Send us a text"What if homeschooling didn't have to look like anyone else's version but your own?" This question frames our enlightening conversation with Linsey Knerl, veteran homeschooling mother of six and author of "Homeschool Hacks." With children ranging from 11 to 26 years old, Linsey shares how her family's "one year at a time" approach evolved into a two-decade educational journey that prioritizes flexibility, observation, and meeting each child where they are.Linsey reveals her pragmatic "education curation" philosophy—connecting children with passionate subject experts through online courses, co-ops, and carefully selected curricula rather than attempting to personally teach every subject. This approach fosters independence while developing research skills children will need throughout life. "I'm not providing all the information," she explains. "My job is equipping them to find that information themselves."The discussion explores how technology has transformed homeschooling, making learning more accessible for diverse learning styles. Linsey shares candid insights about supporting her son with dyslexia, finding the unexpected combination of audiobooks with physical text tracking worked best for him—not because it followed expert recommendations, but because they observed and listened to what actually helped him learn effectively. This theme of careful observation runs throughout our conversation, challenging parents to truly know their children rather than following prescriptive educational methods.Whether you're considering homeschooling, already deep in the journey, or simply curious about educational alternatives, Linsey's practical wisdom offers a refreshing counterbalance to perfectionism. "Take the time to get to know your child," she advises. "Let them be more of the compass than the group of families on Facebook who have this specific curriculum they love." Podcast descriptionIn this week's episode clinical psychologist Patrick Lockwood joins Elizabeth for a discussion about why, despite all evidence to the contrary, beliefs in learning styles remain strong.  We talk about the psychological and institutional forces that promote the myth including the countless journal articles, opinion pieces and websites that make fuzzy suggestions about neuroscience and other vague claims few individual learners and teachers are capable of evaluating for accuracy.  Our desires for uniqueness, to blame forces outside our control when we perform at or below average, confirmation biases, and the ubiquitousness of the myth are just a few of the reasons we can perhaps forgive individuals for succumbing to the learning style grift.  More egregious is that institutions continue to cling to them.  Learning styles are actively taught to future teachers in schools of education, to students of all ages in K-12 classrooms, in tutoring centers, and of course, touted in online forums.  Patrick and Elizabeth share literature that debunks learning styles and  take the listener on a brief tour of learning habits and strategies that are supported by research.Podcast notesBrown SBRE (2023) The persistence of matching teaching and learning styles: A review of the ubiquity of this neuromyth, predictors of its endorsement, and recommendations to end it. She emphasizes the importance of engaging learners through experience, reflection, and action, and explores the experiential learning cycle and various learning styles. The discussion also highlights the significance of reflection in the learning process and how it can be made more engaging. Romy shares practical strategies for facilitators to enhance their teaching methods and the need to bridge theory and practice in education.   Experiential learning is about learning through experience, reflection, thinking, and acting. Reflection is essential for deep learning and should be varied to keep it engaging. Learning styles are preferences that can change over time and should not box learners in. The experiential learning cycle can be applied to all aspects of life, not just formal education. Peer learning is often more impactful than facilitator-led instruction. Creating a safe space for reflection can lead to powerful insights and learning outcomes. Facilitators should strive to engage all learning styles in their teaching methods. The journey of learning is continuous and can spiral into deeper understanding and action. 229 - How We Learn Matters More Than What We Learn Learning is more than taking in information—it's about transformation. The way learning is approached often determines how deeply it takes root and impacts daily life. This episode explores why being intentional about the learning process makes all the difference. From methods like teaching, project-based work, and reflecting through struggle, to considering how technology like AI fits into the process, this discussion offers a roadmap to learning that leads to growth, resilience, and even joy. Passive vs. Active Learning:Absorbing content without focus—reading while distracted or listening without engagement—leads to shallow understanding. In contrast, active learning, where there's intention, reflection, and application, creates change. Engaging deeply with a subject by asking questions, taking