“I don't like the idea of losing out to a machine because I feel like I'm losing a part of myself in the process.” — Nelson Dellis, six-time USA Memory ChampionMost of us can't remember our spouse's phone number. We barely know our own. We haven't read a physical map in years. Some of us don't even know what a map is. Such is the impoverishment of mental life in our digital age.Nelson Dellis, unlike most of us, is a rich man — at least mentally. He can memorise a shuffled deck of 52 cards in under a minute. He stores every stranger's phone number in his head for 24 hours before putting it in his phone — on principle. He's a six-time USA Memory Champion, a computer science professor at Skidmore, and the author of a new book, Everyday Genius, which suggests we can all be a lot smarter than our smart phones.Dellis got into memory after watching his grandmother get lost in the fog of Alzheimer's. And as a computer science professor, he's equally terrified by what he now sees in the classroom. His students can't craft an email without ChatGPT. They can't focus. They can't solve a problem without asking a machine. He warns that we're outsourcing our cognitive agency to devices and mislabelling it as human productivity. For Dellis, it's the same mental atrophy that destroyed his grandmother. AI-generated mnemonics, he warns, feel “dead inside.” Our brains, like our language, are degenerating into slop. Thus the value of his hacks to restore our focus and boost our memories. Five Takeaways• I Can't Remember My Wife's Phone Number: Neither can you. Neither can anyone under 50. We've outsourced our memories to devices and the consequences are only beginning to show. Nelson Dellis memorises every new phone number for 24 hours before putting it in his phone. Not because he needs to — because his brain needs him to.• His Grandmother Disappeared into Alzheimer's and It Changed His Life: Dellis watched the woman who raised him become a shell of herself — unable to recognise her own grandson. He went down a rabbit hole into memory science, discovered a former champion's audiobook, tried the techniques, and was hooked. He won his first US Memory Championship within two years. He's won six.• If Everyone's a Genius, Nobody Is: I pushed back on the book's premise. Dellis conceded the point but held his ground: the techniques are learnable, the results are real, and the distinction between “genius” and “trained” matters less than the distinction between a brain that's exercised and one that's atrophying. The London cab driver study is his best evidence — hippocampi that grow with use and shrink without it.• AI Slop Is by Definition Forgettable: Dellis teaches computer science, so he's no Luddite. But AI-generated mnemonics, he says, feel “dead inside.” The vivid, absurd, grotesque images that make memory techniques work are products of individual human imagination. A machine can't generate weirdness. Not yet. Maybe not ever. His students can't write an email without ChatGPT. That should terrify us more than it does.• Eat Your Blueberries: Four pillars of brain health: mental exercise, physical fitness, diet, and — the one that surprises people — social interaction. Dellis trains a 90-year-old and a five-year-old using the same techniques. Both can do things their peers cannot. The brain doesn't expire at 70. But it does atrophy if you let your iPhone do the thinking. About the GuestNelson Dellis is a six-time USA Memory Champion (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2021, 2024), certified mountaineer and Everest summiteer, and Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Skidmore College. His new book is Everyday Genius: Hacks to Boost Your Memory, Focus, Problem-Solving, and Much More. He has taught memory techniques to audiences ranging from five-year-olds to nonagenarians.References:• Everyday Genius by Nelson Dellis — the book under discussion, currently the number one new release in memory improvement on Amazon.• Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer — the bestselling account of competitive memory that Dellis discusses and Foer, a friend of his, promoted at the same event where Dellis won his first title.• Episode 2835: Why Dario Amodei Might Be the 21st Century's First Real Leader — this week's TWTW, where Keith Teare covered AI disruption from the tech side.• USA Memory Championship — the annual competition Dellis has won six times.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. This week's 10 Minute Confidence Boost guests are Olivia and Tanyka Davson - sisters, founders of Cubbi, and the women who walked into the Dragon's Den (while one was nine months pregnant) and came out with a £50,000 investment. They built their business - a discount platform for new parents - while Olivia was on maternity leave, and since appearing on Dragon's Den the response from parents has been overwhelming. They talk to me about what confidence really means when the stakes are high, how leaning on each other got them through the Den, and why becoming a mum was the thing that finally made Olivia start backing herself. Tanyka also shares the simple "why not me?" mindset shift she uses when self-doubt creeps in, and why Olivia's trick involves silly videos of her sons.Follow Cubbi on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cubbi.ukAnd check out their website: https://www.cubbi.uk If you enjoyed this episode then please leave a rating or review - and you can follow the podcast to ensure you don't miss future episodes.
