On the night of March 9, 1963, officers Karl Hettinger and Ian Campbell made a traffic stop on the corner of Carlos Avenue and Gower Street and Hollywood. Early that day, the officers had been instructed to seek out and bust anyone they suspected of being engaged in gay sexual activity, and that night they were confident they'd found two men that fit the bill. However, after Campbell instructed both men to step out of the car, the driver, Gregory Powell, pulled out a pistol and held it on Campbell, effectively disarming him, while other man, Jimmy Smith, disarmed Hettinger. The two officers were then forced into Powell's car and driven more than one hundred miles away, where they executed Ian Campbell, while Hettinger escaped into a nearby onion field and managed to find help at the home of a farmer. The murder of Ian Campbell in the onion field shocked residents of California, not only because it was so cold-blooded, but also because of how the incident unfolded. By yielding to the demands of their hostage taker and handing over his gun, many people felt that Hettinger was at least partially responsible for Campbell's death. Powell and Smith were quickly captured, tried, and convicted for the murder, but the consequences of that night in the onion field would have a profound and lasting effect on police policy all over the country for years to come.Recommendations in this episodeFollow @themhoffers Follow @annaleegrace15 ( YouTube or Instagram)Follow @ChefRileyMeehan and Purchase his book A Little Bit ExtraReferencesAssociated Press. 1963. Last week, we walked through the timeline of Troy Galloway's disappearance and the events that unfolded in the days leading up to January 13, 2016. We learned how, after years of building a life and a steady support network in Santa Cruz, California, Troy moved to Sonora with his wife, placing hours of distance between himself and the people who had always been his safety net. Troy was a devoted father to his young son, but the distance made it difficult to maintain that same level of involvement in his life after the move.On January 15, 2016, Troy's mother, Nancy, received a message from his wife telling her that Troy had disappeared two days earlier. Nancy was confused and alarmed by what she was hearing. His wife said Troy had run out of the house, underdressed for the cold, and never returned. After that exchange, Troy was finally reported missing, but a miscommunication between local agencies delayed getting the case to the appropriate investigators and beginning the search for Troy.Over time, pieces of information slowly came together. Neighbors recalled hearing a disturbance at Crystal Falls Lake on the night Troy vanished. Years later, advances in technology enabled investigators to interpret Troy's phone data with greater clarity, suggesting that his phone had been near the lake around the time he disappeared. For a long time, this became the guiding theory: that Troy had somehow ended up in the water. That idea guided the investigation, culminating in an extensive, highly coordinated search effort. Crystal Falls Lake was drained, scanned, and combed through by forensic specialists, dogs, and sonar teams. But when the search turned up no trace of Troy or his belongings, the explanation that had once seemed most likely suddenly stood on shaky ground. If Troy wasn't in the lake, then the story everyone had been leaning on for years no longer fit, and the investigation was forced back to its earliest questions. This week, we're going to dig deeper into what Troy's loved ones learned about his time in Sonora, what they began to uncover about the dynamics within his marriage, and the questions that still haunt Troy's family as they enter the tenth year of searching for answers. If you have any information about the disappearance of Troy Galloway, please contact the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office at (209) 533-5855.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Before Jamie Haller launched her namesake shoe and apparel brand, she worked behind the scenes in the fashion industry in corporate retail. In the 2000s, she designed pieces for big brands of the era like Wet Seal, Guess, and Bebe. After learning the ins and outs of fashion production at a macro level, Haller left the corporate world to work for smaller brands where she had more creative control over her work, allowing her to hone her style as a designer. During the pandemic, she wanted to venture outside of what she knew and landed in a different realm of design: home renovation. Her eye for fashion translated well in the world of interiors, allowing her to gain clients quickly and make a name for herself in the space. Haller's love for trying new things also led her to a new category of fashion she hadn't yet conquered: shoes. In 2020, she launched her namesake shoe line and released her now-famous penny loafer style that has become an everyday staple for countless fashion insiders. She later returned to her roots when she expanded into apparel with a line she created with women like her in mind. Today, she's brought the many skills and talents she's acquired over the years together with her first storefront in Montecito, California, where you can shop her brand in an intimate space she designed herself.