notes, or testing understanding results in better retention and real-life utility. Teaching to Reinforce Knowledge:One of the most effective ways to learn is to teach. When explaining a concept to others, it becomes necessary to understand it fully. Teaching sharpens thinking, exposes gaps in knowledge, and forces organization of ideas. The process of preparing to teach something naturally deepens personal mastery. Learning Through Projects:Doing something hands-on turns theory into practice. Projects—whether automating a smart home system, organizing with software, or crafting a creative piece—reveal the nuances of a skill. Starting with small, achievable tasks and expanding from there helps build confidence while naturally progressing into more complex areas. The Role of Struggle in Learning:Discomfort is not a sign of failure—it's the place where growth happens. When a concept feels difficult or frustrating, it's often the moment just before a breakthrough. Seeking out challenges, revisiting hard material, and wrestling with ideas help integrate knowledge on a deeper level. Struggle builds both competence and character. Learning Styles and Personalization:Recognizing how information is best absorbed—visually, audibly, or kinesthetically—can change the learning experience entirely. Tailoring materials and methods to fit natural preferences makes learning smoother and more sustainable. It's not about finding the "right" tool, but the one that fits how the brain works best. Using AI to Enhance, Not Replace, Learning:AI can be a powerful tool for structuring learning paths, brainstorming ideas, and breaking down complex topics. It accelerates access to resources and helps clarify confusion. But it should serve as a guide, not a replacement for real thought. Over-reliance on AI can prevent the necessary struggle and reflection that makes learning stick. Unexpected Passions and Practical Payoffs:Sometimes, what begins as an obligation or neutral task becomes a passion. Exploring new skills can lead to unexpected joy, relationships, or career changes. Other times, learning something unpleasant helps avoid frustration later. Either way, engaging fully with a subject—even without passion—can lead to worthwhile outcomes. Takeaways:The quality of learning depends more on approach than on the content itself. Passive consumption won't create growth; active engagement will. Teaching others, doing real projects, embracing struggle, and understanding personal learning styles are all ways to turn ordinary learning into something life-changing. AI and other tools can support the journey but can't substitute the internal work required to truly learn. Even when something doesn't seem enjoyable at first, there's value in trying it anyway. Passion can grow unexpectedly, and sometimes the reward is not in the task itself, but in the freedom or skill it unlocks. Learning is not about information—it's about identity. Becoming a better learner builds confidence for tackling anything, from career changes to hobbies to everyday challenges. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/4090-2/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJillday https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallsteps (link corrected) https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/schmern Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

For a while now we've been planning on having a conversation that advocates for compassion and understanding in what it must be like for neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with ADHD diagnosis, navigating a neurotypical world. We also thought it might be helpful to understand how ADHD might impact both trainers and people who might be attending classes or 121's. What unfolded was a fascinating conversation that enabled us to delve into the complexities of ADHD, discussing its impact on communication and relationships, emphasizing the importance of understanding and supporting one another within our relationships and communities. We get to explore the intricate relationship between dog training and ADHD, delve into the parallels in understanding behaviour, the importance of environment and the need for emotional acceptance. We find out how dog body language can inform our understanding of ADHD, the impact of genetics versus environment, and the challenges faced by individuals with ADHD in various settings. Alex effortlessly and expertly addresses misconceptions about ADHD and the societal perceptions that contribute to a stigmas. We hear how things people might take for granted, like the setting of boundaries and self-care, can be unique challenges faced by individuals with ADHD. We explore how personal experiences shape their understanding of self-worth and the importance of community support. Of course, we touch on the complexities of dog training, the nuances of behaviour, and the importance of understanding both dogs and humans and the significance of empathy in fostering connections. On top of all that top notch audio goodness Nat and Steve talk about Alex's book, discuss the challenges of understanding neurodiversity, discuss the arrival of spring and the emotional connection they feel towards nature (particularly a sparrow named Dave). The