#103: Healthcare Software Startup Sold to VC-Funded Competitor During COVID Era – Ian Manners

Practical Founders Podcast

Ian Manners was a successful consultant for pharmaceutical companies in the US when he discovered a major problem that needed a software solution. Big pharma companies provide financial assistance funding for patients who require their drugs but struggle with high costs, but these funds are difficult to access and manage for patients and healthcare providers.  Ian and his cofounder created Vivor in 2014 to connect this financial assistance funding to patients through healthcare providers like hospitals, medical offices, and healthcare networks. The bootstrapped software startup grew slowly at first but eventually became profitable as it scaled up. Since inception, Vivor has helped over 100,000 patients receive over $2 billion in financial assistance to offset the high costs of prescriptions.  During the COVID crisis that hit the US healthcare industry, Ian decided to merge Vivor with TailorMed, a VC-funded competitor, in a cash and stock deal. He stayed on for two years during the transition and is now looking for his next entrepreneurial adventure in healthcare software.  Quote from Ian Manners, cofounder and former CEO of Vivor “The overall idea of merging our companies and having stock and some cash in our acquisition structure made sense for both parties. If the company that's acquiring your company is huge and they've got big cash reserves, they buy someone out. But if you're combining with another startup, that cash is precious. They don't want to spend all of it.  “So it really makes sense to do a combination of the two and to include equity in the deal. I think that part was absolutely a win-win, even when, as you're going through that process, you negotiate all the details. “It's a huge bet for us to take equity as part of our deal, We became an investor in the company that bought us.. I think for anyone facing something similar, my advice would be to just slow down that part of it and really think about and digest the fact that you're becoming an investor in the combined company. “ Links Ian Manners on LinkedIn Vivor website TailorMed on LinkedIn TailorMed website The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. Subscribe to the Practical Founders Podcast using your favorite podcast app. Get the weekly Practical Founders newsletter and podcast updates at practicalfounders.com.

This is our very last regular news roundup of the year. We still have a lot planned for you, though, with special interviews, guest appearances, and predictions. But that's all to come. This time 'round we once again had Mary Ann Azevedo and Alex Wilhelm together to hammer through the key news from the week:Cruise layoffs: Breaking as we went to record, self-driving company Cruise is cutting a simply massive number of staff.Deals of the Week: Prevu's $6 million Series A and why proptech is Not Dead Yet, and why Verve Motion just raised $20 million for supportive lifting suits. What's up with France? With Mistral AI making waves, other French startups are also snagging our attention. This includes Pivot which just raised $21.6 million, and what's going on with startup studio Hexa. And then there's AI: We can't not talk about it, yeah? Sorry if you are a bit over AI, but while deals keep happening and founders keep building, it's going to be in the rundown. This time we're digging how a few mega-deals are changing the numbers, and also how AI might need to pay for itself. We are back Monday with some really fun stuff! This week Mary Ann Azevedo, Kirsten Korosec, and Alex Wilhelm gathered to hash out the news over some coffee and good times. Here's what the gang got into today:Deals of the Week: Simply Homes raises $22 million for an interesting property play, SoftBank buys majority share of connected-vehicles company Cubic Telecom, and OurSky raises $9.2 million for its space-viewing software system.Troubles in Fintech: With ZestMoney shutting down, and layoffs at Navan (fka TripAction) it seems that fintech is not out of the woods yet. That said, Alex has some notes on enthusiasm in one area of financial technology. What's up with software? Neil Koenig, ideaXme board advisor and former BBC Series Producer interviews Gyri Reiersen, Co-founder and CPO, Tanso. Neil comments: Despite countless warnings from scientists about the dangers that greenhouse gas emissions pose to our environment, it seems that many businesses have still to wake up to the gravity of the situation. “It always surprises me how little companies know about their emissions” says Gyri Reiersen. An activist, entrepreneur, and self-confessed “nerd”, she is also co-founder of Tanso, a start-up based in Munich that offers software to help industrial companies understand and manage their carbon footprint. Although Tanso was only recently founded, it has attracted support from a range of venture capital and angel investors, whilst its products are already being used by some large German industrial enterprises. I had the chance to interview Gyri at this year's Symposium, an annual event organised by the students at the university of St Gallen in Switzerland. In this interview for ideaXme, Gyri Reiersen talks about how the idea for her start-up came about, the challenges of helping enterprises to understand the role they need to play in tackling climate change, and her optimistic belief that, if we all work together, we can solve the difficult challenges that lie ahead. Gyri Reiersen Biography: Gyri is a climate activist, co-founder, and CPO of the ClimateTech startup Tanso. Driven by the urgency and importance of mitigating climate change, Tanso aims to remove the structural barriers that hinder corporations to decarbonize. They leverage the power of data and machine learning to help industrial manufacturing companies transition towards a lower carbon economy. Tanso are a product-driven company using state-of-the-art technology and scientific research to tackle climate change and making sustainability accounting as integrated, transparent, and verifiable as financial accounting. Passionate about leveraging tech and innovation to solve society's largest issues, she recently worked on research together with TUM, ETH Zurich, and MIT using machine learning to estimate carbon storage in reforestation projects through satellite and drone imagery. As an active member of the Global Shapers, an initiative for young leaders, and other organizations, she has launched multiple initiatives to empower founders to tackle climate change, increase diversity in tech, and break the stigma around mental health. Angular Ventures, System. Zum Portfolio gehören u.a. For Jen Crichlow, art and technology are inseparable. Her involvement at arts festivals of all stripes revealed the digital divide that affects everything from event management to the preservation of culture. So she enrolled in grad school to explore how tech inequity disproportionately affects underrepresented and marginalized arts communities and movements. Now as an executive at SAVVI AI, she's making machine learning accessible to companies and nonprofits that don't have legions of data scientists and software developers at their disposal. And Jen gets to work with artists every day as she and her SAVVI colleagues are building something that doesn't exist. While she might have debated that classification ten years ago, her answer today is unequivocal: “Yes, it's art. It's absolutely novel. It's creative.”Resources mentionedAsk a Manager The Nap Ministry Where to find Jen and SAVVI AIJen on LinkedInSAVVIAI.comSAVVI on LinkedIn and TwitterCheck out more from The Work SeminarVisit theworkseminar.com or find @TheWorkSeminar on social media. Sign up for The Work Seminar newsletter to receive updates straight to your inbox.Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/theworkseminar)

In this panel-style discussion hosted by Daden LLC, Gas Money co-founders Robert Walker and Austin Pariseau discuss their entrepreneurial journey, challenges, successes, and future roadmap for their newly released Gas Money App. Gas Money is a platform that enables clients to find and hire young adults in their area for the completion of home- and yard-based services. These services include jobs such as lawn mowing, landscaping, and car washing, to name a few, but our goal is to eventually accommodate any service that can be completed by a high school or college student. Unlike other gig-based platforms, Gas Money is fully student-led, and all contractors that offer services on the Gas Money App are 16-24 years old. Gas Money contractors can create their own schedules and communicate directly with clients through the app, and they also have the ability to collaborate with other contractors in their area. The Gas Money App is completely free to use, and it generates revenue on a commission-based model from completed jobs. Our mission is to provide young adults with the opportunity to become their own boss and develop real-world skills in communication, leadership, and accountability. Gas Money is more than just a service platform: we are the workforce of the future.
