent trying to raise emotionally healthy kids, a leader navigating change with your team, or someone working on your own healing. Together, they talk about how to move beyond trauma without ignoring it, how to strengthen relationships through curiosity and vulnerability, and how connection isn't just nice to have, it's essential for growth. They dive into practical tools and powerful frameworks:The Military-Style Debrief — After any event or risk, ask three questions: What went well? What could have gone better? What will we do differently next time? From What to Why — Lasting growth comes not from obsessing over what happened but from exploring why it happened and using that insight to break harmful cycles. Ubuntu Philosophy — “I am because we are.” Success is never a solo act. Long-term fulfillment comes from shared humanity and supporting each other's growth. Inside-Out Living — Stop chasing outside validation (titles, applause, perfection) and build a life anchored in authenticity and personal truth. This episode also wrestles with one of today's cultural tensions: the “cult of trauma.” We live in a time where looking backward has become a primary mode of healing, therapy, revisiting wounds, and retelling past pain. That work is necessary but incomplete. Chris and Drew challenge listeners to balance reflection with forward momentum, to ask not just what went wrong, but how do we build what's next?Their conversation is deeply practical yet profoundly human. Drew shares intimate stories — from being excluded at eighth-grade basketball tryouts to the loneliness of early sobriety — and turns them into wisdom for anyone trying to live and lead differently. Chris opens up about his own childhood with ADHD and how empathy and gratitude saved his life and career. Together, they model what it looks like to have brave, healing, and hope-filled dialogue. At its heart, this episode is a call to action: to show up for yourself and others with dignity, curiosity, and presence; to give gratitude in a way that lands; to stop letting shame and isolation write your story; and to embrace connection as the bridge between pain and growth.Whether you're a parent, an educator, a leader building culture, or someone just trying to live a more wholehearted life, you'll leave with practical tools and renewed belief that storms don't last forever, and that you're not alone in the work of becoming.10 Great Quotes“Not all gratitude given is gratitude received. We have to give in the language others like to receive.” — Drew Sullivan “Solutions are not found in the what; they're found in the why.” — Drew Sullivan “Every storm has to end at some point — the clouds have to clear.” — Drew Sullivan “Don't play hide and seek with yourself. Stop letting your thoughts hide.” — Drew Sullivan “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” — Chris Schembra quoting Ubuntu “Without connection, there is no growth. It's the water and fertilizer for real progress.” — Drew Sullivan “We spend so much emotional energy reliving what went wrong that we forget to dream about what can go right.” — Chris Schembra “Vulnerability 101: be honest about the truth of your life, not just where you are now but where you came from.” — Drew Sullivan “The greatest present you can give is your presence.” — Chris Schembra “When you know better, you do better — but only if you act on what you've learned.” — Drew Sullivan 10 Key TakeawaysEmpathy must lead to action — Listening and understanding are powerful, but transformation only happens when you do something with what you've learned. Reframe challenges into opportunities — Shift from “what went wrong” to “what can we do differently next time.” Ask “why,” not just “what” — Understanding the why behind behaviors, decisions, and pain creates the foundation for healing and growth. Connection is non-negotiable — Personal and professional growth withers without deep human relationships. Redefine vulnerability — Sharing your real story — even messy parts — builds trust and invites connection. Inside-out living beats outside-in validation — Chase alignment with values and purpose, not just achievements or appearances. Parents and leaders shape futures — Taking one extra step to understand and affirm can change someone's entire trajectory. Reinvention is always possible — Like the Real Housewives metaphor, we all deserve new eras and second chances. Don't let your past pilot your future — Carry your “stone,” but build the strength to make it a co-pilot, not the driver. Gratitude is a bridge — When expressed thoughtfully in someone's love language, it deepens relationships and accelerates healing.