conversation covers various topics including the significance of routines, recognizing individual learning styles, and the benefits of chores in fostering independence and reducing anxiety in children. What We're Talking About An organized child is not just about tidiness but a way of thinking. Parents must model organizational skills to teach their children effectively. It's never too late to start teaching organization, but earlier is better. Children thrive on structure and routine from infancy. Recognizing individual learning styles is crucial for effective teaching. Encouraging independence helps children learn to solve their own problems. Chores contribute to children's confidence and reduce anxiety. Gradual independence in tasks prepares children for adulthood. Electronics use should be balanced with responsibilities. The Coaching Crowd Podcast with Jo Wheatley & Zoe Hawkins

How can visualisation unlock deeper insights for your coaching clients? In this episode, we explore the powerful role that visualisation plays in coaching. Whether it's a grounding exercise at the start of a session, a guided journey to explore emotions, or a visioning tool for goal achievement, visualisation is a technique that can transform client experiences. We share how visualisation works, why it engages the subconscious mind, and how coaches can introduce it confidently. Many clients find visualisation helps them access different perspectives and unlock creative thinking. However, as coaches, it's important to introduce it in a way that aligns with the client's needs and learning style. We also discuss practical considerations, such as whether to turn off cameras during virtual sessions, how to adjust visualisation for different clients, and why your confidence in delivering it matters just as much as the script itself. By the end of this episode, you'll have the tools and inspiration to incorporate visualisation into your coaching practice in a way that feels natural, ethical, and impactful.   Step-by-Step Guide: How to Use Visualisation in Coaching Set the Context for the Visualisation o   Explain to the client how visualisation works and its purpose in coaching. o   Ensure they feel comfortable with the technique and give them the option to opt out. Choose the Right Type of Visualisation o   Short grounding exercises (e.g., breathing and body awareness) help clients settle into a session. o   Longer guided visualisations can be used to explore emotions, values, or future goals. o   Spontaneous visualisation can be woven into conversations (e.g., "Close your eyes and picture yourself stepping into this scenario. What do you notice?"). Create a Safe and Comfortable Space o   Ask the client to find a comfortable position (seated or lying down). o   If virtual, discuss turning off cameras to help the client relax. o   Ensure they are in a warm, distraction-free environment. Guide the Visualisation with Confidence o   Use a calm and steady tone, adjusting pace and intonation for effect. o   Focus on sensory details—sight, sound, touch, smell—to deepen the experience. o   Allow pauses for reflection, giving the client time to absorb the journey. Invite Reflection and Integration o   Gently bring the client back to the present and allow space for reflection. o   Ask questions like "What insights did you gain?" or "How did that experience feel?" o   Encourage them to take notes or journal if helpful. Adapt Visualisation to the Client's Learning Style o   Visual thinkers may love detailed imagery, while non-visual learners may prefer body-based awareness exercises. o   Offer alternative ways to engage (e.g., audio-based imagery or metaphor-based questions). Debrief and Apply the Learning o   Help the client translate insights into actionable steps. o   Ask, "How can you use this experience to move towards your goal?" o   Acknowledge if the visualisation wasn't impactful—learning from that experience is still valuable.   Key Lessons Learned Visualisation is a flexible tool – It can be a short grounding exercise or a deep guided journey. Confidence in delivery matters – The way you introduce it influences how the client engages. Not all clients are visual learners – Be adaptable and offer different sensory-based approaches. Creating the right setting is crucial – Comfort, warmth, and a sense of safety enhance effectiveness. Visualisation can reveal subconscious insights – It helps clients access deeper wisdom beyond logical thinking. It's an invitation, not a requirement – Clients should always feel free to stop at any point. Practice helps coaches refine their skills – The more you use visualisation, the more natural it becomes.   Key Takeaways Introduce visualisation with confidence—your belief in the process helps the client engage. Use sensory details—sight, sound, touch, and emotions—to deepen the experience. Create a safe and comfortable environment—clients should feel relaxed and free from distractions. Always debrief afterwards—help clients extract meaning and practical steps from their experience. Experiment and refine your approach—each client will respond differently, so stay flexible.   Timestamps 00:13 – 00:46: Introduction—why visualisation is a powerful coaching tool 00:47 – 02:07: What is visualisation, and how does it work in coaching? 