When the air is thick with wildfire smoke, people are advised to stay home. At Hastings Natural History Preserve in California, Acorn Woodpeckers do the same. These gregarious birds live in family groups and frequently visit their neighbors while foraging. Using tiny radio transmitters, scientists tracked the movements of Acorn Woodpeckers during the summer of 2020 when wildfire smoke blanketed the preserve. On smoky days, woodpeckers spent more of their time at home. And when they did leave their territories, they didn't venture far and visited fewer neighbors than usual. Published in Current Biology in 2023, the findings suggest that harm caused by wildfires go far beyond the blaze itself. As megafires become more common in our changing climate, even more birds could be affected by wildfire smoke in the future.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Bryce Bennett has a new title, and it's his favorite one yet: dad. The two-time Olympic skier is going for his third Olympic Team. Bryce is 33 and has spent nearly half his life on the U.S. Ski Team. Bryce and his wife, Kelley, welcomed their first child, a daughter, this spring. "You have this thing that is totally dependent on you," Bennett said. "You're in total love with it. And you will do anything to give it as many opportunities as you can." One of those opportunities will be a front row seat to her dad trying to make his third Olympic Team after 14 years of competing with the U.S. Ski Team around the world. "Kelley is going to come over, and we're going to rent an apartment and spend a lot of time in Europe this winter. The little baby is going to come over, and we're just going to live life and figure it out," Bennett said. Bryce grew up in Tahoe City, CA, and skied at Palisades Tahoe as a kid. He was a teenager when he made the U.S. Ski Team. In the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, he finished 17th (Super G-Men) and 19th (Downhill - Men). In the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, he finished 16th (Downhill - Men) and 17th (Super Combined - Men). His goal for 2026? "My ideal year this year would be have an insane season, which is doable. Win the Olympics, take your trophies, and put them deep in the basement. And then go on and live your life," Bennett said. Bryce is known for a few things off the snow. One, he has a lot of hobbies, including fishing. You'll see as many "big ole fish" pictures on his Instagram feed as you do ski runs. The second is his incredible sense of humor. And that's why I picked Bryce to lead off our launch of Dying to Ask: The Road to Milan-Cortina. Get ready to laugh out loud as Bryce describes what it's like to be a pro skier when you're 6 feet 7 inches tall. Find out why being a parent as a winter Olympic athlete is like being a unicorn on the U.S. Olympic Team. And get some perspective on why being in tunnel vision with a goal is pointless. On this Dying to Ask: The Road to Milan-Cortina: How rare it is to be a parent on the U.S. Olympic Team The edge Olympians say parenthood gives them How Bryce stays motivated after spending nearly half his life on the U.S. Ski Team The value of having hobbies outside your day job Other places to listen CLICK HERE to listen on iTunes CLICK HERE to listen on Stitcher CLICK HERE to listen on Spotify See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

October 20th 1967 is a day burned in to most lovers of Bigfoot as the day everything changed with 59 seconds of footage of alleged undiscovered hominid striding through Bluff Creek in California. For the two men who caught that footage, Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin, life would never be the same again and in his new film, Bigfoot Enterprises: The Trueish Adventures of Patterson and Gimlin, director Eric Fulford and his writers Mark Schwartz and Mark Yellen set their sights of telling the story of the aftermath and the madness this entails. Eric is a lifelong Bigfoot enthusiast and genuinely passionate about doing justice to the legend. He's got great stories from pre-production and what it takes to bring a cryptid to life on screen. Eric has made a career digging into the dusty reels of American storytelling, from the punk-legend skate myth of DAY AT THE POOL to the surreal Hollywood spiral of THE PLATINUM LOOP. Send us a textA simple plan to tackle Nevada's ET Highway turns into a cross-state quest for awe. We kick things off in Phoenix and climb toward Flagstaff, chasing a crisp horizon and a stop at a veterans memorial built to catch the sun at 11:11 on 11/11. The Grand Canyon delivers that familiar shock of scale from new South Rim overlooks, and then Route 66 starts pulling us back in time. Seligman