Hey yall, Alex here, let me catch you up! I came back from vacation expecting to cover Fable 5 after a week of using it. The first two days after we all first got access to a Mythos level model were super exciting! But then the news hit, US Government issued an order banning Anthropic from giving access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to any foreign national, causing Anthropic to pull the models completely (even internally to their employees!). So, this wasn't the show I planned, but it turned into a great show about Open Source, as two models hit the top rankings and are both MIT licence, filling a Fable shaped hole in our hearts!GLM released 5.2 with folks really excited about it web building capabilities, and Kimi 2.7 Code released (and is available on CW Inference with crazy speeds!). We also saw the SpaceX IPO and Cursor $60B acquisition, Noam Shazeer joining Open and Midjourney, the image company, launching a new Ultrasound full body scanner to kill MRIs! Great show today with Dexter Horthy from HumanLayer, Chris Van Pelt and Adrian Swanberg from W&B announcing our new product HiveMind and Tanishq Abraham came back to help cover Midjourney's new Ultrasound scanner! Let's dive in!ThursdAI - Highest signal weekly AI news show is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The US Government bans Fable 5! (X, Anthropic statement)Here's a story in 3 parts: * Anthropic announces Mythos 5 preview - saying that this model is to dangerous to release, and only gives corporations access to it via project GlassWing. * Anthropic works hard on limitations and safery and releases Fable 5 (same weights as Mythos 5) built with guardrails so strong it refuses to do any cybersecurity tasks and switches back to Opus frequently* US Government receives a tip (reportedly from Amazon) that Fable 5 can be jailbroken to do cybersecurity tasks, and issues an order to Anthropic, citing national security concerns, banning them from giving access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to any foreign national, causing Anthropic to pull the models completely (even internally to their employees!)This is the first time that we see the US Government directly intervene in the AI space and restrict access to frontier models. The most updated reporting on this I could find is that Anthropic and US Government officials are in the process of negotiating a safe release framework. Given that preventing all jailbreaks is impossible, I hope they will land on a solution that gives me Fable 5 back! This hit especially hard because last week we were all high on Fable. Not in the usual AI Twitter benchmark sense, in the actual “oh, this is a different level” sense. Me and my wife Fable maxxed throughout our flight to Vacation. Peter had saved outputs he kept going back to because other models suddenly felt like a step down. Dexter later said it was the closest he had felt in a while to the old “I need to keep prompting this thing overnight” feeling.Peter Gostev made a point that stuck with me. It's easy for us in the bubble to call this ridiculous, and on the technical merits it kind of is. But if you've spent weeks telling normal people “this thing is like a nuclear weapon, it'll take everyone's jobs,” and then someone asks “okay, can you make it safe?” and the answer is “no, I can't,” then you can see how an outsider lands on “well, maybe you shouldn't have it.” His takeaway, and I agree: we need to be way more careful with the imagery we use, because the nuclear-weapon framing came home to roost. The bigger questions are the scary ones. Wolfram framed it as a sovereign AI wake-up call, and he's right. For the first time we're seeing a real gap in intelligence available to people based on their nationality. Imagine building a company on a model that an outside government can switch off with one letter. Peter pointed out it's commercially bad for the US but completely disastrous for Europe, which has basically one frontier lab and a pile of startups that suddenly look very exposed. And there's the obvious irony Nisten enjoyed a little too much: the Europeans who spent years lecturing everyone about AI restrictions just got restrictions imposed on them.If anyone in the government is listening: we want Fable back, please.SpaceX IPOs and acquires Cursor for $60B (X)SpaceX went and did the largest IPO in the history of the world, around seventy-five billion dollars, which on a roughly two-trillion-dollar valuation made Elon the first trillionaire. (Did anything materially change for him? No. He can still fly his private plane. There's nothing left to buy.) Three days later, SpaceX exercised its option and bought Cursor (Anysphere) for sixty billion dollars in an all-stock deal, paid in shares minted at the IPO and now trading around $211. The four Cursor co-founders are all billionaires now. Largest software acquisition ever, and for SpaceX it's barely a blip on the radar. Why are we covering a stock-market story? Because it's not really a coding-tools story, it's an AI story. Cursor gave away its IDE to a lot of people while collecting their data, then quietly became a training company with Composer. SpaceX/xAI was always strong on compute and weak on