n this episode of Dental Drill Bits, Sandy and Dana begin a three-part series exploring one of the most common questions dentists ask: how does a solo practice consistently reach an additional $150,000 per month in production? Many dentists assume the answer is more marketing, new technology, or outside solutions. But Sandy explains that production growth is usually driven by systems already inside the practice. When teams improve communication, scheduling, patient education, and training, they often uncover significant missed opportunities. In Part 1 of this series, Sandy and Dana break down four key production drivers that can immediately impact practice growth: same-day dentistry, phone call conversion, visual communication with patients, and consistent team training. Topics We Discuss Same-day dentistry and capturing treatment opportunities while the patient is in the office How unscheduled treatment represents one of the biggest missed opportunities in dental practices Why phone call conversion is critical to turning marketing into scheduled appointments How automated phone systems can create barriers for potential new patients Why visual tools help patients understand and accept treatment How intraoral photos, mirrors, and images improve case acceptance Why ongoing team training strengthens communication, systems, and production growth Special thanks to our sponsors:

This episode features Golden Ratio frequencies for late winter renewal. Winter hasn't fully let go, the light is finally returning, and our energy is caught in between. We lean into that hinge of the year with a blend of science, sound, and breath designed to turn perseverance from a grind into a rhythm. Guided by Pi's unending circle and the golden ratio's expanding spiral, we map mathematics onto physiology so your nervous system can find coherence when motivation runs low.We start by reframing grit through the lens of proportion. Pi never resolves yet keeps the world turning; Phi never repeats yet shapes shells, sunflowers, and galaxies. That same elegance shows up in music: Fibonacci footprints structure scales, and many great works crest at golden points. We translate these patterns into coherent harmonic relationships that the body can mirror, supporting heart rate variability and steady focus. Along the way, we name the real biology of late winter: lower serotonin availability, depleted vitamin D, and melatonin-driven phase delays that make mornings feel heavy and progress feel slow. Then we practice. The pentagonal breath - inhale, hold, exhale, hold, and a brief transition, each at five counts - delivers about five to six breaths per minute, the cardiopulmonary resonance zone. Longer exhales boost vagal tone, settling the system without sedation. Use these cycles anywhere: on a walk, at your desk, or before sleep. Layer them with golden ratio frequencies through headphones for deeper entrainment or through speakers to infuse your space with gentle order. Small cycles, repeated, build capacity: you're not forcing change; you're spiraling into it, chamber by chamber, returning with more room each time.As the equinox approaches, balance becomes a practice you can feel—counted in breaths, carried by tones, and anchored by simple rituals of renewal. If you're tired, you're not failing; you're human in a season of lag. Breathe the shape of perseverance, listen for coherence, and meet spring on your feet. If this resonates, subscribe, share with a friend who needs steadier energy, and leave a review to help others find their rhythm.Send a textSupport the show

Since the 2017 embargo, one of Qatar's greatest nightmares has been that a war or geopolitical crisis would isolate Doha from the rest of the world. In late February, renewed tensions following the Israeli-American offensive against Iran brought these concerns to the fore once again. Over the past nine years, Qatar has built up strategic reserves, but has mostly invested heavily in boosting local food production. This has been a major challenge, given the country's harsh climate. Yet today, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and even mushrooms are being cultivated in the desert. For some, eating Qatari produce has even become a national duty. Amira Souilem and Chloé Domat report.

In this episode, Gregory J. Tiesi, MD, FACS, FSSO, hosted a discussion about the growing role for transarterial microperfusion (TAMP) as a regional therapy strategy for patients with locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Dr Tiesi is the medical director of Hepatobiliary Surgery at the Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey. He was joined by: Anthony Scholer, MD, FACS, FSSO, a surgical oncologist specializing in hepatobiliary surgery at Hackensack Meridian Medical Group and Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey Eric Pletcher, MD, a surgeon specializing in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Hackensack Meridian JFK University Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey PDAC is a disease in which dense desmoplastic stroma and poor tumor vascularization often limit the effectiveness of standard systemic chemotherapy. Drs Tiesi, Scholer, and Pletcher explained that standard regimens, such as FOLFIRINOX or gemcitabine-based combinations, frequently fail to achieve adequate intratumoral drug concentrations because of these biologic barriers. TAMP aims to overcome this limitation by isolating a segment of an arterial vessel and pressure-mediated transvascular delivery, which would allow for higher local drug concentrations and reduce systemic exposure and toxicity. The experts noted that TAMP is currently being explored primarily in patients with locally advanced, unresectable pancreatic cancer without distant metastases, particularly those who have exhausted systemic treatment options but maintain localized disease. Early clinical studies, including the phase 1/2 RR1 trial (NCT02237157) and the observational RR2 dose-escalation study (NCT02591082), demonstrated that the procedure is technically feasible, repeatable, and associated with lower systemic toxicity compared with conventional chemotherapy. A pooled analysis of these studies suggested encouraging survival outcomes, particularly in patients who received prior chemoradiation, potentially because radiation modifies the tumor microenvironment and improves drug penetration. Lastly, Tiesi, Scholer and Pletcher reviewed the ongoing phase 3 TIGeR-PaC trial (NCT03257033), which is evaluating TAMP as a consolidation strategy after induction chemotherapy and radiation. Preliminary data suggest improved survival and substantially fewer serious adverse effects with TAMP vs continued systemic therapy alone. Although the experts cautioned that the approach remains investigational, they agreed that TAMP may provide meaningful local disease control and potentially expand treatment options and preserve quality of life for patients with this aggressive malignancy.