feels like a living postcard, Kingman frames your car under an iconic sign, and Oatman steals the show with wooden storefronts, a daily shootout, and wild burros who wander the street like they own it.We veer into California for Joshua Tree National Park and watch the landscape morph into Dr. Seuss silhouettes and boulder gardens. Earthcaches push us off the road to touch geology, and the golden-hour light makes even the cholla glow. On the way back, a roadside cache under a giant Coke bottle and a plane casually landing for supplies remind us that desert highways never run out of surprises. Then it's Vegas for a quick reset, where budget-friendly beds come with steep fees and the food is pricey but memorable. We meet friends, pull the slot lever once, and wake up early for the main event.Nine cars. Thousands of caches. A system that replaces every container and turns a blank desert shoulder into a well-oiled route. The ET Highway demands patience, spare tires, and teamwork, but the payoff is huge: a full sweep logged and a convoy full of stories. Tonopah adds color with dinner at the Mizpah Hotel—said to be the most haunted in America—and a stroll past the Clown Motel and its neighboring historic cemetery, where hand-stamped plaques record how lives ended in stark detail. It's a raw counterpoint to the neon a few hours south. The finale is pure future: The Sphere and The Wizard of Oz in 16K. The tornado brings wind and cold across the seats. Snow drifts from the ceiling. Apples drop. And flying monkeys become drones circling overhead. It's the classic film, intact, surrounded by AI-extended worldbuilding that turns watching into inhabiting. If the Grand Canyon is a natural wonder that humbles, this is a man-made wonder that lifts your jaw and won't let go. Hit play for the full route, the geocaching tactics, the small-town gems, and a cinematic experience you'll be talking about for weeks. Priscilla Ward joins Dr. Sandie Morgan as they explore how true healing happens not through fixing or rescuing, but by learning to sit in discomfort, lead with curiosity, and create consistent communities where survivors can feel safe enough to begin their journey at their own pace. https://youtube.com/shorts/Jsi6YO3zobw?feature=share Priscilla Ward Priscilla Ward, LCSW, is the Founder and Clinical Director of Compass Rose Psychotherapy in Fullerton, California. With over 18 years in the helping profession and 15 years of clinical experience, she has dedicated her career to supporting youth, young adults, and families through trauma, anxiety, substance use, and grief. A graduate of the University of Southern California with a Master's in Social Work, Priscilla brings extensive experience from nonprofit agencies, community mental health clinics, correctional facilities, and school-based programs. She has led mental health teams for the Orange County Department of Education, developing trauma-responsive programs and training professionals in high-stress environments. Her bilingual Spanish fluency and cultural responsiveness make her a trusted ally across diverse communities. Beyond direct practice, Priscilla serves as a consultant and trainer, equipping educators, faith leaders, law enforcement personnel, and mental health professionals with trauma-informed, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing frameworks. Key Points People heal in community and relationship, not in isolation, and this healing process is rarely linear—it's complex and messy, especially for those who have experienced trauma. The shift from "what's wrong with this person" to "what happened to this person" is foundational to trauma-informed care and creates space for dignity and compassion over judgment. Harm reduction is a philosophy grounded in meeting people where they are, honoring their dignity even when they aren't ready to stop certain behaviors, and recognizing that small steps matter because keeping people alive and safe creates opportunities for future healing. Faith communities can love people well by learning to sit in discomfort and resist the urge to fix or rescue, instead focusing on building belonging without requiring behavioral compliance as a prerequisite. Understanding the stages of change (pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and sometimes relapse) helps helpers meet survivors appropriately at each stage rather than imposing expectations they're not ready for. Secondary trauma and burnout are real costs of caring, and taking care of our own wellness is critically important because we need to be healthy people in the room to truly serve others without reinforcing harm. Trust is the bridge for change, and consistency creates safety that literally