code, and the missing ingredient was exactly that kind of data. Now Composer 2.5 is already showing up rebranded inside the xAI stack, and if you pay for X Premium you can use it. Composer 3, trained on the Memphis supercluster, is reportedly coming very soon and is going to hit hard.Nisten's take was the spicy one. For the data alone it's worth it, because xAI now has insight into how essentially every enterprise that touched Cursor operates. And he had zero sympathy for the companies that assumed “no data retention for training” meant the data was actually gone. We see in legal cases all the time that deleted data is still there. His view: it should have gone open source.Cursor has over a million paying customers, $2.6 billion in revenue, projected to hit $6 to $10 billion by end of 2026. But here's the thing that matters for us, the AI coding angle. Cursor was one of Anthropic's biggest revenue pipelines because Composer runs on Claude under the hood. That pipeline is now owned by xAI. They're already jointly training Grok 4.3, a 1.5 trillion parameter model, with Cursor's proprietary coding data injected directly into pre-training, not fine-tuning. Pre-training. That's a fundamentally different thing. Composer 2.5 was already Pareto dominant on coding benchmarks before the deal closed. Now pair that with Colossus, the biggest GPU cluster in the world. Will this be enough to put XAI (now SpaceXAI) at the frontline of the AI race? Will Grok 5 be Fable level code? We'll find out. Either way, this is the most consequential AI acquisition we've seen. Period.Open Source AI GLM-5.2 takes the open source crown (X, Blog, HF, Docs)Z.ai dropped GLM-5.2 and it's now the strongest open source model for coding and long-horizon work. The headline number: 74.4% on FrontierSWE, which measures whether an agent can finish full engineering projects over hours. That trails Opus 4.8 by about one point and beats GPT-5.5. On Terminal-Bench 2.1 it jumps to 81% from GLM-5.1's 63.5%, which is a big leap. It's a 753B parameter MoE, MIT licensed, no regional restrictions, weights on HuggingFace. The 1M context window is real and usable, backed by a clever IndexShare technique that cuts per-token FLOPs by about 2.9x at full context. People are reporting roughly 8x cost savings versus Opus 4.8 for comparable quality on real coding tasks. The most interesting thing on the show was that this was a confusing release, in a good way. Peter put it well: normally a catching-up lab ships cherry-picked benchmarks and then independent testing deflates them. Here it's the opposite, almost every benchmark holds up, even crossing above Fable at certain points, and yet when he actually used it over a couple of days he wasn't blown away. His verdict, and I think it's the calibration we needed: this is clearly an amazing model, and the fact that it's open and you can run it is incredible, but it is nowhere near Fable, and it would frankly be implausible if a 700-odd-billion-parameter model matched a model that's rumored to be in the trillions. Though, I think the comparison to Fable is really really unfair, and the comments online seem to suggest that 5.2 from GLM is a banger model. Just looking at this Harvey benchmark on legal tasks from Vals, a benchmark that there's 0 chance Z.ai folks have seen! GLM 5.2 scores #3 on this benchmark! Just after Fable and Opus, and per TeorTaxes on X, previous GLM 5.1 scored an absolute 0% on this one! Where it genuinely shines is design. On Design Arena, which is a head-to-head ELO vote, people have been picking GLM-5.2's website designs over Fable's by a real margin (around 1360 to 1350). LDJ's framing is the one I buy: specialization is becoming valuable again, and GLM is clearly leaning into front-end design and taste. Wolfram added the necessary asterisk, every benchmark only tells you the model did well on that specific test, so “as good as Fable” should always carry the “on this benchmark, with these tasks” disclaimer. Fair. I'd just say this: I don't want to compare everything to Fable, because we can't even use Fable anymore. Compared to the models we can actually touch, GLM-5.2 is a fantastic deal.Kimi K2.7 Code from Moonshot (X, HF, Announcement)The other big drop. Kimi is the darling of open source while we wait on DeepSeek, and Moonshot shipped K2.7 Code, a 1 trillion parameter MoE built specifically for coding, available through Kimi Code and the API, with a modified MIT license. The standout for me isn't a single benchmark, it's efficiency: roughly 30% fewer reasoning tokens than K2.6, which matters enormously when you're running long agentic loops that burn tokens like crazy. Benchmark jumps over K2.6 are real (+21.8% on their Code Bench v2, +11% on Program Bench), though Peter and Wolfram both noticed something odd, on a few benchmarks including their Agentic Arena, the older K2.6 actually edged out K2.7. The likely explanation is that K2.7 is narrowly trained for code with reduced reasoning, so it may trade away some general capability. Moonshot themselves recommend K2.6 for general non-coding tasks. Also worth knowing: it's not multimodal, no vision, which is a real gap for coding these days. And thinking-off isn't supported, it's reasoning-on