They also offer comprehensive support for individuals with mental health conditions such as depression, trauma, and anxiety. In this conversation, Dr. Jason Powers and Dr. Andrew Krieger discuss the different phases of recovery, the science behind post-acute withdrawal syndrome, and the meaning of emotional sobriety. Together, they explore how long-term recovery is less about counting the years and more about integrity, emotional growth, and learning to live a life that's genuinely fulfilling. Topics Discussed: Defining Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) The difference between co-occurring disorders & substance use disorder Breaking down emotional sobriety into 3 main categories Understanding the phases of recovery and personal growth How perspective and integrity define Long-Term Sobriety, not just time Finding fulfillment beyond survival in recovery — CHAPTERS:  00:00 Introduction to Positive Recovery MD 01:09 Meet Our Guest: Andrew Krieger 01:40 Andrew's Journey to Sobriety 03:45 Career Transition and Professional Growth 06:36 Phases of Recovery 09:57 Understanding Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome & Co-Occurring Disorders 15:48 Emotional Sobriety Explained 20:00 Why Length of Abstinence Doesn't Equate to Emotional Maturity 21:40 Personal Stories in Early Recovery 23:55 The Importance of Supportive Relationships and Accountability 27:55 Finding a Balance in Sobriety and New Experiences in Recovery  31:58 Reflections on Personal Journey and Finding Peace  — Connect with Dr. Andrew Krieger:  Website: www.cmamed.com  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-krieger-6864745  — Connect with PRC on Social: IG: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters  FB: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters  TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@positiverecoverycenter  LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters  YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Want even more expert insights and support on the recovery journey? Robbing From Loved Ones with Scott Schafer | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this episode of The Hopeaholics Podcast, guest Scott Schafer delivers an unflinchingly honest and deeply moving account of his journey from professional athlete to addict, and ultimately to a man living a life of gratitude and purpose. Drafted by the New York Mets out of high school, Scott's dreams were derailed after multiple injuries and surgeries led to an addiction to painkillers that spiraled into years of dependence on Adderall, meth, and heroin. He recounts his devastating fall from a promising baseball career to life on the streets, describing the loneliness, desperation, and loss that consumed him. Through moments of rock bottom, jail time, and treatment, Scott found the strength to surrender, rebuild, and embrace recovery. He reflects on the mentors and programs that guided him, the faith that grounded him, and how service to others became his new purpose. Today, Scott shares his life in Texas, where he works at Good Vibes Coastal Kitchen and continues to inspire those in recovery with his contagious positivity. He also opens up about his relationship with his wife, whose own journey through addiction and healing has strengthened their love and mutual commitment to growth. With honesty, humor, and heart, Scott's story is a testament to resilience, redemption, and the unshakable power of hope.#thehopeaholics  #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. Can a joke survive translation? Danish comedian Jacob Taarnhøj has been finding out for over a decade—performing stand-up in Danish, English, and even Norwegian. From the comedy clubs of Aarhus to TV specials and international stages, Jacob shows how humor shifts across languages yet still connects people through shared absurdities. In this conversation with Derek and Conrad, he reveals what it's like to make Danes laugh at their own quirks, navigate wordplay that doesn't always translate (gherkin, anyone?), and stay sober in a culture built on drinking together. They unpack why Danish humor is darker, humbler, and more self-deprecating than many outsiders expect—and why that mix helps international audiences feel at home. If you've ever wondered what really makes people laugh in Denmark—or how language shapes what we find funny—this episode pulls back the curtain on the art of comedy without borders.Jacob Taarnhøj (Guest): https://www.instagram.com/jacobtaarnhoej/ https://www.facebook.com/JacobTaarnhoej https://jacobtaarnhoej.dk/ Derek Hartman: https://www.instagram.com/derekhartmandk https://youtube.com/c/robetrottinghttps://tiktok.com/@derekhartmandkwww.facebook.com/robetrottingConrad Molden:https://instagram.com/conradmoldencomedyhttps://youtube.com/c/conradmoldenhttps://tiktok.com/@conradmolden https://facebook.com/conradmoldenhttps://www.conradmolden.dk

Is sobriety really just herbal tea, beige cardigans, scrabble and bouffant hair? This week on Sober Awkward, Vic and Hamish tackle one of the trickiest parts of sober life… keeping your enthusiasm when everyone else is getting pissed. From rewiring your dopamine-starved brain to rediscovering what actually excites you (spoiler: it's not Sambuca shots or Gary from accounts), they explore how to find genuine joy, fun, and buzz, minus the hangover and the shame-spiral.Expect laughter, science, awkward confessions, and a few deeply questionable dance-floor memories as they flip the “sober = boring” myth on its head. Whether you're still wobbling on the fence with one leg in the pub and one in a yoga class, or you're fully converted to the chamomile-tea-and-early-bedtime lifestyle, this episode will spark your sober mojo back to life.Sobriety isn't beige!!! it's sequins, silliness, and sweet, hangover-free freedom.Oh, and bring tissues. Vic gets emotional, Hamish overshares, and there's some very naughty chat that probably should've been edited out. Do not play this one with the kids in the car.

In celebrate recovery the small group guidelines provide safety for all those in attendance. Is it just for small group or should these follow us outside the group as well? As CR participants, do we fully understand the value of avoiding crosstalk, or does it feel like a silly rule that would be fun to break? In this podcast, Rodney Holmstrom, Global Field Director of Celebrate Recovery will unpack this important guideline and expand on some additional thoughts.