rewires the brain—centering connection over correction leads to systemic change in how we support survivors. Listening to voices of lived experience is essential; helpers should ask "what do you need" rather than assuming they know what survivors need. Resources Compass Rose Psychotherapy Transcript [00:00:00] Priscilla Ward: what harm reduction looks like in my community might be very different than yours, but the spirit of harm reduction can be applied. Anywhere and everywhere. [00:00:11] Delaney: You know that uncomfortable space where things aren't neat or solved, what if that's where the real healing starts? Today's conversation leans into that gray area. The space where our instinct to fix meets the deeper need to simply be present. [00:00:25] When we let go of control and step into curiosity, we make room for safety, dignity, and real connection. That kind of community can change everything. Hi, I'm Delaney Menninger. On this episode, OpenAI's chief economist Ronnie Chatterji describes how artificial intelligence is reshaping both the economy and scientific innovation. Ronnie discusses the dual economic impacts of AI — the near-term boost from infrastructure investments like chips and data centers, and the longer-term productivity gains as AI tools integrate into enterprises and consumer life. Beyond consumer convenience, he notes, the key question for economists and corporate leaders alike is when — and how — AI will unlock sustained economic value inside organizations. Tune in for Ronnie's perspective on how AI can help researchers test ideas faster, combine insights across disciplines, and make better choices about which problems to pursue. Read the episode transcript here. Guest bio: Aaron (Ronnie) Chatterji is OpenAI's first chief economist. He is also the Mark Burgess & Lisa Benson-Burgess Distinguished Professor at Duke University. He served in the Biden administration to implement the CHIPS and Sciences Act and was acting deputy director of the National Economic Council. Before that, he was chief economist at the Department of Commerce and a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He also previously taught at Harvard Business School, worked at Goldman Sachs, and was a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd continue their month-long celebration of the holiday season by exploring the remarkable artistry of Joni Mitchell. Few songwriters have shaped modern music the way Mitchell has, and this conversation dives into the emotional, poetic, and deeply human qualities that define her work. They begin with “River,” the modern holiday classic that captures the bittersweet tone often missing from traditional seasonal music. From there, they step into the wide landscape of Mitchell's catalog, discussing the shifting perspectives of “Both Sides Now,” the bright optimism of “Chelsea Morning,” and the poignant reflections found in “The Circle Game.”Tim the Nerd and Professor Aubrey also examine the understated storytelling of “For Free,” the environmental urgency of “Big Yellow Taxi,” and the raw intimacy woven through “A Case of You.” Rounding out the conversation are deeper looks at the wanderlust of “California,” the rhythmic warmth of “Carey,” and the generational anthem “Woodstock.”Whether listeners know Mitchell's music by heart or are encountering her work with fresh ears, this episode offers a thoughtful, engaging look at why her songs endure—especially during a season built on reflection, memory, and meaning.Check out the Joni Mitchell Playlist on YouTube. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. In this wide-ranging conversation, Mark Moss joins us to unpack the forces reshaping money, technology, and power in the modern world. From his early days as a tech entrepreneur in California to becoming one of Bitcoin's most recognized educators and investors, Mark shares the personal journey that led him into macroeconomics—and ultimately into Bitcoin. We dig into his “cycles” framework, exploring how history moves in pendulum swings between centralization and decentralization roughly every 250 years, powered by recurring political, financial, and technological shifts. Mark explains why Bitcoin and AI sit at the center of today's “decentralized revolution,” and why AI isn't purely centralizing or decentralizing—but both at once. The discussion then turns to the real-world implications of Bitcoin as a tool for reducing the “return on violence” compared to fiat systems, and how that changes the incentives for governments and institutions. We move deeper into the 40-year bond market cycle, the growing crisis in fixed-income markets, and why aging demographics and financial repression are pushing trillions