by default. The model is available on our CW Inference, with the fastest token streaming in the industry, over 280 tok/s (Announcement, try it), with very decent pricing $0.94 - $0.19 - $4.00 (input - cached - output) per million tokens. MICHAEL HERBERT joins me to talk about TIMESLIPFirst broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on March 22nd 2026.TIMESLIP was a children's science fiction series made by ATV for the ITV network back in the early nineteen-seventies. It starred CHERYL BURFIELD as Liz Skinner and SPENCER BANKS as Simon Randall, two teenage actors who manage to hold their own playing against some of the finest television character actors working at that time, including DENNIS QUILLEY, JOHN BARRON, DEREK BENFIELD, IRIS RUSSELL, DAVID GRAHAM and IAIN FAIRBAIRN.Running across twenty-four episodes made in full colour (most of which now only survive in black & white), and consisting of four serials of thought-provoking, philosophical, and time-jumping adventures (THE WRONG END OF TIME, THE TIME OF THE ICE BOX, THE YEAR OF THE BURN UP and THE DAY OF THE CLONE), the series ran from September 1970 through to March 1971, and is fondly remembered by the generation that sat down after school to enjoy it and found that it somehow managed to sear itself into their memories and stimulate their imagination. This week an old friend of the show, MICHAEL HERBERT, got in touch to tell me that he'd been watching TIMESLIP, and wondered if I might want to talk about it. Naturally I'm always happy when someone suggests a topic for VISION ON SOUND, and today's edition is the result of the conversation we had which, whilst prompted by TIMESLIP did take us off in other directions to discuss other television series that had a similar style. As ever, when your chat involves a certain amount of spontaneity, and you're working without copious notes, sometimes facts and memories can get a little confused. So I apologise in advance if any of the details got a little fuzzy, but the enthusiasm for what the show was about does, I hope, still shine through, and we'll put the rest down to interference via the fourth dimension.Incidentally, the TIMESLIP event that I mentioned is on APRIL the 18th at the QUAD in Derby, if you want to find out more just head over to their website derbyquad.co.uk/eventsPLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 62: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: In case you somehow missed it, Kash Patel's enablers at the FBI (Fan Boys International) were busily denying he went to Italy for the Olympics just to see the hockey game and jock-sniff the victorious U.S. team when all sorts of video leaked out of the dressing room showing him doing exactly that - dancing, drinking, cringing. And then Patel himself couldn't resist Supposedly we sent 100 agents to help with security and he just had to be there. Guesstimated cost just for his latest stage of his perpetual vacation on our dime? $400,000. It would be bad - a future administration will probably address it as misappropriation of funds. But what makes it worse is there's a piece by Patel from 2022 complaining about previous FBI directors wasting money on vacation, and a clip about his FBI predecessor Christopher Wray's vacation travel. Simply impeaching him is insufficient. He needs to go to prison. NOT THAT TRUMP WOULD DO THAT; THIS IS THE BEHAVIOR TRUMP TEACHES: Trump is a thief and he owes you and me at least 293 billion dollars - and we want it back. The worst thief in American history - and 270 billion of that is in tariffs. Because on tariffs, the Supreme Court has given him his COMEUPPANCE. Well – it’s given him A comeuppance. Because his new argument for the new REPLACEMENT Monday tariffs was his old argument AGAINST overturning the old Friday tariffs. But the key thing the Court actually did was give his cult a mortal shock. It is the first official body to give the Trump-Town Guyana Death Cult the message: that he is making this crap up, as he goes ALONG. -- Plus: an actual good idea from Boris Johnson: to send peacekeepers to Ukraine – NOW. And I’M the guy who thinks the Hockey Gold Medal is a BAD THING. And no, the John Barron who called into C-SPAN wasn’t Trump – he was too coherent. B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mark Zuckerberg manages to lose a lawsuit before the trial starts, Kid Rock proves he's not charging $5000 for front row tickets by confessing he IS charging $5000 for front row tickets, and Stephen Miller's wife has another one of those Freudian slips that may be desperate pleas for help from inside a bad situation. C-Block (50:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Baseball has already started so time for my annual explanation: why I don't work for baseball's TV network even though they offered me my own show and I accepted it. It has to do with a big league club threatening them if they didn't renege.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sebastian explains what klang.io's tools are designed to do — and just as importantly, what they are not. We talk about why AI-based transcription has reached a point of practical usefulness now, where the hardest musical problems still lie, and how klang.io thinks about accuracy as something musicians can trust and build on, rather than a promise of perfection. An A to Z of UK Television Drama