02:34 – 03:55: The subconscious mind and its role in coaching visualisations 04:21 – 05:44: Different types of visualisation and when to use them 06:13 – 07:39: Practical considerations—client comfort, camera on/off, and setting the scene 08:09 – 09:34: The coach's role—why confidence in delivery matters 10:03 – 11:46: How visualisation can help clients access deeper wisdom 12:16 – 13:59: Using visualisation in leadership and career coaching 14:39 – 15:59: How to create your own guided visualisations 16:27 – 17:55: Ethical considerations—ensuring clients feel safe and in control 18:50 – 19:49: Final reflections—how to start integrating visualisation into your practice   Keywords; How to use visualisation in coaching, Guided visualisation techniques for coaches, Coaching and the subconscious mind, Visualisation exercises for goal setting, How to create guided imagery in coaching, Coaching confidence in visualisation, Sensory coaching techniques, Using visualisation in business coaching, Ethical considerations in guided visualisation, How to help clients access deeper insights   Links: Coaching Business Lounge (Pricing Strategy Resources): www.igcompany.co.uk/businesslounge Take the Coaching Course Quiz: www.mycoachingcourse.com Emotions Coaching Practitioner Training: www.igcompany.co.uk/emotionscoaching COACHING TRAINING LEVEL 5 https://www.igcompany.co.uk/l5-diploma COACHING TRAINING LEVEL 7 https://www.igcompany.co.uk/l7-diploma   Purchase our bestselling book ”Deciding to Coach”: https://amzn.to/3UvUe9r Neurodivergent inclusive coaching programme: http://www.igcompany.co.uk/nd Resources: Take our FREE Quiz 'Which Coaching Course is Right for Me?' https://www.mycoachingcourse.com/ Join The Coaching Crowd Community on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheCoachingCrowd/ In Good Company (UK) https://www.igcompany.co.uk/ Check out our YouTube Channel https://bit.ly/378rY9a Check out our Instagram https://www.Instagram.com/the_coaching_crowd Work with Jo Wheatley as your Emotions Coach https://www.jowheatley.com Connect with Jo Wheatley on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jo_wheatley_coaching/  Connect with Jo Wheatley on LinkedIn https://uk.linkedin.com/in/joannewheatley Work with Zoe Hawkins as your Courageous Leadership Coach https://www.zoe-hawkins.com  Connect with Zoe Hawkins on Facebook https://facebook.com/zoehawkinscoach/ Connect with Zoe Hawkins on LinkedIn https://uk.linkedin.com/in/zoehawkinscoach Connect with Zoe Hawkins on Instagram www.instagram.com/zoehawkinscoach

Kim Almas joins us to share her inspiring journey from a traditional classroom teacher to a passionate homeschooling advocate. Her early love for education, nurtured since preschool, led her from exploring business in college to embracing a fulfilling teaching career in a Christian school. Eventually, the birth of her children sparked her transition into homeschooling, where she played a vital role in establishing one of California's pioneering charter schools for homeschooling. Kim's story underscores the significant paradigm shift required for educators stepping into homeschool settings, as she candidly discusses the challenges and rewards of adapting teaching philosophies to suit diverse learners. Kim's insights into homeschooling philosophies and challenges offer a refreshing perspective on education. Initially attempting to mimic a traditional classroom at home, she soon realized the need for a more flexible, child-centered approach. Encouraged by fellow homeschooling moms and influential readings like "Better Late Than Early," she embraced a renewed sense of purpose, adapting her teaching to align with her children's unique learning styles and interests. This journey highlights the importance of adaptability, community support, and focusing on children's passions, with anecdotes of students pursuing unique paths such as Japanese studies, underscoring the real-world benefits of personalized education. Throughout our conversation, Kim emphasizes the crucial balance between academic responsibilities and fostering a strong social environment for students, especially in homeschooling. She reflects on her experiences as a licensed evaluator, comparing standardized testing with personalized evaluations, and celebrates the creativity and individuality of homeschooled students. The episode concludes with valuable advice on building successful homeschooling relationships, advocating for homeschooling as a lifestyle that prioritizes faith, family, and fostering a genuine love for learning. Kim's dedication and practical insights provide invaluable guidance for anyone exploring the homeschooling journey. And how should we apply these ideas as learning professionals?  This week on The Mind Tools L&D Podcast, Ross Garner and Ross Dickie are joined by Jane Bozarth, Director of Research for the Learning Guild, to discuss three research papers that challenge the received wisdom. We cover:  Generational difference Learning styles  The “Marshmallow Test”.  The three papers we discussed were: 'Generational Differences in Work-Related Attitudes: A Meta-analysis', published in 2012 in the Journal of Business and Psychology.  'Another Nail in the Coffin for Learning Styles?