in capital to search for a new foundation. Finally, Mark shares insights from launching a Bitcoin treasury company in the UK—Satsuma—why demand for Bitcoin-backed yield instruments is exploding, and what the future may look like as traditional finance collides with a new Bitcoin-based base layer. If you're interested in macro, Bitcoin adoption, institutional shifts, and what comes next for global finance, this one is packed.Timestamps04:54 Mark Foss: Journey into Bitcoin and Macro Economics10:06 Cycles of Change: Understanding Economic and Technological Shifts15:11 The Dual Nature of AI: Centralization vs Decentralization19:48 The Return on Violence: Bitcoin vs Fiat24:59 The Bond Market Cycle: Implications for the Future30:00 Satsuma: Launching a Bitcoin Treasury in the UK#Bitcoin #MarkMoss #macroeconomics Subscribe to our channel and hit the bell "

From the moment she was a child on the Marine Corps Base in Oahu, she felt it—an awareness that seemed to rise from the ground beneath her feet, follow her through sterile school hallways, and settle into the shadows of her home. Dreams of a girl in a long blue dress, sprinting for her life. A locket slipping between wooden steps. A whisper inside a bathroom stall spelling out her name and a command she didn't understand. But Hawaii wasn't the end. Whatever watched her there crossed the ocean with her. It appeared in the doorways of California bedrooms, rattled locks, dragged footsteps across the second floor, and—one terrible night—wrapped invisible fingers around her ankle as she climbed the stairs. Even years later, inside a college dorm miles away from the places she thought she'd escaped, she still heard the shuffling footsteps of something that refused to forget her. Psychics would later tell her she was “sensitive.” But sensitivity doesn't explain the violence. Or the timing. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In 12/06/25. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS After 5 fruitless years of investigating, White enforcement officials made an arrest in connection to the pipe bombs placed at the Washington D.C Republican and Democratic facilities on the even of the January 6, 2021 terrorist attacks. Brian J. Cole Jr., a black male and VA resident, was taken into custody on suspicion of the being the culprit for the IEDs. We'll also discuss President Trump's Racist remarks targeting so called Somalians. He blamed these non-white people for "trashing" Minnesota, and said we should prohibit them from entering the so called country. Surprisingly, many White people immediately branded Trump's comments as Racist. We'll also pay our respects to San Francisco legend Claude the albino alligator. The pale reptile died at the age of 30, which is relatively young for his species. Apparently, Claude lived a great life and was shouted out and sincerely mourned by many California elected officials. They may lower the state flag to half staff to honor their late albino mascot. #BlackMentalHealth INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

This week on the Run the Riot Podcast, we're hanging out with ultrarunner Mason Phillips — and what a story this guy brings to the trail! From growing up in California to working remote trail systems in Alaska, Mason's path to ultrarunning is as rugged and adventurous as the mountains he trains in. At just 26, he's already crushed a 100-miler at Rio Del Lago and took on the monster that is the Moab 240 — and did it with grit, creativity, and just a little bit of chaos (spoiler: he carried dog food as training weight and wore trash bags for warmth during a bike race). We talk about: How Mason transitioned from college rugby to thru-hiking and long ultras The trail magic that led to meeting fellow ultrarunner Nick Fowler on the PCT Why he chose the Moab 240 as his first 200+ mile race What it was like running solo for nearly 100 miles without a crew His fueling, sleep strategy, and how he managed Alaska's snow while training for a desert race Lessons learned, including why efficiency beats perfection every time And yes — he beat David Goggins. Mason brings a refreshing, raw perspective to the world of ultra racing — not everything has to be perfectly planned to achieve something incredible. If you've ever thought about going farther, pushing harder, or embracing the unknown in your running journey, this episode is for you. Video and show notes: http://www.theriot.run/masonp