Andy and Martin travel back in time to the summer of 1965 and the adventures of HR consultant Drew Heriot and his sister-in-law Anne as they face up to the machinations of 'Undermind': aliens who have brainwashed British citizens in order to cause national unrest ahead of their imminent invasion. Their various schemes include: spreading pirate radio misinformation; inciting youth violence in a seaside resort; influencing the works of a popular children's author; the distribution of suicide-inducing birthday records; interference with the printing of exam papers, and most abominably of all, the assassination of Eamonn Andrews! Yes, really. Starring Jeremy Wilkin (best known as Kellman in Revenge of the Cybermen) and Rosemary Nichols (Annabelle in ITC's Department S) Undermind is an, often overlooked, sci-fi oddity created and ‘evolved by' Robert Banks Stewart and written by many familiar Doctor Who writers including Bill Strutton, David Whitaker and Robert Holmes. Other regular cast members were John Barron and Denis Quilley, while big name guest stars included Michael Gough, Peter Barkworth, Barrie Ingham, Judy Parfitt, Derek Francis and Philip Latham. Although there is much to enjoy here, the series' convoluted and sometimes incoherent plots tend to undermine (geddit?) its overall feel. Join Andy and Martin as they attempt to review all 11 episodes in 2 hours! And find out which of them was brainwashed into drawing Mulligatawny (a one-eyed turd with claws) while making their notes. The conference began with the second annual Tech Fair, a gathering of librarians, product specialists, and vendors, with demonstrations and exhibits bookended by panel discussions about technology as it relates to the performance librarian. The remainder of the four-day long conference featured plenary sessions, breakout groups, and lots of excellent spontaneous sharing of knowledge and experience about a crucial role in the music-making process. Philip Rothman and David MacDonald recap the conference with a podcast episode recorded in person from Cleveland, with a summary of the tech fair and the rest of the event: from the intricacies of percussion setup to licensing, copyright, and commissioning agreements, and much more. And, if you like your podcasts in video format, we have a special treat for you: A video of this podcast episode, recorded live. Join the riveting conversation with me, Jack Hopkins, and my esteemed guest, investigative journalist Jonathan Greenberg. Greenberg, a Yale Law School alumnus and former Forbes 400 reporter, uncovers the audacious financial fabrications of Donald Trump, or his alter ego, John Barron. Our dialogue reveals the enigmatic loyalty Trump maintains within the GOP, as we dissect the reasons behind the party's unyielding support and highlight the fear tactics used against its members. With each shocking revelation, understand the deep-rooted implications of Trump's manipulation of his public image and financial status, as we scrutinize the mechanisms of power that keep him afloat. As we question the Department of Justice under Merrick Garland, Greenberg brings his expertise in investigative journalism to bear on the DOJ's approach to the January 6th investigation. He critique's Garland's strategy, pondering if his bottom-up case building is the most effective way to confront the threats to American democracy. Reflecting on legal scholars like Laurence Tribe, we delve into the intricacies of Garland's cautious progression, contrasting it with the urgent need for a robust and aggressive defense of democratic principles. In our final exchange, we embark on a strategic discussion to transform the political narrative through media campaigns in swing states. By confronting voters with innovative and thought-provoking messages, Jonathan  aims to provoke powerful self-reflection on one's values and actions. Through the lens of  "Dems Vote Haley" campaign and the potential resonance of the hashtag #hatriot,  Jonathan explores tactics to engage and sway non-mainstream media consumers, combat voter complacency, and challenge the disbelievers of our democratic processes. Don't miss this episode for a deep exploration of the power, fear, and pivotal moments shaping democracy's future.Support the show

EPISODE 251: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: The same-day reporting on what was in Jack Smith's 2nd Target Letter to Trump was incomplete (possibly because Trump was the direct or indirect source and he only skimmed the letter and saw only the Statute Heading not the statute itself). If the Letter is any guide, The Special Counsel's centerpiece to the January 6th prosecution of Donald Trump is US Code 18 Section 241 - originally a Reconstruction-era law designed to prosecute Ku Klux Klan members for terrorizing freed slaves and keeping them from voting. It later morphed into the preferred tool for voting fraud and was affirmed in a Supreme Court ruling written by Thurgood Marshall in 1974, per The New York Times. It would fit all the "Fake Electors" schemes, but it would match what