Sarah also speaks at conferences worldwide including UXLX, UX London, AIGA, Productized, Front, Industry, and more.In our conversation, we discuss:* How Sarah used research practices to pivot from product work into career strategy, and what nearly a decade of data has taught her about getting hired and promoted.* Why most job searches fall apart when people skip self-research and jump straight into resumes and portfolios.* A simple career “journey map” exercise that helps surface patterns across roles, managers, projects, and personal energy.* How a career roadmap creates focus, reduces rejection fatigue, and shapes better job decisions over time.* The role of a clear compass statement in shaping resumes, portfolios, interviews, and confidence during a search.Major takeaways from the episode* Sarah frames career growth using the same structure teams use to build products: research, synthesis, direction, and iteration. When people skip this step, job searches turn reactive and exhausting. A roadmap restores clarity and control by anchoring decisions to what actually works for you.* Resumes and portfolios break down when they're built without context. Sarah explains how a simple highs-and-lows timeline across the past year can surface repeat signals around team fit, management style, project type, and energy. Those signals matter more than any formatting tweak.* Applying to hundreds of roles creates rejection loops that drain momentum and self-trust. Sarah links this pattern to panic behavior and short-term thinking. Fewer, better-aligned applications often lead to stronger interviews and better outcomes.* Career decisions ripple into mental health, relationships, time, and identity. Sarah urges people to layer real-life constraints and goals into their roadmap so work supports the life they want, rather than consuming it.* A strong compass statement acts like a thesis for your career. It guides which roles you pursue, how you frame your experience, and how you talk about your strengths. This clarity shortens resume cycles, sharpens interviews, and restores confidence under pressure.Where to find Sarah:* Website: www.careerstrategylab.com and www.sarahdoody.com* LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/sarahdoody* Youtube: www.youtube.com/sarahdoody * Instagram: www.instagram.com/sarahdoody* Career Strategy PodcastStop piecing it together. In this Meaningful Money Q&A, Pete Matthew and Roger Weeks answer listener questions on UK personal finance, focusing on pensions, tax, and planning ahead. Topics include SIPP vs Lifetime ISA, retirement drawdown and which accounts to spend from first, Junior SIPPs, gifting company shares (IHT and CGT), and UFPLS vs drawdown. Shownotes: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/QA41 01:47 Question 1 Hello Pete, Roger and team. I'd first like to say thank you for all the wonderful information you provide, it has been a great aid for increasing my financial intelligence and helping me secure my family's financial future. My question is regarding the benefits of a SIPP vs a LISA in terms of retirement. My understanding is they both benefit loosely from the same boost. 25% Boost for LISA and in effect 25% boost to a SIPP due to the 20% tax relief as a basic rate tax payer? They are both locked away for a long period and are both released early if I was to suffer from any serious ill health or death? Due to this is there any benefit I am overlooking in terms of a SIPP over a LISA invested in a world wide fund? Other than age of access? I am currently 36 and due to the increasing demands of public finances it would be logical to assume a possibility of the state pension age being raised above 70 (above 60 if taken early) or becoming restricted to who can collect (means tested) before I am to reach pension age. Whereas I would be able to claim a LISA at 60 regardless with the added benefit of it not being subject to tax? I have a generous company pension of 6% personal and 13.7% company contributions with an additional 1% matched salary sacrifice. I also put in an additional unmatched personal 3% contribution. As well as a small military pension. so I would not be without a pension at retirement. Due to this is it worth hedging my bets by maxing my LISA contributions rather than a SIPP to cover potential future scenarios? Apologies for the long winded question and I hope it makes sense. Thank you, Adam 08:42 Question 2 Hello Pete and Roger! Thank you for your wonderful podcast, I started listening several years ago and have found your advice incredibly useful. I am here to ask a question about planning a future for a disabled child. My husband and I are in are late 30s and we have a 5 year old daughter who is autistic and has profound learning difficulties. The challenge we have is how to plan for her future care and our future careers with so much unknown. We both work full time and are currently both basic rate taxpayers (although we are both getting close to that boundary). We receive child benefit and some DLA for our daughter. When our daughter was born we started saving small amounts regularly into a JISA for her, but as her disabilities became clear we switched and started saving money for her within our own S&S ISAs. We still put money into her JISA when she gets gifts from grandparents etc as it seems disingenuous to keep that money under our names. We have an emergency fund, workplace pensions and are saving regularly into S&S ISAs, as well as mortgage that will last until we are about 60. Is there anything we should be thinking about or trying to plan for our daughter's future. At this stage, it is difficult to determine how much she will understand about