In this timely and eye-opening interview, host Mark Alyn sits down with Kevin Busque, Head of Gusto 401(k) powered by Guideline, to break down what California small-business owners urgently need to know about the state's retirement savings mandate—and why waiting could be a costly mistake. With the December 31, 2025 compliance deadline rapidly approaching, California employers with as few as one W-2 employee are legally required to offer a retirement savings option. Business owners must either enroll employees in the state-run CalSavers IRA program or implement a qualified private retirement plan, such as a 401(k). Yet, according to recent research shared in the interview, nearly 75% of small-business owners are unaware of CalSavers, and 65% don't realize they could face fines of up to $750 per employee for missing deadlines. Kevin clearly explains the penalty structure, which begins with $250 per eligible employee after 90 days of noncompliance and escalates to an additional $500 per employee after 180 days. But this conversation goes far beyond warnings—it's about smart, strategic action. Kevin outlines how today's modern 401(k) plans are far more affordable, flexible, and tax-advantaged than many business owners realize. With new federal tax credits and simplified administration, retirement plans are no longer just for big corporations. Mark and Kevin also explore how offering a quality retirement benefit can do more than satisfy a mandate—it can boost recruitment, strengthen employee loyalty, enhance your employer brand, and align with long-term business growth. Kevin's entrepreneurial background and leadership at Guideline and Gusto add practical insight into how small companies can implement powerful benefits without overwhelming cost or complexity. This interview is a must-watch for any California business owner who wants to avoid penalties, stay compliant, and turn a regulatory requirement into a competitive advantage. #CaliforniaBusiness #SmallBusinessOwners #RetirementPlanning #CalSavers #401kPlans #EmployeeBenefits #BusinessCompliance #MarkAlyn #Gusto401k #GuidelineRetirement #Entrepreneurship #HRCompliance #WorkplaceBenefitsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/late-night-health-radio--2804369/support.

At a Halloween party in Los Angeles, a tense altercation broke out between Ray J and Sean "Diddy" Combs' sons—Christian, Quincy, and Justin Combs. The conflict reportedly began after Ray J made disparaging comments about Diddy, which offended the Combs brothers. The exchange quickly escalated, becoming heated as verbal jabs were traded between Ray J and the brothers. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with onlookers unsure if the situation would turn violent. Ray J, known for his confrontational style, seemed unyielding during the argument, which further intensified the clash.Just as the altercation appeared on the brink of becoming physical, Chris Brown, who was also present at the event, intervened. Brown managed to de-escalate the situation, stepping between the parties and calming tensions before they could spiral out of control. His timely intervention prevented a potential brawl, diffusing a highly charged moment. While none of the individuals involved have commented publicly on the incident, it underscores the often unpredictable nature of interactions within the celebrity world, where personal grievances can quickly become public spectacles.(commercial at 9:00)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Diddy's sons got into a 'heated' clash with celebrities outside Halloween party amid dad's legal woes | Daily Mail Online

Yet again, Washington's Democratic Socialist representative Sean Scott wants to tax businesses into oblivion with a statewide payroll tax—because apparently $9.4 billion in new taxes this year wasn't enough. While moderate Bellevue Mayor Lynn Robinson warns this will be "detrimental to everybody," Scott thinks he can squeeze $3 billion more from the corporations that actually fund everything in this state. What could go wrong? We break down how Seattle's payroll tax already pushed 10,000 jobs to Bellevue, where businesses can operate without getting fleeced at every turn. Meanwhile, Scott—a proud member of Democratic Socialists of America—argues we need to "spread the wealth around" while completely ignoring that these same businesses provide the tax base that funds his beloved social programs. Meta just declined to expand in Bellevue this week. Coincidence? Is anyone surprised that socialism's track record of spectacular failure doesn't deter these ideologues? How long before Washington becomes California 2.0 with a taxpayer exodus every 30 minutes? Subscribe and hit the bell—because this trainwreck is just getting started.

We dive into the craft of writing and editing, the fascinating (and sometimes bizarre) history of Pasadena, and even wander into the territory of near-death experiences and what they reveal about being alive.