Trump tried to do ("I just want to find 11,780 votes") perfectly. It is the denial of the most fundamental constitutional right. Bottom line: Smith wants to prosecute Trump for trying to have a RIGGED THE ELECTION. For ELECTION INTERFERENCE. For FIXING THE VOTE. It would be an irony that would ring through the ages. I'll assess its meaning and how and why we missed it (John Barron? John Miller?) on Tuesday night, plus Trump's disastrous legal day. PLUS: Trump may not have had the WORST day. Ask Marjorie Groomer Greene, who spent the day showing America her porn collection: giant blown-up photos of Hunter Biden having sex. It was so bad, and the Republicans so beclowned themselves, that Congressman Jared Moskowitz quipped "Maybe now we need to call HUNTER Biden 'The Big Guy.'" B-BLOCK (21:43) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Stanford's student-run campus newspaper wins all the awards: its investigation of the University president's academic research work just led to him quitting. This flashed me back to how MY university president's academic qualifications (Dean of Engineering; co-discoverer of Element Number 85) saved the two of us from getting on a damaged Allegheny Airlines plane they were trying to repair with paper towels (29:12) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: If they're gonna make up Biden Million-Dollar Bribes, go big. And who better to believe anything than Maria Bartiromo. There's also the Maryland Congressional candidate who didn't know he was one, and the self-martyring saga of Twitter clown Catturd. C-BLOCK (35:20) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: The sad tale of Fizz in the NYC pound (36:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My producer had to explain to me that no, Rachel Maddow wasn't going to be on our MSNBC primary night coverage because my boss actually had LIED when he said he'd signed her to a contract, and we were about to lose her to CNN because Larry King offered her $250 to work there that night. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her personal struggle with the unknown has carried her through the twists, turns and glimpses of mysterious realities. Until now she has concealed her knowledge because certain powers threatened to stand in her way. The power of disinformation and ridicule runs deep in its mission to enforce pervasive ignorance and limit access to secret knowledge. Not only has she explored her own paranormal experiences, but she also talked to thousands of UFO contact experiencers, worked on three major studies with them, and became an advocate for these greatly ridiculed people. Her journey took her deep into archival research and experimentation. She gained access to files that reveal remarkable evidence of the governments' secret interest in communicating with our non-human visitors. Most fascinating, she and a team of researchers carried out a multi-year communication experiment in search of answers to their many questions on why extraterrestrials are visiting our planet, how long they have been here, and why they have been coveting Forbidden Knowledge. You'll find the answers inside this fascinating book.BioKathleen Marden is a researcher, author, on camera expert, conference presenter, experiencer advocate, hypnosis practitioner and support group facilitator. She is known as one of the leading UFO contact researchers of our time. Since 1990, she has researched the perplexing nature of UFOs and the non-human entities associated with highly advanced aerial vehicles via her own groundbreaking research, investigation, and experimentation. Her research has extended to archival collections and the US government's involvement in the investigation of UFOs and its major studies. This has combined to give her a depth of knowledge that few possess. She is the 2013 recipient of MUFON's "Researcher of the Year" award and the 2021 recipient of the International UFO Congress "Lifetime Achievement Award".She earned a B.A. degree in social work and was employed as an educator and education services coordinator while attending graduate school. She is a certified practitioner of regression hypnosis and the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique. She has worked on three social research studies, on experiencers of ET contact, two with Ph.D. social scientists. Additionally, she offers the Awakening Souls support group for experiencers who feel an intense calling to be part of the answer and to assist others who are beginning to awaken to their relationship with Non-human intelligence. Her interest in UFOs and contact began in 1961, when her aunt and uncle, Betty and Barney Hill had a close encounter and subsequent abduction in New Hampshire's White Mountains. She spent fifteen years in painstaking investigation of the Hill abduction case and continues to seek the scientific analysis of the compelling evidence. Her bestseller with nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman (1934-2019) is “Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience”. She and Stanton worked together for nearly 14 years and collaborated on two additional books “Science Was Wrong” and “Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers”. Her