money and investing or whether she would have the capability to work or live independently. It may be that she will be under our care for the rest of our lives. It is also possible that one of us may need to reduce working hours or stop working when she turns 18 and needs care after she leaves school. Is there anything you think we should consider or advice on how to navigate the unknown? We are in the process of putting together a will and in the event of something happening to both of us, the care of our daughter would be covered by my husband's sister, but unsure how to navigate the financials. I appreciate that there are several questions within this question but any advice or areas that we can research on ourselves would be appreciated. Thank you so much, Laura Centurion (specialist IFA for people with children with special needs) https://centurioncfp.co.uk/special-needs/ Scope https://www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-support 16:34 Question 3 Hello First of all, thank you both for your wonderful podcast. I have learned so much. I have a question about the order in which to spend in retirement and how to hold our various investments. We have worked out a cashflow ladder using cash, short-term money markets funds, a defensive mixed asset fund, a 60:40 mixed asset fund and a 100% equity fund. But we also need to think about our various wrappers- about half of our investments are in DC pensions (mine and my husband's), a quarter in ISAs and a quarter unwrapped (which we can gradually move into ISAs). Is there a rule of thumb for how much of each investment should be in each wrapper? I'm also not sure about what we should be spending first- assuming no disasters we are hoping to give some money to our children before too long for IHT purposes. But if we take a large sum out of our pensions to do this, we'll pay 45% income tax on it which makes the IHT saving a bit pointless. So should we be making any gifts from our ISAs and using the pensions first ourselves (taking care to stay within the basic rate)? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you Elizabeth Meaningful Academy Retirement Planning - https://meaningfulacademy.com/retirementplanning For a discount, use coupon code: PODCAST 24:03 Question 4 Hi Roger (and Pete!), Firstly, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the education you provide to me and so many others. You've really helped me sharpen my financial tools. After spending the last 12 years self-employed, I didn't take my personal finances too seriously. Now that I have a steady, "grown-up" job, I've been able to get organised. I have a workplace pension, a private pension, a Stocks & Shares ISA, and a Lifetime ISA, all thanks to what I've learned from you both. My question is about Junior SIPPs. I often come across opinions suggesting that these should be the last thing you do, only after every other financial base is covered. I didn't receive a financial education growing up, and there's no pot of gold or property waiting for me down the inheritance road. That's why I'm motivated to change the course of my children's future — even if the benefit is far down the line. For a relatively modest target amount £15,000 each at age 18 (they are currently 1 and 4), I believe my children could have a very strong footing in later life due to the extensive length of compounding available, even without continuing contributions beyond that point, or perhaps with me matching their own contributions as an incentive in adulthood. I believe this will take some of the pressure off them which I currently find myself in having to aggressively play catch up on my retirement plan. They also have Junior ISAs, which I contribute to each month, to give them more flexible money when they turn 18. Their future stability would mean the world to me, even if I won't be here at that point to see them enjoy it! I'd love to hear your opinion on Junior SIPPs, as I don't think this topic is discussed enough — and it sometimes feels dismissed altogether. Thank you, Steven 29:15 Question 5 Dear Pete and Roger, You do marvellous work in educating us all. Thank you. I am a company director with 9 alphabet shares. 5 for me, 2 for my wife and one each for my adult independent children. I have substantial IHT liability so want to gift my shares to my children. The company has seven figures invested in the stock market. Can I gift the shares? How do I go about? Will that help reduce my IHT liability if I survive 7 years after gifting? Will there be a CGT liability on the gift? The company still trades but is unlikely to qualify for BADR (Business Asset Disposal Relief) as majority of assets are in investments. Thanking you, Narendra 36:35 Question 6 Hi Pete and Rog, Firstly, thanks for all that you do, your podcasts, videos and the Academy have really changed mine and my family's life for the better. A pensions drawdown question: If you plan to use all of your tax free allowance on retirement. Am I right that there are no benefits to using UFPLS over drawdown? I think there used to be a benefit with the lifetime allowance but I can't see any other benefits now. Thanks for all that you do, James
There's no shortage of debate around ethanol and gasoline with the summer driving season just around the corner. Farm and biofuels groups are pushing hard for policies favoring expanded ethanol use, while refiners are lobbying for changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard to make it less complex and unpredictable. The current spike in fuel prices adds another (though likely short-term) component to the debate. Today, we'll dive into the debate, focusing on ethanol blending policies.