book with Denise Stoner “The Alien Abduction Files” includes her investigation of six intergenerational cases of abduction/contact. Her fifth book “Extra Terrestrial Contact: What to Do When You've Been Abducted” is a comprehensive guide to contact for Experiencers, those who love them, professionals who work with Experiencers, and the interested public. Read her latest book “Forbidden Knowledge: A Personal Journey from Alien Abduction to Spiritual Transformation” for deeper insight into Kathleen's own life and works. *Note: The audio quality of the earliest episodes (like this one) is not the best. Sorry. Don't worry, the quality gets better in the episodes ahead as I learn the new skillset required. Audio of the unanimous opinion of the Supreme Court in Barron v. Baltimore (1833). In a lawsuit attempting to recover financial loss, Baltimore wharf owner John Barron alleged that construction initiated by the city beginning in 1815 redirected water flow and caused so much sand to accumulate that it eventually deprived the harbor of the deep waters necessary for larger ships to use the wharf, resulting in a significant loss of profits for Mr. Barron. He sued the city to try to recover some of his financial losses. The trial court awarded him $4,500 in damages, which the Maryland appellate court struck down. The question before the Court in this case was whether the Fifth Amendment denies the states as well as the national government the right to take private property for public use without justly compensating the property owner (a.k.a. the taking clause). I omit citations when reading SCOTUS opinions to provide a better listening experience. You may access the opinion here: https://www.oyez.org/cases/1789-1850/32us243   Music by Epidemic Sound

Small business owners spend so much money on marketing their businesses, but the most powerful way to grow a business is through referrals. John Barron has a powerful plan to help you develop referrals which is why I have invited him back onto the Solopreneur Money podcast.  If you listened to episode 50 you heard John talk about the sales continuum and you learned how to implement an effective process that turns leads into paying clients. Today John is here to teach you how to grow your business through the referral engine. The referral engine is an ingenious plan that utilizes the way we naturally refer people to businesses.  You know the best clients come from referrals, so make sure to press play to hear how to increase your customer base by creating a referral system.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... When to ask for a referral [2:32] 3 reasons someone wouldn't refer people to you [5:28] Referral engine success stories [13:39]  The money questions [17:01]  When should you ask for a referral? Business owners often wonder when the best time to ask a customer for a referral is. The answer is never. You might be shaking your head in surprise. Never? Well then, how are you supposed to get new clients? Just because you shouldn't directly ask for referrals doesn't mean you shouldn't go out of your way to encourage people to recommend your business; it means you should understand the referral relationship. Why we shouldn't ask clients for referrals If asking clients for a referral feels weird and uncomfortable that's because it is weird and uncomfortable! And it's weird and uncomfortable because of the nature of referrals. You don't want to put yourself or someone else through the awkwardness of directly asking for a referral. That doesn't mean that people don't enjoy referring their friends and family members to fabulous companies; everyone loves to recommend a fantastic company to a friend. However, it is important to understand that people don't recommend businesses to their friends to help the business; they do it to help their friends. To understand how the referral engine works it is important to understand why someone wouldn't refer potential clients to a business. 3 reasons someone wouldn't refer potential clients to your business People often don't recognize an opportunity for you. They don't know your target market. People don't know how to talk about you; they may not know why you are so great at what you do. They don't know all the services that you provide. There is a risk that comes with referring someone to a business. The referrer puts their reputation on the line.  How to get these obstacles out of the way The first two obstacles to overcome are educational. You can overcome these by simply educating your network about what you do and who you serve. One way to do that is by writing a letter--not an email, a physical letter. Listen in to hear what you should include in this letter. You'll be blown away by how simple this plan is. It is easy to implement and effective.  Every person you meet is either a potential client or a potential referral. Learn how to utilize your network to get your referral engine started.  Resources & People Mentioned Episode 50 - Sales Continuum Connect with John Barron Apollo Coaching John Barron on LinkedIn Email: apollocc.jpb@gmail.com Connect With Gabe Nelson www.GabeNelsonFinancial.com/contact FREE Downloadable Resources at https://www.gabenelsonfinancial.com/resources/ EMAIL: Gabe (at) GabeNelsonFinancial.com Follow Gabe on LinkedIn Follow Gabe on Twitter: @GabeNelsonCFP Follow Gabe on Facebook Follow Gabe on Instagram: @GabeNelsonCFP Subscribe to Solopreneur Money Audio Production and Show notes by PODCAST FAST TRACK https://www.podcastfasttrack.com

Are you looking to improve your marketing and sales techniques so that you can bring in more clients? To do that, you need to have an effective process that you can follow to bring a person from being a lead to a paying client. If you are looking to improve your sales game, then you've got to hear this interview with John Barron.  This episode is actually the first of a 2-part interview with John. In this episode, we're discussing the sales continuum and next week we'll learn about the referral engine. By the time you are finished with both episodes, you will understand a process that you can follow to improve your marketing and ultimately turn prospects into paying customers.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... How John went from being an attorney to becoming a coach [4:22] Key characteristics of entrepreneurs [8:21] Creating your own sales continuum [11:20] How to develop an effective sales process [18:15]  Helping your prospects to be better consumers [28:22] Sharing your unique offer [32:43]  John Barron went from lawyer to banker to coach John Barron founded Apollo Coaching back in 2010 after trying his hat at various careers. He was able to start his coaching business simply by reaching out to his network of friends and family. Through his network of referrals, he eventually built up a constant flow of business.  John works with groups and individuals by using his effective methodology in a hands-on way to produce the results his clients desire.  Visualize your sales continuum Think about the people that you are looking to connect with in your business. What makes someone change from a prospective client to an actual client? Many people think that leads jump from one stage to the next but there is more of a continuum to this sales process.  A prospect can be defined as someone who is aware and interested in your product or service. A lead is someone who is willing to engage with you and your company. Someone who is committed is ready to purchase what you are selling.  People don't just jump from prospect to client all of a sudden they follow a sequence based on their interactions with you. To move potential customers through these stages you have to have an effective process in place to help move them along.  Design a pitch-free process The whole point of prospecting is to get someone from your target audience to become aware and interested in your product. Once you do that, then you can move them through your sales process. To get them ready for your process you'll want to use compelling language that also makes them feel safe. Listen in to learn 3 must-dos to help you design a pitch-free process so that your potential clients feel safe to engage with you.  If you got value from this interview with John Barron, make sure to come back next week to hear John describe his referral engine. Key Links John Barron's LinkedIn profile --------------------------------------- In this episode, John Barron shares the importance of replacing old systems with new ones. Most business owners take a plateau personally or as a sign of having mismanaged their business, but Barron says this is not true. The culprit is often that there are systems in place that are not consistent—somewhere along the way, X stopped being X and became Y instead, even though what was really needed all along was Z. Or as Barron says, “a Toyota factory can't produce a giraffe.” Perspectives are just as important as systems because if you are an entrepreneur who has been “down in the weeds,” and you are suffering from tunnel vision because of it, often you need an outside agent to provide a more balanced viewpoint; a coach can help one obtain this crucial vantage point. Procrastination can also be just as powerful a tool as well. As Matthew, the host of the podcast shares in this episode, he works more efficiently when a deadline looms near. Putting things off to the last minute actually helps him get work done at a faster rate.

Starting off in the Bistro Cafe, Julian Castro explains why a furious Trump insists Bannon is a Nobody; then, on the rest of the menu, we'll investigate why the Trump administration seeks to make student loan debt forgiveness harder for the defrauded; a Turkish banker was convicted by a jury in a U.S. Federal Court in connection with a massive scheme to help Iran evade US sanctions; and, a former U.S. National Security Agency contractor has agreed to plead guilty to stealing classified information, in what may have been the largest heist of U.S. government secrets in history. After the break, we move to the Chef's Table for an inquiry in how the person anonymously leaking racist attacks on the Mueller grand jury sure sounds a lot like John Barron; and, Morning Joe has some thoughts on what Trump thinks of Sally Yates. All that and more, on West Coast Cookbook & Speakeasy with Chef de Cuisine, Justice Putnam.Bon Appetit!

William Davenport Mercer‘s Diminishing the Bill of Rights: Barron v. Baltimore and the Foundations of American Liberty (University of Oklahoma Press, 2017) argues that if we want to understand how Americans in the early Republic viewed the sources of their rights, we need look no further than the mud at the bottom of Baltimore harbor. In the early nineteenth century, two men, John Barron, Jr. and John Craig, decided to buy a Baltimore wharf on credit. They were hoping to capitalize on rapidly-expanding commercial growth in city in the wake of the War of 1812. Instead, the city diverted water into the harbor, leaving Barron and Craig's wharf silted up and the pair with a pile of debt. The men sued, and eventually their case was argued before the Supreme Court. The decision in Barron v. Baltimore, as William Davenport Mercer shows, marked a key development in the history of American constitutionalism. In arguing that the Bill of Rights (and thus, the Fifth Amendment) applied only at the Federal level, the court rejected a multi-sourced view of liberties. The contentious politics of the era, Dr. Mercer argues, precipitated our modern turn toward locating the sources of rights exclusively in documents. Reporters at The Washington Post noted that Donald Trump has a history of calling reporters under the guise of phantom spokespersons named John Barron and John Miller. He uses the guise to share the wonderful things he's been up to, or depending on how you look at it, to spin his bad press into something more golden, especially his relationships with women he believes are attracted to him. John Barron is a full-time blacksmith in Georgetown, CA.  He began working with metal in a large fabrication shop in Oakland, California in 1975 and learned. Today, he specializes in architectural ironwork and will be one of the demonstrators at the ABANA 2016 Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. What We Talked About John learned his trade from an Italian trained smith in a union iron-working shop in Oakland, California during the 1970's and 80's. He joined the Shopmen Ironworkers Union and worked in a large fabrication shop. One of the main skills he learned was how to design, build and install stair railings. In 1989 John left the Ironworks Union after being vested with them for 10 years. He moved to the Sierra Mountains and began working for Auburn Ironworks, the oldest running blacksmith shop in northern California. A few years after hiring John, the company downsized and let him go. This pushed John to start his own blacksmithing business. After five years of running the business he took a hard look at his expenses and income and found out that he was making about $7/hour, which wasn’t sustainable. So he shut the business down and went to work for other fabricators. Eventually he moved to Georgetown and stated another blacksmith business. In between metal jobs John does shoe repair for additional income. John will be demonstrating how to design, measure, layout and install a stair railing. 46 feet of railing will be the goal to be finished and installed on-site for a handicap ramp. The railing will be a collaborative project and John is asking for participants to help make the railing and also make 18 rings for the railing. The rings are to be made from 1” x ¼” flat bar, bent into a 7” circle the easy way and forge welded.  Your design can go on the inside of the ring, but will need to allow space on the sides for collaring and on the top for a rivet.  More details here: http://www.piehtoolco.com/abana/2016%20ABANA%20RAILING-Layout1.pdf If you plan on making a ring, please let John know by email, john@barroncreations.com . John is hoping to have six forging stations for participants to work in pairs assisting in making the railing components. The ideal participant will have level 2 blacksmith skills.   Guest Links John’s Website: http://www.barroncreations.com/ His page on the ABANA Conference website: http://www.abana.org/Conferences/2016/contents/en-us/d10_John_Baron_SP_.html A Big Thank You to today’s sponsor – ABANA 2016 Salt Lake Conference Maybe more pictures If you enjoyed this episode, I would love it if you would support the show by: telling your friends. sharing this episode using the social sharing buttons below. subscribing to the show and leaving a rating and review in iTunes.  Not sure how?  Just follow these simple steps here or watch the short video tutorial, http://youtu.be/rq4OCyRGjHc?list=UUH3MfNZLXlKgionAs6kMT_Q subscribing to the show in Stitcher, http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=54499&refid=stpr Thanks so much for your support!

Is it a cause for concern that 'worthy' news might attract small audiences or has it always been that way? Is our usage of the internet as a platform for news degrading or enhancing the quality of our public conversations? Many consumers of news are overloaded with information, but do they know less than ever about current events? Join Time correspondent Jay Newton-Small, opinion editor at US News & Word Report Robert Schlesinger, director of news at the ABC Kate Torney, and ABC host and journalist John Barron for this conversation titled ‘news as serious business’.

Contrary to what we hear shouted from both sides of the pro-choice/pro-life divide, abortion actually is a complicated issue. Is it possible to make progress on an issue that seems to straddle the line of our deepest philosophical differences? If it is, it certainly won't be done with pictures of dead fetus' or insisting that a women's right to choose is the only morally relevant factor to consider. This RD extra is a debate between Justin Schieber and John Barron on the issue of abortion. John keeps a blog at Siftingreality.com. There John blogs about Christianity, atheism, gay marriage and, of course, abortion.
